Yemeni Colonel dies due to torture

A colonel of the Yemeni security forces Mohammed al-Janadi died on Saturday due to torture he was subjected to in a Houthi prison.

Security sources told Alsahwa Net al-Jandadi died one month after being released by the Houthis, pointing out that he stayed one year inside a prison run by Houthi-Saleh militias.

At Least 21 Journalists Held Captive by Houthi Militias in Yemen

Journalists in Yemen are the subject to ongoing oppression and tragic setback as insurgency militias exercise brutal authority inhibiting the press.

Iran-allied Houthi militias along with armed loyalists backing ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh have employed coercive control against the Sana’a-based government news agency and independent partisan outlets since the start of the coup.

Meanwhile, voices are raised demanding the release of journalists detained by coup militias, the number of captives rose to 21 journalists last week.

Houthi militias arrested a number of pro-coup journalists, most of which advocating Saleh loyalists forces.

Despite the coup’s so-called Supreme Political Council President Saleh al-Samad ordering the release of Yahya Abdel-Raqib al-Jubeihi who is both journalist and university professor that was sentenced by the Houthi court to death for his anti-coup views, he remains in lock up.

Samad also issued directives to free remaining detained journalists, but none of the orders were followed with action.

Al-Maqri, a journalist imprisoned by the extremist al-Qaeda off-shoot AQAP, is still held in captivity. He was kidnapped by the terror group in Hadramout before pro-government forces, backed by the Saudi-led Arab coalition, liberated the city of Mukalla and other coastal cities in April 2016.

According to Nabil al-Asidi, a member of the Yemeni Syndicate of Journalists, “most detainees in the hands of militias are subjected to torture, psychological trauma, and are suffering from many diseases.”

“Militias refuse to treat them or offer them medical assistance,” Asidi told Asharq Al-Awsat.

My comment: This article seems to be correct, but of course it is a bad joke that it is published by a Saudi media – the Saudis also jailing and torturing journalists, and also – the Houthis don’t do that – flogging them.

Yemeni Shiite rebel officials say a prominent journalist who was sentenced to death over accusations of collaborating with a Saudi-led coalition battling the group has been pardoned.

He said: "In this regard, and we are keen to silence the tongues of bidders, we commend the role played by the security and intelligence services and the judiciary in the accountability of all those who have been proven to be involved with the aggression of any category were and confirm the correctness of all actions taken in this context against many cells and intelligence elements Which are moving to serve the aggression, including many who hide the media work to implement some of the agenda that serves the aggression, whether they felt or did not feel that their work serves aggression or participated in provocative acts that cause strife and differences among the people and we consider that any positions serve the enemy N crimes deserve to be punished by the Constitution and the law. The President of the Supreme Political Council ordered the judiciary and security bodies to complete the legal procedures for amnesty for those who cover up the press, media and the press in an urgent and extraordinary manner to complete the amnesty measures for Yahya Abdelraqeeb Al-Jubeihi, who was recently sentenced to evidence and recognition for his health. My comment: That’s good news. The reason which had been given for this sentence was a pretense; he had been sentenced because he was a journalist disliked by the Houthis and the Saleh followers. In the meantime, he has been released.

Arabic press review: Houthis 'ban journalism' in Yemen

Newspaper reports Houthis threaten journalists with arrest

Political and media sources in Yemen reported that Houthis banned journalists from working in the capital Sanaa and other areas under their control, according to the London-based newspaper, al-Quds al-Arabi. They also threatened to arrest all those who practise journalism.

Mohammed Hamid, the Houthi information minister, threatened to imprison all those who are practising journalism and media work outside Houthi institutions, the newspaper said.

Other sources in Sanaa said the Houthis had already begun arresting some of the journalists affiliated to their ostensible ally and former president, Abdullah Ali Saleh.

Yemen: IFJ welcomes UN report amid calls for action on journalists' safety

The IFJ has helped set up a Safety Plan of Action for Yemen Media. It calls for the warring sides to denounce targeted attacks against journalists, and to ensure that all incidents of violence against journalists are fully investigated, ensure all military and security personnel are fully trained on the rights of journalists in a conflict situation and on their responsibilities to protect and facilitate the work of media, and for the release of all detained journalists unharmed.

Jim Boumelha, the IFJ representative at the meeting said: “Since this conflict started, journalists have been accused by all the warring parties of affiliating with rival parties and serving their interests. As a result, they face threats of being killed and tortured on a daily basis. We hear frequent accounts of how media are regularly targeted by both sides, becoming victims of both the indiscriminate bombings by the Saudi-led coalition and armed groups on the grounds including sniper attacks and kidnapping.

“Journalists are forced to operate without adequate safety training, protective equipment, or insurance. And when media houses were taken by the rebels, journalists were faced with a terrible dilemma – either to leave or to follow their editorial line in an increasingly precarious and hostile atmosphere for independent reporters.

“And it is not only them but their families who have suffered – as hundreds were forced out from their jobs, this cut the income for their families. And several hundreds too have had to flee the country, forced from their homes in search of safety for their families”.

We hope and believe that the OHCHR report and the ensuing debate can mark a new starting point in the government accepting its responsibility in ensuring the safety and protection of journalists, and committing themselves to a long-term post-conflict programme to build an independent, democratic, public service media in Yemen”.

http://www.ifj.org/nc/news-single-view/category/news/article/yemen-ifj-welcomes-un-report-amid-calls-for-action-on-journalists-safety/

My comment: It’s a fail that the IFJ is just speaking of the obligations.

Situation of human rights in Yemen, including violations and abuses since September 2014

Report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights*

Since the beginning of the conflict, an effective campaign of repression has been waged by both the de facto authorities in Sana’a and the Government against journalists, activists and other civil society members through restrictions on freedom of expression, intimidation, arbitrary and illegal detentions, enforced disappearances and killings.

“Since 2015, the de facto authorities in Sana’a have blocked 21 news websites, censored seven television channels and banned 18 newspapers from publication…pro-government forces have censored seven television channels and raided seven organizations. As a consequence of this repression, few avenues remain for free expression and a chilling effect has led to self-censorship. Many activists have left the country for fear of reprisals.

“Individual journalists and activists have borne the brunt of this repression, with 74 arbitrarily or illegally detained by all parties. As of June 2017, at least 16 journalists remained detained, all by the de facto authorities. In one notable case, nine journalists taken by the de facto authorities in a single raid on 9 June 2015 in Sana’a remain in custody. The journalists were held for months incommunicado, and have been denied family visits at various stages as they have been transferred between different facilities. OHCHR is concerned that these and other detainees face a serious risk of torture or ill-treatment”.

Film: The New Barbarianism – Yemen's Cage – Chapter 4 of 6

Despite large-scale destruction and ever-worsening humanitarian and healthcare crises, the war in Yemen has been largely invisible to the outside world.

What results from this combination of forces is an utterly massive human crisis: over half of the population with no access to health services, acute malnutrition, a rising famine, and an epoch outbreak of cholera.

Local power bases rise from the ashes in Yemen

Viewed from outside, the war in Yemen is mainly a two-sided conflict between the "legitimate" government of President Hadi and the Houthi rebels backed by ex-President Saleh. But this fails to recognise the extent of Yemen's fragmentation since the outbreak of war, a former government minister warned yesterday: the initial collapse of central government has been followed by the emergence of new – localised – power bases which cannot be ignored in any future peace efforts.

"This initial breakdown and then the gradual build-up of power in these different pockets is a trend that is not being captured yet, especially by the international community or the interventions of the special UN envoy," Rafat al-Akhali told a meeting in London – by: Brian Whitaker

Comment: This is a really good article and explains something of the complexities of the war in Yemen. Of course fragmentation has occurred throughout the Middle East in response to war and aggression. Well worth a read.

The Unfolding UN Failure in the Yemen War

Despite the two previous unsuccessful attempts to pass a draft resolution to establish a UN independent international investigation commission into possible Yemen war crimes, sixty-seven Human Rights groups recently initiated another call demanding the establishment of the inquiry commission. The call for a commission is unlikely to be successful, but if it is formed it runs the risk of being hijacked by state interests and failing to hold accountable certain actors, particularly members of the Saudi-led coalition who wield influence at the United Nations.

Without full political backing, a commission of inquiry will likely be fruitless.

The United Nations’ systematic failure to take positive steps to hold the Saudi-led coalition responsible is because it is subject to the nation-states it represents and dependent on their funds – by Afrah Nasser

Yemen: Is Saleh's alliance with the Houthis breakable?

On the third anniversary of Sanaa's capture, Saleh's unholy alliance with the Hautis may be nearing its end.

Saleh's alliance with the Houtis was a secretive pact in the beginning, but it was fully exposed after the start of the Saudi-led war on March 26, 2015. Now, this alliance is part of a de-facto coalition government in Sanaa. Nonetheless, this alliance is at best a political marriage of convenience rather than love, with inherent political contradictions that far exceed Saleh and the Houthis current shared goal of defeating the Saudi-led coalition.

Nevertheless, the Saleh-Houthi alliance is breakable and it will be the Houthis who decide the right time to disengage themselves from Saleh. Taking a page from Saleh's book of political cunning and manipulation, the Houthis view their alliance with the former president as a means to control government, military, financial, and judiciary institutions. The Houthis are closer than ever to achieving that goal and are now so politically emboldened that they are campaigning publicly for Abd al-Malik al-Houthi's right to rule Yemen based on the theory of Wilayat Al-Faqih, the legitimate right of a Muslim Jurist to rule.

The Houthis have recently erected billboards on the streets of Sanaa depicting the Houthi leader and advocating his right to rule. This followed controversial changes to the Yemeni school curriculum promoting the Houthi ideology. Through these political moves, the Houthis seem determined to at least monopolise control of North Yemen. Thus, the current escalation between Saleh and the Houthis should not be viewed as an isolated event, but as part of the Houthis' carefully calculated political plan to eliminate Saleh with the lowest possible cost.

Rights debate, internal disputes

The parties that are competing to perpetrate human rights violations on the ground in Yemen are also rivalling to claim a monopoly on the right to investigate and report on the horrors. So far, the internationally recognised government of Yemen, backed by Riyadh and Washington, has secured the “legal” title to do this.

In the opinion of many, it does not make sense for Riyadh to be “both adversary and arbitrator” when it comes to the question of human rights violations in Yemen.

Just as the Arab coalition’s military push in western Yemen enjoys US air and naval support, so too does the Arab position on the rights investigations enjoy US diplomatic backing. Washington’s representative at the Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva, Michelle Robit, expressed her government’s fears that the creation of a completely independent international investigatory committee “would probably not lead us to where we want”.

The US-Gulf resistance to the Dutch-Canadian sponsored resolution is, at least in part, driven why the fear that the human rights dimension of the Yemeni crisis could become a new means to pressure the coalition into yielding to proposals for a political solution that, from the Saudi perspective, will fall short of the goals of its war in Yemen – by Hossam Radman

Exposed: France's arms dealers making a killing in Yemen

The US and UK are often lambasted for their sales of weaponry to Saudi Arabia. But France cannot be overlooked

French authorities opened a military base in Abu Dhabi for equipment demonstrations, at the risk of compromising the country's political independence for the sake of arms sales.

In 2016, some 50 percent of the orders placed with the French industry came from the Middle East. The Saudi monarchy remains its number one client, having purchased nearly nine billion euros ($10.8bn) of weaponry between 2010 and 2016, representing some 15 to 20 percent of France's annual arms exports.
These weapons are easily adapted to conditions in Yemen as they were built to the requirements of wealthy Middle East countries either at war or affected by chronic instability. According to previously undisclosed data supplied by the French board, l'Observatoire des Armements, France and Saudi Arabia made covert use of a contract meant for Lebanon to prepare for war in Yemen.

King Salman and His Son: Winning the US, Losing the Rest

This series of articles assess the prospects for new directions in Saudi foreign policy, highlighting the continuities and discontinuities under the new leadership of King Salman and his son Muhammad. The tentative conclusion drawn is that amidst a series of foreign policy failures, winning the favour of the US under Trump has been the major achievement of the new Saudi leadership. However, Saudi foreign policy in Europe has – as ever – taken a back seat and today in several European capitals there is serious doubt as to the merit of this newly assertive and interventionist Saudi regional policy, considered by some to be destabilising the Arab world. With the US once again the old Saudi patron and ally, King Salman and his son see little need to pay attention to Europe, and are instead continuing on their erratic bid to control the region and emerge as a regional power on a par with Iran, Turkey and Israel, though with decidedly mixed results.

King Salman’s new appointments in June 2017 are destined to generate more ambiguity and speculation after he dies, especially as concerns Saudi Arabia’s international relations. The Failed War on Yemen Must End

The rift between Hadi and the UAE is worth noting for what it tells us about the “legitimate” government of Yemen and its nominal supporters in the Gulf. Hadi didn’t care that the UAE and the other members of the coalition were running roughshod over Yemen’s sovereignty when they intervened in the name of restoring him to power. The “legitimate” president was happy to have foreign governments attack and occupy large portions of his country when it was ostensibly done for his benefit, but he is now so loathed inside Yemen that he has little value to his sponsors. Hadi has to hide behind Yemen’s sovereignty now because he has so little support inside Yemen. The UAE decided he was useless and made arrangements with other local political actors with real influence – by Daniel Larison

Somalia's Puntland region captures weapons-laden boat from Yemen

Somalia’s semi-autonomous region of Puntland seized a boat loaded with weapons from Yemen in Saturday’s early hours, the regional maritime police chief said.

Puntland authorities displayed dozens of anti-aircraft guns, machine guns, AK-47 rifles and dozens of boxes of ammunition seized from the boat after it was stopped in coastal waters off the Horn of Africa region.

The Saudi-led coalition clearly targets humanitarian work in Yemen

The Red Sea Ports Corporation said that the coalition that is imposed by KSA had forced the FULMAR vessel out of the area before it finished emptying the cargo and was told to directly move 65 miles out of the Ghatas area that is located at the port of Hodeidah province. The ship was carrying 25 thousand tons of wheat material that was sent by the World Food Programme organization. The ship arrived Thursday morning to the submarine of the port of Hodeidah, eastern Yemen.

The aforementioned organization said in a statement that this is not the first time the coalition forced relief vessels to withdraw from the al-Ghatees area in the port of Hodeidah

The pain of conflict permeates deeply into communities. Statement to the UN General Assembly on the Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen

Speech by ICRC President Peter Maurer, High-Level Event on the Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen, United Nations General Assembly, 72nd session.

This indeed extends far beyond a localized conflict.

ICRC has doubled its budget this year to around 100 million dollars, our third largest operation worldwide.

There are some questions that need to be asked.

Failed diplomacy strangles civilians in Yemen

“Privileged neighbours and regional powers bring fuel to the fire, while Yemeni civilians pay the price for the war,” said Jan Egeland, Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, ahead of a scheduled meeting today at the UN General Assembly to discuss Yemen’s escalating humanitarian crisis.

“The senceless war represents a collapse in international diplomacy. The UN was established to prevent suffering of the kind we are now witnessing, but cannot serve its mandate as long as it is at the mercy of member states with diverging interests and priorities that actively prevent peace,” he said.

Audio: Vanessa Beeley on Yemen: ‘Saudi, US are Now Guilty of War Crimes’

21WIRE Associate Editor Vanessa Beeley speaks to host Patrick Henningsen about the current deteriorating situation in Yemen. Beeley gives a comprehensive breakdown and heart-felt analysis of the conflict during Episode #202 of the SUNDAY WIRE radio show. What’s become clear now after 2 and half years of an undeclared war of aggression on neighbouring Yemen, is that Saudi Arabia and its allies – particularly the US and UK – are now guilty of international war crimes for their illegal and sordid roles in targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, and generating mass suffering and death in the country.

Yemen: deadly strike on houses in Sana'a last month was with US-made bomb - new evidence

A bomb that destroyed a residential building in Yemen's capital last month, killing 16 civilians and injuring 17 more - including a five-year-old girl called Buthaina whose photograph went viral in the strike’s aftermath - was made in the USA, Amnesty International has revealed today (22 September).

“There simply is no explanation the USA or other countries such as the UK and France can give to justify the continued flow of weapons to the Saudi Arabia-led coalition for use in the conflict in Yemen. It has time and time again committed serious violations of international law, including war crimes, over the past 30 months, with devastating consequences for the civilian population.

“It is shameful that instead of holding the coalition accountable for their actions in Yemen, key allies including the USA and the UK have continued to supply it with huge quantities of arms.

CHILDREN AT WAR: SAUDI ARABIA IS BOMBING YEMEN BUT BLAMES HUMANITARIAN DISASTER ON IRAN-BACKED HOUTHIS

As world leaders gather in New York for the United Nations General Assembly this week, Dr. Abdullah al-Rabeeah, head of Saudi Arabia’s King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center and an adviser to the royal court, has been busy shuttling between Turtle Bay and Washington, D.C., to underscore how much medical, food and financial aid the kingdom has given to Yemen’s war-ravaged civilians. The aim of his public relations blitz appears to be twofold: to deflect attention from the two-year air campaign by a Saudi-led military coalition against Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, and to keep Riyadh off a U.N. list of countries that kill and cripple children in war (following interview; with film)

Despite the relentless efforts of national and international NGOs to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people, aid alone cannot solve the multiple, interlinked crises that people in Yemen have to cope with on a daily basis. Suffering grips Yemen three years after rebel takeover

Three years after Iran-backed rebels swept into Sanaa, a semblance of normality has returned to the Yemeni capital. But across the war-wracked country a humanitarian disaster is unfolding.

The only Arab capital controlled by an armed rebel movement, Sanaa lives under the constant threat of air strikes by a Saudi-led coalition fighting in support of the internationally recognised government.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/afp/article-4902496/Suffering-grips-Yemen-three-years-rebel-takeover.html

My comment: Overview with an odd beginning. The suffering hardly can be combined with the rebel takeover in 2014. And, it’s odd to say that Sanaa still is “controlled by an armed rebel movement” when this movement has seized power three years ago. They are government now, no more “rebels” – or do Western media really think that their definitions are more than dictated by Western political interests? – If this allegation should be true, than we also must say that Kiev is the “only European capital controlled by an armed rebel movement”.

Women are helping those around them by organizing food relief and taking care of people in need.

Since the start of the latest Yemen conflict in 2015, women’s daily lives have been deeply impacted – among other difficulties, those who have been widowed struggle to provide for their families and it’s harder for pregnant women to access maternal care. Houthi-Saleh alliance increasingly likely to break down in Yemen, altering the course of the conflict

A key source of contention concerns the implementation of the political agreement signed by Saleh and the Houthis in July 2016 to run areas under their control.

There is an increasing likelihood of the alliance breaking down in the six-month outlook, given the Saudi-led coalition’s willingness to exploit disagreements between Saleh and the Houthis.

Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mr. Mark Lowcock Remarks at High-Level Event on Yemen in the margins of the UN General Assembly, UN Headquarters, New York, 22 September 2017

Of course, only negotiations and a political settlement can put an end to this appalling, man-made crisis. We strongly support the efforts of the Special Envoy of the SecretaryGeneral towards this goal.

At the same time, we must ensure that the principle of humanity – and not political considerations – continues to guide our relief efforts.

https://reliefweb.int/report/yemen/under-secretary-general-humanitarian-affairs-and-emergency-relief-coordinator-mr-mark

My comment: The only ones who are namely blamed are the so-called (“de facto authorities in Sana’a” (this phraseology is unmasking for the UN’s bias in this war) for delays in the distribution of humanitarian aid – while letting the Saudis and their allies unnamed, blaming nobody for the Saudi blockade which is much more severe: “fluctuating restrictions on commercial imports are reducing availability of these commodities” or “The closure of Sana’a airport to commercial traffic has blocked”. Odd. The ants walking on the runway have closed Sanaa airport, did they??

'No hope on the horizon' for Yemen, U.N. humanitarian official says

Devastated by conflict, widespread cholera and the total collapse of infrastructure, Yemen has reached the precipice of a humanitarian catastrophe and there is “no hope” for resolving the crisis anytime soon.

“The prescription for the future at the very best is bleak,” said Jamie McGoldrick, the U.N.’s resident humanitarian coordinator in Yemen. “It’s a disaster. I believe I’ll be coming back to [the U.N. Saudi Arabia stuck with self-inflicted wounds in battle with Iran
Recent revelations about Saudi Crown Prince
Mohammed bin Salman’s private remarks on regional developments to former senior US officials confirm what many in Washington have been whispering the last few years: Many Saudi policies in the region — from the war in Yemen to confronting Iran — have been miserable failures. Even Saudi Arabia’s energy policy, which partially focused on punishing Iran and forcing it to retreat from its adventurism in the Middle East, has had the effect of forcing the kingdom into record budget deficits. In the meantime, Iran continues to advance its agenda in Syria and Iraq. It should now be painfully obvious to the Saudi leadership that their tunnel vision on Iran has resulted in policies that backfire at home and abroad.

Sanders Speaks on Foreign Policy

Bernie Sanders delivered a fairly wide-ranging foreign policy speech at Westminster College in Fulton, MO earlier today. He outlined in broad strokes his views for what U.S. foreign policy includes and what it should do. Among other things, he also spoke directly against U.S. support for the Saudi-led war on Yemen.

He is in a position right now where he can call attention to policies like this one and get large numbers of Americans to take notice.

Sanders directly challenges the bias in our foreign policy debates in favor of “doing something” in which “something” is almost always some military option.

Bernie Sanders Just Gave the Progressive Foreign-Policy Speech We’ve Been Waiting For

The senator powerfully linked domestic and foreign policy in the context of massive global inequality.

He reminds us that America’s history of interventions—from Iran to Chile to right now in Yemen—have a habit of having devastating results. And he reminds us that there is a path between endless war and isolationism

Sanders points to two diametrically opposed visions of American foreign policy that played out in recent years. In reminding us of the horrors of the Iraq War and juxtaposing it with the unbridled success of the Iran nuclear deal, Bernie helps make clear that this is not some esoteric debate.

Read: Bernie Sanders's big foreign policy speech

Sanders didn’t use this opportunity to speak about an existential enemy. Instead, he used it to advocate a progressive foreign policy, one that called on America to focus on the well-being of individuals around the world.

“In my view, the United States must seek partnerships not just between governments, but between peoples,” Sanders said. “A sensible and effective foreign policy recognizes that our safety and welfare is bound up with the safety and welfare of others around the world.”

Unfortunately, today we still have examples of the United States supporting policies that I believe will come back to haunt us. One is the ongoing Saudi war in Yemen.

Such policies dramatically undermine America’s ability to advance a human rights agenda around the world, and empowers authoritarian leaders who insist that our support for those rights and values is not serious.

Bernie Sanders: Saudi Arabia Is “Not an Ally” and the U.S. Should “Rethink” Its Approach to Iran

Saudi Arabia is

“not an ally of the United States,” according to Bernie Sanders, the independent senator and former Democratic presidential hopeful.

Sanders broke with the bipartisan consensus on Capitol Hill in an exclusive interview with The Intercept. The United States has long considered Saudi Arabia to be a loyal friend, supporter, and partner in the so-called war on terror.

Sanders issued a scathing denunciation of the Gulf kingdom, which has recently embarked on a new round of domestic repression.

“I consider [Saudi Arabia] to be an undemocratic country that has supported terrorism around the world, it has funded terrorism. … They are not an ally of the United States.”

Exclusive: Trump to weigh more aggressive U.S. strategy on Iran - sources

President Donald Trump is weighing a strategy that could allow more aggressive U.S. responses to Iran’s forces, its Shi‘ite Muslim proxies in Iraq and Syria, and its support for militant groups, according to six current and former U.S. officials.

The proposal was prepared by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, national security adviser H.R. McMaster and other top officials, and presented to Trump at a National Security Council meeting on Friday, the sources said.

Trump’s UN Speech

I wonder if whoever wrote the deplorable speech intended to embarrass Trump and inadvertently embarrassed America as well, or whether the speechwriter(s) is so imbued with the neoconservative arrogance and hubris of our time that the speechwriter was simply blind to the extraordinary contradictions that stood out like sore thumbs all through the speech.

The Glaring Omissions in Trump’s U.N. Speech

Trump said a lot of harmful and dangerous things in this U.N. speech today, but it is also worth noting the things that he chose to leave out.

The most obvious omission in the speech was also the most predictable: Trump said nothing about the Saudi-led war on Yemen or its role in causing the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, and when he did mention Yemen at one point it was perversely to claim credit for providing humanitarian aid for the catastrophe that our government has helped create.

It is a given that the Saudis and Iranians are judged by two very different standards by this administration, but emphasizing the minimal Iranian role in Yemen while completely ignoring the massive, devastating role that the Saudis and their allies (and the U.S.) have had is as bad as it gets. As usual, those most responsible for the suffering of the people of Yemen weren’t held responsible, the war on Yemen was ignored, and Trump’s Iran obsession won out – by Daniel Larison

Descent into barbarism: Trump makes virtue out of war and genocide at the UN

It can’t get more outrageous. US President Donald Trump stood in front of the United Nations and openly threatened unilateral war and genocide. It’s a sign of the times that such criminal rhetoric is so casually spouted by the world’s biggest military state.

When American leaders address the UN General Assembly, people are generally used to hearing a litany of falsehoods about world events and narcissistic deceptions over America’s global role.

But when Trump made his debut speech on Tuesday, it marked, in addition to the usual American delusions, an unprecedented embrace of criminal militarism – by Finian Cunningham

Donald Trump Used the United Nations to Threaten a Massive Violation of International Law

The United States

has never cared much about international law. But most U.S. presidents had at least made an effort to pretend that they did. Based on President Donald Trump’s speech Tuesday to the United Nations General Assembly, this is yet another American tradition that he’s discarding.

Trump’s Was One of the Most Bizarre UN Speeches in History

Trump’s comments resulted in stone-faced silence from the other world leaders and diplomats gathered inside the General Assembly.

Although most of Trump’s venom was directed against North Korea, he also castigated Iran, Cuba, Syria, and Venezuela. The baring of Trump’s fangs toward the five countries is in keeping with the neo-conservative foreign policy drift of his administration.

Trump, who has made no secret of his racial preference for white Europeans, received no applause from an overwhelming majority of the General Assembly delegates.

The UK government's double standards on arms will be exposed today as it talks arms control in Geneva while hosting one of the world's largest arms sales fairs with invites to representatives of some of the worse repressive regimes in the world, said Oxfam.

About 70% of Rebel Forces in Yemen Are Child Recruits - Foreign Minister

Some 70 percent of the personnel of the rebel forces in Yemen are children, Yemeni Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdulmalik Mekhlafi said Friday.

"Rebels are using children in this war, 70 percent of the personnel are children, children between the ages of nine and 17 … The recruitment of children must be stopped," Mekhlafi said at a session on Yemen at the United Nations.

Iran’s military support for the Houthis is not the biggest threat

But it is not the military equipment, the logistical, financial and intelligence support, or the training from the IRGC and Hezbollah that pose the biggest threat to Gulf security. Accessing arms in Yemen is easy.

Iran’s military support to the Houthis is a symptom of how the Houthi leadership willingly fell into the trap of Iranian hardliners’ revolutionary, radicalizing and instrumental narrative of Muslim (and specifically Shiite) oppression.

The Houthi leadership’s specific branch, Jaroudiah, is closer to Twelver Shiism, and has been shaped further in that direction by Houthi ideologues. They are Zaydi revivalists who have pledged allegiance to Iran’s clerical establishment. The question is, is it too late to bring the Houthis back into the realm of moderation?

Iran Is Smuggling Increasingly Potent Weapons Into Yemen, U.S. Admiral Says

Many points may be questionable, yet, an interesting read from US point of view

Comment: I think this is a way of demonising Iran obliquely - very little mention of the roles of USA UK and Israel in region destabilisation. Of course Iran is an actor in the Middle East but is it a responder or an initiator? The western need to dominate fossil fuel industries seems be be a massive driver of destability in the MENA regions.

If you are a Yemeni photographer who has done work in Yemen, please email a sample of your work to info@yemenpeaceproject.org. We will contact you as soon as possible, and we are excited to begin this new project and explore the art and landscape of Yemen.
