Houthi-Saudi Agreement underway

Member of the Houthi revolutionary committee, Mohammed Al-Maqalih, on Friday said an agreement between the Houthi Group and Saudi Arabia is underway.

It is being cooked on a low heat, he said, adding that secret negotiations between the two sides have been continuing for months. The UN envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, is sponsoring the talks, he said.

But I don't think the agreement will lay the groundwork for real peace or a state the Yemeni people aspire for, he said in a post on Facebook.

The agreement, some terms of which have been leaked, will maintain the status quo, with Yemen to stay divided and controlled by many armies and its resources looted and misused, he said.

Applying the Iraq model of quotas in Yemen is likely to be one of the outcomes of the agreement, he elaborated.

Last week, senior Houthi leader, Mohammed Ali Al-Houthi, told Aljazeera TV that there have been communications between his group and Saudis but they can't be called negotiations.

Letter dated 18 August 2020 from the Secretary-General addressed to the President of the Security Council

Since the Security Council meeting on 15 July 2020, my Special Envoy for Yemen, in cooperation with the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs of the Secretariat and the United Nations Office for Project Services, has continued to engage with Houthi leadership to enable the deployment of the United Nations mission to the vessel. The Houthis reverted with a range of technical questions, which have been answered in writing. The mission is ready to deploy pending authorization by the Houthis, who control the territory where the Safer is moored.

Averting this calamity should not be politicized. It is about people’s lives. The Yemeni people are already facing impossible odds: a war, a free-falling economy, diseases, shattered public institutions, unreliable infrastructure, hunger and uncertain futures. The Safer is a solvable problem and does not need to be added to their many other burdens.

Mohammed bin Salman pulls out of planned meeting in Washington with Netanyahu

Saudi crown prince had been due to stage public meeting with Israeli prime minister but cancelled trip over fears details had been leaked, according to sources

The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, pulled out of a planned visit to Washington DC next week to meet the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after he feared that the news had leaked and that his presence in the US capital would become a "nightmare".

It had not yet been agreed whether the meeting between the crown prince and Netanyahu would have been recorded and then announced or conducted live in front of the cameras.

But those pushing for it to happen, which included US President Donald Trump and his son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner, see the prospect of a handshake between the men as a way to relaunch Mohammed bin Salman's image as a young Arab peacemaker and shore up regional support for the US-brokered deal between the United Arab Emirates and Israel.

In the ensuing statement, the crown prince would have stopped short of announcing recognition of Israel, but the meeting itself would have been the strongest hint that the kingdom was also on a path towards normalising relations.

A date for the visit had been agreed and a protocol team had already been dispatched.

He would have arrived on 31 August after the end of the Republican Convention. It would have been his first visit to the US since March 2018 when he stayed for around three weeks in a big PR exercise.

Not wanting to stay either in the Saudi embassy nor the ambassador’s residence, known locations which would have attracted demonstrations, four houses had been purchased at a secret location just for his stay, MEE was told.

The plan fell apart on Saturday when the crown prince received reports that the visit had been leaked. His bottom-line condition with the White House was that the visit should go ahead in total secrecy and that his presence in the capital would only be known once the event itself was taking place.

US Charges Three Over Collecting Monetary Aid for War-Torn Yemen

The US Justice Department has charged three people in connection with a campaign to collect monetary assistance for the oppressed Yemenis, who are suffering under the years-long Saudi war and blockade.

It claimed that Muzzamil Zaidi and Asim Naqvi, US citizens living in Iran’s holy city of Qom and the American city of Houston, respectively, and Ali Chawla, a Pakistani national residing in Qom, had violated the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

Justice Department officials alleged that the defendants “have considerable operational links” to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and moved US currency from the United States to Iran.

Quitting Our Addiction To Small Power Conflicts

Washington needs to stop picking fights with adversaries that pose no threat to America.

The U.S. has a poor track record in its conflicts and standoffs with smaller regional powers. Especially when it has pursued maximalist goals that threaten the security or the very existence of other governments, the U.S. has predictably encountered stiff resistance. Wars of regime change have likewise yielded tremendous costs with virtually no benefits to be seen. Even when the U.S. successfully eliminates a small power adversary, it is usually not worth the effort and the human cost is always far too high. Despite the recurring failures of U.S. policies, Washington remains addicted to picking fights with relatively weak, medium-sized states that pose little or no threat to America.

America’s preoccupation with attacking and coercing small adversaries is a bad habit that our policymakers and pundits just can’t quit.

Iran is widely regarded as a significant threat to the United States, but believing this requires greatly exaggerating Iranian power and overstating U.S. interests in the Middle East. Put simply, Iran isn’t capable of posing nearly as much of a threat to the surrounding region as Iran hawks claim, and the things it can threaten are not vital interests of the United States in any case. Conflict and tension with Iran are not inevitable, but rather they are something that the U.S. chooses because of the way it expansively defines its interests and inflates the danger from Iran. A crucial part of practicing “strategic discipline” is correctly assessing what our vital interests truly are and how best to secure them. If our policymakers did this, we would find far fewer occasions for small power conflicts because they would understand that these small powers don’t endanger what matters most to us.

Because the U.S. insists on treating these smaller powers as major, intolerable threats, the U.S. and its smaller adversaries fall into patterns of hostility and mistrust that become self-justifying. The U.S. perceives a smaller power as a serious threat, and then begins coordinating with other states to oppose it. Those relationships in turn become the cause for new and deeper entanglements in the conflicts of the region. How did the U.S. become involved in the destruction and starving of Yemen? Because the Obama administration wanted to “reassure” regional clients that they still had American backing, and because they indulged those same clients in their fantasy that attacking Yemen had something to do with opposing Iran. One faulty commitment leads to even worse errors and crimes. If the U.S. had not been so concerned to keep regional clients happy, it would not have made one of the most catastrophic decisions of this century by backing the war on Yemen – by Daniel Larison

Why Is The U.S. Still Suspending Aid To Yemen?

If it doesn't resume ASAP, many more will die because of terrible decisions made in Washington.

The U.S. aid suspension has been in place since March. The lapse in aid has coincided with the country’s COVID-19 outbreak, which has had a devastating effect on the population already suffering from war, starvation, and preventable disease. Shutting off all aid funding at the same time that the U.S. has pulled its funding from the WHO and international support for U.N. efforts has been drying up is especially harmful and cruel to the tens of millions of people that depend on humanitarian assistance.

Al-Monitor also reported on the aid groups’ appeal

Houthi interference with aid deliveries has been a real problem, but it is one that is being addressed. It is also senselessly destructive to deprive the population of desperately needed aid to put pressure on the Houthis. It amounts to punishing the innocent for Houthi misconduct, and it compounds the harm done by the aid diversion that it is supposedly meant to stop. It is every bit as cruel and absurd as using sanctions to strangle people for the actions of their government. The U.S. is the only aid donor that has taken this drastic and unwise step.

U.S. policy in Yemen for the last five and a half years has been appalling, but until this year there was at least some effort being made to alleviate the world’s worst humanitarian crisis created by the indefensible war on Yemen. For almost six months, that has no longer been true. The U.S. continues to arm the Saudi coalition and support them as they wage war on the people of Yemen, and now it is withholding crucial aid that these organizations need to be able to prevent more deaths of innocent Yemenis. The halt in aid could not have come at a worse time as the pandemic has been tearing through the population. If the U.S. doesn’t resume the aid as soon as possible, many more Yemenis will needlessly die because of the terrible decisions made in Washington – by Daniel Larison

How Great Power Competition and Regional Rivalries are Destabilizing the Red Sea Region

The current strategic trends in the Red Sea region enhance a prospect of further security destabilization and of a setback in the realm of economic and social development of the fragile political entities in the region.

The Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden region is another example of the deficiencies both of “Leading from behind” and of “America First” approaches. The next American presidential administration should generate a coherent policy towards the Red Sea arena. While remaining vigilant of Beijing’s and Moscow’s future regional intentions, Washington does not have to increase its military footprint or allocate many more financial resources in the area in order to secure its leadership position. It should reassure all the stakeholders of its intention to play a meaningful regional role through the promotion of partnerships and deconfliction mechanisms. Yet, it is difficult to envision a transformation of regional dynamics unless Washington will act proactively to restrain the internal struggle between its own allies.

Letters to the Editor: American weapons are inflicting terror on Yemen, and we don’t care

The atrocious, shameful destruction of Yemen with U.S. weapons by Saudi Arabia should be a front-page item in the Los Angeles Times, which these days has less coverage of foreign affairs, especially when it is our country that is involved in criminal activity overseas.

Increasing numbers of foreigners and even Americans are seeing the United States as the world’s biggest terrorist. We did not have to use nuclear bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, napalm in Southeast Asia, depleted uranium bullets in Iraq and other terrible weapons elsewhere.

We have become so immune to these atrocities that we now even feed our own poor in Michigan lead-contaminated water and muzzle the Environmental Protection Agency, allowing more Americans to be poisoned.

The problem clearly indicates that our government looks at the terrorized people as “them,” and those who have the wealth of our nation as “us.” Better many of “them” than one of “us,” goes the familiar saying, and as long as there is money to be made and the people being terrorized are not white, it will continue.

A Saudi dissident suing Twitter over a massive 2016 hack says the platform's incompetence got multiple whistleblowers killed

In July 2020, the US accused two Saudi nationals employed by Twitter of hacking accounts critical of the kingdom and passing their personal information to Saudi intelligence.

One of those allegedly hacked in 2016 was Ali al-Ahmed, a Saudi scholar and activist living in exile in the US.

He is currently suing Twitter for damages, saying the 2016 breach led to the deaths of his whistleblower sources in Saudi Arabia.

Al-Ahmed said the people identified in the breach, many who used anonymous accounts to pass him information, have since been targeted in Saudi Arabia.

"I know some of them have died, many have been tortured, and remain behind bars," al-Ahmed told Business Insider.

Twitter declined to comment.

The Bogus ‘Emergency’ And The War On Yemen

At each step, Pompeo & Company have sought to avoid oversight and accountability.

The risk to civilians from the weapons that the U.S. has been selling the Saudis and the UAE is the main reason why these arms sales have encountered such strong resistance from Congress. It is not surprising that Pompeo’s State Department did not weigh this risk seriously, because their priority has been to get the weapons to the Saudi coalition no matter what the coalition does with them. That is why Pompeo previously certified that the Saudi coalition was seeking to reduce harm to civilians when all of the evidence and the majority of his own officials said the opposite: he wanted to protect current and future arms sales at any cost. The purpose of abusing the emergency declaration last year was to avoid Congressional scrutiny, because it is undeniable that the Saudis and the UAE have been and would be using these weapons to commit war crimes against innocent people in Yemen. Because the Trump administration could not defend its indefensible Yemen policy, they sought to go around Congress by abusing this provision in the law governing arms exports.

It is significant that the IG report does not give an evaluation of Pompeo’s decision to declare an emergency, so the report does not and cannot exonerate Pompeo on the most important question.

At each step, Pompeo and the administration have sought to avoid oversight, accountability, and transparency when it comes to their support for the war on Yemen. First, Pompeo lied to Congress in 2018 that the Saudis and their allies were trying to reduce harm to civilians. That bogus certification came just weeks after the massacre of 40 schoolboys at Dahyan carried out by coalition jets using U.S.-made weapons. Then last spring the administration used the bogus emergency declaration to get around Congressional opposition to additional arms sales, and then when there is an investigation into that abuse the department tries to cover up the embarrassing details by redacting things that shouldn’t be concealed.

An unredacted copy of the report shows that they were discussing using an emergency declaration for weeks before Pompeo claimed that there was an emergency

Obviously the administration was looking for a way to skirt Congress, and abusing the emergency provision in the law was their way of doing that. They then cooked up the bogus emergency, citing threats from Iran in keeping with their general obsession with that country, and pushed through arms sales that would have been rejected if they had come before Congress – by Daniel Larison

Out of Yemen, a Reminder of What May Happen Without 'Extreme Vetting' and 'Travel Ban' Policies

All but lost in political convention news comes a federal indictment of a Yemeni student in Pennsylvania who allegedly hid the fact, from U.S. State Department consular adjudicators in Yemen, that he'd fought with Iran-backed, anti-America Houthi rebels and harbored such fervent hatreds that his Facebook page wished "death to all Americans, especially Jews" and vowed he would stay on the path of jihad.

Because of difficulties in vetting visa applicants and refugees from there, Yemen is among the countries on President Donald Trump's often misnamed "Muslim ban" proclamation that Democratic nominee Joe Biden has promised to immediately discard "on Day One" should he be elected. The three charges of lying to the FBI against 25-year-old Gaafar Muhammed Ebrahim Al-Wazer (lately of Altoona, Pa.) are the latest of many cases I have reported (and here, here, and here) highlighting that U.S. security vetting systems are garbage-in-garbage-out when running names of aspiring U.S. visitors from Muslim-majority developing countries like Yemen (as well as other countries covered by the travel ban, such as Somalia, Chad, and Libya). U.S.-designated terrorist groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS operate easily and anonymously off all radars in their ungoverned hinterlands.

The US helped create the UN precisely to block antics like Mike Pompeo’s obsession with Iran

The 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran was a breakthrough for nuclear non-proliferation and a model for global diplomacy. While peaceful relations with allies and friends is admirable, the real work of diplomacy is its effectiveness with presumed adversaries. In the Iran deal, the second breakthrough was détente between the U.S. and Iran, after both sides had engaged in belligerent rhetoric against the other for decades.

As the U.S. under the Trump administration — and at the behest of an outspoken Iran hawk, Mike Pompeo — has tried everything to sabotage years of negotiating efforts by the Obama administration and brought us to the brink of war with Iran, world powers, Iranians, and the American populace continue to support diplomacy and a peaceful resolution. While President Trump has maintained the language of his campaign platform and appears to want a deal with Iran in his own name, instead of a war, it has become increasingly plain that Secretary of State Pompeo wants no such deal.

In the just under two weeks since the U.S. attempt to extend the arms embargo on Iran through a U.N. Security Council resolution failed miserably, an obsessed Pompeo has tweeted more than 20 times about Iran, taking up approximately a third of all his activity. After the vote, Pompeo lambasted the international body stating, “The Security Council’s failure to act decisively in defense of international peace and security is inexcusable.” While the irony of such a statement — in light of the Trump administration’s destruction of a deal that advanced peace and prevented Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon — is striking, the dogmatic tone should not be overlooked. During his short tenure as Secretary of State, Pompeo has led the U.S. to increased isolation in the international community, slowly eroded the State Department, undermined diplomacy in favor of hostility, been investigated for misconduct, and his discourse has grown gradually more divisive both domestically and globally.

It’s US against most of UN council on Iran sanctions

The United States and most of the rest of the U.N. Security Council dug in their heels Thursday on diametrically opposed positions over the restoration of international sanctions on Iran.

In increasingly intense rhetorical terms, U.S. officials insisted they had acted legitimately in triggering a so-called “snapback” mechanism that would re-impose all U.N. sanctions Iran next month. They said the re-imposition of sanctions is a done deal and nothing can stop it.

“Last week, the U.S. triggered the 30-day process to restore virtually all UN sanctions on Iran after the Security Council failed to uphold its mission to maintain international peace and security,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a tweet. “These sanctions will snap back at midnight GMT on September 20.”

But as they did when Pompeo traveled to the U.N. to invoke snapback, almost all other council members flatly rejected that position, repeating their position that the U.S. had lost its legal standing to act after President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal two years ago.

At the heart of the dispute is the Security Council resolution that endorsed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, between Iran and six major powers — the U.S., Russia, China, United Kingdom, France and Germany.

It allows “a JCPOA participant state” to trigger the “snapback” mechanism. The U.S. insists that as an original JCPOA participant it has the legal right even though it ceased participating in 2018.

Houthi official dubs UK envoy as 'Satan talking about peace'

A Houthi official labeled the British envoy to Yemen as Satan, after Ambassador Michael Aron accused the group of refusing ceasefire in the war-torn country.

"Peace means comprehensive, sustainable halt of war, but a Satan speaking for peace rejects this and insists on persistent aggression and blockade on Yemen," Mohamed al-Bokhaiti added, citing a tweet by the UK diplomat.

"He calls for a provisional ceasefire at a front where he started losing, in order for he can rearrange his ranks," the Houthi said hinting at battles ongoing in the Yemeni northeastern governorate of Marib.

UK 'providing training for repressive regimes', claims campaign group

Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT) has published a list of 17 countries listed by the Foreign Office as "human rights priorities" which have all received some form of British military training.

It includes training on fast jets and in amphibious warfare.

Neither the Ministry of Defence nor the Foreign Office has disputed the list.

The list of countries published by CAAT includes Saudi Arabia, Egypt, China and Uzbekistan.

The data stems from a parliamentary question which revealed that from 2018-2020, the UK has been providing military training to more than half of the 30 countries defined by the Foreign Office as being places where the government is "particularly concerned about human rights issues".

Specific examples of the training include:

Infantry sniper training for Bahrain

Electronic warfare, fast jet, tactical and weapons training for Saudi Arabia

Amphibious warfare and commando training for Egypt

Andrew Smith of CAAT said: "By training and collaborating with despots, dictatorships and human rights abusers, the UK risks making itself complicit in the abuses that are being inflicted."

He said that the case that stood out the most was that of Saudi Arabia where UK and US-supplied arms have been used in the war in Yemen, at times leading to civilian casualties.

In Yemen's disastrous six-year civil war, both the Saudi-led air campaign and the Houthi rebels have been accused of war crimes.

"The fact is that the UK has a close military relationship with a lot of undemocratic and abusive regimes," Mr Smith added.

The Parliamentary Defence Select Committee chairman, MP Tobias Ellwood, defended the practice of working with countries on the list.

"The aim is to nudge these countries towards the same standards that we uphold," he said.

"If we backed away from supporting them then who would fill the vacuum? We are denying space for Russia and China to advance their footprint (in these countries)."

My comment: Ellwood proofs that he is a ridiculous clown.

Ministry of Defence blacklists British journalists who report on UK military

The British Ministry of Defence has blacklisted Declassified UK, a media organisation producing in-depth, critical journalism on UK foreign and security policies. It is the latest attempt by Whitehall to censor the media and the National Union of Journalists has called on Defence Secretary Ben Wallace to “intervene”.

The blacklisting was revealed after a journalist working for Declassified UK asked the British Ministry of Defence (MOD) press office for a comment on the case of a British soldier being investigated by the military police for protesting against the war in Yemen.

British soldier arrested for protesting in uniform against Yemen war

A serving British soldier was arrested by the Royal Military Police on Monday after protesting in uniform against Britain’s support for Saudi Arabia in the Yemen war. Yemen-born Lance Corporal Ahmed Al-Babati was filmed in Whitehall outside the Ministry of Defence before being taken away by three military police officers.

Al-Babati joined the British Army in 2017. He described the British government as having “blood on its hands” with lucrative arms sales to Saudi Arabia

People are ‘demanding’ the release of a UK soldier, arrested for protesting over Yemen

People are ‘demanding’ the release of a UK soldier. He was arrested by military police for protesting against the UK government’s involvement in the war in Yemen. But his detainment raises bigger questions over the army and its role in society – and whether personnel should be ‘unionised’.

Al-Babati’s arrest is unfair and unjust – but unfortunately likely to be within the military’s rules. But his protest offers a glimpse into another possibility, if we as a country have to have a military at all. And it’s the potential of having a unionised, politically and socially mobilised armed forces on the side of the working classes.

UAE spy agents train PKK terrorists in Syria

Agents began visiting terror camps in northern Syria in 2018

United Arab Emirates has sent many spy agents to Syria to train YPG/PKK terrorists over the past few years, Anadolu Agency has learned from multiple sources.

After holding secret talks with the terrorists in 2017, the UAE sent intelligence officers in the area the following year.

They train YPG/PKK terrorists in espionage, counter-espionage, sabotage, assassination acts, signal intelligence, information security and communication networks.

These trainings were held in Qamishli, Hasaka and Deir ez-Zor in northwestern Syria.

The Emirati officers also established a secret direct hotline with the terrorists.

The codenames of these agents are available with Anadolu Agency.

Film: Libya's 'Game of Drones' - full documentary - BBC Africa Eye

The UAE has denied intervention in Libya’s civil war. But the BBC has uncovered new evidence that a laser-guided missile, fired from a UAE drone, killed 26 unarmed cadets in January 2020, that the UAE is still deploying drones and other military aircraft in support of its Libyan allies, and that Egypt is facilitating this intervention.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DVE0tkGSaM

more to read in a thread:

Libya, Jan 2020. CCTV shows a group of young men in the last 5 seconds of their lives. Moments later, they’re hit by a strike for which no one has ever claimed responsibility. What hit them? Where did it come from? Which foreign powers are secretly fuelling Libya’s war?

On Jan 4 2020, just after 9pm, around 50 cadets were doing routine drills at a military academy in Libya’s capital, Tripoli. The next second, an explosion left 26 young men dead or dying on the parade ground.

Tripoli is the base for Libya’s UN-recognised Govt of National Accord (GNA). At the time of this attack, it was under siege from the Libyan National Army (LNA), which fights for a rival government based in the east.

But the LNA was quick to deny involvement. The cadets, according to an LNA spokesman, had been killed by local shelling, or perhaps by an attack from inside the academy. We’re going to show you that this is not true, and we’re going to start with this box of shrapnel.

Waffenexporte in Spannungsgebiete: "How dare you?!"

[Hadi] Gov’t condemns Houthis recruitment of African refugees

Minister of Information, Muammar Al-Eryani said on Saturday that the Houthis’ recruitment of illegal African migrants coming from the Horn of Africa is a war crime and a crime against humanity that violate international laws and norms.

He explained that the Houthis use the recruited Africans in military acts that threaten Yemen’s security and stability and the Gulf nations and world interests.

Al-Eryani said that the Houthis recruit the African migrants to replace killed militants who have been killed in various fighting fronts particularly Marib, Al-Jawf and Al-Baida. Claiming that the enemy in a civil war is committing “military acts that threaten Yemen’s security and stability and the Gulf nations and world interests” sonds like a grotesque joke.

Yemen’s warring sides blamed for destruction of heritage during heavy rainfall

Yemen is trying to save its cultural heritage by appealing to UNESCO and the international community, after many of its historic cities have started collapsing due to heavy rains.

What is happening could be a natural disaster, but the internationally recognized government and the Houthis are also to be blamed. They have long engaged in a conflict neglecting the country’s infrastructure, which has worsened the consequences of the heavy rainfall, putting Yemen’s historic heritage and cities at risk of obliteration.

For the first time in three decades, the heavy rainfall in Yemen have caused the flooding of giant dams, such as the Marib Dam, east of Sanaa, which has a capacity of 400 million cubic meters, threatening the oldest and largest archaeological area in the country.

The recent severe floods also caused the collapse of the Rownah Dam, east of Sanaa, with a capacity of 252,000 cubic meters.

Despite the severity of the situation following the floods, the internationally recognized government only issued an urgent appeal to UNESCO and other heritage organizations to save Sanaa’s Old City, mainly blaming the Houthis for the collapse of buildings.

He added, “Sanaa is under the Houthis’ control. The government plays an indirect role in the city through coordination with UNESCO and international supporters. We hope that the UNESCO Emergency Fund will provide urgent support, as well as our ongoing communications with the European Union regarding restoration projects with the support of UNESCO.”

On Aug. 11, UNESCO announced the launch of a campaign to mobilize international funding and expertise in order to protect Yemen's cultural heritage.

Aqil Nassari, vice president of the Houthi-controlled General Organization for the Preservation of Historic Cities in Yemen, told Al-Monitor, “I hold the international community and the UN Security Council fully responsible for lacking serious determination to stop the aggression against Yemen, resolve the political crisis and lift the siege. This resulted in the deterioration of the infrastructure of all Yemeni cities, especially the historic ones.”

He said, “UNESCO’s ongoing support and interest contributed to saving and restoring 40 buildings in Sanaa’s Old City. Work is also underway in the cities of Zabid and Shibam Hadramout on several projects funded by UNESCO through the Social Fund for Development.”

Undoubtedly, the parties to the conflict in Yemen bear the bulk of the responsibility of this disaster that threatens Yemen’s history and heritage. However, the Saudi-led coalition, which has been leading a war in Yemen since 2015, and its international and regional backers, are also to be blamed for this catastrophe.

The Trump administration should not sell weapons to the UAE

Despite questionable and dangerous moves on both the foreign and domestic fronts, the UAE has largely escaped the kinds of criticism leveled against its Gulf ally, Saudi Arabia. That needs to change.

Although it has withdrawn most of its combat troops from Yemen, the UAE remains a member of the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen that has killed thousands of civilians in indiscriminate air strikes while provoking an unprecedented humanitarian crisis that has left more than 100,000 people dead and put millions more on the brink of famine. The UAE served as the backbone of the coalition’s ground war in Yemen and was involved with allied Yemeni militias in running a series of secret torture facilities there. It continues to arm, train and pay the salaries of militias that have engaged in systematic human rights abuses. The United States should refrain from selling the UAE arms of any kind until it stops stoking the conflict in Yemen and enters into a peace agreement to end the war.

There are other reasons to think twice about helping to stock the Emirati arsenal. The UAE has proved to be an unreliable steward of U.S.-supplied weaponry. In Yemen, U.S.-origin armored vehicles and small arms provided to UAE forces have ended up in the hands of extremist militias, and even with the Houthi opposition, in contravention of U.S. regulations. So far, the UAE has suffered no consequences for this irresponsible behavior. And in Libya, the UAE has been violating a United Nations embargo to supply arms to Khalifa Hifter’s forces, who have killed large numbers of civilians in their effort to overthrow the internationally-recognized government there.

The UAE’s internal human rights record is also cause for serious concern.

If the Trump administration does move forward with its plans, it is up to Congress to take action to block the deals, as it has done in the case of bomb sales to the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen – by William D. Hartung

Yemeni rial falls to lowest level against dollar in government-run regions

The Yemeni rial has fallen to its lowest level ever against the US dollar in the interim capital Aden and other regions run by the government.
One US dollar is currently buying 795 rials in these regions.
However, the rial is somehow stable in Houthi-run regions where it is trading at 600 to the dollar.
Before the war broke out in late 2014, it was trading at 250 to the dollar.
The current depreciation has pushed the prices of basic products to record highs in recent days as Yemen is continuing to depend on importing around 90% of its needs.

Deputy governor of Shabwa Mohammad Al-Salhi accused the pro-aggression government and the Islah party of plundering Shabwa's oil wealth.

According to Saba News Agency, Al-Salhi said that the oil smuggling mafia, with the participation of mercenary Mohammad Saleh bin Adiw, practiced systematic plundering of the oil wealth from the Uqla fields and the oil-producing sectors in Thahba and other regions on an ongoing basis without any accountability.

“The pro-aggression oil mafia gangs smuggle large quantities of crude oil from the Nashimiya port in Shabwa, at the rate of two ships carrying at least one million barrels per month, their revenues are confiscated and shared between the mercenaries of the aggression,” he added.

Yemen's grape farmers struggle to benefit from harvest amid fuel crisis, war

HOUTHIS’ WAR ON TERROR IN YEMEN (VIDEOS, MAPS)

The dramatic growth of ISIS and al-Qaeda influence in Yemen since the start of the Saudi intervention is also the factor mostly ignored by the ‘democratic international community’.

Therefore, the Houthis labeled by Saudi propaganda as “terrorists” took the situation in their own hands and started conducting operations against ISIS and al-Qaeda in central Yemen. The recent advances of the Houthis allowed them to expand these efforts and further. The most recent Houthi operation against ISIS and al-Qaeda was kicked off in the Yemeni province of al-Bayda in August.

On August 19, the Houthis announced that their forces had liberated 1,000km2 from ISIS and al-Qaeda cells in the district of Wald Rabi of al-Bayda province. According to the Houthi media wing, they neutralized over 250 terrorists, destroyed 12 camps and gatherings of the terrorists, and seized large quantities of weapons and explosive devices.

After August 18, the Houthis continued their offensive on ISIS and al-Qaeda cells in the province. According to them, terrorists receive support from foreign states, first of all Saudi Arabia. Earlier, there were multiple reports that members of Al-Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula were openly supporting Saudi-led forces in their attacks on the Houthis.

Why Saudi-led Aggression, Hadi’s Government Crying over Defeats of Al-Qaeda, ISIS?

Hadi's government is trying to justify the large presence of Al-Qaeda and ISIS terrorists, through some statements. Because their ridiculous statements could not conceal their crying over what happened to their black hands in Al-Bayda governorate. These Justifications exposed Hadi's government and Saudi-led aggression as the actual supporters of the terrorist organizations.

The aggression, its loyalists in Hadi's government and extremist groups have sought to mine several Yemeni governorates with terrorist. They enabled them to control enormous areas and districts and handed over the conditions of those areas to terrorize and kill people. The most recent of which was the murder and crucifixion of the dentist Mazhar Al-Yousfi in al-Silouma district in Al-Bayda. They also bombed a health center to deprive the people of benefiting from some treatment services provided to them.

The aggressive forces, militias, and groups loyal to them could not achieve victories on the battlefronts because they faced a large wall of blockade made up of the Army and Popular Committees that did not compromise on the country’s dignity and sovereignty.

The aggression and its loyalists gave the battle fronts either to the mercenaries who brought them from all over the world, or to mercenaries from inside and Takfiri terrorist groups.

Scenario of Houthi militia agreement with Al-Qaeda and ISIS in al-Bayda

As a result of the recent alliances with al-Qaeda and ISIS elements, the Iran-backed Houthi militia pushed hundreds of its elements to the outskirts of the Marib governorate in an attempt to achieve gains on the ground, but the reality of the violent battles there proved the failure of their attempts.

The Houthi coup militia and the terrorist elements have received devastating blows on the fronts of Al-Bayda governorate. This was revealed by the heavy losses the Houthi rebels are receiving there on a daily basis by the heroes of the armed forces and the popular resistance, as well as their daily funerals for hundreds of their elements including high ranked leaders.

Field sources confirm that dozens of prisoners of the Houthi forces have fallen into the hands of the armed forces. Those prisoners confirmed that hundreds of terrorists in the Al-Qaeda and ISIS are fighting alongside them, and some of them are captured.

The Yemeni political activist Baraa Shaiban revealed in a series of tweets about the recent cooperation that took place between the Houthi militias and the terrorist organizations ISIS and Al-Qaeda in the Qayfat Radaa area in Al-Bayda governorate.

Shaiban affirms that the Houthi militia’s alliances with terrorist elements come with the aim of encircling Marib governorate and the sites belonging to the army forces.

Southern Transitional Council publishes document revealing Saudi support to terrorist movements

Although Saudi Arabia has repeatedly denied its support for terrorism in Yemen’s occupied provinces, its disagreement with the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) has prompted the latter to reveal the significant support that Saudi Arabia provides to terrorist leaders.

Sources loyal to the STC leaked a document revealing that the commander of the Saudi -led aggression forces in Aden, Brigadier General Mujahid al-Otaibi, has given a permit to all military checkpoints in the provinces Aden, Abyan, Shabwah and Ma’rib, to live free passage to prominent al-Qaeda leader Saad bin Atef al-Awlaki, who is accompanied by the commander of the so-called General Transport Brigade of the Presidential Guard of Hadi, Amjad Khalid al-Qahtani.

US Isolationism Leads to Globalization of Conflicts and Endless Wars

In recent years, the common refrain that US involvement in Middle Eastern conflicts is costly, counterproductive, and morally and practically indefensible has taken hold in foreign policy circles and reflects the popular mindset that brought Donald Trump to power. However, closer examination of three of the sprawling conflicts plaguing the Middle East region today—Syria, Libya, and Yemen—shows that by abdicating regional responsibilities, the US has contributed to the globalization and perpetuation of “endless wars.”

In Yemen, too, there is a visible shift in Russian priorities, where it went from playing both sides of the conflict in an attempt to be seen as a neutral and respectable power broker to visibly supporting the Houthis through propaganda and information warfare tactics meant to demoralize the Arab Coalition. Moscow made that shift because it perceives the Coalition as having either lost or largely given up, and as the international community increasingly sees the Houthis as a legitimate governing authority in the absence of the Hadi government on the ground.

The Arab Coalition, in response to these developments, has concluded the negotiations that would fully implement a unifying Riyadh agreement, integrate the STC into the Hadi government, and finally reappoint a governor of Aden, which means the STC is putting aside separatism for the sake of combating the Houthis. The legitimate government is finally seen as making a physical claim to dominion and control in Yemen as a first step toward retaking military and political control of the country.

Despite these positive moves, it will be an uphill battle for the Hadi government and the Coalition to regain full legitimacy. None of these conflicts is likely to be resolved anytime soon, and they will all become costlier, more messy, and more lethal.

A significant reason for that is the belated, limited, or passive role of the United States in line with President Trump’s promises to his isolationist base of bringing an end to US involvement in “endless wars” abroad. The absence of the US as the “global policeman” or at least a powerbroker that is willing and able to put pressure on aggressors and wrongdoers to negotiate is taking its toll. Far from making the world a less dangerous place, America’s withdrawal from the international scene has given a green light to Turkey, Qatar, Iran, Russia, and their proxies and fellow travelers to expand and intensify conflict

Griffiths said last Wednesday that he held a “constructive meeting with Khaji and discussed views on efforts to reach a nationwide ceasefire in Yemen.

“The statement ignored the sabotage by Iran in Yemen and its role at destabilizing Yemen’s security and stability and turning it into a platform for targeting neighboring countries,” Al-Eryani said.

https://www.alsahwa-yemen.net/en/p-41632

My comment: What does he want? He wants to continue the conflict … forever? If Iran really is a warring party in Yemen (it is not), the best way to pull it out would be apeaceful solution. Keep in mind: “Make peace” only can happen with an enemy.

Moral Crimes : A Terrorist Houthi Act against Yemenis

Like other terrorist organizations, Al-Qaeda and Daesh, Houthi militia is committing forcible sexual assaults, abuse and rape in order to control society serve its agendas and spread immorality.

By practicing such crimes which are alien to the Yemeni society, the Houthi militia aims to dehumanize Yemenis and defame their reputation, documents obtained by 26 September revealed.

Following footsteps of terrorist groups, the Houthi militia forcible kidnap and rape women and children in Yemen.

Human rights activists told 26 September they were informed on several such cases in which Houthis forcibly film victims and threaten to post m it on media.

They said that senior militia leaders are supervising the act of dishonoring families, accusing their sons and daughters if committing immorality and adultery.

Intellectuals: Houthis employ false religious events for political benefits

A group of Yemeni academics, scholars and intellectuals said that the Houthis capitalize on false religious events to create a new reality that serves the Iranian agendas in the region.

This was highlighted during an online symposium held on Wednesday by the Yemeni Platform for Media and Studies.

Speakers of the symposium said that the Houthis are a sectarian group that uses false religious beliefs and the military force to impose its own ideology.

Muslim Brothers break ceasefire in Yemen with bombing in Abyan region

The Muslim Brothers in Yemen have broken the ceasefire that was reached in April.

Military sources have confirmed to Al-Ain that the bombing by the Muslim Brothers' militia on the fronts of Abyan was not a mere skirmish but a complete battle designed to put an end to the Riyadh Agreement signed last November. Sources indicate that Brotherhood reinforcements arrived on Tuesday night from Shabwa to Abyan with the aim of starting a military confrontation and bombing the positions of the southern forces.

The consultations to form a new Yemeni government as envisaged in the Riyadh Agreement signed between the "legitimacy" camp and the Southern Transition Council (STC) are clashing with the escalation operations instigated by the Muslim Brotherhood and the Qatari current in government in recent days,

The Yemeni conflict has shaken the whole region and several countries have tried to influence some of the parties for their own interests. Turkey, Iran and Qatar, together with the Muslim Brothers, have tried to support the Hutids, the country's Shiite militia, in their uprising against the government to take over some areas of the country, according to a report by The Arab Weekly.

Al-Qaeda has handed over positions to Houthi militia in Al-Bayda

Local sources in Al-Bayda province said al-Qaeda terrorist group has handed over controlled positions to the Houthi militia without any clashes between the two terrorist groups.

The same sources confirmed that the Houthi militia’s claims a few days ago lied by killing what they called terrorist elements affiliated with al-Qaeda and ISIS in Ould Rabie in Al-Bayda province.

The allegations are an attempt to deny the relationship and coordination between al-Qaeda, ISIS and the Houthi militia in the province, the sources added.

There is a military stalemate in Yemen. A larger offensive with greater successes and territorial gains for one side has been absent since the Saudi coalition's offensive against Hodeidah in 2018. Smaller offensives, constant mutual attacks and skirmishes killing fighters of both sides and causing victims among the civilian population are constant. The provinces of Hodeidah, Taiz, Al Bayda, Al Dhalea, the district of Nehm in the province of Sanaa, the provinces of Al Jawf, Marib, Hajjah and Saada are particularly affected.

Countdown begins for most decisive battle of Yemen war

The [Sanaa gov.] Yemeni army and Ansarullah popular forces have fully prepared for the beginning of the Ma'rib war, the most decisive phase of the five-year aggression imposed by the Saudi-led coalition against Yemen, military sources say.

In recent days, the Yemeni army backed by Ansarullah fighters have accomplished new victories in the course of their battle to liberate M'arib province, one of the last regions controlled by the Saudi-Emirati coalition in Yemen.

On Saturday, the Yemeni army managed to take control of the strategic Mas base, one of the most important bases of the aggressors on the outskirts of M'arib.

Now the Yemeni armed forces expect a “historic development” in the ongoing war once they capture one of the most important defensive lines of the Saudi-Emirati aggressors in southern and western parts of M'arib province, Lebanon’s al-Akhbar Newspaper reported.

Scared of the imminent defeat, the Saudi-led coalition has sent additional military reinforcements into M'arib.
