On August 14, in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, the journalist and blogger Hisham Al-Omeisy was arrested by armed Huthis and taken to the Secret Service building. Since then, he has been detained there and held incommunicado from the outside world. Once he has been given the opportunity to call his family, but no details are known.
Omeisy permanently had reported on the events in Yemen on Twitter and elsewhere. Above all, he was one of the most important voices from Yemen; this was even more important in view of the neglect of Yemen in Western media. Omeisy is an independent spirit, who mainly dealt with the war crimes of the Saudi coalition, but also criticized the side of the Huthis and Saleh supporters.

Apart from the news that Omeisy was able to call his family, unfortunately there are no other news.
So here again is the demand to the Huthis: Finally free Hisham Al-Omeisy!

Houthi rebels detain activist who brought Yemen war to outside world

Omeisy’s last post on Twitter indicated that “armed” forces had showed up at his doorstep. He is now being held in an undisclosed location.

Amnesty International criticised what it described as Omeisy’s arbitrary detention. “Hisham al-Omeisy has been detained without charge or a court appearance in breach of Yemen’s constitution, which requires anybody arrested to be presented in court within 24 hours,” said Samah Hadid, Amnesty’s director of campaigns in the Middle East.

“This detention illustrates the lengths to which local Houthi-Saleh authorities are willing to go to silence peaceful activists. Hisham al-Omeisy is a prisoner of conscience, whose only ‘crime’ is peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression, and he must be released immediately.”

Omeisy, 38, has provided crucial insights into the war in Yemen, where international journalists have been prevented from reporting on the ground.

Speaking to the Guardian last year, Omeisy described the situation in Yemen as “Syria on steroids”, warning that the country was on a fast lane to disintegrating as a state, with al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula and Islamic State exploiting the power vacuum to expand their foothold in the growing number of ungoverned areas.

When asked who he blamed, he replied: “[I] will need more than 1,000 words to begin answering that question as one will have to deconstruct multiple incidents over a period of the past few years and correctly assign blame to parties … [a] domino effect of a series of missteps and unfortunate events led us to where we are today.

“But I will say this, though Houthis are guilty of hijacking and mismanaging the state, it is the Saudi-led coalition that held the whole nation hostage to the current conflict.”

Human Rights Watch’s Middle East director, Sarah Leah Whitson, echoed Amnesty’s concerns about Omeisy’s detention. “Yemen more than ever needs activists like Hisham al-Omeisy to bring attention to the devastation that war, famine and disease have wrought on the country and its people,” she said.

The Modern Gandhian. Missiles Vs Memes.

Today @omeisy enjoys the honorable company of Ahmed Jahaf whose social media posters depict the injustice upon Yemen. However it was first @omeisy who grabbed the attention of Twitter with his memes on the war.

In fact it was through memes that I came to know of and support Omeisy’s struggle for Yemen’s self determination. Browsing through retweets on someone’s timeline, I saw a gif of a cartoon character looking dazed; the accompanying tweet by @omeisy, mentioned that violent airstrikes had left him disoriented. I clicked on Omeisy’s tweet and saw his timeline chronicle the relentless bloodshed in Yemen.

Instead of angry accusations, bitter sarcasm and threats of retaliation, @omeisy chose to tell the truth of the war non-violently through memes.

Sometimes his menes and gifs were sad. Often they were funny as he used humor as a weapon against the indignity of war. Relying on memes and gifs to talk about airstrikes, deprivation and anarchy, @omeisy resisted violence against his people.

The most beautiful smile is a smile through tears. And it was impossible to shrug off his tweets and walk out on @omeisy who so non-violently and endearingly protested. So I chose to stay and make his struggle mine, his tears mine and his voice mine. Many others who follow him have done the same and for the same reasons.

It has been very tough to bear witness to the brutal Yemen war and civil strife.

Hisham Omeisy drew people to him because he was very balanced in his views and truthful. If you wanted political gossip you could go elsewhere. Omeisy wanted no part in that. Since his forced disappearance, his voice of maturity and discrimination is sorely missed on Twitter Yemen where he was @omeisy.

Yemen: imprisoned journalist denied medical care

Journalist Yahya Abdulraqeeb al-Jubeihi is suffering from serious health problems after being denied access to proper medical care in prison.

The IFJ has joined its affiliate the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate (YJS) in condemning his treatment and called on his captors to release him immediately so he can be properly treated. The IFJ and YJS also call for the immediate release of all imprisoned journalists in Yemen.

Al-Jubeihi’s family visited the journalist in detention and informed the YJS that he is bedridden and in poor health. The family told the union that the prison authorities did not afford him adequate health care or allow him to be transferred to a hospital to treat his condition.

Al-Jubeihi, 61, is a prominent figure in the Yemeni press, having written regularly for Saudi dailies Okaz and Al-Madina and other Yemeni newspapers as well as serving in the press department for former president Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi during the 1990s and 2000s. In September of last year, al-Jubeihi was arrested by Houthi security forces and accused of treason. After 8 months of detention he was sentenced to death by the Houthi Security Court on charges of spying for Saudi Arabia, which has led a military intervention in Yemen against the Houthi rebels since 2015.
