Der mysteriöse Tod eines mutmaßlichen Khashoggi-Killers
15 Männer sollen zum Killerkommando gehört haben, das nach türkischen Angaben den Journalisten Jamal Khashoggi getötet hat. Einer davon lebt nun offenbar nicht mehr.
Neue bizarre Facette im Fall des mutmaßlich ermordeten saudi-arabischen Journalisten Jamal Khashoggi: Ein angebliches Mitglied des Killerkommandos soll unter mysteriösen Umständen bei einem Verkehrsunfall gestorben sein. Das berichtet die Erdogan-nahe Tageszeitung "Yeni Safak". Es gebe Gerüchte, er sei zum Schweigen gebracht worden, schreibt die Zeitung.
Darunter war auch Meshal Saad al-B., der nun bei dem Unfall sein Leben verloren habe. Seine Rolle bei dem Kommando sei unklar, es habe keine Hierarchie gegeben, berichtet "Yeni Safak".
"Yeni Safak" berichtet dagegen, zu den Umständen des Unfalls gebe es keine Erkenntnisse. Es könne jetzt spekuliert werden, ob andere Mitglieder der Gruppe auch beseitigt würden, schreibt die türkische Zeitung.
Unterdessen hat ein wichtiger saudischer Geistlicher dazu aufgefordert, zur Königsfamilie zu stehen, egal ob sie verantwortlich sei für die Tötung Khashoggis oder nicht. Für jeden Schaden, der dem Königshaus zugefügt werde, müsse die gesamte arabische Welt den Preis zahlen, schrieb Dr. Mohamed Saidi an seine fast eine Million Twitter-Follower.

Fall Khashoggi: Türkische Polizei hat Konsul-Villa durchsucht
Nach der Inspektion des saudi-arabischen Konsulats in Istanbul hat die türkische Polizei nun auch den Wohnsitz des saudischen Konsuls Mohammed al-Otaibi durchsucht, um Erkenntnisse im Fall des verschwundenen Journalisten Jamal Khashoggi zu gewinnen.
Ein Dutzend Polizisten und Staatsanwälte betrat am Nachmittag das Gebäude - einen Tag, nachdem türkische Medien bereits über die bevorstehende Durchsuchung berichtet hatten. Der Zugriff hatte sich verzögert, da Saudi-Arabien seine Zustimmung zunächst nicht erteilt hatte, erklärte Außenminister Mevlüt Cavusoglu. Die Familie des Konsuls habe sich noch in der Villa aufgehalten - al-Otaibi selbst war bereits am Dienstag nach Riad abgereist.
Cavusoglu betonte, die Türkei habe ihn nicht ausgewiesen, warf ihm jedoch zugleich "respektloses Verhalten" nach dem Verschwinden Khashoggis vor.
Inzwischen ist die Durchsuchung beendet.

Der Journalist und saudi-arabische Regimekritiker Jamal Khashoggi ist seit dem 2. Oktober verschwunden. Die "Washington Post" veröffentlichte jetzt seinen bislang letzten Beitrag. Hier einige Auszüge.
"Im Frühling 2011 war die arabische Welt voller Hoffnung. Journalisten, Wissenschaftler und die allgemeine Bevölkerung hatten große Erwartungen, dass es in ihren jeweiligen Ländern eine fröhliche und freie arabische Gesellschaft geben würde. Sie erwarteten eine Emanzipierung von der Hegemonie ihrer Regierungen sowie von beständigen Eingriffen und der Informationszensur. Diese Erwartungen wurden schnell zerschlagen; diese Gesellschaften fielen bald auf den alten Status quo zurück oder sahen sich noch härteren Bedingungen gegenüber als zuvor.

Infolgedessen haben Regierungen in der arabischen Welt freie Hand, die Medien weiterhin und in einem immer größeren Ausmaß zum Schweigen zu bringen. Es gab einmal eine Zeit, in der Journalisten glaubten, das Internet werde Informationen von der Zensur und der Kontrolle befreien, die man von den Print-Medien kennt. Aber diese Regierungen, deren bloße Existenz auf der Kontrolle von Informationen basiert, haben das Internet auf aggressive Weise gesperrt. Sie haben auch örtliche Reporter festgenommen und Werbekunden unter Druck gesetzt, um dem Einkommen bestimmter Publikationen zu schaden.

Trumps Solidarität zu den Saudis wächst – trotz aller grausigen Details
Aber wie glaubwürdig sind die Beteuerungen Saudi-Arabiens? Kann es stimmen, dass die Führung in Riad nichts von dem Vorfall wusste, obwohl mehrere Verdächtige aus dem direkten Umfeld des Thronfolgers stammen? Das lässt sich nicht mit Sicherheit sagen, aber Zweifel scheinen angebracht. Und das macht die Sache auch für Trump heikel. In den USA wächst der Druck auf den Präsidenten, etwas zu tun, das er gerne vermeiden würde: nämlich Sanktionen gegen Saudi-Arabien zu verhängen.
Doch schon das, was man weiß, sorgt für viel internationale Aufregung und stürzt den US-Präsidenten in ein Dilemma. Denn Trump braucht Saudi-Arabien, um gegen ein anderes Land in der Region vorzugehen: den Iran.
Trump schneidet den Iran vom globalen Öl-Geschäft ab – und braucht Saudi-Arabien, um die Folgen dieses Schrittes aufzufangen. Der US-Präsident will nämlich zugleich, dass der Rohstoff günstiger wird. Trump fürchtet, dass hohe Preise den Aufschwung abwürgen, den die Wirtschaft seines Landes gerade erlebt.
Saudi-Arabien könnte das ändern. Der Staat bestimmt wie kaum ein zweiter über das Auf und Ab der Kurse.
Trump ist auf Saudi-Arabien angewiesen, darauf, dass die Scheichs das Öl weiter fließen lassen.
Das könnte ein Hauptgrund dafür sein, dass sich der amerikanische Präisdent Riad gegenüber so nachsichtig zeigt – trotz der immer erdrückenderen Hinweise, trotz der schauerlichen Details.
Entsprechend wächst die internationale Kritik an Trump.

Die Indizien im Fall Jamal Khashoggi belasten die Herrscher in Riad immer stärker. Doch Donald Trump wird Saudi-Arabien gewähren lassen – weil er es für eine bestimmte Rolle in seinen Nahost-Plänen braucht.
Donald Trump hat seinen alten Kniff herausgeholt, wie immer, wenn in der Weltpolitik seine Interessen mit unangenehmen Tatsachen über Kreuz liegen.
So ist es nun auch in der Krise um das Verschwinden des saudischen Regimekritikers Jamal Khashoggi. Während sich die Indizien mehren, dass Khashoggi in Istanbul von Leuten des Kronprinzen Mohammed bin Salman gefoltert und umgebracht wurde, sagt Trump nach einem Telefonat mit ihm ganz bequem: Der Kronprinz habe "es komplett dementiert".
In Washington ist die Entrüstung über das Regime in Riad nach den Enthüllungen der vergangenen Tage gewachsen.
Trumps anfängliche Drohungen mit "schweren Konsequenzen" sind längst anderen Sätzen gewichen. Am Mittwoch sagte er im Weißen Haus über die Saudis dies: "Sie sind ein sehr wichtiger Verbündeter." Bei Khashoggi, der nur wenige Kilometer vom Weißen Haus entfernt im Speckgürtel Washingtons wohnte, betont Trump immer wieder, dass dieser ein saudi-arabischer Staatsbürger gewesen sei.
Was steckt dahinter?
Der Fall zeigt zum einen, wie Trump in der Außenpolitik wirtschaftliche Vorteile und geopolitische Erwägungen betont, aber zu Menschenrechten schweigt. Wer Verbrechen gegen Oppositionelle begeht, hat gute Chancen, davonzukommen, ohne dass es Strafmaßnahmen aus Washington hagelt.
Im Falle Saudi-Arabiens kommen noch Besonderheiten hinzu.

Noch wichtiger ist allerdings die Rolle, die Saudi-Arabien in der Nahost-Politik der Trump-Regierung einnimmt. Schon kurz nach Amtsantritt war klar, dass Trump gemeinsam mit Riad die Isolation Irans vorantreiben wollte. Trumps Schwiegersohn Jared Kushner, der Trump in Nahost-Fragen berät, suchte von Anfang an den engen Draht zu Kronprinz Mohammad bin Salman.

US-Demokraten fordern Aufklärung
Unterdessen gerät US-Präsident Donald Trump im Fall Khashoggi unter Druck. Elf Senatoren der oppositionellen Demokraten fordern von dem Präsidenten und von der von seinen Söhnen geführten Firmengruppe Aufklärung "über jedwede finanzielle Verbindungen zwischen der Trump-Organisation und dem Königreich Saudi-Arabien". Es gebe Anlass zur Sorge über "finanzielle Interessenskonflikte". Trump hatte am Dienstag auf Twitter erklärt: "Fürs Protokoll, ich habe keinerlei finanzielle Interessen in Saudi-Arabien."
In einem Schreiben der elf Senatoren an Trump heißt es: "Es ist zwingend erforderlich, dass die Sanktionsentscheidung und die US-Politik gegenüber Saudi-Arabien im Allgemeinen nicht durch Interessenkonflikte beeinflusst werden, die aufgrund Ihrer engen finanziellen Beziehungen zu Saudi-Arabien oder der Ihrer Familie bestehen könnten."

Die Republikaner werden unruhig
Donald Trump wartet im Fall Khashoggi weiter ab, doch einige Republikaner fordern bereits eine harte Reaktion gegenüber Saudi-Arabien. Auch weil sich Hinweise auf eine Beteiligung der Königsfamilie verdichten.
Unterdessen verdichten sich die Hinweise auf eine direkte Beteiligung der saudischen Königsfamilie an dem Verschwinden Khashoggis. Amerikanische Geheimdienstberichte legen laut der „Washington Post” nahe, dass Kronprinz Muhammad Bin Salman Jamal Khashoggi loswerden wollte und dass er mindestens von der Aktion gegen den Journalisten wusste. Demnach soll der Kronprinz auch versucht haben, Khashoggi zurück nach Saudi-Arabien zu locken, indem er ihm über einen Mittelsmann Sicherheit und einen Job anbot, berichtete die Zeitung. Mehrere der Männer, die im Konsulat in Istanbul auf Khashoggi warteten, hätten demnach Verbindungen zu den Sicherheitskräften der Königsfamilie.
Während Trump vor kurzem noch darüber spekuliert hatte, ob es sich auch um die Tat einer kriminellen Bande handeln könnte, gab sein Anwalt und enger Berater Rudy Giuliani zu, dass eine Verbindung zur saudischen Königsfamilie wahrscheinlich sei. „Die einzige Frage ist, gaben der König oder der Kronprinz das in Auftrag oder war es eine Gruppe, die ihnen gefallen wollte?” sagte Giuliani in einem Interview. Trump wehrte sich am Mittwoch gegen den Vorwurf, er helfe den Saudis beim Vertuschen eines Mordes. „Ich gebe ihnen überhaupt keine Deckung”, sagte er Reportern. „Sie sind Verbündete. Wir haben andere gute Verbündete im Mittleren Osten.”
Einzelne republikanische Senatoren fordern unterdessen Aufklärung von Trump, nachdem am Dienstag ein geplantes Briefing über Geheimdienstinformationen abgesagt worden war. Bob Corker aus Tennessee, der den Auswärtigen Ausschuss leitet, sagte, dass die Regierung nicht alle Geheimdienstinformationen über den Fall herausgebe. „Ich kann nur vermuten, dass die Berichte kein schönes Bild von der Rolle Saudi-Arabiens zeichnen”, sagte Corker der „Washington Post”. Alles deute auf eine Beteiligung des Kronprinzen Muhammad Bin Salman hin.

Weiter Rätselraten im Fall des mysteriös verschwundenen Jamal Khashoggi: Die türkischen Behörden haben offenbar am Donnerstag erneut das saudi-arabische Konsulat in Istanbul durchsucht, wo der Journalist Anfang des Monats spurlos verschwand.
US-Präsident Donald Trump hat unterdessen während einer Pressekonferenz erklärt, die Vereinigten Staaten hätten die Türkei gebeten, ihnen die Audiodatei zu übermitteln - wenn sie denn tatsächlich existiere. "Ende der Woche wissen wir wahrscheinlich, was passiert ist", sagte er.

Der Prinz und der Journalist
Wie das falsche Bild eines massenmordenden Prinzen durch das falsche Bild eines angeblichen "Dissidenten" zerstört wird
100.000 Tote im Jemen, die auf das Konto eines Angriffskrieges von Saudi-Arabien mit der Hilfe der USA und Großbritanniens gehen, haben nur wenig Aufregung in westlichen Medien verursacht. Aber der Tod eines einzelnen Journalisten, vermutlich in einem Konsulat Saudi-Arabiens in der Türkei, schlägt hohe Wellen.
Erdogan befindet sich in einem historischen geopolitischen Konflikt mit Saudi-Arabien und strebt die Vorherrschaft im Mittleren Osten, mindestens in den arabischen Ländern, an. Eine Rolle, die Saudi-Arabien für sich beansprucht.
Wäre es nicht die Türkei gewesen, könnte man ziemlich sicher sein, dass der Vorgang unter den Teppich gekehrt worden wäre. Aber Erdogan nutzt die Geschichte genüsslich, um seine politische Agenda zu verfolgen, und er versucht, das Thema so lange wie möglich in den Schlagzeilen zu halten.
Natürlich haben die Türken Konsulate, so auch das Saudi-Arabiens, verwanzt.
Erdogan versteht es nun hervorragend, mit der tröpfenweise Freigabe von Informationen die USA und Saudi-Arabien in Widersprüche zu verwickeln und die Aufmerksamkeit der Öffentlichkeit mit einem noch nicht am Höhepunkt angekommenen Spannungsbogen bei Laune zu halten.
Die Reaktion der USA
Am Montag, den 15. Oktober, brachte das Weiße Haus die These in die Debatte ein, dass "schurkische Mörder" für einen Quasi-Unfall in dem Konsulat in Istanbul verantwortlich war. Sicher hatte der interessierte Leser schon die Meldungen gelesen, dass Khashoggi möglicherweise versehentlich bei einem Verhör verstorben wäre. Präsident Trump war einer der ersten, der die These verbreitete.
Saudi-Arabien ging aber nicht über diese "goldene Brücke" die von den USA versucht wurde zu bauen. Dort behauptet man nach wie vor, also bis zum 17. Oktober, nichts vom Verschwinden des Journalisten zu wissen
Die US-Medien konnten es wohl zunächst nicht richtig glauben, dass der hochgejubelte MbS einen solchen Kardinalfehler machen würde, die New York Times, das Wall Street Journal und die Washington Post benötigten eine Woche, bis sie die Verbindung der vermeintlichen Mörder mit dem Kronprinzen auf die Titelseiten brachten. Sie brauchen wesentlich länger als viele andere Medien, und das, obwohl sie doch Trump, den sie hassen, hätten schaden können.
Trump jedenfalls zog die Notbremse und erklärte, dass bis zum Nachweis der Schuld die Unschuldsvermutung gelte. Was im Fall von Skripal oder "Giftgas"-Einsatz in Syrien natürlich nicht angewandt wird.
Dagegen ist das Motiv von MbS deutlich zu erkennen. Die Muslimbrüder sind die erklärten Feinde der Wahhabiten. Und MbS ist bekannt dafür, kurzen Prozess zu machen und sich als absolutistisch agierender Herrscher durchzusetzen. Er war der erste saudische Herrscher, der die Familienregel der Führung durch Konsultationen durchbrach. Er folterte andere Prinzen und stahl ihr Geld. Was im Westen als "Kampf gegen die Korruption" gelobt wurde. Als ob MbS weniger korrupt wäre. Und diese Prinzen, denen MbS mehr als körperliche Schmerzen zugefügt hatte, waren zu Khashoggi gegangen und hatten ihm davon berichtet.
Dass der Kronprinz Kritiker öffentlich enthaupten lässt, ebenso eine Frau, die sich dafür einsetzte, dass Frauen in Saudi-Arabien Autofahren dürfen, wofür man MbS ach so sehr gelobt hatte, als er diese Möglichkeit einführte, hatte nie zu einem großen Sturm der Erregung im Westen geführt.
Die vermutliche Ermordung des Journalisten hat bereits große Wirkungen auf die Wirtschaft und internationalen Beziehungen Saudi-Arabiens gehabt. Nicht das Bombardieren von Schulkindern, von ziviler Infrastruktur, von Beerdigungen und Märkten, das bewusste Erzeugen einer Hungersnot und von Epidemien, nein, die bisher unbewiesene Ermordung eines saudischen Journalisten hatte dies ausgelöst.
Und während die Washington Post gelassen über Massenmorde im Jemen berichtet, wird sie in diesem Fall keine Ruhe geben, bis der Fall aufgeklärt ist. Trump steht mit seiner Unterstützung in den USA bisher weitgehend alleine auf weiter Flur. Mit Saudi-Arabien steht und fällt seine Politik des Mittleren Ostens. Joe, flieg nach Riad
Dieses Regime missachtet nicht nur das Lebens- und Rederecht seiner Bürger, es schert sich auch nicht um seine vorgeblichen Partnerstaaten. Wie soll da eine berechenbare Kooperation möglich sein, geschweige denn gepflegtes Parlieren über den gemeinsamen Aufbruch in eine bessere Welt?
Trotzdem sind die reihenweisen Absagender CEOs zum Wüstengipfel scheinheilig: Abgesehen davon, dass ein verschwundener Journalist mit US-Wohnsitz jetzt mehr Wirbel auslöst als die Zehntausenden Opfer von Salmans Jemenkrieg, die hunderten Enthaupteten auf saudischen Plätzen, die Unterdrückung der schiitischen Minderheit, das Mobbing gegen souveräne Staaten von Libanon bis Katar oder auch die Multi-Milliarden-Enteignung von Salmans eigenen Verwandten.
Die meisten Absagen ans "Davos in der Wüste" sind scheinheilig
Die meisten der verhinderten Wüsten-Davos-Gäste sehen im traditionell absolutistisch, fundamental-religiös und frauenverachtend regierten Königreich vor allem eine Gelegenheit zum guten Geschäft - Khashoggi hin oder her. Statt des Konzernchefs werden Manager der zweiten Reihe geschickt, um große Deals wenigstens vorzubereiten.

Die Linke: Keine Mordwerkzeuge mehr für Saudi-Arabien

„Die Kriegsverbrechen im Jemen und der Mord am Journalisten Khashoggi müssen Konsequenzen haben. Der Export weiterer Mordwerkzeuge an die saudische Diktatur muss sofort gestoppt werden. Business as usual mit der islamistischen Monarchie käme einem Freibrief für Mord und Kriegsverbrechen gleich“, erklärt Sevim Dagdelen, stellvertretende Vorsitzende der Fraktion DIE LINKE. Dagdelen weiter:
„Während im Fall von Sergej Skripal sofort russische Diplomaten in vorauseilendem Gehorsam ausgewiesen wurden, belässt man es bei Saudi-Arabien bei wohlfeilen halbseichten Aufforderungen zur rückhaltlosen Aufklärung. Das signalisiert den Saudis, dass sie sich alles erlauben können. Und es zeigt die Doppelmoral der Bundesregierung.
Saudi-Arabien ist eine Gefahr für Frieden und Stabilität in der Region und der ganzen Welt. Und es ist eine Gefahr für Meinungs- und Pressefreiheit sowie die Menschenrechte. Das saudische Königshaus sucht dringend nach einem Ausweg aus der diplomatischen Krise, die es sich mit dem mutmaßlichen Staatsmord an dem Journalisten Jamal Khashoggi eingehandelt hat. Neueste Idee ist laut amerikanischen Medien, den Tod des Regierungskritikers im Konsulat von Istanbul – nach zwei Wochen des Leugnens – nun doch als ein "schiefgelaufenes Verhör" und eine "versuchte Entführung" einzugestehen: Demnach werde eine Erklärung vorbereitet, die die ganze Operation als eine eigenmächtige, aus dem Ruder gelaufene Tat übereifriger Geheimdienstler darstellt.
Das hinter den Kulissen wohl diskutierte neue Narrativ aber könnte den Schaden weiter vergrößern, anstatt ihn zu begrenzen. König Salman selbst und sein allmächtiger Sohn Mohammed stünden als Lügner da. Auch die Mitanreise eines führenden Rechtsmediziners des Landes mit einer Knochensäge im Gepäck, der in wissenschaftlichen Aufsätzen publiziert hat, wie man menschliche Körper zerlegt, wäre völlig unerklärlich.
Zudem müsste das Königreich offenlegen, was mit der Leiche geschehen ist und wo sie sich befindet. Auch eine mögliche Präsentation der Täter und ihrer angeblichen Geständnisse könnte zu einem PR-Desaster auswachsen.
"Die versuchen uns auf den Arm zu nehmen"
In Istanbul durchsuchten türkische Ermittler am Montagnachmittag bis spät in die Nacht hinein das saudische Konsulat. Zuvor hatten Journalisten beobachtet, wie ein größerer Trupp von Putzkräften durch den Haupteingang in dem Gebäude verschwand. Die türkischen Beamten, die auch Proben im Garten nahmen, berichteten später, in den Fluren und Zimmern hätte es auffällig nach Reinigungschemikalien gerochen. Nach Angaben von Präsident Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wurden auch Teile der Innenräume frisch gestrichen.

Saudischen Fachkräften soll bei ihrer investigativen Arbeit am Körper von Jamal Khashoggi ein Fehler unterlaufen sein, der dazu führte, dass dieser verstarb. Darauf läuft, wie gleich drei große US-Medien - CNN, Wall Street Journal und die New York Times - berichten, ein Erklärungsmodell hinaus, das angeblich in Riad erwogen wird.
Wie es aussieht, wird Jamal Khashoggi nicht wieder lebendig auftauchen. Die gruslige türkische Version, wonach der Mann die saudi-arabische Vertretung in Istanbul in Form von Leichenteilen verlassen hat, scheint mehr mit der Wahrheit zu tun zu haben, als es vielen Staats- und Konzernführern in der Welt behagen kann. Jetzt wird eine Lösung gesucht.
Lösung dringend gesucht
Selbstverständlich nennt keine der drei US-Medien die Quelle ihrer Nachricht, wonach man in Saudi-Arabien eine offizielle Erklärung erwäge, die erzählt, dass schurkische ("rogue") Agenten Jamal Khashoggi versehentlich umbrachten - dabei sollten sie den Mann nur befragen und zurück nach Saudi-Arabien bringen - und dies kein Auftragsmord war, den Riad angeordnet hat.
Es ist nicht sicher, ob diese Erklärung, die den Medien von "Personen berichtet wurde, die mit der Sache befasst sind" überhaupt offiziell abgegeben wird. Nichts ist sicher, weil der Einsatz sehr hoch ist. Man stelle sich vor, wie sie alle reagieren werden, wenn es heißt, dass Saudi-Arabien für den Tod Khashoggis in der saudischen Vertretung in Istanbul verantwortlich ist: Trump, Merkel, Netanjahu, zum Beispiel, oder Iran und Katar.
Die Geschäfte, die Saudi-Arabien verspricht, sind immer großartig (amerikanisch: "Bigger than life"). Der Druck in der westlichen Öffentlichkeit, dass der Nahe Osten so sein soll, wie er zu den Geschäften und zu den politischen Interessen passt, ist hoch. Als die unpassende Einschätzung vom BND ("Der Kronprinz ist zu impulsiv") kam, ruderte die Regierung zurück. Nicht zu vergessen ist auch die Ölpreisschraube, an der Saudi-Arabien drehen kann.
Motive für die Fachkräfte in der saudischen Vertretung
Um es kurz und grob zusammenzufassen: Das Königshaus agiert nach den langjährigen Erfahrungen, die Bradley im Land gesammelt hat, wie die Mafia. Wer dort ist, darf nicht austreten oder er ist des Todes. Das ist ein Motiv, mit dem Bradley die Ermordung Khashoggis erklärt. Kritik wird nicht geduldet
Offensichtlich hat die saudische Führung die unangenehmen Folgen der mutmaßlichen Tötung des saudischen Dissidenten Jamal Khashoggi unterschätzt. Nun sucht die Führung nach einem Sündenbock.
Im Dreieck Ankara–Riad–Washington ist einiges in Bewegung gekommen; auf vielen Ebenen dürfte gegenwärtig verhandelt werden, und zwar auch, um zu verhindern, dass der Fall Khashoggi vollends zu einer Großkrise wird. Schon jetzt belastet er die saudisch-amerikanischen Beziehungen. Weil die so eng sind, geraten sie unter Rechtfertigungsdruck – zu Recht.
Offensichtlich hat die saudische Führung um den Thronfolger Muhammad Bin Salman die Weiterungen der mutmaßlichen Tötung (Ermordung?) des saudischen Dissidenten unterschätzt. So wie sie die technischen Fähigkeiten der türkischen Sicherheitsbehörden zum Abhören und zum Ausspähen unterschätzt hat.
Schon früh hat die türkische Regierung Riad Mord vorgeworfen. Zwei Wochen lang wies Saudi-Arabien den Vorwurf barsch zurück. Und jetzt wird an einer Darstellung des Geschehens gearbeitet, welche Riad, also niemanden anderen als den Thronfolger, von Verantwortung dafür freispricht, dass Khashoggi im saudischen Konsulat zu Tode gekommen ist?
Ein Verhör sei aus dem Ruder gelaufen, Agenten hätten auf eigene Faust gehandelt. Präsident Trump hatte am Montag ominös von einem „rogue killer“ gesprochen. Das hörte sich schon nach Sprachregelung an. Warum aber wurde Khashoggi, der wegen seiner geplanten Heirat ins Konsulat gekommen war, überhaupt verhört? Womöglich gefoltert? Weil er die saudische Politik und den selbstherrlichen Thronfolger kritisierte; weil er dem Absolutismus den Spiegel vorhielt. Vor allem die ökonomische Elite wirkt seltsam überrascht, dass der eigentlich so wohlgelittene wirtschaftliche Partner Saudi Arabien vielleicht doch gar nicht so nett und unproblematisch ist. Das wiegt umso schwerer, als Saudi-Arabien in den vergangenen Jahren ein gern gesehener Investor war.
Doch die öffentliche Entzauberung des „wirtschaftlichen Liberalisierers“ MBS offenbart nun, wie groß und verzweigt das ökonomische Netzwerk der Saudis inzwischen ist.
In Tagen wie diesen wird das zum geschäftsschädigenden Problem. Und so kommt es, dass es für die hochrangig besetzte Wirtschaftskonferenz Future Investment Initiative, die in der kommenden Woche stattfindet, plötzlich Absagen regnet. Wollte MBS auf dem Forum in der Wüste aller Welt präsentieren, wie er sich die Zukunft seines Landes vorstellt, werden nun wichtige Wirtschaftslenker nicht dabei sein.
Mein Kommentar: Dass man das nicht schon längst erkannt hat (Stichwort: Jemen) ist schon bewusste Verdrängung.

Saudi-Arabien werde als Partner im Kampf gegen den "Terrorismus" und im Vorgehen gegen den Iran gebraucht, sagte Trump in einem am Mittwoch ausgestrahlten Interview dem Fernsehsender Fox Business.
Der US-Präsident hob erneut die wirtschaftliche Bedeutung des Königreichs als Absatzmarkt für Rüstungsgüter hervor. Mit Riad laufe derzeit ein "enormer" US-Rüstungsauftrag im Umfang von 110 Milliarden Dollar (95 Milliarden Euro). Bereits vergangene Woche hatte Trump gesagt, er wolle Sanktionen gegen Riad vermeiden, die eine Reduzierung der US-Rüstungslieferungen zur Folge hätte. Diese Aufträge schüfen Jobs in den USA, betonte er.
Trump bestritt, dass er Riad für ein mögliches Verbrechen "Deckung geben" wolle. "Überhaupt nicht, ich will nur herausfinden, was passiert", sagte er am Mittwoch auf Reporterfragen im Weißen Haus. Er äußerte die Erwartung, dass bis Ende der Woche "wahrscheinlich" geklärt sei, was mit Khashoggi geschehen ist.
Die Untersuchung des Falls überlässt die US-Regierung allerdings vorerst Riad selbst. Außenminister Mike Pompeo sagte am Mittwoch nach einem Besuch in Saudi-Arabien, die dortige Führung habe eine "vollständige und transparente Untersuchung" zugesagt.

Mein Kommentar: Zum letzten zitierten Satz: darum geht es den USA mit Sicherheit nicht. Die USA wollen unter allen Umständen eine „Lösung“ finden (vertuschung, Verdrängung), die es ihnen möglich macht, die sache mittelfristig völlig vergessen zu machen und mit den Saudis so eng verbandelt zu bleiben wie vorher auch.

Türkische Medien berichten über immer mehr mögliche Details zum Verschwinden des Journalisten Khashoggi. So soll er erst gefoltert und dann enthauptet worden sein. US-Außenminister Pompeo machte sich in Ankara ein Bild.
Im Fall des in Istanbul verschwundenen Journalisten Jamal Khashoggi werden immer mehr mögliche Details bekannt. Die türkische Zeitung "Yeni Safak" berichtete unter Berufung auf eine angebliche Audioaufnahme von dem Geschehen, saudiarabische Agenten hätten dem regierungskritischen Journalisten während eines Verhörs die Finger abgeschnitten und ihn später enthauptet.
Auf der Aufnahme soll zu hören sein, wie der saudiarabische Konsul Mohammed al-Otabi sagt: "Macht das draußen, ihr werdet mir Probleme bereiten." Daraufhin habe ihm ein Mann erwidert: "Wenn du leben willst, wenn du nach Saudi-Arabien zurückkehrst, sei still." Al-Otaibi verließ am Dienstag Istanbul in Richtung Riad. Das regierungsnahe Blatt "Yeni Safak" erklärte nicht, woher die Audioaufnahme stammte oder wie es daran gekommen ist.
Die türkischen Behörden gehen nach Medienberichten davon aus, dass Khashoggi im Konsulat von einem aus Saudi-Arabien angereisten 15-köpfigen Spezialkommando getötet wurde.
Siebenminütiger Todeskampf
Die Internet-Seite "Middle East Eye" berichtete, dass der Todeskampf von Khashoggi sieben Minuten gedauert haben soll. Der Autor des entsprechenden Berichtes bezog sich auf eine türkische Quelle, die die Audioaufnahme gehört haben soll. Kashoggi soll zunächst geschrieen haben, bis ihm eine Substanz injiziert worden sei.
Türkische Sicherheitsdienste haben wiederholt regierungsfreundliche Medien des Landes benutzt, um Details zu dem Fall an die Öffentlichkeit zu geben und den Druck auf Saudi-Arabien zu erhöhen. Saudi-Arabien weist die Vorwürfe zurück.
Neben dem Konsulat steht auch der Wohnsitz des saudischen Konsuls im Fokus der Ermittlungen. Ein Team von elf Ermittlern ist inzwischen an der Residenz des Konsuls angekommen, um die Anlage nach Spuren abzusuchen. Das berichtete der Fernsehsender CNN Turk. Der türkische Außenminister Mevlüt Cavusoglu sagte, die Türkei hoffe, dass die Ermittler das Gelände heute noch betreten dürfen.

Der Mord an Jamal Khashoggi stellt die Zukunft des Kronprinzen infrage Der Fall Khashoggi hat längst die Ebene verlassen, auf der er vor gut zwei Wochen begann: ein mutmaßliches Verbrechen an einem kritischen Publizisten, der nicht nur einfach umgebracht wurde – dazu hätte man ein Kommando anheuern können, das irgendwo zuschlägt und keine Spuren hinterlässt –, sondern der offenbar der sehr persönlichen Vendetta eines Regimes zum Opfer fiel. Die Folgen auf nationaler saudischer und auf internationaler Ebene sind noch gar nicht abzusehen. Zuerst einmal sorgte der Schauplatz Istanbul dafür, dass die Tat sofort eine politische Dimension bekam: Saudi-Arabien und die Türkei sind nicht nur historische Konkurrenten, sondern stehen sich im aktuellen Streit innerhalb des sunnitischen politischen Islam – Salafisten versus Muslimbrüder – gegenüber. Aber darüber hinaus ist etwas passiert, womit die Auftraggeber des Mordes nicht gerechnet haben: Der Fall wurde zur Gretchenfrage für viele Staaten, allen voran die USA, was ihr Verhältnis zum Königreich Saudi-Arabien betrifft.
Die ganze furchtbare Geschichte ist eine Fehlkalkulation von MbS, wie Mohammed bin Salman allgemein genannt wird, die viel über ihn selbst aussagt. Der rasant aufgestiegene Lieblingssohn von König Salman ist einer der wenigen hochrangigen saudischen Prinzen, die sich nie länger im Ausland aufgehalten haben. Er kennt die Welt nicht, hat nicht die Mechanismen der internationalen Politik verstanden.
Nun meinen manche Beobachter, dass MbS damit seine eigene politische Zukunft zerstört hat. In den USA, die in diesem Fall eine Schlüsselrolle spielen, bekommt Präsident Donald Trump Druck sogar aus der eigenen Partei, schließlich hat der saudische Journalist in den USA gelebt und für die renommierte "Washington Post" geschrieben. Wenn selbst dieser Druck nicht für Aufklärung sorgt, was denn dann?
Doch bei Trump, der seit seinem Amtsantritt die Saudis gewähren lässt, verblasst die rote Linie bereits. Ja, Trump schickte seinen Außenminister nach Saudi-Arabien und die Türkei. Aber die Gespräche in Saudi-Arabien waren auffallend freundlich. Und ein US-Senator schrieb auf Twitter zu Recht, es sei schon außergewöhnlich, in welchem Maße sich Trump zum Sprachrohr der Saudis macht.
Aber Trump hat eben Interessen. Es geht um milliardenschwere Rüstungsdeals und Saudi-Arabien als Partner gegen den Iran. Das will Trump nicht riskieren.

Saudi-Arabien ist in Erklärungsnot: Täglich werden neue, grausame Details in der Affäre um den verschwundenen Journalisten Jamal Khashoggi veröffentlicht. Die Quellen dafür sind aber oft fragwürdig.
Für die USA steht viel auf dem Spiel im mysteriösen Fall des verschwundenen Journalisten Jamal Khashoggi. US-Präsident Donald Trump setzt im Nahen Osten gegenwärtig vor allem auf einen Verbündeten: den jungen saudischen Kronprinzen Mohammed bin Salman, auch bekannt unter seinen Initialen "MBS".
Der aber steht besonders im Fokus, seit der saudi-arabische Kritiker Khashoggi am 2. Oktober in Istanbul das Konsulat seines Heimatlandes betreten hat und seither nicht mehr gesehen wurde. Der Verdacht: MBS habe die Ermordung angeordnet.
Das hat er zwar in einem Telefonat nach Angaben von Trump "absolut bestritten" und versprochen, "in Kürze" Antworten auf die vielen offenen Fragen zu liefern. Doch so recht glauben kann das niemand.
Ein Grund: Tag für Tag kommen neue, schaurige Details an die Öffentlichkeit. Der Fernsehsender CNN berichtetezu Wochenbeginn, dass die Regierung in Riad eine Erklärung vorbereite, wonach Khashoggi an den Folgen eines Verhörs starb, das "außer Kontrolle geriet".
Killerkommando mit engen Verbindungen zu MBS?
Einem Bericht der "New York Times" zufolge stammen einige der mutmaßlichen Täter aus dem direkten Umfeld von MBS. Die Zeitung beruft sich bei ihren Recherchen unter anderem auf Gesichtserkennung, Profile in sozialen Netzwerken und saudische Regierungsdokumente, die an die Öffentlichkeit lanciert wurden.
Demnach soll ein Verdächtiger den Kronprinzen bei dessen Auslandsreisen oft begleitet haben unter anderem in die USA, nach Frankreich und Spanien. Möglicherweise ist er ein Bodyguard des 33-jährigen Kronprinzen.
Ein zweiter saudi-arabischer Staatsbürger, der vor Ort gewesen sein soll, sei von Beruf Arzt - Spezialgebiet: Gerichtsmedizin - und drei weitere Männer sollen zum Sicherheitsteam von MBS gehören.
Insgesamt sollen neun der fünfzehn Verdächtigen in unterschiedlichen zivilen und militärischen Funktionen für den Wüstenstaat tätig sein.
Viele Details, die in den vergangenen 14 Tagen veröffentlicht wurden, stammen aus türkischen Medien, die mehr oder weniger regierungstreu sind.
Laut "Yeni Safak" gibt es zudem eine Audiodatei, auf der die Stimme des Konsuls zu hören sein soll. Er forderte die mutmaßlichen Mörder darin angeblich auf, die "Befragung" nicht im Konsulat durchzuführen, woraufhin diese ihm geantwortet hätten: "Halt die Klappe, wenn Du nach Deiner Rückkehr nach Saudi-Arabien leben willst".

Die Spuren des Mordes führen zum saudischen Kronprinzen
Für US-Präsident Donald Trump muss die Schuld Saudi-Arabiens noch bewiesen werden – doch türkische Ermittler gehen im Fall Chaschukdschi in die Offensive. Teile der Untersuchung werden bekannt.
Neun Stunden haben türkische Ermittler das saudische Konsulat in Istanbul nach Spuren durchsucht, um den Verbleib des verschwundenen Journalisten Dschamal Chaschukdschi zu klären. Kein einfaches Unterfangen: Kurz bevor die Polizei das Gebäude betrat, seien mehrere Räume frisch gestrichen worden, sagte der türkische Präsident Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Während der US-Präsident für den saudischen Verbündeten die Unschuldsvermutung beschwört, gelangen weitere Details der türkischen Untersuchung an die Öffentlichkeit.
Konsul soll Mord beigewohnt haben
Die Tonaufnahme des mutmaßlichen Mordes, die den Ermittlern vorliege, belege nicht nur, dass der saudische Generalkonsul anwesend gewesen sei – auch die grausamen Details der Tat seien durch den Mitschnitt nachvollziehbar, berichtet das "Wall Street Journal".
Demnach habe Chaschukdschi das Konsulat wegen einer Pass-Angelegenheit betreten und sei wenige Minuten danach im Büro des Generalkonsuls geschlagen, unter Drogen gesetzt und dann getötet worden. Täter sollen Mitglieder eines extra dafür aus der saudischen Hauptstadt Riad eingeflogenen Killerkommandos sein. Anschließend habe ein Forensikspezialist den Konsul Mohammad al-Otaibi aus dem Raum gebeten. Anderen Anwesenden habe er empfohlen, etwas Musik zu hören, während er die Leiche zerstückelte. Dann habe er zur Knochensäge gegriffen. Die Überreste des Journalisten seien in Koffern aus dem Gebäude geschafft worden.
Bericht mit Teilgeständnis geplant?
Die saudi-arabische Führung soll in den vergangenen Tagen erwogen haben, die Tat einzuräumen – und einen Bericht zu veröffentlichen, der den Tod Chaschukdschis als Folge eines missglückten Verhörs darstellt, das von "schurkenhaften Agenten" ohne Billigung der Führung durchgeführt wurde.
Die Anwesenheit des Generalkonsuls passt nicht in diese Darstellung – ebenso wenig wie Berichte der "New York Times". Demnach stammen mehrere Verdächtige aus dem direkten Umfeld des saudischen Kronprinzen Mohammad bin Salman. Das habe die Auswertung von Gesichtserkennung, Profilen in sozialen Netzwerken, Medienberichten und internen saudischen Regierungsdokumenten ergeben. Im Fall des verschwundenen arabischen Journalisten Jamal Khashoggi sollen Verdächtige einem Medienbericht zufolge dem Umfeld des saudischen Kronprinzen Muhammed Bin Salman angehören. So habe ein Verdächtiger namens Maher Abdulasis Mutreb den Kronprinzen in diesem Jahr bei Reisen in die Vereinigten Staaten, nach Spanien und Frankreich begleitet, berichtete die „New York Times“ am Dienstagabend. Möglicherweise handle es sich um einen Leibwächter.
Drei andere Verdächtige würden ebenfalls dem Sicherheitsdienst des Kronprinzen zugerechnet, schreibt die „New York Times“. Bei einem weiteren Verdächtigen handle es sich um einen Gerichtsmediziner, der in Saudi-Arabien hohe Ämter bekleidet habe. Von den 15 Verdächtigen, welche die türkischen Behörden ausgemacht haben, hätten mindestens neun für saudische Sicherheitsdienste, die Armee oder Ministerien gearbeitet.
Die „New York Times“ beruft sich bei ihren Angaben auf Software zur Gesichtserkennung, eine Datenbank mit saudischen Handy-Nummern, öffentliche saudische Regierungsdokumente, Zeugenaussagen und Medienberichte. Sollten sich die Angaben der „New York Times“ bewahrheiten, würde dies die Verteidigungslinie der saudischen Führung und des Kronprinzen schwächen und auch Amerika in eine schwierige Situation bringen.

Türken weiten Khashoggi-Ermittlungen aus - Pompeo in Riad
Im Bemühen um Aufklärung im Fall des seit zwei Wochen verschwundenen saudiarabischen Journalisten Jamal Khashoggi erhöhen die USA und die Türkei den Druck auf Riad. Laut Ankara kam womöglich Gift zum Einsatz. US-Aussenminister Pompeo traf König und Kronprinz.
Die Polizei in Istanbul weitete am Dienstag ihre Ermittlungen aus und kündigte nach dem saudiarabischen Konsulat auch eine Durchsuchung der Residenz des Konsuls an. Nach Angaben von Präsident Recep Tayyip Erdogan prüften die Ermittler unter anderem, ob in dem Fall Gift eine Rolle gespielt haben könnte.
US-Aussenminister Mike Pompeo versuchte derweil im Auftrag von Präsident Donald Trump, sich in Riad ein Bild von der Lage zu machen. Er traf unter anderen König Salman und den Kronprinzen Mohammed bin Salman, der wiederholt Regierungskritiker festnehmen liess.
Der Fall sorgte zunehmend für Verunsicherung an den Märkten. Sowohl die saudiarabische Börse als auch die Landeswährung gaben zwischenzeitlich deutlich nach, bevor sie sich wieder etwas erholten.
Erdogan sagte vor Journalisten, die Ermittler gingen "vielen Dingen nach, wie etwa toxischen Materialien und solchen Materialien, die entfernt wurden, indem sie übermalt wurden". Er bezog sich auf die neunstündige Durchsuchung des saudiarabischen Konsulats in der Nacht zum Dienstag. Er hoffe, dass so bald wie möglich Schlussfolgerungen gezogen werden könnten, "die uns eine vernünftige Meinung liefern".
Bei der Durchsuchung des Konsulats waren Experten zur Spurensicherung mit vier Spezialfahrzeugen vor Ort. Sie stellten Bodenproben und eine Metalltür zur weiteren Untersuchungen sicher. Auch ein Spürhund der Polizei war im Einsatz.
Medienberichten zufolge sollte das Konsulat im Laufe des Tages erneut durchsucht werden. Uno-Menschenrechtskommissarin Michelle Bachelet sprach sich dafür aus, dass im Fall Khashoggi die diplomatische Immunität aufgehoben werde.
CNN berichtete, Saudi-Arabien bereite eine Erklärung vor, dass Khashoggi ohne Genehmigung verhört worden sei. Demnach soll das Verhör des "Washington Post"-Kolumnisten ausser Kontrolle geraten und der Regierungskritiker dabei gestorben sein. Die Verantwortlichen sollten zur Rechenschaft gezogen werden.
Die "New York Times" berichtete dagegen, dass Kronprinz Mohammed bin Salman einem Verhör oder einer Überstellung von Khashoggi zurück nach Saudi-Arabien zugestimmt habe. Die Regierung in Riad wolle den Prinzen schützen, indem sie einen Geheimdienstmitarbeiter für den vermasselten Einsatz verantwortlich mache, hiess es in der Zeitung weiter.

Die türkischen Polizisten kamen um kurz nach sieben Uhr am Montagabend in das Generalkonsulat Saudi-Arabiens in Istanbul. Neun Stunden und zehn Minuten später, um 4.25 Uhr, waren sie wieder draußen. Die Durchsuchung war zuvor auf höchster Ebene mit der saudischen Regierung in Riad vereinbart worden. Die Spezialisten suchten nach DNA-Spuren, Blutresten und allem, was ein Beweis dafür sein könnte, dass der saudi-arabische Journalist und Regimekritiker Jamal Khashoggi am 2. Wenig Hoffnung auf ein Abrücken der US-Regierung
Das Verschwinden und die mögliche Ermordung des Journalisten Jamal Khashoggi beschert Saudi-Arabien negative Schlagzeilen, die der eigenen Imagekampagne entgegen wirken. Der Politologe Ali Fathollah-Nejad kritisiert die mangelnde Kritik an Riad.
von Billerbeck: Warum hat der saudische Kronprinz offenbar solche Angst vor Khashoggi, dass er das große Risiko einer Bloßstellung Saudi-Arabiens eingegangen ist und da diese Geschichten erzählt?
Fathollah-Nejad: Das eine hat was mit Khashoggis Hintergrund zu tun, das andere mit der Ungestraftheit von saudischen Aktionen und dem Mangel an Kritik im Westen vor allen Dingen. Bezüglich des Ersteren muss man hervorheben, dass Jamal Khashoggi ungefähr drei Jahrzehnte lang wichtige Rollen gespielt hat innerhalb des saudischen Königshauses, innerhalb des Herrschaftsapparats sozusagen. Er war ganz zu Anfang Berater vom ehemaligen Geheimdienstchef der Saudis. Später war er Journalist und war in den Medienapparat quasi involviert, und hatte aus diesen Positionen heraus natürlich Insiderwissen, das nicht ein normaler Dissident oder Oppositioneller gehabt hat.
Er selbst war auch erst, nachdem ich ihn kennengelernt habe, zu einem Kritiker geworden und hat vor allen Dingen den Machtanspruch des Kronprinzen Mohammed bin Salman in Frage gestellt und kritisiert, dass durchaus mehr Leute innerhalb der Entscheidungsfindungsprozesse in Saudi-Arabien involviert werden sollten. Das andere ist natürlich die Ungestraftheit von Aktionen, die in der Zeit von Mohammed bin Salman zutage getreten sind.
Fathollah-Nejad: Es gab sicherlich in vielen westlichen Medien eine Verzerrung des Reformanspruchs des Kronprinzen. Einerseits ist es richtig, dass er gewisse Reformen eingeleitet hat. Aber gleichzeitig sieht man am Beispiel der Frauen – in der Frauenbewegung wurden ja auch sehr viele Frauenaktivisten innerhalb dieser Reformzeit festgenommen.
Also war es sicherlich eine sehr autoritäre Modernisierung, die er durchgeführt hat. Und nicht nur, dass die Menschenrechtslage innerhalb Saudi-Arabien sich nicht verbessert hat, sondern, wie vorhin auch erwähnt, führt Saudi-Arabien weiterhin einen sehr brutalen Krieg im Nachbarland Jemen. Und Saudi-Arabien hat sicherlich eine Imageverbesserung gewollt, und es gab sicherlich auch im Westen sehr viele, die da mitgespielt haben. Aber der Fall von Khashoggi führt vor Augen, dass es sehr oberflächlich war, was wir wahrgenommen haben.

Ein Mord und eine Apple Watch
Wo ist Khashoggi? Ein Journalist, den ein gekränkter saudi-arabischer Prinz beseitigen lässt, und westliche StaatsführerInnen, die lieber schweigen.
Und jetzt?, fragt man sich und stellt sich gleichzeitig vor, ein solcher Verdacht bestünde gegen Putin. Nicht auszudenken wäre der mediale Aufschrei! Einige westliche Konzerne und Medienvertreter überlegen (!) nun, so liest man, einen Wirtschaftsgipfel im Oktober zu boykottieren, der ein Prestige-Event von Kronprinz bin Salman sei.
Ich kann nicht beurteilen, wie weh es einem Land wie Saudi Arabien tut, wenn ein paar Firmen aus Deutschland oder den USA auf die Performance dieser Veranstaltung verzichten. Wahrscheinlich passiert aber gar nichts und wahrscheinlich tauchen sie letztlich doch alle auf, die deutschen Waffenhersteller mit ihren schönen deutschen Waffen, damit sie ihren besten Kunden nicht verlieren.
Die Tat ist inzwischen zwei Wochen her. Auf offene Konfrontationen wartet die Öffentlichkeit bisher vergeblich, so hanebüchen die Vorgänge auch sind. Können die beteiligten Regierungen - und alle mit Saudi Arabien wirtschaftlich verbandelten Regierungen sind beteiligt - sich das leisten? Einen mutmaßlichen Mord durch den Landeshäuptling in Riad unbeantwortet zu lassen, um der "wirtschaftlichen Stabilität" Willen? Mohammed bin Salman jedenfalls scheint überzeugt, dass die finanzielle Macht seines Königreichs ausreicht, um mit jedem noch so bestialischen Verbrechen davonzukommen. Preist Angela Merkel sein Land doch nach wie vor, im Widerspruch zu den Berichten des deutschen Auslandsgeheimdienstes, als "Stabilitätsanker im Nahen Osten" ...
Was die Glaubwürdigkeit westlicher LandesführerInnen angeht: In Sachen Doppelmoral als Gradmesser für politisches Handeln unterscheiden sie sich nur in Abstufung von einem absolutistischen Terrorstaat wie Saudi Arabien, das ist es, was die politisch mitdenkende BügerIn einmal mehr zu realisieren hat.

US-Senatoren sprechen sich gegen Rüstungsverkäufe an Saudi-Arabien aus
US-Senatoren haben erklärt, dass sie in der jetzigen Situation einem Gesetz über Waffenverkäufe an Saudi-Arabien nicht zustimmen werden.
Dianne Feinstein, republikanische Abgeordnete aus dem US-Bundesstaat Kalifornien sagte in diesem Zusammenhang, sie werde in der gegenwärtigen Lage keinem Entwurf zustimmen, wenn es um Rüstungsverkäufe an Saudi-Arabien geht. Außerdem unterstützt Feinstein die Militärhilfen ihres Landes an die saudische Regierung im Jemen-Konflikt nicht.
Laut der US-Senatorin blickt die Weltgemeinschaft ungläubig auf Nachrichten, die von der Ermordung und Zerstückelung des regierungskritischen saudischen Journalisten Jamal Khashoggi sprechen.
Zwei weitere republikanische US-Senatoren aus den Bundesstaaten Florida und Arizona, Marco Rubio und Jeff Flake, die auch als effektive Mitglieder der Außen- und Justizausschüsse des US-Senats gelten, sprachen sich ebenso gegen Waffenlieferungen an Saudi-Arabien aus.
Zwei Wochen nach dem Verschwinden Khashoggis ist in den USA die Zahl der Unterstützer für Waffenlieferungen an Saudi-Arabien drastisch zurückgegangen.

Skripal und Saudi-Journalist: Selten wurden die Doppelstandards der Bundesregierung so deutlich
Legt man die Reaktion der Bundesregierung auf das mutmaßliche Skripal-Attentat als Messlatte an, dann müsste es jetzt Sanktionen gegen Saudi-Arabien hageln. Doch diesmal betonte der Regierungssprecher: “Wir können doch nicht Ermittlungsergebnissen vorgreifen.”
Als am 4. März 2018 der ehemalige russische Doppelagent Sergej Skripal zusammen mit seiner Tochter Julia bewusstlos in der englischen Stadt Salisbury aufgefunden wurde, dauerte es nicht lange, bis die britische Regierung behauptete, die Skripals seien einem Attentat mittels des Nervengiftes Nowitschok “aus russischer Produktion” zum Opfer gefallen.
Auf Grundlage der britischen Behauptungen wurden in weiterer Folge Dutzende russische Diplomaten aus EU-Ländern ausgewiesen. Auch die Bundesregierung wies “als Signal der Solidarität” vier russische Diplomaten aus, bevor die britischen Strafermittler überhaupt mit ihren Ermittlungen begonnen hatten. Bis heute verweist die Bundesregierung, ohne weitere Belege anzuführen, auf die “hohe Plausibilität” der Schuld Russlands.
Ganz anders stellt sich die Reaktion der Bundesregierung im Fall des mutmaßlich im saudischen Konsulat von Istanbul ermordeten Exil-Journalisten Dschamal Chaschukdschi dar…
(…) Begründet wird die Zurückhaltung von Regierungssprecher Seibert mit dem Verweis darauf, man wolle “möglichen Ermittlungsergebnissen” nicht vorgreifen. Die Frage von RT Deutsch, wieso die Bundesregierung jetzt im Fall des saudischen Journalisten die Ermittlungsergebnisse abwarten will, aber in der Causa Skripal nicht gezögert hatte, Diplomaten auszuweisen, ohne dass dazu bereits Ermittlungsergebnisse vorlagen, beantwortete der Regierungssprecher auf seine ganz eigene Weise.. Dietmar Bartsch, Die Linke: Inakzeptable Doppelstandards in der deutschen Außenpolitik
Mit seinen sehr schnellen Verurteilungen im Fall des Ex-Agenten Skripal, der einen Giftanschlag überlebte, hat Bundesaußenminister Heiko Maas einen Maßstab gesetzt, an dem die Bundesregierung sich messen lassen muss im Fall des regimekritischen Journalisten Khashoggi, über dessen mögliche Ermordung im saudi-arabischen Konsulat in Istanbul immer grausigere Details der türkischen Ermittler in Medien berichtet werden. Was für inakzeptable Doppelstandards in der deutschen Außenpolitik! Die Nibelungentreue der Bundesregierung gegenüber dem saudi-arabischen Regime muss ein Ende haben. Eine sofortige Aussetzung aller Waffenexporte an Saudi-Arabien, das in Jemen einen brutalen Krieg führt, bis zur Aufklärung des Falls Khashoggi wäre ein überfalliges Signal aus Berlin, dass Deutschland die Politik des saudischen Königshauses missbilligt.

Saudi suspect in Khashoggi case ‘dies in car accident’: Report
A Turkish newspaper reported on Oct. 18 that one of the suspects involved in the disappearance of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi died in a “suspicious car accident” in Riyadh.
Mashal Saad al-Bostani, a 31-year-old lieutenant of the Saudi Royal Air Forces, was among the 15 suspects who arrived and left Turkey on Oct. 2 after going to Saudi Arabia’s Istanbul consulate when Khashoggivisited there, according to daily Yeni Şafak.
The newspaper said sources did not release any details about the traffic accident in Riyadh and Bostani’s role in the “murder” was not yet clear.
Daily Hürriyet columnist Abdulkadir Selvi claimed on Oct. 18 that Saudi Arabia’s Istanbul consul Mohammad al-Otaibi could be “the next execution” as Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman “would do anything to get rid of evidence.”

Turkish forensic teams search Saudi consulate for clues on Jamal Khashoggi
Investigators wearing white white suits and carrying boxes of evidence emerged from the building early on Thursday morning.
Turkish forensic teams searched the Saudi consulate in Istanbul overnight as the investigation into the disappearance and alleged murder of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi deepened.
Early Thursday, investigators wearing white forensic suits and blue gloves emerged from the building in an upscale neighborhood the the city. They loaded boxes and plastic and paper bags onto white vans.
Turkish Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gül later pledged that the investigation would shed light on what happened, adding that "whatever the international law requires will be done."
Gül told Turkish state news agency Andalou that the case was being investigated "thoroughly" and that the results of the investigation were expected "soon."
On Wednesday, Turkish forensic police followed Saudi investigators into the residence of the Saudi consul for the first time. The search by the Turkish team included the roof and the deployment of a drone over the area which is a ten minute walk from the consulate. Footage from the scene showed investigators using ultraviolet lights to look for stains.

Trump says US has asked for Khashoggi tapes
But US president says he does not want to walk away from Saudi Arabia
Donald Trump said the US had asked for a recording of Jamal Khashoggi’s purported killing “if it exists”, but stressed that Washington did not want to walk away from Saudi Arabia as it comes under mounting pressure over the case. Asked if the US had requested video or audio evidence of Mr Khashoggi’s death, Mr Trump said on Wednesday: “We have asked for it, if it exists. We have asked.” He was speaking as Mike Pompeo, US secretary of state, returned from a trip to Turkey and Saudi Arabia that highlighted the US’s desire to balance concern over Mr Khashoggi with a desire to preserve economic and security ties to Saudi Arabia. In a separate interview with Fox Business Network, the US president said: “We need Saudi Arabia in terms of our fight against all of the terrorism, everything that’s happening in Iran.”

MEE reveals the military ranks of Saudi men suspected of killing Jamal Khashoggi - and their close links to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
Seven of the 15 men suspected of being involved in an operation to kill Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi belong to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s personal security and protection detail, Middle East Eye can reveal.
The suspects went and ate dinner at the Saudi consul-general’s residence after murdering and dismembering Khashoggi inside the consulate, a source in the Istanbul Prosecutor General’s office also told MEE on Wednesday as Turkish police finally gained access to the building on Wednesday.
Most of them are high-ranking officers who accompanied the crown prince on diplomatic visits to the UK and France earlier this year.
MEE has obtained a document from the Saudi Interior Ministry detailing their ranks, dates of birth, passport and telephone numbers and when they accompanied bin Salman on trips abroad. All of them are members of the crown prince’s Special Security Force.
MEE is not publishing the document in order to protect the safety of its sources.
Confirmation that these seven members were high-ranking members of the crown prince’s close protection team and travelled with him on high profile visits regularly will complicate efforts currently under way to distance bin Salman from the murder investigation in Istanbul.
Suspected 'coordinator'
Mutrib, the highest ranked officer among the seven named on the interior ministry document, has been identified by investigators as the "coordinator of the operation", according to MEE's Turkish sources.
They say that Mutrib chartered the two private jets for the mission and was one of two suspects to travel on diplomatic passports.
Mutrib has previously been identified by the New York Times as a diplomat assigned to the Saudi embassy in London based on a British foreign office diplomatic list dating from 2007.
The newspaper also tracked down photographs of Mutrib standing guard next to the Crown Prince during visits to Spain, France and the US.
In this document Mutrib is referred to as a “communications engineer” and a “security companion” of the crown prince.
Two of the names on the list are not identified as having accompanied bin Salman on his visits to London and Paris.
The latest revelations about bin Salman’s close links to seven of the 15 suspects are likely to further raise suspicions about what the crown prince knew, and whether an operation involving high-level members of his own security detail could have been sanctioned without his knowledge or express orders.
Officially the crown prince, who is also defence minister, controls all three of Saudi’s armed forces, the defence ministry, the national guard, and the interior ministry.

Jamal Khashoggi murder suspect studied forensic medicine in Australia in 2015
A doctor suspected of killing and dismembering dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi trained at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine in Melbourne after being sponsored by the Saudi Government.
Dr Salah al-Tubaigy was identified by Turkish authorities as one of 15 men present in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, when Khashoggi is suspected to have been assassinated.
Turkish authorities suspect Khashoggi was murdered inside the consulate after being ambushed by a team travelling from Saudi Arabia.
Dr Tubaigy was carrying a bone saw when he flew in and out of Istanbul, authorities said.
The ABC has confirmed Dr Tubaigy spent three months at the institute as a forensic pathologist from June 2015.
Dr Tubaigy told the institute he was particularly interested in mass disaster victim identification as he was responsible for the supervision of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, Professor Woodford said.
Dr Tubaigy also had an interest in autopsies, according to reviews of his published works.

Turkey yet to share Khashoggi audio, video evidence with U.S.: sources
Turkey has not shared with the U.S. government or key European allies graphic audio or video evidence it allegedly collected on U.S.-based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s visit to Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul, seven U.S. and European security officials told Reuters.
Turkish pro-government newspaper Yeni Safak published on Wednesday what it said were details from audio recordings purportedly documenting Khashoggi’s torture and interrogation.
It reported that his torturers severed his fingers during an interrogation, and that Khashoggi was killed within minutes. According to the report, his body was later beheaded and dismembered by his killers.
A New York Times report on Wednesday cited a senior Turkish official confirming the details published by Yeni Safak. Two Turkish government officials contacted by Reuters declined to confirm the report.

Saudis Plan to Pin Khashoggi Slaying on ‘Rogue’ General
Sources tell The Daily Beast the Saudis are settling on a fall guy to distance their crown prince from the killing of a dissident. And their cover story appears DOA to observers.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is starting to float a trial-balloon explanation for its apparent slaying of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, The Daily Beast has learned, in hopes of escaping the consequences of an episode that has shaken whatever geopolitical confidence existed in Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
According to two sources familiar with the version of events circulating throughout diplomatic circles in Washington, the Saudis will place blame for Khashoggi’s murder on a Saudi two-star general new to intelligence work. That line is in keeping with President Donald Trump’s Twitter-borne speculation that “rogue killers” may be responsible for whatever happened to Khashoggi inside Saudi Arabia’s Istanbul consulate on Oct. 2. Three other former U.S. officials did not have direct knowledge of the inchoate Saudi line but told The Daily Beast they expect Riyadh to blame a fall guy.
The Saudis are considering admitting that the general received approval from the Crown Prince to interrogate Khashoggi on the suspicion that he was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist political faction whose rise during the Arab Spring prompted the Saudis and their allies in the United Arab Emirates to sponsor a wave of reaction. They also are considering intimating that Khashoggi received money from Gulf rival Qatar.
But, the Saudi story continues, this overeager general exceeded bin Salman’s intentions. He improvised a rendition to send Khashoggi from Turkey back to Saudi Arabia—and botched it, killing him. Then he lied to his Saudi superiors about what happened.
It is a far cry from the initial Saudi line that its culpability for Khashoggi’s death amounted to “lies and baseless allegations.” But retired U.S. ambassadors, intelligence officials and regional experts are already signalling that the line is a nonstarter.
“If this is a rogue operation, the rogue is MBS,” said Barbara Bodine, a retired U.S. ambassador to Yemen, using the ubiquitous acronym for the Saudi Crown Prince.
“It’s not going to wash,” said Bruce Riedel, a former CIA official at the Brookings Institution deeply attuned to Gulf politics. “It’s ludicrous in the extreme. Saudi Arabia doesn’t work that way. They don’t freelance operations.”
Kristine Coratti Kelly, a representative for the Washington Post, where Khashoggi was a columnist, said, “We’re not going to dignify the efforts by various officials to distract from the question of accountability by smearing a good man.”
Severely complicating any blame-shifting narrative the Saudis may put forward is the presence of royal guards in a 15-man team that arrived at the Istanbul consulate hours after Khashoggi entered. “Who dispatched the royal guards, which report to MBS?” Riedel said, who added that the difference between an intentional slaying and a torture session brutal enough to kill Khashoggi was merely “the difference between first and second-degree murder.” – by Kimberly Dozier, Spencer Ackerman

MBS’s rampaging anger will not silence questions about Jamal Khashoggi
Inside his royal palace in Riyadh, Mohammed bin Salman is said to have alternated between dark brooding and rampaging anger in the days after the death of Jamal Khashoggi, as Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, or MBS, as he is widely known, looked for someone to blame for what Turkish officials have said was the journalist’s grisly murder.
One possible scapegoat, according to several sources, may be Maj. Gen. Ahmed al-Assiri, the deputy chief of Saudi intelligence. Assiri “has made numerous approaches to MBS on taking actions against Khashoggi and others,” said one source who is familiar with Western intelligence reports.
The U.S. government learned last month that Assiri was planning to create a “tiger team” to conduct covert special operations, I’m told, though officials didn’t know the targets. U.S. intelligence also learned, but only after Khashoggi’s disappearance after entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2, that the crown prince had told his subordinates this summer that he wanted Khashoggi and other Saudi dissidents brought home.
The emerging Saudi narrative appears to be that the palace authorized Khashoggi’s arrest and interrogation but not his murder. This version has some obvious holes: If the goal was “rendition” back to Saudi Arabia (as it is politely termed), then why interrogate him in Istanbul? And why did a forensics expert allegedly join the 15-man Saudi team photographed arriving at Istanbul airport? Finally, will such a Saudi account hold up under intense scrutiny by Congress, the media and, perhaps, U.S. courts?
The darkening mood inside MBS’s palace in recent months shows a crown prince facing economic pressure and tightening his circle of advisers.
MBS’s key counselor is said to have been Saud al-Qahtani, the crown prince’s media adviser but also increasingly his consigliere in the kingdom’s battles with foreign adversaries such as Qatar and Iran as well as domestic critics. Like his boss, Qahtani is considered young and headstrong.
MBS’s tight inner circle has helped him push modernization efforts, such as reducing the power of the religious police, allowing women to drive and opening movie theaters and other public entertainment. But his team of palace advisers has often amplified, rather than challenged, the crown prince’s worst impulses.
This breakdown was evident immediately after Khashoggi’s disappearance, when official Saudi statements were all happy talk. Behind the scenes, says one knowledgeable source, “MBS went into a funk for several days after learning of Khashoggi’s death before re-emerging on a rampage of anger around what happened and trying to figure out a response.”
Surrounded by yes-men who saw suppressing dissent as part of a media war, and rattled by the reversal of his dreams for economic reform, MBS moved toward the fateful moment when Khashoggi entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. An insider reveals the full story of how and why the decision to capture Jamal Khashoggi alive or dead was most likely taken by Mohammed bin Salman.
This was not a straightforward snatch and grab attempt. The officers sent to Istanbul to deal with Jamal Khashoggi were given clear instructions; return with Khashoggi alive or kill him there.
That order did not come from any senior general or bureaucrat, but straight from the de-facto head of the largest Royal family in the world that controls the world's largest proven oil reserves.
When he decided to move into self-exile, Khashoggi told his closest friends he wasn't a person who could stand jail or torture.
But during his exile, he became increasingly lonely. His wife at the time, under pressure from the unabated traditional and social media onslaught against him directed by the sinister royal advisor Saud al-Qahtani, requested a divorce and a near broken Jamal acquiesced.
Having forced a rupture in Jamal's life, the powers in Riyadh thought that they had neutralised one of the key public figures who had threatened them, simply by being independent.
Yet neither the split nor his exile prevented Jamal from continuing to seek new ways to deliver his message.

The inner peace that Jamal found infuriated and enraged the rash and impulsive Mohammed bin Salman. Surrounded by a coterie of aggressive, eager to please loyalists with little experience, his anger reached untold limits.
With an almost chronic addiction to social media, the crown prince would scour the virtual newsfeeds daily on his iPad, to examine firsthand the impact of the campaigns engineered by his adviser.
With all the resources that eight million barrels of oil a day bring, being unable to stop Khashoggi's influence was a constant reminder of the limits of authoritarianism against unrestricted freedom.
Greater anger still was channeled against his people; ludicrous TV shows made outlandish claims about any independent figure on social media and spent hours devoted to playing up MbS' genius, vision and appeal.
Having publicly humiliated and demoted the strongest royal in the kingdom to become crown prince, MbS had effectively wiped out all opposition within the family. And with a list of disgruntled Saudi royals courtesy of Jared Kushner, he was able to target every one of them, removing them from public posts, scaring them into fleeing or imprisoning them in what was the greatest protection racket in history.
Yet some royals escaped. Chief among them was Ahmed bin Abdulaziz.
There are other Saudi royals out there, less in seniority to Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, yet also sons and nephews of kings. It is their reaching out to Jamal, relayed to MbS by his fawning apparatchiks, that created an incendiary environment in his office and led to that death warrant.
Members of MbS' personal elite squad - Al-Ajrab Sword Brigade - began working with colleagues from the General Intelligence service and forensic experts to plan their move.
As soon as reports came from the consulate in Turkey that he had come in to ask for divorce papers, Riyadh set things in motion. He was told to come back after a week in which all logistics were planned out and overseen by MbS and his advisers. Alive or dead, finishing within an hour was imperative.
On the fateful day in which Jamal entered the Saudi consulate, an unsuspecting consul, used to stamping visas and chain smoking into the night in Istanbul's cafes was given a rude awakening as a team of officials entered the consulate with a royal authorisation to access all areas.
Not imagining what would happen next, the confused bureaucrat spent minute making small talk with Jamal until MbS' operatives officers came into the office and asked Jamal to come with them.
Khashoggi saw his worst fears materialise.
Recordings point to a near hysterical man trying to flee while shouting for help, but to no avail. While his drugging could have killed him immediately, this came after a struggle and he died as the shell-shocked consul general looked on.

Audio Offers Gruesome Details of Jamal Khashoggi Killing, Turkish Official Says
Saudi agents were waiting when Jamal Khashoggi walked into their country’s consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago. Mr. Khashoggi was dead within minutes, beheaded, dismembered, his fingers severed, and within two hours the killers were gone, according to details from audio recordings described by a senior Turkish official on Wednesday.
The government of Turkey let out these and other leaks about the recordings on Wednesday, as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Ankara, in an escalation of pressure on both Saudi Arabia and the United States for answers about Mr. Khashoggi, a prominent Saudi dissident journalist who lived in Virginia and wrote for The Washington Post.
The new leaks, which were also splashed in lurid detail across a pro-government newspaper, came a day after Mr. Pompeo and the Trump administration had appeared to accept at face value the promises of the Saudi rulers to conduct their own investigation into Mr. Khashoggi’s disappearance — regardless of Turkish assertions that senior figures in the royal court had ordered his killing.
As the Saudis and the Americans tried to put the crisis behind them, the brutality described in the leaks served as a reminder of why Mr. Khashoggi’s disappearance has triggered an international backlash more severe than countless mass killings or rights violations.
But Turkish officials on Wednesday reiterated their conclusion that a team of 15 Saudi agents, some with ties to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was waiting for Mr. Khashoggi inside the Saudi Consulate the moment he arrived, at about 1:15 p.m. on Oct. 2.
After he was shown into the office of the Saudi consul, Mohammad al-Otaibi, the agents seized Mr. Khashoggi almost immediately and began to beat and torture him, eventually cutting off his fingers, the senior Turkish official said, describing the audio recordings.
Whether Mr. Khashoggi was killed before his fingers were removed and his body dismembered could not be determined.
But the consul was present and objected, the official said. “Do this outside. You will put me in trouble,” Mr. Otaibi told the agents, according to the Turkish official and a report in the Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak. Both cited audio recordings said to have been obtained by Turkish intelligence.
“If you want to live when you come back to Arabia, shut up,” one of the agents replied, according to both the official and the newspaper.

Middle East Eye publishes first details of audio tape acquired by Turkish investigators probing what happened to Saudi journalist
It took seven minutes for Jamal Khashoggi to die, a Turkish source who has listened in full to an audio recording of the Saudi journalist's last moments told Middle East Eye.
Khashoggi was dragged from the Consul General’s office at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and onto the table of his study next door, the Turkish source said.
Horrendous screams were then heard by a witness downstairs, the source said.
"The consul himself was taken out of the room. There was no attempt to interrogate him. They had come to kill him,” the source told MEE.
The screaming stopped when Khashoggi - who was last seen entering the Saudi consulate on 2 October - was injected with an as yet unknown substance.
Salah Muhammad al-Tubaigy, who has been identified as the head of forensic evidence in the Saudi general security department, was one of the 15-member squad who arrived in Ankara earlier that day on a private jet.
Tubaigy began to cut Khashoggi’s body up on a table in the study while he was still alive, the Turkish source said.
The killing took seven minutes, the source said.
As he started to dismember the body, Tubaigy put on earphones and listened to music. He advised other members of the squad to do the same.
“When I do this job, I listen to music. You should do [that] too,” Tubaigy was recorded as saying, the source told MEE.
A three-minute version of the audio tape has been given to Turkish newspaper Sabah, but they have yet to release it.
A Turkish source told the New York Times that Tubaigy was equipped with a bone saw. He is listed as the president of the Saudi Fellowship of Forensic Pathology and a member of the Saudi Association for Forensic Pathology.
In 2014, London-based Saudi newspaper Asharaq al-Awsat interviewed Tubaigy about a mobile clinic that allows coroners to perform autopsies in seven minutes to determine the cause of death of Hajj pilgrims.
The newspaper reported that the mobile clinic was partly designed by Tubaigy and could be used in "security cases that requires pathologist intervention to perform an autopsy or examine a body at the place of a crime”.

President Trump warns against finding Riyadh ‘guilty until proven innocent’ in the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi
Saudi operatives beat, drugged, killed and dismembered a dissident Saudi journalist in the presence of the kingdom’s top diplomat in Istanbul, Turkish officials said Tuesday, as Washington urged Riyadh to provide answers.
Mr. Trump has put Saudi Arabia and its crown prince at the center of a Middle East policy aimed at challenging Iran, Riyadh’s main rival in the region, brokering an end to the Palestinian-Israeli crisis and countering extremism.
In an interview with the Associated Press Tuesday, Mr. Trump compared the allegations that Saudi agents had killed Mr. Khashoggi to the accusations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was sworn in last week after a bruising confirmation process. “Here we go again with, you know, you’re guilty until proven innocent,” Mr. Trump said. “We just went through that with Justice Kavanaugh and he was innocent all the way as far as I’m concerned.”
Turkish officials said they shared evidence in recent days, including the details of an audio recording, with both the U.S. and Saudi Arabia to support their conclusion that Mr. Khashoggi was killed at the hand of Saudi operatives. It wasn’t clear how Turkish officials had an audio recording.
The recording indicates how Mr. Khashoggi was killed in the office of the Saudi consul general, Mohammad al-Otaibi, minutes after he walked into the consulate building on Oct. 2, said people familiar with the matter. Mr. Khashoggi wasn’t interrogated, the people said. Instead, he was beaten up, drugged and killed by Saudi operatives who had flown in from Riyadh earlier in the day, the people said.
Then, on the recording, a voice can be heard inviting the consul to leave the room, the people familiar with the matter said. The voice of a man Turkish authorities identified as Saudi forensic specialist Salah Al Tabiqi can be heard recommending other people present to listen to some music while he dismembered Mr. Khashoggi’s body, the people said.
Turkish investigators spent nine hours searching for clues inside the Saudi diplomatic premises on Monday and early Tuesday. Complicating the search, said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was the fact that some rooms had been freshly repainted.
The latest Turkish allegations could complicate the Saudi government’s efforts to provide an explanation of what happened to Mr. Khashoggi while distancing itself from any direct responsibility.
On Monday, Saudi authorities had weighed whether to declare that unauthorized operatives killed Mr. Khashoggi during a botched interrogation, according to people familiar with the situation. It wasn’t known whether they were still considering that.
Turkish officials have said they suspect the Saudi crown prince had a hand in Mr. Khashoggi’s disappearance because some of the operatives who took part in the alleged killing appear to have ties to him. Turkish investigators have focused on a pair of Gulfstream jets that landed in Istanbul on Oct. 2 and flew back to Riyadh on Oct. 3 after layovers. The planes belong to a company, Sky Prime Aviation Services Ltd., that was seized by the Saudi government after its anticorruption drive last year.

Friend of Jamal Khashoggi: Journalist 'killed in a very barbaric way,' according to Turkish officials
In his first sit-down interview with U.S. media, a close friend of Jamal Khashoggi, the Washington Post columnist who disappeared after being seen entering a Saudi consulate in Istanbul more than two weeks ago, described to ABC News what he'd been told in briefings by Turkish security officials.
"I talked with some Turkish government and security officials and they said Jamal was killed. I didn't know what to do. I really couldn't answer. Then I called a few colleagues, again security officials, trying to have them verify it, saying 'Is this really true?'" Turan Kislakci said Wednesday. "They said, 'Yes, Turan, and let's tell you even beyond that, he was killed in a very barbaric way.' I was shocked. They not only kill him in the consulate, but also in a barbaric way." (with film)

Khashoggi probe: Turkish forensics team to search consul-general's residence
Source tells MEE the consulate has been meticulously searched, with particular attention focused on soil samples from the garden
Turkish investigations into the presumed murder of Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul resumed on Tuesday, with investigators due to enter the consul-general’s house nearby.
On Monday, a team of Turkish investigators and forensics experts entered the consulate 13 days after the prominent Saudi journalist was last seen walking into the building.
They spent nine hours searching the building, security sources told Middle East Eye, and took samples of soil from the garden.
According to the sources, these samples will be a priority of the investigation.
A Turkish source involved in the investigation told MEE the probe on Monday had been meticulous.
“We went inside all the rooms, without any exceptions. We got into the exclusively protected rooms with high-level security where they have their cryptosystems, also the rooms which are secured against any audio recordings,” the source said.
“We got everything we wanted and took it with us out of the consulate to continue investigation. We didn’t dig the garden but searched it with dogs and took some samples.”
According to the source, the investigators took hammers to some walls and flooring to explore behind them.
Turkish investigators had been poised to enter the consulate for days, however the Saudis rescinded their offer of cooperation after the identities of a “hit squad” of 15 Saudis suspected of being involved in Khashoggi’s murder were leaked to the press.
There was also disagreement over whether investigators would be allowed into the consulate-general’s house.
Although the Saudis acquiesced to Turkish demands to probe the consulate and consul-general’s house, investigators were not allowed into the residency last night.

Passport scans show Saudis accused by Turkey of killing writer Jamal Khashoggi
Turkey is revealing new information about members of the Saudi hit team it says traveled to Istanbul to kill missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi, providing NBC News with scans of the passports they allegedly used to enter the country.
The scans, obtained by NBC News from Turkish officials, show the photo-and-bio pages of seven Saudi passports that Turkish officials say belonged to seven of the 15 Saudis who arrived in Istanbul ahead of Khashoggi’s disappearance.
The names and ages match those who were included on a list of the 15 Saudi suspects published last week by the Turkish pro-government newspaper Sabah.
Turkish officials said it was possible that the passport scans of the remaining eight members of the team will be released at a later date. The Washington Post, where Khashoggi was a columnist, first obtained the scans.

Suspects in disappearance of Khashoggi linked to Saudi security services
Three days before Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman arrived in the United States earlier this year for a nationwide tour, another Saudi traveler who identifies online as a member of the Saudi Royal Guard also arrived in Washington, passport records show. His stay overlapped with that of the prince.
Two times before that, this traveler had made other trips to the United States that coincided with visits by top members of the Saudi royal family, including King Salman and another one of his sons.
That same traveler, Khalid Aedh Alotaibi, has now appeared on a list provided by Turkish officials of 15 Saudis who Turkey alleges participated in the disappearance and alleged killing of prominent journalist Jamal Khashoggi
Alotaibi is one of 11 Saudis included on the list who have ties to the Saudi security services, according to their posts on social media, emails, local media reports and other material reviewed by The Washington Post.
According to the Turkish account and flight information, the 15 men arrived in Istanbul on Oct. 2 — most of them early in the morning — and then departed in the hours after Khashoggi’s disappearance.
With President Trump suggesting that Khashoggi might have died at the hands of “rogue killers,” attention has increasingly focused on the identities of the men on the list and their reported links to the Saudi government, security services and the crown prince himself.
Alotaibi and eight others identified as suspects by Turkish officials appear to have profiles on MenoM3ay — a phone directory app popular in the Arab world — identifying themselves as members of the Saudi security forces, with some claiming to be members of the Royal Guard.
In one instance, Alotaibi identified himself with a symbol for the Royal Guard.
Five of the eight others are repeatedly identified in the app as either officers in the Royal Guard or employees of the royal palace.
Two of the Saudis on the list, Naif Hassan S. Alarifi and Saif Saad Q. Alqahtani, are repeatedly identified in the app as even closer to the royal family — specifically as employees of the “Crown Prince office.”
Another one of the suspects who appears to identify himself on the app as a member of the Saudi security forces is Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb.
Another man identified by Turkish officials is Muhammed Saad Alzahrani, who is also identified on the app as a member of the Royal Guard.
Among the most prominent names on the Saudi team list is Salah Muhammed al-Tubaigy, a forensic expert known for pioneering rapid and mobile autopsies, who flew into Istanbul shortly after Khashoggi entered the Saudi Consulate and flew out nine hours later, Turkish officials say.
Tubaigy, 47, is a top professor in the criminal evidence department at Naif Arab University for Security Sciences. He presides over master thesis classes on identifying bones through DNA analysis and how the use of formaldehyde limits genetic tissue analysis.

The New York Times has confirmed independently that at least nine of 15 suspects identified by Turkish authorities worked for the Saudi security services, military or other government ministries.
How much blame for Mr. Khashoggi’s disappearance or death settles on the 33-year-old crown prince has become a decisive factor in his standing in the eyes of the West and within the royal family.

First of all, he has confirmation that some type of audio recording of the killing exists, and was expecting it to come out. However, that has not been the case. President Trump offered embattled Saudi Arabia a suggestion of support Tuesday amid mounting pressure over the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, saying the kingdom is being judged “guilty until proven innocent.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that Saudi officials did not want to discuss the facts of journalist Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance in their meetings with him.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Wednesday following talks with Saudi Arabia’s king and crown prince about the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
After meeting with King Salman and the crown prince on Tuesday, Pompeo told reporters that Saudi Arabia has committed to conducting a complete investigation into Khashoggi’s disappearance.
How the crown prince, often referred to as MbS, emerges from the Khashoggi disappearance is a test of how the West will deal with Saudi Arabia in the future. At issue will be to what extent the West believes responsibility for Khashoggi lies with the powerful young ruler.

Turkey's Erdogan says some material at Saudi consulate painted over
Some materials at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul where journalist Jamal Khashoggi disappeared two weeks ago have been painted over, Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday.
Speaking after Turkish police entered the consulate for the first time and searched the premises for nine hours, Erdogan also told reporters that they were looking into toxic materials at the mission.
“My hope is that we can reach conclusions that will give us a reasonable opinion as soon as possible, because the investigation is looking into many things such as toxic materials and those materials being removed by painting them over,” Erdogan told reporters in Ankara.
A Turkish diplomatic source said the investigators planned to widen their search on Tuesday to the residence of the Saudi consul.

We speak with Ali al-Ahmed, a Saudi dissident and founder and director of the Institute for Gulf Affairs. He was a political prisoner in Saudi Arabia when he was 14 years old—the youngest political prisoner at that time.
ALI AL-AHMED: Well, as we have known from the Turkish sources, and these are my sources close to the government and close to the investigation, is—and the person I spoke to is a person who actually heard the audio of the murder, and he said everything is clear. And the Turkish government was supposed to release it, but they may be negotiating with the Saudis. And it shows—the collection of videos, and the audio specifically, shows Mr. Khashoggi was killed just hours after he entered the consulate, and then dismembered. And the audio shows who actually did the work of this gruesome act, this ISIS-style murder. And then the body parts were distributed in different bags and then moved to the house of the consulate and other places, and maybe some were taken out of the country, as well.
So you are looking at very convincing evidence of this murder happening inside the Saudi Consulate, with the knowledge of the consular himself and those 15 Saudis who flew in on Saudi royal jets to carry out the work. And they did not cover their tracks very—you know, they didn’t try. They wanted this message to be known. They wanted the world, and their followers specifically, given that Mr. Khashoggi was a loyalist and continued to be a supporter of the monarchy—he was only critic of the crown prince—they wanted to send this gruesome message that if you oppose us, if you criticize us, we will do this to you in public.
Remember, in Saudi Arabia, every week the Saudi government carries out these public executions that they don’t need to do in the streets, but to cut people and behead them in the street is intended to spread fear among the population. And what happened to Mr. Khashoggi is just another example. It’s almost a public beheading of a loyalist-turned-critic to scare those loyalists in the palace from doing the same. And that message is intended—and premeditated murder of Khashoggi—is intended to do that effect. And the West and the international community in general has enabled this by supporting this dictatorship for 60 years. And this is the result, what you have.
So the Saudi-Egyptian-Emirati alliance has a problem with Turkey. Turkey hosts dissidents from these countries, especially from Egypt, where they even have TV stations and so on. This has happened after the coup in Egypt in 2013. There is an intention to have this split and increasing clash with Turkey with these countries. And I think that’s why they chose Turkey.
You’re absolutely right. My information so far indicates that Mr. Khashoggi, who lives in Washington, did try to get these papers done in Washington, and he could have in normal circumstances, but he was told to go to Turkey. And that indicates that the embassy here and the ambassador here is somewhat involved in this murder. And that’s why I don’t think the U.S. government should let him come back again. This was a plan that took a while. They thought about it. But the kill team here was connected to Mohammed bin Salman, because two of his bodyguards are part of that team that killed, and one of them actually is the person who cut up the body. There are two of them who did the cutting. One of them is MBS’s own bodyguard.
The U.S. definitely had that information and did not share it with him, and they bear part of the responsibility, because the man is dead, and in a horrific manner, and those people here sitting in Washington knew something was being planned. A team of investigators entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on Monday for what Turkish officials called a joint inspection of the building where Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi disappeared nearly two weeks ago.
The team arrived by unmarked police cars at the consulate and said nothing to journalists waiting outside as they entered the building. Police then pushed back journalists from the front of the consulate, where they've been stationed for days, setting up a new cordon to keep them away.

As one reporter joked, "the way to preserve the integrity of a possible crime scene and bolster confidence in the investigation is to bring in a bunch of cleaners through the front door before the detectives arrive."
What does it say about the credibility of an investigation when a cleaning crew fully equipped with boxes of chemicals, mops, trash bags, and... milk arrives at the scene of the alleged crime right before the probe begins?
At around the same time Saudi King Salman insisted in a Monday morning phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump that his regime had nothing to do with the disappearance and alleged murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi—a denial Trump dutifully echoed to reporters while suggesting that perhaps "rogue killers" were behind the gruesome crime—video cameras captured a team of cleaners hauling several buckets of mops, two large cases of trash bags, Dixi cleaning solution, another carton of what appears to be bleach, and two cases of Pinar milk through the front door of Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul.
The cleaning crew was seen entering the consulate shortly before Turkish investigators were set to arrive to carry out an "inspection" in search of additional evidence of who was behind the disappearance of Khashoggi, a frequent critic of the Saudi royal family.
If the Saudis were concerned about the optics of a well-prepared cleaning crew arriving on the scene of an alleged murder just moments before the start of an investigation that is being closely watched by the international community, they did not show it—the crew walked in the front entrance of the consulate in full view of Reuters and Associated Press cameras and journalists.
Independent reporter Borzou Daragahi joked in a tweet that "the way to preserve the integrity of a possible crime scene and bolster confidence in the investigation is to bring in a bunch of cleaners through the front door before the detectives arrive."

Saudis preparing to admit Jamal Khashoggi died during interrogation, sources say
The Saudis are preparing a report that will acknowledge that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's death was the result of an interrogation that went wrong, one that was intended to lead to his abduction from Turkey, according to two sources.
One source says the report will likely conclude that the operation was carried out without clearance and transparency and that those involved will be held responsible.
One of the sources acknowledged that the report is still being prepared and cautioned that things could change.
CNN reporters saw Turkish investigators, including forensics officers, entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul Monday evening. Saudi officials granted permission for the premises to be searched, a Turkish diplomatic source told CNN. Police were seen cordoning off the area before investigators arrived. Turkish officials also wanted to search the nearby consul general's residence.

Trump sends Pompeo to Riyadh over Khashoggi; Saudis may blame official
Saudi Arabia is preparing to acknowledge the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in a botched interrogation, CNN and the New York Times said on Monday, after U.S. President Donald Trump speculated “rogue killers” may be responsible.
Citing two unidentified sources, CNN reported on Monday that Saudi Arabia is preparing a report that would acknowledge Khashoggi was killed as the result of an interrogation that went wrong. The Saudi government could not be reached immediately for comment on the CNN report.
“I heard that report, but nobody knows if it’s an official report,” Trump told reporters, without elaborating.
The New York Times, citing a person familiar with the Saudi plans, reported the crown prince had approved an interrogation or rendition of Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia. The Saudi government, it said, would shield the prince by blaming an intelligence official for the bungled operation.
Saudi Arabia has strongly denied killing Khashoggi and has denounced such assertions as “lies,” saying he left the building shortly after entering.
“The king firmly denied any knowledge of it,” Trump told reporters after speaking with King Salman. “He didn’t really know, maybe - I don’t want to get into his mind but it sounded to me - maybe these could have been rogue killers. Who knows?”
The U.S. president gave no evidence to support the theory. Democratic lawmakers criticized Trump for using the term “rogue killers”.
“Been hearing the ridiculous ‘rogue killers’ theory was where the Saudis would go with this,” Democratic U.S. Senator Chris Murphy said on Twitter.
“Absolutely extraordinary they were able to enlist the President of the United States as their PR agent to float it.”
KING ORDERS INVESTIGATION
Trump called Pompeo on Sunday night and asked him to have face-to-face meetings with the Saudi leaders, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.
Trump said Pompeo may go to Turkey after Saudi Arabia.

Trump says 'rogue killers' may be behind Khashoggi disappearance
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday “rogue killers” may have been behind the disappearance of prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and Saudi Arabia’s King Salman ordered an internal investigation into the case.
Trump said he had spoken with King Salman about Khashoggi, a critic of Saudi policies, and that he was sending Secretary of State Mike Pompeo immediately to meet the king and travel to other places as needed.
“The king firmly denied any knowledge of it,” Trump told reporters. “He didn’t really know, maybe - I don’t want to get into his mind but it sounded to me - maybe these could have been rogue killers. Who knows?”
A joint Turkish-Saudi team was set to search the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, where Khashoggi was last seen on Oct. 2.
A Turkish diplomatic source said investigators would inspect the consulate on Monday afternoon, after delays last week when Turkey accepted a Saudi proposal to work together to find out what happened to Khashoggi.
“It has been 13 days since the event, so surely proving some of the evidence might be difficult, but we believe we will obtain evidence,” the Turkish official said.
A Saudi official, not authorized to speak publicly, told Reuters that the king had ordered an internal investigation based on information from the joint team in Istanbul.

Why claims Khashoggi's Apple Watch recorded alleged murder are unlikely
Experts have dismissed claims that a recording of the alleged killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi may have been transmitted using his Apple Watch.
But the Apple website indicates that a cellular connection is not available for its smartwatches in Turkey. And another page says it "isn't possible for Apple Watch to roam outside a user's carrier network coverage area." Tests carried out by CNN confirm that an Apple Watch with a data plan from another country will not work in Turkey.
Unlike with the iPhone, the company says there isn't a worldwide Apple Watch model that supports all cellular bands used globally.
