Houthis celebrate Prophet’s birthday with forcible donation

The Houthis began this week intensive campaign forcing commercial shops and companies to pay forcible donation for organizing a nationwide party in areas of their control to celebrate Prophet Mohmmed’ birthday.

Though the event is still almost two weeks far, the Houthis have already forced businesses and commercia shops to paint doors and exterior appearances green and light the streets with green.

Since they took control of Sana’a in late 2014, the Houthis use this debated religious event to impose certain political and cultural rituals that glorify the Houthis and their leader. They do so with the claim that their leader has a family connection to the Prophet Mohammed.

President Al-Mashat: US-Saudi Aggression Uses War Prisoners as Political Card

The head of Supreme Political Council, Mahdi Al-Mashat, affirmed keenness to free war prisoners in the US-Saudi aggression prisons.

"We feel for the suffering of the are prisoners and their families, so we were keen to make ultimate concessions for their release, but the problem is the other party," he said. He noted that "the pro US-Saudi Aggression party does not care about its prisoners, and they do not view their suffering and the suffering of their families with humanitarian eyes. They look at the prisoners' issue, purely as part of a political or military agenda. This view of the countries of aggression and their mercenaries is the biggest obstacle preventing the total release of the prisoners, as a humanitarian issue."

Houthi: US, Western Intelligence Services Behind Creation of Takfiri Terrorist Groups

The leader of Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement held the United States and Western intelligence services responsible for the creation of Takfiri terrorist groups, saying France's external intelligence agency plays a significant role in this regard.

“Takfiris are supported by the US, France and Western countries. They are the parties that have stood by Takfiris to target Muslims as they massacre them. The United States and its allies in Syria, Yemen, and other countries are supporting Takfiris, because they are using the extremists to tarnish the image of Islam. Western intelligence agencies, including the one in France, are involved in monitoring and supporting them,” Abdul-Malik al-Houthi said at a televised speech broadcast live from the Yemeni capital of Sana’a on Monday evening, presstv reported.

Houthi also warned that distortion and misinterpretation of Islamic teachings have created a deep rift among Muslims and posed serious problems to them.

“Enemies have used such deviation to insult the Holy Qur'an and Islam. There is no mercy or sympathy whatsoever in the Western civilization. They trample on [the rights of] human societies, deprive people of their freedom, plunder their wealth and occupy their lands, and then lecture others on human rights,” he highlighted.

The Ansarullah chief then questioned Western states’ respect for human rights in Yemen, Palestine and other Arab and Muslim countries, saying US President Donald “Trump is proud that he is ready to give Arab lands to the [Israeli] enemy and expropriate them as he did in the Syrian Golan Heights. What sort of civilization is this?”

Houthi went on to say that insulting Islam is allowed while criticizing Zionists is prohibited in France and whoever does so will be brought to trial.

“In the West, on the other hand, you are allowed to insult Islam and prophets, become atheists and insult God. But you are not permitted to insult Zionists and stand up to them,” the Yemeni Ansarullah leader pointed out.

ICRC accused of aiding Houthis to hide crimes

An official in the [Hadi] Yemeni government on Tuesday accused the International Committee for the Red Cross of aiding the Ansar Allah group to hide murders and crimes of torture through burying bodies of victims.
The group said on Monday it started burying unknown bodies in coordination with the ICRC. The bodies had been put in mortuaries for five years and could not be buried earlier because of the circumstances of the war, it said.
The government-run Saba news agency said the Houthis have buried 232 out of 750 bodies in the capital Sanaa and the provinces of Hodeidah and Dhamar.
Deputy human rights minister, Majid Fadhayel, wrote on Twitter: "I can't rule out these bodies belonged to civilian abductees killed under torture and that they had been mutilated so as to make it difficult to recognise them".

Houthis recruit 5.000 Yemeni children this year, government says

The [Hadi] Yemeni government on Monday accused the Houthi group of recruiting around 5.000 children during the past nine months.
General manager of international organisations at the human rights ministry, Esam Al-Shaeri, said the group has taken advantage of the disruption of the educational process to recruit children and send them to warfronts.
The group has turned many schools in regions under its control into military bases and weapons depots and forced teachers to adopt its slogans and joint warfronts, government reports revealed.
We have documented the use of 222 schools for military purposes, including 21 schools used for recruitment and ideological promotion, Al-Shaeri said.
Recently, social media activists circulated videos of tens of children recruited by the group. Some were from the marginalized segment, the black-skinned people.

Yemeni Judiciary begins full strike after members assaulted

The Judicial Club in the Yemeni capital Sana'a on Saturday announced a full strike at all the courts and prosecution offices, in protest of Houthi "systematic assaults" against the Judiciary.

The Club called on security authorities to arrest and bring to justice all those involved in these assaults against law lords, and those who helped them to divert justice course.
They also called for security protection for all the judges and courts, and for a clear, credible policy be put in place by the Houthis so that the Judiciary's requirements are met and solemnity is maintained.

Report: Organized crime rate is rising in occupied Yemeni southern provinces

A statistical report revealed on Tuesday that the rate of organized crime in the occupied Yemeni southern provinces has increased to the highest levels during the past 40 days.

The report issued by the [Sanaa gov.] Media Center for the Southern Provinces, of which the Yemeni News Agency (Saba) received a copy, stated that the crimes varied between assassinations, arrests, house raids and armed robbery of the rights and property of citizens by armed militias.

The total number of monitored crimes and violations that affected citizens of both sexes in the occupied southern provinces amounted to 162 crimes, including 30 assassinations and nine assassination attempts against some leaders of the parties to the conflict, according to the report.

The Media Center monitored 16 armed attacks on citizens in the provinces of Aden, Al-Dhalea and Socotra, pointing out that the crimes of armed robbery on citizens' lands and violations against public and private property amounted to 19 crimes and are increasing on a daily basis in light of the complicity of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) militias in the city of Aden.

Yemen: STC prevent Aden’s new police chief from assuming post

The security situation in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden has continued to deteriorate amid reports that the UAE-backed separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC) have prevented the incoming police chief of the city to assume his position.

Brigadier General Ahmed Al-Hamidi was appointed by the exiled but internationally-recognised Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi two months ago as Aden’s new police chief. The appointment was part of the Saudi initiative, the Riyadh Agreement, which seeks a power sharing arrangement between the Hadi government and the STC.

However, in spite of this, it has been reported that the STC have not allowed Al-Hamidi to assume his role until the future of the former police chief Shalal Shayea is determined. Concerned about Lasting Conflicts, Terrorism, Sectarian Tensions Plaguing Persian Gulf, Speakers in Security Council Stress Need for Coherent Approach to Collective Security

Calls for Yemen Ceasefire, Return to Iran Nuclear Programme among Main Points of Debate

Deeply concerned about long-term conflicts, terrorism and sectarian tension in the Persian Gulf, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, expert briefers and ministerial‑level representatives called for the entire region’s security to be addressed in a coherent manner during a Security Council video teleconference meeting today.

“The regional situation underscores the urgent need to work collectively to lower tensions and prevent conflict,” Mr. Guterres said as he opened the meeting entitled “Comprehensive review of the situation in the Persian Gulf region”, following a proposal by the Russian Federation, Council President for October, based on that country’s vision for collective security in the region outlined in its concept note (document S/2020/1013).

The meeting was presided over by Russian Federation Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Also briefing were Robert Malley, the President and CEO of the International Crisis Group, and Vitaly Naumkin, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“Given the complex and multifaceted challenges in the Persian Gulf region, it is important to reflect more deeply on how the international community — particularly the Security Council — can work in unison to promote peace and security in this vital part of the world,” Mr. Guterres said.

He expressed deep concern, in that context, over the situation in Yemen,

There are political options on the table to end the fighting and move to political dialogue. With famine looming and funding running out, the parties have to find the strength and courage to do this.”

TIME FOR A PROACTIVE APPROACH TO YEMEN’S CONFLICT

The ongoing crisis in Yemen today reflects a blatant and abject failure of the international community and regional actors to address the suffering of those trapped within the conflict. A major gap exists between humanitarian realities on the ground and rhetoric from major donors, particularly with respect to aid pledges and the flow of arms into the poor Gulf country. Such issues can be resolved but require true engagement and a proactive approach to addressing the needs of civilians in Yemen and ultimately peace.

While the situation in the country is grim, steps can be taken by the international community to coordinate a coherent response that saves lives. Such a response includes a combination of economic and diplomatic tools that can be applied to pressure the various groups involved in the conflict towards peace, while also aiding a desperate populace.

First, the international community will need to immediately address the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Yemen. Outside of humanitarian considerations, there are real risks to further destabilization in Yemen and beyond if this crisis is allowed to continue to spiral out of control. Upticks in violence due to a lack of basic resources will have spillover effects that will impact neighboring countries in the Gulf and Horn of Africa for decades. Yemen cannot be allowed to fall into a state of disrepair like Somalia, or to a lesser extent Iraq, as it will become a breeding ground for sustained extremism and violence.

The United Nations and its members should work to fill funding gaps outlined by the various UN agencies.

Further, states must remove political interests from humanitarian aid activities. This includes the United States, which ended aid dissemination to Houthi-controlled areas months ago. On top of this, Saudi Arabia and its coalition members must finally send the long-delayed aid they pledged at the beginning of the year.

Second, pressure must be applied to the Yemeni government, Houthi Movement, Southern Transition Council (STC), and other various warring internal parties towards peace and stability. On one hand, diplomatic pressure from security council members and major arms dealers designed to harm the reputation of Saudi Arabia and its coalition allies can project a unified front against their actions.

More importantly, it will also apply pressure on Mohammad Bin Salman and his strategy to modernize Saudi Arabia. MBS has worked to present a more tolerant Saudi Arabia to promote business investment and tourism via recent progressive policies. As I have previously argued, the use of diplomatic tools to harm the depiction of progress is impactful on Saudi Arabia and can influence decisions for a country looking to exit the prolonged conflict in the first place.

On the other hand, economic tools designed to threaten future weapons sales to the various Saudi-coalition members can promote genuine efforts to end the fighting. While it is unlikely that weapons sales to the Gulf states will completely end, they can be used to pressure foreign policy decisions towards a sustainable ceasefire and eventual peace in Yemen.

The benefits of such an approach can be immense if applied swiftly in coordination with other states, as it is difficult for a nation to shift military weapons systems and takes significant time. – by Alexander J. Langlois

Security Council Press Statement on Yemen

The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Vassily Nebenzia (Russian Federation):

The members of the Security Council reiterated that only an inclusive political solution can end the conflict in Yemen and emphasised their steadfast support for United Nations Special Envoy Martin Griffiths. They urged the parties to urgently endorse the United Nations-facilitated Joint Declaration proposals without delay in order to achieve an inclusive and sustainable peace. They stressed the need for urgent agreement to the Joint Declaration to enable negotiation of a comprehensive transitional agreement to end the conflict where power is shared among diverse political and social components. They underlined the importance of an inclusive political process allowing for the full and effective participation of women and youth. They called for the swift resumption of talks between the parties, in full engagement with the mediation led by the United Nations Special Envoy.

They reiterated their commitment to an inclusive Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned political process as set out in the relevant United Nations resolutions, including resolution 2216 (2015), as well as by the Gulf Cooperation Council initiative and its implementation mechanism and the outcome of the National Dialogue Conference. They reaffirmed the international community’s firm commitment to uphold Yemen’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity.

The members of the Security Council welcomed the announcement on 28 July of renewed implementation of the Riyadh Agreement and the mediation led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in this regard. They called on the Yemeni Government and Southern Transitional Council to fully implement the Riyadh Agreement urgently.

The members of the Security Council welcomed the agreement by the parties on 27 September to release 1,081 prisoners

Eyeing normalisation, Saudi Arabia joins the assault on Palestinian history

A Saudi-Emirati effort is underway to discredit Palestinian narratives of the conflict in favour of Israeli ones in order to pave the way for normalisation

Recently, Saudi and Emirati officials, prominent journalists and TV channels have gone on the offensive against the Palestinian people and leaders, and worst of all, against the Palestinian narrative, as they engage in efforts to falsify our history.

A prime example of this aired throughout last week on the Saudi state channel Al-Arabiya. Prominent Saudi prince, Bandar bin Sultan made a three-part appearance viciously attacking Palestinians and falsifying the entire history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in a meticulously choreographed talk that can only be seen as a prelude to Saudi Arabia's normalisation with Israel.

Bandar's central theme about Palestinians pivots on the infamous and grossly inaccurate Israeli propaganda line, that "the Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity."

This claim has been debunked time and again by Palestinians as well as international observers.

But the Saudi and Emirati campaign has not been limited to Bandar's appearance on Al-Arabiya.

Though Palestinians can barely believe it to be real, Saudi and Emirati TV channels have dedicated a significant portion of their airtime to attacking, slandering and demonising the Palestinians, falsifying their history, and whitewashing Israel.

Saudi Arabia appears to be laying the groundwork to follow in the UAE's steps. Rather than confining relations with Israel to diplomatic and elite circles - like Egypt and Jordan, for the sake of its narrow interests it is choosing to embrace Israel and its false narrative entirely, at the catastrophic expense of the Palestinians and their rights. – by Ali Adam

Saudi Arabia to Host Women’s Summit While Women Activists Sit Behind Bars

Until Activists Are Free, Talk of Reform Rings Hollow

Saudi Arabia will virtually host the Women20 Summit (W20) this week. During the event, over 80 women’s rights experts representing nonprofits, private companies, and academic institutions will discuss “realizing opportunities of the 21st century for all,” a catchphrase that belies the reality of many Saudi women’s rights activists today.
The Saudi government’s use of women’s rights to divert attention from other serious abuses is well-documented. Recent changes, including the right to drive and to travel without male guardian permission, might be significant, but do not hide the fact that some of the women who campaigned for these changes still languish behind bars.
W20 is an official engagement group of the G20 that makes sure gender considerations are reflected in world leaders’ agendas and policy commitments. Participants should be aware of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s (MBS’s) government’s crackdown against women’s rights activists. Beginning in May 2018, authorities arrested prominent activist Loujain al-Hathloul and several others, just weeks before the driving ban was lifted.
Al-Hathloul, well-known for her campaigning against the driving ban, was held incommunicado for three months following her arrest, and family members say that authorities subjected her to electric shocks, whippings, and sexual harassment in detention. Others have faced the same or similar abuse. None have been convicted.
While some have since been released, al-Hathloul, as well as Nassima al-Sadah, Samar Badawi, and Nouf Abdulaziz – who were arrested later that year – remain in detention. Those released risk immediate return to prison if they step out of line.

Saudi Arabia: Alleged Child Offenders Face Death Sentences

Reform to Curb Death Penalty for Children Leaves Glaring Exceptions

Saudi prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against eight Saudi men charged with protest-related crimes, some of which they allegedly committed as children, Human Rights Watch said today. The ongoing cases demonstrate critical gaps in a 2018 criminal justice reform curbing the death penalty for child offenders, leaving the eight men at risk of capital punishment.
Human Rights Watch obtained and analyzed the charge sheets for two group trials that included the eight men in 2019. Some of the crimes listed were allegedly committed while the men were between ages 14 and 17. One of the men, now 18, is charged for a nonviolent crime he allegedly committed at age 9. All eight men have been in pretrial detention for up to two years.
“Saudi spin doctors are marketing judicial reforms as progress while prosecutors appear to blatantly ignore them and carry on as usual,” said Michael Page, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “If Saudi Arabia is serious about reforming its criminal justice system, it should start by banning the death penalty against alleged child offenders in all cases.”

Saudi Arabia believes in ‘eventual normalisation’ with Israel

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Bin Farhan Al-Saud announced on Thursday that his country believes in “eventual normalisation” of ties with Israel, the Washington Institute for Near East Policy reported.

In a virtual meeting with the prince, he conveyed: “I believe that the focus now needs to be on getting the Palestinians and the Israelis back to the negotiating table. In the end, the only thing that can deliver a lasting peace and lasting stability is an agreement between the Palestinians and the Israelis.”

Was halten Sie davon?

Al-Rasheed: Am 23. Weitere neunzig Jahre?

Saudi Arabia restructures top religious and advisory bodies

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman issued a series of orders on Sunday restructuring the kingdom’s advisory Shura Council, the supreme court and the highest religious body.

The orders, carried on state media, appointed a new speaker and two deputies for the Shura Council, an influential advisory body which is due to start a new term this week. One of the deputies is a woman.

The king also ordered a “reformation” of the Council of Senior Scholars to be headed by Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz al-Sheikh, and appointed a new Supreme Court chief, Khaled bin Abdullah al-Luhaidan.

Fiancee of Khashoggi, human rights group sue Saudi crown prince in U.S.

The fiancee of slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and a human rights group that he founded filed a lawsuit in a U.S. court on Tuesday with allegations that Saudi Arabia’s crown prince ordered him killed.

The civil lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages against Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, also named more than 20 other Saudis as defendants. It coincides with complications in the U.S.-Saudi relationship over the 2018 slaying of Khashoggi, Riyadh’s human rights record, its role in Yemen’s civil war and other issues.

Cengiz and Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), a U.S.-based human rights group founded by Khashoggi, a legal resident of Virginia, filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. It names several of the crown prince’s aides and officials who were convicted in Saudi Arabia of the murder. The prosecution declared the Saudi case closed.

The lawsuit charged that MbS, his co-defendants and others carried out a plot to “permanently silence Mr. Khashoggi” no later than the summer of 2018 after discovering his “plans to utilize DAWN as a platform to espouse democratic reform and promote human rights.”

As US vote looms, Gulf powers count Trump blessings

As Trump trails in the polls against Joe Biden -- Obama's vice president who would be expected to shift back to a more conventional stance on human rights and arms deals -- the oil-rich region faces a delicate balancing act.

"The historic visit in May 2017 was the beginning of an exceptional relationship with a US president. It has opened many doors," a Gulf official close to political circles in the region told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"Decision makers here would logically want those doors to stay open, but they aren't blind," the official added. "They are also getting ready for the other scenario."

"Saudi Arabia and the UAE shared a perception that the Obama administration abandoned its traditional Gulf allies," said Elham Fakhro, senior analyst at the International Crisis Group.

"Saudi Arabia has vastly improved relations with the Trump administration, owing in part to its decision to impose the 'maximum pressure' campaign" against Iran, she said.

With Biden leading in the polls, now both the UAE and Saudi Arabia worry about a rollback on sanctions against Iran under a Democrat administration, said Fakhro.

Trump was "also more willing to ensure that arms sales to these states moved ahead swiftly," and a Biden administration would be unlikely to be as accommodating, she added.

"A Biden administration will come with a foreign policy team that is ready to re-examine the underlying tenets of the US-Saudi relationship and will embrace a hard-line position on the Saudi leadership," said Slim from the Middle East Institute.

"As long as MBS is the crown prince and if he were to ascend the throne in the next four years, US-Saudi relations will at best enter a deep freeze."

A Biden administration would most likely attempt to bring Iran back to the negotiating table and adopt more vocal rhetoric on human rights.

"It would be a difficult thing for the Saudis, but at the end of the day, they would have to live with it," said Middle East expert James Dorsey.

How Biden Flubbed Town Hall Foreign Policy Question

Toward the end of Joe Biden’s October 15 town hall session, a Trump supporter asked Biden the only foreign policy question of the night. "So peace is breaking out all over the world," the questioner claimed. "Our troops are coming home. Serbia is talking to Kosovo. And the Arabs and Israelis are talking peace, which I believe is a modern-day miracle, what’s going on. Does President Trump’s foreign policy deserve some credit?"

This question encapsulated all the smoke and mirrors that Trump has used to confuse the public and obscure his broken promises to end America’s wars, bring our troops home and build a more peaceful world. This was a fantastic opportunity for Biden to clarify the reality of Trump’s abysmal record and explain what he would do instead. But he didn’t. Instead he endorsed some of the most deceptive elements of Trump’s propaganda, dropped some clangers of his own and, in a classic Freudian slip, laid bare his own enduring commitment to American imperialism.

In response to the questioner’s designation of Israel’s deal with the UAE and Bahrain as a "modern-day miracle," Biden simply rolled over and said, "I complement the president on the deal with Israel." What he should have said was something like this:

Could Saudi Arabia And The UAE Throw The Election To Donald Trump?

Between now and Election Day, the possibility of the Saudis and Emiratis helping Trump to win a second term through election interference cannot be dismissed.

The national media has focused heavily on Russian, Chinese, and Iranian meddling in domestic politics. It has paid rather less attention to Arab governments’—America’s “friends”—interference in its internal affairs. “America’s adversaries are engaging in an all-out assault on American democracy,” writes Ben Freeman, Director of the Center for International Policy’s Foreign Influence Transparency Initiative. “Yet it is still abundantly clear that America’s friends are also influencing American democracy in ways antithetical to American interests.”

The Gulf States’ Attempts to Influence U.S. Elections

A look at changes to America’s foreign policy after Trump entered the Oval Office in January 2017 helps to explain why a number of Arab governments—chiefly Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, and Egypt—worry he might lose this year’s election to former Vice President Joe Biden.

To prevent this, the Saudi kingdom has made clear efforts to circulate misinformation via social media, both in Saudi Arabia and in the United States. On October 13, the Washington Post reported that the Saudi government propagated a false rumor that Mike Pompeo had released thousands of Hillary Clinton’s classified emails, and that these emails showed that the Obama administration secretly plotted to replace Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) with his deposed cousin, Mohammed bin Nayef (MBN). Washington Post columnist David Ignatius described the purpose of this deception as twofold: it gave MBS an excuse to prosecute MBN for treason, and, were Biden to win in November, it would give the Saudi government political cover to confront America on other issues without losing domestic support.

Nor is such influence confined to Saudi Arabia. In the United States, Twitter took down three separate misinformation operations run by the Saudis in 2019 and 2020, and Twitter and Facebook have also removed UAE-operated misinformation networks. Furthermore, throughout Trump’s presidency, both Riyadh and Abu Dhabi have invested more than $100 million into lobbying in Washington. Much of this lobbying has been focused on ensuring that Washington continues to support the Saudi-led coalition in its five-year war in Yemen, shielding the Saudi government from accountability for the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, attempting to tarnish Qatar’s international image, and advocating for increasingly aggressive policies against Saudi Arabia’s regional rival Iran.

Concerns about the two Gulf states’ interference in America’s political arena are not new. “Various witnesses affiliated with the Trump campaign have been questioned about their conversations with influential individuals from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Israel, according to people familiar with the probe,” the Daily Beast reported in December 2018.

What is clear is that Biden and a growing number of figures within the Democratic Party have moved in an increasingly anti-Saudi direction. The former Vice President has used strong language to denounce the leadership in Riyadh, even referring to the oil-rich kingdom as a “pariah” state.

Twitter's Unholy Alliance With The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia

Last November, the U.S. Department of Justice charged two former Twitter employees with acting as unregistered agents of Saudi Arabia.

Twitter purports "to power positive global change by fostering respectful conversations, creating deeper human connections and encouraging diverse interactions among individuals." But the company acts without transparency, explanation or accountability in far too many cases.

For better and worse, social media platforms have become our public squares. We cannot allow them to continue to behave as private kingdoms.

My name is Ali and I am a Saudi dissident.
Twenty-two years ago, the United States granted me political asylum. When my activism on behalf of women's rights, freedom of expression, and the right to dissent made it impossible for me to return to Saudi Arabia, America -- the land of the free -- took me in. Earlier this year, I became an American citizen.
But for the past two years, unbelievably, I've been fighting for my rights not in Saudi Arabia, but here in the United States. In May 2018, Twitter inexplicably closed my Arabic-language account, which had over 36,000 followers.
Twitter's actions are a matter of life and death for dissidents inside Saudi Arabia whose communications have been compromised by Twitter or its employees. The company must be held accountable for its actions.
Since Twitter banned my Arabic-language account, the Saudi government has arrested or disappeared people in the Kingdom who either followed me or contacted me via direct message on Twitter. While there is no way to know the exact number of those tortured, killed, or imprisoned by the Saudi regime, I know of dozens with whom I was in direct contact. I feel responsible.
Twitter has yet to explain why they closed the account and hasn't allowed me access to my account ever since. The company has refused to shed any light on the circumstances of my ban or whether the Saudis used information and messages connected to the account to crack down on fellow dissidents.
Last November, the U.S. Department of Justice charged two former Twitter employees with acting as unregistered agents of Saudi Arabia. The U.S. government accuses the two former employees, one of whom was a Saudi national, of using their employee credentials to gain unauthorized access to information about Twitter account holders and providing that information to officials of the Kingdom.
In an eerie echo of the recent hacks of Joe Biden, Elon Musk and others, one of the accused in that case was responsible for managing high-profile Twitter users in the Middle East, and so had access to the accounts of prominent figures in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and elsewhere. That case has received comparatively little media attention -- if it had, this summer's hacks in the United States would have been seen as part of a pattern.

Russia has blasted the United States for adopting yet another “wrong approach” in the wake of new Iran-related sanctions targeting Chinese companies, stressing that Moscow will keep up its business ties with Tehran despite such bans.

“Wrong approach again… The United States playing a ‘world policeman,’ substituting the UN Security Council is an unwelcome role,” Deputy Russian Ambassador to the UN Dmitry Polyanskiy tweeted on Monday.

UN arms embargoes on Iran expire despite US objections

A decade-long U.N. arms embargo on Iran that barred it from purchasing foreign weapons like tanks and fighter jets expired Sunday as planned under its nuclear deal with world powers, despite objections from the United States, which insists the ban remains in place.

While Iran says it plans no “buying spree,” it can now in theory purchase weapons to upgrade military armaments dating back to before its 1979 Islamic Revolution and sell its own locally produced gear abroad.

In practice, however, Iran’s economy remains crippled by broad-reaching U.S. sanctions, and other nations may avoid arms deals with Tehran for fear of American financial retaliation. The Trump administration has warned that any sales of weapons to Iran or exports from Iran will be penalized.

Iran declares official termination of UN arms embargo

Iran’s Foreign Ministry says the UN Security Council’s arms restrictions against Tehran have all been terminated in defiance of the United States’ efforts.

“As of today [October 18, 2020], all restrictions on the transfer of arms, related activities and financial services to and from the Islamic Republic of Iran, and all prohibitions regarding the entry into or transit through territories of the United Nations member states previously imposed on a number of Iranian citizens and military officials, are all automatically terminated,” a statement by the Foreign Ministry said.

According to Press TV, the longstanding UN ban on the sale of arms from/to Iran is terminated under the terms of the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 that blessed the 2015 nuclear deal between the Islamic Republic and world powers.

US Seized Iranian Gasoline, But Legal Battle Ensues on If They Can Sell It

Justice Dept argued that the gas belonged to Revolutionary Guards, was bound for Venezuela

Described by the Justice Department as the largest fuel shipment from Iran ever taken, the US is slowly shipping the gasoline up the coast to New Jersey. Officials want to sell it, but that’s a legal issue that the Justice Department has yet to sort out.
Four gasoline tankers were seized by the US, to prevent delivery to Venezuela. The way the administration figures it, it’s Iranian gas, so it belongs to the Revolutionary Guards, which gives them a license to take it and sell it.
The actual owners of the gasoline disagree, saying they own the gasoline, not Iran, and that the US can’t just take it. The US has just taken it, to be clear, but they have to get through court to be allowed to sell it.
Evidence of where the gas came from and where it’s going doesn’t seem cut and dried, and the US seems to have bet on no one challenging this if they made the accusation publicly. The legal battle could be expensive and likely will cost more than the gasoline is worth, but those who seized it got to brag about the biggest ever seizure for awhile.

A Secret U.S. Rescue in Yemen Played a Role in Mideast Peace Deal

The U.S. helped rescue U.A.E. soldiers after a 2017 helicopter crash, building a reservoir of trust that helped lead to recent agreement

On Aug. 11, 2017, a United Arab Emirates helicopter filled with soldiers taking part in an offensive against al Qaeda militants crashed in Yemen, leaving three soldiers dead and seven seriously wounded, including a young member of the royal family.

As Emirati leaders scrambled to rescue their soldiers, they turned to the U.S. and asked America to organize an urgent rescue mission.

In a matter of hours, based on U.S. navy officers, American particular operations forces rushed to avoid wasting the Emirati royal and the opposite troopers. In ways in which could not have been anticipated on the time, the weird navy mission helped pave the way in which three years later for the Israel-U.A.E. peace deal that’s reshaping the Center East.

Till now, the U.A.E. and U.S. navy have by no means acknowledged that American forces saved the younger royal that day.

The rescue mission made Gen. Correa one thing of a hero amongst Emirati leaders, together with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan, the nation’s ruler, who can also be uncle and father-in-law of the wounded soldier saved by the Individuals that day.

Gen. Correa’s shut relationship with the Emirati leaders grew to become an unanticipated asset within the Trump administration’s secret talks between Israel and the U.A.E. that led to the historic peace offers—often known as the Abraham Accords—signed last month on the White Home.

Officers from the varied nations acknowledged the notable behind-the-scenes position performed by Gen. Correa. On the White Home, earlier than the Sept. 15 signing ceremony, based on individuals in attendance, the Emirati international minister—who’s the crown prince’s youthful brother and an uncle to the soldier America saved in 2017—pointed to Gen. Correa and instructed President Trump: “That normal is a part of my household.”

“This could not have occurred with out him,” mentioned Abdullah bin Zayed al Nahyan.

That was a sense shared by the White Home group led by Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and the White Home level man on Center East coverage. Whereas Mr. Kushner and his deputy, Avi Berkowitz, did a lot of the heavy diplomatic lifting, they each mentioned Gen. Correa performed a key position in securing the deal.

Gen. Correa was at his residence in Abu Dhabi in 2017 when he acquired a name that the Emirati helicopter had gone down in Yemen whereas finishing up a counterterrorism mission.

Formally, Emirati officers mentioned mechanical issues introduced down the helicopter. However U.S. officers have mentioned the trigger was unclear, leaving open the chance it was shot down by militants in Yemen.

Three Emirati troopers had been killed. Zayed bin Hamdan al Nahyan, a 27-year-old nephew and son-in-law to the nation’s crown prince, was one in all seven others significantly injured. U.S. officers quickly discovered that the younger Emirati royal was amongst these being rescued.

Two American Ospreys carried a particular operations forces medical group to the helicopter crash web site in Yemen. The American medical group flew the seven injured troopers to the united statesBataan, a U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship within the Gulf of Aden, mentioned Capt. Invoice City, spokesman for U.S. Central Command. One soldier died on the way in which to the ship as a surgeon on the Osprey revived a second Emirati whose coronary heart stopped, mentioned Capt. City.

Yemen: Military Intervention

Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office written question – answered on 19th October 2020.

Q: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what discussions he has had with his Saudi Arabian counterpart on ensuring that country (a) records and (b) retains data on the (i) locations and (ii) types of explosive ordnance they have used in Yemen.

James Cleverly, Minister of State, Foreign Office: The UK regularly raises the importance of International Humanitarian Law and of conducting thorough and conclusive investigations into alleged violations with Saudi Arabia, including at senior levels. We share UK experience of best practice for conducting air operations in accordance with acceptable international norms. This includes the provision of training to the Joint Incident Assessment Team (JIAT) on best practice for investigating alleged violations. We have supported the development of the JIAT's investigations into allegations and continue to urge Saudi Arabia to ensure findings from its investigations are published clearly and its recommendations, including payment of compensation and changes to procedures, are properly implemented.

Lawmakers urge EU to downgrade presence at Saudi-hosted G20

Sixty-five European lawmakers have signed a letter calling for the European Union (EU) to downgrade its attendance at next month's G20 summit in Riyadh over human rights concerns, according to a document released on Monday.

The letter signed by European Parliament members follows a wide-ranging resolution passed earlier this month that also appealed for the downgrade to "avoid legitimising impunity for human rights violations" in Saudi Arabia, the current G20 president.

A downgrade would imply Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, do not take part in the virtual summit if they heed the call of lawmakers.

Trump says Sudan to be removed from terrorism list

President Donald Trump on Monday said Sudan will be removed from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism if it follows through on its pledge to pay $335 million to American terror victims and their families, but some hurt in the attacks weren’t happy with the deal.

The move would open the door for the African country to get international loans and aid needed to revive its battered economy and rescue the country’s transition to democracy.

Delisting Sudan from the state sponsors blacklist is a key incentive for the Sudanese government to normalize relations with Israel. Trump’s announcement came after Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin traveled to Bahrain to cement the Gulf state’s recognition of the Jewish state.

Mud-brick palace is Yemen's latest heritage site facing disaster

Yemen's Seiyun Palace, one of the world's largest mud-brick structures, has become the war-torn country's latest heritage site facing the risk of collapse as heavy rains and years of neglect take their toll.

The deterioration of the bright white building, reminiscent of a giant sandcastle with rounded turrets on its corners, reflects Yemen's downward spiral since 2014, when Iran-backed Huthi rebels began battling the government.

A Saudi-led coalition intervened in support of the government in 2015.

Authorities have struggled to secure funds to maintain important sites such as the palace, now a museum, in the city of Seiyun in central Hadramawt province.

The building has fallen into disrepair, making it vulnerable to floods that have hit the country in recent months.

Abdullah Barmada, an engineer who specialises in the restoration of historical buildings, appealed for international assistance to save the structure.

"It is dangerous and, if not quickly restored, it is at risk of collapsing," Barmada said. (photos)

[Hadi] Yemeni gov't tells UNSC Iran appointing envoy enables Houthis to act as UN member state

By sending an ambassador to Sana'a, Iran would enable the Houthis to act in the name of Yemen Republic as a state member in the United Nations, the Yemeni UN-recognized government said Monday.
This blatantly affirms Iran's intentions towards Yemen, the government added in a letter sent to the UN Security Council, citing the remarks of spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry, who said Tehran sent its envoy to Sana'a.
Iran smuggled one of its elements to the Republic of Yemen and appointed him as an ambassador for Houthis, in flagrant violation of the international law and UNSC resolutions, according to the government-run Saba News Agency.
The Yemeni government dismissed Iran's sending an ambassador to Sana'a as a violation of its international commitments under the UN Charter, Vienna treaties on diplomatic relations and UNSC Resolution 2216 for 2015.

Iran’s new ambassador to Sanaa

The announcement by Iran that it has sent a plenipotentiary ambassador to Sanaa reveals a shift in its stance on Yemen, towards military approaches over diplomacy

The 8Hadi gov.] Yemeni information minister added that, according to available intel, Hassan Eyrlou was a major Iranian religious leader and a military officer who had commanded training exercises on anti-aircraft weapons and had been responsible for the training of terrorist activists and Hizbullah elements in the Yahunar military camp in Karaj, on the outskirts of Tehran. In Al-Eryani’s opinion, the appointment of the new Iranian ambassador to the Houthis added nothing of note to the relationship between Tehran and the Houthis, or to the course of the battle. It merely affirmed that Iran was fully responsible for the Houthi coup and dictated the Houthi militia’s political and military decisions, he said.

It merely affirmed that Iran was fully responsible for the Houthi coup and dictated the Houthi militia’s political and military decisions, he said.

Other observers were not surprised by Eyrlou’s appearance in Sanaa. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have been infiltrating into Yemen since the outset of the Houthi coup, so the arrival of one more officer was nothing out of the ordinary.

The appointment of an ambassador to Sanaa marks the beginning of a new phase in Tehran’s relations with the Ansar Allah movement, especially given Eyrlou’s IRGC background and his “plenipotentiary” authorities.

Tehran “sent over a governor general, not an ambassador”, scoffed many Yemenis, angered by this latest move in support of the illegitimate government in Sanaa.

The appointment of a “plenipotentiary and extraordinary” ambassador to Yemen now signals that the IRGC has decided to take the driver’s seat in Tehran’s handling of the Yemeni question.

However, Eyrlou will have other tasks that Iranian ambassadors generally perform. One is to build pro-Iranian espionage networks in Yemen. Another is to promote pro-Houthi and pro-Iranian propaganda. This is often conveyed through Shia religious activities, which have been on the rise recently and are likely to increase.

Biden’s Proposed Middle East Policy Would End Any Prospect for Saudi-Israeli Normalization

It is Washington’s strong support for Saudi Arabia’s security needs, clear stance against Iran’s pursuit of regional hegemony, support for Saudi actions in Yemen, and willingness to set aside its criticism of Riyadh’s domestic policies that have allowed for even the possibility of a formal shift in the kingdom’s stance on Israel. But Joe Biden has made clear that if elected, he intends to reverse all those policies. Such changes, along with his preemptive rejection of Israel’s extension of sovereignty to any new territory, would undermine any prospect that exists for normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Biden foreign policy advisor Jake Sullivan has argued that the US “should absolutely be removing all forms of support for the continuing hostilities in Yemen” as well as adopting a greater willingness to pressure Riyadh on its domestic human rights shortcomings. Biden himself recently penned an op-ed outlining his plan for a renewed détente with Tehran.

The above proposals would constitute drastic changes to the current policy. Taken as a whole, Biden’s program is essentially that the US administration should say to Muhammad bin Salman: “Look, we’re not going to sell you any more missiles for your operations against Iran’s proxies in Yemen. We’re abandoning the maximum pressure policy against Iran and instead are going to pursue a more conciliatory relationship with your greatest rival and most serious geopolitical threat

Yemen [Hadi gov.] Denounces Appointment of Iranian ‘Military Ruler’ in Sanaa

The Yemeni government warned that Iran intends to send weapons and military expertise to the Houthi group, with its recent appointment of a “military ruler” as Tehran's ambassador to Sanaa.

Yemeni Minister of Information Muamar al-Iryani told Asharq Al-Awsat that Tehran’s appointment of a new ambassador to the Houthi militia in Sanaa is a blatant violation of the international norms and agreements.

He warned that this reaffirms Iran's political and army support to the coup led by the Houthi militias.

Yemen’s Saba News Agency quoted Iryani as saying that Tehran is sending to Sanaa an officer who worked under Qasem Sulaimani, and made recent statements on plans to sell weapons to the Houthis.

According to the information, the new appointee is a top commander who specializes in anti-crafts weapons and also trains elements, said the Minister.

Since its establishment on December 2, 1971 by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the United Arab Emirates has adopted a rational foreign policy based on the principles and charter of the United Nations. It has a stance that abides by the laws and customs on which international legitimacy is based. This consistent approach has always characterised the UAE’s relations with all countries of the world. Therefore, the recent speech delivered by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to the United Nations General Assembly, expressed the trends that represent the basic framework for Emirati diplomacy, which is characterised by a tremendous extent of dynamism, effectiveness and the ability to move outside the frameworks of traditionalism and stereotyping.

YEMEN. Breeding is ending in the interior where infestations have declined due to control operations, migration, no significant rains for the past month and drying conditions; hence, only a few late-instar hopper bands remain near Al Hazm. A few swarms from the interior may appear on the southern coast. More immature adult groups and swarms are forming on the northern Red Sea coastal near Suq Abs from local breeding.
