YEMEN DATA PROJECT AIR RAIDS SUMMARY FOR MAY 2019

Civilian Casualties Rise to Highest Since October 2018

Civilian casualties increase for the fifth consecutive month as air raid numbers rise for the first time since November

Civilian casualties in coalition air raids* jumped by 14% in May, reaching the highest number in a single month since last October. The number of air raids increased for the first month since November 2018, rising by 7% from April.
The Yemen Data Project recorded 149 civilian casualties in May, up from 131 in April. Civilian fatalities in Saudi/UAE-led coalition air raids increased by more than 50% from April to 41, a further 108 civilians were injured. Women and children made up 54% of civilian casualties in the month. The civilian casualty number was the highest in seven months, matching the October 2018 figure. However, the number of air raids in October was over 50% higher than May.
There were four mass civilian casualty events caused by air raids in May with almost 70% of those casualties occurring in two air raids, in the capital Sana'a and in the contested district of Qatabah in Al-Dhalie.
For the second consecutive month the capital saw the most significant single incident. 77 civilian casualties, mostly women and children, were recorded in one air raid on 16 May, hit civilian houses on Al-Raqas Street in Ma'ain district in the city. 4 children and one woman were amongst the 8 civilians killed in the bombing, a further 27 children and 16 women were injured.

Who’s Afraid of Saudi Arabia?

The Qatari blockade, now two years old, is a reminder of how impotent the government in Riyadh has become.

Though the blockade is still in place today, its advent was the low point of a struggle that has more or less existed ever since Saudi Arabia became a de facto leader in the Middle East – a role that Riyadh has tried to use to bend all other Sunni Arab nations, especially Arab Gulf nations such as Qatar, to its will. Yet it has rarely succeeded in that regard. It’s true that Saudi Arabia has cobbled together a loose alliance of nations that bolsters its power and helps to isolate Iran, its regional rival, but a cursory glance at its recent history shows that the ties that bind Riyadh to nearly every link in this chain are weak. It had to coerce Lebanon by kidnapping its prime minister. It had to save Bahrain by propping up its minority government. It had to buy the loyalties of Egypt and Sudan. Allies like the UAE are arguably more dependable, but their reliability tends to exist within the narrow parameters of countering Iran, preserving their monarchies and keeping oil revenue high.

In other words, Saudi Arabia may be a regional leader, but it’s only as strong as the coalition of allies it leads. So long as it fails to bring to heel the economically, politically and demographically congruous countries that reside in its supposed sphere of influence, it will struggle to be anything more than it is right now – a middling power – and its efforts to rise above its current station will affect the entire region. Of this there is perhaps no starker or more painful reminder than the failure of the Qatar blockade – by Cole Altom

Reckless in Riyadh

The recklessness of MBS, as he is known, has been abetted by the Trump administration, which has boasted of its special relationship with the young de facto ruler

As the de facto alliance approaches its seventy-fifth anniversary, some American policymakers and scholars are questioning whether it still makes sense for the US.

In the seventy-four years since it was conceived, the relationship between the United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has shown remarkable durability. One reason for its resilience has been the ease with which it has evolved as the partners prospered and global politics changed. Riding a tide of oil wealth, Saudi Arabia has been transformed from a congeries of seminomadic tribes into one of the twenty largest economies in the world, while US involvement in regional security grew so dominant that for decades, analysts spoke of the pax Americana in the Middle East. The relationship has also lasted in no small measure because of American leaders’ disinclination to criticize the Saudis’ domestic policies, especially their disregard for human rights.

The recklessness of MBS, as he is known, has been abetted by the Trump administration, which has boasted of its special relationship with the young de facto ruler (his father, King Salman, is in poor health, and MBS enjoys great latitude) and has avoided criticizing him for his misadventures. Yet Democratic contenders for their party’s 2020 presidential nomination are lining up to see who can Saudi-bash the loudest. The Democrats’ outrage has been further fueled by the suspicion that behind the president’s uncritical embrace of the Saudis are his hopes for personal enrichment from the relationship – by Steve Simon and Daniel Benjamin

The US Cult of Bombing and Endless War

From Syria to Yemen in the Middle East, Libya to Somalia in Africa, Afghanistan to Pakistan in South Asia, an American aerial curtain has descended across a huge swath of the planet. Its stated purpose: combatting terrorism. Its primary method: constant surveillance and bombing — and yet more bombing. Its political benefit: minimizing the number of U.S. “boots on the ground” and so American casualties in the never-ending war on terror, as well as any public outcry about Washington’s many conflicts. Its economic benefit: plenty of high-profit business for weapons makers for whom the president can now declare a national security emergency whenever he likes and so sell their warplanes and munitions to preferred dictatorships in the Middle East (no congressional approval required). Its reality for various foreign peoples: a steady diet of “Made in USA” bombs and missiles bursting here, there, and everywhere.

Think of all this as a cult of bombing on a global scale. America’s wars are increasingly waged from the air, not on the ground, a reality that makes the prospect of ending them ever more daunting. The question is: What’s driving this process?

This country’s propensity for believing that its ability to rain hellfirefrom the sky provides a winning methodology for its wars has proven to be a fantasy of our age.

Who doesn’t know the old riddle: If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? Here’s a twenty-first-century air power variant on it: If foreign children die from American bombs but no U.S. media outlets report their deaths, will anyone grieve? Far too often, the answer here in the U.S. is no and so our wars go on into an endless future of global destruction.

In reality, this country might do better to simply ground its many fighter planes, bombers, and drones. Paradoxically, instead of gaining the high ground, they are keeping us on a low road to perdition – by William J. Astore

Film by Doctors Without Borders: Endemic in Yemen, cholera still hits Yemenis hard

Between January and March 2019, suspected cholera cases sharply increased in Yemen, even before the start of the rainy season, raising fears of a large-scale outbreak. Between January and March, the number of cholera patients treated by MSF increased from 140 to 2,000 per week. Following this exponential increase, we scaled up our response in March

Although the number of cases per month in our centres has now decreased, this video report highlights the ordinary Yemenis affected by cholera in a country ravaged by war.

Film by Doctors Without Borders: War Magnifies Effects of Cholera in Yemen

Since the collapse of Yemen's health system, the disease, which is endemic in the country, has resurfaced. After outbreaks in 2016–2017, there was another spike in cholera cases between January and May this year. Over five months, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) treated more than 10,000 patients with symptoms of the disease at its health facilities in Amran, Hajjah, Sanaa, Ibb, and Taiz governorates.

Maintaining the Momentum Against Cholera

The world still has a great deal of work to do to eliminate cholera from the Global South, as the ongoing outbreak in Yemen shows. But significant progress is being made, and, in 2018, global health organizations set a new record in the delivery of oral cholera vaccines to many of the world's most vulnerable countries.

Where one lives should not determine whether one lives. But until we eliminate cholera deaths, that will be the tragic reality facing vulnerable communities across the Global South.

US Dep. of State: U.S. Demining Support Enables Access to Desperately Needed Food Aid at Yemen’s Red Sea Mills

U.S.-funded demining teams managed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and staffed by Yemeni deminers from the Yemen Executive Mine Action Center (YEMAC) deployed to the Red Sea Mills in March to begin the dangerous task of surveying the facility for explosive hazards and then clearing these hazards to facilitate safe access for the WFP. Over the next two months, 58 U.S.-funded deminers worked tirelessly to clear and destroy 1,239 explosive hazards from the Red Sea Mills including IEDs disguised as rocks and mass-produced landmines deliberately emplaced in and around the milling facilities, unexploded ordnance from recent battles, and 14 sea mines that washed ashore near the Mills (photos)

Yemeni air defenses down yet another US-made Saudi attack drone

Yemen has successfully targeted an attack drone belonging to Saudi Arabia, as the country continues to develop a deterrence against Riyadh's continued drone raids and surveillance flights over cities and civilian targets.

The Yemeni Army and Popular Committees downed the drone on Thursday afternoon in al-Jabaliyah in the country's west coast.

A source in the Air Defense unit told the al-Masirah news network that the drone was a US-made MQ-9 Reaper.

The Saudi air force launched a series of airstrikes on the wreckage of the drone to destroy it before it fell to the hands of the Yemeni fighters, the source added.

Houthi military parade in Hodeidah violates UN agreement, government says

The military parade conducted by Yemen’s Houthi rebels in the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah violates a UN-brokered peace deal, the government said on Tuesday.

The Iranian-backed rebels and government agreed, during UN-led peace talks in Sweden last December, to a ceasefire and a troop withdrawal from Hodeidah’s three ports.

But the rebels are yet to withdraw their troops and uphold their side of the deal.

“The Houthis are showcasing its members in Hodeidah with four vehicles handed by United Nations to the Houthis for demining efforts,” Yemeni Minister of Information Moaamr Al Eryani said on Twitter.

Yemen Cannot Wait for Peace to Pursue Decentralization

The future of Yemen depends upon the state’s ability to restore its legitimacy. Both the Houthis, a Zaydi Shiite revivalist movement based in northern Yemen, and President Hadi’s government have grown increasingly unpopular in the eyes of the Yemeni people due to the prolonged civil war and the resulting humanitarian crisis.

If the focus of peace efforts remains limited to securing a ceasefire between these two sides, the underlying causes of unrest, corruption, political patronage, and enflamed regionalist tensions will persist and continue. The only path forward for a united Yemen is an inclusive process that brings together all stakeholders and begins reconstructing the state along decentralized lines.

Cheap drones are changing the calculus of war in Yemen

In Yemen, civilians have grown used to the high-pitched whine of drones overhead.

This past month was no exception, with Houthi rebels repeatedly using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) against the Saudi Arabia-led coalition they are fighting.

Carrying out UAV hits on such far-off targets marked a breakthrough for the Houthis, who have no air force and achieved most of their military gains in Yemen with assault rifles, missiles, off-roaders and rocket launchers.

Justin Bronk, who wrote a report on drones in the Middle East for the Royal United Services Institute, a UK military think tank, said Houthis also use drone-mounted cameras as an “eye in the sky” so that other weapons, such as mortars, are better at hitting their marks.

For the Houthis, there is no downside to using UAVs. They expose militiamen to fewer risks than conventional attacks and, according to Yemen’s Foreign Minister Khaled al-Yamani, cost as little as $45 per drone strike.

Houthis use “quadcopter” style drones or toy aircraft like those sold on Amazon and fit them with cameras and bombs wrapped in ball bearings. They can maim and kill, said Bronk, but won’t win a war any time soon.

Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau: Water, crises and conflicts: how these interrelate and the need for action using the Middle East as an example

Water shortage is a factor in conflicts and a cause of crises

In armed conflicts, water infrastructure is a popular target of attacks in order to demonstrate and consolidate power by threatening the enemy's existence. Air strikes on water reservoirs in Yemen and Syria are good examples of how conflicts can cut off the water supply.

Serious supply bottlenecks are the result, worsening the humanitarian situation of the population.
Migration caused by conflicts also has negative repercussions on the water supply.

For the children of Taiz who have lost their parents, the holidays are a painful reminder of their former lives

“The war turned our lives into hell and things can’t get better. All the good days have gone since my parents were alive.”

Sama is one of thousands of children who have become orphans in the last four years. According to a UN commissioned report, more than 200,000 people have been killed or died of war-related disease and hunger since 2015, including thousands of civilians.

Instead of being a time of joy, the arrival of Eid al-Fitr - the holiday marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan - is a sad reminder for many Yemeni children of what they’ve lost.

Mona Mohammed - a social activist and an employee of the association al-Noor in Taiz, which assists women and children - said the number of orphans was always increasing, with their life circumstances only going from bad to worse amid war and economic difficulties.

“Organisations and associations do their best to help orphans, but every day there are new orphans and organisations cannot help them all,” Mohammed told MEE. “So we now see some orphans resorting to work in order to help their families.”

As Yemenis prepare for Eid, even celebration is a struggle

This year, families celebrate being alive and healthy as poverty, unemployment dampen spirits in war-torn Yemen.

Fawaz Fara rummaged through piles of clothes at a market in Sanaa as his wife Asma'a and six children watched. He stopped and told the vendor he could not afford anything, then led his family away.

"One [of my girls] asked me to buy toys for her. Another cried and asked why I don't buy anything," said Fara, 35. "I told them I couldn't even afford clothes. How can I afford toys?"

Yemen's Houthis and WFP dispute aid control as millions starve

A dispute over control of biometric data between the World Food Programme and Yemen’s Houthi group is straining humanitarian efforts and threatens to disrupt aid distribution in a country already on the brink of famine.

The WFP has said the Iran-aligned Houthis, who control the capital Sanaa, were hampering the rollout of a WFP biometric system to identify those in most need.

The biometric system - using iris scanning, fingerprints or facial recognition - is already used in areas controlled by Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which is backed by a Saudi-led coalition of Arab states.

Sources familiar with the discussions said Houthi leaders asked the agency to stop the registration process in early April after realizing the new system bypasses Sanaa’s supervision.

Mega Funds Pumped into Houthification of Yemen’s Health Sector

Why is UAE 'occupying' Yemen's Socotra island?

The UAE's quest for greater political and economic regional influence has taken it to the Yemeni island of Socotra

The United Arab Emirates' latest attempt to secure the Yemeni island of Socotra are evidence it is seeking to reinforce its political clout in Yemen and ultimately further afield.

Now Yemeni officials report the UAE has sent hundreds more troops to Socotra in recent weeks, largely from Aden where its militias have significant control.

The UAE is seeking greater influence in Socotra, having built a military base there, installing communications networks, and carrying out other development projects - similar to its policies elsewhere in Yemen such as Aden and Mukalla.
It has also tried to win support there by offering healthcare and work permits in Abu Dhabi to Socotri islanders, while failing to do the same for other Yemenis.

What is Sahwa, the Awakening movement under pressure in Saudi?

Scholars linked to movement are reportedly on death row, but Sahwa has not always been out of favour with the kingdom.

The Sahwa is a phenomenon which saw Muslim Brotherhood-inspired reformist movements influence Saudi society.

In its original sense, it has ceased to exist, but the Sahwa's ideas and activists remain influential.

Among the most prominent detainees are Saudi Muslim scholars Salman al-Awdah, Awad al-Qarni, and Ali al-Omari.

All three face the death penalty and, according to unconfirmed reports, may be executed after Ramadan

The Saudi al-Sahwa al-Islamiyya (Islamic Awakening), or Sahwa, was a period of powerful social and political change in Saudi Arabia between the 1960s and 1980s.

Although groups within the movement held a range of ideas, they believed in non-violence and supported an intersection between religion and politics.

While the world watches Donald Trump, it’s missing what’s really going on with US foreign policy

The human stories at the bottom of America’s military and arms supply chains are being told only to those who know where to look

Our leaders know how to bang the war drums and, by and large, we go along with them.

Meanwhile the real stories get pushed down the page – or “to the back of the book”, as we journalists used to say.

Take Donald Trump’s desire to furnish Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates with billions of dollars of extra weapons so that they can increase the ferocity of their war in Yemen against the Houthis – whose support from Iran, such as it is, prompts much of the international abuse against the Islamic Republic. French intelligence officers in Washington have apparently discovered that this is no routine request from Riyadh but a desperate appeal to Washington, because so promiscuous has been the Saudis’ use of US munitions against Houthi rebels (and civilians, hospitals, aid centres, schools and wedding parties) that they are running out of bombs, guided and unguided missiles, drone parts and other “precision” arms to be used on one of the poorest countries in the world – by Robert Fisk

An “Emergency” Arms Deal: Will Congress Acquiesce in Another Blow to Its Authority?

The emergency declaration will allow 22 arms sales to nearly a dozen countries to go forward without a period for congressional review.

Some of the proposed sales had been blocked by Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) for nearly a year

Other sales in the package bear no clear relationship to the emergency being declared about Iran.

With all of this in mind, what exactly has changed to warrant an emergency declaration for additional arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the UAE? It is not as if the Trump administration has been unable to make arms deals with the Middle East up until now.

The principal beneficiary of the emergency declaration appears to be the U.S. defense industry.

Congress is not without options in responding to this assault on its powers, however. Republican and Democratic senators are joining together to disapprove all 22 “emergency” sales proposed by the president

Can We Expect No Consequences for Killing Yemeni Children?

If the war in Yemen continues, the death toll will likely exceed the number of deaths seen in Iraq throughout the 90s. President Trump has the power to stop the war, but in a statement defending his relationship with Saudi Arabia in November 2018, much like Clinton’s response to the sanctions in 2000, he took no responsibility for the war, "The country of Iran, as an example, is responsible for a bloody proxy war against Saudi Arabia in Yemen." Blaming Iran for the war is a sad excuse.

The US government, along with the media, did an excellent job convincing the American people that September 11th was an unprovoked attack. According to their narrative, al-Qaeda hated us because of our way of life. But if we continue our war on Yemen, can we be surprised if we start to see blowback from it on US soil? Could we play the innocent victims again? The American people need to wake up and demand an end to this horrible war or we will again become the victims of our government’s recklessness in the Middle East – by Dave DeCamp

Jared Kushner dodges questions on whether Trump is racist, Saudi crown prince, despite Axios' best effort

In the teaser for Sunday's Axios on HBO, reporter Jonathan Swan pressed Jared Kushner — President Trump's son-in-law and senior White House adviser — on his "close and influential relationship" with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. After noting that bin Salman ordered the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, kidnapped Lebanon's prime minister, and "indiscriminately bombs civilians in Yemen," Swan asked Kushner, "What do you see in this guy?"

Trump presses UAE on alleged human rights abuses in Yemen

The Donald Trump administration is calling on the United Arab Emirates to allow independent monitors to probe alleged incidents of torture in detention facilities in Yemen, just months after the Pentagon insisted that it had no evidence of detainee abuse.

In a joint March report to Congress on US strategy in Yemen seen by Al-Monitor, the State and Defense departments and the US Agency for International Development said the United States had “raised serious concern with the UAE” over the alleged abuse and “urged them to conduct a thorough investigation and allow access for independent monitors.”

The Deadly Price of U.S. “Emergency” Arms Sales to Saudi Arabia

The Trump administration’s move on May 24 to authorize emergency arms sales to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan is bad news for the already grievously suffering population of Yemen.

The Trump administration has unapologetically supported the Saudi involvement in Yemen despite the staggering human toll it has inflicted on that country’s civilian population.

Suspending armament sales to Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, and their allies will send an overdue message that the Trump administration will no longer be complicit in the criminality of the Yemen conflict. Failure to do so will relegate the United States to the status of an enabler of the ongoing depredation of Yemen and the death of thousands of its civilians – by Physicians for Human Rights (PHR)

Progressives want the must-pass defense budget to tie Trump’s hands with Saudi Arabia

There’s a fight brewing to hold Trump’s unfettered alliance with Saudi Arabia in the Yemen war accountable.

Progressive lawmakers and activists are plotting their next move to hold President Donald Trump accountable over his relationship with Saudi Arabia, hoping to tie the president’s hands with the national defense funding bill.

The open question is, does the larger Congress, which only a few months ago took a historic vote to rebuke Trump’s foreign policy, still care about the war in Yemen?

Now, as the House prepares to tackle the annual national defense budget — a massive spending bill that will likely amount to more than $700 billion in military funding — progressives see an opening to force Trump’s hand in the Middle East.

Of course, there are uphill battles on all fronts. For one, Congress tying Trump’s hands on the defense funding bill would be a bold move that will undoubtedly run up against the interests of Congress’ many defense hawks

Why Nancy Pelosi Needs to Sue the Trump Administration Over the Yemen War

Peace activists are urging lawmakers to step up their efforts to end the war.

Essentially, both Obama and Trump were in violation of a federal law, and when Congress finally passed a bill to reinstate its authority over the president’s violation of this law, the president vetoed its decision. If Congress is unable to reassert its authority over war—a right granted by Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution—what measures are there to protect both the Constitution from the president and Yemeni civilians whose lives are disrupted or cut short by his senseless war?

“Her constituents and our communities are counting on [Pelosi] to make the war in Yemen a foreign policy priority,” says Hakim.

The call for Pelosi to challenge Trump’s veto through a lawsuit is also gaining momentum in the legal community.

The military crackdown in Sudan lays bare the dark heart of Bashir’s regime

Dirty deals with regional allies and militias grown too big to disband have led to this – slaughter on the streets of Khartoum

Even though it was not unexpected, it is still horrifying. To assume that the Sudanese revolution would manage to topple not only Omar al-Bashir but also uproot the deeply entrenched network of military and security interests behind him was always optimistic.

The RSF and the military’s foreign alliances with the powers of the Gulf represent another front against the Sudanese revolution.

A delegation from the Sudanese military council met with representatives of all three countries in the run-up to this week’s massacre, strongly suggesting that the plan was hatched – or at least blessed – by these allies, eager to prevent the disruption of any military support they receive from Sudan, and keen to avoid the undesirable optics of a successful civilian revolution in the region.

And so the Sudanese revolution is fighting against four governments.

Sudanese crackdown comes after talks with Egypt and Saudis

The counter-revolution said to be favoured by Arab autocrats may just have arrived

It is probably no coincidence that the sudden, violent crackdown on protesters in central Khartoum followed a series of meetings between the leaders of Sudan’s military junta and autocratic Arab regimes that are actively attempting to shape the country’s future.

Analysts say the rulers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, no friends to democratic governance, are acting in concert to thwart the aspirations of Sudan’s reform movement.

Exclusive: US intel shows Saudi Arabia escalated its missile program with help from China

The US government has obtained intelligence that Saudi Arabia has significantly escalated its ballistic missile program with the help of China, three sources with direct knowledge of the matter said, a development that threatens decades of US efforts to limit missile proliferation in the Middle East.

The Trump administration did not initially disclose its knowledge of this classified development to key members of Congress, the sources said, infuriating Democrats who discovered it outside of regular US government channels and concluded it had been deliberately left out of a series of briefings where they say it should have been presented.

The previously unreported classified intelligence indicates Saudi Arabia has expanded both its missile infrastructure and technology through recent purchases from China.

The discovery of the Saudi efforts has heightened concerns among members of Congress over a potential arms race in the Middle East

Hezbollah Isn’t Iran’s Favorite Proxy Anymore

As tensions with Washington rise, Tehran has discovered the Lebanese militia isn’t up for doing its dirty work.

Hezbollah has historically been Iran’s most effective allied militia; it has long been expected to participate in all of Iran’s wars. But domestic pressures in Lebanon have complicated such participation, and Iran is shifting its foreign policy accordingly. There are a growing number of signs that Tehran now believes the Houthi insurgents of Yemen should be their preferred regional proxy in the growing confrontation with the United States and its allies.

In the present confrontation with the West, Iran’s focus seems to be on signaling its seriousness, and raising the stakes of the conflict in ways that would give its adversaries pause. The goal is to ensure any military action is painful for Iran’s enemies but remains clearly short of war.

The Houthis, already at war with Saudi Arabia over the kingdom’s support of President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, a man the Houthis deem a Saudi puppet, serve this function well by offering Iran the greatest degree of deniability.

As previously reported, there has been a significant decrease in reported Houthi missile activity over the past five months. What a War With Iran Would Look Like

Neither Side Wants a Fight, but That Doesn’t Eliminate the Danger

The good news is that the situation is not as bad as it appears. None of the players—with the possible exception of Bolton—seem to really want a war. Iran’s military strategy is to keep tensions at a low boil and avoid a direct confrontation with the United States. Washington struck a tough public posture with its recent troop deployment, but the move was neither consequential nor terribly unusual. If the United States were truly preparing for a war, the flow of military assets into the region would be much more dramatic.

The bad news is that a war could still happen. Even if neither side wants to fight, miscalculation, missed signals, and the logic of escalation could conspire to turn even a minor clash into a regional conflagration—with devastating effects for Iran, the United States, and the Middle East.

A conflict would most likely start with a small, deniable attack by Iran on a U.S.-related target.

https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/iran/2019-06-04/what-war-iran-would-look

My comment: And this ist he point at which bias and propaganda begin. Why ever Iran should do this? Other scenarios are not even thought of. Much more probably, an unintended smaller incident , followed by a misunderstanding of the other side’s reaction, leads to a growing build up of mutual fighting, attack and counterattack, leading to a full-scale war. Another realistic scenario could be that the US misuses any attack of an alledged Iranian „proxy“ to start a greater war against Iran, or even a deliberate false-flag operation or a propaganda stroy of an Iranian „threat“ is taken as a pretense to start a war. Just think of the Vietnam war and the two wars against Iraq.

The US Wants to Bring Back the Shah of Iran

Now that the Shah is gone, the US propaganda machine and the mainstream media put out a flood of stories about how wonderful life was under the Shah. The propagandists use economic indicators of inflation, employment, gross domestic product, oil exports and the upper-class standard of living. Anybody who puts out those kinds of comparative economics deserves to flunk Economics 101.

Iran has been under sever US-imposed economic sanctions for 40 years. The US has been threatening Iran with war and “all options are on the table” for decades

The US project to destroy Iran’s economy has had a devastating impact.

Constant US, Israeli and Saudi threats require Iran to divert its domestic budget more towards defense, instead of its desired economic goals

The US uses these same dirty tricks against Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, North Korea, Russia and every other country that the US demonizes for not falling into line behind US domination in the neoliberal New World Order.

The US is still using the same gunboat diplomacy that it has been using since the 19th century to “open” Latin America, Japan, Korea, China and the Philippians to exploitation.

The real reason for economic sanctions is that the US is engaging in economic warfare against Iran. It is angry because their puppet shah was overthrown. US economic sanctions are an attempt to destroy Iran’s economy. As the most powerful and influential economic nation in the world the US can exert tremendous financial penalties, hardships and isolation on other countries. Most of the suffering from sanctions are borne by civilians.

The US is determined to undermine the government of Iran. President Trump’s violation of the JCPOA, “Iran Deal”, has put “all options on the table” again: economic sanctions, terrorism, war and even the use of nuclear weapons.

Trump says that the Iran Deal is the worst deal in history. What the US wants is the old deal that it had with Iran from 1953 to 1979. That was the “Greatest Iran Deal in History”.

Saudi Arabia and Iran after the summits of discontent

Was Riyadh able to unite Arab and Muslim leaders against Tehran?

By the end of the meetings, Saudi efforts to put diplomatic pressure on Tehran paid off, at least on paper. The final communique of the emergency Gulf and Arab summits condemned Iranian interference in Arab affairs. The closing statement of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) fell short of isolating Iran, but it did condemn recent attacks on Saudi and Emirati oil tankers and upheld their right to defend themselves.

How important is this diplomatic onslaught against Iran and how will it affect the tensions in the Gulf and Middle East regions? Here are three possible readings.

Regardless of whether Saudi Arabia's efforts behind the summits are, as argued above, successful, irrelevant or successful but irrelevant, they are wrongheaded. The Saudi obsession with Iran only deepened the Gulf crisis and gave ammunition to outside powers to interfere in the region.

Arab leaders are right to put Iran on notice and try to restrain its destabilising activities in the Arab world, but egging on Washington against Tehran is not the solution. It may, in fact, become their biggest problem.

Indeed, Saudi Arabia outsourcing its Iran problem to Washington will prove disastrous for the region.

Arab-Israeli Normalisation: A desperate attempt at isolating Iran

US-Israeli politicking, however, aims at more than normalizing the Israeli occupation among Arab countries. It also intends to change the status quo of Arab centres of political and spiritual power as well.

But the story of normalization has long preceded Trump and his administration.

Indeed, the US – which became more actively involved in the Middle East region starting with the massive military buildup preceding the Kuwait war in 1990-91 – understood that normalization between Israel and its Arab allies should top its regional priorities.

The advent of Trump, an impulsive, erratic and opportunistic president, represented the perfect opportunity for the understated Saudi-Israeli anti-Iran alliance to take shape.

At best, the Deal of the Century will allow US, Israel and Arab ruling elites to merely buy time, each for his own domestic benefit.

However, it is also likely to result in the splitting up of an Arab camp that has served as the American vanguard in the Middle East for many years. This could be the US’s greatest political gamble in the region yet.

The Arab Alliance Is a Circular Firing Squad

Two years ago, the Trump administration started a new era in Middle Eastern cooperation. It's been a disaster ever since.

At the 2017 “Arab Islamic American Summit,” the attendees discussed an ambitious joint agenda for the years ahead under Saudi leadership.

Two years later, the cooperation of Washington’s regional allies has resulted in a shambles. Several of the region’s most pressing crises can be traced directly to the Trump summit, from the blockade of Qatar, which began two years ago this week, to the explosion of Libya’s “third civil war” in April. Far from collectively achieving its goals, the Saudi-led bloc forged two years ago has mostly just set itself back—and its members are increasingly turning against each other.

Saudi summits mask Gulf divisions

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman hosted three summits last week in an impressive display of the kingdom’s convening power. The Saudis won endorsement for their isolation of the Houthis but no practical support for the war in Yemen. Their main goal, confronting Iran, was undermined by defections from their camp. The Palestinians may be the biggest winner, as the one area of agreement was support for the two-state solution and condemnation of the US administration's policy on Palestine and Jerusalem – by Bruce Riedel

The GCC and Arab League communiques were harsh to the Iranians, condemning them for supporting groups like the Houthis. But Iraq disassociated itself from the statements.
