Houthi leader hints at militia's willingness for too long war

A senior militant in the Shiit terrorist militia of Houthis has hinted that his militia is willing to fight for 40 or 50 years.

"I don't know if the (Arab) Coalition is capable of continuing its aggression on us for 40 or 50 years to come?," said militia’s “Deputy Foreign Minister” Hussein Al-Ezzi in a tweet on Saturday in a revelation of the militia's aggressive intent but in defensive wording.

"Yes, they may be able to, but what we are certain about is that in all circumstances, they can't force us into surrender, fatigue or boredom as we defend our country and people," he said.

Houthis Launch Campaign to Recruit Dozens of Prisoners in Ibb

The Iran-backed Houthi militias launched recruitment campaigns among Ibb prisoners in their efforts to compensate for the shortage of their fighters, according to well-informed sources.

The sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that top Houthi leaders are accused of smuggling dozens of the group's prisoners from Ibb central prison, some of whom committed serious crimes.

Houthi leader Mohammad al-Dailami directed Judge Abdullah al-Sanea to release dozens of the group's prisoners, who will then be trained to join the ranks.

Dailami, Houthi Attorney General, issued the directives based on previous orders from the head of the Houthi Supreme Political Council, Mahdi al-Mashat, urging him to carry out a campaign to recruit prisoners.

The sources stated that pro-militia agents in Ibb managed to release over 100 prisoners during their field visits over the past ten days to the central prison and other Houthi detention centers in the governorate.

The detainees were forced to agree to join the ranks of the group and undergo training.

Soleiman Muhammad, an alias for a relative of detainees in Ibb central prison, told Asharq Al-Awsat that Houthi leaders concluded deals with the families of many prisoners, including his, to release their relatives in exchange for financial ransoms.

He stated that his family reluctantly agreed to pay YR250,000 to release two of his brothers, 26 and 32, who had been detained for months on charges of criticizing the group's corruption and crime.

The group, Iran's ally in Yemen, previously pardoned hundreds of prisoners and detainees in Ibb in exchange for joining the group.

Houthi court sentences 11 Yemenis to death, including two women and professor of international law

A Houthi-controlled court sentenced on Saturday 11 Yemenis to death, including two women and a professor of international law at Sanaa University, on alleged charges of cooperation with “the enemy” and passing information to a “hostile foreign country,” multiple media outlets reported.

Ghazi added that a non-judicial authority pressured some of the defendants to withdraw their lawyers’ powers of attorney provided that they be released with a presidential pardon at a later time, which turned out to be an empty promise.

The convicted 11 Yemenis, were charged with working within a cell linked to Ammar Afash, a former head of the Yemeni National Security Agency and the nephew of the late President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Houthis to sack 8000 teachers

The Houthi-run Ministry of Education has decided to sack about 8000 teachers from the education sector, in an attempt to have full control of the education system in areas under the control of Houthi rebels.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the so-called Education Office has approved the dismissal of 5000 teachers in the rebel-held capital, Sana’a, and 3000 more from other provinces.

The Houthi-controlled Education Office believes that the teachers in question must be sacked from the education sector for not doing their duty.

Super-rich Houthi warlords control 60% of oil market in Yemen including government territories

The Houthi militia's warlords have exploited power in their areas of control to sell oil products in the black markets at prohibitively high prices despite the fact they buy it at the low official prices, Alquds Al-Arabi news website reported.

From the very beginning of the Yemen coup, the warlords worked in oil trade and dominated over the public oil institutions and created fuel distribution companies in the black market.

Numerous economic sources told the website that trading in oil products during the war generated a lavish affluence for the top leaders of the Houthi group as they used the de facto power in their areas of control to sell oil products in the black market at too high prices.

"The companies affiliated to the Houthi leaders control now around 60% of the oil market in the entire Yemen including in the government-held territories," an economic source told the website. read more from Alquds Al-Arabi

Yemeni diplomats reach out directly to Ma’rib inhabitants to challenge Saudis and start negotiations

Member of the Yemeni national diplomatic delegation, Abdul-Malik al-Ajri, called for open direct negotiations with the people and sheikhs of Ma’rib province.

Al-Ajri said on Twitter that this move comes after the Saudi-backed exiled Hadi puppet government rejected the peace initiative presented by the Leader of the Revolution, Sayyid Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, to bring peace to the province.

He indicated that the rejection of the initiative by Islah Party forces is done because they want to preserve Ma’rib as a special resource for financing the party and enriching its leaders.

The Yemeni diplomatic outreach now goes directly to the people and tribes of Ma’rib, asking them to negotiate with the National Salvation Government, regardless of the dictates of Riyadh and the exiled Hadi administration

Southern inclusivity is key to Yemen’s chances for lasting peace

A reinvigorated international approach to Yemen is possible. The current architecture for advancing a negotiated peace is being challenged by both international and local developments. The protracted nature of the conflict, the risk that it could worsen, and local political developments over the past two years necessitate a recalibration of the peace process, informed by realities on the ground, the urgent needs of the population, and the demand for security. Evolving coalition priorities, renewed U.S. engagement, and the appointment of a new U.N. special envoy may be an opportunity to advance conflict resolution. Achieving greater unity among southern actors will be key to the success of national-level talks and is urgently needed to prevent a further descent into violence, extremism, and humanitarian catastrophe.

The U.N.-led peace process is largely based on U.N. Security Council Resolution 2216, which created a ROYG-Houthi dichotomy that seems increasingly anachronistic. This dichotomy has guided the process, but in reality it overlooks a number of other influential military and political actors, notably in the southern governorates. Important parties to the conflict have had limited engagement in direct national-level negotiations since 2016.

The Riyadh Agreement, signed in 2019 between the ROYG and the Southern Transitional Council (STC), was intended to address this deficit by allowing the integration of some southern political actors onto the national stage. The STC, which controls the temporary capital Aden and parts of the southern governorates, was the government’s counterpart in that agreement.

But implementation of the agreement has faced many challenges, in particular pertaining to security arrangements, the handover of critical military installations, and the appointment of mutually acceptable government officials. This has resulted in rising tensions on the ground between ROYG and STC-affiliated forces, which has led to violence. With their opponents so divided, the Houthis have little incentive to pursue a negotiated solution.

Nevertheless, the principles of the Riyadh Agreement remain relevant to the future of a solution in Yemen. One of its main outcomes has been to mandate the STC's participation in future national-level negotiations with the Houthis, as part of the governmental delegation.

Achieving greater unity among southern powerbrokers will be difficult, but it is not impossible. Progress will depend upon a process that enjoys the confidence of both major players, that is seen as responsive to the populations’ immediate needs, and that has the support of key regional actors.

Continuing to disregard the concerns of southern Yemenis will complicate and could undermine ongoing peace efforts, rather than contribute to a solution. And failure to address it increases the chances of further conflict in the south, with all the consequences that will have, including opportunities for extremist actors.

The STC is the main organization set to join in the official delegation at national-level talks. But Yemenis from across the eight southern governorates express varying degrees of support for a number of other political organizations that seek to represent them. These organizations cover a wide array of socio-economic and political demands and stand for a variety of interests and constituencies, ranging from governorate-level, localized, and tribal concerns to the national level.

The proliferation of political and military actors across the south of Yemen has led to increased tensions on the ground between the various groups, as well as with the government. Tensions have often spiraled into open conflict with violence spilling over into areas of relative stability, hampering efforts to address the dire humanitarian situation.

It is critical that southerners break down barriers and coalesce around a set of shared principles within the framework of U.N. reference points, as well as ongoing international and regional efforts.

Tensions run high in eastern Yemen as 400 militants group in gas liquefaction facility

Tensions are getting higher in the eastern Yemeni province of Shabwa as 400 separatist militants have reportedly gathered in the gas liquefaction and export facility of Balhaf instead of evacuating it as per the calls of the Yemeni government.

Local sources said the Yemeni army "set up checkpoints near the gate of Balhaf" the country's biggest industrial project, on Sunday, a couple of days after it learnt that the UAE forces occupying the facility have amassed 400 Shabwani Elite militiamen and carried out military training with heavy live ammunition close to the sensitive facility.

After the local governor Mohammed Bin Edeiw last week called on Emirati forces and UAE-backed local Southern Transitional Council militia to end the occupation and militarization of the facility, the UAE forces responded with more amassing of mercenaries, weapons and threat messages with warplane flights.

A UAE military officer reportedly threatened on Friday: "We will not evacuate it even if we totally burn it down"

A statement by the government's local Security Committee on Saturday called on all "the armed recruits in Bahaf gas facility to quickly evacuate the facility to save their lives."

Around 15 UAE mercenaries reported missing in Shabwah province

Tribal sources in Shabwah on Sunday said that contact with about 15 recruits in the UAE-backed militias stationed in the Balhaf facility, have disappeared, likely to have been kidnapped, Yemen News Portal reported.

The recruits were stationed on mobile patrols in the vicinity of the Balhaf facility, when they disappeared altogether, the sources said.

This follows tensions in the oil province after UAE forces confiscated weapons belonging to the Islah Party factions.

Activists have reported arrests of dozens of members of the so-called Shabwah Elite, who are guarding UAE forces in Balhaf in the Ayn Bamabad area, a few kilometers from the Balhaf gate where UAE forces are stationed.

These arrests are likely retaliatory done by Islah miltias, in response to the seizure of arms shipments en route to Shabwah from the Somali coast, where a Turkish base is located.

The arrests followed the withdrawal of Islah factions from the Balhaf area, after they threatened to storm the facility.

They accused the Muslim Brotherhood-linked authorities of torturing all the detainees, in particular the political opponents, calling on the Saudi-led Arab Coalition to stop the abuses, redress the injustices and human rights violations and to hold perpetrators to account.

Former Official: Britain Sets Up Cells in Yemen’s Mahra to Spy on Tribal Leaders, Resistance Fighters

The former deputy governor of Yemen’s Eastern province of Al-Mahra said British forces have been recruiting some local people to use them for monitoring and spying on institutions, tribal leaders and resistance groups in the region.

Speaking at a press conference in the provincial capital city of Al-Ghaydah on Wednesday, Ali bin Salem Al-Huraizy said a group of British troops have already arrived in Mahra to prepare the ground for the deployment of more forces in the future, presstv reported.

He warned the British government of the consequences of the move, citing Britain's defeat after the occupation of Southern Yemen and its humiliating expulsion.

Huraizy highlighted that Britain has been setting up spy cells and establishing intelligence channels in Al-Mahra province ever since its special forces were stationed there earlier this month.

He said the British-affiliated teams are monitoring and spying on institutions, tribal leaders and resistance groups in Al-Mahra, noting that the overflights of unmanned aerial vehicles over districts in the province have really irritated the locals.

Huraizy said Saudi forces, ever since their deployment in Al-Mahra in November 2017, have worked to bring in other foreign forces.

Israeli military officers reported to be stationed in occupied Yemeni province of Mahrah

The head of the Mahrah sit-in protest committee, Sheikh Ali Salem al-Harizi, has confirmed on Thursday the presence of Israeli military officers in Mahra province, east of Yemen.

This came during a news conference held by sheikhs of Mahrah to discuss the repercussions against continued foreign presence, and preparations to confront it in the governorates of Mahrah and Socotra.

Al-Harizi said: “Three Israeli enemy officers are present along with the British occupation forces at al-Ghaydah Airport, and we know that they want to attack us.”

For his part, Issa bin Yaqut, one of Socotra’s sheikhs, confirmed that the Israeli forces present on al-Ghaydah airport came to work for foreign intelligence services in the governorates of Mahrah and Socotra, under the cover of tourism.

The Balhaf gas plant should be a lifeblood for Yemeni people at such a time, says Shabwa governor

The biggest industrial project in Yemen has been stalled and used as a military base by the United Arab Emirates for years despite Yemen's catastrophic economic and humanitarian crisis and the need for hard currency to stop the depreciation of the country's currency.

Over the past years, Governor Mohammed Bin Edeiw - as other Yemeni officials and activists - has called on the UAE several times to de-militarize it and let the government resume exporting gas.

Mahrah protest leader reveals British espionage plot in Yemeni province

The head of the peaceful sit-in committee in Mahrah province, sheikh Ali Salem al-Harizi, revealed that British forces have recruited spies and opened intelligence channels in the governorate.

Al-Harizi affirmed, in a news conference held on Wednesday in the city of al-Ghaydah, that Saudi forces are the cornerstone in getting foreign forces to arrive at the province.

He explained that the Saudi forces have formed militias from Mahrah tribes, and have worked to train and finance them to confront the people of the governorate, accusing Saudi Arabia of insulting Mahrah’s tribes.

The statement indicated that “the Saudi regime is waging a war against the Yemenis, the latest act of which was the expulsion of Yemeni expatriates in Saudi cities.”

Al-Harizi called on Great Britain to “be aware of all the experiences of struggle [of the people of Mahrah] against occupation and occupiers,” pointing out that in 2019, American soldiers left Mahrah and were replaced by British forces.

Mass resignations of public officials in Hadhramaut in protest against UAE occupation

A number of civil service officials in the occupied Yemeni province of Hadhramaut have submitted their collective resignations.

Director of Civil Service in Hadramout coast, Hussein Ali Ahmed al-Samin, submitted his resignation to the Governor, Faraj Al-Bahsani, due to “regionalist practices.”

Al-Samin referred to the regionalism practiced by the Minister of Civil Service in the Hadi puppet government, Abdul-Nasser Al-Wali, who is affiliated with the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC).

In his resignation, al-Samin claimed that al-Wali had led a smear campaign to oust him for regional reasons and personal interests.

An Integrated, Multi-Level Approach to Peacebuilding in Yemen

This article highlights the Berghof Foundation’s programme in Yemen, especially its local approach to support the Yemeni peace process.

The Berghof Foundation, in collaboration with the Political Development Forum – Yemen (PDF-Yemen), have been supporting the peace process in Yemen since 2021 at the request of the NDC. The two organisations aim at supporting Yemeni actors from national to local level to address the root causes and contributing factors. Their approach builds different actors’ and parties’ technical, strategic and process-related capacity to continue negotiating to find a peaceful solution. The multi-level capacity-building and knowledge-sharing work is implemented in the framework of three thematic workstreams: supporting Yemeni-led inclusive political dialogue on the peace process at national, regional and local levels, supporting inclusive local governance and more effective service provision and improving citizens’ sense of safety and fostering a relationship of trust and cooperation between citizens and local security forces.

BRIEFING TO UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL BY ASSISTANT SECRETARY-GENERAL AT THE DEPARTMENTS OF POLITICAL AND PEACEBUILDING AFFAIRS, AND PEACE OPERATIONS, MOHAMED KHIARI

Unfortunately, since the last Council session on Yemen there has been no further progress in the UN’s ongoing efforts to reach an agreement based on the four-point plan presented to the parties, which is comprised of: a nationwide ceasefire, the re-opening of Sana’a airport, the easing of restrictions on the flow of fuel and other commodities through Hudaydah port, and the resumption of face-to-face political negotiations between the Yemeni parties.

The Houthis have continued to condition the resumption of their participation in the political process on the opening of Hudaydah ports and Sana’a airport, as well as on the ending of what they call the “aggression and occupation”. On the occasion of Eid al-Adha, the Head of the Houthi Supreme Political Council reiterated this stance.

Negotiations facilitated by Saudi Arabia on the Riyadh Agreement – which were focused on the return of the Prime Minister and other ministers to Aden have yet to resume following the Eid break in July. No date has been set for recommencing these efforts. Timely progress on implementation of the Riyadh Agreement remains vital to address the tensi

Military activity in Yemen continues to ebb and flow.

The difficult economic situation is palpable throughout the country.

Lastly, I would like to address the concerning issue of fuel supply, which continues to worsen, particularly in Houthi-controlled areas. Only three commercial fuel vessels were given clearance to berth at Hudaydah Port since the beginning of July. Four fuel vessels remain in the Coalition holding area. All but one petrol station of the Yemen Petroleum Company in Houthi-controlled governorates have reportedly closed. And the Yemen Gas Company indicated that there are increasingly severe cooking gas shortages.

No end to Yemen civil war on the horizon, senior UN official briefs Security Council

Henrietta Fore, Executive Director of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), acknowledged that little has changed since her last briefing on the situation two years ago. “Each day, the violence and destruction wreak havoc on the lives of children and their families, she stressed.

In 2021, 1.6 million children have been internally displaced due to violence, she said, notably in Hudaydah and Ma’rib, while essential health, sanitation and education services are “incredibly fragile” and “on the brink of total collapse”.

Gross domestic product (GDP), meanwhile, dropped 40 per cent since 2015, she continued – a major concern, as one quarter of the population – including many doctors, teachers and sanitation workers – rely on civil servant salaries, which are paid erratically, if at all.

Ms. Fore said almost 21 million – including 11.3 million children – need humanitarian assistance to survive. Some 2.3 million children are acutely malnourished and 400,000 children under age five suffer from severe acute malnutrition.

“In Yemen, one child dies every 10 minutes from preventable causes, including malnutrition and vaccine-preventable diseases,” she stressed.

Two million children are out of school and one in six schools can no longer be used.

‘War overshadows everything’

“War overshadows everything,” said Martin Griffiths, briefing the Council for the first time in his capacity as Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.

The offensive in Ma’rib province, and clashes along nearly 50 other front lines have reportedly killed or injured more than 1,200 civilians, as collapsing public services deprive people of clean water, sanitation, education and health care, and cholera and COVID-19 spread freely under such conditions.

With 20 million in need of humanitarian assistance and protection, a decimated economy is pushing the country to the brink, he said: five million people are one step away from succumbing to famine and the diseases that go with it, while 10 million more are right behind them.

“Famine is not just a food problem, it’s a symptom of a much deeper collapse,” he warned. People are starving not because there is no food, but because they cannot afford it.

Mr. Griffiths said that incomes are disappearing, especially salaries for civil servants, who represent a quarter of the population: the collapsed Yemeni currency is particularly disastrous for a country so heavily dependent on imports.

Saudi Arabia is trying to make America jealous with its budding Russia ties

Several Western and Arab media sources have reported that the Saudi Deputy Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman signed a “military cooperation agreement” on August 24 with one of his Russian counterparts at the seventh annual International Military-Technical Forum—an arms expo—near the capital Moscow. What exactly has been agreed to, though, is not yet clear.

Prince Khalid made the announcement in a tweet on August 24, stating that the agreement was “aimed at developing joint military cooperation between the two countries.” In another tweet, the Saudi deputy defense minister said that he met with Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu “to explore ways to strengthen the military and defense cooperation” between the two countries and discussed a “common endeavor to preserve stability and security in the region” and “shared challenges.”

Saudi Arabia Returns

Introduction

At the dawn of the Biden era of American foreign policy, a more mature, realistic Saudi foreign policy is emerging to match the shifting signals from Washington. In some measure, the Saudis are readopting elements that traditionally characterized their policy preferences before the meteoric rise of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS), the kingdom’s de facto ruler. Historically, Saudi Arabia avoided direct conflict with its enemies, made use of its deep pockets to steer regional developments, and placed an emphasis on diplomacy as the main tool in its national toolkit. By contrast, since 2015 Saudi foreign policy, matching Donald Trump’s hubristic “America First” policy, was characterized by aggressiveness and a willingness to resort to force to achieve its goals. But that newfound assertiveness largely failed to advance Saudi regional objectives. Among other setbacks over recent years, the Saudis embraced Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran, went along with a blockade of Qatar, and intervened in the civil war in Yemen, only to see each of these initiatives fall into disarray or collapse. The perception of Saudi Arabia as a “bull in the china shop” internationally, coupled with concerns over MbS’s domestic policies, led many international observers to cool their initial enthusiasm regarding the future king. Thus, the recent return to the earlier era with its welcome change in Saudi strategy, the more cautious pursuit of its interests, and the revival of Saudi diplomacy, has repaired much of the reputational damage that the kingdom has suffered in the past few years.

In this context, recent Saudi policy shifts have been notable. With his al-Ula initiative, MbS brought about the signing of a reconciliation agreement with Qatar, offered the Houthis in Yemen an especially generous cease-fire agreement, sought to strengthen the kingdom's relations with Iraq, brought about a honeymoon in relations with Oman, considered measures to reintegrate Syria, and even engaged in direct talks with his main rival, Iran. With these initiatives, the crown prince aims to reduce regional tensions, minimize damage to Saudi interests, consolidate Saudi influence where possible, and, along the way, win favor with the White House. As usual, MbS is firing in all directions, but this time it's not bullets. He's making use of the capabilities of the biggest economy in the Middle East and the standing of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques in order to restore the kingdom to its natural place in the regional order and also to prepare for the sensitive process of transferring the crown from his father. In this context, he is carrying out significant changes in Saudi foreign policy regarding Yemen

The kingdom's top priority since at least 2016 is to end the conflict in Yemen, which is inflicting a significant human and financial toll as well as constituting a direct threat to Saudi security and stability. Although the Saudis pushed back against the characterization of their intervention that was commonly held in the U.S. and the West, including by the incoming Biden administration, they nevertheless quickly followed President Joe Biden’s strategic shift on Yemen with their own matching offer to the Houthis for a cease-fire. But the Saudis believe that the Houthis misinterpreted Biden’s intentions and were encouraged by his decision to reverse their designation as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. Thus, they responded to the new diplomatic push with increased aggression within Yemen as well as across the border into Saudi Arabia. Despite the Saudi cease-fire offer, which paralleled the U.N. special envoy’s efforts, the Houthis have refused to engage. The Saudis believe that the Houthis’ willingness to negotiate an end to the civil conflict is linked to the fate of the P5+1 talks in Vienna. They therefore see no option except to continue support for the Yemeni forces fighting in Yemen — some 90% of their air operations are close air support to the Yemeni military in Marib — fearing that the fall of Marib would open the door for Houthi successes in Shabwa and farther east in Hadramawt, making a negotiated end to the conflict increasingly problematic, if not impossible. Re-establishing the balance of forces on the ground is a necessary prelude, in the Saudi view, to a return to the negotiating table.

Israel presses Iran views ahead of Bennett-Biden meeting - analysis

Repeated statements about Iran call attention to the issue at a time when that attention is badly needed.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett made his core message for his meeting with US President Joe Biden at the White House this week very clear: Iran, Iran and more Iran.

Bennett announced on Sunday that he has a plan to respond to Iran, and in the subsequent days, the prime minister and his close advisers echoed the message in briefings: Whether or not the US and Iran return to the nuclear deal, there needs to be an organized plan of action, and it needs to not only address the nuclear program but to strike at Iran’s regional proxies.

While the Jewish state wants to coordinate its actions against the Islamic Republic with the US, it is Israel’s responsibility to defend itself. Jerusalem is ready to take action and is not just going to wait for America, the briefers said.

On Wednesday, a day before Bennett’s meeting with Biden and hours before his planned meetings with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, the prime minister was joined by a chorus of voices from Tel Aviv warning against the rogue nation.

A genuine understanding of the Taliban’s theological underpinnings should lead the U.S. to drop its petty four-decade-long squabble with Iran and end the support of Saudi Arabia’s bombing and siege of Yemen.

Weakening nations that are most at risk of attack and influx of terror groups such as the Taliban through either sanctions or through arming Saudi’s relentless six-year onslaught on Yemen makes no sense.

Iran is the nation at greatest risk with a Taliban-led Afghanistan on its border.

Lebanon’s energy crisis fuels US-Iran tensions

In the midst of an economic collapse and an energy crisis, Lebanon has found itself in a tug of war between the United States and Iran

Saudi Arabia said it would be represented by its foreign minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian was also in the Iraqi capital.

Israeli PM to make case to Biden against Iran nuclear pact

President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett are set to hold their first face-to-face meeting Thursday, and Israel’s new leader intends to press Biden to give up pursuit of reviving the Iran nuclear deal.

Before arriving in Washington, Bennett made clear the top priority of the visit to the White House was to persuade Biden not to return to the nuclear accord, arguing Iran has already advanced in its uranium enrichment, and that sanctions relief would give Iran more resources to back Israel’s enemies in the region.

Eritrea forces kill Yemeni fisherman injure others: Yemeni gov't

Eritrean forces have killed a Yemeni fisherman and wounded and detained others in Yemeni regional waters, fishery minister in the Yemeni UN-recognized government said Sunday.
Yemeni fishers suffer violations in the regional waters of their country, Salem al-Socotri added in his initial report presented to the cabinet at a virtual meeting.
The report details assaults recently committed by Eritrean forces against Yemeni fishers, one of whom was killed and others were injured and detained according to the Riyadh-based Saba.
The [Hadi] Yemeni government instructed the fisheries and interior ministries to report these violations in details to the prime minister to take decision accordingly.
On Friday, the Eritrean navy intercepted three fishing boats near the Yemeni island of Honaish, arrested more than 20 fishermen and took them to Eritrean coasts, a local official in Hodeida governorate said.

IS YEMEN ON THE BRINK OF ECONOMIC COLLAPSE?

“The six-year long conflict has crippled Yemen’s economy, divided the country, and resulted in an acute economic and humanitarian crisis, which has been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic,” the International Monetary Fund (IMF) concluded following its virtual mission with the Yemeni authorities from May 24 to June 3. “External support has collapsed, foreign exchange reserves are nearly exhausted, and pressures on the budget have increased. COVID has only exacerbated the crisis, primarily through a sharp decline in remittances and lower oil prices and revenues. As a result, the exchange rate has depreciated rapidly and food prices have soared.”

The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP), meanwhile, has estimated that more than five million Yemenis are now on the brink of famine, with Tobias Flaemig, the WFP’s head of research, assessment and monitoring in Yemen, reporting that many people are having to survive on just one meal a day. The program has yet to declare a famine, however, because, according to Flaemig, sufficient evidence of food security, malnutrition and mortality has yet to be collected, given the difficulties posed by the ongoing conflict. “The international community must not wait for such a classification in Yemen to act. People do not start dying when a declaration of famine is made. It is only their deaths that trigger a declaration,” Flaemig told international broadcaster Voice of America in late July.

As such, external funding has become imperative. Indeed, the prime minister, Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed, himself has pressed “brotherly nations to provide urgent support so that a complete collapse does not occur after which it (will be) difficult for any intervention to save Yemen’s economy.”

With inflation likely to continue spiralling higher in response to exchange-rate depreciation and rising international food and fuel prices, however, the value of external aid diminishes quickly, while Yemen’s balance of payments and reserves are progressively worsening. To stabilize the macroeconomy and underpin a recovery, according to the IMF following its June visit to the country, Yemen needs to mobilize additional resources and accelerate the process of rebuilding institutions. “Securing additional external support would help to close the large financing gap, thereby curbing depreciation and inflation,” the team led by Brett Rayner concluded following the mission. “Raising domestic revenues would support macroeconomic stability by reducing the need for financing from the central bank. It would also allow the authorities to meet urgent social spending needs, including on basic goods, healthcare, and education.”

But without a quick resolution to the conflict, the IMF also warned, Yemen’s near-term economic prospects will remain decidedly dim. The continuation of the global pandemic, alongside the lack of external financing sources, will have a crippling impact on gross domestic product (GDP), which the Fund stated it expects to contract by a further 2 percent in 2021 after declining 8.5 percent in 2020.

Houthis order confiscation of new government-printed paper currency

Yemen's Houthis have issued money exchange businesses with orders to confiscate the new 1000 riyal notes printed by the government as part of a the terrorist militia's all-out insurgency that recently employed currency as a weapon.

The terrorist Shiit sectarian militia controlling much of Yemen's north ordered exchange businesses to "seize" what they call the "fake" paper currency, punch holes in them and submit them to the militia's so-called "central bank" in Sana'a.

In January 2020, the Houthis banned the government's printed banknotes and reserved for themselves the Saleh-era old notes, causing a split in currency and exchange rates.

[Hadi] Yemeni gov't adopts measures to increase customs dollar

The Yemeni official government on Sunday adopted measures to increase the customs dollar by 100 percent on unessential commodities.
The decision will not affect citizens, the government said at a virtual meeting, as basic commodities (wheat, rice, flour, cooking oil, infant milk and medicines) are already exempted from customs fees.
The decision will add no burdens on Yemeni consumers, since it mainly targets luxury goods, the government added, calling on relevant departments to intensify supervisory measures lest the decision is abused for unjustifiable increases in food prices.

Yemen’s deadly attack and Tehran’s regional escalation

The Houthis’ deadly attack on a military base in southern Yemen was another indication of the ongoing escalation by the movement and its Iranian sponsors.

Sunday’s attacks on Al-Anad and Khamis Mushayt can be seen as part of a trend in the wider region by Iran’s new government.

As the US quits Afghanistan, it needs to shore up its posture elsewhere to disabuse Tehran of its notions about Washington’s intentions. Iran is taking advantage of the political, economic and social crises in different countries to find a foothold in them, just like all terrorist and extremist organizations that take these circumstances as an entry point for talks with the peoples of various countries to convince them of their ideas and the need to belong to their groups.
This is what Tehran did in Yemen, for example, where it took advantage of the poor living and political conditions that followed what was known as the Youth Revolution and helped its arm there, represented by the Houthi militia, to take control of vast geographical areas and control the reins of power in a large number of governorates.

Houthis are defeatable. If only the Yemeni people rise up

Many are the spreaders of despair in Yemen: Some are foreigners, some are Yemenis, some do it on a bad faith, some are defeatists amongst us.

It is true that the conspiracy is international in scale, extremist in determination, and those who say, "There is no military solution to the conflict in Yemen" have already arranged things to make the battle against Houthis unwinnable, as much as they can.

They have secured the Houthi exclusive possession of heavy weapons and resources for suppressing any revolution against them.

But Yemeni people, if they stand together, they can still tip the balance in the army's favor, I believe – very easily.

One can look at Afghanistan.

Or we don't need to go that far: Defeating Houthis won't take 20 years. Just look at Al-Beidha governorate next door and how the terror network collapsed and withdrew from most of the province within hours.

Had there been only enough men even with light firearms to join the heroes of Al-Homeiqan to make up for the shortage in weapons resulting from the Emirati militias' stab-in-the-back, the control on the liberated districts would've been consolidated and Houthis would've never been able to come back.

How photographing Yemen during the uprising changed me

For one Spanish photographer, capturing an award-winning image was the start of an intimate relationship with a country rarely seen beyond the stereotypes.

A change

After that, I had the opportunity to travel all around Yemen with Laura Kasinof, a colleague who had been living there long before the revolution began.

When, like me, you are born and grow up in a Western country, you are taught to think that your way of life is the good one, the correct one. And that is how we sometimes approach and judge anything that is far from our norms or standards. But slowly and surely, Yemen began to change this.

One of the first things I noticed early on was the impossibility of eating alone. I would arrive at a restaurant, look for an empty table far from everyone else so I could have my space, and sit down. But seconds later, someone would join me, talking, asking questions about my cameras and where I was from.

Other times, on public transportation (the 15-seater vans that carry people from one place to another), the short ride shared with strangers would not be spent in silence. Money would flow from hand to hand to pay the driver, a joke would make someone laugh, and almost every time somebody would want to sing to me.

In Yemen, I also met some of the most extraordinary people I know.

Another thing Yemen gave me was a sense of spirituality.

I come from Spain, a predominantly Christian country, where the church was linked to the far-right during the civil war and Franco’s dictatorship. For many like me who grew up in left-wing working-class families, religion was not a priority.

But one day in Sanaa, after a long, sad day of bombings, I felt broken inside, with no energy to even talk or cry. I found myself seeking some kind of solace in a mosque. Some Yemeni friends explained to me how to pray, and I stood in congregation next to them. When we finished, we hugged each other. And I felt relief.

Pedaling for peace: cyclists hit the road in war-torn Yemen

Dozens of Yemeni cyclists hit the road Wednesday with a shared goal -- to spread peace in a country embroiled in conflict for more than seven years.

In the capital Sanaa, the cyclists prepared for their 320-kilometre (200-mile) journey to the northern province of Saada, one of the areas devastated by the ongoing war between the government and the Huthi rebels.

They plan to ride north through Amran province to reach Saada.

"We are going to Saada to spread the message of peace," Jidadi told AFP.
