I was on the roof of a Berlin club. A friend who I haven't spoken to in far too long from LA sent me a message that said 'Michael Jackson is dead!' Strange, the things that bring us together.

I will write this in english as in German i don't think I would be able to get my point accross - I have studied at German Universities and have first hand experience with the bureaucracy and the short recources, however, I see the biggest problem being the students themselves. The majority of the classes which I took were all based on students giving a 'Referat' My first reaction was 'fantastic, amazing, participatory learning, we are all in this together, lets explore new ideas and concepts together!' Unfortunately, the reality is that most students were at best apathetic and did very, very little research, thought or work. Every class felt like I was being cheated of an oppertunity to learn because my fellow students were simply lazy. Until I had one seminar where everyone involved actually cared about the material being taught, where the concepts brought forth in the material were challenged and at the end of the semester I think each student as well as the professor had learned a great deal. Even without amazing libraries and expensive beamers you can learn a lot, especially in light of new media. Access to information has NEVER been easier. My point is - the German system of Higher Education is dependent upon the intellectual curiosity and ambition of its students. You get out of it what you put in. Students are not coddled, they are given a massive amount of responsibility- namely control over thier own intellectual development. When I consider the amount of personal debt which individuals in the United Stated, or even Canada or Sweden, take on for the chance to receive a higher education, I simply cannot understand the viewpoints of the German students. (especially as the protests seem to involve a lot of grilling, techno and juggling) My view is - Were there more academic engagement from students, i question whether the current political engagement would be necisarry.
