NSA Whistleblower Edward Snowden warnt vor “turn-key tyranny”
Frage an Geheimdienstkoordinator Clapper im März 2013:
"Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans?"

Während Präsident Obama und sein Geheimdienstkoordinator James Clapper versuchen Schadensbegrenzung zu betreiben, wird die Dimension der Überwachung in zahlreichen Artikeln des Guardian, der Washington Post und anderen Medien ausführlich erläutert. Internet-Forensiker Guido Rudolphi im Schweizer Tagesanzeiger:
"Diese Abhör- und Mitleseoperationen sind weder in den USA noch im Ausland erlaubt. Für den amerikanischen Kongress ist es hochnotpeinlich, dass er nun zugeben muss, Hand geboten zu haben dafür, dass Hunderte Millionen Menschen bespitzelt werden konnten. Im Vergleich dazu war die Stasi ein Wassertropfen im Meer."
Edward Snowden im Interview mit Glenn Greenwald:
"(...) A new leader will be elected. They'll flip the switch. Say that because of the crisis because of the dangers that we face in the world. Some new and unpredicted threat. We need more authority, we need more power and there will be nothing the people can do at that point to oppose it. It will be turn-key tyranny."
Snowden gegen den die Obama Administration wahrscheinlich Ermittlungen anstrengen wird, erklärte weiterhin:
" The NSA has built an infrastructure that allows it to intercept almost everything. With this capability, the vast majority of human communications are automatically ingested without targeting. If I wanted to see your emails or your wife's phone, all I have to do is use intercepts. I can get your emails, passwords, phone records, credit cards. (...) The NSA routinely lies in response to congressional inquiries about the scope of surveillance in America. I believe that when [senator Ron] Wyden and [senator Mark] Udall asked about the scale of this, they [the NSA] said it did not have the tools to provide an answer. We do have the tools and I have maps showing where people have been scrutinised most. We collect more digital communications from America than we do from the Russians.I know the media likes to personalise political debates, and I know the government will demonise me. (...) I'm willing to sacrifice all of that because I can't in good conscience allow the US government to destroy privacy, internet freedom and basic liberties for people around the world with this massive surveillance machine they're secretly building. (...) I don't want to live in a world where there's no privacy and therefore no room for intellectual exploration and creativity. (...) I carefully evaluated every single document I disclosed to ensure that each was legitimately in the public interest. There are all sorts of documents that would have made a big impact that I didn't turn over, because harming people isn't my goal. Transparency is. The only thing I fear is the harmful effects on my family, who I won't be able to help any more. That's what keeps me up at night.

“Die USA verletzen das Völkerrecht, treten die Menschenwürde mit Füßen und rechtfertigen mit juristischen Gutachten sogar Foltermethoden.(…) Bush befahl den Überwachungsstaat, Obama baut ihn aus. (…) Die CIA verfolgt Kontobewegungen in aller Welt. Die National Security Agency sammelt täglich 1.7 Milliarden E-Mails, SMS und Telefonate, auch aus Deutschland. (...) Die Praktiken zeigen, dass da in einigen Bereichen keine rechtsstaatliche Regierung am Werk war, sondern nur ein paar Männer die es irgendwie schafften alle Macht an sich zu reißen. Ich bin gespannt auf Obamas Rede vor dem Brandenburger Tor.
Obama rechtfertigt die NSA Überwachung:
"Congress is continually briefed on how these are conducted. There are a whole range of safeguards involved. And federal judges are overseeing the entire program throughout."
ARD Kommentar hierzu:
"Doch wie effektiv ist diese richterliche Kontrolle? Immerhin wurde nun bekannt, dass die FISA-Richter auf Wunsch der NSA bereits seit sieben Jahren ununterbrochen vom Telekommunikationsriesen Verizon verlangen, die Verbindungsdaten sämtlicher Inlands- und Auslandsgespräche seiner Millionen Kunden herauszugeben. Niemand glaubt, dass nur Verizon betroffen ist. Für die Bürger in Deutschland heißt das: Wer immer in die USA anruft oder einen Anruf aus den USA erhält - die NSA kennt die Telefonnummern, Datum, Dauer und Aufenthaltsort der Gesprächspartner. Heimliches Mithören geht angeblich auch nur nach Zustimmung durch einen FISA-Spezialrichter. Doch Obamas Behauptung, es gebe eine "volle parlamentarische und gerichtliche Kontrolle" sei "sehr irreführend", findet Jameel Jaffer von der ACLU, Amerikas größter Anwaltsvereinigung für Bürgerrechte. Jaffer erklärt: "Viele Kongressabgeordnete haben schon erklärt, dass sie nie die Einzelheiten dieser Programme erfahren haben. Einige Senatoren, die Bescheid wissen, aber öffentlich nicht ins Detail gehen dürfen, sagen seit Monaten, dass die Administration das Gesetz in einer Weise auslegt, die die amerikanische Öffentlichkeit schockieren würde, würde sie davon erfahren. Das FISA-Gericht tagt geheim, hört nur die Regierungsseite und veröffentlicht sehr selten seine Entscheidungen."
