Poll: American Attitudes on Middle East Policies

The Middle East Institute is pleased to announce the results of a nationwide public opinion survey conducted in collaboration with Ipsos. Among the main findings of the poll are the following:

75 percent of Americans believe that the United States should remain engaged in the Middle East:

82 percent of Americans support U.S. engagement in the fight to defeat ISIS, but 73 percent believe the United States is not winning that fight

75 percent of Americans support the nuclear deal with Iran

73 percent support America’s military backing of Israel

http://www.mei.edu/content/article/poll-american-attitudes-middle-east-policies

My comment: It should be made clear what the people really mean when they speak of “remain engaged”: I doubt people really want the US to support local tyrants to bomb other countries and to suppress their own population. For many, “engage” certainly is something different. But the poll did not ask.

Trump Plans to Make It Easier to Kill Civilians with Drones. Sadly, We Can Thank Obama for That.

As the war on terror enters its 17th year, it's clear that abuses of power by one administration lead to abuses by the next.

rescinding the Obama administration’s already lax restrictions on drone attacks — coupled with Trump’s overt and express disregard for human rights and the rule of law — is clearly cause for concern. But that also shouldn’t be a pathway toward normalizing the Obama administration’s own use of drones.

Instead, we need to understand the excesses of the war on terror as a trajectory: The abuse of power under one administration leads to the abuse of power under another. Trump may be driving it more recklessly, but he’s still operating a machine the Obama administration built.

But if the war on terror has taught us anything, it’s that legality is malleable — and never transparent. It’s taught us that accountability is impossible when the laws obscure the crime.

These are a mere handful of the serious moral, ethical, and legal problems surrounding Obama’s use of drones. They point to inconsistencies, performative justice, and a wholesale lack of accountability — all of which characterized the modest restrictions Trump is now rolling back on the global killing program – by Maha Hilal

Trump Ignores Israeli/Saudi Abuses

By offering a propagandistic tirade on Iran’s role in the Mideast – a classic neocon screed – President Trump has demonstrated his inability to bring any fresh or honest thinking to the regional crises.

Trump’s record of statements and of cabinet appointments suggests that regime change in Iran is a long-term goal. Despite his close Saudi ally’s massive involvement in funding and fomenting terrorism, Trump’s evolving strategy for the Middle East strangely emphasizes

Iranian impacts

on the region, particularly regarding the conflict in Yemen.

I wonder if people worldwide can rise to a level of courage and seriousness needed to simply recognize, and then, where possible, act in response to the world’s real threats. Within the U.S., can several decades of U.S. government bipartisan lying about Iran be overcome with saner, more humane narratives? – By Kathy Kelly

Despite Campaign Promises, Arms Shipments to Saudis Skyrocket Under Trump

As a candidate, Trump claimed Saudi Arabia was behind 9/11. But in the first eight months of 2017, the U.S. has delivered a total of $1.56 billion worth of arms to Saudi Arabia.

The Daily Beast found that the Trump administration has shipped Saudi Arabia $561 million in bombs and missiles, $503 million in armored fighting vehicles and parts, and $552 million in parts to maintain military aircraft like Apache gunships, Blackhawk helicopters, and F15 jets for use in their disastrous war in Yemen. The total value of arms delivered to Saudi in 2017 represents a $70 million increase compared with the same eight-month period in 2016.

Arms monitoring experts are critical of the arms increase for a variety of reasons, perhaps chief among them the humanitarian crisis ravaging Yemen.

Saudi Arabia’s Great Makeover Can’t Afford to Fail This Time

The real pain is just starting as the kingdom’s new young crown prince implements his ambitious plans.

But almost two years since the start of the reform drive, officials are grappling with crucial questions of how to save money and speed up social change without crippling the economy and clashing with one of the world’s most conservative religious establishments. Before the government declared it would lift the long-standing Saudi ban on female drivers last month, security services rounded up independent clerics and other critical figures.

Understanding the ‘Fake News’ Hysteria

The mainstream media’s hysteria over “fake news” is aimed less at the few instances of intentionally fabricated stories than at well-reported articles that challenge the U.S. government’s dubious official narratives.

For the most part, “fake news” is a fake concept designed by the corporate news media to discredit those who challenge the official U.S. hegemonic narrative. The typical MSM fake news accusation starts with some egregious fictionalization and then morphs over to the real targets: the subversives, those who would dispute foundational elements of the official history or its recent approved updates.

The real fake news is the fake narrative that flows perpetually forth from these functionaries of the MSM to dominate the discourse which the billionaire owners allow voiced via their facilities. In this manner, we are all being played, all the time, and have been since birth.

For the record, the official narrative follows certain principles. Among them are:

It is generally accurate to assume that there is an entirely reasonable interpretation of news events that contradicts what you are being told to believe by the corporate news media. Cases of official duplicity are notorious and legion: the Gulf of Tonkin, WMD in Iraq, the black kid killed by the police had a gun, etc. – by David P. Hamilton

https://consortiumnews.com/2017/10/16/understanding-the-fake-news-hysteria/

My comment: This to a large extent explains why western mainstream media “report” about the Yemen war the way they do. – And, a part of the explanation why the US policy in the case of Yemen is the way it is you can find here (following three reports, one German, two English). And in the 4. article below you find the explanation why the US (and the Saudis as well) in the way they do it:

Israel's Helpers in Media, Government, and Academia - Al-Jazeera Documentary

One month ago, I initiated here at Unz.com a discussion of the role of American Jews in the crafting of United States foreign policy. I observed that a politically powerful and well-funded cabal consisting of both Jewish individuals and organizations has been effective at engaging the U.S. in a series of wars in the Middle East and North Africa that benefit only Israel and are, in fact, damaging to actual American interests.

This misdirection of policy has not taken place because of some misguided belief that Israeli and U.S. national security interests are identical, which is a canard that is frequently floated in the mainstream media. It is instead a deliberate program that studiously misrepresents facts-on-the ground relating to Israel and its neighbors and creates casus belli involving the United States even when no threat to American vital interests exists.

America's Jews Are Driving America's Wars

So it is safe to say that much of the agitation to do something about Iran comes from Israel and from American Jews. Indeed, I would opine that most of the fury from Congress re Iran comes from the same source, with AIPAC showering our Solons on the Potomac with “fact sheets” explaining how Iran is worthy of annihilation because it has pledged to “destroy Israel,” which is both a lie and an impossibility as Tehran does not have the resources to carry out such a task. The AIPAC lies are then picked up and replayed by an obliging media, where nearly every “expert” who speaks about the Middle East on television and radio or who is interviewed for newspaper stories is Jewish.

As none of the above is likely to happen, the only alternative is for American citizens who are tired of having their country’s national security interests hijacked by a group that is in thrall to a foreign government to become more assertive about what is happening. Shine a little light into the darkness and recognize who is being diddled and by whom. Call it like it is – by Philipp Giraldi

Bombs Away: The purposeful killing of Vietnamese civilians,
Cambodian civilians, and Laotian civilians.

You do not bring the enemy to the peace table by just killing military combatants. You ultimately bring the enemy to the peace table by killing innocent civilians.

WHY?

Because, they are military targets.

The primary goal of the aggressor nation (The USA)is to break the will of the people, and its ability to defend its homeland. This strategy is as old as warfare itself.

Interactive: The Missile War in Yemen

This map shows the relative intensity of missile and missile defense-related activity across the Arabian Gulf which has occurring as part of the ongoing Yemen conflict. Beginning in June 2015, the bulk of these incidents have occurred along Yemen-Saudi border around the cities of Najran, Jizan and Abha, but Houthi acquisition of longer-range missiles have more recently permitted attacks as far as Riyadh. Saudi and UAE Patriot missile defenses have intercepted a very high percentage of these launches, greatly limiting damage.

This timeline illustrates GCC coalition intercepts of ballistic missiles launched from within Yemen since the operation began. The Saudi coalition is employing PATRIOT ballistic missile defense units to defend against these strikes. Its first intercept of a ballistic missile fired by Yemeni forces occurred in June 2015. What’s really stopping a cholera vaccination campaign in Yemen?

Politicians, aid officials, and health experts are once again mulling a cholera vaccination campaign in Yemen, but negotiations appear to be stuck on whether there’ll be enough doses available to render it effective.

Aid agencies, technical experts, and health ministries from the country’s two warring governments are once again in talks about how vaccines might help prevent cholera, particularly into 2018, when heavy rains are expected by March and experts fear a new wave of the disease.

“We don’t have any reservations over addressing the needs of the Yemeni citizen [with vaccines],” Dr Ali al-Walidi, deputy minister of public health and population for the Aden-based government of the deposed (but internationally rganizati) President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi, told IRIN.

“The ministry does not oppose rganizati a cholera vaccination campaign once [more] vaccines are available,” he added.

A high-ranking aid official involved in the cholera response, who also spoke off the record, told IRIN it was important to begin rganizati as soon as possible, even if a less than ideal amount of the vaccine is immediately to hand.

The original 3.5-million-dose request was “unrealistic” as there were only two million doses in stock globally at the time, the official said.

Any vaccination campaign would need to target the areas hit hardest by cholera – both so that the warring parties are comfortable with an equitable distribution and to ensure effectiveness.

This may be a problem – despite the trumpeting of numbers of suspected cholera cases in headlines, the data is simply not there.

Despite being on opposite sides of a long and bitter war, officials from the rival health ministries seem confident that any vaccine campaign – if it went ahead – could be done on the basis of need.

First Wave of the 2016-17 Cholera Outbreak in Hodeidah City, Yemen – ACF Experience and Lessons Learned

Although cases were reported only in 2010 and 2011, cholera is probably endemic in Yemen. In the context of a civil war, a cholera outbreak was declared in different parts of the country October 6th, 2016. This paper describes the ACF outbreak response in Hodeidah city from October 28th, 2016 to February 28th, 2017 in order to add knowledge to this large outbreak.

Methods: The ACF outbreak response in Hodeidah city included a case management component and prevention measures in the community.

Results: From October 28th, 2016 until February 28th, 2017, ACF provided care to 8,270 Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD) cases, of which 5,210 (63%) were suspected cholera cases, in the CTC and the 11 ORTCs implemented in Hodeidah city.

Conclusion: Response to the first wave of a large cholera outbreak in Hodeidah city was successful in maintaining a CFR <1% in the CTC. However, considering the actual context of Yemen and its water infrastructure, much more efforts are needed to control the current outbreak resurgence.

Yemen: Effective Humanitarian Aid Depends on a Peace Accord

UN officials and most diplomats are reluctant to call the armed conflict by its real name: "a war of aggression". The aggression of the Saudi Arabia-led coalition (Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Qatar, Sudan, and the United Arab Emirates) against Yemen began on 24 March 2015. The Saudi-led coalition is helped with arms and "intelligence" by the USA and the UK which appreciate Saudi money for arms and do not want to antagonize a large segment of the Arab world when the conflicts of Syria-Iraq-Kurds-Turkey is still "on the table."

However the aggression of the Saudi coalition is what has turned an internal Yemen struggle for power between the current and the former President of Yemen into a war with regional implications, now drawing Iran into the picture.

Intellectually, the "political solution" is clear. There needs to be an end to the Saudi bombing and a withdrawal of its coalition troops. Then, the different factions in Yemen can try to develop some sort of inclusive government.

The U.S. plays a large role in Yemen crisis

A mass blackout in the public conscious about Yemen is not coincidental, and it is due to the U.S. role in this monstrous campaign against the Yemini people.

Furthermore, U.S. and British journalists bear particular responsibility, as they have worked tirelessly to frame the war as a proxy conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and not the latest episode in a decades long U.S. military project to reshape the Middle East.

This conflict in turn has been exclusively sold and framed as an aberration of Middle East politics. The phrase “Saudi-led coalition” is used alarmingly often when an establishment media outlet discusses the bombing campaign.

Entire articles are published that don’t even mention U.S. involvement in generating this crisis. By all accounts, Saudi Arabia wants out of the conflict. The consequences of creating a basket-case failed state on its own border has no doubt shaken the country up, but the war continues.

Why did Saudi Arabia save Yemen's ex-president again?

The Saudis are increasingly desperate to find a way out of the Yemeni quagmire. They apparently believe Yemen's ex-dictator, their longtime enemy Ali Abdullah Saleh, can help.

A Russian medical team flew into Sanaa on Oct. 11 with the approval of the Saudis, who control Yemeni airspace. The Russian surgeons then performed a life-saving procedure on the 75-year-old Saleh.

On the Ground with FRONTLINE in Mosul and Yemen

Governments, including the U.S., restrict journalists’ access to the frontlines (or to countries altogether).

This is one reason why this week’s doubleheader from FRONTLINE is such important viewing. In both documentary films airing on Wednesday night, the viewer is given a rare glimpse at how two of today’s opaque wars are being fought, both with the help of the United States

In May, FRONTLINE filmmaker Martin Smith and his team became the only foreign journalists given permission to enter Yemen, where a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia is fighting Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Their film, “Inside Yemen,” is brief, but it immediately brings to life what it looks like when, as Smith describes it, “You have the region’s wealthiest country bombing the region’s poorest.”

Rights group decries media blackout in Yemen – The architecture of a genocide

If Saudi Arabia’s war has already proven to be aberrantly cruel in nature, and illegal in its execution, it is Riyadh’s ability to silence still all media that has proven most despicable.

If we bear in mind that most of our world realities need to be rganization onto our screens for society to connect with its implications, Saudi Arabia’s game of hide and seek has allowed for a genocide to be not only architected but carried out right under our noses without so much of a murmur of disapproval. What we can’t see can’t hurt us … or so the old adage goes!

In this particular case it is not so much that we have not been able to see, but rather that we were prevented. I would argue that Saudi Arabia’s guilt exists first and foremost in its ambition to engineer artificial realities so that it could carry out mass-murder and still call it political pragmatism – by Catherine Shakdam

End the Wrecking and Starving of Yemen

It has been common in Western coverage of the war to frame it as a “proxy war” between the Saudis and Iran, and also to describe it primarily in sectarian terms, but both of these are inaccurate and have been promoted by the Saudis and their Western supporters to obscure the real reasons for the conflict. Hawkish supporters of the war on Yemen have been eager to echo Saudi claims about Iranian “expansionism” because it dovetails with their other alarmist claims about Iran’s role in the region, and it somehow makes the wrecking and starving of Yemen more acceptable to our political class if it is being done for anti-Iranian reasons. Regardless, the war is indefensible, and the U.S. should have no part in it. – by Daniel Larison

Yemen and the Dirty Deals of the West

Given what we know about the methods of the Saudi-led coalition, the only proper thing to do would be to end arms sales to Saudi Arabia on a national basis and impose an international arms embargo against the country, just as there is one against the Houthi-Saleh alliance. This has been demanded by several actors, including the European Parliament last year. The principle that arms should not be sold when they may be used for war crimes is not itself controversial, rather, it is part of the arms trade regulations of most countries, as well as the European Common Position and the Arms Trade Treaty. However, these regulations are easily set aside when vital interests are at stake.

Saudi Arabia is an avid consumer on the global arms market and the simple reason for Western governments to encourage arms sales to the kingdom is that it pays off, not only in profits for big bad companies, but also in jobs for their employees.

Yemen’s Humanitarian Nightmare

The Real Roots of the Conflict

The war is not about regional interests; it is a continuation of a long-standing conflict between the Yemeni government and marginalized northern tribes, which escalated thanks to a gradual decline in the legitimacy and competence of the central government in Sanaa. And Saudi Arabia intervened not to counter Iranian expansionism but to secure its southern border against the Houthi threat [Register for reading]

My comment: “to secure its southern border against the Houthi threat”: That is taking one part of Saudi propaganda for reality, while rejecting the other. – Saudi Arabia had supported the marginalization of northern tribes in Yemen for decades; Saudi Arabia has pressed on them and enforced their Wahabisation, paying billions of dollars for this purpose, thus these tribes also turned against Saudi Arabia.

Solar panels have been a rising business in Yemen. As the government has not addressed electricity production due to the ongoing war, the people have had no option but to opt for the solar solution.
A Ministry of Electricity and Energy official told The New Arab in January that
at least 40 percent of people in Yemen today are relying on solar energy.

Not a new school year! Endless violence shutters schools, teachers unpaid for a year, threatening education for 4.5 million children in Yemen

Statement by Geert Cappelaere, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa

“More than two and a half years of renewed conflict in Yemen have once again put the education of 4.5 million children on the line, adding to the long list of bitter hardships that children have endured. Three quarters of teachers have not received their salaries in nearly a year, and the violence has forced one in ten schools across the country to close.

Mobile medical teams provide a lifeline for children in Yemen

With more than half of Yemen’s health facilities no longer functional, mobile medical teams are often the only way to reach children with lifesaving help. As of July, UNICEF and partners, like Relief International, have provided treatment to nearly 82,000 children for severe acute malnutrition this year. But as the number of people in need of assistance continues to grow, UNICEF is appealing for increased funding to reach and help the most vulnerable children in Yemen. (photos9

Amid celebrations of World Food Day Yemen calls for greater international assistance to food security and malnutrition

As countries around the globe celebrate World Food Day, millions of Yemenis continue to hope for greater international assistance to alleviate their food insecurity and malnutrition. Yemen currently suffers from the worst humanitarian crisis in the world with 17 million of its people – nearly 60 percent of the country’s population – in “crisis” or “emergency” conditions. The latest Food Security report, issued in September, stated that almost three-quarters of the Yemeni population faces starvation as food security in the country continues to worsen.

According to the report, large-scale acute food insecurity continues to worsen and the October/November harvest will most likely not offset the local food production deficits, adding that 1.25 million civil servants and their families face destitution, economic pain, and poor food purchasing power, as their salaries have been paid irregularly for the past 11 months.

UNFPA Response in Yemen: Monthly Situation Report #09 - September 2017

15 million people lacking adequate access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene, and health services; seven million people are faced with the threat of famine; further exacerbated by the largest singleyear cholera outbreak ever recorded.

The interruption of regular salary payments for one and a quarter million civil servants is a further driver of humanitarian need, particularly food insecurity, and it is affecting nearly a quarter of the population. Recent market analysis puts the average price of a food basket 30 per cent higher than pre-crisis and in some cases as much as 60 per cent higher.

Since the 15th TFPM report released in July the TFPM has observed an overall increase in the conflict-related displacement of 33,516 individuals (+1.7%).

Through the same period there has also been an overall increase in the conflict-affected return population by 10,032 individuals (+1%).

The situation for the majority of the displaced population is becoming increasing protracted. An estimated 88.5% of IDPs are now displaced for one year or more. This places a continued and a prolonged burden on hosting families and the wider community as well as on IDPs paying rent.

Saudi Arabia to vet use of Prophet's sayings to counter extremism

Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, is to monitor interpretations of the Prophet Mohammad’s teachings to prevent them being used to justify violence or terrorism, the Culture and Information Ministry has said.

In a decree, King Salman ordered the establishment of an authority to scrutinize uses of the “hadith” - accounts of the sayings, actions or habits of the Prophet that are used by preachers and jurists to support teachings and edicts on all aspects of life.

Yemenis to Americans: Your Las Vegas Massacre Is Our Everyday Life

The recent events in Las Vegas shook the entire nation, and the rest of the world has watched intently as authorities have struggled with their investigation and independent media outlets have spread uninvestigated and sensationalized narratives.

Yet one should always remember that events that shake the West from time to time regularly occur in countries across the globe — and we barely flinch.

In an interview with AlterNet, al-Sanabani discussed his personal experiences and why he believes the American people should turn their attention to his plight.

“I am a Yemeni citizen who was dreaming of a better tomorrow. I suddenly woke up in the middle of the night to watch the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. announce the start of Operation Decisive Storm, from Washington, D.C. Since then, like most Yemenis, my life has been changed by war.”

The CIA Is Playing Coy About Trump’s First Raid In Yemen

This week, we went to court to challenge the agency, filing a motionasking the court to rule that the CIA’s response is unlawful and to order the agency to produce responsive records. Glomar responses can sometimes be appropriate, but only in unusual circumstances and with a particularly strong justification for secrecy. That is because a Glomar response cuts off an agency’s FOIA responsibilities at the threshold, preempting any need for the agency to defend the secrecy of particular, identified, responsive documents.

Here, the CIA doesn’t have one.

we should not be, in any way, refueling Saudi planes. If we were—if we stop refueling these Saudi planes, it would make it much harder for Saudi Arabia to bomb civilians in Yemen. London Calls on UN to Avoid Misleading Information on Yemen

Britain’s Minister of State for the Middle East Alistair Burt called on Monday United Nations’ agencies operating in Yemen to gather all accessible information in order to avoid being misled.

In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper during his visit to Riyadh, Burt encouraged assisting those UN agencies that have a difficult mission in Yemen.

Asked about the latest UN Secretary General’s annual Children and armed conflict report (CAAC) that drove dispute for including inaccurate information, Burt said: “I believe this is an issue related to the UN. And, it is important that the UN receives all available resources as some issues might be purely disputed and therefore, certain people could offer misleading information.”

Here’s How The Russian-Saudi Rapprochement Might Affect Yemen

On the social media front, the military agreements drew criticism from those who expressed concern about how it could impact on the course of the Saudis’ disastrous War on Yemen

These specific worries are unfounded, however, because the S-400s are only for defensive purposes, while the automatic rifle factory will take at least a few years to build.

It’s in this vein that it’s relevant to reiterate Russia’s official position to the War on Yemen, because Russian Ambassador to Yemen Vladimir Dedushkin reminded the world just as recently as last March that Moscow considers Hadi to be “the country’s legitimate president”, but it’s just that Russia cautions Saudi Arabia to be more considerate of civilian casualties in its campaign to reinstate the ousted leader.

No matter how everything unfolds, the fact of the matter is that the Russian-Saudi rapprochement is proceeding at a fast pace, and that the military-political dimensions of this relationship are bound to have important implications for the War on Yemen.

Why the EU Needs to Stop Arms Sales to Saudi Arabia

Some European Union countries have decided to decline Saudi Arabia's request for military equipment and supplies amid the ongoing war on Yemen.

But for the arms embargo to succeed, all EU countries also need to follow suit, meaning they should end their industry of death and impose an embargo on all deliveries of military equipment and weapons to Saudi Arabia. Otherwise, countries like Britain, which has so far sold close to $5 billion worth of arms to the regime in this year alone, will continue to be heavily implicated in the Saudi war crimes in Yemen.

UN dubious role in Muslim world!

ALTHOUGH Muslim and Arab countries represent the largest bloc in its General Assembly with 57 members, and Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States are the biggest donors and supporters of its humanitarian programs, the United Nations plays a suspicious role in Arab and Islamic issues.
More recently, this role has been evident in Syria, Yemen, Myanmar and earlier in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chechnya, Turkestan, Palestine, and everywhere Muslim communities suffered injustice and tyranny. However, the UN has not provided any deterrence or helpful stand to defend Muslims and Arabs. In fact, it often seemed to stand with the oppressors, as with Serbia and Israel.

It seems that time has come for Arab and Muslim nations to work with US-led campaign to restructure and correct the course of this corrupt bureaucratic, aging organization.

Yemeni Militias Resort to Planting Mines Across Villages after Losing in Taiz

Militia sources in Yemen said that coup factions have stepped up their weaving of landmines into the southwestern villages near Taiz. The increase in mine-planting activity comes after suffering steep losses in the battlefield.

On the other hand, a pro-government military source belonging to the 35th Armored Brigade said that insurgency militias continued to plant mines across civilian infrastructure, such as farms, residential neighborhoods, and near water wells.

Al-Houd, Al-Sayyar, Al-Sharaf villages and the Othman Bin Affan School in Al-Houd, were among areas targeted.
