Estimates for troop numbers and casualties assembled in consultation with Jay Winter, Anne Samson, Christian Koller, Santanu Das and others. Casualty statistics draw on Winter’s research and include sickness and POWs who died in captivity, until mid-1919. Civilian deaths have not been included but outnumber military deaths in some countries.
Other experts and sources we have referred to for statistics on specific countries include the curators and historians from Imperial War Museums, Professor Bruce Scates, David Fitzpatrick, Maurizo Isabella, Eriks Jekabsons, Julia Eichenberg, Tomas Balkelis, David Heal, Lance Janda Yucel Yanikdag, Toomas Hiio, New Zealand History Online and PBS.
This interactive was made in collaboration with Imperial War Museums (IWM), which owns much of the film archive used. On 19 July 2014, for the centenary of the war, a transformed IWM London opened its new First World War Galleries. Researchers for IWM included Corinna Reicher and Paul Cornish.
