Houthis kidnap pro-journalist in Sanaa

The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate said that it had received information from fellow journalists saying that the journalist Abed al-Mahthari, the editor of the Al-Diyar weekly newspaper, had been kidnapped by the Houthis-Saleh militants in Sanaa.

In a statement, the Syndicate said that the kidnapping came "after a day of threats by the Houthi group leaders in a meeting with a number of journalists threatened to go prison and punishment on the background of opinion and publication issues."

The statement condemned the kidnapping of Abed al-Muhaddari and the repressive threats against journalists, also called for the speedy release of their colleague and not compromising his security and safety.

The cessation of the speech of incitement against journalists and the loading of the weights of politicians and military must be stopped. the statement mentioned.

Back to school? Not in Yemen

4.5 million school students in Yemen will not be able to resume their classes this coming school year.

As with several other sectors in Yemen, education is facing numerous difficulties. Teachers have not been paid for a year. It may seem a minor issue to those leading the war on either side. It does not move them to know that 4.5 million children will not miss out on an education while teachers cannot eke out a living.

This month, the UN High Commission for Human Rights revealed that 1702 children had been recruited by armed groups on both sides of the conflict.
Now with schools empty and shuttered, that number is likely to increase exponentially.

With impalpable progress and staggering humanitarian crisis, Hadi's internationally recognised government continues to lose power by the day. Therefore, Saudi Arabia should correct its course by withdrawing from Yemen militarily while maintaining humanitarian aid. It should avoid shifting alliance towards the secessionist forces, like Hirak al-Junub in South Yemen, because such a move will diminish any prospect of ending the war.

Heads, Saudi loses. Tails, Iran wins

Saudi Arabia's volatile decision-making and Iran's savvy strategic moves have put the Persian country on top

However many twists and turns the crisis of Sunni leadership takes, one regional power always seems to come out on top. That country is Iran.

Iran’s threat to intervene militarily was one of the factors that thwarted Saudi Arabia’s plans to invade Qatar at the very start of the blockade. I understand from informed sources that Iran proved to be a more important deterrent when Riyadh was contemplating sending tanks over the border than the token presence of Turkish troops in Doha.

It takes an instrument akin to a seismometer to monitor the sudden shifts and lurches in Saudi foreign policy.

Iran is winning the battle but it has so far failed to win the war. Its intervention in the Arab world has created much division that will be hard to heal. Millions of Sunnis are refugees in their own country and if a top Syrian commander has his way, will remain so. Sectarian conflict is easy to start but much harder to stop. History will not stop at this point, and if Iran is to be part of the regional peace it has to think about how it will heal the sectarian divisions, which its interventions have sustained. U.N. Enablers of ‘Aggressive War’

U.N. investigative reports, like a new one condemning Syria for alleged sarin use, are received as impartial and credible, but are often just more war propaganda from compromised bureaucrats

Many people still want to believe that the United Nations engages in impartial investigations and thus is more trustworthy than, say, self-interested governments, whether Russia or the United States. But trust in U.N. agencies is no longer well placed; whatever independence they may have once had has been broken, a reality relevant to recent “investigations” of Syrian chemical weapons use.

The Charter declares in Article One that it is a chief U.N. purpose “to take effective collective measures … for the suppression of acts of aggression or other breaches of the peace.” Article Two, which defines the appropriate behavior of U.N. members, adds that “All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state…”

However, instead of enforcing this fundamental rule, the United Nations has, in effect, caved in to the political and financial pressure brought to bear by the United States and its allies. How France Participates in the Yemen Conflict

According to hitherto undisclosed data revealed to Orient XXI by the Observatoire des Armements, the French government used a contract for weapons ostensibly meant for Lebanon to prepare for the Kingdom’s war in Yemen and speed up delivery at the height of that conflict.

The readiness displayed by French arms manufacturers to comply with Saudi requests is a reflection of the close ties between the two countries which go back many years. While it is extremely difficult to obtain precise information on this very secretive subject, some sources are available.

Moreover, when selling weapons such as the Mirage, the Rafale or the Leclerc tank, France commits itself to a period of maintenance which may last anywhere from fifteen to twenty-five years. It is therefore tied for all that time to the policies of the client State.

Saudi Arabia’s school religious studies curriculum contains hateful and incendiary language toward religions and Islamic traditions that do not adhere to its interpretation of Sunni Islam, Human Rights Watch said today. The texts disparage Sufi and Shia religious practices and label Jews and Christians “unbelievers” with whom Muslims should not associate.

A comprehensive Human Rights Watch review of the Education Ministry-produced school religion books for the 2016-17 school year found that some of the content that first provoked widespread controversy for violent and intolerant teachings in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks remains in the texts today, despite Saudi officials’ promises to eliminate the intolerant language.

Yemen: Coalition Airstrikes Deadly for Children

UN Should Create International Inquiry, Return Coalition to ‘List of Shame’

The Saudi-led coalition carried out five apparently unlawful airstrikes in Yemen since June 2017 that killed 26 children among 39 civilian deaths, Human Rights Watch said today. The attacks, which struck four family homes and a grocery, in one case killing 14 members of the same family, caused indiscriminate loss of civilian life in violation of the laws of war. Such attacks carried out deliberately or recklessly are war crimes.

“The Saudi-led coalition’s repeated promises to conduct its airstrikes lawfully are not sparing Yemeni children from unlawful attacks,” said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “These latest airstrikes and their horrible toll on children should galvanize the Human Rights Council to denounce and act to investigate war crimes, and ensure that those responsible are held to account.”

UN Human Rights Council Must Establish Impartial Commission of Inquiry for Yemen

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNCHR) has the legal authority and supporting precedents to establish an independent international commission of investigation (“CoI”) in respect of the conflict in Yemen. Its failure to do so is completely inconsistent with well-established UN practice.

UN Security Council (UNSC) and UNCHR Resolutions provide ample authority to set up an appropriately staffed and empowered CoI to investigate allegations of human rights violations in Yemen

International precedents demonstrate the anomaly of the UNCHR’s failure to act.

The failure of action by the UNCHR and other UN bodies with respect to Yemen is particularly grave in view of the enormous impact of violations of international law upon the civilian population.

Saudi Arabia has insisted the time is not right for an independent international inquiry into the war in Yemen, despite growing evidence of human rights violations caused by the Saudi-led campaign against the Houthis.

Saudi Arabia prefers no UN Yemen war crime inquiry due to 'timing'

Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United Nations on Wednesday questioned the timing of an international inquiry into rights violations in Yemen, saying "conditions on the ground" would hamper the investigation. "We are working together to hopefully come to a compromise," said Abdulaziz Al-Wasil, Saudi Arabia's envoy to Geneva.

"We have no objection to the inquiry itself, we just have a discussion about the timing, whether this is the right time to establish an international commission, with the difficulties on the ground," said Al-Wasil.

My comment: The Saudis simply do not want such an international inquiry at all. The idea of “bad timing” is a bad joke. The right time will be: Never. – But air is getting thinner for the Saudis, therefore this new move which in reality changes nothing. But thus, own and supporting western propaganda can invent headlines as “Saudis back int'l probe of Yemen crimes”, which simply is a lie.

The Saudis’ preference for a “national” inquiry is linked to their support for the so-called “legitimate” government. Just as they did two years ago, the Saudis don’t want an international inquiry that has at least some chance of being impartial and independent.

Comment: This man is a total idiot. He knows that he is so unpopular in Yemen that he can't set foot in even areas under his 'control' except in brief unannounced visits - and even then he has to stay with a secure guard. It seems to me that the person who is impossible in negotiations is Hadi. He knows that whatever the solution in Yemen he will never be president after the war ends - hatred of Hadi is the one unifying factor amongst most sections of Yemeni society. So he does everything he can to stop the war ending. In UAE he is not welcome and the UAE troops have even stopped his plane from landing in Aden. What a loser. He has asked his neighbours to kill his own people for him - seeing that his own army didn't support him - and destroyed his own country - for power. Victims of trafficking rings say the networks operate anonymously in shisha bars and coffee shops in Yemen and Egypt.

The silence has been deafening on the crisis in Yemen among government delegates at the third annual Conference of States Parties to the Arms Trade Treaty, said the international Control Arms Coalition today as the conference draws to a close. Muscat has secured the release of an Indian priest who was abducted last year during a deadly attack by Islamist militants in Yemen, Oman's official news agency said on Tuesday.

Cinema in Yemen: 'Nothing is impossible'

In a historic Oscars entry, movie by Yemeni director Khadija al-Salami will vie for best foreign language film award.

For the first time in the country's history, Yemen has entered a film into the Academy Awards competition in the category of best foreign language film.
