Snowden leaks suggest GCHQ complicity in Yemen drone strike – lawyers

GCHQ is under pressure again on Wednesday after lawyers claimed documents leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden may indicate complicity in US targeted killing missions. A leading barrister has been asked to assess classified documents given to the Guardian newspaper by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. The files discuss how a US, UK and Australian joint operation codenamed Overhead was involved in a targeted killing in Yemen in 2012.

Blood money: How your 401k profits from bombing Yemen

An exclusive investigation by reported.ly has traced the manufacture and shipping of bomb components from the European Union to the United Arab Emirates, and also discovered the use of bombs made by the European manufacturer in attacks by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, where potentially unlawful civilian deaths have been documented. The Germany-based manufacturer of the bomb components, Rheinmetall AG, is a publicly traded company whose major shareholders have included a host of US financial firms, as well as the New York state pension fund, Virginia’s 529 college savings program and the sovereign pension fund of Norway. Through their investments in Rhinemetall, these institutions are profiting off the sale of bombs currently being dropped on Yemen. And depending on your 401k, pension or college investment plan, you might be profiting as well.

Shipping documents and diplomatic cables leaked by the Yemen Cyber Army and sent to reported.ly last week trace the recent shipment of bomb components from the Italian port of Genoa to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, then continuing to Dubai’s Jebel Ali port and overland to a bomb assembly plant in Abu Dhabi. Manufactured by Rheinmetall subsidiary RWM Italia S.p.a. on the picturesque island of Sardinia, the munitions in question are known as MK82 and MK84 bombs. After the long trip from Genoa, components for these munitions are assembled by Burkan Munitions Systems for the UAE’s Armed Forces. The UAE military is one of several forcesthat has bombed Yemen as part of a Saudi-led coalition against Houthi rebels since March.

It will come as little surprise to many that bombs manufactured by a German company are shipped to armed forces around the world; that’s the nature of the international arms trade. What is interesting here is the peek provided by the leaked documents into an arms shipment supply chain, from the point of manufacture in Europe to specific countries engaged in conflict. For residents of the EU in particular, it’s important to know the scale of arms trade by EU countries. For people worldwide who have a stake in retirement funds and other investment plans that may include Rheinmetall in their portfolios, it’s important to know if they unwittingly benefit from the arms trade -by Malachy Browne

Doomed: Saudi Arabia Will Fail in Yemen

Saudi Arabia and its coalition of Arab and African countries appears to be taking the same path as the failed imperial policies of the 1960s. The Saudi air campaign was originally met with tepid enthusiasm by members of Yemen’s Southern Movement and supporters of Yemen’s ousted, but still internationally recognized President, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi. Many Yemenis were alarmed by the speed with which the tribesmen of the Houthi movement took control of the government in Sana’a and extended their military presence southward in pursuit of Hadi and his supporters. Two and a half months later, the Saudi bombing campaign has evolved from a series of tactical strikes to slow the Houthi military assault into a vendetta bombing campaign against Saudi political opponents in Yemen. Many of the airstrikes are targeting civilian houses belonging to Saleh’s family and friends, factories deemed suspicious and civilian transportation hubs and airports across the country, all of which have questionable military value.

Sitting comfortably in his luxury hotel of exile, President Hadi continues to condone Saudi bombings even as a staggering number of his countrymen have become internal refugees and are suffering a humanitarian crisis of serious proportions. Rather than garner additional public support for President Hadi, the Saudi bombing campaign has only increased the skepticism of his remote government and has instead played into the hands of Houthi propagandists. All the while, it does not seem that the military capabilities of the Houthi tribesmen or the segments of the Yemeni army still loyal to Saleh have been greatly diminished.

Despite emerging evidence that the Saudi-coalition’s aerial campaign is not only ineffective but counterproductive to the promotion of a political settlement in Yemen, the bombings continue with no sign of concluding. The relentless pursuit of an aggressive military stance towards the Houthi movement is in part a reflection of Saudi Arabia’s struggle against the ghost of Iranian involvement in South Arabia. There is no Saudi exit strategy in which the bombing can stop, short of a complete Houthi political withdrawal. Otherwise, this war will demonstrate a weakness in Saudi policy towards Iran. This aggressive policy is driven in particular by the new Saudi King Salman’s need to exhibit political and military dominance to quiet his many doubters.

Saudi Arabia cannot triumph through force of arms alone as its air force has reached the upper limits of what it can achieve against the Houthis. Continuing a fruitless aerial campaign will only foster increasing anti-Saudi political alliance in Yemen and lead to an ignominious withdrawal reminiscent of British and Egyptian withdrawals of the past - by Asher Orkaby

Saudi Yemen bombing a message to Iran as damage mounts

Saudi Arabia and their allies need to think again about the bombing campaign in Yemen. They are nowhere close to breaking the will of the Houthis, their main target. for Saudi Arabia, sending a message to Iran is at least as important as trying to bend the Houthis to their will. Senior Saudis I spoke to when the bombing campaign started talked about the threat they perceived from Iran, not about the Houthis. Whatever the degree of co-operation with Iran, what matters is the Saudis and their allies have chosen Yemen as the place to send a firm message to Tehran that they will not accept any meddling in what they see as their back yard.

Between The Anvil Of Hadi’s Nonchalance And The Hammer Of The Houthi’s Intransigence, Yemen Is Being Crushed.

Nowadays, Yemen stands between two sides; the international community’s ” legitimate government”, which is a mere pro forma force operating from Riyadh, and the illegal government operating from the homeland known internationally as the Houthi rebels.

The two parties’ reforms are not recognized by most Yemenis. We believe that neither Houthis or Hadi have the legitimate authority to make such crucial decisions. “Both Hadi and the Houthis are secret agents serving foreign agendas. They know nothing about patriotism,” stated Sara Faisel, a college student from Ibb.

Observers believe that if the current complicated situation continues for long, Yemen will be threatened with further descent into chaos. For that reason, many observers stress that the current situation must come to an end, otherwise the country is likely to end up with more fragmentation and balkanisation.

If Yemen does not soon begin to move forward by having one power that controls the different aspects of the country and by making reforms that help Yemen to overcome their challenges, Yemen will inevitably be left behind for ever.

Buying Silence: How the Saudi Foreign Ministry controls Arab media

On Monday, Saudi Arabia celebrated the beheading of its 100th prisoner this year. The story was nowhere to be seen on Arab media despite the story's circulation on wire services. Even international media was relatively mute about this milestone compared to what it might have been if it had concerned a different country. How does a story like this go unnoticed?

Today's release of the WikiLeaks "Saudi Cables" from the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs show how it's done.

The oil-rich Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its ruling family take a systematic approach to maintaining the country's positive image on the international stage. Most world governments engage in PR campaigns to fend off criticism and build relations in influential places. Saudi Arabia controls its image by monitoring media and buying loyalties from Australia to Canada and everywhereinbetween.

Documents reveal the extensive efforts to monitor and co-opt Arab media, making sure to correct any deviations in regional coverage of Saudi Arabia and Saudi-related matters. Saudi Arabia's strategy for co-opting Arab media takes two forms, corresponding to the "carrot and stick" approach, referred to in the documents as "neutralisation" and "containment". The approach is customised depending on the market and the media in question.

Welcome to Yemen, Where War Has Turned Cities Into a Living Hell

The fatigue of war is evident on the streets of Sanaa in the form of shattered glass that residents have given up on cleaning away. Airstrikes by a Saudi-led military coalition have hit residential areas of the Yemeni capital with such regularity that there is little point in replacing windows or clearing streets of the piles of debris that will only reappear and grow larger within days or hours.

he situation is pushing Yemen toward total collapse, aid agencies say. The crisis is rapidly reaching the point where it is outweighed only by the dire situation in Syria, which recently entered its fifth year of civil war. Already the poorest country in the region before the war, around 80 percent of Yemenis — some 26 million people — now need humanitarian assistance of some kind. At least 2,500 have been killed, 11,000 injured, and 1 million more have been displaced from their homes, according to - by Ahlam Mohsen and Peter Salisbury

MoD (Minitery of Defence) confirms Britain is arming Saudi Arabia in Yemen conflict

Britain’s Ministry of Defence has confirmed it is providing technical support and arming Saudi Arabia in its ongoing war against Yemen, RT has learned

RT contacted the MoD to ask if British weapons are being used in Saudi airstrikes on Yemen and if the UK is providing assistance to the Saudi-led coalition.

An MoD spokesperson replied: “The UK is not participating directly in Saudi military operations. We are providing support to the Saudi Arabian Armed Forces and as part of pre-existing arrangements are providing precision guided weapons to assist the Saudi Air Force. The use of these weapons is a matter for the Saudis but we are assured that they will be used in compliance with international law.” The MoD’s response confirms suspicions held by anti-arms trade campaigners that Britain is providing support for a war that top Yemeni academics based in the West have branded “illegal.”

UN launches fresh Yemen aid appeal as WHO confirms dengue fever outbreak

World Health Organisation says 3,000 cases of dengue fever have been recorded since March. The United Nations has launched a renewed appeal for $1.6bn in funds to help civilians in Yemen, as the World Health Organisation confirmed an outbreak of dengue fever in the Arab world’s poorest country, where a growing humanitarian crisis is spiralling out of control and a massive aid pledge by Saudi Arabia has failed to materialise.

Yemen is reeling from the effects of a blockade imposed by a Saudi-led coalition, which launched an aerial campaign in March to stem the advance of Houthi rebels allied with Iran.

The blockade has led to severe fuel, water and medicine shortages in Yemen, where the UN believes 21 million people, or 80% of the population, are in need of humanitarian assistance – by Kareem Shaheen

Yemen's Fault Lines

Yemen was once held upby U.S. President Barack Obama as a model partner in the battle against Islamic militants. Six months later, Yemen was being bombedby a Saudi-led coalition of Arab states in a U.S.-supportedcampaign against rebels who’d taken chargeof most of the main cities. The journey between those points is the story of a country riven by internal divisions and torn by the interests of external parties. Where Yemen’s path leads has never been of greater importance to outsiders. Instability benefitsYemen-based jihadistgroups, including the most potent branch of al-Qaeda.

Can anyone bring unity and order to Yemen? The Saudi-led coalition said its intervention was aimedat compelling the Houthis to return to the political discussions they earlier abandoned. The Houthis never expressed a particular ambition to rule Yemen. On the other hand, they are battle-hardened, have little trust in the Saudis — with whom they fought a brief border war starting in 2009 — and rule out restoring Hadi to power, as the Saudis wish. Their critics paint them as Iranian puppets. But apart from economic aid after the takeover of the capital, it’s not clearwhat Iranian support the Houthis have received, and to what extent they dance to Iran’s tune. In any case, even if the Arab bombing campaign was meant to bring stability to Yemen in the long-term, it was havingthe opposite effectin the short run.

In Yemen, Momentum Swings Against Houthi Rebels

In the battle for Yemen, forces opposed to the Houthi rebels appear to have the upper hand, at least for now. Indeed, over the past week, anti-Houthi fighters have made consistent, albeit limited, territorial gains against the rebels and against forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

In Aden, anti-Houthi forces expanded their territory in the northern and western outskirts of the city. Meanwhile, they have taken ground in the fight near the airport in Aden. In Dali province, the general appointed by President Abd Rabboh Mansour Hadi to lead the contingent of the 33rd Brigade that is still loyal to the government (most of it is not) has refilled his ranks by gathering former military officers. He has also recruited Southern Resistance fighters, who also oppose the Houthis and who have claimed some recent success of their own in Dali. Elsewhere, the counteroffensive against the Houthis in Marib city has proved effective, and the rebels' attempts to enter the city appear unrealistic.
