Save the Children: Hunger crisis set to hit thousands of Yemeni children living in areas cut off from aid supplies

New analysis by Save the Children reveals tens of thousands of children are one step away from famine.

An estimated 17 000[1] children living in hard to reach areas in Yemen– cut off by war –are at increased risk of severe acute malnutrition and death if issues with aid access are not urgently resolved, Save the Children reveals today.

Currently, 75 districts in Yemen are ‘hard to reach’ according to the UN definition – areas that humanitarian actors cannot regularly access for the purpose of sustained humanitarian service delivery[2]. More than 4.4 million people live in hard to reach areas, including almost 2,2 million children. 80 percent of these areas face crippling food shortages (IPC4)[3], which is one step away from famine. By comparison, half of the accessible districts face that level of food insecurity.

A further 121 000 [4] children under five in these hard to reach areas are already moderately malnourished, and are at risk of sliding into severe malnourishment. Children in these areas are much less likely to receive life-saving goods like medicines and therapeutic foods with only 35 [5] percent of these children having received the support they needed by September 2019.

Some four and a half years after the conflict in Yemen escalated, parts of these hard to reach districts are almost entirely cut off from receiving humanitarian support. The inconsistent and delayed delivery of aid supplies has meant children in these areas are bearing the brunt of a brutal hunger crisis.

Persistent and ongoing efforts by aid agencies to provide assistance has made a difference but the raging conflict and increasing challenges with access continue to worsen the plight of families in the hardest to reach areas in Hodeidah, Hajjah, Taiz and Sa’ada Governorates. In addition to infrastructural damage to bridges, roads and health facilities, bureaucratic impediments are limiting children’s access to nutritious food, health care and clean water - services vital for their survival.

An ongoing fuel crisis in northern Yemen is further adding to the challenges of delivering supplies to health and other facilities in hard to reach areas across the country. This creates a knock on effect of higher food prices and a worsening health crisis. The decreased access to clean water raises the risk of a spike in cholera and other waterborne diseases.

According to Save the Children, without an end to the conflict across the country, it will become increasingly difficult to reach more children in many areas made inaccessible by the fighting.

Yemeni children suffer under Saudi siege

Tens of thousands of children under immediate threat by war and blockade

During five years of aggression against Yemen, the children lived a bitter life between injuries, disabilities, famine and death, physical diseases and the same deadly epidemics, violations, attacks, displacement, denial of education, in addition to direct killing by all available means.

The aggression machine has been able to claim the lives of thousands of children directly or indirectly. Also, the blockade and destroying medical infrastructure have helped to spread epidemics alarmingly. The missiles hit various parts of Yemen, destroyed hundreds of schools, making the children away from them, and destroyed homes. Many citizens took what has been lift of the schools as displaced shelters.

Everywhere

Since March 2015 to November 2019, more than 3,809 children have been killed and more than 4,035 injured. An average of five children killed a day,” Inseqam Al-Sharif, director of the Civil Bloc for Development and Freedoms told al-Thawra Newspaper.

According to al-Sharif, “the number of children and women severely malnourished is 3.2 million, approximately 7.4 million Yemeni children are in dare need of humanitarian and health assistance, and more than half of Yemen’s children do not have access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation.”

“2.1 million children under the age of five are malnourished. 400,000 are severely malnourished, including one child dies every 10 minutes. In Yemen 1.2 million married women are malnourished that have a negative impact on their health and the fetus’s health during pregnancy and after childbirth,” said Dr. Yousef Al-Hadari, spokesman for the Ministry of Health.

According to the World Health Organization, about 80,000 children under the age of five die each year in Yemen as a result of acute malnutrition.”

The aggression by destroying the infrastructure of the health sector and removing it from its scope has made Yemen a breeding ground for the spread of epidemics.

Moving the central bank to Aden, the blockade associated with the aggression and the closure of Sana’a International Airport, double the suffering of citizens and prevented 200,000 patients from travelling for treatment abroad, 30 per cent are children. 10,000 children died, according to al-Hadari.

UN And Official Figures

According to UNICEF, WHO and WFP figures, “1 million Yemeni children are at risk of being infected with diphtheria, which is spreading at a rapid rate in the country, which is also suffering from the widespread of cholera.

“More than 100,000 cases of cholera have been recorded in Yemen since the beginning of 2019, most of them are under the age of 15,” save the children said. While the number of cholera victims of children during the period of aggression in Yemen was around 1,000 and 500,000, according to official estimates.

In 2015, more than 10,000 children died of preventable diseases due to the low health system, according to previous UNICEF reports, which also indicated similar declines in the following years.

Psychiatric illness

The health tragedy of Yemeni children is not limited to the aggression, but the explosions caused by the bombing have caused psychological damage to a wide range of children.

“The United Nations has estimated that 90,000 children are suffering from psychological problems,” al-Hadari said.

A survey published in 2018, conducted on nearly 1,000 children in Sana’a alone, found that “79 percent of them showed signs of serious psychological consequences.” The study reveals that “in the first year of aggression, family members began Note the involuntary urination of children, and their refusal to be alone or do not want to leave the house, as stated in a working paper for Yemeni activists on “the suffering of children in the war on Yemen” during the seminar on (message of Yemeni children from the rubble) held in Sana’a on September 1, 2019.

Save the Children organization said it had evidence of what experts called “toxic stress,” the most serious form of stress that a child can experience, caused by strong, repeated or prolonged adversity without adequate care.

In areas that have been bombed, children face: bedwetting, nightmares, alertness, sadness, depression, anxiety, aggression, feelings of withdrawal and many other challenges, psychological indicators that experts say will weaken their ability to engage in daily life, including an inability to concentrate or perform well in School, learning new information, forming relationships and attachments, or creating a sense of security, ”said Talat al-Shargabi, a spokesman for the Ministry of Human Rights.

Displacement

Al-Shargabi told Al-Thawra: “The aggression displaced about 1.5 children from their homes to refugee camps with poor living and climatic environment. Displacement has contributed to: high malnutrition, widespread epidemics due to water scarcity and poor hygiene, many children dying as a result of cold, lack of medical camps or treatment; thousands of displaced students are denied basic and secondary education; This has negatively affected the lives of children, the rise of begging among displaced children and many of them with serious skin diseases.

Detainees Stuck Between the Darkness of Prisons and Death Coming from the Sky

Detainees and people forcibly disappeared by the conflicting parties in Yemen are subjected to different kinds of violations. In the darkness of the prisons where they languish, nothing helps them persevere except for the hope of emancipation and liberation. Then, suddenly, this hope might be taken away from them, and they find themselves in a direct confrontation with death coming from the sky, a death that they confront while their ankles are shackled and they do not have the ability to escape and survive.

This is what actually happened on the night of Saturday, August 31, 2019, at about 11:45 pm, Sana’a time, when Saudi/UAE-led coalition fighter jets dropped bombs on an Ansar Allah (Houthis) detention center at the northern end of Dhamar (south of the capital Sana’a), where approximately 170 detainees were held and crammed into a small two-story building, killing most of them. Dhamar Community College had been turned into a place of detention since 2015.

That night, the air strike killed at least 96 people, including seven children and wounded at least 40 people. Their bodies were torn to shreds that covered the whole courtyard of the Community College and their blood was mixed with the cement and stones. This horrific attack was an additional testimony to the high cost paid by Yemenis protected by international humanitarian law in this armed conflict.

The next morning, I was participating in a Mwatana mission to visit the site of the bloody attack. I inspected the destruction of the Dhamar Community College buildings that were transformed by the Ansar Allah armed group (Houthis) into a place of detention. I saw horrifying, heart-wrenching scenes, bodies shredded and scattered throughout the college yard, while the Yemen Red Crescent Society was trying hard to assemble body parts in plastic bags.

While I was trying to move through the rubble, I went behind the targeted building to see a cell that was partially destroyed, and I wish I hadn’t gone. It was a room full of torn bodies, and in one corner of the cell where the fire was set ablaze, some bodies were burned and a strong grilling smell made me dizzy. The scene immensely pained me and an inner, slow and suffocated whimper came out of me due to the horror of what I saw.

At Dhamar General Hospital, I was looking carefully at a 19-year-old survivor sitting on a bed whose face looked reassured and comforted, as though he had escaped death forever. I spoke to him and he told me: “I felt the wall of the building shake when the first rocket hit. We all gathered at the cell gate, begging them to open the door and then suddenly, I felt nothing. Later, I woke up to the sound feet and voices looking for survivors. I yelled at the top of my lungs that I am here but they couldn’t determine my location. So I told them I was stuck under somebody’s feet.”

This was not the only horrific attack. In 2015, the Dhamar Community College was hit by an air strike, along with several attacks on other detention centers launched by the coalition. On May 21st, 2015, the coalition targeted a building in Jabal Hiran in Dhamar that was used by the Houthi group as a detention center for civilians, including two journalists. On October 29th, 2016, the coalition also bombed Zaidiya prison in Al-Hudaydah governorate and on December 13th, 2017, it launched an attack on a detention center in the Military Police headquarters in Sana’a – by Ali Abdullah

The Degradation of History

Violations Committed by the Warring Parties against Yemen’s Cultural Property

Executive Summary

The targeting of cultural property and monuments is one of the areas of agreement for all warring parties in Yemen. The destruction of historical monuments and artifacts and archeological and religious buildings is the main manifestation of the country’s descent into the abyss of a war without a resolution; a war that has affected everything and has not spared the life and property of Yemenis, including their ancient past and their unifying culture. Similarly, the damages caused by the war even affected the collective memory of Yemenis that is represented by their historical heritage and unique construction style, which is evident in their imposing fortresses, castles and high towers, and their original decorations on the walls of their places of worship.

Since the outbreak of armed conflicts in the middle of 2014[34], cultural objects in Yemen have been subjected to many different types of violations and attacks. These violations have affected many historical monuments, buildings and museums and took various forms, such as aerial bombardments, shelling attacks, vandalism, destruction and damage, as well as conducting hostile acts from the vicinity of these cultural objects or using them deliberately for direct military purposes. In addition, some cultural property has been subjected to composite violations; some have been subjected to airstrikes and ground shelling, military use and even destruction and damage.

All parties to the conflict have engaged in violations and attacks on cultural property. These attacks have caused enormous damage to some of these properties and even amounted to the destruction of two religious landmarks in Taiz (Al Sudi Dome – Al Rumaymeh Dome) by an extremist group active in areas under the authorities of President Hadi’s government.

During the period covered by this report, Mwatana for Human Rights documented 15 historical and archaeological sites – some of which were being used by Ansar Allah group (Houthis) – that were directly targeted by air attacks launched by the fighter jets of the Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Among these sites are the historic town of Baraqish and the northern gateway to the old Ma’rib dam.

Frequent air attacks by coalition aircrafts have also damaged historical buildings in the old city of Sana’a. The first air strike targeting the ancient city of Sana’a, listed on the World Heritage List[35], was on June 12th, 2015, and the latest strike was on September 20th, 2016, according to the incidents documented by Mwatana in the context of this report. The airstrike of the Arab coalition fighters also took place in other historical sites, such as the famous Kawkaban fortress, which is known for its wall and its unique construction. Religious landmarks were not immune to the missiles of the coalition strikes. Al-Hadi Mosque in Sa’ada was severely damaged by two coalition air strikes on Saturday, May 9th, 2015 and Sunday, May 10th, 2015. Al-Hadi Mosque is one of the most important religious landmarks in the ancient city of Sa’ada and the most important one at a religious level. In addition, Arab Coalition fighters attacked other cultural objects, including the Military Museum in Aden on July 15th, 2015. The same museum was previously attacked by a military force affiliated with Ansar Allah group (Houthis) and its former ally, former president Saleh. They shelled the museum with artillery shells as they stormed the Crater District in mid-April 2015, before taking over it and staying inside.

On the other hand, the Ansar Allah group (Houthis) and the forces of former President Saleh launched ground attacks with tanks and artillery, targeting archaeological sites, historic buildings and museums. These attacks clearly damaged and destroyed these monuments. On March 28th, 2015, an Ansar Allah (Houthis) tank targeted the Dar al-Hajar Palace in the Al-Houta district, the capital of Lahij governorate. The attack resulted in extensive destruction of parts of the palace. More than three years ago, many ground attacks by Ansar Allah group (Houthis) and the forces of former President Saleh focused on archaeological sites in the city of Taiz, which is known for its famous historical mosques with adorned domes and high minarets. On Wednesday, June 17th, 2016, at 4:30 pm, the historical Madrassa and Mosque of Al-Ashrafiya were subjected to sudden artillery bombardment by the Ansar Allah group (Houthis). The shelling targeted the eastern minaret of the mosque and resulted in a large gap in the center. The Ansar Allah group (the Houthis) has the highest rate in terms of using cultural objects for military purposes and carrying out hostile acts, starting with some historic fortresses and archaeological sites. On August 16th, 2014, the group’s fighters took control of the ancient city of Baraqish and used it for purely military purposes. Prior to their withdrawal, in early April 2016, they planted land mines on the borders of the archaeological city.

Other cultural properties were destroyed and vandalized by militant groups. On Friday, November 20th, 2015, a car bomb attack on the southwestern outskirts of the historic city of Shibam-Hadhramaut, caused minor and severe damages to around 240 houses, built of rammed earth[36].

In Aden, members of the Ansar al-Sharia group attacked the historical Hindu temple. They came aboard three military vehicles, stormed the temple, and destroyed the statues and paintings that it contained. The churches of the city of Aden were also affected, with many of their statues and icons destroyed by the Ansar Allah group (Houthis). More than 15 archaeological and historical sites and landmarks in the city were also affected, either by being used directly for military purposes, for carrying out military operations inside these sites or from areas adjacent to them or for refuge.

Eastern Africa to Yemen: One of the most dangerous migrant routes

Tens of thousands of people migrate from Eastern Africa to Yemen each year – even though the country has been devastated by a civil war, and smugglers frequently blackmail and torture migrants. Most migrants are hoping to make it to Saudi Arabia, and find work there. Let’s take a closer look at this highly dangerous migrant route.

Crossing the ocean in small boats

To make it from Eastern Africa into Yemen, migrants have to cross the ocean. They are often sent out in small, crowded boats that are ill-equipped for the journey by traffickers. In January of this year, at least 52 people died off the shore of Djibouti, according to IOM. The migrants in the picture made it to the shores of Yemen. They arrived on the shores of Ras al-Ara in the Lahj region in late July of this year.

Robbed of their freedom

After enduring hours crammed on a wooden smuggling boats, migrants are often loaded into trucks by traffickers and driven to compounds in the desert. Nearly every migrant who lands in the coastal village of Ras al-Ara -- a migrant hotspot in Yemen -- is robbed of their freedom by traffickers, unable to continue their journey.

Imprisoned, families blackmailed

The migrants are imprisoned in hidden compounds, called “hush,” while their families are blackmailed into paying for their release. Yemeni authorities do little to stop these criminal activities, according to reports by AP. Most migrants are subjected to daily torments -- beatings, torture, starvation,... -- while many women and girls are raped by their captors.

Horrifying torture

This 17-year-old Ethopian migrant was tortured so brutally that he lost his leg. After Abdul-Rahman landed in Ras al-Ara, traffickers locked him up and asked for phone numbers of people who could transfer money for their release. He told his captors he didn't have a number, because he knew that couldn't ask his father for more money. He was beaten and left without food or water for days, weeks even. One night, one of the captors beat his leg to a pulp with a steel rod. Then, he was dumped in the desert. A passing driver brought him to a hospital, where his leg was amputated. (photos)

Tomgram: William Hartung, Trumping the Arms Market

Honestly, if a single corporate entity controlled three-quarters of the global market in a product, you’d call it a monopoly, right? Well, in 2011, that was the situation of the United States when it came to the arms trade. This country sold more than three-quarters of the weapons on the global arms market (a significant proportion of them into the already violent Middle East). And that should still be stunning. But I’d bet top dollars that, while you could read about it then, that remarkable fact wasn’t a front-page story. It wasn’t, in fact, much of a story at all. In the intervening years, as the arms trade has grown back to near Cold War levels, especially in the Middle East, the U.S. has solidified its position as the planet’s major arms salesman, sending weaponry to at least 98 countries. In 2018, for instance, 54% of the weaponry going into the Middle Eastern arms market was ours and yet while this information is available, in a world where the cheers, boos, and chants that now greet any public appearance by Donald Trump are a top news story, America’s role in the global weapons trade is, at best, an afterthought. (It matters little that, in polls, 70% of Americans oppose our selling arms to any other country at all as a danger to the world.)

Don’t you consider it just a tad strange that the media of the nation that -- no matter the president in these years -- continues to flood the world with weaponry of just about every imaginable sort, pays remarkably little attention to that fact? – by Tom Engelhardt

America’s Arms Sales Addiction

The 50-Year History of U.S. Dominance of the Middle Eastern Arms Trade

All the American arms sales to the Middle East have had a severe and lasting set of consequences in the region in, as a start, the brutal Saudi/United Arab Emirates war in Yemen, which has killed thousands of civilians via air strikes using U.S. weaponry and pushed millions of Yemenis to the brink of famine. And don’t forget the recent Turkish invasion of Syria in which both the Turkish forces and the Kurdish-led militias they attacked relied heavily on U.S.-supplied weaponry.

Donald Trump has made it abundantly clear that he cares far more about making deals for that weaponry than who uses any of it against whom. It’s important to note, however, that, historically speaking, he’s been anything but unique in his obsession with promoting such weapons exports (though he is uniquely loud about doing so).

The U.S. government’s stated rationales for pouring arms into that ever-more-embattled region include: building partnerships with countries theoretically willing to fight alongside U.S. forces in a crisis; swapping arms for access to military bases in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and other Persian Gulf states; creating “stability” by building up allied militaries to be stronger than those of potential adversaries like Iran; and generating revenue for U.S. weapons contractors, as well as jobs for American workers. Of course, such sales have indeed benefited those contractors and secured access to bases in the region, but when it comes to promoting stability and security, historically it’s been another story entirely.

The Nixon Doctrine and the Initial Surge in Mideast Arms Sales

Washington’s role as the Middle East’s top arms supplier has its roots in remarks made by Richard Nixon half a century ago on the island of Guam.

The core of what came to be known as the Nixon Doctrine was the arming of regional surrogates, countries with sympathetic rulers or governments that could promote U.S. interests without major contingents of the American military being on hand. Of such potential surrogates at that moment, the most important was the Shah of Iran

In the Nixon years, Saudi Arabia, too, became a major weapons client of Washington, not so much because it feared its regional neighbors then, but because it had seemingly limitless oil funds to subsidize U.S. weapons makers at a time when the Pentagon budget was beginning to be reduced. In addition, Saudi sales helped recoup some of the revenue streaming out of the U.S. to pay for higher energy prices exacted by the newly formed OPEC oil cartel. It was a process then quaintly known as “recycling petrodollars.”

The Carter Years and the Quest for Restraint

The freewheeling arms trade of the Nixon years eventually prompted a backlash. In 1976, for the first (and last) time, a presidential candidate -- Jimmy Carter -- made reining in the arms trade a central theme of his 1976 campaign for the White House. He called for imposing greater human-rights scrutiny on arms exports, reducing the total volume of arms transfers, and initiating talks with the Soviet Union on curbing sales to regions of tension like the Middle East.

Who Armed Saddam Hussein?

While the volume of those arms sales didn’t spike dramatically under President Ronald Reagan, his determination to weaponize anti-communist “freedom fighters” from Afghanistan to Nicaragua sparked the Iran-Contra scandal.

Worse yet, the Reagan administration transferred arms and provided training to extremist mujahedeen factions in Afghanistan,

The Addiction Continues

Donald Trump has carried on the practice of offering weaponry in quantity to allies in the Middle East, especially the Saudis, though his major rationale for the deals is to generate domestic jobs and revenues for the major weapons contractors. In fact, investing money and effort in almost anything else, from infrastructure to renewable energy technologies, would produce more jobs in the U.S. No matter though, the beat just goes on.

One notable development of the Trump years has been a revived Congressional interest in curbing weapons sales, with a particular focus on ending support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen.

Such deals with Saudi Arabia and other Mideast states may be hugely popular with the companies that profit from the trade, but the vast majority of Americans oppose runaway arms trading on the sensible grounds that it makes the world less safe. The question now is: Will Congress play a greater role in attempting to block such weapons deals with the Saudis and human-rights abusers or will America’s weapons-sales addiction and its monopoly position in the Middle Eastern arms trade simply continue, setting the stage for future disasters of every sort? – by William D. Hartung

[Sanaa gov.] Health Minister: 100,000 Yemeni Children Die Annually Due to Aggression, Diseases, Epidemics

Minister of Public Health and Population, Dr. Taha Al-Mutawakel, confirmed that 100,000 children die every year due to aggression, diseases and epidemics, including malnutrition and lack of medicines to save them due to the blockade.

He pointed out that the aggression and the continuation of the siege and targeting infrastructure have killed childhood in Yemen by depriving them of health and life rights.

The Desolation Of Yemen

The Jerusalem Post reports on the worsening humanitarian crisis in Yemen

Whatever the reason, the Yemen conflict, now being called the “forgotten war,” is in danger of becoming even more forgotten when it comes to the human cost.

The war on Yemen has been “forgotten” more times than I can count. It has been common to describe the war and humanitarian crisis this way, because it suggests that the problem is simply outside neglect rather than complicity in causing the disaster. Unfortunately, the U.S. government and other Western governments have not ignored or forgotten Yemen. On the contrary, they have paid it the worst kind of attention possible by providing arms and support to the Saudi coalition’s interminable military campaign. Yemen would be much better off if the Saudi coalition’s arms suppliers and patrons had forgotten all about it, but the opposite has been true.

The widespread starvation and spread of preventable disease should make Yemen’s humanitarian crisis one of the world’s top stories every week, but except for a couple brief surges in interest over the last few years virtually no one writes about what is happening to the people of Yemen. It almost never shows up in television reports, and it is a surprise when it comes up in our political debates.

Millions of people are starving thanks to policies supported by our government, and the man-made famine that is unfolding barely registers here.

The U.S. has been involved in helping to wreck and starve Yemen, and it is incumbent on our government to do what it can to stop causing more harm and to help repair the damage that our policy has caused – by Daniel Larison

WHO: 70,000 people killed, injured in Yemen’s civil war

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Tuesday that nearly 70,000 men, women and children in Yemen have lost their lives or been seriously injured as a result of the conflict there.

The organisation noted in its report that as many as 156 attacks have been documented on health facilities and health-care workers during the war, without specifying who perpetrated the attacks.

The report said 76,137 suspected cases of cholera had been reported since the beginning of the year to the end of October, including 991 deaths as a result of the disease, while there have been a total of 25,242 dengue cases, including 104 deaths related to the disease.

The organisation noted that only 50 per cent of the health facilities are operating in Yemen amid a severe shortage of medicines, equipment and staff.

The report revealed that there are 35,000 cancer patients in Yemen, ten per cent of them are children, in addition to 7,000 patients with kidney failure who need weekly dialysis sessions.

The WHO’s figures are far less than those issued by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data database project which in early November revealed that 100,000 people had been killed in the Yemen unrest, including over 12,000 civilians killed in “direct attacks”.

My remark: These 70,000 (a very low estimate) are just the victims of war, fighting, shelling, air raids. The total figure of all those who had died due to the consequences of war and blockade will be 230,000 to the end of the year.

Shooting instead of school: the stolen childhood of children in Yemen

Going to school: an act of resistance in a war-torn country like Yemen, where children are made into soldiers. Two million children are prevented from going to school: many prefer to join militias. Laura Silvia Battaglia, a war reporter, was in Brussels to raise awareness about this emergency.

In addition to that, the war has increased a wide-spread habit among poor families. "Many families decide to sell their children for about $ 1,000 to people who then employ them in drug trafficking to Saudi Arabia," she says.

Caught in fights, starved to death, and sexually abused, in Yemen children are among the main victims, a fact this activist denounces as the world marks 30 years on from the signing of the Children’s rights convention.

Al-Houthi Reveals Corruption of US-Saudi Aggression and its Mercenaries

In 2014 and prior budgets, salaries and state expenditures were covered by 91.5% of oil and gas revenues and approximately 8.5% of salaries from local revenues, member of the Supreme Political Council Mohammad Ali Al-Houthi said.

According to Saba News Agency, Al-Houthi pointed out that oil and gas revenues in 2014 amounted to seven billion dollars according to a recent World Bank report, other than domestic revenues and the grant of King Abdullah, however, the Consensus Government claimed that it can not spend Salaries.

"During the years of aggression, oil and gas were at the disposal of the US-Saudi-Emirati occupation and their mercenaries,” he said, “The amount of revenue lost due to the aggression was 12 trillion riyals. This was explained by the Leader of the Revolution on the anniversary of the Prophet's birthday."

He pointed out that the aggression is occupying all areas around commercial imports from Hodeidah to the port of Aden.

Al-Houthi explained that any grants or loans are received to mercenaries through the Central Bank of Aden branch, in addition to printing trillion and 700 billion riyals, which led to the rise of the dollar against the riyal as the dollar reached a maximum of 800 riyals What doubled the suffering of citizens.

"A $ 2 billion deposit was taken according to their statement (the Consensus Government)," he said. "While we refused any loans, it was settled by them and they announced the start of liquidation of the credits."

Yemen's Houthis release captured South Korean, Saudi vessels

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement released three vessels and 16 people it had seized, South Korea’s foreign ministry and a Houthi military source in Yemen said on Wednesday.

The seizure on Sunday was the latest incident at sea around Yemen, where Saudi Arabia is leading a Western-backed coalition of Arab states against the Houthis, who control the capital and most population centers and have been accused of attacking shipping.

Of the vessels freed on Tuesday, two were South Korean and one was Saudi Arabia-flagged, the South Korean foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that the families of two South Koreans among the crew had been notified.

“The three ships were released after the necessary legal measures,” the Houthi military source in Yemen told Reuters, adding that all crew were also released.

On Twitter, Hussein al-Azzi, the Houthi deputy foreign minister, said the release resulted from friendly ties between Seoul and Sanaa.

A Houthi investigation found the ships had entered Yemeni waters due to bad weather, he added. Earlier, the Houthi coast guard had said the vessels entered Yemeni waters without permission.

South Korea Sends Navy to Area Houthis Took Ships

South Korea said it had sent navy ships to a region of the Red Sea where Yemeni Houthi rebels seized two of its vessels and one from Saudi Arabia with a total 16 crew.

Each of the South Korean boats taken captive late on Sunday -- a tug and a sand dredger -- had one South Korean and two other nationals on board, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. A Saudi tug with 10 people on board was also seized, it said. The ships were taken around 9:50 p.m. Sunday Yemeni time.

South Korea deployed its Cheonghae naval unit from around Oman to the area of the incident. “We plan to respond flexibly to the situation,” said Kim In-chul, a Foreign Ministry spokesman.

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry is working for the release of the two Koreans, it said in the statement, without providing the nationalities of the other 14 people. Both South Korean vessels were owned by builder Woongjin Development Co., it said. Al Arabiya news channel reported earlier on Monday that one of the seized ships was a drilling rig.

South Korea’s 302-personnel Cheonghae unit includes the destroyer Dae Jo-yeong, an anti-submarine helicopter and three speed boats, according to the latest annual defense white paper. It’s been stationed in the Gulf of Aden since 2009 for anti-piracy operations and has also been utilized in recent years to help evacuate South Korea citizens from Libya and Yemen.

Yemen's Houthis say they will release seized ships if Korean

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement said on Tuesday it would release vessels it had captured if they prove to be South Korean, after it seized a rig being towed by a Saudi tugboat in the southern Red Sea.

The dredger and the Korean tugboat were owned by South Korean builder Woongjin Development, a company official told Reuters.

Refinitiv ship tracking data shows the Saudi tug, the Rabigh 3, had recorded its destination as Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Its current signal status was “restricted manoeuvrability”. Its registered owner is Saudi Arabia’s petrochemicals company PetroRabigh.

The Houthi coast guard, part of the movement’s interior ministry, said in a statement three vessels had been seized near Uqban island, including one belong to Saudi Arabia, and taken to the Yemeni port of Salif. The statement said the vessels had been in Yemeni territorial waters without approval.

Humanitarian situation in Yemen’s ‘forgotten war’ worsens

Just a few months ago, the media was filled with alarm bells that the humanitarian disaster in war-torn Yemen was getting worse. The warnings have mostly disappeared, which might lead some to think the situation has improved.

Nothing could be farther from the truth.

“There is nothing that shows any improvement,” Hisham Al-Omeisy, an independent Yemeni political analyst, told The Media Line. “The only thing that is visible in the media is that there is less coverage.”

Perhaps this is due to conflict fatigue or because the protests in places like Lebanon and Iraq have become the topic du jour. Whatever the reason, the Yemen conflict, now being called the “forgotten war,” is in danger of becoming even more forgotten when it comes to the human cost.

Olivia Headon, Yemen spokeswoman for the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM), says that conditions for 3.6 million people displaced by the conflict have worsened in the past half year because of the weather.

“We have had really heavy rain, which has caused people who are already displaced by conflict to be displaced by floods,” Headon said. “This is still the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.”

According to UNICEF, as of October 2019, 80 percent of the people of Yemen require some form of foreign assistance. Close to 20% of the population relies on aid to get a bare minimum of healthcare services.

Statistics show that only about half of the country’s medical centers are currently in operation – and they often lack the resources to provide the necessary treatment. This in part led to the 2017 cholera epidemic, the worst ever recorded.

In 2019, almost 16 million Yemenis are suffering from hunger.

Yemeni National Diabetes Center Launches Distress Call to Save 30,000 Cases

The National Diabetes Center (NDC) on Tuesday launched a distress call to save 30,000 registered cases, as a result of lack of resources and scarcity of drugs due to aggression and siege. Director of the Center, Dr. Zayed Atef, called the International Diabetes Federation for emergency doses of insulin for diabetics, especially children.

He pointed out that the center receives 100 cases of diabetics, and faces great pressure due to lack of possibilities and scarcity of medicines. He explained that the closure of the Sana'a International Airport is causing the suffering of thousands of patients.

Atif said that "the International Diabetes Federation responded and sent emergency doses to Salalah Airport in the Sultanate of Oman, but these doses did not reach to date." He also pointed out that the International Diabetes Federation asked the center ship the emergency doses by land but due to need for specific conditions, receiving these doses should only be done through the airport in Sana'a.

On the other hand, the adviser of the National Center for Diabetes, Dr. Adel Al-Hadhrami, said that "if insulin does not arrive at a certain temperature and if it is not preserved, it will be damaged. If it is taken by the patient, his/her condition will get worst and become at risk of death."

30 Years of Child Rights Yet Yemen Remains One of the Worst Places to be a Child- UNICEF

Despite historic gains made for children since the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) was adopted 30 years ago by the United Nations General Assembly, Yemen remains one of the worst places to be a child.

A Continuing brutal conflict and a subsequent economic crisis have left basic social services systems across the country on the brink of collapse with far reaching consequences on children. Today, over 12 million-nearly every child- in Yemen is in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

“Those who bear the responsibility, including the Yemeni authorities have fallen short of their promises and commitments to the children”, said Sara Beysolow Nyanti, UNICEF Yemen Representative. “The 30th anniversary of the convention should serve as a stark reminder to all of us to urgently recommit to our accountabilities to help the children of Yemen to survive and grow in a safe and peaceful environment”.

Too many children have been killed by the war in blatant attacks. Children have been killed while playing outdoors with their friends, on their way to or from school or in the security of their homes with their families.

Antibiotic resistance: Why bacteria love war-wounds

“A war wound has an enormous potential for bacterial infection,” says Dr Jorgen Stassijns, who is coordinating MSF’s efforts to get a grip on the problem of antibiotic resistance. “A bullet or a piece of shrapnel rips the skin apart and rips the flesh open, allowing bacteria to get in, while if you step on a landmine, lots of dirt will be blown into the fresh wound immediately. The risk of an infection is huge.”

Take Waleed, a patient in MSF’s reconstructive surgery hospital in Amman, Jordan. In 2016, he was walking down the street in the Yemeni town of Ibb when an aircraft opened fire at the building next to him. A wall collapsed, severely injuring his jaw and leg.

The impact of a bullet, an explosion or a collapsing wall on the human body can be major. It can cause significant internal damage, often requiring surgery to put it right. Complex bone fractures, for instance, may require multiple surgical interventions, increasing the risk of a bone becoming infected – if it was not already infected when the body was first injured.

Today, Waleed has still not recovered fully. This is not because of the damage inflicted by the collapsing wall, but because his wounds were infected by bacteria that became resistant to the very drugs that were supposed to heal him.

In times of war, health systems often break down, making it difficult for patients to get proper treatment, as happened to Waleed in war-torn Yemen.

Yemeni military resistance waged on shoestring budget

Total cost of 5 years of defence costed but a quarter of Saleh's three-month 1994 war

Director of the Presidency Office, Ahmed Hamed has on Wednesday revealed the war expenses of the conflict with the Saudi-led coalition and the UAE.

“The war expenses did not exceed a quarter of the budget of the 1994 summer war, which amounted to 20 billion dollars, ” Ahmed Hamed confirmed.

“In the 1994 war, the budget was $20 billion in 3 months, as well as the budget approved by the Ministry of Defense, which are allocated to salaries and operating expenses, while we are fighting wars without a military budget,” he said at the inauguration of Public Service and Receiving Complaints at the Ministry of Local Administration.

“We assure you that after five years we have not reached a quarter of this amount, coming from the aid of our people and from the crumbs that come to us from the rest of the revenues,” he added.

“The forces of aggression and mercenaries continue to plunder the wealth of the Yemeni people, plundering billions, or even trillions of dollars during the five years of aggression,” he said.

Yemen: Houthis militants impose donation collection in commercial shops

The Houthis installed last week donation boxes in commercial shops in the capital Sana’a with no prior permission from shop owners or managers, merchants in Sana’a said.

The merchants said that the Houthis gunmen brought donation boxes four days ago and installed them in shops by force.

In Yemen and other Arab and Muslim countries, donation boxes are often placed in shops and commercial centers for fund raising to social, political or even military purposes.

The Houthis say that collected money from donation boxes go to the benefit of “killed fighters’ families

The SAM organisation calls for the rescue of sick abductees

In a report entitled "Slow Death", the organization highlighted abuses against sick detainees in Houthi prisons The organization condemned cases of "medical negligence" and "deliberate abuse" of civilians arbitrarily held in Houthi prisons. "Their negligence exposes them to a double violation, affects their mental and physical health, and increases the suffering of their families" it said.

The Yemeni human rights organisation has obtained information about the presence of unofficial Houthi prisons in areas controlled by the Houthis. The organisation claims that the lives of prinsoners at Houthi prisons aree at risk because they are denied the right to treatment and in certain cases disease is deliberately left unchecked as a form of torture. .

SAM quoted the Association of Mothers of Abductees as saying there are at least 183 abductees with serious medical conditions and diseases in Houthi prisons.

SAM published the names of 43 abductees in Houthi prisons with several diseases.

The organisation has pointed out that the inattention to prisoners’ medical conditions in Houthi prisons can be described as slow death sentences, as prisoners are detained without medical attention and left to suffer through their, in some cases, fatal illnesses..

According to the organization many of the detainees got these diseases in prison as a result of torture and/or poor health conditions.

SAM noted that the detainees' health conditions and medical suffering have compounded the psychological suffering of their families and have brought additional financial costs to them.

Clashes between Houthi and tribes in Amran due to forceful reconciliation attempt

Local sheikhs in Amran told Almasdar online that clashes broke out between Houthis and the Sufian tribes on Monday evening, after the latter attempted to force a reconciliation through Houthi mediation not signed off on by all the tribes of "Dhu Mohammed.”

The sources said that Houthi mediators, including the Houthi leader Abu Ali Al-Hakim and Amer al-Marrani, appointed by the Houthis as governor of Al-Jawf, intervened to ease the tension between the tribes of Dhu Mohammed of Al-Jawf governorate and the Sufian tribes of Amran governorate, who’ve been feuding for years. .

According to sources, the Houthi mediation and reconciliation delegation attempted to force a solution in favor of Sufian tribe, given that the majority of the Sufian tribes fight with the Houthis.

The tribe of Dhu Zaid , one of the tribes of Dhu Mohammed refused to sign the reconciliation attempt promoted by the Houthis. In response, the Sufian tribes mobilized their resources and deployed them to the disputed areas in support of the Houthis’ forced reconciliation attempts. This then caused the Dhu Zaid tribe to respond violently.

The clashes were reportedly ongoing as of this morning.

Al-Hassani added that “the Southern Transitional Council’s militias still control all of Hadi’s forces [former] camps and state institutions, which indicates their rejection of the Riyadh Agreement.”

Infighting now in Hadi’s forces as well

Islah militants and presidential brigade in violent clashes

Military sources revealed that armed clashes that took place on Wednesday in one of Hadi’s forces camps in Laudar city, northeast of Abyan province in southern Yemen, causing a violent explosion.

The explosion occurred within the forces of the Third Presidential Protection Brigade of Hadi’s forces in Akkad Mountain, as a result of clashes between a military force coming from the coastal area of Shoqra, and the Brigade.

The sources added that the attackers were members of the Islah Party who tried to loot the brigade’s weapons to reinforce their military positions in Modiyah and Shoqra cities.

While infighting between pro-Hadi forces and Emirati-backed separatists is common occurrence, the clashes in Laudar are unique in that they were a round of infighting between two Saudi-backed units that both support Hadi.

Attempt to thwart mother of abductees vigil outside Ma'ashik palace unsuccessful

A local source and eyewitnesses told Almasdar Online that elements in the STC security belt tried to break up a vigil held by the mothers of the abductees and detainees on Tuesday. This is not the first campaign of the sort from the association, and the fate of abductees in southern Yemen remains an issue that has not been widely approached. The vigil was not disrupted by the incursion and the association continued their vigil, near the outer gate of the presidential palace area in the Crater neighborhood of Aden city.

The source said that elements of the STC security belt forces, supported by the UAE, were dispatched amongst the crowd of women. The forces’ intended purpose was to disperse and thwarting the protest, but the women insisted on completing the demonstration and raised banners demanding the government and the coalition intervene to release their children, most of whom were arrested without any charges..

The women shouted against the STC security belt forces and soldiers who tried to disperse the vigil, which came 24 hours after prime minister Dr. Maeen Abdel Malek and several members of his government returned to Aden in accordance with the Riyadh agreement.

The commander of the so-called Counter-terrorism Force in the occupied province of Aden Yusran al-Maqtari, who is being backed by the United Arab Emirates, has mocked the Saudi-led coalition and the UN Security Council’s anti-terrorism work in Aden.

Saudi Arabian authorities have reportedly prevented six ministers of Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi’s government from returning to the port city of Aden for the implementation of the so-called Riyadh Agreement reached between the Saudi-backed Yemeni government and the Southern Transitional Council (STC) earlier this month.

Saudi Arabia’s Paradigm Shift In Dealing With Yemen’s Houthis

Saudi Arabia has lately adopted a fresh policy on dealing with Yemen’s Houthi group.

The Saudis are interested in rapprochement with the Houthis especially in the wake of the Houthi September attack on oil giant Aramco, and the inability of the Saudis’ sophisticated defense system.

The Saudi-led Arab coalition’s original plan to wipe out Houthi influence in Yemen. However, Anwar Gargash, minister of foreign affairs of UAE, a leading member of the Arab coalition fighting the Houthis in Yemen recently pointed out that the Houthis will have a role in Yemen’s future.

Concerning rapprochement

The Houthis are seemingly not yet prepared to put their weapons down, retreat from some locations, or make substantial concessions to the U.N.-recognized Saudi-backed Yemeni government. But the group may acquiesce to stop sending missiles to Saudi territories as long as Saudi Arabia discontinues airstrikes on Yemen and allows reopening Sanaa International Airport.

The internationally recognized Yemeni government has opposed the recent Saudi-Houthi behind-the-scene talks. The government deems any direct Saudi-Houthi dialogue as a gain for the Houthi movement and a disregard for the government legitimacy.

At the same time, since the conflict began ion 2015, the Yemeni government has failed to find a political or military solution and the ensuing humanitarian crisis has complicated this quagmire.

The bottom line is that any Saudi-Houthi talks will intend to address the tactical concerns of both sides, but it will not necessarily mean lead to a wider peace in Yemen – by Khalid Al-Karimi

Can a Young Saudi Prince End the War in Yemen?

Khalid bin Salman is working full time to extricate Saudi Arabia from the disastrous conflict begun by his brother. Some regional and U.S. officials are cautiously optimistic.

Four and a half years ago, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman led a military coalition against a Houthi insurgency in Yemen, drawing Saudi Arabia into the most disastrous war in its modern history. Now, he is looking to his little brother, Khalid bin Salman, to get him out of it.

Last week, Khalid bin Salman traveled to Muscat, Oman, for a meeting with Omani Sultan Qaboos bin Said to prepare the groundwork for high-level talks with the Iranian-backed Houthis, who seized control of Yemen’s presidential palace in January 2015, forcing the Saudi-backed president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, to flee the capital of Sanaa. The meeting marks the culmination of more than three years of highly discreet, mostly secret direct talks between Saudi and Houthi officials.

https://www.alsahwa-yemen.net/en/p-34386

My comment: Hadi’s „three references” date back to 2013715 and would install his regime forever. They are the most serious political blockade for any peaceful solution.

Will Turkey succeed in facilitating mediation in Yemen?

As a Yemeni journalist, the ongoing war in Yemen was over my head when it came to thinking about how mediation could end or at least help reduce the conflict in a country that is experiencing the most severe humanitarian crisis in the world today. In the first attempt, my memory brought up Yemen's bad experience with mediation during the last two decades.

In fact, Qatar, the U.N., the EU, the U.S. and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have all failed multiple times to mediate in several conflicts in Yemen since 2004.

What is next?

Yes, Yemenis should not wait for a military stalemate to start mediation efforts; they should not cry over spilled milk but open new doors and make more efforts for peaceful resolutions.

There is a severe need to coordinate mediation efforts with the growing number of international and regional organizations, civil society groups and other Yemeni people who are not directly involved in the conflict, and this is where Turkey can do more solid work to solve the conflict in Yemen.

At the very beginning of 2019, Çavuşoğlu gave a clear message about Yemen: "Finding a solution to the Yemen issue will be one of Turkey's priorities in 2019." I think the time has come for Turkey to take a firm step toward finding a solution for the crisis in Yemen.

Turkey's mediation efforts in Yemen should be in the form of non-military and voluntary actions. At the local level in Yemen, Turkey has the chance to start plans that aim to raise awareness of the crucial need for a peaceful resolution, build the capacity of the next-generation mediators, and support and host programs for Yemeni peace seekers. Such actions will build an important base for more concrete results in the near future.

Despite the fact that Turkey announced its support for the Saudi operation in Yemen only a few days after the intervention began in March 2015, Ankara has condemned its actions in the last three years and began to cooperate with Riyadh's enemy Iran, the Houthis main supporter. Rather than take such approaches, Turkey still has the chance to and should play a mediation role between Saudi Arabia and Iran, the main regional actors of the war in Yemen.

From 2017: The Unseen Middle Eastern Cold War

The rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran is seen as a cold war because of the similarities of foreign policy with each other just like what was seen between Russia and The United States during their cold war. An example is how western European countries and The United States created NATO to contain communism in eastern Europe and prevent The Soviet Union from invading western Europe and spreading their influence, this is similar to the creation of The Gulf Cooperation Council. The GCC was created so it can be a political, economic, and military union for the Persian Gulf countries. The GCC was created in 1981 and was founded byBahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, who are all countries ruled by a monarchy.

Just like the members of NATO, these middle eastern allies wanted to unite and protect their interests and preserve their power, especially since many Arab monarch states were overthrown over the years like Egypt, Yemen, and Iran.

The GCC was created right after The Islamic Revolution and during The Iran-Iraq War. With this two events occurring after the founding of the new Iranian republic, these Gulf countries decided to work together and form The GCC to prevent Iran from influencing Shia Muslims to being disobedient to their Sunni governments and influencing their citizens into having revolutions to overthrow the monarchies.

Therefore, The GCC formed during the Iran-Iraq War because they saw Iran as a threat to their security and needed to form an alliance with each other so in case if Iran ever tried to invade or attack a GCC member, Iran will be practically declaring war with all GCC members and the GCC members will watch out for each other. These gulf countries feared that Iran will be a threat to their power and will try to establish Shia governments in the area so they can be the dominant faith in the region and would change the way of life in the middle east and will become the ruling country – by Jonathan Coelho

Just look how little time it took until the US and its allies had recognized the coupist regime in Bolivia. And in Venezuela, the US and many of its allies even had recognized the want-to-be-coupist self-proclaimed “president” Guaido even when he never was able to overthrow the legitimate government.

Diriyah: The original home of the Saudi state

The history of Diriyah is rich in heroic epics, a deep-rooted past that has deep roots in history, a cradle from which the Saudi state was launched, and the brightness that spread its light to cover the Arabian Peninsula.
Diriyah is a beacon of the royal family's continued legacy and a symbol of the unity of the Saudis, as well as its historic role in establishing stability and bringing prosperity to the nation.
Diriyah was established on the banks of Wadi Hanifa in 850 AH / 1446 AD, when Mani al-Muridi, the grandfather of the ruling family, came to the region, laying the first building block for the establishment of the state. This city became an important transit point for Hajj and trade convoys, and an important center of stability. At that time, political conditions were not good in the Arabian Peninsula. It was suffering from neglect, disintegration, rivalry and widespread ignorance and illiteracy.
In 1157 AH / 1744 AD, the Emirate of Diriyah was taken over by Imam Muhammad bin Saud, who had a good administrative sense and a future outlook, and he began to change, announcing the establishment of the first Saudi state, to begin a new phase in the history of the entire Arabian Peninsula, where he laid the building block of the great unity, which united most of its parts. A unity that the Arabian Peninsula and all Arabs did not know for centuries, and this unity became a source of pride for all Arabs and Muslims, and as a result of this unity, the city of Diriyah has become the capital of a sprawling state, and a source of economic, social, intellectual and cultural attraction.

Shrunken Aramco Listing Could Crimp Saudi Crown Prince’s Bigger Plans

By failing to attract major international investors, Mohammed bin Salman may have to kiss his Saudi Vision 2030 goodbye.

Over the weekend, Saudi Arabia finally announced the terms of its hugely anticipated stock market listing of the most profitable company in the world, the oil giant Saudi Aramco. But the final price and size of the Aramco listing will be less than what Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman long hoped for—and promised. On Sunday and Monday, Saudi officials canceled “roadshows”—pitch meetings with prospective investors—in Asia, Europe, and the United States. In the end, the vaunted coming-out party of Saudi Arabia’s crown jewel will be a local affair, with the shares sold almost exclusively to Saudi nationals and investment funds in Saudi Arabia, the Middle East, and countries like Russia and China.

That points toward a tough future for Mohammed bin Salman’s ambitious plans to wean the Saudi economy off oil—the basis for his Saudi Vision 2030 announced in 2016—and entice foreign investors to pour hundreds of billions of dollars into the kingdom.

Why the apparent about-face on courting international investors? The whole point of the listing, in addition to raising cash, was to juice international investment to fund Saudi Vision 2030.

There are all sorts of reasons for big international investors to be leery of snapping up shares in Aramco—above and beyond the lingering reputational taint of doing business in Saudi Arabia after the gruesome killing of the Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October 2018.

First and foremost, there’s the valuation itself.

So what does this star-crossed listing say about Saudi Arabia and its ambitious plans for economic transformation?

Nothing encouraging. Saudi Arabia hoped to use the windfall to kick-start new economic projects, such as tourism. And while the listing could still bring in about $25 billion, that’s a far cry from what Mohammed bin Salman hoped for—or what he extracted from rich Saudis in his so-called anti-corruption drive between 2017 and 2019, in which he collected more than $100 billion.

To make Saudi Vision 2030 a reality, the crown prince needs to convince international investors, not just Saudis, to put money into the kingdom. But foreign investment in Saudi Arabia still hasn’t recovered to the levels it had just a few years ago—and is nowhere near attracting the kind of capital it needs if it is to transform a one-dimensional, oil-driven economy into a truly diversified one. And the lack of investor appetite for Aramco, which is incredibly profitable, highlights a broader lack of interest in pouring money into Saudi Arabia.

Mohammed bin Salman “needs the money desperately,” said Sen of Energy Aspects. “I would say, and this is my take, this listing is much more about revenue generation.” – by Keith Johnson

Democrats Should Debate Arms Policy, Not Just Impeachment

It is easy to forget that four of the six vetoes issued by President Trump this year have dealt explicitly with the war in Yemen or the provision of weapons to the Saudi-led coalition fighting there. The President’s refusal to consider suspending arms sales to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after the brutal murder of Jamal Khashoggi, and growing awareness that U.S. weapons have been misused in the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, has galvanized long-standing bipartisan concern about our relationship with Riyadh.

According to research on candidate positions compiled by the Forum on the Arms Trade, most of the Democrats who will be on the stage Wednesday have explicitly called for cutting off at least some arms transfers to the Saudis. Still unclear is how Joe Biden would adjust arms policy with Saudi Arabia. The Obama administration made record-breaking arms deals with the Saudis.

The smaller instruments of war, in particular military-style assault weapons, have been famously discussed at past debates, but primarily within the domestic context.

All the Democratic candidates at the Wednesday debate, however, do support an assault weapons ban. They have the opportunity to make the connection between rejecting the weapons domestically and not making it easier to export them around the globe.

Finally, the candidates should weigh in on how they would approach the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).

The candidates should take the opportunity to clarify their positions on critical arms trade issues and highlight where that differs with the President — and the event’s moderators to press them on the topic.

From allegations of foreigners in demonstrations to claims of outside forces being involved, Iran’s government has been blaming everyone else for the violence unleashed after it raised the minimum price for gasoline by 50%.

Those claims have been amplified by state-controlled TV and radio channels, the only broadcasters allowed, after interference on illegal but widely tolerated satellite dishes has grown worse and the internet has been blocked since Saturday.

Iran’s military expeditionary capabilities are ‘limited’ but it’s heeding valuable lessons learned

Iran has shown its ability to deploy forces and air assets beyond its borders in support of allies across the Middle East in the wake of civil wars that have destabilized the region, according to a defense intelligence report on Iran’s military capabilities.

The report titled “Iran Military Power” was produced by the Defense Intelligence Agency and released on Tuesday.

The report described Iran’s ability to flex its forces beyond its borders as “limited” but Iran is heeding lessons learned from conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Yemen where its forces are combating ISIS militants and propping up proxy forces in the region.

Iran has also conducted “limited out-of-area naval operations as far as China, South Africa, and the Mediterranean Sea,” according to the report.

Iran’s ability to rapidly move expeditionary forces and conduct combined operations across the large swath of the Middle East threatens U.S. forces in the region and bolsters Iran’s desire to showcase itself as the regional dominant power while stymieing American interests.

“It has shown itself capable of sending small groups of conventional forces — including ground forces, military airlift, and UAV operators — into permissive allied countries to support larger operations,” the report reads.

Amnesty says over 106 dead in protests, which Iran disputes

Days of protests over rising fuel prices and a subsequent government crackdown have killed at least 106 people across Iran, Amnesty International said Tuesday, adding that the real figure may be much higher.

Iran’s government has not released a toll of those arrested, injured or killed in the protests that began Friday and spread quickly across at least 100 cities and towns. But it disputed Amnesty’s report through its mission to the United Nations, calling it “baseless allegations and fabricated figures.”

However, a U.N. agency earlier said it feared the unrest may have killed “a significant number of people.” Amnesty cited “credible reports” for its tally and said it “believes that the real death toll may be much higher, with some reports suggesting as many as 200 have been killed.”

Zarif calls U.S. claim of support for Iranians ‘shameful lie’

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Monday that the United States’ claims of support for the Iranian people is a “shameful lie”.

The Peace Manifesto: What would an anti-war and pro-peace government look like?

This election could have massive ramifications around the world.

Except for Brexit positioning, most of the early coverage of this election has focused on personalities rather than policies. But with manifestos due to be published in the days ahead, we’ll start to get a more detailed picture of parties’ priorities.

So, what should an anti-war and pro-peace government prioritise?

Curbing arms sales and support for human rights abusers

For decades, successive UK governments have offered an uncritical political and military support for the Saudi Arabian regime. This has been characterised by photo-ops, cosy relations and multi-billion-pound arms deals.

Since 2015, UK-made weapons have played a central role in the brutal Saudi-led bombardment of Yemen. Since the war began, the government has licensed £5.3 billion worth of fighter jets, missiles and bombs. It’s been a big payday for arms dealers, but the impact on Yemen has been devastating. 100,000 people have been killed in the war, which has created the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.

Real security over military aggression

2013 saw the government losing a vote on foreign intervention for the first time since 1782. The party-political differences in attitudes to interventionism have only increased further since then, with Labour, SNP and Greens taking increasingly anti-war positions.

Shifting production from arms to renewables

The UN has warned that there are only 11 years to prevent irreversible damage from climate change, and whoever wins next month could be in power for almost half of that time.

Time for change

There are only three weeks to go, and a lot will happen between now and then. This election could have international ramifications for years to come – by Andrew Smith, CAAT

UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia doubled since Yemen war

Government data showed that London licensed £5.3mn worth of arms sales to Riyadh from March 2015 until March 2019, amounting to almost a 50 percent increase since Yemen war.

The UK government has since 2015 doubled the value of arms sales to Saudi Arabia, which has been involved in a five-year bombing campaign in neighbouring Yemen.

Government data showed that London licensed £5.3 million worth of arms sales to Riyadh from March 2015 until March 2019, amounting to almost a 50 percent increase on the value of arms licenses, which stood at £3.8 million prior to the Yemen conflict.

In reality, the figures are likely to be a great deal higher, according to the Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT), which said on Monday that most sales of missiles are licensed via "opaque and secretive" Open Licence system.

Andrew Smith, spokesman at CAAT said: "This war would not be possible without the complicity and support of arms dealing governments like the UK and US, who have pulled out all stops to maximise arms sales irrespective of the human cost."

The UK-based campaigning organisation urged London to re-think its relationship with the Saudi kingdom, which has been accused by numerous international rights organisations of human rights violations.

Is a resolution of the GCC crisis imminent?

The September 14 attack on Aramco has forced Saudi Arabia to revise its policies towards the region and the GCC.

Signs of de-escalation have recently started to appear in the Gulf, suggesting that after more than two and a half years, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) could finally be moving towards a resolution.

Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain, which have imposed a blockade on Qatar since June 2017, officially announced they will participate in the Arabian Gulf Cup football tournament to take place in Doha later this month.

"This football decision is a very political decision," commented Abdulkhaleq Abdullah, a political science professor known to be close to decision-making circles in Abu Dhabi. "It is preparation for bigger things," he added.

Furthermore, a senior Saudi official told reporters that Qatar is taking "encouraging positive steps" to mend relations with its neighbours.

In recent weeks, confrontational social media campaigns on both sides have also been toned down as a confidence-building measure to create a more favourable environment for talks between the parties.

All of this came on the back of Qatari Prime Minister Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani's visit to Saudi Arabia to attend the emergency GCC summit in Mecca in the aftermath of the attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman. It was the highest-level visit by a Qatari official to the kingdom since the siege began.

These de-escalatory steps are not happening in a vacuum and are related to regional factors, including the war in Yemen, tension with Iran and the Trump administration's policies towards the Middle East.

While there have been several developments that have affected the situation in the region and made it more conducive to renewed dialogue, it seems the September 14 drone attacks on the Saudi Aramco oil processing facilities have had a significant effect on Riyadh. They mark a turning point in Saudi foreign policy on many levels, including the GCC crisis.

The impact of the attack on Aramco was much bigger than the financial losses the company incurred as a result of the damage to its facilities and the temporary reduction of daily oil output.

Regardless of where the drones came from - Yemen, Iraq or Iran - the fact that they were able to reach Aramco's facilities represents the biggest American failure in the Gulf since Donald Trump came to power – by Ibrahim Fraihat

Saudi Arabia Resorts to US, Britain and France on Facing Drones Danger

Commanders of European, US and French air forces are considering new methods and technologies that will protect Saudi Arabia from drones threat.

Heading an armed forces delegation from the Kingdom to the 9th Dubai International Air Chiefs Conference and the Dubai Airshow 2019, commander of the Royal Saudi Air Force Maj. Gen. Tough times for Yemen honey trade as war drags on

Beekeepers say clashes between the Saudi-supported government and Iran-backed rebels, alongside a humanitarian crisis that the United Nations has called the world's worst, have throttled their livelihoods.

"When we recently arrived in this part of Hajjah province on the front line between the aggressors (the Saudi-led coalition) and the Huthis, the trucks were hit by an air strike," Manea told AFP.

"One was carrying the honey, and the other was carrying the bees," he added as he used his bare hands to remove a honeycomb frame crawling with bees from a hive in the rural region of Aslam.

Yemen is renowned for its Sidr honey, named after the tree from which the nectar is gathered. The honey is referred to informally as "Middle Eastern manuka", a bow to its famed market rival from New Zealand.

Manea's fellow beekeeper, Ali Kabsh, agreed that the business was suffering badly.

"Honey production has dropped," he said pointing to the challenges of exporting during wartime and the logistical difficulties of keeping bees

Al-Kamal: 4.5 million children deprived from education over Houthi coup

[Hadi gov.] Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Ibtihaj al-Kamal has said that 4.5 million children have left schools and were deprived from education since Houthi militia’s coup on September 2014 and because of shelling schools and transferring them into military barracks and recruiting children as soldiers by the militia.

Talking to Saba on World Children’s Day marking November 20, the minister al-Kamal made it clear that Houthi rebel militia practiced the worst violations against children in Yemen, deprived them from all services ensured by international laws and principles and dragged them into war fronts.

She pointed out that 2 million children out of 3 million born during the war suffer health problems and big number of them died due to deterioration of health care and not receiving necessary vaccinations in Houthi –held areas.

The militia recruited 12,341 children to the warfront, caused the displacement of 43,608 others and still holds 456 kidnaped children in its captivity.”

International Campaign to Ban Landmines, Cluster Munition Coalition: Landmine Monitor 2019

Preface

Landmines and Explosive Remnants of War

Peace agreements may be signed and hostilities may cease, but landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) are an enduring legacy of conflict.

Antipersonnel mines are munitions designed to explode from the presence, proximity, or contact of a person. This includes improvised landmines, also known as improvised explosive devices (IEDs), with those same victim-activated characteristics. Antivehicle mines are munitions designed to explode from the presence, proximity, or contact of a vehicle as opposed to a person. Landmines are victim-activated and indiscriminate; whoever triggers the mine, whether a child or a soldier, becomes its victim. Mines emplaced during a conflict against enemy forces can still kill or injure civilians decades later.

About this report

This is the 21st annual Landmine Monitor report. It is the sister publication to the Cluster Munition Monitor report, first published in November 2010. Landmine Monitor 2019 provides a global overview of the landmine situation. Chapters on developments in specific countries and other areas are available in online Country Profiles at www.the-monitor.org/cp.

Landmine Monitorcovers mine ban policy, use, production, trade, and stockpiling, and also includes information on contamination, clearance, casualties, victim assistance, and support for mine action. As well as a twenty-year review, this report focuses on calendar year 2018, with information included up to November 2019 when possible.

Yemen

Houthi forces in Yemen used antipersonnel and antivehicle mines during 2018 and 2019, primarily on the west coast of the country near the port of Hodeida. Houthi forces are also reported to have used landmines in the past along the coast, along the border with Saudi Arabia, around key towns, along roads, and to cover retreats.

A Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen convened by the UN Human Rights Council reported in September 2019, “The use of landmines, both anti-personnel and anti-vehicle, by the Houthis has resulted in significant harm to civilians.” According to the report, the group […]

In April 2019, Human Rights Watch reported that Houthi-planted landmines had killed at least 140 civilians since 2018.44 In November 2018, employees at the Hodeidah port accused Houthi forces of placing landmines in the area around the port’s entrances.45 Previously, the Yemen Mine Action Center (YEMAC) reported that Houthi forces laid more than 300,000 landmines between 2016 and 2018.46 International media reported that mine clearance teams funded by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) cleared and destroyed hundreds of Houthilaid mines in 2018.

There is no evidence to suggest that members of the Saudi Arabia-led coalition have used landmines in Yemen.

With Last Dance of the Dead, Yemeni artist paints message for France

Three dangling bodies painted against a blood red background shocked passersby in central Paris on Tuesday after a Yemeni artist unveiled a mural to denounce French arms’ sales to the Saudi-led coalition fighting in his homeland.

The three-metre (10 ft) high mural entitled “Last Dance of the Dead” was created by Murad Subay. He started painting when the conflict in his country broke out in 2014 to raise awareness on arbitrary arrests before taking his brush to the bombed out rubble in the capital Sana’a.

“This is inspired from real stories of people who died in the war and I am trying to convey how war has affected the people,” Subay, who fled to France 18 months ago and is part of the Artist Protection Fund (APF), which provides relief and safe-haven to artists at risk. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-yemen-security-art/with-last-dance-of-the-dead-yemeni-artist-paints-message-for-france-idUSKBN1XT1RO?rpc=401&
