Sanaa government reopens 60th -50th road to Taiz city unilaterally

the local authority in Taiz province, which is affiliated with the Sanaa government, inaugurated on Saturday the opening of the 60th -50th road leading to Taiz city, for the first time since the start of the war.

This road has been under the control of armed factions loyal to Saudi-led coalition during the years of war.

The opening of the road came at a unilateral initiative announced by Sanaa, after it was not possible to reach an agreement to open the corridors to the cities, as the factions loyal to the coalition insist on opening roads of a military nature, as Sanaa says.

The governor of Taiz appointed by the Sanaa government, Salah Bajash, announced the opening of the fifty-sixty road, starting from this morning, Saturday.

Bagash said in a press statement: “The fifty-sixtieth road to the city of Taiz has become safe on our part for travelers and citizens,” he said, holding “the other party is responsible for the safety of travelers and citizens.”

Al-Masirah TV channel aired scenes showing the moments of the inauguration of the traffic on the road

Making the Most of Yemen’s Uneasy Truce

Personnel changes to the official Yemeni government, coupled with the recent truce between the warring parties, have presented Yemen with a major opportunity for advancing a lasting peace after years of perilous conflict. Such shifts should be lauded for their significance, given the past difficulties of brokering any agreement to halt the fighting. That said, the truce in effect today is not an end in it of itself, but rather a means to enforce durable peace. Serious doubts—although cautious hope—regarding the efficacy of the current agreement remain, as the country reaches a moment that may prove to be critical to its future.

Generally, the implementation of the truce has gone smoothly, though shortcomings have emerged.

The hurdles in enforcing the truce go beyond port access. It took weeks for the first flight to leave Sanaa on May 16, following disagreements over travel documents. In particular, the Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of providing members of Hezbollah with doctored Houthi documents to travel to Yemen. At the point of writing, the parties have not met the objective of two flights per week set out by the ceasefire agreement.

Ultimately, these issues are far less meaningful and significantly less tenuous than the ongoing negotiations on the fate of Taiz.

Nadwa Dawsari, non-resident Scholar at the Middle East Institute, explained this dynamic, “the Houthis simply refused to open the main roads. They presented a proposal to open some dirt roads which would not have made any difference or reduced the suffering of civilians. Reports indicate that the Houthis sent a letter to OSESGY (Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen) basically indicating that they insist on either opening the roads they proposed or nothing.”

Even with such setbacks, the level of violence has decreased substantially across the country.

During its brief existence, the truce has already improved humanitarian access in Yemen.

Difficult Prospects for Peace

Ultimately, improving the humanitarian situation necessitates adhering to the current ceasefire and urging follow-on talks; the single best way to improve the humanitarian and human rights situation in Yemen is to end the war. The issue at hand is whether the parties involved believe that peace is the best policy to achieve their goals.

Current events suggest that there is space for cautious optimism, though the window of opportunity to achieve lasting and effective change is closing. Saudi Arabia desires an honorable exit from the war. Though this ambition is hardly realistic as Riyadh has garnered lasting reputational harm because of its military operations in Yemen, international leaders and institutions should encourage the Saudis to follow this path if it leads to negotiations to end the war.

Meanwhile, the UAE probably prefers a weak Yemeni neighbor in which it can meddle. The UAE also desires control over strategic Yemeni islands like Socotra. De facto control over these features would enhance the UAE’s importance in maritime security. Keeping Yemen weak, meanwhile, ensures that no missiles fly over Abu Dhabi. This is critical given Saudi and Emirati support of specific individuals on the PLC and suggests that these states are working toward ending the war and sustaining their influence – the latter of which could be detrimental to a lasting peace.

In fact, the Houthis have provided plenty of reasons to doubt the seriousness of any truce they enter. There are many reports of Houthi military buildup and some skirmishes in key frontline areas.

Looking ahead, peace talks must advance beyond the truce stage quickly; in other words, this war will only end if all actors in Yemen view peace—not war—as the best way to achieve acceptable, non-zero-sum goals. Taiz is the next step in this regard. Oman has done well guiding the Houthis through meetings and mediation—a result of the former’s longstanding neutrality on most regional issues—and should continue to play a central role in diplomacy. Simultaneously, Washington should continue to pressure the coalition on human rights. The United States should also seek to bolster the PLC’s functionality and expand its relationships with civil society and communities in its areas of control through development aid.

However, the approach highlighted above is not guaranteed to succeed.

Doors of truce with Saudi Arabia will not remain open forever, warns Yemen [Sanaa gov.]

The doors of truce between Yemen and Saudi Arabia will not remain open forever, warns the head of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council, as Sana’a accuses the Riyadh-led military coalition of continuously violating a UN-brokered ceasefire that went into force three months ago.

Mahdi al-Mashat said in remarks on Friday that the “enemy’s exploitation of the truce” to extend its siege against the Yemeni people is “unacceptable,” the Lebanese al-Mayadeen news network reported.

“The doors of the truce will not remain open,” he said after making clear that “our Yemeni people will not accept [the violations] under any circumstances.”

According to Mashat, the constant violations of the truce by the Saudi-led war coalition and its mercenaries have put the armistice at a crossroads.

He then warned that the issue may lead to a return to military operations.

“Our acceptance of the truce and its extension is to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people and is with the aim of reaching a comprehensive solution that ends the aggression and lifts the siege completely,” he stated.

Yemen: Government reopens key roads

Unilateral step aims to ease Yemenis’ hardships

Yemen’s internationally recognised government has unilaterally reopened major roads in the war-wracked country ahead of the Eid Al Adha feast and amid a UN-brokered truce with the Iran-aligned Al Houthi rebels.

The government forces Thursday reopened a route linking the port city of Al Mukha to Taiz in south-western Yemen, the official news agency Saba reported.

Yemeni Information Minister Moammar Al Eryani, who attended the reopening ceremony, said the step reflects the government’s keenness to ease hardships for people in Taiz, which has been under a long-running siege imposed by Al Houthis.

“Opening the road cuts distances and saves a lot of time for passengers,” he added.

“Opening roads is a humanitarian aspect that does not require agreements, but the Al Houthi militia uses it as a strategy to double people’s suffering and considers this a military gain,” Al Eryani added.

Earlier, the government authorities unilaterally reopened another vital road linking Taiz and Hudaidah in western Yemen.

They opened up the road between Hodiedah and Taiz , a road that passes through Hais district in Hodiedah. This comes after Houthis announced unilaterally opening up a branch road in Taiz while they set a new condition for opening a main road as proposed by UN envoy. The condition was that the city of #Taiz should be cleared from“ armed militia “, referring to government forces.

Film: Opening of main road linking Al-Dhalea and Sana'a, in response to request of UN envoy

In response to UN request for the opening of main roads in Yemen, the committee in charge of opening main roads linking Al-Dhalea, Qataba, Al-Fakher, Ibb, Maris, Damt and Sana'a, made a field visit this morning (Thursday 7th) to launch the initiative for opening main roads in order to mitigate citizens’ suffering over the past three years as a result of the closure, in addition to high costs of transporting goods between those governorates. The governor of Al-Dhalea, Major General Ali Muqbel Saleh, confirmed that local government leadership in Al-Dhalea, Joint Forces and Southern Resistance, took the initiative today to open roads from their side, adding that now the ball is in the court of concerned parties who should take the initiative and open main roads.

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE UN SPECIAL ENVOY HANS GRUNDBERG ON OPENING ROADS IN TAIZ AND OTHER GOVERNORATES

The parties have a responsibility to ease the suffering of civilians and facilitate their safe freedom of movement. The parties have also committed under the terms of the truce to meet under UN auspices to agree on road openings in Taiz and other governorates. A UN facilitated process provides the parties with a platform for a sustainable and credible negotiated approach to opening roads. Agreement from both sides is important because road openings require coordination and ongoing communication between different sides to ensure safe and sustainable passage for civilians. It is a long-term process and not a one-time action.

Following initial rounds of negotiations held with the parties in Amman and subsequent bilateral discussions, on 3 July my Office shared an updated proposal on the phased opening of roads. Phase 1 includes four roads in Taiz, including a road also advocated for by Yemeni civil society, which will help alleviate civilian suffering and should be opened immediately. Phase II includes the parties’ commitment to open main roads in Taiz and other governorates, including Marib, Al Baydah, Al Jawf, Al Hodeidah and Al Dhale’. We continue to engage with both sides and we urge them to respond positively to this proposal. This will provide a signal of their political will, their investment in the truce and their commitment to find ways to ease the burden on the Yemeni population.

U.N. reveals plan amended to open roads in Taiz, other Yemeni provinces: Report

Sanaa is initiating, and the Saudi-led coalition is intransigent

Abdul Karim Shaiban, the head of the coalition-backed government’s negotiating delegation, had hinted in press statements about their rejection of the UN plan, accusing the United Nations of adopting the proposals made by the Sanaa negotiating delegation to open roads in stages.

In this context, Mohammed Abdul-Salam, head of the Sanaa negotiating delegation, explained on Twitter that 3 proposals made to open roads in Taiz and other provinces were rejected by the other party, which is basically various parties.

He noted that the coalition side dealt with the road file with exploitation and extortion that the “Supreme Political Council and the Competent Committee” prompted to initiate its humanitarian step, prioritizing the interests of the citizens over anything else.

[Aden] Yemen government slams new ‘one-sided’ UN proposal on Taiz

The [Aden] Yemeni government said it was not consulted beforehand on the proposal, which it considers “biased” toward the Houthis.

Abdul Kareem Shaiban, head of the government’s delegation at the talks in Amman, said the envoy’s new proposal has taken into consideration Houthi demands by suggesting opening only small roads that do not alleviate the suffering of tens of thousands of people who live under the Houthi siege.
“He should have sat with us before announcing the proposal that has removed the demand for opening the main road known as Softeel, which connects Taiz with Aden and Sanaa,” he told Arab News by telephone. “We are back where we started.”
Shaiban said the Yemeni government delegation was not invited to Amman to discuss the new proposal, slamming the UN envoy for abandoning his first proposal and approving the Houthi demands.

Responding to the government’s criticism, the office of the UN Yemen envoy told Arab News that Grundberg has intensely engaged with both parties to push for the full implementation of the truce’s elements, including opening roads in Taiz, stating that new proposals or ideas on related issues are discussed with both sides.
“Draft proposals and options to open roads in Taiz and other governorates have been presented and discussed with both parties. The UN underlines the need to demonstrate the political will to reach an agreement soo

[Sanaa] Supreme Political Council Announces Unilateral Opening of Roads in Taiz

The Supreme Political Council announced a unilateral initiative to open the Fifty-Sixty road in Taiz, in order to alleviate the suffering of the people of Taiz and other governorates. It pointed out that this step came after consulting with the National Military Committee, with great efforts to open roads in Taiz and other governorates.

The Council helds the militias in Taiz responsible for obstructing the opening of the road, and any attack on the safe travelers there. It called on the people of Taiz to defend their roads and reveal those who obstruct the opening.

In early June, the National Salvation Government announced the implementation of a unilateral initiative, to raise the earthen barriers in preparation for the opening of a road inside the city of Taiz.

Negotiations of opening roads in Jordan are without outcomes after a 2-round discussion. The National Committee says that the talks do not go beyond limited roads in Taiz.

The Saudi-backed party does not have a decision to talk about the rest of the roads and closed outlets, which is a short conception of comprehensive solutions that include closed outlets in more than one governorate, including Al-Dhalae and Marib.

General al-Razzami regrets that the other party did not attend Amman negotiations

The Head of the [Sanaa gov.] National Military Committee, Major General Yahya Al-Razzami, expressed his regret for the failure of the other party to adhere to and attend negotiations and discussions of violations of the UN armistice monitoring the ceasefire and the opening of roads, in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan under the auspices of the United Nations.
At a press conference held Thursday at Sana'a International Airport upon his and members of the Committee's return from Jordan today, General al-Razzami said: "We made a lot of proposals during the previous round, and regrettably we were surprised that the other party did not attend, despite our agreement to do so and their justification for not being invited by the United Nations, we blame the United Nations for the other party's lack of commitment to attend."
He added, "We raised to the leadership in Sana'a the procrastination and the inaction of the other party and their failure to attend, and the United Nations is aware of this and did not play its role or issue a clear position in the initiative that we presented during the first round in opening three roads as a first stage."
"We have been informed by the leadership in Sana 'a that it is best to open appropriate roads in phases without the need or waiting for any consent from the other party or even the care of the United Nations because we are keen that this step is within the framework of an understanding between all parties under the auspices of the UN to facilitate the opening of roads and address some of the imbalances that may occur, but we will do this plan by us."

Saudi Arabia reiterates need to open Taiz crossings, secure peace in Yemen: Statement

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign reiterated in a statement on Thursday the importance of opening humanitarian crossings in Yemen’s Taiz.

The statement also showed appreciation for the efforts of UN Special Envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg for strengthening the commitment to the current UN-backed truce which went into effect in April and significantly reduced the intensity of fighting in a conflict the UN says has triggered the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

In the statement, Saudi Arabia stressed that the truce “aims primarily to reach a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire in Yemen and start the political process between the Yemeni government and the Houthis.”

It also called on the Iran-backed Houthis to “alleviate human suffering” and add revenue to the Central Bank of Yemen to pay salaries to the civilians.

Yemen truce 'likely to be extended' after warring sides announce 'commitment'

Houthis say they will open a marginal road around Taez, despite pressure to open main road

The truce in Yemen that ends on August 2 is likely to be extended, the country's former deputy foreign minister Mustapha Al Noman said, following a statement by the UN that the warring sides had agreed to “consolidate their commitment” to the armistice during Eid Al Adha.

"I believe the truce is likely to be renewed, possibly for a longer time, to give both sides time to negotiate without the pressure of time running out every two months,” Mr Noman told The National.

The Houthis also said on Wednesday they would open a 12 kilometre road known as the 50-60 road to Taez in one direction. The group set “conditions” for opening main roads, as part of the truce, including the “complete withdrawal” of coalition forces from the city.

Yemen’s government has yet to respond to the announcement, but has rejected similar initiatives by the Houthi militia in the past on the basis that the roads proposed are not of strategic importance and would not alleviate the suffering of civilians in Taez.

However, Mr Noman said that any road opening should be welcomed as civilian welfare would benefit from even the slightest improvement in mobility.

“The 50-60 road is not the ideal but shortens the distance of travel from 7 hours to 1 hour,” he said.

There are security concerns with the two other roads that the Houthis have proposed to reopen, said Mr Noman, who has also served as Yemen's ambassador to Bahrain, Canada, India and Spain. He had just returned from Riyadh where he met Yemeni government officials.

“The government fears that these alternative roads will allow the Houthis to push their reinforcements further west towards Taez. I suggested that the government should also reinforce its military there, if they feared that the Houthis would do that too,” he said.

Mr Noman also spoke to the Houthis, who said that their concerns lie with the coalition using the main roads from Taez to expand further northwards.

“I told them that if that’s their worry, they should open the road one way from the north, in territories under their control, to Taez. That way, at least 50 per cent of the people’s fatigue would be alleviated.

“This is when they came up with the 60-50 road. It’s a paved road that goes into Taez from the north but indirectly, through the south-east and into the city from the west.”

SPC: Aggression coalition's failure to honour truce does not encourage its renewal

The Supreme Political Council (SPC) on Wednesday affirmed that the aggression coalition's failure to implement all the terms of the armistice is a negative sign that does not encourage the discussion of it renewal.
In a meeting headed by the Council's President Mahdi Al-Mashat, the Council pointed out that the correct basis for any peace process in the future is to stop the aggression and lift the siege on Yemen, starting with the complete and immediate opening of Sana'a International Airport and the port of Hodeida, and the payment of employee salaries from oil and gas revenues.
It stressed that the implementation of these steps is one of the main important and basic issues to alleviate the suffering of citizens as a result of the aggression and the siege.

Yemen Houthi Rebels Set New Condition for Lifting Siege of Taiz

Yemen Shiite Houthi rebels have set a new condition for partially lifting the siege of the city of Taiz as a part of the truce which went into effect April 2.

In a statement, the Houthi ruling political council said they would not open the main road which links Taiz city with Sana’a and other governorates unless the “militia leave the city,” referring to the government forces which have been battling them since 2015.

“Opening up the Hoban road requires clearing the city of Taiz from armed militias,” the rebel said in their statement.

The government committee assigned to negotiate with the Houthis on road openings under the UN envoy’s supervision said in a statement that the UN envoy presented them a new proposal for road openings. Previously, the Houthis rejected a previous proposal that the government had accepted.

The committee didn’t elaborate on the substance of the new proposal. The previous one called for opening a main road and two other branch ones.

Statement by UN Special Envoy Hands Grundberg on the Parties' Commitment to Consolidating the Truce on the Occasion of Eid Al-Adha

In view of the upcoming Eid celebrations, the parties’ focal points in the military coordination committee agreed to consolidate their commitment to the current truce through a continued halt of all offensive ground, aerial, and maritime military operations, inside and outside of Yemen, and freezing current military positions on the ground.

The parties agreed to work in the military coordination committee and the joint coordination room towards further strengthening their efforts to build trust and contribute to a more conducive environment for dialogue, as well as improving the situation for Yemeni civilians.

As part of these efforts, the parties have agreed to moderate rhetoric in public statements and media and show care for the safety, wellbeing and protection of civilian children, women and men as well as critical infrastructure that supports their lives and livelihoods.

The parties agreed to continue discussions focused on preventing or reducing as much as possible movements of military personnel and equipment and means of exercising effective operational control to ensure that all forces understand and comply with their responsibilities in the truce.

My office stands ready to support the parties in this regard, including by providing technical assistance, capacity building, and facilitating decision-making.

New UN Proposal Rules Out Reopening Any Main Routes in Yemen’s Taiz

United Nations envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg made a new proposal to reopen routes to Taiz and other Yemeni regions.

Unexpectedly, however, he ruled out reopening any main roads that connect Taiz to other cities, taking into consideration all the proposals submitted by the Iran-backed Houthi militias.

Trusted sources said the envoy surprised the legitimate government with his proposal, which he handed in on Sunday.

Grundberg’s previous proposals on Taiz had called for reopening the main routes.

The envoy had met with a Houthi delegation in the Jordanian capital Amman over the past two days.

The Yemeni government was not invited to attend.

Al-Ezzi reveals meetings with ambassadors of European countries on Yemeni truce

Deputy Foreign Minister in Sanaa government, Hussein Al-Ezzi, on Tuesday revealed meetings with several ambassadors of the European Union countries on the truce and the peace efforts in Yemen.

Al-Ezzi explained in a tweet on the Twitter platform that he discussed with the ambassadors of the European Union, Germany, and France and the UN envoy most of the difficulties facing the path of peace.

IS YEMEN INTERNATIONAL FORUM IN SWEDEN A REAL ATTEMPT TO STOP THE WAR OR A BID TO GAIN TIME?

The forum, organized by the Sana'a Center for Strategic Studies (independent / based in Sana'a), in cooperation with the Folke Bernadotte Academy for peace, security, and development of Sweden (governmental), discussed files that included economic and security challenges, the integration of future fighters and the southern issue.

At the forum, Swedish Foreign Minister Anne Linde and UN envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg urged the participants to take advantage of the current truce to overcome obstacles and allow the peace-making process in Yemen to move forward.

Some believe that the forum is a media festival, which has no real value, as a group of media professionals, journalists, and activists were invited by the organizers in order to give the forum a consultative character.

Despite the importance of such meetings, they did not present any new additions related to the Yemeni issue and do not address the roots of the crisis, due to the absence of direct representatives of the components that imposed their control by force of arms, such as the Transitional Council and the Houthis, according to observers of the Yemeni crisis.

In this context, the journalist participating in the forum, Murad al-Arifi, said: “The Sana'a Center has been working on this project for a long time, it mainly targets peace initiatives and brings the Yemeni parties to the dialogue table again."

He added to Al-Estiklal, that "the forum targeted the leaders of the political parties, activists, and diplomats to formulate recommendations aimed at making peace one of the main pillars towards which the parties to the conflict are heading."

Al-Arifi explained that "the forum also dealt with the post-conflict phase, especially the economic and financial file, and how these recommendations can contribute to formulating programs that may alleviate the economic crisis, which was caused primarily by the financial and banking division between Sanaa and Aden."

Yet, the recommendations that came out of most of the consultations during the last period did not have any response or impact on the ground, and most of them remained trapped among the attendees, who do not have any actual decision to implement the outcomes of the meetings and consultations in light of the dependence on the outside.

On the sidelines of the forum, side meetings were held that included experts and leaders in the financial and banking sector, and focused on the issues facing Yemeni banks and the private sector, and their negative repercussions on Yemenis, without the presence of representatives of the Houthis concerned in this matter.

However, observers believe that all the activities that deal with the issue of peace in Yemen and are devoted to promoting dialogue between Yemenis include many parties, not including the Houthis, the party that triggered the war.

Yemeni writer Mustafa Naji described the event on June 21, as a revealing mirror of the approach of local actors, in reference to the Houthis and the Southern Transitional Council evading participation in the forum.

He said, in a tweet that "there is a congruence in the position between the Houthi and the transitional regarding the effectiveness of evading the confrontation of parties in society and engaging in discussions of genuine topics other than war and external interference."

In this forum, Naji added, "The United Nations evaded humanitarian entitlements, and the transitional and Houthi forces evaded confronting society and evaded service and legal entitlements."

Intel. bids to persuade Houthis honor pledges

The international community is moving in three directions to persuade the Houthis to implement their pledges regarding opening roads to the city of Taiz, considering that this would determine the course of a comprehensive settlement in Yemen, as well as an implicit declaration of the extension of the armistice and the transition to political and economic files.
Informed sources told Al-Bayan that the meetings of the joint military committee in Jordan, and the success of the proposals to form an operations room and activate the monitoring mechanism of the ceasefire agreement, leading to the appointment of monitors on the ground, depended on the file of the Houthis opening the way to Taiz and ending its siege, stressing that there are International understanding of the Yemeni government’s demands in this regard.
According to the sources, local mediators affiliated with the Houthis clearly stressed the need to open the road to Taiz, noting that the situation represents additional support for the government’s positions, and another confirmation that the Houthis fabricated flimsy and unrealistic justifications. The same sources indicated that this round of talks will be pivotal in determining the fate of the truce that expires in early August, and its repercussions on the peace track.

Gov't delegation in Jordan for Yemeni military meetings

The Yemeni government delegation on Sunday arrived in the Jordanian capital for discussions with Houthi counterparts, as part of joint military committee's meetings, to make the UN-mediated ceasefire hold.
The Amman-hosted meeting is expected to put an end to Houthi military hostile acts that jeopardize the truce, head of the government delegation said in a statement.
The military committee's discussions will focus on how to maintain the truce, particularly from military viewpoint, Gen. Sameer al-Sabri added, after the Houthis committed "several breaches, firing shells, drones and missiles at residential quarters and cities, and mobilizing in fronts."

Daniel R. DePetris: A truce has slowed the bloodshed in Yemen. Will the calm hold?

Despite the last several months of progress, the road to a lasting peace is still a way off. There is zero trust between the combatants, with the Houthis viewing the Saudi-backed Yemeni authorities as foreign puppets and the Saudis continuing to label the Houthis as Iranian proxies. Holding dominance in the north and ruling over roughly 70% of the Yemeni population, the Houthis remain stubbornly resistant to any sign of political compromise and are refusing to discuss an end to their siege of Taiz, notwithstanding a prior agreement to do just that. If the truce isn’t extended for a second time on Aug. 2, the war could very well resume where it left off.

Meanwhile, Yemen’s humanitarian catastrophe continues unabated.

We must be realistic: The odds of the war ending are still quite small. Sensing that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is desperate to pull out of a quagmire of his own making, the Houthis may calculate they can use the truce to rebuild and bide their time. The fighting will cease only when the combatants have the political will to do so.

But the last several months are at least a few hopeful chapters in an otherwise depressing story.

More importantly, U.S. officials can learn a critical lesson — enabling somebody else’s war of choice can be as shortsighted as fighting your own – by Daniel R. DePetris, a fellow at Defense Priorities

A daring flight to safety — and a story Biden should tell MBS

The saga of a Saudi American teenager named Rakan Aldosseri is a small untold chapter in the catalogue of human rights abuses in Saudi Arabia. But it explains in simple terms why President Biden should demand greater accountability when he meets this month with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The Aldosseri story has some unlikely details — including the boy’s unsuccessful personal video plea to President Biden last year, followed by his dangerous flight to safety across the barren desert of the Empty Quarter in eastern Saudi Arabia. At bottom, it’s simply one more example of the dangers facing Saudi citizens who offend the kingdom’s leader.

Aldosseri’s problems began after he joined his father, Nader, in suing the kingdom in 2020 to assert their hereditary claims in a dispute over a 1995 refinery deal in St. Lucia. It was a humdrum legal matter, except that one of defendants named in the commercial action was MBS, as the crown prince is known.

The kingdom sought to dismiss MBS from the suit on the grounds that he enjoyed sovereign immunity — a tricky question for a person who isn’t formally head of state and one that U.S. courts have never resolved. And then bad things began to happen.

Biden’s advisor celebrates Saudi Arabia’s change in dealing with Jews

The US Special Envoy to Combat Anti-Semitism, Deborah Lipstadt, has said that Saudi Arabia has changed a lot with regard to its view and treatment of Jews.

In a media statement, she said, “The kingdom has become a place that changes dramatically in relation to the Jews,” as she put it.

“They removed anti-Semitic contents from textbooks in large quantities, hosted Jewish groups, and sent imams abroad,” she added, referring to the removal of verses from the Holy Qur’an that speak of Jews from school curricula.

“Senior government officials in Saudi Arabia wanted to see me, and journalists and other elements showed that there was a real change in this,” said Lipstadt, a senior adviser to US President Joe Biden.

Saudi forces arrest activists, critics in Shia-populated Eastern Province: Report

Saudi forces have reportedly arrested a number of people in Saudi Arabia’s oil-rich and Shia-populated Eastern Province, as the kingdom intensifies a heavy-handed crackdown against critics of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and his policies.

Opposition sources said Saudi forces have lately launched a frantic campaign in Qatif, al-Ahsa, and Dammam regions, detaining local residents without a warrant and prior notice, Lebanon’s al-Ahed news website reported on Monday.

The sources, who asked not to be named, added that Saudi forces have arrested Sareh al-Ali, a resident of Dammam, in al-Ahsa, after having detained religious scholar Sheikh Abdul Majeed bin Haji al-Ahmad, two young Shia men identified as Hussein Rajab and Hussein al-Mutawa, and social media activist Musa Ali al-Khunaizi.

Auf Friedensmission? Bidens geplanter Nahost-Besuch polarisiert

Yemen's Blood Exposes Washington, Tricks Exploiting International Law

The American position on the Yemeni war is among the American approaches at the world level. The Arab Gulf states, which are located on a lake of oil, are considered a piggy bank for the US and a profitable market for marketing weapons, military equipment and products of American companies.

Since the founding of the US over 300 years ago and until today, this administration has not committed even the slightest amount of credibility in its international dealings and relations. It is a country that appeals to a great legacy of utilitarian demagogy as a colonial method adopted by the United States in its foreign policies.

In general, the American position on the war in Yemen is one that is biased and supportive of the coalition countries, as Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Gulf countries do not have their own independent decision, as they are governed by directives they receive from The decision to war on Yemen is not an ordinary decision. This decision was taken in Washington, and the order for the implementation was given to the Gulf states, led by Saudi Arabia.

The US robbed many large countries of their national decision about the future. The examples are clear and they do not need a window of insight because Germany and Japan, despite their strong economy, their decision depends on the United States of America.

American military bases are still in place since World War II in territories of Germany and Japan. What does that mean? It is an undeclared occupation. The situation is the same in the rest of the European countries, such as France, the Netherlands, and even Britain. All of them do not have their own independent national decision, far from American directives and interventions.

And now, what the Russian-Ukrainian war shows the demise of the American era, the end of unipolar hegemony, and the emergence of a strong pole based on China and Russia, which will serve as a lifeline for the rest of the world from American hegemony.

In Mideast, Biden struggling to shift policy after Trump

Joe Biden took office looking to reshape U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, putting a premium on promoting democracy and human rights. In reality, he has struggled on several fronts to meaningfully separate his approach from former President Donald Trump’s.

Biden’s visit to the region this week includes a meeting with Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the oil-rich kingdom’s de facto leader who U.S. intelligence officials determined approved the 2018 killing of U.S.-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey.

Biden’s prospects for progress on returning the U.S. to the Iran nuclear deal, brokered by Obama in 2015 and withdrawn from by Trump in 2018, remain elusive. The administration has participated indirectly in Vienna talks aimed at bringing both Washington and Tehran back into compliance with the deal. But the talks have thus far proved fruitless.

As a candidate, Biden promised the Saudis would “pay the price” for their human rights record. The sharp rhetoric helped Biden contrast himself with Trump, whose first official foreign trip as president was to the kingdom and who praised the Saudis as a “great ally” even after the Khashoggi killing.

Biden’s tough warning to the Saudis came at a moment when oil was trading at about $41 barrel; now, prices are closer to $105. The elevated oil prices are hurting Americans at the gas pump and driving up prices on essential goods, while helping the Saudis’ bottom line.

White House officials have said energy talks would make up one component of the Saudi leg of the president’s visit, but they have played down the prospect of the Saudis agreeing to further increase oil production because the kingdom says it is nearly at production capacity.

But Bruce Riedel, who served as a senior adviser on the National Security Council for four presidents, said the Saudi Arabia visit is “completely unnecessary” under the circumstances.

“There’s nothing that Joe Biden is going to do in Jeddah that the secretary of state or the secretary of defense, or frankly, a really good ambassador couldn’t do on his own.,” Riedel said. “There’s no outcome that’s going to come from this that really warrants a presidential visit.”

Biden to discuss Yemen ceasefire during Saudi Arabia visit

White House confirms US president will meet King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman

President Joe Biden is expected to discuss an extension of the months-long ceasefire in Yemen during talks with Saudi Arabia's King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during his trip to the kingdom, the White House said.

The four-month truce has been the "direct result" of Washington's co-operation with leaders in the region, said John Kirby, spokesman for the National Security Council.

"It's the longest peace there in seven years and obviously we want to see that continue," Mr Kirby said on Thursday.

"And we've worked directly with the Saudi government to help get that ceasefire in place and get it extended.

"And we're certainly grateful for the Saudis' leadership in that regard."

The remarks come before Mr Biden's trip to the Middle East next week where the White House confirmed he would be meeting King Salman and Prince Mohammed in Jeddah.

"The president will sit down in a bilateral meeting with the Saudi king and his leadership team," Mr Kirby said.

"As you know, the crown prince is on that leadership team. So he will be a part of that meeting."

Assessing Civilian Casualties Linked to U.S.-Made Weapons in Yemen

The United States failed to properly assess civilian casualties linked to American-made weapons used by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, a recent report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) finds, as President Joe Biden is set to visit the Middle East and meet with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The visit is reportedly part of a broader reorientation in the U.S.-Saudi relationship: a senior U.S. official said that “both sides have decided that for the sake of achieving peace and stability in the Middle East, we need to move past” U.S. concerns about the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. But the United States cannot move past the civilian casualties inflicted by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, which continues to receive U.S. military assistance, without a thorough investigation and accountability. Nor can U.S. officials continue to claim that human rights are a consideration in weapons sales if civilian casualties linked to American-made weapons are not investigated and considered as part of future sale decisions.

Earlier in June, the New York Times reported that the GAO had completed, but not publicly released, its report on civilian casualties from American-made weapons in Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen. Released internally at the end of April, some officials “worried that the State Department could hide important findings from the public” through the clearance process.

It is deeply troubling that these agencies do not appear to have the appropriate processes in place to investigate reports that U.S. weapons have been used for unauthorized purposes in violation of arms sales agreements or the laws of war. The GAO report raises questions about how the State Department’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, which must sign off on Foreign Military Sales, has incorporated considerations of civilian harm into arms sales decisions. These questions are even more pressing in the face of Biden’s upcoming visit to the region, and highlight the clash between the administration’s commitment to human rights and its strategic objectives.

Without proper procedures in place to investigate and report civilian casualties linked to American-made weapons, the Biden administration’s commitment to put human rights at the center of U.S. foreign policy will ring hollow.

Biden trip promotes budding Arab-Israeli security ties

Once-unthinkable coordination between Israeli and Arab militaries is in the spotlight as Joe Biden makes his first Middle East trip as president, heightening debates over whether the U.S.-backed initiative between former enemies strengthens defenses against Iran or makes a regional war more likely.

Promoting greater regional integration with Israel’s modern military could soothe Saudi and Emirati complaints the U.S. is not doing enough to protect them from Iran. It potentially accustoms Arab nations to working with Israel, despite Israel’s failure to reach the kind of political resolution with the Palestinians that Arab nations long demanded as a condition for recognizing Israel.

The U.S. also hopes the coordination will mean that regional actors will take more responsibility for their own security, allowing the U.S. to ease its decades-long safeguarding of Arab oilfields and turn more attention to Russia and China.

And in the short term of U.S. elections, the effort helps the White House emphasize the security aspect of a potentially humbling presidential trip that’s intended partly to appeal to Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries for more oil, with no guarantee of success.

Opponents accuse Israel of exaggerating the Iranian threat.

Democrats propose blocks on Biden security pacts with Saudi Arabia, UAE

Lawmakers want a say in any military alliance that may further entrench the US in the region.

Reps Ro Khanna (D-Cal.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) took aim yesterday at efforts to expand Washington’s security coordination with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The pair introduced several amendments to next year’s defense spending authorization bill that would block or slow any new defense agreements with the controversial monarchies by forcing a congressional vote — and a potentially heated public debate — before any pact could enter into force.

The proposals appear to be a response to rumors that President Joe Biden will offer security guarantees to Washington’s Middle East partners during his trip to the region next week.

“While Biden seems poised to renege on his promise to get tough with Saudi Arabia, members of Congress don’t appear to be on board with a shift from pressuring Riyadh to sending US servicemen and women to defend the Saudi dictatorship,” said Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.

The timing of the proposals is key, according to Eric Eikenberry, the government relations director of Win Without War. “You’re likely to have floor action simultaneous with the President’s visit to these countries,” Eikenberry said. “This very much feels like Khanna and Omar throwing down themselves and saying, ‘We are also trying to influence this debate. Congress will also be taking significant votes alongside your visit.'”

“It’s about signaling to the president that a large swath of his party is very opposed to the kind of military support and engagement they want to have with some of these governments,” he added.

Back From Europe, Biden Turns To Diplomatically Delicate Saudi Arabia Trip

U.S. President Joe Biden turns his attention this month to a sensitive trip to the Middle East that will test his ability to reset relations with Saudi Arabia's powerful crown prince after Biden denounced him as a pariah.

So far, Biden has been pointedly unclear on whether he will have face-to-face talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi de facto leader who the U.S. intelligence community concluded was behind the 2018 murder of Washington Post journalist and political opponent Jamal Khashoggi.

While Biden is expected to meet Saudi King Salman and the crown prince while there, Biden says his visit to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is about participating in a summit of Gulf nations, not about meeting the crown prince.

"It's in Saudi Arabia, but it's not about Saudi Arabia," Biden said. "And so there's no commitment that is being made or -- I'm not even sure; I guess I will see the king and the crown prince, but that's -- that's not the meeting I'm going to. They'll be part of a much larger meeting," he told reporters at the NATO summit in Madrid last Thursday.

Biden's dancing around on the issue has led to some consternation among Saudi officials who back the crown prince and see the president's comments as insulting, said a source familiar with the dynamics.

"Every time he says 'I'm not meeting with him' it causes problems," the source said. "You can't ask them for a favor and keep denying you're even meeting with them."

But facing a host of other problems related to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Biden was persuaded by aides to embark on an improvement in relations.

He needs oil-rich Saudi Arabia's help at a time of high gasoline prices and as he encourages efforts to end the war in Yemen after the Saudis recently extended a ceasefire there. There are also the U.S. priorities of curbing Iran's influence in the Middle East and China's global influence.

Iran: Increased US presence only foments insecurity in West Asia region, spreads terrorism

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman says increased presence of the United States in the West Asia region will only foment insecurity in the region and help further spread terrorist activities.

“Any measure to pave the way for the increased presence and role of the United States in regional security mechanism will have no other outcome but insecurity, instability, and spread of terrorism across the region,” the Iranian spokesman said.

He added that the plan to establish a so-called joint air defense system was provocative and “the Islamic Republic of Iran considers it a threat to its own national security as well as the regional security.”

"The US comes up with such ideas without having a correct understanding of the region’s realities, and only with the purpose of fueling Iranophobia and creating division among the regional countries," said the official.

Iran enriches to 20% with new centrifuges at fortified site

Iran announced Sunday that it has begun enriching uranium up to 20% using sophisticated centrifuges at its underground Fordo nuclear plant, state TV reported, an escalation that comes amid a standoff with the West over its tattered atomic deal.

That Tehran is enriching uranium up to 20% purity — a technical step from weapons-grade levels of 90% — with a new set of its most advanced centrifuges at a facility deep inside a mountain deals yet another blow to the already slim chances of reviving the accord.

IRGC detains foreigners spying in Iran's deserts

The Intelligence Organization of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has detained several foreigners, including Britain's second most senior envoy in Tehran, for acts of spying such as taking earth samples in restricted areas, Iranian news agencies say.

A video shot by Iranian drones and released by the IRGC's intelligence arm on Wednesday clearly shows the suspects visiting restricted areas with 'no entry' signs, IRNA news agency reported.

"One of those identified is the British deputy ambassador who has gone to Shahdad desert in Kerman with his family as a tourist, but as the recorded images show, he is taking soil samples when a missile exercise is being conducted by the IRGC Aerospace Force at the time."

The video showed Giles Whitaker, deputy head of mission at the British Embassy in Tehran, and his family. "Whitaker was expelled from the city to which he had traveled after apologizing," the report said.

According to Fars news agency, Whitaker was an army officer before a long career with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

One of those detained was identified as the husband of Austria's cultural attaché in Iran. He had traveled to a village in central Damghan in Semnan province and sampled the area's soil. He had already been caught filming a military district in Tehran, the report said.

The clip also showed a picture of a third foreigner, identified as Maciej Walczak, a university professor in Poland, who was visiting Iran as a tourist.

"He enters the country under the guise of a scientific exchange with a university, but as tourists, they go to Kerman and Shahdad region at the time of a missile test, where they take samples of soil, water, rock, salt and mud. He is the head of the biological and biotechnology department of the Copernicus University in Poland, which is associated with the Zionist regime," IRNA reported.

In May, Iran’s intelligence ministry said it had arrested two European nationals who plotted to foment chaos, social disorder, and insecurity across the country.

Britain Says Iranian Media Reports On Arrest Of British Diplomat 'Completely False

Britain's Foreign Office said on July 6 that reports of the arrest of a British diplomat in Iran "are completely false."

Iranian media reported earlier that the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) detained several foreign nationals, including Britain's second-ranking diplomat, over accusations of spying.

The IRGC identified and arrested the foreigners, saying they were observed by drones taking soil samples in a prohibited area in the central desert of Iran, the IRGC-affiliated Fars news agency said.

The country's state-run IRNA news agency reported that the foreigners had been arrested but did not say when or whether they were currently in custody.

Britain's deputy ambassador is among the people who went to the Shahdad desert with his family as a tourist, Fars reported.

A photo accompanying the Fars report showed four people in a desert setting. Another photo showed two people who appear to be looking for soil samples after parking their bicycles.

"These spies were taking earth samples in Iran's central desert where the Revolutionary Guards' aerospace missile exercises were conducted," state TV said.

Fars claimed the British diplomat, Giles Whitaker, was expelled from the country after apologizing.

A spokesperson for Britain's Foreign Office said: "Reports of the arrest of a British diplomat in Iran are completely false."

Iran rejects US claim, says no 'new demand' beyond JCPOA made in Doha

Iran's foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has rejected claims made by US officials about new demands raised by the Iranian delegation in Doha talks, saying the Islamic Republic’s requests are in line with the 2015 accord.

Addressing a joint press conference with his Qatari counterpart Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Tehran on Wednesday, the top Iranian diplomat reiterated that his country is seeking a “good, strong and lasting agreement.”

“Contrary to media claims of the American side, we have put forward no excessive demand that goes beyond the framework of the JCPOA (the joint comprehensive plan of action)," Amir-Abdollahian said, adding that the demands are totally in line with the 2015 deal.

Iran Adds Demands in Nuclear Talks, Enrichment 'Alarming,' US Envoy Says

Iran added demands unrelated to discussions on its nuclear program during the latest talks and has made alarming progress on enriching uranium, the U.S. envoy for talks on reinstating a nuclear deal said Tuesday.

U.S. Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley said that there was a proposal on the table for a timeline by which Iran could come back into compliance with the nuclear deal and Washington could ease sanctions on Tehran.

Indirect talks between Tehran and Washington aimed at breaking an impasse over how to salvage Iran's 2015 nuclear pact ended in Doha, Qatar, last week without the hoped-for progress.

Malley said Iranian negotiators added new demands.

"They have, including in Doha, added demands that I think anyone looking at this would be viewed as having nothing to do with the nuclear deal, things that they've wanted in the past," he said in an interview with National Public Radio.

The demands included some that the United States and Europeans have said could not be part of negotiations.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on Twitter after speaking with the EU's top diplomat Josep Borrell, "Agreement is possible only based on mutual understanding & interests. We remain ready to negotiate a strong & durable agreement. US must decide if it wants a deal or insists on sticking to its unilateral demands."

My comment: Somewhat funny. From the very beginning, the US itself openly had said that it would do exactly this: “add demands unrelated to discussions on its [Iran’s] nuclear program”

US Navy offers cash for tips to seize Mideast drugs, weapons

The U.S. Navy's Mideast-based 5th Fleet is starting to offer rewards for information that could help sailors intercept weapons, drugs and other illicit shipments across the region amid tensions over Iran's nuclear program and Tehran's arming of Yemen's Houthi rebels. While avoiding directly mentioning Iran, the 5th Fleet's decision to offer cash and other goods for actionable intelligence in the Persian Gulf and other strategic waterways may increase pressure on the flow of weapons to the Houthis as a shaky cease-fire still holds in Yemen. Already, the Houthis have threatened a new allied task force organized by the 5th Fleet in the Red Sea, though there's been no attack by the Iranian-backed forces on the Navy in the time since.

Ceasefire in Yemen: Germany is supporting the UN’s efforts to bring about peace

The start of serious negotiations to resolve the conflict in Yemen is within reach. Together with the United Nations, Germany hosted a donor conference on 4 July to strengthen the important mediation work of UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg.

The Yemen Peace Support Facility (PSF) was established three years ago on Germany’s initiative. It is administered by the United Nations and is at the disposal of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen. Ten countries contribute financial resources to the fund, including Sweden, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK, as well as the EU. Germany is the largest donor to the Facility.

Minister of State Tobias Lindner pledged further financial support for the PSF.

In Berlin, the further strategic development of the Peace Support Facility was agreed upon, as were concrete, operational steps. The PSF is intended to help prevent an environmental disaster in the Red Sea, for example.

Military component is committed to withdraw from politics: Sudan’s FM says

Acting Foreign Minister Ali Sadiq on Wednesday confirmed the withdrawal of the military component from the political process and non-interference in the activities would-be-formed civilian government.

The former ruling coalition Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) questioned the credibility of pledges made by the head of the Sovereign Council, on June 4, about the withdrawal of the military component from the intra-Sudanese dialogue facilitated by the tripartite mechanism, and their neutrality towards the government that would be formed through this process.

Following his return from the IGAD summit with General al-Burhan, Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq briefed foreign diplomats in Khartoum about the recent measures announced by the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council.

Al-Sadiq stressed that al-Burhan clearly indicated the army’s decision to withdraw from the political process facilitated by the Trilateral Mechanism of the UNITAMS, the African Union and the IGAD.

Sudan to dissolve Sovereign Council after new government

Sudan's army chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan said Monday that the ruling Sovereign Council will be dissolved after the formation of a new government, Anadolu News Agency reports.

Al-Burhan said in a televised speech that the army will withdraw from the ongoing political talks and allow political and revolutionary groups to sit together to agree on the formation of a civilian government.

"The Sovereign Council will be dissolved once political parties agree on forming a civilian government," he said, adding that a higher council of the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) will be established after the dissolution of the Sovereign Council.

Sudan's Burhan sacks civilian members from ruling body as protesters rally again

Sudan's coup leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Wednesday dismissed the last civilian members of his ruling body as part of a power shift he has proposed, but protesters who have rejected his pledge again took to the streets.

"The blood of the martyrs did not flow in vain," hundreds of women protesters chanted in Khartoum about pro-democracy activists who have been killed in street violence, also demanding a return of "the soldiers to the barracks".

Burhan -- who grabbed power in a coup last October that drew international condemnation -- in a surprise move Monday vowed to "make room" for civilian groups to form a new transitional government.

He also said that the ruling Sovereign Council he chairs would be disbanded and, in an apparent move to carry out the process, issued a decree relieving five little-known civilian members of their posts.

Sudan civilians reject army offer as 'ruse', urge more protests

Sudan's main civilian bloc, the Forces for Freedom and Change, on Tuesday rejected a proposal by the country's coup leader to make way for civilian rule as a "transparent manoeuvre" and urged more protests.

Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, whose power grab last October ousted the FFC, had vowed in a surprise move Monday to "make room" for civilian groups to form a new transition government.

But the FFC on Tuesday called for "continued public pressure" on the streets after days of protests and dismissed Burhan's move as a "tactical retreat and a transparent manoeuvre".

"The coup leader's speech is a giant ruse, even worse than the October 25 coup," said FFC leader Taha Othman. "The crisis will end with the coup leaders resigning and the forces of the revolution forming a civil government."

On the streets of Khartoum, protesters again defied security forces and held firm on their makeshift barricades.

Top general says military to leave Sudan political talks

Sudan’s leading general said Monday the country’s military will withdraw from negotiations meant to solve the ongoing political crisis after a coup last year, allowing civil society representatives to take their place.

In televised statements aired on Sudan’s state television, Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan also promised that he will dissolve the sovereign council that he leads after a new transitional government is formed. The council has governed the country since the military took power in a coup last year.

Since the coup, the U.N. political mission in Sudan, the African Union and the eight-nation east African regional Intergovernmental Authority in Development group have been trying to broker a way out of the political impasse. But talks have yielded no results so far. Pro-democracy groups have repeatedly said they will not negotiate with the military, and have called for them to immediately hand the reins to a civilian government.

UK warship seizes advanced Iranian missiles bound for Yemen

A British Royal Navy vessel seized a sophisticated shipment of Iranian missiles in the Gulf of Oman earlier this year, officials said Thursday, pointing to the interdiction as proof of Tehran’s support for Yemen’s Houthi rebels in the embattled country.

The British government statement was striking in that it provided some of the strongest findings to date that Tehran is arming the Houthis against the Saudi-led military coalition with advanced weapons smuggled through the Persian Gulf.

The U.K. Embassy in the United Arab Emirates described the seizure of surface-to-air-missiles and engines for land attack cruise missiles as “the first time a British naval warship has interdicted a vessel carrying such sophisticated weapons from Iran.”

“The U.K. will continue to work in support of an enduring peace in Yemen and is committed to international maritime security so that commercial shipping can transit safely without threat of disruption,” said James Heappey, Minister for the Armed Forces.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations rejected the U.K.’s findings as “groundless,” saying that Iran has “never transported weapons or military equipment to Yemen” in violation of the U.N. arms embargo and “always upheld its international obligations.”

The British government’s announcement signals an escalation as Western officials have in the past shied away from public statements that definitively blame Iran for arming Yemen’s Houthis with military contraband. The route of the smuggled shipments through the Arabian Sea or Gulf of Aden, however, has strongly suggested their destination.

UK in no position to make anti-Iran claims about Yemen

The spokesman of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the baseless claim made by United Kingdom about the seizure of the Iranian weapons consignment en rout to Yemen.

Nasser Kanani, the spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted to the claim published on the official website of the British government about the seizure of the shipment of Iranian weapons destined for Yemen in January 2022.

In response to the baseless and repetitive claim, Kanani said that "By continuously selling advanced weapons to the self-proclaimed military coalition against the defenseless people of Yemen, Britain is an accomplice in the war and aggression against Yemen and is in no position to make such baseless accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran."

"Based only on the news and statistics published in the British media, this country has sold about advanced weapons, including bombs, air-to-ground and guided missiles, and fighter jets, worth 8 billion pounds to the anti-Yemen coalition since the beginning of the military invasion of Yemen," the Iranian spokesman added.

He added, "This figure (8 billion pounds) could be much higher if one takes into account the special licenses that the British government has provided to the arms manufacturers. In fact, the United Kingdom has provided these weapons to the aggressors with the exact knowledge of the war crimes committed by the aggressor coalition against the Yemeni defenseless people and those arms' use against schools, hospitals, wedding parties and food warehouses."

"Undoubtedly, the UK government's approach in continuing to export weapons to the coalition forces has been one of the reasons for the continuation of the inhuman war in Yemen, therefore this country is in no position to make such a claim against the Islamic Republic of Iran."

As Part of Its Economic War, US-Saudi Aggression Raises Costs of Importing Goods to Yemen

The [Sanaa gov.] Ministry of Finance for Statistics and Planning affirmed that the high rate of dependence on foriegn goods is one of the reasons for the high rate of inflation in Yemen.

During his speech to Al-Masirah, Friday, The Undersecretary of the ministry, Ahmed Hajar, said that "Yemen's hard currency revenues were controlled by the pro-aggression government, and this also boosted inflation," stressing that the US-Saudi aggression deliberately raised the costs of importing goods to Yemen, which led to an increase in their price in the market.

He explained that most local products need materials imported from abroad, the most important of which are oil derivatives, which led to an increase in the prices of the local product as well.

He added, "The government must support the local production process, in addition to ensuring the stability of the market for businessmen, and rationalizing consumption by citizens."

As part of its economic war, the US-Saudi aggression worked to drain about 97% of the Yemeni state’s resources, either by controlling them militarily such as oil and gas sources, freezing Yemeni foreign assets and transferring them to mercenaries and financing coalition operations, or imposing siege on the vital port of Hodeidah and the most important port after Aden, which is still in the grip of Sana’a and out of control of the aggression.

Yemen Joint Market Monitoring Initiative: June 2022 Situation Overview

The JMMI is a monthly survey of market systems. The basket of goods assessed includes 10 non-food items (NFIs), such as fuel, water, and hygiene products, reflecting the programmatic areas of the WASH Cluster. The JMMI tracks all components of the WASH and Food Survival Minimum Expenditure Basket (SMEB) as well as other food and non-food items.

Key findings

The median price of the food SMEB, with canned beans, and the total SMEB, remained relatively stable in the IRG compared to the previous month. They were measured at 115,770 YER and 189,839 YER respectively. In areas under nominal control of the DFA, prices of the food SMEB, with canned beans, and the total SMEB stood at 63,549 YER and 126,379 YER respectively.

The median cost of the WASH SMEB (20,667 YER) rose with 17% in the DFA, due to increase in the price of water trucking (3787 YER per cubic meter) and soap (257 YER per 100 gram). The median cost of the WASH SMEB stood at 29,948 in the IRG.

The value of the new Yemeni rial notes was found at 10 40 YER/USD, while the rate in the parallel market was found at 557 YER/USD.

Food and WASH vendors most commonly reported constraints were price inflation, high fuel prices, liquidity shortage and movement restriction (20%).

The number of fuel vendors reporting fuel shortages reduced from 54% to 31%. Nonetheless, lack of fuel supplies remained one of the major constraints reportedly faced by fuel vendors (51%).

Cash Consortium of Yemen (CCY) - Remittances Tracker (June 2022)

Key findings:

The ranking of the 3 origins of the remittances received, the first one is from other Parts of Yemen, the second is the Middle East( UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, etc), and third is North America (USA, Canada, etc).

The ranking of the 3 destinations for remittances, the first one is from other part of Yemen, the second is the Middle East (UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, etc), and third is North America (USA, Canada, etc).

The percentage of inflowing remittances has increased; this is potentially due to Eid Al-Adha holiday, as people outside of Yemen send more money to support back their families and friends for the holiday.

Joe Biden: Why I’m going to Saudi Arabia

A more secure and integrated Middle East benefits Americans in many ways. Its waterways are essential to global trade and the supply chains we rely on. Its energy resources are vital for mitigating the impact on global supplies of Russia’s war in Ukraine. And a region that’s coming together through diplomacy and cooperation — rather than coming apart through conflict — is less likely to give rise to violent extremism that threatens our homeland or new wars that could place new burdens on U.S. military forces and their families.

Biden defends decision to visit Saudi Arabia, saying rights are on his agenda

While he previously denounced the Gulf monarchy as a "pariah," the president needs its help at a time of high gasoline prices and as he encourages efforts to end the war in Yemen.

In a commentary published in the Washington Post late on Saturday, Biden said his aim was to reorient and not rupture relations with a country that has been a U.S. strategic partner for 80 years.

“I know that there are many who disagree with my decision to travel to Saudi Arabia. My views on human rights are clear and long-standing, and fundamental freedoms are always on the agenda when I travel abroad,” Biden wrote.

Biden needs oil-rich Saudi Arabia’s help at a time of high gasoline prices and as he encourages efforts to end the war in Yemen after the Saudis recently extended a ceasefire there. The United States also wants to curb Iran’s influence in the Middle East and China’s global sway.

Biden argued that Saudi Arabia had recently helped to restore unity among the six countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, had fully supported the truce in Yemen and was working to stabilize oil markets with other OPEC producers.

Biden said he will be the first president to fly from Israel to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, next week, which he said would be a small symbol of “budding relations and steps toward normalization” between Israel and the Arab world.

“I will be the first president to visit the Middle East since 9/11 without U.S. troops engaged in a combat mission there. It’s my aim to keep it that way.” Biden said.

Minaikher to Asharq Al-Awsat: Our Only Choice Is Supporting Political Solution in Yemen

Gulf Cooperation Council Ambassador to Yemen Sarhan al-Minaikher has been a witness to key developments in the war-torn country for years.

On the crisis in Yemen and the latest UN-sponsored truce, Minaikher said the GCC has only one choice and that is supporting the political solution to the crisis.

On the truce, he said the GCC fully supports it so that it can transform into a foundation for the political solution.

There can be no start to any political negotiations without a truce, he stressed.

“I believe the end of the crisis isn’t far out of reach. It may be very close should the Yemeni parties place their country’s higher interests above personal ones,” he added.

“Once they reach these convictions, then peace will be within reach,” he said.

“The Yemenis are aware of their history. Yemen is part of the Arabian Peninsula and an extension of the GCC. It cannot be separated from that. Yemen must coexist with its natural neighbors in the Arabian Peninsula as a free Arab country,” Minaikher urged.

Commenting on the truce, he said the Saudi-led Arab coalition and Oman had exerted great efforts that led to the declaration of the ceasefire. This allowed UN envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg to draft a political roadmap that culminated in former President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi announcing that he was transferring his power to the new Presidential Leadership Council.

Minaikher stressed that the GCC is always ready to host any meetings between Yemenis, meaning the committees and councils that are formed by the PLC. The Gulf countries also support any political consultations that are sponsored by the UN, he emphasized, recalling Kuwait’s hosting of 111-day consultations in 2016.

Yemen: Scale of landmine planting is stretching demining teams thin, says YEMAC

The Deputy Director of the Yemeni [Aden gov.] Executive Mine Action Centre (YEMAC) has warned that the scale and density of landmine planting is a fast-growing issue in Yemen, where demining teams are stretched thin and struggling to keep up with the workload.

Since Yemen’s civil was began in 2014, Houthi militias have planted land and seamines across the war-torn country. Whilst the Houthis’ use of landmines has been widely documented since at least 2015, the sheer number of landmines planted in recent months in high-risk areas – such as Marib – has led experts to warn that the armed group’s new tactics could hamper mine eradication in Yemen, as well as pose an increased threat to the safety, health and lives of Yemenis.

Muntather Al-Radfani, the Deputy Director of the Executive Center for Mine Action in Marib, has reiterated this warning, saying: “Masam teams and the National Demining Program are scattered in many areas, but laying mines by the Houthi militias took place with a very large density and in new areas that had not been planted befor

Yemeni rivals trade blames as 7 killed 3 injured in truce breaches

The Yemeni government troops and Houthi group on Sunday traded blames for breaking the UN-brokered truce, after seven soldiers were killed and three others were injured.
The Houthis breached the truce 185 times in the last 48 hours in Hodeida, Taiz, Dhalea, Hajjah, Sa'ada, Jawf and Marib, Saba said on Sunday.
The breaches ranged from firing army sites with Katyusha rockets, tank and artillery shells, different ammunitions and booby-trapped drones, to erecting new earthworks and emplacements, deploying machineguns and sending spy drones, the government-run news agency added.
The Houthi violations left three soldiers killed and three others injured by direct shoots in Marib, Hodeida and Taiz, Aden-based Saba said.
According to the Houthi-run Saba account, the group on Saturday buried four of its fighters who had been killed at fighting fronts.
The government troops committed 48 breaches against the truce in 48 hours, the Sana'a-based news agency added.
Among the breaches were sorties and airstrikes with warplanes, Apaches and spy drones, as well as erection of new fortifications, gunfire and artillery shelling at Houthi sites in several provinces, it said.
