Yemeni minister: Emirates takes Islah pretext for secret plots

Minister of State at the Yemeni internationally-recognized government on Tuesday accused the United Arab Emirates of taking the Islah Party (Muslim Brotherhood offshoot) as a pretext to implement private plots in the war-torn country.
"If you're against Islah, remove the party's flag from Socotra, but not Yemen's flag that you've replaced with yours," Gen Abdul Ghani Jameel, also Hadi-appointed mayor of Sana'a City, tweeted addressing the UAE.

What did the Yemeni press write today?

The central bank has informed the government it won't be able to pay the salary of June 2020 to public servants after the STC separatists looted the bank's money twice this month. Yemen Voice website reported this story learning from "official sources."

Yemeni MP Mufadhal al-Abbarah told Yemen's flagship TV channel: The parliament has failed to issue a statement condemning the capture of Socotra by the STC. We have found that the pro-UAE bloc in the Yemeni parliament is the largest.

The ministers of state, legal affairs, industry and foreign affairs have resigned over the capture of Socotra by UAE-backed separatists. Several media outlets reported the story.

Fighting intensifies in Yemeni province despite truce

Yemeni government forces and southern separatists traded mortar and cannon fire in the southern province of Abyan on Tuesday, despite a truce and diplomatic talks in Saudi Arabia, local officials said.

Separatists said the government launched an offensive on their forces in the Al-Taryia region in Abyan, which triggered heavy clashes and resulted in deaths on both sides.

“They launched a big offensive from Shouqra, hours after agreeing to the truce. We are committed to the truce and implementing the Riyadh Agreement as long as the government abides by it,” Nizar Haytham, a spokesperson for the Southern Transitional Council (STC), told Arab News.

He added that STC forces acted in self-defense and that a Saudi-led committee had been formed to monitor the truce.

Government forces accused separatists of attacking their positions with artillery and heavy machine guns and said they only acted in response.

“Fighting has not stopped for even one hour since the truce was announced,” an army officer, who asked to remain anonymous, told Arab News from Abyan.

The medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres said on Tuesday that its Aden hospital treated more than 20 people who were injured in the fighting.

Yemeni army, separatists clash despite cease-fire

On Monday, Saudi-led coalition announced ceasefire between Yemeni govt, STC forces

A new round of clashes erupted between government forces and the separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC) in Yemen's southern Abyan province on Tuesday, according to a Yemeni military source.

The violence came hours after the Saudi-led coalition said the Yemeni government and STC, which is backed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), agreed to maintain a cease-fire in the southern island of Socotra.

The military source said government forces launched attacks on STC sites east of Zinjibar, the provincial capital of Abyan.

He said dozens of STC fighters were killed and injured in the attacks, but without giving an exact toll.

Socotra falls to secessionists

Its fall under the control of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), the political front of the southern secessionists, at the weekend puts vital areas of South Yemen out of the hands of the legitimate government.

In a statement, the STC congratulated “the people of the Socotra Archipelago on the return of Socotra and its capital Hadiboh to normalcy and the restoration of its proper position as a civil capital and a mecca of coexistence, harmony and the cohesion of the social fabric.”

STC presidency member Salem Thabet said that “we control the Special Forces Camp, the last stronghold of the Muslim Brotherhood militias in Hadiboh, and all the weapons and military equipment of the Brotherhood militias.” He added that the southern forces “have declared a general amnesty and the beginning of self-rule in Socotra.”

The STC sacked Ramzi Mahrous, the governor of the Archipelago, who decried the acts of the “secessionist militias,” saying that “over the past weeks, the militias have attacked the camps and institutions of the state and stormed into Hadiboh on Friday morning.”

“We, and the people of Socotra, expected to be supported, but we were met with silence and disappointment,” he added.

The Saudi-led Arab Coalition that is supporting the legitimate government in Yemen did not refer to the operations in Socotra and released no comment on developments on the island.

Many observers at the time opined that the legitimate government had no real weight on the ground and that it depended primarily on certain southerners and Al-Islah elements.

The government has the loyalty of a number of Yemeni army officers, the majority of whom are loyal to the regime of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh who was overthrown during the 2011 Revolution in Yemen. Saleh then allied with his former foes, the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, and died at their hands after disagreements.

“We are not fighting against the legitimate government or the president, despite our reservations about them. We are fighting against the Muslim Brotherhood,” Naguib Seddik, a former Press Syndicate head in Aden, told Al-Ahram Weekly.

“The southerners are Sufis targeted by the Muslim Brotherhood,” he added.

The majority of Yemenis are Zaidis, the closest Shia denomination to the Sunnis, and the rest are Shafiis, said Haitham Abu Zeif, a researcher on Islamic heritage.

Seddik believes the southern secessionists want to see reconciliation with the legitimate government, “but not at any cost” since it is important that this takes place under a “republican” banner.

Seddik said the republican alliance should not comprise the Muslim Brotherhood and the Houthis because they are “terrorist forces.”

“It is not logical or politically sound to resist Houthi extremism with Brotherhood extremism. They both belong in one camp,” he said.

The weakness of the legitimate government is complicating domestic affairs in Yemen, making stability and peace less likely due to multiple forces on the ground including the legitimate government, the Al-Islah Party, the southern secessionists, the remnants of the General People’s Congress and the Houthis.

“It will be difficult for all these forces to accept to meet to resolve the crisis. Everyone rejects everyone else, and the regional powers backing each will not allow reconciliation at the expense of their allies,” Seddik said

Yemen government and southern separatists agree to ceasefire, talks in Saudi Arabia

Yemen’s government and southern separatist forces have agreed a cease-fire and will begin talks in Saudi Arabia on implementing a peace deal, the Kingdom’s ambassador to Yemen said Monday.
The Arab Coalition fighting to restore the internationally recognized Yemeni government welcomed the move.
Both sides accepted a truce in Abyan province, a de-escalation of tensions in other regions, and the start of talks on implementing an agreement reached in November to end fighting, ambassador Mohammed Al-Jaber said.
“The Kingdom and coalition states have made continuous efforts since signing the Riyadh Agreement for its implementation and that faced many challenges that hindered and derailed it,” Al-Jaber said.

The Arab Coalition said it denounced the recent tensions and called on all parties to uphold the national interests of the country.
The alliance also called for a “halt to bloodshed, by adhering to the Riyadh Agreement and returning the conditions on the island of Socotra back to normal, a cease-fire in Abyan governorate, and avoid escalation in all Yemeni governorates.”

“In light of the recent events in Socotra and Abyan, the coalition welcomes the response of the legitimate Yemeni government and the STC for its request of a comprehensive cease-fire, de-escalation, and a meeting to be convened in the Kingdom to move forward in implementing the Riyadh Agreement,” coalition spokesman, Col. Turki Al-Maliki said.
Al-Maliki said the coalition rejects any practices that harm the “security, stability and volatility of the Riyadh Agreement.”

UAE-backed STC in Yemen ‘secret friends’ with Israel

According to an article in Israel Today, the UAE-backed Yemeni separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC) are “secret friends” with Israel and that a new state in the Middle East had been declared behind closed doors, referring to the STC-held territory which includes the interim capital of Aden and more recently the seizure of the Socotra island from the Saudi-backed Yemeni government.

The piece, which suggests the Port of Aden “casts a friendly eye on the Jewish state”, cites a recent press conference held by the STC which expressed a positive attitude towards Israel, although the issue of diplomatic relations are yet to be discussed.

Hani Bin Briek, the vice-chairman of the STC, tweeted that “relations between Israel and Qatar are very good” and also recounted former Israeli President Shimon Peres’ visit to Doha and current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent visit to Oman. “Arabs and Israelis agree on a two-state solution, and Arab countries normalizing relations with Israel.”

The stance on normalising ties with Israel follows current trends among Gulf states, including the STC’s patron, the UAE.

The report also states that many Israelis reacted positively and welcomed the developments of a “new autonomous state in Yemen”, with sources telling Israel Today that Tel Aviv has been conducting secret meetings with the STC.

The strategically located Yemeni island of Socotra has once again become a major focal point for the battles for territorial control between the Saudi-backed ‘Yemeni government’ nominally headed by Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who has been based in Riyadh for most of the last four years, and the Southern Transition Council, which is strongly supported by the UAE.

The most recent outbreak of disputes between Saudi-backed forces and the UAE-backed Southern Transition Council (STC) for control over strategic areas in Yemen has once again spread to Socotra Island, where the opposing forces are fighting for control over the main city on the island.

The UAE has been committed to a controversial military build-up of Socotra Island since 2018, when it began deploying armoured vehicles and troops there. Then in May of 2019 Yemeni officials reported that the UAE had sent reinforcements consisting of hundreds more troops to Socotra, mostly from Aden where the Southern Transition Council had recently wrested control from the Saudi-backed forces of Mansour Hadi.

It appears that the UAE is attempting to secure control over Socotra with the STC providing the façade of a Yemeni-based armed movement, as it proceeded to build a military base there, attempted to secure control over the port, installed communications networks, and has been carrying out other development projects – as it has done elsewhere in Yemen in areas controlled by the STC, such as Aden and Mukalla.

Strategic control over Socotra Island would fortify the transport corridors for its oil exports as well as between the UAE and India, with whom it has important trade links, as well as to its military bases on the Horn of Africa, adjacent to Yemen and Socotra Island, located in the port town of Assab in Eritrea and Puntland and Somaliland regions in Somalia.

Film: Yemen: UAE-backed separatists take control of Socotra

UAE-backed southern separatists in Yemen seize control of the strategic Socotra island from the Saudi Arabian-backed government.

Yemen's UAE-backed southern separatists have seized full control of the island of Socotra.

The Southern Transitional Council (STC) says it has also deposed the governor of the island.

But Yemen's Saudi-backed government is calling it a coup.

It is the latest move from the separatist group which wants to see a sovereign state in southern Yemen.

Yemeni legitimacy backers .. Saudis hand Socotra to STC

The Yemeni internationally-recognized government seems to be in a real dilemma with repeated critical statements, absolute objections and appeals about acts by the Southern Transitional Council (STC) in southern provinces. These areas are apparently held by the UAE-backed STC, but in reality Abu Dhabi and Riyadh share the control there and are dragging the helpless government troops to bloodshed.
In its rhetorical statement, the Yemeni government appeared as if it was strayed and heading for an abyss after being lured to it by Saudi Arabia, whose help had been asked by a government expelled from two capitals within five years.

Despite the Yemeni government's warnings in its statement, the STC has kept taking control of other sovereign sites, the last of which was the local authority office of Socotra governorate on Friday.

Friday events in Yemen's largest island have triggered anger reactions from many Yemeni analysts and activists supporting the UN-recognized government.
"According to my reliable sources in Socotra, Saudi troops have not only paved the way for the STC's forces to raid Hadibo, but also given them the opportunity and ability to attack the government army from sites they [Saudi troops] handed to UAE subordinates," says Ahmed al-Shalafi, a Yemeni journalist working for Al-Jazeera.
Leading a coalition in support of Yemen's official government since 2015, Saudi Arabia handed Socotra archipelago to the UAE-backed STC, a Yemeni political analyst tweeted.
Those, "who want to know the real face of the elder sister [Saudi Arabia], need to watch what is happening in Socotra," Dr. Kamal al-Ba'adani added. "While they came in order to support legitimacy – as they claim – more than 1,000 fully-equipped Saudi troops side with Emirati militias with the purpose of taking control of the island.
"Rebels against the legitimacy in Socotra receive their salaries in Saudi rials and via Saudi channels," he quoted one of the island's tribal sheikhs as saying.
Once the "Emirati militias" got prepared for "raiding the provincial capital, the Saudi troops withdrew from their positions and disappeared."
Saudi media is greatly influenced by UAE, Dr. Ba'adani said, noting that Okadh paper echoes what the Emirati al-Etihad paper reports on developments in Yemen.
For another Yemeni analyst, the Yemeni legitimate government is to blame for Socotra overthrow.

UAE-backed separatists launch massive crackdown in Socotra

Hundreds of people arrested and deported across the island archipelago

Southern Transitional Council (STC) militias in eastern Yemen have begun a new regional campaign, as Abu Dhabi prepares to deploy Sudanese mercenary troops on Socotra island.

This comes just two days after the Saudi-UAE alliance handed over the island to the STC.

Local sources said that the STC militias carried out a campaign of arrests and deportation of hundreds of people from both the southern and northern provinces, adding that most of the deportees came from Abyan, Shabwah and Mahrah provinces.

The STC has also carried out raids on the homes of Hadi government officials, where they arrested leaders, most notably the commander of the island’s air force, Colonel Abdul Rahman al-Zafani.

The sources confirmed that the move comes in the context of reprisals carried out by STC militias, which includes campaigns of abuse and pursuit of their opponents.

Sources on the Island also reported that the UAE has begun arrangements to establish a new camp in Hadiboh city, the capital of the province, in conjunction with Abu Dhabi’s notification to the STC’s command about the arrival of Sudanese troops on the island.

The coalition is seeking to turn the island at the intersection of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden into a military base.

Yemeni FM: Riyadh pact not excuse for STC mutiny

The Riyadh Agreement will not be a pretext for the Southern Transitional Council (STC) to persist its mutiny in south Yemen, the Yemeni foreign minister tweeted on Saturday.

If it keeps on without deterrence, "this mutiny will end every hope of applying the Riyadh Agreement that was essentially stricken to put an end" to the rebellion, he warned.

UN chief urges pressure to bring Yemen’s parties to talks

The U.N. chief called for more pressure to be applied to Yemen’s warring parties to come together to arrange a cease-fire in the war that has cost more than 10,000 lives and displaced 2 million people in the world’s worst humanitarian disaster.

Guterres said the United Nations has been working to bring the parties together and has been promoting “confidence-building measures, namely in relation to the use of the airport, the harbors, the payment of salaries and at the same time the beginning of a political process.”

Towards a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in Yemen.

June 21, 2020 There is no longer a need for a Yemeni direct and immediate Yemeni dialogue to discuss the fate of the country. Things have become clearer now, and instead of writing the documents of partition in the shadow of the war with our own hands, we all have to pack our bags and go to the United Nations to discuss a permanent, just and comprehensive peace for Yemen for all Yemen, and the form of coexistence acceptable to all parties.

The war exhausted and crushed the Yemeni citizen, did not achieve one of its goals, and Yemen destroyed a country, a society and an identity, and parts of it were handed over to Iran, other parts of intolerance, and misguided wars, and life stopped, and hunger and disease struck us and the political, sectarian and territorial ignorance of us was lost, sovereignty lost, and taken from us

The epidemic has taken it, claimed lives, sowed fear and panic in our souls, and tomorrow we will wake up to a massive devastation, to infinite its impact. The war exhausted all parties, including the Arab coalition, which stood with the truth and with the legitimacy, and tried to restore the state, so it exhausted its material and moral capabilities, and was not spared from conspiracy. The international community was unable to find a way to implement its decisions, so the time has come for us Yemenis to experience direct dialogue and the path of peace under Arab patronage and Arab support, a dialogue for free men who are willing to give up everything for Yemen.

Let each of us come relaxed from all conditions except the two conditions for preserving the republic and unity, a federal unit that achieves stability and justice, and we accept it for our country and represent the minimum of the great interests of the country, and a permanent and irreversible partnership, so that wars stop, and we all seek peace, as we sought yesterday for the war, no longer

A military option on either side is available. It will require courageous, sincere decisions and a real desire for peace from two main parties, the Houthis and the Transitional Council, decisions free from every restriction, and from every interest except for the interests of the highest Yemen, and the same applies to legality. We will find many ways to control the results of the war, the first of which is the severe social division, the collapse of the state’s structure, the multiplicity of decision-making sources, and the emergence of competing military, administrative and financial institutions, and we will go beyond the secretions of wars and coups, with fair measures for all. Many peoples have done this and were more disparate than us in races, doctrines, religions and cultures and coexisted and rose again after civilized interruption and more bloody conflicts. Acceptance of the dialogue is attenuated.

Re: 2020 annual report on children and armed conflict

As nongovernmental organizations working to alleviate humanitarian suffering and protect human rights, we strongly support United Nations Security Council Resolution 1612 (2005) and subsequent resolutions on children and armed conflict, as concrete tools for improving the protection of children in war.

We are, therefore, deeply disappointed and troubled by your new report on children and armed conflict (A/74/845-S/2020/525), and in particular, the significant disparities between the evidence presented in the report and the parties listed in its annexes for committing grave violations against children. We are writing to urge you to reconsider your decisions to de-list the Saudi-led coalition for killing and maiming children in Yemen, and the Tatmadaw for recruiting and using children in Myanmar. We also urge you to take steps to ensure that going forward, the annexes accurately and consistently reflect the evidence collected and verified by the UN’s Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism (MRM), in line with existing criteria. We have provided evidence of other concerning disparities between the annual report and its annexes in the attached annex.

Yemen's dead and injured children haunt Saudi-led war

Just one day after the UN Secretariat omitted Saudi-led forces from a "list of shame", an airstrike killed four children. The UN is under pressure to acknowledge Saudi Arabia's role in killing and maiming children.

The Saudi-led coalition had been listed for the past three years. Guterres justified his decision to remove it from this year's list, saying the group had achieved a "sustained significant decrease in killing and maiming due to airstrikes." But few are happy with the omission.

Humanitarian organisations, including Save the Children and Human Rights Watch, criticised the decision to leave Saudi-led forces and other warring parties off the list.

"After five years of war, Yemeni children are the ones who suffer the most," Yousra Semmache of Save the Children in Yemen said. "They are being killed and injured by the ongoing fighting, and they have been deprived of their most basic rights."

In the case of the Saudi-led coalition, it barely took one day for the group's removal to be thrown into question by events on the ground.

Saudi Authorities Forcibly Displace Residents for Neom City Project

The Saudi authorities removed approximately 13 properties, including houses and rest houses, in the areas of Alqan and Thuram, which are located on the borders of the "Neom" area, 100 km away from the village of Al-Khuraibah. This comes in the framework of the work on the “NEOM” project launched by the Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, in 2017 AD, and the Saudi authorities have taken several pretexts to demolish citizens’ homes, including the abolition of the owners’ homes and the questioning of the assets of buying and selling.

Sources confirmed that planning and road construction work has already started by companies and institutions working with the "NEOM" project. Heavy equipment and machinery have been seen starting to extend water and electricity lines, and works to prepare the lands. After the demolition of homes and real estate in the regions of Alqan and Thuram, the Saudi authorities also started to create buffer zones, and set up dirt barriers between villages and "Neom" areas, or what is known among the Bedouin circles as "sand infertility"; this is to prevent being there again.

Mohammed bin Salman marks 1,000 controversy-filled days as crown prince

The murder of Jamal Khashoggi and the quagmire in Yemen remain the touchstones of the MbS era. But the ill-considered confrontation with Qatar, the launch of a global oil price war in the middle of a pandemic, and concerns about Saudi Arabia’s record of violating its citizens’ human rights and civil liberties further complicate considerations about his leadership.

All of these factors serve as a mere prelude to what will come next, however, as the Saudis, like the rest of the world, seek a re-set from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, the crash and partial recovery of the global energy sector, and the broader challenges to economic recovery.

Saudi debts increased 1500% during Salman's rule

Saudi’s national debt has increased 1,500% since King Salman came to power in 2015 according to data released by the World Bank.

At the end of 2019, the kingdom’s debt reached $183.7 billion, compared to $11.8 billion in 2014; a rise of over 1,560 per cent, according to data collected by Arabi21.

Saudi Finance Minister, Mohammed Al-Jadaan, announced his government plans to borrow 220 billion riyals ($58 billion) this year, this will push the country’s debt to a quarter of a trillion dollars.

Plunging oil prices and the suspension of Hajj and Umrah travel have reduced the country’s income.

This, along with the high costs of the Yemen war and the interventions in Libya, Syria and other Arab states have increased the country’s expenditure and raised its debts, observers say.

Saudi Debt Increased 375% at The End of 2019 After Bin Salman Assuming

International data showed a rise in the rates of foreign Saudi debt since the rise of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in June 2017 at great rates. It recorded at the end of 2019 an increase of about 375%, amid expectations of a rise to more than 54% by the end of 2020.

Arabi 21, issued a report which was based on data dating back to last March, that is, before the crisis of the outbreak of the Corona virus, (which caused the suspension of pilgrimage and Umrah trips) and the collapse of oil prices. According to the report, the size of the Saudi external debt increased, at the end of last year 2019 to the level of 183.7 billion dollars, compared to 49 billion dollars in debt at the end of 2017.

This means that Saudi Arabia's external indebtedness will rise to $268.7 billion by the end of 2020, if it borrows a new $85 billion this year.

Saudi downturn deepens Yemen's economic despair

On top of war and the coronavirus pandemic, Yemen faces looming economic disaster as a crisis gripping its main benefactor Saudi Arabia dents remittances and leaves state coffers running dry.

Saudi Arabia, leading a five-year military intervention against Iran-linked Huthi rebels, has poured in tens of billions of dollars to prop up the Arab world's poorest country in the form of humanitarian aid, fuel subsidies and cash to its ailing central bank.

But as the double whammy of low oil prices and virus shutdowns triggers deep austerity measures at home, observers say Saudi Arabia no longer appears willing -- or able -- to offer Yemen the same level of support even.

Saudi Arabia may also be reassessing its role as what observers call a "regional ATM" after its expensive intervention in Yemen produced few tangible gains, while a bitter power struggle between its anti-Huthi allies complicates its efforts to exit the conflict.

"The Saudis are no more (inclined) to pour unlimited millions and billions into Yemen," a Western official tracking the kingdom's engagement in Yemen told AFP.

Riyadh is the top donor to Yemen -- and the paring back of its support will have the biggest impact, observers say.

https://www.france24.com/en/20200622-saudi-downturn-deepens-yemen-s-economic-despair = https://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/afp/article-8445879/Saudi-downturn-deepens-Yemens-economic-despair.html

My comment: This article really tells a BS narrative. As the article itself admits, “as the kingdom's military spending remains robust”, Saudi Arabia still spends ca. US$ 200 million a day for the Yemen war.

Saudi dissident warned by Canadian police he is a target

Omar Abdulaziz, who was close to murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi, told of threat posed by Saudi Arabia

A prominent Saudi dissident who is living in exile in Canada said he was recently warned by Canadian authorities that he was a “potential target” of Saudi Arabia and that he needed to take precautions to protect himself.

Omar Abdulaziz, a 29-year-old activist who had a close association with Jamal Khashoggi, the murdered Washington Post journalist, told the Guardian that he believed he was facing a threat to his safety and that the Canadians had credible information about a possible plan to harm him.

The video blogger and activist, who has nearly half a million Twitter followers, has spoken publicly about his fight against Saudi government propaganda and its use of internet trolls on Twitter.

While Abdulaziz has lived for years with the knowledge that he was one of dozens of Saudi dissidents in the crosshairs of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the de facto Saudi ruler, the activist said that the recent warning indicated a current and credible threat.

US envoy slams Houthi attempts to undermine peace

The US envoy to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday condemned Iran-backed Houthi drone and missile attacks on the Kingdom which had “set back opportunities for peace” in Yemen.

John Abizaid said the launching of armed drones and ballistic missiles into Saudi Arabia, including one fired toward Riyadh, was counterproductive to efforts aimed at bringing an end to fighting in Yemen.

The American ambassador praised the Saudi air defense forces for thwarting Tuesday’s attacks which drew worldwide condemnation.

Acknowledging the Saudi role toward restoring peace and stability in Yemen, the envoy said: “Saudi Arabia has shown a lot of forbearance in trying to find a path forward. Unfortunately, the Houthis decided to launch Iranian-designed missiles and UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) across the border. It’s unfortunate, it sets opportunities for peace back.”

https://www.arabnews.com/node/1695066/saudi-arabia

My comment: This is BS. The US is warring party in Yemen, and US statements are as realistic as Saudi ones are. While the envoy claims it’s the “Houthi drone and missile attacks on the Kingdom which had “set back opportunities for peace” in Yemen, the US itself actively supports Saudi air raids against Yemen. But in US claims, Saudi killers are the “good guys”: ““Saudi Arabia has shown a lot of forbearance in trying to find a path forward”.

U.S. Army Soldier Charged With Terrorism Offenses For Planning Deadly Ambush On Service Members In His Unit

U.S. Army Private Ethan Melzer Sent Sensitive U.S. Military Information to Members of a Neo-Nazi Group in an Attempt to Facilitate a “Mass Casualty” Attack on Melzer’s Army Unit

[…] indictment charging ETHAN MELZER for allegedly planning an attack on his U.S. Army unit by sending sensitive details about the unit – including information about its location, movements, and security – to members of an extremist organization named Order of the Nine Angles (“O9A”), an occult-based neo-Nazi and racially motivated violent extremist group. MELZER is charged with conspiring and attempting to murder U.S. nationals, conspiring and attempting to murder military service members, providing and attempting to provide material support to terrorists, and conspiring to murder and maim in a foreign country. The FBI and the U.S. Army thwarted MELZER’s plot in late-May 2020, and the FBI arrested MELZER on June 10, 2020. The case is assigned to United States District Judge Gregory H. Woods.

MELZER and his co-conspirators planned what they referred to as a “jihadi attack” during the deployment, with the objective of causing a “mass casualty” event victimizing his fellow service members. MELZER acknowledged in electronic communications that he could be killed during the attack, and, describing his willingness to die, wrote “who gives a fuck [. . .] it would be another war . . . I would’ve died successfully . . . cause [] another 10 year war in the Middle East would definitely leave a mark.”

U.N. Security Council to start talks on U.S. bid to extend Iran arms embargo

The United Nations Security Council is due to hold a first round of talks on Wednesday on a U.S. proposal to indefinitely extend an arms embargo on Iran, which is currently set to end in October under Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

The United States circulated a draft resolution on the measure to the 15-member council on Monday, diplomats said, but council veto-powers Russia and China have already signaled their opposition to the move.

Washington has long argued that the arms embargo on Iran should not be lifted. A resolution needs nine votes in favor and no vetoes by the United States, China, Russia, Britain or France to pass.

The U.S. draft would ban the sale, supply or transfer of arms or related materiel by Iran and prohibits countries from selling, supplying or transferring arms or related materiel unless approved by a Security Council committee.

If Washington is unsuccessful in extending the arms embargo, it has threatened to trigger at the Security Council a return of all U.N. sanctions on Iran under the nuclear deal, even though it quit the accord in 2018. Diplomats say Washington would face a tough, messy battle.

US Wants Security Council To Extend Iran Arms Embargo

The US has proposed a UN Security Council resolution condemning a devastating 2019 attack on Saudi oil facilities it blames on Iran and proposing an extension of an arms embargo against the Islamic republic, sources said.

The embargo, put in place as part of a nuclear accord signed with Tehran in 2015, is set to expire in October, but Washington has been working to extend the ban as tensions with its arch-rival remain high.

On Friday, France, the UK and Germany -- all signatories to the deal -- issued a joint statement arguing against lifting the ban as scheduled, saying it could have "major implications for regional security and stability."

The US resolution -- a draft of which was obtained by AFP -- "condemns the attacks of September 2019 against Saudi Arabia carried out by Iran".

It also calls for the body to "prohibit the supply, sale or transfer, direct or indirect... of weapons and related materials," excluding those that are approved with 30 days' notice.

Russia Slams Europe’s Dual Standards on JCPOA, ‘Destructive’ US Actions

Russia has censured the European signatories to a 2015 nuclear deal for putting pressure on Iran over its nuclear program in spite of claiming they remain committed to the accord, saying such problems are rooted in “destructive” measures adopted by the United States against the accord. In a comment published on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website on Monday, Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova hit out at the UK, Germany and France for introducing an anti-Iran resolution, which was passed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s Board of Governors last week.

Wikipedia: Blockade of Yemen

United Kingdom's role

Although Britain has called on Saudi Arabia to ease the siege on Yemen and the British government allocated 4 million pounds to aid meet emergency requirements,[26][27] the UK government has officially supported the Saudi-led coalition since the beginning of the conflict.[28]

In 2015 the then Foreign Secretary, the Rt Hon Philip Hammond MP, confirmed that the Saudis were using UK-manufactured aircraft and weaponry in Yemen and set out the extent of UK support for Saudi Arabia: "We have a significant infrastructure supporting the Saudi air force generally and if we are requested to provide them with enhanced support—spare parts, maintenance, technical advice, resupply—we will seek to do so. We’ll support the Saudis in every practical way short of engaging in combat."[29]

In 2018 UN experts called on the UK government to stop giving Saudi Arabia bombs to use in Yemen.

In a 2019 Guardian article titled: "The Saudis couldn’t do it without us’: the UK's true role in Yemen's deadly war"[30] Journalist Arron Merat explains: "Every day Yemen is hit by British bombs – dropped by British planes that are flown by British-trained pilots and maintained and prepared inside Saudi Arabia by thousands of British contractors."

Merat makes it clear that: "Britain does not merely supply weapons for this war: it provides the personnel and expertise required to keep the war going. The British government has deployed RAF personnel to work as engineers, and to train Saudi pilots and targeteers – while an even larger role is played by BAE Systems, Britain’s biggest arms company, which the government has subcontracted to provide weapons, maintenance and engineers inside Saudi Arabia."[30]

In 2019 a Channel 4 documentary film named: "Britain's Hidden War: Channel 4 Dispatches", a former BAE Systems worker revealed that the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) would be unable to fly its fleet of Typhoon fighter jets without BAE's support; the former BAE worker explained: “With the amount of aircraft they’ve got and the operational demands, if we weren’t there in 7 to 14 days there wouldn’t be a jet in the sky.”[31]

Yemen Monthly Economic Update May 2020

In May, political impasse continued, while socio-economic conditions deteriorated further, affected by the COVID-19 outbreak, rising food prices, and downsizing of humanitarian operations, especially in the north.

Following the declaration of self-rule in the southern governorates in April, the Southern Transitional Council (STC) stepped up efforts to improve autonomous control over public functions in the south. In May, an oversight economic committee was established with up to 27 expert members. The oversight committee, which reports directly to STC leadership, is expected to provide supervision and guidance on economic management to government institutions in Aden. Other key responsibilities include the preparation of reform agendas to address issues with public services delivery (electricity, water, health care) and improve the overall performance and efficiency in the public sector. In addition, task teams have been formed to monitor government operating expenses, especially by economic and revenue institutions.

Reportedly, most revenue-collecting government institutions in Aden have deposited public revenue into the designated “self-rule” accounts with the Al Ahli Bank, in response to the STC’s request. Major economic institutions such as the Customs, Tax Authority, Aden Refinery Company, Port of Aden, and Authority of Aden Free Zone are among those reported to have complied with the STC. It is not clear if the STC has gained oversight over oil exports, the central source of government revenue. The STC stated that the measure was intended to enhance transparency of the use of public resources, fulfill payroll obligations, and rationalize the recourse to money printing to finance the deficit, but not to overrule the existing budget framework. Public sector salary payments remain irregular in the southern governorates. While the stagnation of salary disbursements was first reported in early 2020, disruptions in revenue collection since the STC’s self-rule declaration appear to have exacerbated the problem.

Meanwhile in Sana’a, the de facto authorities implemented a series of legislative economic reforms to improve the business environment in the controlled territory (“north”). On May 3, 2020, the de facto authorities issued Laws No. 5 to No. 8 (2020)

Thread on @StateDept #Yemen Country Reports on Terrorism 2019

UAE-backed #Yemen-i Security Belt Forces, which played a significant role in CT efforts, were used by the #STC to exercise control over significant parts of Aden in August.

#Yemen-i government’s Coast Guard played a critical role in interdicting weapons and other illegal materials destined for Yemen-based terrorist groups ... The central-southern coast remains highly vulnerable to maritime smuggling of fighters, weapons.

Throughout 2019, AQAP, ISIS-Yemen, Hizballah, the IRGC-QF, and other Iran-backed terrorist groups continued to exploit the political and security vacuum created by the ongoing conflict

Gov't of Yemen #GOY cooperated with #USG on CT efforts; however, because of the instability and violence in Yemen, as well as its own degraded capabilities, #GOY cannot fully enforce CT measures across the country.

https://twitter.com/BashaReport/status/1275827135597469696

My comment: AQAP and ISIS are “Iran-backed”?? Being hampererd by misconceptions (due to own propaganda narratives) of this size, US counterterrorism efforts in Yemen necessarily will fail.

Comment by Fuad Rajeh: the US administration has admired roles of both Hadi's government and UAE-backed militias. Dear US, could you please respect our minds or shut the fuck up?!

Arab Parliament holds Iran fully responsible for supplying Houthi coup militia with smart weapons

The Arab Parliament condemned in the strongest terms the repeated attacks by the Houthi coup militia on the Kingdom by launching ballistic missiles and drones, and called on the United Nations to oblige the Houthi coup militia to stop these cowardly aggressive actions targeting civilians and civilian objects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
In a resolution issued at the end of its public session held virtually today on the latest developments in Yemen, the parliament held the Iranian regime full responsible for its flagrant violation of the UN Security Council resolutions and its continued provision of Houthi coup militia with smart weapons, ballistic missiles and drones with the aim of destabilizing security in the region and perpetuating chaos in Republic of Yemen.

https://www.spa.gov.sa/viewfullstory.php?lang=en&newsid=2102036

my comment: The “Arab Parliament” is a Saudi-led scam. “Parliament” and “Saudi” fits together like ox and opera. – Iranian arms supplies to Houthis are minor in any way. Any headline like “European Parliament holds member states and US fully responsible for supplying Saudi terrorist army with smart weapons” would make much more sense.

Houthi militia undermining regional stability

Instead of working on ways to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and reduce its impact on the Yemeni people, the Houthi terrorist militia has been targeting civilian areas in the Saudi cities of Riyadh, Najran, and Jazan with explosives-laden drones and ballistic missiles.

As Coalition Spokesman Colonel Turki Al Maliki pointed out, the Houthis continue in their villainous attempts aimed at civilians who are protected under International Humanitarian Law.
The attempts to deliberately target civilians reflect the failure of the terrorist militia and its immoral approach towards civilians.
The repeated targeting of populated areas and civilian facilities in Saudi Arabia by the Houthis is a war crime and threatens directly the safety of civilians.
The Joint Forces Command of the Coalition is totally justified in undertaking all decisive, rigorous measures against the terrorist Houthi militia to neutralise and destroy their capabilities in protection of innocent civilians against these haphazard, villainous acts in accordance with the customary International Humanitarian Law.

Yemen: Welcome To The Past

The Shia rebels still control access to over a third of the Yemeni population and foreign aid groups as well as Yemeni suppliers have to pay higher and higher “taxes” to transport anything (food, fuel, medical supplies) to these populations. The money demanded to get past roadblocks is outright bribery, or extortion if you take into account the guns often pointed at travelers to speed up payment. These fees are now a major source of income for the rebels, who have lost regular cash infusions from Iran (which is also broke) and fees and stolen aid supplies from the Red Sea port of Hodeida, the largest Yemen port on the Red Sea and where most of the foreign aid comes in. The government and Arab Coalition finally broke rebel control of the port this year. The rebels can only raise the checkpoint fees so high before the traders realize that it would be cheaper to hire smugglers to get the shipments past the rebel toll keepers.

The rebel budget problems mean the fighting is more desultory and preformationary than ever. Less money means less cash to buy ammo and fuel from local sources, usually black market. Yemen has long supported a thriving black-market economy for just about anything. Sort of a tradition. But six years of civil war have damaged the underlying economy and the rampant theft of foreign aid has dried up that source of sustenance as well. The rebels are still active but mostly to deliver verbal threats or the occasional missile or UAV attack. Iran cannot send as many missile and UAV components so that the ballistic missiles and UAVs can be assembled and armed locally.

PERSGA: Possible Safer oil spill in the Red Sea might halt Hodeida Port operations

The Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden (PERSGA) held on Monday the Houthis fully responsible to any damage that the maritime environment of the region might sustain due to oil spill from the Safer tanker.

The Houthis have persistently banned the repair service to the tanker which has been unchecked since the Houthis took over of Hodeida early 2015.

The Secretary General of the PERSGA, Ziad Abu Ghararah, stated that the condition of the tanker remains unknown and it is hard to forecast what will happen amid the constant rejection by the Houthis on permitting technical teams to check the tanker for doing the required maintenance

https://www.alsahwa-yemen.net/en/p-40398

My comment: Once again the same thing. The Hadi government blocks the Houthi claim to sell the crude on SAFER, thus both parties block any solution.

Muslim Brotherhood's Socotra setback deals blow to Turkish influence in Yemen

Another wave of Brotherhood escalation is expected in Shabwa province.

Yemeni political sources described ending the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood in Socotra as an end to Turkey’s attempts to turn the island into its gateway for encroachment in Yemen.

The sources confirmed the existence of a link between the recent tensions in Socotra and the role of leaderships affiliated with Qatar and Turkey. These figures worked to fuel conflicts and to prepare for the pro-Doha current in the Yemeni government to completely take control of the strategic island in the Indian Ocean.

Yemeni Muslim Brotherhood media officials and activists renewed their media attacks on the Saudi-led Arab coalition, accusing it of colluding with the Southern Transitional Council (STC), and called for alternative solutions such as creating a new coalition in Yemen led by Ankara, and establishing an alternative military council to the “legitimacy” camp.

The political sources considered the campaigns assailing the Arab alliance and raising the possibility of Turkish intervention in Yemen in response to the losses incurred by the Muslim Brotherhood in Yemen, as indicating the growth of the anti-coalition voices within the legitimate government and its institutions that are dominated by the Reform Party (the Muslim Brotherhood affiliate in Yemen).

https://thearabweekly.com/muslim-brotherhoods-socotra-setback-deals-blow-turkish-influence-yemen = https://ahvalnews.com/turkey-yemen/muslim-brotherhoods-socotra-setback-deals-blow-turkish-influence-yemen

Was Iran behind the Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia?

The question now is how Saudi Arabia and its allies will respond.

Iran closely follows the battles in Yemen. In the past, Iran has blamed the Houthis for Iranian attacks carried out on the kingdom. For instance the massive drone and cruise missile attack in September 2019 was carried out by Iran yet was blamed initially on the Houthis. A May attack likely carried out from Iraq by Iranian proxies was also blamed on the Houthis.

This is routine way of operating for Iran. It wants a cut-out to make it seem like a group between it and the adversary was responsible – then it can pretend to be innocent. It does this in Iraq, using fake names for new “rogue” groups to carry out rocket attacks on the US. Iran likes layers of deception.

Iran’s Press TV has a long report on the large scale attack that unfolded in the early hours of June 23. This was “retaliation” it says for Saudi Arabia’s “bloody military campaign.” Whose retaliation – Iran’s or the Houthis? The report makes it appear that in fact Iran has a role here. We know that Iran has sent technicians to Yemen and that former IRGC Quds Force leader Qasem Soleimani took interest in upping the capabilities of the Houthi rebels – by Seth J. Frantzman

Yemen caught in the crosshairs of Iran and others - analysis

The latest Yemen crisis involves the island of Socotra where UAE-backed supporters are accused of a “coup” by pro-Turkish media.

Iranian media has reported that southern Yemen is now linked to “Zionists” claiming that news reports in Israel suggested southern Yemen might one day have a connection to Israel. This is the usual Iranian model of suggesting every enemy is a “Zionist.”

The latest Yemen crisis involves the island of Socotra where UAE-backed supporters are accused of a “coup” by pro-Turkish media. Al-Jazeera and Anadolu media have weighed in, using the usual language they craft to portray one side as good and the other bad. Because Qatar and Turkey oppose the UAE they also oppose any group backed by the UAE.

Were Turkey to try to also involve itself in Yemen, potentially on the side of Iran, that would be a major step. How Ankara would do that is unclear, but Ankara and Doha want to pressure Saudi Arabia, so they may seek to find a way.

More likely, the Yemen conflict is about narratives and intrigue when it comes to Turkey and Qatar – by Seth J. Frantzman

https://www.jpost.com/middle-east/yemen-in-the-crosshairs-of-iran-and-others-analysis-632347

My comment: The usual Iran-bashing now is amplified to an Iran-Qatar-Turkey bashing. – That „UAE-backed supporters are accused of a “coup” by pro-Turkish media“ is 100 % bullshit. It’s the Hadi government who accuses the UAE-backed separatists of a coup. Media just adopt this. The narrative of „pro-Turkish media“ hides this dsimply fact and tries to make this accuse sound biased and worthless.

The statement also indicated that the offensive operation targeted the Ministry of Defense and Intelligence, Salman Air Force Base, and military sites in Jizan and Najran regions.

Saudi Arabian Cities Come Under Attack From Yemeni Rebels

Saudi Arabia came under a missile and drone attack from Iran-backed Yemen rebels that targeted the capital and other cities, as international efforts to end their five-year war have floundered.

[Sanaa gov.] Acting Governor of Hodeidah, Mohammad Ayyash Quhim and First Deputy Governor, Ahmed Al-Bishri, on Tuesday, inspected the contents of the food aid convoy, which was provided by the local authority with a wide popular contribution from the people of the governorate.

Plagegeister

How To Track Desert Locust Swarms

Billions of desert locusts are swarming across East Africa, multiplying in numbers over several months of favorable rain and breeding conditions, creating what the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) called an “unprecedented threat to food security,” and the worst locust upsurge in East Africa in seventy years.

“We do have a chance to nip this problem in the bud, but that’s not what we’re doing at the moment. We’re running out of time,” said Mark Lowcock, UN undersecretary-general for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief.

Recognizing the urgent need for informed control operations, and locust tracking, the UN has published several comprehensive datasets and open source tools. In particular, there are four crucial aspects to analyzing the locust insurgency: movement, weather and climate, containment efforts for locust breeding, and agricultural impact.

In this guide, we will take a deep dive into the public data and tools that will allow individual investigators to understand and monitor a rapidly evolving international six-legged crisis.

The best resource to track the locust development is Locust Hub, a centralized data source organized by the United Nations FAO. The portal offers a geographic and time sensitive visualization of both hopper groups and swarms. The data is concatenated from reports to the FAO from affected countries

Massive fire caused by oil warehouse explosion destroys homes in Yemen’s Sanaa

Dozens of homes and private properties in Yemen’s capital Sanaa were destroyed as a petroleum product warehouse belonging to a black market trader exploded, causing a fire to break out Monday night, local residents told Al Arabiya.

The fire had reportedly started in a house owned by Naji al-Hakim, which was used to store petroleum derivatives that are sold on the black market.
