Hadramout tribes approve recruitment of 10,000 fighters

The “Hadramout Tribes Alliance” on Saturday approved the opening of the recruitment door for 10,000 members from the valley and desert districts of Hadramout province to confront threats in all districts.

This move by the tribes alliance aims to block the way for the UAE-funded Southern Transitional Council (STC) militias to control the province.

A statement issued by the tribes alliance during a meeting held in the city of Sayoun confirmed the alliance’s support for the leadership of the “First Military Region” affiliated with the Islah Party, calling for the formation of a brigade to be under the command of the Military Region’s chief of staff,” Amer bin Hatian Al-Nahdi.

In their statement, the tribes demanded the recruitment of 3,000 members from the valley’s districts within the security services to maintain security and social peace in all districts, and rejected the recruitment or presence of any armed elements from outside Hadramout, whatever the pretexts for their presence.

STC threatens Al-Alimi Council with unprecedented scenario in Aden

The UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) on Friday threatened the Riyadh-formed Presidential Council, headed by Rashad Al-Alimi, and pro-coalition government with an unprecedented scenario in center of Yemen’s southern port city of Aden during the current stage.

Lotfi Shatara, member of the STC’s Presidium, said in a tweet on “Twitter”: “Aden will not be a transit capital for those who believe that the situation will continue for them to remain at the forefront of the scene,” in a threat to repeat protests of March 2021, and storm al-Ma’ashiq Palace.

Attacking the Al-Alimi Council, Shatara added: “Despite their utter failure since Hadi’s legitimacy until today and forever Aden will be the capital of the south.”

He addressed Al-ALIMI and the head of pro-coalition government, Maeen Abdulmalik regarding the deteriorating situation in Aden; “You have to work from it to provide the People their needs which are the first priority.”

He mocked al-Alimi and members of the government loyal to the coalition, “Whoever has no value in his province, will have no value in our capital,” referring to those leaders who are outcast even in their areas of Taiz.

UAE is moving to use “ISIS”: Pro-coalition official says

An official in the government loyal to Saudi-led coalition confirmed on Wednesday that the UAE has started moving the “ISIS” organization, in conjunction with Abu Dhabi’s arrangements for the so-called “fight against terrorism” after days of signing a formal agreement with pro-coalition ministry of defense.

Anis Mansour, an advisor at Yemeni embassy in Riyadh, said in a post on his social media that Emirati weapons had reached the group’s strongholds in Abyan, Shabwa, Seiyun and even Yafa.

The UAE handed over the “fight against terrorism” file to Mohsen al-Wali, who was serving as deputy governor of the so-called Yafa Emirate led by al-Mirfadi.

Al-Wali launched a recruitment of 6 brigades from Abyan under the name of “combating terrorism”, through which he aims to control the strongholds of his opponents in the central regions of Abyan.

The UAE’s move to ISIS comes in light of the escalating differences with Saudi Arabia, which move al-Qaeda, and this was highlighted by the escalation of bomb attacks against the UAE-backed Southern transitional Council (STC)’s convoys in Abyan during an attempt to strengthen its forces in Hadramout and Shabwa provinces.

Saudi Arabia fails to resolve differences between Al-Alimi council members

The UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) admitted that the Saudi-led coalition countries prevented the return of Aidarus al-Zoubaidi, the head of STC to the city of Aden, According to Media outlets affiliated with the STC.

Pro-STC newspaper reported that the failure to return of “Riyadh-formed Presidential Council”, to Aden, is due to real differences between members of the Council. The differences also caused the failure to hold a meeting of the Council in the Saudi capital Riyadh as previously scheduled.

The head of Riyadh-formed Presidential Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, failed to convince members to hold the meeting, sources said, noting that the three members (Faraj Al-Bahsani, Othman Majali, and Tariq Affash declared war on Al-Alimi, because of their disagreement with his orientations with the “STC”.

Sources attributed the dispute to the fact that Al-Alimi wants to impose his decisions on everyone without consensus and not taken into account the rest of the members loyal to the UAE and Turkey, in a clear indication that Saudi Arabia prevented the return of al-Zoubaidi to Aden.

The sources said that Al-Alimi submitted a proposal to Saudi Arabia to overthrow his seven deputies, and appoint one deputy next to him, so that he can manage the situation in the southern provinces, which are under the control of the coalition-backed militia.

Saudi Arabia has failed to resolve dispute between the council’s members since they were summoned by Khalid bin Salman, who is responsible for the Yemeni file, after his appointment as defense minister in early October. Also Saudis prevented a number of members from returning to Aden, including Aidarous al-Zoubaidi, whose militia are taken control over Ma’ashiq Palace.

During the past few days, Rashad Al-Alimi appeared in a television interview with the Saudi-funded channel “Al-Arabiya”, admitting his inability and abject failure in managing Aden, and his council does not have a headquarters in the city except four rooms and a bathroom rented from the Hills Club in the Haqat area near the Ma’ashiq Palace in the Crater area.

The UAE prevented three members of the Al-Alimi Council loyal to it, Tariq Afash, Aidarous Al-Zoubaidi, Faraj Al-Bahsani, from attending the meeting of the Council on Wednesday in Riyadh, registering their attendance online for fear of being detained and not allowing them to leave later from the Saudi authorities.

The sources pointed out that one of the tribal notables in Mahra intervened and prevented the abduction of the leader Abu Madram, and took him to his home.

On his twitter account, “Abu Siraj”, attributed the abduction attempt by pro-coalition intelligence, due to to his demands to release the leader of the revolutionary movement, Asaad Sakina, who was kidnapped by the UAE-backed militia in the Crater area, at the end of last December, and other political detainees in the prisons of the Emirates militia in Aden

What Is Behind US Enablement of Muslim Brotherhood's Role in Yemen?

Although the forces of the US-Saudi aggression are recording more collapse and confusion in Yemen, the coalition took a unified political stance towards continuing the blockade and starvation war against the people of Yemen.

This confirms that there is a political mentality behind the positions of Riyadh, the UAE and the Brotherhood in Yemen. However, this mentality does not want to control the acts of Saudi Arabia and the UAE. It left Riyadh and Abu Dhabi prey to more failures within the framework of preparing the situation for a direct US intervention in Yemen.

During the past two months, the governorates of southern and eastern Yemen were the scene of a new conflict. Riyadh allied with its sworn enemy in the Brotherhood, the Islah Party, with the aim of fabricating a conflict that would lead to calls for “Hadramawt independence” being brought out into the open. However, Saudi Arabia's cooperation with the Brotherhood soon evaporated, as Saudi Arabia returned to attacking the Brotherhood in Yemen, amid the ongoing arrangements for holding a conference for cooperation and friendship between the United States and the Yemeni Brotherhood in Washington on January 9.

Little US Blow to the Saudi Glass House

Saudi Arabia feels marginalized after Washington dealt directly with the Brotherhood in Yemen, which Riyadh considers as a terrorist organization. In addition, Riyadh considered itself the party authorized to take any decisions regarding the areas controlled by the coalition, and in light of that feeling it took many positions with the support of the US. then it was surprised that Washington no longer attaches importance to the Saudi role in Yemen.

As it works to marginalize the pro-aggression government in Yemen, Riyadh found itself in the same position of marginalization by the Americans.

Huge Financial Allocations for Saudi-backed Government While Yemenis Starving to Death

Economists in the areas controlled by the US-Saudi aggression revealed on Sunday that the salary of a minister in the Saudi-backed government amounts to eight thousand dollars per month. In addition to personal funds worth 25 million riyals per month, and an amount of 30 thousand Saudi riyals for “subsistence” provided by the countries involved in aggression, in addition to receiving armored cars and four-wheel drive cars for each minister.

Last December, the activists revealed that the members of the Council of Saudi-Emirati tool receive what amounts to one billion and 750 million riyals as monthly personal funds for each member beside the salaries, in addition to what they get from Saudi Arabia in foreign currency.

Official documents leaked last month revealed scandals of the Saudi-backed government, represented by the employment of a large number of sons and relatives of government officials in diplomatic positions and the creation of illegal external technical attachés.

The extent of corruption has also been revealed in the theft of scholarships seized by the sons and relatives of officials and leaders of the Saudi-backed government

Yemen Plans $130 Million Port, Road in Mahra to Move Minerals

Yemen plans to start building a port in the Qishn area of the eastern Mahra region at a cost of $130 million in two months, Deputy Transport Minister Naser Shuraif said.

This week, the government approved a deal with Ajham Energy & Mining Co. for the construction of the Arabian Sea port in an area bordering Oman and involving a 50-year concession, Shuraif said by phone.

The deal stipulates the construction of the port within about three years and includes building a road for $45 million to transport the minerals to the maritime hub.

Pro-coalition government admits deal to lease Qishn port in Mahra

The government loyal to Saudi-led coalition countries, headed by Moein Abdulmalik, has recognized a deal to lease the historic port of Qishn in Mahra province, eastern Yemen, to an Emirati company.

“Reuters” news agency quoted an official in Abdulmalik’s government, who did not reveal his identity, as saying that “the value of the deal to lease the port amounted to 100 million dollars, to carry out mining activity.”

The official explained that the government approved the contract signed with the Emirati company “AJHAM” to establish the sea port in the Ras Sherwin area in the Qishn district, with “a construction and operation system.”

The project includes the construction of a port consisting of a promontory on several levels, including a 1,000-meter-long breakwater, a 300-meter-long sea pier for ships docking, and a draft of 14 meters in its first phase, the official added.

He indicated that the port would be dedicated to exporting limestone and other minerals, without disclosing their type or the duration of the contract.

The spokesman for the Mahra sit-in committee opposing the foreign occupation in the province, Ali Mubarak Mahamed, considered the agreement to lease the port of Qishn a flagrant violation of Yemeni sovereignty.

He confirmed that the sit-in committee categorically rejected the agreement from the outset, as the decision was vague and unknown and was issued by a party that is not authorized to sign agreements with countries.

Mahamad accused the Riyadh-formed Presidential Council, head by Rashad Al-Alimi, and Moein Abdulmalik’s government of “legitimizing the steps of the Saudi-Emirati occupation in Mahra province.”

Pro-coalition government sets impossible conditions for paying IDPs’ salaries

The government loyal to the Saudi-led coalition set impossible conditions on displaced employees in the areas under its control in exchange for their payment, which coincides with a new escalation of the displaced after the suspension of their financial dues.

Saudi newspaper “Asharq Al-Awsat” quoted sources in pro- coalition government as saying: “Among the conditions is the need for weekly attendance of employees to their alternative workplaces in Aden at least.”

The paper pointed out that this condition was rejected by displaced employees whose salaries are not enough to rent a house, and are demanding a subsistence and transportation allowance.

Saudi Regime Must Understand Oman's Efforts Last Chance for Peace with Yemen

After the Omani delegation left Sana'a, regional and international attention turned to Muscat. No white smoke is expected to rise, despite Oman's great efforts to resolve the situation in Yemen and sustain peace, those efforts collide with American and regional intransigence and arrogance on the part of the UAE and Saudi regimes.

The Omani delegation to Sana'a conveyed new ideas regarding Sana'a airport by expanding the number of direct destinations to and from it, and easing control over the port of Hodeidah, while the big problem remained in the salaries. Technical proposals in Sana’a airport, Hodeidah port and salaries were carried by the Omani delegation, and discussed with the leadership in Sana’a, which reaffirmed two important matters:

The first is that the path to peace in Yemen is easy when there is a serious intention on the US-Saudi aggression side. Proving seriousness in the humanitarian aspect represents the entrance towards political solutions by separating it from the political bargaining table.

The other thing is that returning to the fight is something that Sana'a does not fear, as the aggression is trying to portray that in the media. Maintaining the blockade is more dangerous than igniting the fronts, and starving to death is not a characteristic of the Yemenis, but keening on the blood of Yemenis forced Sana’a to extend the truce and give opportunities for calm.

Mohammed Ali al-Houthi: Truce extension rejected in light of continued aggression, blockade

Member of the Supreme Political Council, Mohammed Ali Al-Houthi, on Monday said that there are many obstacles in light of the aggression and the blockade, and therefore the extension of the truce was rejected.

“We cannot live in a state of no peace and no war,” Mohammed Al-Houthi added during an expanded meeting with the leadership of the local, executive, judicial, security and social authorities in Dhamar province, which reviewed the administrative, service and social situation in the province.

At the meeting, Mohammed Al-Houthi indicated that the enemy is working on two parts, a conspiracy to tear the internal ranks, including stirring up partisan, sectarian and regional strife and feuds, and the second part is by imposing a siege and closing the screws until services and institutions collapse.

“We are waging a military, security, administrative and service battle in various fields,” he said, affirming that what was presented during the meeting would be raised to the higher authorities to do the necessary work.

Houthis demand civil service wage dispute resolved before any ceasefire talks

Internationally recognised Yemeni government says it is committed to paying state employees' salaries

Iran-backed Houthi rebels have repeated their demand that a dispute with Yemen's internationally recognised government over civil servants' wages must be resolved before they can agree to a permanent ceasefire.

It came as the Yemeni government said it had reaffirmed a commitment to paying salaries, and a former government minister said the Houthis' claims were nothing new.

“We are working to get to a clear stage in Yemen where we can reach a truce or a permanent ceasefire,” rebel spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam told the Houthi-run Al Masirah TV on Monday morning.

Efforts to restart peace negotiations between the Houthis and the Yemeni government have stalled in recent months, with the salaries of civil servants a major sticking point.

Mr Abdulsalam said any solution must be based on disbursing employee salaries from oil and gas revenue, according to the 2014 budget — the year the civil war began.

Other Houthi conditions include the reopening of Sanaa airport and roads, said the rebel spokesman.

Barring an official agreement to halt the violence, a return to full-scale war will remain an option despite the relative calm, former Yemeni diplomat, ambassador and Deputy Foreign Minister Mustapha Noman told The National.

“Both sides of the military equation have reached the point of fatigue and aren't rushing towards resumption of military actions,” he said.

It is the “strong will” in Riyadh to stay on the path of peace that has kept the truce unofficially in effect, Mr Noman said.

“Of course, one shouldn't disregard the possibility of a military agreement between Riyadh and the Houthis, although this can't be concluded without serious guaranteed commitments that hostilities in Yemen will not start again.”

Mr Noman also said the Houthis' comments on salaries are “nothing new”.

Ansarullah: Yemen Has Upper Hand in Deterrence, Seeks ‘Permanent Ceasefire’ with Saudis

The spokesman for Yemen's Ansarullah resistance movement reiterated the National Salvation Government’s determination to strike a permanent ceasefire, stressing that the military might of the Yemeni Armed Forces and their allies deters all threats.

Mohammad Abdul-Salam, who is also head of Yemen's national negotiating delegation, told the Al-Masirah television network that the Sana’a-based government is resolved to reach a strong and permanent truce, and is serious about the separation of humanitarian issues from political and military matters.

“What put the brakes on Saudi-led coalition strikes on Yemeni civilians and pillage of the country’s oil reserves and natural resources was the fear of painful retaliatory opportunities from Yemeni soldiers and their allied Popular Committees,” Abdul-Salam noted.

He said the enemy is extremely disappointed because of the unity of the Yemeni society, and the latest parades of troops from various units of the Yemeni Armed Forces also proved that Yemeni troops have the upper hand in terms of self-defense and deterrence.

“Some member states of the Saudi-led coalition sought the extension of the UN-sponsored ceasefire without any additional clauses. We, in return, did not accept such obstinacy. The other party is after a ceasefire, which does not care about humanitarian issues so that it can sort out its priorities within the framework of war and siege,” Abdul-Salam pointed out.

The senior Yemeni official went on to emphasize that the National Salvation Government wants to end the humanitarian crisis in the country.

“[The National Salvation Government] is looking for a permanent ceasefire, and has already presented its standpoints to the Omani diplomatic delegation. Any solution to the Yemen conflict must secure payment of salaries to all civil servants from oil and gas revenues, and must draw on the 2014 budget,” the Ansarullah spokesman said.

Abdul-Salam stated that any solution should include the reopening of airports and seaports and the release of prisoners.

“Our demands are legitimate and realistic,” he said.

Mohammed Abdulsalam: There is new formula and rules that have been put forward in salary file

The head of the National Delegation, Mohammed Abdulsalam, said, in a statement to Almasirah, Sunday, that since the end of the truce, the National Delegation has held intensive discussions with several parties.
In a statement to Al-Masirah channel today, the head of the national delegation confirmed that one of the most prominent achievements of the year 2022 was the armistice that led to ending the oil derivatives crisis that the Yemeni people were suffering from.
He indicated that the opening of Sana'a International Airport, although it was for one destination, was a breakthrough for many Patients, merchants and travelers.
Abdulsalam noted that talking about permanent ceasefire must be met with permanent lifting of siege, the payment of salaries, and the departure of the occupier, stressing that we cannot go to political dialogue in light of a complex humanitarian and economic crisis. The head of the National Delegation warned of any economic measures targeting our country that might turn the tables and bring us back to square one.
Abdulsalam stressed the need to separate the humanitarian issue from military conflict, indicating that Sana'a's demands a solution to all Yemenis, without exception, throughout the territory of Yemen.
Abdulsalam linked any progress in the negotiations to progress in the humanitarian issue represented in the payment of salaries and the opening of airports and ports, stressing that the salary issue must be separated in all circumstances.

US-Saudi State of No Peace Nor War in Yemen No Longer Acceptable

The course of integrated confrontation with the countries involved in aggression on the one hand, and responsible engagement with any sincere efforts to make an honorable peace on the other hand, took a new dimension in light of the changes and Omani mediation.

That path was characterized by seriousness and rejection of the state of no peace and no war that the countries involved in aggression are trying to make as a fait accompli.

The whole world is well aware of Sana’a’s demands, which are, in fact, fair and legitimate demands, represented by paying employees’ salaries from oil and gas revenues, opening Sana’a airport, lifting the siege on the ports of Hodeidah, and ending any foreign presence on Yemeni lands. These just demands that affect the life of the Yemenis can only be opposed by an enemy of the people of Yemen and those who do not want to achieve peace and close the confrontation and war.

The countries involved in aggression take the slogan of peace and negotiations as a phased tactic behind which they aim to rearrange their cards to continue their aggression and their efforts to plunder the wealth of Yemen and control their sea outlets, islands and coastal cities. These are matters that the aggression bears the consequences of due to its insistence on continuing the war, the siege and occupation of the southern and eastern Yemeni governorates and islands.

Oman has made commendable efforts in its good offices to find opportunities to achieve a lasting and just peace that guarantees Yemen's security, sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity. However, Oman’s praiseworthy efforts collided with the arrogant stance of the aggression and its local tools and hostile policy towards Yemenis, which is something that has become known to all internally and externally.

Sentence of 11 Years in Prison against 35 Female Opinion Activists in Saudi Arabia

Human rights sources revealed that one collective verdict was issued against 35 female opinion activists in Saudi Arabia, to 11 years in prison, without guaranteeing the minimum standards of justice.

Thewina Organization for Human Rights stated that the judicial authorities in Saudi Arabia have not stopped issuing unfair rulings against female activists and detainees in their prisons for years.

The organization reported that in late December, the Specialized Criminal Court issued a collective sentence of 11 years in prison to 35 female detainees, in a dangerous precedent for human rights violations in Saudi Arabia, the price of which was paid by the detained female activists and human rights defenders.

According to the organization, the verdict came against the activists for expressing their opinions on social media. It was not satisfied with the arbitrary arrests and enforced disappearances they were subjected to, but rather reinforced this by issuing a single collective verdict.

The names of the detainees against whom the verdict was issued were not known, which indicates that they were denied their legal right to appoint a defense lawyer, as indicated by Article 4 of the Criminal Procedure Law. It stipulates that every detainee has the right to appoint a lawyer during the investigation and trial stages.

Saudi Arabia: Government Agents Infiltrate Wikipedia, Sentence Independent Wikipedia Administrators to Prison

New York and Beirut): The Saudi Arabian government infiltrated Wikipedia by recruiting the organization's highest ranked administrators in the country to serve as government agents to control information about the country and prosecuting those who contributed critical information about political detainees, said SMEX and Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN) today.

Following an internal investigation in 2022, Wikimedia terminated all of its administrators in Saudi Arabia in December. DAWN and SMEX documented Wikimedia's infiltration by the Saudi government based on interviews with sources close to the company and the imprisoned administrators.

"The Saudi government's infiltration of Wikipedia with government agents acting as independent editors, and imprisonment of non-compliant editors, demonstrates not only its persistent use of spies inside international organizations but the dangers of attempting to produce independent content in the country," said Sarah Leah Whitson, DAWN's Executive Director. "It's wildly irresponsible for international organizations and businesses to assume their affiliates can ever operate independently of, or safely from, Saudi government control."

[Sanaa gov.} Minister of Human Rights: Saudi Regime Brought Dozens of Expatriates to Mock Courts

The Minister of Human Rights confirmed that the Saudi regime had subjected dozens of Yemeni expatriates to mock trials, while the families of the victims of the recent Saudi execution confirmed the refusal of Saudi officials to give them any information.

During a press conference held by the Human Rights Office in the capital, Sana'a, regarding the crime of executing Yemeni expatriates by the Saudi regime, the Minister of Human Rights, Ali Al-Dailami, said, "We have dozens of complaints about similar cases, and the people are being blackmailed."

Al-Dailami stressed that the Saudi regime brought dozens of detainees to mock courts in a formal procedure far from the provisions of Sharia and the principles of international law, considering that failure to hand over the bodies is a crime added to the chain of crimes of the Saudi regime.

Al-Dailami explained that the prisons of the Saudi regime are in the thousands, and they are suffering the ugliest forms of torture and are threatened with execution. He added that the crime of the Saudi regime begins with kidnapping, then enforced disappearance, then execution without a fair trial and without giving them the right to defend themselves, indicating that the years 2020-2021 were full of serious liquidation crimes carried out by the Saudi regime against expatriates outside the framework of the law.

Saudi-Arabien tut alles, damit die Welt vom Öl abhängig bleibt

Die Saudis finanzieren Hunderte von Studien gegen Elektroautos und finden Verbündete in US-Herstellern des Agrar-Benzins Ethanol. (…)
Kleptocrat of the Year: Mohammed bin Salman

This was the year the Saudi strongman was supposed to become a pariah. Instead, he’s gotten away with murder.

Part of MBS’s extraordinary 2022 stemmed, in part, from realities beyond his control. For instance, with Russia’s self-inflicted implosion in Ukraine gutting Moscow’s place as a global hydrocarbon power, Saudi Arabia’s leverage over oil competitors has only increased since the expanded war began. Not only was MBS able to step in and offer Moscow a lifeline, investing hundreds of millions of dollars in Russia’s remaining major energy companies, but Riyadh even increased imports from Russia—allowing MBS to export more Saudi oil and rake in more money in the process. (MBS’s family’s wealth is estimated in the trillions, and there’s little reason to believe MBS doesn’t have the final say over its control.)

Then, in October, Riyadh revealed just how much leverage it now maintains over Western consumers as well. Using its new partnership with Moscow, MBS and Saudi officials convinced the OPEC-Plus cartel to cut overall oil production output—effectively gutting Washington’s efforts to stave off high gas prices. The latter move was especially galling for the White House, coming after what it thought was a secret agreement with MBS to increase oil production and thus keep pump prices low. Yet there was little Washington could do in response, with consumers forced to swallow the higher prices.

Look at what’s taken place domestically over the past year. In September, MBS officially became Saudi Arabia’s prime minister, effectively formalizing his status as the de facto head of the kingdom. Any questions about his role—or his future—in the Saudi governance structure have been effectively eliminated. So too have any domestic threats to his power. And as seen with Saudi Arabia’s mass execution of over 80 men in a single day earlier this year, any questions about MBS’s penchant for violence have likewise ceased.

Abroad, MBS has overseen a wholesale effort to recast his country’s image from a bastion of intolerance and extremism to one that is far more chic, and far more appealing, than previously imagined. Working with Western consultancy firms like McKinsey and public relations firms like Edelman, Saudi Arabia under MBS has run a master class in “reputation laundering” and in using Western services to transform its identity from that of a kleptocratic dictatorship into a regime ready to be welcomed into polite society.

A Better Biden Doctrine

Two years in, how well has Biden kept his 2020 promises on foreign policy?

Biden deserves partial credit for reducing U.S. support for Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen, ramping up diplomatic efforts to end the war, and approving drone strikes more sparingly than Trump and Barack Obama. The president announced early on that, in accordance with his campaign commitment, he would end assistance for “offensive” Saudi operations in Yemen, offering only “defensive” support. But the administration has yet to fully explain this distinction. In practice, the Biden administration has continued to enable Saudi planes to bomb long-suffering Yemenis. If he wants to stick to his pre-presidential promises, Biden needs to end all support for the Saudi war.

Despite Broad Opposition in Congress, US Policy toward the War in Yemen Is Unchanged

The Biden administration’s turn against ending support for the Saudi-led campaign in Yemen stems largely from geopolitical considerations. Relations between the US and Saudi Arabia have soured in the recent term over disagreements on oil production and Iran policy. The kingdom has turned toward China, a major US adversary, for future collaboration.

Although not completely doing away with the long-standing relationship with Washington, Saudi Arabia is quickly considering the benefits of diversifying into China in this new multipolar world order. Riyadh has recently hosted a summit with China and other Gulf states to deepen ties in their strategic partnerships. In this era of increasingly fierce competition with China, Washington is keeping all of its allies as close as it possibly can by catering to the leadership even though the fact of the matter is that Saudi Arabia is the client state here to the US world empire.

The lucrative trade implications for US arms manufacturers sit at the core of decision-making for the American empire on involvement in Yemen. Indeed, the lobbying efforts by Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Raytheon led to the Trump veto of the first attempt to end US involvement in the conflict. The defense industry’s mutual financial benefit with Washington exemplifies the notion that war is the health of the state.

All of this amounts to a sense of business-as-usual resignation with this chance to put a stop to just one of America’s foreign interventions snatched away by the hand of the empire at the last moment. Perhaps the vote will come up again in Washington at some point. Meanwhile, the people of Yemen head into another new year of dread as the light at the end of the tunnel fades.

Why the War Party Needed To Demonize Iran

When the 77-Years War ended in 1991, the Shiite theocracy ensconced in Tehran was an unfortunate albatross on the Persian people. But it was no threat to America’s homeland safety and security, either.

The very idea that Tehran is an expansionist power bent on exporting terrorism to the rest of the world is a giant fiction and tissue of lies invented by the Washington War Party and its Bibi Netanyahu branch in order to win political support for their confrontationist policies.

Indeed, the three-decades-long demonization of Iran has served one overarching purpose. Namely, it has enabled both branches of the War Party to conjure up a fearsome enemy. In turn, this threat is used to justify aggressive policies that call for a constant state of military mobilization and maintenance of a vast armada of expeditionary forces – forces which bleed that nation’s fiscal resources but do nothing at all for the security and safety of the American homeland.

Indeed, Iran has not been demonized by happenstance. When the Cold War officially ended in 1991, the Cheney/neocon cabal then domiciled in the Pentagon deeply feared the kind of drastic demobilization of the U.S. military-industrial complex that was warranted by the suddenly more pacific strategic environment. That is to say, the kind of drastic reduction in military spending which occurred after both WWI and WWII, and appropriately so.

But having turned Iran into an enemy, Imperial Washington was just getting started when 1990 rolled around. Once again in the name of "oil security" it plunged the American war machine into the politics and religious fissures of the Persian Gulf, and did so on account of the above referenced small-potatoes conflict that had no bearing whatsoever on the safety and security of American citizens.

As US Ambassador Glaspie rightly told Saddam Hussein on the eve of Hussein’s Kuwait invasion, America had no dog in that hunt.

In short, it did not matter who controlled the southern tip of the Rumaila field – the brutal dictator of Baghdad or the opulent emir of Kuwait. Neither the price of oil, nor the peace of America, nor the security of Europe nor the future of Asia depended upon it.

Yemen’s forgotten children

With Christmas and new year centred around children, how many of us have given a thought over the holiday season to the children of Yemen — and how much of the general public knows of Britain’s role in their suffering

Appearing in the Channel 4 documentary Britain’s Hidden War the same year, a former Saudi air force officer explained Saudi Arabia “can’t keep the [British-made] Typhoon [aircraft] in the air without the British. The pilots they can’t fly it without maintenance and without the logistics.”

We also know British military personnel are based in the command and control centre for Saudi airstrikes and have access to target lists.

And according to a 2019 Daily Mail report, British Special Boat Service soldiers are on the ground in Yemen, operating as Forward Air Controllers, requesting air support from the Royal Saud Air Force.

On the world stage, Britain provides diplomatic cover for Saudi Arabia’s ongoing slaughter.

“The UK is the penholder at the UN over Yemen [the lead country on the security council, with the power to draft resolutions and statements], and some former Conservative Cabinet ministers, notably Andrew Mitchell, say Britain has been protecting Saudi Arabia from criticism there,” the Guardian reported in 2018.

All of this extensive support is the reason Dr David Wearing, lecturer in International Relations at the University of Sussex and author of AngloArabia: Why Gulf Wealth Matters to Britain, argued in 2018: “The reality is that Washington and London could have stopped the Saudis’ war any time they liked.”

Rüstungsexporte nach Saudi-Arabien

Wirtschaft/Antwort - 03.01.2023 (hib 4/2023)

Food prices skyrocket as currency plunges to a new low

Yemen’s currency has hit a new low, triggering food costs to soar in areas under the control of the internationally recognized government.

The Yemeni riyal plummeted Thursday to a very low in the financial market, with 1277 riyals to the US dollar in Yemen’s interim capital Aden.

Residents in the port city of Aden said all food prices soared due to a sudden drop in the currency’s value after it remained relatively stable in the past months.

The legitimate government seems to have lost control of the chaotic exchange system, holding the Iran-backed Houthis responsible for the deterioration of the currency value.

The high prices of petroleum products, especially diesel, in Yemen forced many farmers to use solar energy to operate pumps to extract groundwater to irrigate their crops. Farmers expressed their satisfaction with the use of the solar irrigation system in light of the scarcity and high prices of the fuel needed to operate the pumps. Meanwhile, specialists warned of the danger of digging random wells in the depleted groundwater, adding that the use of solar energy for irrigation in large spaces and without engineering planning causes a sharp drop in the water level.

Oil facilities in Yemen change hands in $21.6 million deal

A global energy company Tuesday acquired oil producing facilities in war-torn Yemen from another international firm. The move comes as the country’s Houthi rebels have repeatedly targeted terminals and tankers in efforts to stop their rivals from exporting oil.

Zenith Netherlands, a subsidiary of Zenith Energy Ltd., announced that it has agreed to acquire energy assets of Vienna-based OMV in Yemen, in a deal worth more than $21.6 million.

The deal is still pending the approval of authorities in Yemen and Austria. There was no immediate comment from Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

“The acquisition of OMV Yemen represents a very significant milestone for Zenith Energy,” Andrea Cattaneo, Zenith’s CEO, said. “The existing production from the asset and, more importantly, the near-term future oil and natural gas production ... position Zenith on an extremely exciting organic growth trajectory.”

The largest of OMV’s assets was its shares in the al-Uqlah oil field in central Yemen, which is controlled by the internationally recognized government, according to the deal announced by Zenith Netherlands.

The field produced an average of 6,000 barrels per day as of January 2022 because of a lack of drilling activities, the announcement said. That amount was down from around 15,000 barrels per day before Yemen’s civil war.

OMV also sold its shares in two smaller fields in central Yemen, along with an estimated of 571 billion cubic feet of recoverable gas, the announcement said.

Yemen govt rejects Zenith Netherlands oil acquisition

The internationally recognized government of Yemen has flatly denied a statement by international oil company Zenith Netherlands regarding the acquisition of oil fields managed by OMV in Yemen’s southern province of Shabwa, saying that the company is ineligible to acquire oil assets in the country.

Yemen’s Oil Ministry said that it had not authorized the sale of OMV oil facilities in Yemen to the Dutch company, accusing both companies of releasing “misleading” information.

The Yemeni ministry said that for any purchase deal to be approved, the purchasing business must be multinational, well known, as well as financially and technically competent.

Zenith Netherlands does not meet the ministry’s financial and technical conditions for relinquishing OMV’s shares, it added.

“The Ministry of Oil and Minerals holds OMV and Zenith companies legally liable for disseminating such misleading information.”

US offers $5m for help in tracking down senior Al Qaeda leader in Yemen

Ibrahim Al Banna has survived repeated American attempts to kill him with missiles fired from drones

The US is offering up to $5 million for information on the whereabouts of Ibrahim Al Banna, a senior leader of Al Qaeda's affiliate in Yemen.

Al Banna, also known as Abu Ayman Al Masri, is the last surviving founding member of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the US State Department said. He served as the terrorist group’s chief of security and also provided military and security guidance to the terror group.

“In a 2010 article for AQAP’s English-language online magazine, Al Banna described the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States as virtuous and threatened to target Americans worldwide in response to US actions overseas,” the State Department said.

It appealed for information on Al Banna through its Rewards for Justice programme on Thursday.

Want peace in Yemen? First, restore the balance of power

The Houthis might possess less monopoly if a more unified coalition opposed them. Unfortunately, elements loyal to the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), which succeeded the Republic of Yemen Government led by former President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, often diverged from tribes allied with the Southern Transition Council (STC). The STC is part of the PLC but is not always aligned with it.

All parties in the coalition agree on significantly limiting Iran’s role in Yemen. While details matter, at a minimum, the coalition would undoubtedly support a policy prohibiting Iran from providing weapons, equipment, and training to armed groups in Yemen. Given Iran’s overt and routine violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions against arms smuggling, the United States and the international community would also support this stance. However, it will take more than statements of resolve to constrain Iran’s leverage over the Houthis and their efforts to arm and develop them as a military proxy.

https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/menasource/want-peace-in-yemen-first-restore-the-balance-of-power/

My remark: The US claims to be the policeman of the world, once again. It’s not business of the US “restore the balance of power” or whatever in Yemen. If thew Houthis are more powerful now compared to seven years ago, this is due to US interference in Yemen, as it has happened in many countries where US interference led to a catastrophe. Look at the authors’ biographies and you know why they produce such propaganda stuff.

How I got the inside story of the UAE's liberation of Aden

25 Days to Aden is a remarkable book about the struggle to save a Yemeni port city

That was it like to write the first military history of the UAE at war, using the words of the soldiers, sailors and airmen themselves? This was the task I set myself in writing the forthcoming book 25 Days to Aden, which recounts the climactic struggle to liberate the Yemeni port city of Aden before the commencement of Eid Al Fitr in July 2015.

This was the first battle of the Yemen war, which started when Yemen’s government asked for international support from the UN Security Council and the Arab League. The Gulf Arabs drew a line in the sand to stop Iran-backed Houthi tribesmen from dominating the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula and seizing the key shipping lanes that connect the eastern and western hemispheres via the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.

As a result, it took more than five years to meticulously research, write and fact-check 25 Days to Aden. To really, truly understand a battle, one must speak to many participants to work out the events that never made it into the official records, and one must peruse the records to find the things that humans forget. Just as important, a historian also needs to make the closest map study of the terrain and then walk the ground. This is what I did in Aden.

The story of 25 Days to Aden belongs to the Emirati men and women who fought the battle alongside their Yemeni partners. The book is dedicated to the five UAE troops who were killed in the battle and it is only fitting that the last word of this article goes to one of the exceptional young people who fought in (and survived) the battle of Aden.

Saudi Regime Crimes In Yemen’s Bordering Areas Are A Disgrace To Humanity

The Saudi regime continues to commit horrific crimes against civilians in the bordering areas. These crimes also target the African migrants that pass through Yemen to the Kingdom, which are faced with international silence.

Day after another, the Saudi regime asserts its excessive bloodshed and ending lives without respecting the slightest Islamic principles, human values, customs, and international laws that prohibit the the killing of human beings.

The latest statistics of civilian casualties as a result of the Saudi crimes in bordering areas within the province of Saada, northern Yemen.

During the past two weeks, more than 50 civilians, including African immigrants, have been killed or wounded as a result of the Saudi bombing that targeted residential areas in Munabbeh, Razih and a number of other bordering areas.

A recent health statistic revealed the Saudi regime’s criminality against innocent civilians on the Yemeni borders, confirmed by the director of “Razih Rural Hospital,” Abdullah Musre’ in a press statement, that the hospital had received, since the signing of the armistice agreement in April, 111 dead and 796 wounded, who were killed as a result of the Saudi bombing of the Shada district.

The director of “Munabbeh Rural” Hospital, Ali Al-Ayashi, stated that the number of coalition casualties that the hospital has received since the beginning of this year has reached 169 dead, including Africans, in addition to 1,833 wounded civilians.

In front of all these crimes, hospitals in the border areas are unable to provide what is necessary for critical cases that are treated as a result of the lack of capabilities in these hospitals, which suffer from war, siege and scarcity of medicines, just like the rest of the health sector in Yemen, where these hospitals are forced to transfer most cases to hospitals in the cities of Saada and Sana’a

Female artist uses paintings to call for reconciliation, unity in war-torn Yemen

A female Yemeni artist uses her paintings to tell more Yemenis about the country's rich history, time-honored traditions, and splendid culture, as a way to plead for peace and unity in the divided country.

"In my paintings, I used the letters from the ancient Musnad scripts and symbols from the Kingdom of Saba to show how rich our history is as a country," Susan Kailian, a Sanaa-based artist, said to Xinhua during her personal exhibition held in the Houthi-controlled capital.

The Yemeni artist believed that informing more Yemenis about their country's history would help the war-torn country reconcile.

"One who does not know his or her own history cannot recognize the present nor create a future. The Yemeni civilization has always been neglected, therefore I liked to shed light on glimpses of our history, which has plenty of proud achievements," the artist stated.

She added that, from a historical perspective, Yemenis, whether they are from the south or north, are the descendants of one civilization.
