cp6 Südjemen und Hadi-Regierung / Southern Yemen and Hadi-government

Aden remains in the hands of southern separatists. Their media are spreading a bulk of biased reports, showing their narrative of their foes from Islah Party (labeled “Muslim Brotherhood”), the fighting at Abyan and Shabwa, their self-rule at Aden and the areas under their control. The Saudi attempt to force the Hadi government and the separatists to implement the Riyadh agreement, seems to fail.

Emirati Movement to Impose Reality on Socotra before Start of Yemeni Peace

UAE launched on Tuesday, a wide campaign to market the Yemeni island of Socotra as the eighth emirate. This coincides with the start of international moves to advance a peace process, which indicates Abu Dhabi’s efforts to seize the strategic island as a gain.

The campaign was led by the Adviser to the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Abdul Khaliq Abdullah, who published a picture of the island, which he attached to a tweet, in which he talks about the desire of the people of the island to officially join the Emirates.

Abdullah’s presentation coincided with the results of his country’s inventory, which has acquired the island since 2017, with a media campaign launched by southern and Emirati activists to demand the inclusion of the island as an eighth emirate.

Newly leaked report shows plans for Zionist settlement on Yemeni island of Socotra

Official sources in the Saudi-led coalition backed government have revealed on Tuesday the details on an Emirati plan to support a Zionist settlement in the Socotra Archipelago in Yemen.

This was reported by Yemen News Portal, based on the testimonies of Hadi’s official sources

The sources confirmed that the Khalifa Bin Zayed Foundation has adopted a project to build housing units for Israeli officers and soldiers located in the joint UAE-Zionist bases on the strategic Yemeni island.

Moreover, the sources explained that the housing project paves the way for the settlement of the families of Israeli officers, as dozens of them have been brought over to Socotra in the past weeks.

Furthermore, the same sources noted that the UAE plan aims to expand a more permanent Zionist military presence on the island, which seeks to drain the wealth and its capabilities of the Yemeni island, and turn it into a broad intelligence center.

High-way robbers make the forgotten misery of Taiz's three million residents worse

As if the Houthi militia's blockade is not enough, high-way robbers outside Aden port city ambush any fuel tank trucks heading for the besieged Taiz city forcing truckers to pay prohibitive amounts of money causing the prices of fuel to increase to prohibitive levels. Petrol and gas station owners pass the resulting increases on to customers.

The high-way robbery takes place in Toor Al-Baha unpopulated region and truck driver refusing to pay may be killed or wounded.

STC militiamen exploit the lack of governmental control in the highways to intercept the commercial (especially fuel) shipments for Taiz and make the suffering of Taiz's three million residents worse on the conditions already caused by the Houthi seven year siege.

Saudi-Emirati Occupiers, Mercenaries Fabricating Fuel Crisis in Southern Provinces

With a green light from the pro-aggression government, the local markets in the southern governorates have turned into an open market for black market hackers with oil. After the Aden Petroleum Company was selling a liter of gasoline at a price of about 700 riyals last month, it doubled the prices of the same substance and recently approved raising the price of oil in the occupied local markets to more than 24,000 riyals.

However, it failed to supply the local market with oil, even though the ports in those governorates are open and the US-Saudi aggression has not closed them, or imposed a blockade on them, like it is in the port of Hodeidah.

According to local sources, the black markets in the governorates of Aden, Lahj, Abyan, Shabwa and Hadramawt have rebounded to high levels during the past months and have become the first source for obtaining oil in the southern markets. Moreover, intensification of the conflict between the tools of aggression and its mercenaries in the occupied governorates increased, as a result of the government’s attempt to restore its economic arm in the city of Aden, represented by the Petroleum Company, which has been under the control of the STC of the Emirates for half a year.

The crises of oil have escalated in the southern markets recently, in conjunction with the pro-aggression government, led by Muin Abdul-Malik, issuing a decision restricting the import of oil to the Petroleum Company in Aden. The move caused the traders of oil to become alienated, as the company deliberately confiscated 30% of their imports for the Emirati-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) and seized them by force. The decision doubled the scope of black markets, and resulted in an increase in the price of a liter of oil to 3000 riyals, and the price of a 20-liter canister to 60,000 riyals in the occupied southern markets.

Local sources in the city of Aden accused Hadi and the STC of being involved in blackmailing citizens, fabricating crises related to oil, and colluding with black market hackers, in which petroleum and diesel are available in commercial quantities and sold at exaggerated prices.

UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie calls for protection and support for the people of Yemen, and an end to the conflict to stop human suffering

Jolie urged the international community to increase its support for the severely underfunded humanitarian response, ahead of the High Level pledging conference for Yemen to be held on 16 March, and to redouble efforts to seek an end to the violence. More than 4 million people have been displaced in the past seven years.

At a site in Lahj Governorate in south Yemen, where people who have fled home over the past few years are living in flimsy shelters, displaced families told Special Envoy Jolie how they lost their homes, loved ones and livelihoods, describing how the conflict had shattered their hopes for their children and families. Mudeera, a mother of five who has been displaced from Taiz for the past four years, said that none of her children went to school, had a birth certificate or been vaccinated. Every day she struggles to feed them anything other than tea and bread.

In north Yemen, at a site for internally displaced people, Jolie met 65-year-old Maryam, who has been displaced since 2016 and who lost her husband to the conflict. She told Jolie how three of her granddaughters had passed away because the family was unable afford the healthcare they needed.

During her visit and on International Women’s Day today, Jolie witnessed the catastrophic impact this conflict has had on Yemeni civilians

Jolie said:* ‘The level of human suffering here is unimaginable. **For every day that Yemen’s brutal conflict continues, more and more innocent lives are lost and more people will continue to suffer. **We live in a world where suffering and horror dominates headlines, but where such headlines can result in overwhelming displays of compassion and international solidarity. I hope this compassion and solidarity will be extended to the people of Yemen, who urgently need a swift and peaceful resolution to this conflict – and to other displaced people, whoever and wherever they are in the world.*

'Everyone deserves the same compassion': Angelina Jolie visits Yemen amid attack on Ukraine

Angelina Jolie is visiting war-wrecked Yemen in a show of solidarity for displaced families struggling amid the country’s ongoing civil war.

"This week a million people were forced to flee the horrific war in Ukraine. "Everyone deserves the same compassion. The lives of civilian victims of conflict everywhere are of equal value. She called the situation in Yemen "one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world."

Jolie, who is special envoy for the U.N. on refugee issues, landed in the southern coastal city of Aden to meet with families and refugees there. Aden is the seat of the internationally recognized government.

The U.N. refugee agency said it hopes that Jolie’s visit would draw attention to growing humanitarian needs in Yemen

Yemen's Houthis agree U.N. proposal to offload decaying oil tanker

Yemen's Houthi movement has signed an agreement with the United Nations to deal with a decaying oil tanker threatening to spill 1.1 million barrels of crude oil off the war-torn country's coast, a Houthi official said.

U.N. aid chief Martin Griffiths said last month that there was an agreement in principle to shift the oil from the tanker Safer to another ship. He gave no timeline.

The Safer has been stranded off Yemen's Red Sea oil terminal of Ras Issa for more than six years, and U.N. officials have warned it could spill four times as much oil as the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster off Alaska.

"A memorandum of understanding has been signed with the United Nations for the Safer tanker," Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, head of the Houthi supreme revolutionary committee, said in a Twitter post late on Saturday.

A deal had previously been reached for a technical U.N. team to inspect the deteriorating vessel, built in 1976, and conduct whatever repairs may be feasible, but final agreement on logistical arrangements did not materialise.

No maintenance operations have been carried out on the Safer since 2015

UN and Yemen rebels agree to transfer oil from Yemen tanker

The United Nations and Yemen’s Houthi rebels have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at resolving the environmental threat posed by a tanker carrying more than 1 million barrels of crude oil that has been moored off the coast of the war-torn Arab nation since the 1980s, the U.N. said Monday.

The FSO Safer tanker’s long-term presence in the Red Sea has raised fears of a massive oil spill or explosion that could cause an environmental catastrophe.

Under the MOU, a short-term solution would transfer the oil from the Safer to another ship, along with a longer-term solution, he said.

But the MOU, dated March 5, makes clear the proposal’s implementation is contingent on mobilizing donor funds.

The MOU was signed by David Gressly, the U.N. resident and humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, and Ibrahim Al-Seraji, chairman of the committee overseeing the agreement established by the Houthi authorities in Sanaa, as well as Abdullah Mohamed Fahem & Co.

It states that the United Nations will “make all efforts to mobilize the necessary funds” and that all signatories acknowledge that the authorities in Sanaa “bear no financial obligations” for the project. But it says the Houthi authorities “are committed to providing all facilities for the success of the project.”

The MOU states that a temporary tanker may be required to transfer the cargo from the FSO Safer and that the United Nations will provide the temporary vessel which will remain near the Safer tanker.

In the longer term, it says “the United Nations is committed to providing and supplying a replacement equivalent to the FSO Safer suitable for export with a target of 18 months.”

UN-Houthi tanker salvage deal concerns Yemen maritime experts

A long-sought deal may avert environmental disaster but rebels' free replacement vessel is worrying observers

Experts on Yemeni maritime issues have raised concerns over a recent deal between the UN and Yemen’s Houthi rebels to unload a leaky oil platform that threatens to spill its cargo into the Red Sea.

A maritime security analyst and a former UN investigator said the deal might avert environmental chaos, but it also grants the Houthis a free replacement for the FSO Safer, even though the group has reneged on past deals.

“This is a triple win for Houthis, who already sold the oil in the FSO Safer and now will save face without paying one dollar,” said Fernando Carvajal, research director at South24 and a former UN investigator.

“Whatever deal by the UN ends the potential catastrophe at Ras Isa [oil terminal] is a good deal, but keep in mind that this is potentially worse than” previous efforts to broker deals with the Houthis, Mr Carvajal said.

The UN and the Houthis on March 5 signed an agreement to unload about 1.1 million barrels of oil from the vessel, which is stranded 8 kilometres off Ras Isa port on Yemen’s Houthi-held west coast.

The agreement, a copy of which was obtained by The National, says the UN is “committed to providing and supplying a replacement equivalent to the FSO Safer suitable for export” to the rebels within 18 months.

The Houthis are to grant access to the vessel but “bear no financial obligations”, says the deal.

The timeline has yet to be established, as the UN must first raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to carry out the inevitably complicated and delicate maritime operation.

Ian Ralby, chief executive of maritime security consultancy IR Consilium, said he was “cautiously optimistic” about the deal but that “time was running out” for the UN to raise cash for an effective operation.

“The devil is definitely in the details and there's a lot that will have to be worked out in order to first implement this initial agreement,” Mr Ralby said.

The Houthis’ replacement vessel, he said, would “preserve the equity” the group has in the FSO Safer so they could carry out long-held plans to export Yemeni crude in the future.

“They see that as being the potential backbone of a future Houthi economy,” Mr Ralby said.

“This would give them the prospect of that or at least maintain that prospect indefinitely.”

https://www.thenationalnews.com/world/us-news/2022/03/08/un-houthi-tanker-salvage-deal-concerns-yemen-maritime-experts/

My comment: By a UAE news site. there should be no such considerations claiming that such a deal would be in favour of the Houthi side (i. e. government of Northern Yemen). It sounds just strange to me that the UN now should have a problem to get less than 1 Million US$ to start this operation.

Analysis - UNSC’s Yemen war addressing: deterring or fueling?

While the world is busy watching Ukrainian crisis, the UN Security Council at a Tuesday meeting voted to renew arms embargo on Yemen. The resolution, adopted with 11 affirmative votes and 4 abstentions, says all of body of Yemen's Ansarullah resistant movement will be covered by the arms sanctions. The movement has been under weapons sanctions since 2015 according to UNSC 2216 resolution, with the UN every year extending the restriction.

UNSC resolution apparently biased

The UNSC approved 13 resolutions from March 2015 to July 2021 on Yemen war, waged against the already-impoverished nation by a Saudi-led Arab coalition.

In all these resolutions, although Saudi Arabia and its ally the UAE glare as the aggressors, the UNSC not only did not condemn Riyadh and Abu Dhabi's unabated and indiscriminate attacks on the civilians, all-out siege, and occupation of parts of Yemen like ports and islands in an apparent violation of its sovereignty but also condemned the defensive measures of the Yemenis, moving in line with the aggression countries' plans.

This politicized view can be seen in several Security Council resolutions since the preliminary 2216 resolution.

Resolution 2216 explicitly condemned Ansarullah while Saudi Arabia had started the war against Yemen. One of the important points of this resolution is that without pointing to Saudi Arabia it accused Ansarullah and took a stand against it. The resolution does not even make a call for Riyadh and Abu Dhabi to stop daily bombardment of Yemeni people and infrastructure.

This resolution shaped the basis for the UNSC addressing of the war over the past 7 years. The newest version of the resolution "strongly condemns the cross-border attacks" on Saudi Arabia and the UAE by the Yemeni movement.

The UN regularly ignores reports by its own institutions like World Health Organization and children's fund UNICEF which have issued several reports so far warning that Yemen is facing a grave famine and humanitarian crisis because of ongoing Saudi and Emirati attacks. But whenever Yemeni forces tighten the noose on Riyadh and Abu Dhabi on the battleground, the UNSC rushes to help the aggression countries with meetings and resolutions against Yemen resistance.

When the UAE sent a letter to the UNSC on 18 about retaliatory attacks by Ansarullah on the Emirati cities, the UNSC issued a statement on January 23 condemning the strikes as "heinous terrorist attacks."

Actually, in Yemen case, policy and interests are apparently put before rights and the UNSC has focused on advancing the goals of one side of the war.

Security Council Adopts US-Saudi-UAE Aggressive Agenda Ignoring Yemen's Suffering

It is not Resolution 2624 alone, but rather the approach of the UN Security Council that angers the people of Yemen.

On the verge of the eighth year of the US-Saudi aggression, the Yemenis tried to deliver their message to the world. They spoke and found no one to listen. The world pretended to be blind.

The Yemeni people have no choice but to use the language of deterrence so that the Security Council can understand that it is committing grave mistakes against Yemen by its collusion with Washington to kill Yemenis.

Although Resolution 2624 “forbidding the export of arms” does not bring anything new to the besieged country, the insistence of the Security Council to be a tool that performs the requests received from the US-Saudi countries is enough to awaken the fires of hatred in the hearts of Yemenis.

The council had to abide by the tasks for which it was established to maintain security and peace among the members of the international community, but if the council were to turn into a tool in the hands of a state like the UAE, this calls for correcting the imbalance by all possible means available, including using missiles .

The Council took an important part of its precious time, as the world is busy with the Ukraine war, in order to discuss the concerns of the Emirates, without wondering, where are the arms import contracts for the Yemenis?

The Council, through its resolution, ignored the recommendations issued by the United Nations' international and regional expert group, to stop arms exports from the United States, Britain and France to Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

It also Ignored the war crimes committed against civilians in Yemen

Explained: The implications of UN's recognition of Houthis as terrorists

The terror status will hurt the Houthis from several sides as the group will now struggle to access financial, commercial and arms routes.

No peace without Houthis

Dr Elisabeth Kendall, Senior Research Fellow in Arabic & Islamic Studies, at the Pembroke College in University of Oxford, is, however, unsure about the efficacy of the UN move.

“While many acts of the Houthi leadership can be viewed as terrorist, the issue is that labelling the entire movement as terrorist is unlikely to help secure a sustainable resolution to the Yemen conflict,” she tells TRT World.

“There can be no peace settlement in Yemen without the Houthis being a part of it. This places one more stumbling block in the path of mediation efforts. Rather than sidelining Houthi hardliners, it is likely to strengthen their position.

“Other elements in the resolution that support a more inclusive political process should be welcomed.”

Kendall adds that there is a real risk that the terrorist designation will hamper the distribution of life-saving aid to those in Houthi-controlled areas who need it most, despite the resolution noting that this is not the intention.

Diplomats involved in drafting the text of Houthis’ designation as “terrorist group” and UN officials say that the term has no legal force and does not mean the entire Houthi community has been designated as a terrorist organisation.

Designating the Houthis as terrorists will serve only to confirm their existing biases, according to the Foreign Policy.

I have just read UN Security Council resolution 2624 and found it in ITSELF a serious threat to peace and stability in Yemen and the region. Besides, the resolution violates justice and equality principles between conflicting parties stated in Quran.

The resolution allows UN State Members manufacturing weapons like US to continue selling weapons to KSA & UAE but depriving Yemenis like Ansar Allah from their right to resist the aggressors by imposing an arm embargo on them.

UN estimated 377,000 civilians be killed by end of 2021, but that remains a figure for the UN just because they were killed by US weapons at the hands of Saudis. The resolution never included a word of condolence to families of victims, let alone bringing killers to justice.

Washington’s Hypocrisy In Yemen

Washington criticizes Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine but enables the UAE and Saudis to wage war in Yemen.

In response to the invasion of Ukraine, the Biden administration is leading a global campaign against Russia. Washington is making it a moral crusade, backed by a popular upsurge in America and especially Europe.

The United Nations Security Council was unable to denounce Moscow’s invasion because of a Russian veto. However, the body approved a resolution, pushed strongly by a belligerent UAE, condemning Yemeni insurgents as terrorists. The Emirates bought Moscow’s support by abstaining on the Ukraine vote.

In an almost hysterical example of hypocrisy, the U.N. body—with the backing of the Biden administration—denounced the insurgents for firing drones and missiles at Saudi Arabia and UAE after the latter two had spent more than seven years bombing Yemeni cities.

Who are the true terrorists?

Washington’s participation in what the Yemenis call the Saudi-American war demonstrates the U.S.’s systemic foreign policy problem. Three successive American administrations have backed an aggressive war, waged by ruthlessly repressive states that have killed hundreds of thousands of people, displaced millions, and left their populations suffering from malnutrition and disease. Far more people have suffered in Yemen than have suffered and are likely to suffer in Ukraine.

Were any other nation—especially an adversary like China or Russia—responsible for this hardship, Washington would be issuing denunciations of and imposing sanctions on the perpetrators. Indeed, there would be cries to haul the villains before the International Criminal Court. Washington, which doesn’t recognize the ICC’s authority, has avoided that indignity, but in September 2020 the New York Times noted the embarrassing connection between American policy and war crimes.

The Obama administration took the U.S. into the conflict without the slightest pretense that important American interests were at stake

And the coalition’s weapons come from America. Reported the New York Times

The answer is to end the war in Yemen. However, the Biden administration continues to sell weapons to the aggressor powers. It has increased direct support for the UAE, deploying ships and planes to help defend the Emirati royals when Ansar Allah shoots back.

The president’s special envoy, Tim Lenderking, is acting as consigliere for the Saudi and Emirati royals, pushing an old U.N. resolution advancing their position. Abdulghani al-Iryani of the Sanaa Center for Strategic Studies observed that the “UN council resolutions condemning [the Houthis] and demanding that they must surrender before they go into any serious peace negotiations has made it impossible for them to consider peace negotiations as an option.” In addition to supporting the UN resolution calling the Houthis terrorists, the administration is debating re-listing Ansar Allah as a terrorist organization, even though Abu Dhabi and Riyadh have conducted far more attacks on civilians.

If the U.S. wants to play moral leader in decrying Russian depredations in Ukraine, Washington should stop supporting even worse crimes by Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates in Yemen. Hypocrisy may be an inevitable aspect of any foreign policy. Aiding mass murder should not be – by Doug Bandow

Senate Democrats call on Pentagon to probe civilian casualties in Yemen

Leading US Senate Democrats Chris Murphy and Elizabeth Warren are demanding the Pentagon open new investigations into reports that dozens of civilians were killed as a result of US military operations in Yemen.

In a letter shared exclusively with Middle East Eye, the two lawmakers said the Biden administration should thoroughly investigate "credible reports of civilian harm, including those from Yemen".

Murphy, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Warren, who serves on the Armed Services Committee, said new investigations should also include site visits, interviews with witnesses, and information from sources outside the US military.

"We urge you to open new investigations into reports of civilian harm from U.S. military operations in Yemen raised by credible NGOs or external sources, to report publicly and transparently on your conclusions, and to take appropriate steps toward redress and accountability," the senators wrote in the letter dated Tuesday.

"The consequences of U.S. military operations in Yemen have been deep and long-lasting for scores of Yemeni civilians. We look forward to learning how you will work to provide transparency, accountability, and justice for those harmed."

As War Rages in Yemen, the United States Evades Responsibility

The U.S. government has condemned Putin’s war in Ukraine, but it has kept quiet about the world’s worst humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

As the war intensified, it faded from public view, even as the suffering of the Yemeni people worsened. In one of the greatest blows to public oversight, the U.N. Human Rights Council ended the mandate of a U.N. expert panel on Yemen, which had been documenting human rights violations in the country.

“This is a time to increase, not abandon, attention to Yemenis trapped in war zones,” Kathy Kelly wrote in The Progressive.

In Washington, D.C., many officials blame the Houthis for the crisis. Ned Price, a State Department spokesperson, said in January that the Houthis are the “one actor that is primarily responsible for the suffering of the Yemeni people.”

For years, U.S. officials have portrayed the Houthis as a proxy force for Iran. “You have seen us shine a bright spotlight on the level of support that Iran and Iran-backed groups are providing to the Houthis,” Price noted.

Other observers present a more nuanced view. According to Barbara Bodine, a former U.S. diplomat who is now a professor at Georgetown University, both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have been propping up a government in Yemen that “has very little legitimacy and very little capacity within the country and in fact has been marked by corruption at a rather remarkable scale.” The Houthis, she explained early last month, “are more of an indigenous player,” even if they are receiving support from Iran.

In Bodine’s view, the Houthis do not depend on Iran as much as the ousted Yemeni government depends on Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. “So you have a great imbalance,” she said.

For U.S. officials, a major concern is that a Houthi victory would make it difficult to control the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the major chokepoints in the global energy trade. Every day, oil tankers carry more than six million barrels of oil and oil-related products through the strait.

“A possible stop in commercial shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait would have a significant impact on the world economy, and it is in all our interest to prevent such a spillage or stoppage,” U.S. military spokesperson William Urban said in 2020.

The United States has played a major role in the war.

As the fighting has intensified, U.S. officials have largely kept quiet about the war. Most U.S. leaders avert their eyes from its horrors, unwilling to acknowledge that young Yemeni children are suffering terribly.

“The world can no longer stand idly by as Yemenis suffer from a lack of access to the most basic services,” U.N. official Bouzar said. “We must work together on ending the war and on ending the war now.”

Scoop: Biden advisers weigh Saudi Arabia trip for more oil

President Biden’s advisers are discussing a possible visit to Saudi Arabia this spring to help repair relations and convince the Kingdom to pump more oil, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: A hat-in-hand trip would illustrate the gravity of the global energy crisis driven by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Biden has chastised Saudi Arabia, and the CIA believes its de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was involved in the dismemberment of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

The possibility also shows how Russia's invasion is scrambling world's alliances, forcing the U.S. to reorder its priorities — and potentially recalibrating its emphasis on human rights.

Biden officials are in Venezuela this weekend to meet with the government of President Nicolás Maduro. Some Republicans and Democrats in Washington suggest Venezuela's oil could replace Russia's, according to the New York Times.

Any visit to the Persian Gulf would come amid a busy presidential travel schedule during the next few months.

Audio / Transcript: U.S. Power and Influence in the Middle East: Part One

In this first episode, Jon explores how the United States became more deeply enmeshed in the Middle East, how its role in the region has changed, and how some people think it needs to change a lot more. He talks with Ambassador Anne Patterson, a career diplomat with more than 40 years of experience in the Middle East and around the globe, most recently as assistant secretary of state for the Near East and North Africa from 2013 to 2017; Andrew Bacevich, a retired army officer, former West Point professor, and the president of the Quincy Institute; and Karim Makdisi, a professor of international relations at the American University of Beirut.

Pence tells Israeli paper: We will tear up any new nuclear deal with Iran

Why could Tehran want to sign anything now? To have a likely ’24 presidential candidate say this now is a deal killer

Former Vice President Mike Pence told an Israeli newspaper on Tuesday that a future Republican administration will tear up any new nuclear deal made with Iran today. Beyond all of the political bloviation, it is important to understand how Pence’s statement undermines the U.S. bargaining position right now in Vienna.

“If the JCPOA finds a way to be resurrected, we will be a part and a voice of a chorus of Americans with that new administration coming into office to end the JCPOA just as quickly as we ended it under the Trump-Pence administration,” he charged in Israel Hayom.

Not only would Republicans withdraw from any new agreement they would bring back President Trump’s (fundam

One of the biggest sticking points on behalf of the Iranian negotiators has been the inability to ensure that any future White House won’t waltz in and rip up the renewed agreement. So far they haven’t been able to get that kind of assurance, even from the Democrats who are supposedly behind getting a deal out the door. Now the GOP in the form of Mike Pence, one of the most high-profile likely candidates for president in 2024, is openly saying it will kill it.

So what does this do?

It means that any carrots the U.S. puts forward in the talks are devalued precisely because we are explicit about their lack of durability. Therefore, Washington has to offer more to achieve the same because of this open lack of trustworthiness.

As I have written elsewhere, this has been a major challenge throughout these nuclear talks. Being unreliable does not put you in a good position to ask for a “longer and stronger” deal.

At the same time, Pence is not lying. If the GOP wins in 2024, I see only two scenarios: either Washington walks out of the deal a la Trump, or it adopts an ambiguous position in which it doesn’t commit to staying and flirts with leaving.

In the latter case, the United States injects so much uncertainty into the situation that international businesses will begin exiting the Iranian market, whether or not any sanctions are lifted from a renewed deal. As such, uncertainty is a de facto sanction.

Not getting what it has been promised, Tehran will likely quit the deal or it will reduce its obligations, as it did from 2019 and onward. But this time around, the JCPOA would likely not be able to take that pressure without collapsing. The nuclear deal dies and with it any hope for achieving any peaceful resolution with Iran.

Naively, many in D.C. are still thinking of how to “strengthen” the deal once it is revived. But I fear that very few have internalized how weak the Western bargaining position is: One can’t ask for more when one simultaneously admits that no American promise can be kept longer than four years.

Iran nuclear diplomat flies home as pressure grows on Tehran

Iran’s top diplomat at monthslong talks aimed at restoring its tattered nuclear deal with world powers flew home late Monday for a sudden trip, a sign of the growing pressure on Tehran as the negotiations appear to be nearing their end.

Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency described Ali Bagheri Kani’s trip as being “within the framework of the usual consultations during the talks.” However, the top negotiator for the European Union seemed to suggest whether the talks succeeded or failed now rested with the Islamic Republic.

“There are no longer ‘expert level talks.’ Nor ‘formal meetings,’” Enrique Mora wrote on Twitter, responding to comments by an Iranian analyst. “It is time, in the next few days, for political decisions to end the (hashtag)ViennaTalks. The rest is noise.”

Mora’s comments mirror those of British and French negotiators at the Vienna talks

Iran seeks ‘creative ways’ to nuke deal after Russian demand

A top Iranian official said Monday that his country is seeking “creative ways” to restore its nuclear deal with world powers after Russia’s foreign minister linked sanctions on Moscow over its war on Ukraine to the ongoing negotiations.

The tweet by Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran’s powerful Supreme National Security Council, offers the first high-level acknowledgment of the demands of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“Vienna participants act & react based on interests and it’s understandable,” Shamkhani wrote. “Our interactions ... are also solely driven by our people’s interests. Thus, we’re assessing new elements that bear on the negotiations and will accordingly seek creative ways to expedite a solution.”

Shamkhani later tweeted criticism of the United States; earlier, he avoided directly mentioning Russia.

Russia: Iran, IAEA agree on 'concrete steps' to settle outstanding safeguards issues

A senior Russian diplomat has hailed as "very successful" a recent visit by Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi to Iran, saying both sides decided to take "concrete steps" to settle outstanding safeguards issues in due time.

Mikhail Ulyanov, the head of the Russian delegation to the ongoing talks between Iran and the P4+1 group of countries in the Austrian capital of Vienna, made the remarks in a post on his Twitter account on Sunday, a day after Iran and the IAEA agreed on a roadmap to resolve all outstanding issues, which could help secure the revival of the 2015 Iran deal with world powers.

Iran to answer UN nuclear questions as deal talks near end

Iran has agreed to supply answers long sought by the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, Tehran and the U.N. agency said Saturday, as talks in Vienna over its tattered atomic deal with world powers appear to be coming to an end.

A joint statement by Mohammad Eslami, the head of the civilian Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, and Rafael Mariano Grossi of the International Atomic Energy, came hours after the two met in Tehran.

It envisions the IAEA reaching conclusions on the discovery of uranium particles at former undeclared sites in Iran by June. The move is separate from the talks over the nuclear deal but could help push them to a conclusion.

But meanwhile, Russia’s foreign minister for the first time linked American sanctions on Moscow over its war on Ukraine to the ongoing Iran nuclear deal talks — adding a new wrinkle to the delicate diplomacy.

Grossi said in Tehran that “it would be difficult to believe or to imagine that such an important return to such a comprehensive agreement ... would be possible if the agency and Iran would not be seeing eye to eye on how to resolve these important safeguards issues.” Safeguards refer to the IAEA’s inspections and monitoring of a country’s nuclear program.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES CHOOSES SOLIDARITY BETWEEN OIL PRODUCERS OVER MILITARY ALLIES

“The Gulfies play the blob like a fiddle,” a U.S. intelligence official told The Intercept.

“It’s past time we dispense with the fiction that the United Arab Emirates are a reliable security partner for the United States. Between the allegations of their passing U.S.-origin weapons on to terrorist groups in Yemen to their refusal to condemn Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine, it is clear time and again that they do not share our values or our sense of security,” Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., a House Foreign Affairs Committee member, told The Intercept. “The Biden administration should have stopped the Trump F-35 and drone sales on the grounds of human rights and civilian protection in Yemen, but since they did not, I hope this gives them the push they need to halt that sale immediately,” she said, referring to an agreement former President Donald Trump inked on his final day in office to sell the UAE 50 F-35 fighter jets, drones, and other defense equipment totaling $23 billion.

A senior Democratic Senate aide, who was not authorized to speak publicly, echoed similar frustrations: “When you consider the enormous amount of support, even deference, the U.S. has shown to the UAE, their abstention is really regrettable.”

In addition to Congress, U.S. national security officials expressed dismay at the UAE’s vote. “In supporting Russia on Ukraine, the UAE is not only showing astonishing ingratitude for America’s providing Gulf security for the last 50 years,” said Robert Baer, a retired CIA officer. “And that’s not to mention all the blood Americans have shed.”

The U.S. military acts as a security guarantor for the UAE against regional adversaries like Iran and Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

The tension is unusual for the oil-rich country, whose lavish spending on public relations outfits and think tanks that hire innumerable former U.S. officials has in the past insulated it from criticism in Washington, despite its sordid human rights record, including war crimes in Yemen and jailing of activists domestically. Regarding the U.N. Security Council alone, the UAE has hired dozens of strategic communications staffers to press its interests at the United Nations, as one former senior U.S. diplomat who worked at the U.N. told The Intercept. (Foreign lobbying disclosures with the Justice Department confirm that the UAE’s United Nations mission has signed agreements with the Glover Park Group, a Washington-based communications consulting firm run by several former Democratic White House officials.) The UAE has even hired two former aides to Samantha Power, who currently heads the U.S. Agency for International Development under President Joe Biden.

Former Israeli FM Reveals Details of Hadi’s Multiple Visits to Tel Aviv

Haaretz journalist Amos Harel published on his personal website the details of his interview with Israel Katz, the former Israeli foreign minister. According to Harel, Israel, Katz revealed secret and important information about Israel’s policies in the Red Sea and its role in Yemen’s war, including the close relations between Yemeni President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi and the Israeli Mossad and his many visits to Tel Aviv

In response to an Israeli journalist’s question about the war in Yemen, Katz said: “We do not have reliable allies in Yemen. The current president of Yemen, Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi, has close relations with us, but he is not able to lead the war against the Houthis. When the war in Yemen began, the Yemeni president visited Tel Aviv with the help of Jordan and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. During this visit, we reached an understanding, but the problem is that Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi is not a brave and strong leader, so if you give him an army that is victorious, he will undoubtedly be defeated. However, we cannot close our eyes that Israel and Saudi Arabia do not have a suitable alternative to the current Yemeni president, and therefore providing support for him will remain on our agenda.

The former Israeli foreign minister declared during this interview that: the only source of concern for Israel in the Red Sea is the strengthening of Houthis in the region. This also results from the incompetence of the Saudi government

Double standard on war crimes as Yemen deaths overlooked

Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly will petition the International Criminal Court to probe alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine. Good.

Yet, Canada will not do the same for Saudi Arabia, which is waging a seven-year long airstrike offensive in Yemen, an offensive which has seen the Saudi-led coalition bomb schools and school buses, hospitals and funerals.

Canada’s double standard is likely due to its part in arming Saudi Arabia and partly because Yemeni lives don’t matter as much as those of white European ones.

Roiled by economic crisis, Sudan to float its currency

Cash-stripped Sudan on Monday announced it will float the country’s currency as economic conditions deteriorate further, some four months after a military coup plunged the African nation into further turmoil.

The Central Bank of Sudan said banks and exchange firms will determine the value of the Sudanese pound based on supply and demand. The central bank governor, Yahai Hussein Ganqoul, said there will be no interference from the central bank.

The move is likely to cause a swift increase in prices of commodities and services in response to a drop in the value of the pound.

Ganqoul said the move is part of a package of reforms that aim to stabilize the exchange rate of the pound. Local media report that the currency has been trading at around 570 Sudanese pounds to the dollar on the black market while its official rate was at just over 445 pounds to $1.

'Big threat': air defences take centre stage at Saudi arms show

Air defence systems have been front and centre at Saudi Arabia's first defence show as drone and missile attacks increase in the energy-rich Gulf.

Deadly strikes on Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates claimed by Yemeni rebels have been the talk of shows held in the two countries in recent weeks.

Six hundred companies from about 40 countries showed off the latest military technology at the World Defense Show in the Saudi capital Riyadh this week.

"There is very much high interest in the region for the capabilities to defeat drones and IEDs," said Bobby Strawbridge of US firm Allen-Vanguard, which makes equipment to block radio-controlled weaponry.

Visitors to the Riyadh show are zooming in on anti-drone and air defence systems, according to Tomas Kossowski, chief operating officer for Advanced Protection Systems.

The Polish firm sold its infrastructure-defence products to Saudi Arabia's national telecoms operator in 2019 and has since been in negotiations with other potential customers. Kossowski said interest from the Gulf in "defending critical infrastructure" was growing every month.

"There is a big threat here from the constant attacks from drones in the region," he told AFP. "The Yemen border is under constant threat and with our solutions we are able to prevent drone attacks."

Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest arms importer between 2016 and 2020, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, on Monday announced an accord with US giant Lockheed Martin to build an air defence system in the kingdom.

The General Authority for Military Industries, which oversees the Saudi defence industry, has made 22 deals with national and international enterprises worth some two billion dollars.

The deals range from the purchase of military systems to the construction of production lines and the transfer of knowledge and training.

The government wants 50 percent of its arms needs provided by Saudi manufacturers by 2030.

Saudi, Lockheed Martin in Missile Defense Deal

Saudi Arabia announced a deal Monday with US firm Lockheed Martin to manufacture elements of the missile defenses of the Gulf state, the target of frequent cross-border attacks by rebels in Yemen.

Its military industries authority, cited by state news agency SPA, approved two projects to produce launchers and other equipment used in the THAAD anti-missile defense system.

The announcement, which did not disclose the value of the deal, comes on the sidelines of an international arms show which opened Sunday in the Saudi capital.

The United States, the oil-rich kingdom’s top ally, deployed THAAD and Patriot defense systems in Saudi Arabia in October 2019 at a time of heightened tensions with Riyadh’s regional rival Tehran.

Saudi Chinook delivery on schedule, Boeing turns eyes to F-15 upgrades

A Boeing executive said the Saudis have successful used their F-15SA to “kill” cruise missiles fired by the Iranian-backed Houthi militias in Yemen, a missile defense capability that the Kingdom needs.

WORLD DEFENSE SHOW: The first delivery of CH-47 Chinook helicopters to Saudi Arabia will go on as scheduled this year, and a Boeing official tells Breaking Defense that the company is already turning its eyes to potential upgrade efforts for other platforms already operating in the Kingdom.

“The Chinooks are on schedule for delivery, and we are sure that [the Saudi Air Force] will be able to operate those in the Kingdom this year. KSA will be the 21st global operator of the Chinooks,” Rick Lemaster, Boeing’s vice president for international sales in the defense sector, told Breaking Defense at the World Defense Show in the Saudi capital of Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia signed in 2016 a $3.5-billion Foreign Military Sales agreement with the United States to procure 48 Chinooks along with support and parts. Lemaster noted that despite the COVID-19 lockdown and interruption of the supply chain Boeing was able to complete the Chinooks on schedule.

The Chinook deal is hardly the first deal between the Kingdom and America’s largest aerospace company. Saudi Arabia is one of the biggest operators of Boeing-made defense platforms in the Middle East region, with 207 F-15 SA, and 62 F-15 Eagle jet fighters in service. Those are joined by six E/RE-3A AWACS early warning aircraft and seven KC-707 aircraft.

Lemaster said that most of the Saudi F-15SA warplanes that were upgraded recently “are great aircrafts” and don’t require any upgrade. But the company sees potential elsewhere in the fleet.

US Company to ‘Localize’ Arms Production in Saudi Amid Ongoing Yemeni Reprisal

US arms company Lockheed Martin is to spend more than $1 billion towards “localizing” military manufacturing in Saudi Arabia as Yemen keeps up its reprisal against the kingdom’s 2015-present war on the impoverished country.

Ray Piselli, the company’s vice president of international business, told Asharq Business on Tuesday that the company would be working together with the Saudi General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI), the kingdom’s regulator for the military industry, and Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI), a state-owned military company, to support local Saudi industries.

A day earlier, GAMI had said it was working with Lockheed Martin to make some of the parts for its THAAD missile system, which is designed to shoot down ballistic missiles in the final stages of flight.

Saudi Arabia starts producing drones

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is working on the production of unmanned aerial vehicles locally, the managing director of Saudi military industries company said on Monday.
The company is cooperating with local partners (including the general corporation for Saudi industries) to produce the first drone fully designed by Saudis, Waleed Abu Khalid added at interview with al-Ekhbaria TV.
The drone will be produced and used by Saudi armed forces, he said, as 50% of the Kingdom's military expenditure will be nationalized by 2030.
The company is planning to establish one of the world's largest munitions plants and to nationalize all the defense sectors, the Saudi official added.
Last October, the Saudi military industries company signed a contract with the general corporation for Saudi industries to develop 'Air Guard' drone system inside the Kingdom.

Drones are re-engineering the geopolitics of the Middle East

The Middle East is experiencing a seismic shift in its geopolitics: the dawn of the era of drones. From Syria to Libya and from Yemen to Iraq, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have altered the dynamics on the battlefield. Turkey and Iran expanded low-cost, domestic UAV production, allowing Ankara and Tehran to advance their foreign policy agenda despite economic constraints. In response, Arab nations such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are rapidly developing their own UAV fleets. Non-state actors are another big winner in the drone revolution, as they gain the capability to deploy new tactics and strategies against nation-states. Agile and affordable, drones aren't just a menace to remote conflict zones, but also to states far removed from theaters of war.

The drones from Tehran

Iran ramped up UAV production for both surveillance and offensive operations. The expansion of Iran’s drone capabilities coincided with their integration into Tehran’s military strategy across the Middle East. Iran also equipped its regional proxies such as Hezbollah, the Houthis, and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) with Iranian-made drones in Syria, Yemen, and Iraq. Iranian drone designs offered the requisite know-how for Tehran's proxies to construct their own drone capabilities, which integrated Iranian designs, Chinese wiring, and commercial cameras, sensors, and engines from international manufacturers.

The response from Arab powers

With Turkish and Iranian UAV fleets undermining the strategic posture of the Arab states, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE have all been developing their own UAV fleets and anti-drone capabilities.

The UAE: A drone success story

Because of the UAE’s geographic location in the Arabian Gulf facing Iran, its battle against the Houthis in Yemen, and its involvement in Libya, Abu Dhabi has focused on building robust, dynamic military capabilities. Drawing on technological knowledge, strong finances, and growing military and security partnerships, the UAE built a vigorous drone industry that provides Abu Dhabi with regional strategic depth. In this effort, the UAE has looked to China as a reliable supplier of drone technology.

Following the signing of the Abraham Accords, the UAE and Israel are now building a tech coalition that will utilize their respective comparative advantages: Israel's leadership in drone and anti-drone technology and the UAE's financial heft and competence in scaling tech capabilities.

Saudi Arabia: Vision 2030 and geopolitics meet drones

The recent Saudi penetration into the drone industry stems from Vision 2030 and the geopolitical threats to the kingdom.

The Iranian drone attacks on the Saudi Aramco oil processing facility at Abqaiq in 2019 alerted Riyadh to the danger of drones and the immediate need to develop drone and anti-drone capabilities. Following years of geopolitical tensions with Turkey, Ankara announced that Riyadh wanted to buy Turkish armed UAVs, which had previously contributed to military victories in Syria, Libya, and Nagorno-Karabakh. Under license from Turkey's Vestel Savunma, two Saudi manufacturers, Intra Defense Technologies and Advanced Electronics Company, have begun co-producing a Turkish-made, medium-altitude, long-endurance Karayel-SU drone.

Saudi Arabia struggling to find Yemeni mercenaries for war effort

A Saudi military committee has established camps between Ma’rib and Jawf provinces for the sake of bringing back Hadi loyalist forces who had retreated from its borders.

This was reported by Yemen News Portal based on the testimonies of well-informed sources.

According to the sources, the Saudi committee is using a carrot-and-stick approach to bring back members of Hadi’s forces who were sent to Ma’rib as reinforcements due to the advances of the forces loyal to the National Salvation Government in Sana’a.

The sources confirmed that these forces refused to return due bad treatment and humiliation at the hands of Saudi officers.

Saudi Arabia has set up Yemeni forces that do not belong to Hadi’s military forces, in order to protect their border, while deploying Saudi soldiers in fallback positions in an effort to minimize their own losses on the border fronts.

Der Kampf um die eigene Identität

Seit 2015 herrscht in Jemen Krieg.

Fighting to retain a national identity

War has been raging in Yemen since 2015. Now some fear that Yemeni culture is also being hijacked by the warring parties. Whether it's coffee, particular species of bird or dragon trees, Yemenis have a lot to lose.

For some years now, Saudi Arabia has been trying to have Khawlani coffee beans entered on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. So far without success. At the end of January, the Saudi ministry of commerce announced that instead of Arabic mocha, only Saudi mocha would now be served in restaurants, cafes and supermarkets nationwide. The announcement was timed to coincide with an initiative by the Saudi ministry of culture, which has declared 2022 the "Year of Saudi Coffee". The beans are celebrated as a national treasure and a means of preserving Saudi heritage and cultural identity. Saudi coffee is also being promoted at the expo in Dubai.

"If anything, it is our common heritage. Now coffee is to be named after a single royal family, al-Saud. This cannot be," says Yousra Ishaq. Khawlani coffee actually comes from the border area between Saudi Arabia and Yemen; for centuries the ancient Khawlan bin Amir tribe lived between the Saudi city of Jizan and northwestern Yemen. The two countries share a 1300-kilometre border.

Hashtag: "No to the theft of Yemeni heritage"

Many Yemenis consider this announcement to be another border violation: after their cities, their coffee is now being hijacked. Some users posted screenshots of studies concluding that the origins of Arabic coffee culture are in Yemen. They pointed to the birthplace of coffee: arabica beans were shipped to the wider world from the Yemeni port city of Al Mocha – hence the name 'mocha'.

It's a cultural conflict that has been simmering for a long time. When the Arabic edition of National Geographic called on its readers to send in special snapshots in 2020, Yemenis were quick to point out that the images were of their cultural heritage, not Saudi.

Unique species of trees and birds have also aroused covetousness among the warring parties. On the Yemeni island of Socotra, a natural paradise in the Indian Ocean, the United Arab Emirates flag can be seen flying on many buildings. The island, which is often called the "Galapagos of the Indian Ocean", has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.

Yemenis fear the UAE's ambitious property development projects could drive away many species of birds and trees on the island. UNESCO is also alarmed and plans to send a delegation to Socotra to check the state of conservation on the World Heritage site.

As a then 24-year-old from San Francisco, Alkhansali travelled to his homeland to learn about the ancient Yemeni coffee tradition and market it in the USA.

These young people are looking to instil a little hope into the Yemen narrative, keen to show the rest of the world that things of beauty can also come out of their homeland. "I believe in the power of coffee, we want to introduce local sellers to the outside world," says Alkhansali. Salha Mattar also wants to travel, with her beloved coffee beans in her case.

Film: Yemen: Economic Damage of Smuggled Pesticides | Holm Akhdar

Smuggled and banned pesticides have affected the agricultural sector in Yemen, which is considered one of the key non-oil sectors of the Yemeni economy. According to agricultural statistics data, the areas of various crops that stopped producing during the past ten years amounted to about 344,642 hectares of cultivated lands in Yemen. Shocks and losses sustained by the agricultural sector have exacerbated by the war, climate and fuel crisis, besides many other factors, most notably, the increased use of toxic pesticides.

The Yemeni riyal on Tuesday continued its frightening decline against foreign currencies in the southern provinces, controlled by Saudi-led coalition, which portends an economic catastrophe that doubles the burdens on the Yemeni citizen.

The Yemeni riyal exchange rate reached 1,279 for one dollar and 336 riyals for the Saudi riyal in the provinces of Aden and Hadramout, in light of the inability of the coalition and the “Hadi government” to limit the collapse of the local currency.

Challenges and Prospects for Electronic Money and Payment Systems in Yemen

Yemen has a heavily cash-based economy with low levels of financial inclusion. The country’s formal banking sector is highly underdeveloped, undercapitalized and concentrated in urban areas, leaving it inaccessible for the majority of the Yemeni population. Just prior to the current conflict, the Central Bank of Yemen (CBY) began reforms aimed at developing Yemen’s financial sector infrastructure and reducing the predominance of cash by improving electronic interbank transactions and local electronic payment systems, including electronic and mobile money services. Given the widespread prevalence of mobile phones among the population, successful reform had the potential to dramatically increase financial inclusion. The onset of the ongoing conflict, however, interrupted progress.

This paper examines the existing regulations surrounding the use of e-money in Yemen, its attempts to adopt e-money services both before and during the conflict, the major players and state of infrastructure in the sector, and the challenges and prospects facing greater adoption of electronic currency in the country.

Given Yemen’s armed conflict, political crisis, deep institutional fragmentation in key state institutions – including the parliament and the CBY – and the underdeveloped state of e-payment infrastructure overall, widespread use of e-money is unlikely to emerge. During the conflict, any enforcement of aggressive unilateral steps by any of the competing parties to the conflict could deepen the division in the institutions involved in operating the e-payment services. Holistic initiatives to strengthen the Yemeni e-money and e-payment ecosystem are invariably tied to ending political division and stabilizing the monetary regime, which must start by unifying the central banks and the official exchange rate.

Until a resolution can be reached, this paper recommends that stakeholders interested in implementing e-money services in Yemen adopt a “do no harm” approach.

Report: Wanted Norwegian al-Qaida member held in Yemen

A Norwegian citizen who became a member of al-Qaida in Yemen has been arrested in Yemen by the country’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, Norwegian broadcaster NRK said Monday.

According to the report, Anders Cameroon Østensvig Dale is being held in a hospital in Sanaa. He is sought at home on suspicion of terrorism and was put on a blacklist by the United States.

Norwegian prosecutor Haris Hrenovica with the Norwegian security service PST said the suspect’s hospital detention “makes us believe that there is an injury.” It was unclear when and how he was apprehended and there was no immediate confirmation from the Houthis.

The broadcaster said Ostensvig Dale converted to Islam in 2008 and visited Yemen several times before eventually joining al-Qaida’s branch there, known as Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

Motives of Foreigners’ Kidnappings Escalation in Yemen

The frightening escalation of targeting process to foreign workers in Yemen has sparked a debate about the identity and motives of those behind these operations, and does it have anything to do with the United Nations reducing the size of its humanitarian interventions? and its efforts to drain what is left in the donors’ treasury, or by the Western American movement in the Yemeni Oil Crescent, and what is the future of international organizations in the “legitimate” areas in the south and east of the country?

where some go to blame international organizations and UN missions for a prominent role in these incidents, at least for not taking security measures to prevent more kidnappings, thus, they allude to the possibility of UN manipulation to drain the rest of Yemen’s aid by disbursing it as ransom. While organizations arranging to leave the country following the United Nations decision to reduce the proportion of humanitarian intervention, in a country that suffers from a humanitarian catastrophe due to the war and siege, which is approaching its eighth year, however, this narrative seems weaker if other dimensions are taken into account, represented by the political struggle of the “legitimacy” parties, in areas that witnessed kidnappings and parties attempt to exploit it in order to achieve field gains, as the call of STC through its official spokesman, Ali Al Kathiri, where he stressed on the necessity of carrying out a military operation for the council’s factions in those areas under the control of Hadi and Mohsen factions, and who accused them of moving the base to mix papers with the approaching to fold their page.

This view may take a dimension closer to reality, and it is like the one that talks about Al-Qaeda resorting to these operations, to pay off a financial deficit and a funding crisis that the organization suffers from, but the most important thing is the operations coincided with Al-Qaeda’s intensification to its media activity, after its websites and pages were represented by Almalahem and Alsahab, which were closed by Western intelligence, not to mention the organization’s concentration of its activity in the region extending from Abyan in southern Yemen to Hadhramaut, reaching Marib and passing through Shabwah.

These areas represent the oil crescent of Yemen, which is rich in oil and gas which the eyes of Western countries and the United States began to look to it, to reduce the size of the escalating global energy crisis due to the conflict with Russia and the attempt of Gulf states to bargain with oil in exchange for concessions, not to mention their high prices compared to the cheaper Yemeni oil and gas due to the previous regime’s agreement with transcontinental companies.

This prompted activists to link the western path with the sudden rise of Al-Qaeda, in a statement published by Al-Sahab video, Al-Qaeda admitted that he had been hacked by Western intelligence.

The kidnapping may have coincided with the organization’s announcement of killing two of its leaders in American raids in Marib and the talk of the American envoy who visited Hadhramaut and Shabwah about an American desire to return to combat terrorism in Yemen is closely related, this may seem the most realistic view, the organization has long provided cover for the movements of the United States and Western countries in southern and eastern Yemen.

Yemen arms embargo renewal may pave new path

The United Nations Security Council's decision to renew its arms embargo on Yemen and label Houthi rebels a "terrorist group" could pave a new path for negotiations, experts said, amid an increased emphasis on a political solution to the conflict in the country.

Rasha Al Joundy, research supervisor at the Dubai Public Policy Research Center, said the resolution was "not intended to complicate the humanitarian efforts in Yemen", but it presents a direct message to the Houthis that there is "an impatience in the international community" resulting from the obstruction of any mediation to end the yearslong war, and pressure will only increase if they keep adopting the same policies.

Najiya

I had warned her against going there.

Luckily though, Najiya worked in the management building’s accounting office, which was relatively far from the hangars that had been set ablaze by falling bombs.

It was a crisp, cold morning. Her body had been spared, not even a single scratch left its mark, but her spirit had been wounded. Disconcerting effects from her psychological scars suddenly afflicted her, completely in contrast with her strong, courageous personality. Whenever she heard explosions, fireworks crackling, or rumbling thunder, she would fall to the ground and take cover beneath a table or chair, or curl up in a corner and cry profusely.

In those moments, when the memory of that day returned to her, she imagined herself as a scorched corpse whose face had been disfigured, hair seared, and skin burned off. There would be nothing recognizable about her. The smell of charred flesh pervaded her nostrils, and she would find herself transported back to the past, stuck between the leveled buildings and corpses as she relived the horror of time freezing and life stopping.

280 government troops killed in northwest Yemen, report

At least 80 government troops have been killed and 200 injured in renewed battles between the forces of the internationally recognised government and Houthis in Yemen's northwestern province of Hajjah, the Arabi 21 website reported on Saturday.

The battles in the districts of Haradh and Abs resumed weeks ago. They are the fiercest since the two sides started the fight for the province on the border with Saudi Arabia years ago, with both sides suffering heavy losses, it quoted a military source as saying.

At least 750 Houthis were killed in one week earlier this month, local media outlets reported.

On Saturday, the government forces repelled a massive Houthi assault on their positions in the area of Bani Hasan in Abs, the website said.

80 Houthi militiamen killed in fighting, airstrikes in northwestern Yemen

A total of 80 members of the Houthi militia were killed in the ongoing battles with the Yemeni government forces in the country's strategic northwestern province of Hajjah, a military official told Xinhua on Monday.

"Intensified airstrikes and ferocious battles occurred during the past 72 hours in Abs and Haradh districts of Hajjah, leaving around 80 Houthi militias killed and scores others injured," the local military source said on condition of anonymity.

He said that a series of airstrikes struck Houthi military vehicles and gatherings when they were preparing to launch attacks against the government-controlled areas in Abs district of Hajjah.

Meanwhile, a source of the Yemeni government said that their forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition succeeded in thwarting several Houthi attacks against Abs and Haradh districts.

US official says Yemen rebels fire missile into busy Red Sea

Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched at least one missile into the busy waters of Red Sea over the weekend, a U.S. official said Monday, raising the risk of the rebels striking one of the many commercial vessels using a waterway crucial to global shipping.

The missile fire took place Saturday in the Red Sea, the Navy said. An American official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters, said the Houthis had conducted the launch.

“Although maritime traffic was not impacted in this instance, these actions are destabilizing and present a danger to all vessels transiting a critical international waterway,” the Navy’s Mideast-based 5th Fleet said.

My comment: Obviously, the US fleet has no business in the Red Sea. It’s 6000 miles away from the US.
