[Sanaa gov.] Officials: US-Saudi Coalition Is preparing for Upcoming Battle, New Phase of Aggression, Siege

Yemeni Officials confirmed, Saturday, that the US-Saudi aggression is preparing for a sudden upcoming battle and a new phase of aggression and siege, and it is not on the way to establish peace in Yemen.

The member of the Supreme Political Council, Muhammad Al-Nuaimi, stressed in a statement to Almasirah that the aggression is not about to prepare for a path that establishes peace in Yemen and the region. “It did not fulfill the obligations of the UN-sponsored humanitarian truce, and this matter in itself is a prelude to detonating the situation,” he explained.

Al-Nuaimi indicated that the US-Saudi aggression is preparing for a new phase of aggression and siege

[Aden gov.] Yemeni official: Gov't lacks real peace partner as Houthis misevaluate stances

The Yemeni UN-recognized government and the Houthi group will unlikely reach in the near future a political settlement that would end war and bring peace, member of the Yemeni Leadership Council (LC) said on Thursday.
Yemen's government lacks a real peace partner, Othman Mujali added at meeting in Riyadh with the Deputy Chief of Mission for the US embassy to Yemen, Cathy Westley, citing the Houthi obduracy and unwillingness to stop war.
While it made many concessions to reach diplomatic solutions that would lead to an end to the war and the Yemenis' suffering, the government was often faced by Houthi rocks shattering every UN, international and regional effort, he argued.

[Aden] Gov't chief negotiator says talks achieved nothing toward ending Houthi siege of Taiz

The government's chief negotiator with Houthis over ending the siege on Taiz city Abdulkareem Shayban made a number of a press statements today:

The road Houthis offered to open is to narrow for a 4 wheel drive to cruise through, never mind big lorries that transport food stuff.

We need an open road that the entire world knows and recognizes in the same as we opened Sana'a Airport and Hodeidah Seaport, two ports of entry that the world knows.

We are keen on the benefit of the people from the opened Sana'a Airport and Hodeidah Seaport. Those ports were opened for the benefit of the people not the Houthis, and the Taiz roads need to be opened to lift the suffering of the people.

Houthis Reject UN Proposal to Reopen Routes to Yemen's Taiz

The Iran-backed Houthi militias in Yemen have rejected a proposal by United Nations envoy Hans Grundberg regarding the reopening of routes leading to the besieged Taiz province, revealed a source to Asharq Al-Awsat.

In remarks to Asharq Al-Awsat, the source said the Houthis have turned down the proposal that was recently made by the envoy, which may have negative repercussions on the ongoing nationwide truce.

Grundberg relayed the Houthi reply to the legitimate government on Thursday, it added on condition of anonymity.

The UN had proposed reopening three roads suggested by the Houthis, one proposed by the government, and another between the governorates of Dhale and Ibb.

Yemen Houthis rejects UN proposal to reopen Taiz roads

The Houthi group officially rejects the UN proposal on reopening the roads in the Yemeni southwestern city of Taiz, Houthi senior negotiator told the UN special envoy for Yemen on Wednesday.
The Houthis adhere to their unilateral initiative the group introduced before the second round of Amman talks, Yahiya al-Rozami added in an official letter to Hans Grundberg.
The Osaifera-Sofitel road, which was proposed by the UN envoy, needs more study and will be discussed at the next common meeting, he said.
The Houthi official offered again the one-sided plan to open roads in two phases; the first would see the opening of Sala-Aba'ar-Sormain-Dimna-Hoban-Sana'a road, and Soraija-Karish-Rahida-Hoban-Sana'a road.
In the second phase, the 60meterSt.-50meterSt.-Air Defense-Nour City road would be reopened, but the Yemeni government would need to open Morais-Damt road.
After the two phases are accomplished, the two parties would study and discuss the reopening of roads in other governorates, particularly Marib-Nakhla-Jawf crossroads-Sana'a road, Rozami said.

Yemen's Houthis say they will reopen two Taez roads

Group says it has agreed to open two roads in 'first phase' of an operation

Yemen's Houthi rebels say they have agreed to reopen two roads around the city of Taez, the group's Saba news agency reported on Thursday.

The militant group said it had submitted “notes” to the UN special envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, confirming the decision to reopen the Salleh road to Sanaa and roads between Lahej and Aden.

The UN special envoy's office could not immediately be reached to confirm the claim.

Saba news, quoting an unindentified military source, said the Houthis would reopen the two roads “immediately” in the “first phase” of an operation.

“After the first phase is complete, the committees will continue UN-sponsored talks to commence the reopening of the remaining roads, according to what is agreed upon,” the Houthis said.

But a Yemeni diplomatic source told The National that the proposed roads agreed to by the Houthis will only "alleviate the suffering of the people of Taez by 10 per cent", due to their relatively small size.

UN humanitarian co-ordinator to Yemen David Gressly told The National last week that access to the roads will allow people to return home and make aid more accessible.

However, the Yemeni government and Houthis have failed to find agreement about the routes that should be reopened in Yemen.

While the government insists on reopening Taiz’s al-Hoban highway, Houthis argue that they cannot do so for security reasons.

“We believe that it is the responsibility of the Houthis, and they should implement the truce as there is a very clear humanitarian necessity,” US Envoy Tim Lenderking told Asharq Al-Awsat.

Despite Red Sea Imminent Disaster, UN Continues to Exploit Issue of Oil Tanker “Safer”

Although over two months have passed since the United Nations announced an emergency plan at a cost of $80 million to save the oil tanker “Safer” that is floating in the waters of the Red Sea and threatened with collapse, the tanker is still waiting to start the implementation of the United Nations plan.

At a time when everyone expected the United Nations to announce the start of the process of transferring oil from aboard the tank and starting the maintenance process, the Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, David Grisley, appeared to declare that the lack of funding still hinders the maintenance of the dilapidated tanker.

Grisley’s statements, according to observers, confirmed that the start of the operation of the dilapidated tanker will not take place in the near future. It coincided with a new campaign launched by the United Nations on social media to collect more donations, which amounts to 20 million dollars after the organization collected 61 million dollars over the past two months, according to Grisley's statements, which means the continued threat of an environmental disaster that could occur at any moment.

UN Is Partner in the Disaster

The tanker “Safer” reached this situation because of the United Nations’ ignoring of the appeals launched by Sana’a, from December 2016 to June 2019.

The Yemeni military condemned the Saudi Arabia-led coalition, which has entered a rare truce with the country, for breaching the sensitive agreement, warning it of the consequences of such violations.

Saudi Arabian dissidents ‘being sexually assaulted and murdered’ in prison

‘Women are subjected to sustained and brutal violations with no basic human rights,’ campaigner says

Prisoners held for opposing the government in Saudi Arabia are being murdered, sexually assaulted and inflicted with “sheer” brutality, a new report has suggested.

The study, carried out by Grant Liberty, a human rights charity, identified 311 known prisoners of conscience in the era of Mohammad Bin Salman Al Saud –the kingdom’s leader who is the current crown prince, deputy prime minister, and minister of defence.

Researchers, who shared the report exclusively with The Independent, claimed that 53 prisoners have been tortured, while six were sexually assaulted, and 14 were pushed into undergoing hunger strikes.

The report looked at the plight of 23 women’s rights activists, 11 of whom were still behind bars, as well as also identifying 54 journalists.

Some 22 of the prisoners were arrested for crimes that they carried out when they were still children – five of them were put to death. An additional 13 were facing the death penalty, while four had died in custody.

Lucy Rae, of Grant Liberty, told The Independent: “Sadly the abuse of the prisoners of conscience continues as the world watches on, women are subjected to sustained and brutal violations with no basic human rights.

Abdullah al-Ghamdi, a political and human rights activist who is the son of Ms Al-Ghamdi, said he escaped Saudi Arabia after being threatened for campaigning against authoritarian policies in the middle eastern country.

His mother, Aida, and two of his brothers were arrested after he left, he added.

“They were arrested not because they had committed a crime, but because of my activism,” Mr al-Ghamdi, whose situation is explored in the report, said

Human rights organisations say Ms Al Hathloul has been forced to endure abuse including electric shocks, flogging and sexual harassment while in jail. Loujain, who successfully campaigned to win Saudi women the right to drive, was arrested alongside 10 other women’s rights activists in Saudi Arabia in May 2018 – weeks before the country reversed the driving ban.

Mohammed bin Salman: From pariah to preferred partner?

Mohammed bin Salman is marking his fifth anniversary as Saudi Arabia's crown prince with a regional power tour. The 36-year-old is back on the international political stage thanks to oil, allies and lessons learned.

'Massive success' for Mohammed bin Salman

For the crown prince, however, this summer's meetings might lead to a new stage of his political career.

"MBS will continue to try to show strength as a regional leader," said Sons of the CARPO think tank. He is convinced the Saudi crown prince wants to be perceived as the undisputed leader in the Arab world, as well as on the international stage.

In turn, it doesn't surprise him that Mohammed bin Salman sees himself as a winner for now. "Biden comes to him, Macron was there, Boris Johnson was there. So, all the people who had massive problems with the Khashoggi case have petitioned him back into the international community," said Sons. "This is a massive success for him, and he will also exploit it for domestic political and propaganda purposes."

Meanwhile, the crown prince has sent a signal of his own to highlight that he, too, has understood how to engage in diplomatic behavior. Earlier this month, the Saudi-led OPEC+ cartel promised to increase oil production in July and August.

As the world grapples with oil shortages linked to the war in Ukraine, Biden was quick to officially welcome the gesture

MBS Secretly Planning to Grant Israelis Property Rights in Mecca, Medina: Report

Saudi crown prince Mohammad bin Salman (MBS) has been secretly pursuing plans to legalize the ownership of property by Israelis in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, a report citing Saudi sources has revealed.

According to Saudi Leaks, the unnamed sources said MBS has completely opened the door to normalization of relations with the Israeli regime by approving Israeli settlers’ ownership of property in the two cities.

Non-Saudis, other than by way of inheritance, do not have the right to ownership, easement, or benefit of real estate situated within the boundaries of Mecca and Medina, home to Islam's two holiest shrines.

Saudi prince wants Wall Street to help fund $500 billion plan for a floating Silicon Valley in the desert

Executives from the Saudi crown prince’s “Neom” megaproject have invited bankers and investors to a meeting in New York next month as they try to drum up international interest in their $500 billion plan to build a high-tech hub from scratch.

Neom’s chief executive Nadhmi Al-Nasr and finance sector head Layth Al-Shaiban are scheduled to attend the event in early April, according to people familiar with the matter. Invitations were sent to private equity firms, bankers and construction suppliers for the gathering, which aims to gauge interest in the project, one of the people said. It’s potentially one of a series of events in multiple American cities, and follows a similar event in London last year, another person said.

ESOHR Denys Saudi Arabia's Claim to Cooperate with UN Bodies, Human Rights Council

The European Saudi Organization for Human Rights (ESOHR) denied Saudi Arabia's claim to cooperate with UN bodies, especially the Human Rights Council.

The representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Geneva, Abdulaziz Al-Wasel, claimed that his country is continuing to help and support human rights.
During the discussion of the annual update of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, under the second item of the work of the 50th session of the Human Rights Council on June 15, 2022, Saudi Arabia referred to the importance of what it described as cooperation and dialogue to ensure the principles of the United Nations.
Saudi Arabia's speech comes in light of its continued violation of human rights on a large scale inside of the country, especially in its violation of international laws and covenants it has ratified, most notably the Convention against Torture and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Saudi Arabia's speech before the Council explained that countries are responsible for respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms. It also stressed the importance of communication between governments and the High Commissioner, and Al-Wasil welcomed the High Commissioner's visit to countries such as China and Afghanistan.
The European Saudi Organization considers that Saudi Arabia's claim to cooperate with UN bodies, especially the Human Rights Council, is unrealistic, as it uses these mechanisms for political promotion without truly improving human rights conditions.

Saudi crown prince visits Egypt ahead of Biden Mideast trip

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman arrived in Cairo on Monday on the first leg of a Middle East tour that comes ahead of U.S. President Joe Biden’s trip to the region next month.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi of Egypt received bin Salman at the airport, a courtesy to the de-facto leader who is a steady financial backer of the Egyptian government, according to the Egyptian presidency.

Khashoggi murder case closed by Turkish court ahead of Saudi crown prince visit

An Istanbul court closed the case into the killing of the Middle East Eye columnist five days before Mohammed bin Salman's visit to Turkey

A Turkish court closed the case into the killing of Jamal Khashoggi on 17 June, five days before Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman visited Ankara, it has emerged.

Istanbul's 11th Heavy Penal Court shut down the case on Friday, citing a set of legal reasons, according to documents seen by MEE. Saudi judicial authorities had said many of the suspects had already been tried in the kingdom.

The Istanbul court said a statement from Riyadh Criminal Court's First Joint Chamber said 10 of the 26 suspects had already been tried in the kingdom, receiving sentences of up to 20 years in prison, making the Turkish trial unnecessary.

Turkey met one of the kingdom's key demands earlier this year when it handed over the case to Saudi Arabia.

The Riyadh court, after inspecting the Turkish court dossier on the assasination, also decided that there was no fresh evidence to suggest the 11 remaining suspects should be retried.

The Riyadh court also added that the authotiries could not establish any connection between the murder and the remaining four suspects who were also part of the joint Turkish-Saudi team to investigate the murder.

The Istanbul court, in return, said it did not have the means and evidence to continue the trial under such circumstances since it could not listen to the testimony of the suspects. The court said international legal principles and precedents suggest it should drop the case, since it doesn't have sufficient probable cause to continue against the remaining suspects - who have not been found guilty in Saudi courts.

Hatice Cengiz, Khashoggi's fiancee, still has a right to appeal the decision in one of Turkey's higher court.

House Committee Continues Push to End Forever Wars

This week, the House Appropriations Committee voted to repeal the two authorizations for use of military force (AUMFs) that four presidents have used to justify more than 20 years of U.S. wars.

The committee adopted by voice vote two amendments from Rep. Barbara Lee (CA-13) to the annual defense spending bill. One would end the 2001 AUMF after eight months, which was passed in response to the 9/11 attacks. The other would immediately repeal the 2002 AUMF, which authorized force against Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq.

The Case for a New U.S.-Saudi Strategic Compact

The United States and Saudi Arabia both stand to benefit by renewing their central strategic partnership

In the new Council Special Report, The Case for a New U.S.-Saudi Strategic Compact, Eni Enrico Mattei Senior Fellow for Middle East and Africa Studies Steven A. Cook and Distinguished Fellow Martin S. Indyk give a thorough history of the special relationship between the world's foremost democracy and the Middle East's preeminent monarchy, up to the present moment. “The United States no longer needs as much Saudi oil, and Saudi Arabia has a new, young leader who does not respect the implicit rules of the partnership,” write Cook and Indyk. “This combination is shaking the foundations of the relationship and clouding its future.” They argue for a reassessment of the U.S.-Saudi relationship and envision what a renewed partnership would look like.

“Circumstances may be developing for a reconciliation between the two countries,” writes CFR President Richard Haass in the report’s foreword. “Russia’s war in Ukraine, combined with inflation at home, have contributed to a steep rise in energy prices, thus renewing attention on Saudi Arabia as one of the world’s top oil producers, and the only one to have a significant capacity to increase production quickly. At the same time, Iran is edging closer to putting into place the prerequisites of a nuclear weapons program, raising alarms in both Washington and Riyadh.”

The reconciliation proposed by Cook and Indyk would center on containing Iran’s regional ambitions, with increased security assurances from the United States in exchange for greater Saudi mediation of oil prices, de-escalation in Yemen, and further diplomatic normalization with Israel.

While a new arrangement would require both parties to swallow their pride, it is rooted in a realistic recognition of each country’s strategic priorities.

As Cook and Indyk warn, "Seventy-seven years after the original Roosevelt-Abdulaziz pact, the changing circumstances require a reassessment of the relationship’s value to each side, for if urgent action is not taken, the process of separation that is already under way is likely to accelerate, damaging the interests of both sides."

Biden intentionally insults Muhammad bin Salman before his visit to Saudi Arabia

Biden, in public statements, downplayed the upcoming meeting with bin Salman during his trip to the kingdom on July 15.

A few days ago, Biden told reporters, “I will not meet with bin Salman. I will attend an international meeting, in which the crown prince will be part, just as if other people were participating in the dialogues.”

The White House Secretary said: “Biden will meet more than ten leaders on this trip,” If Biden and bin Salman were to meet, it would be a “side event, not a pivotal one.”

The White House also issued a statement indicating that “Biden will meet with his counterparts from the region’s leaders” and that the US president “appreciates King Salman’s leadership for his invitation,” without mentioning the name of bin Salman in the statement.

Biden meet with genocidal Saudi dictator exposes hypocrisy of “democratic” foreign policy

Especially since the start of the Biden administration, the United States has attempted to portray itself as a defender of “human rights” and “democracy” against the “authoritarian” and “undemocratic” governments of Russia and China. This narrative framing, plastered across the loyal corporate media, has given cover for the United States to carry out a policy of naked aggression and to cozy up to repressive proxy governments throughout the world. All of the talk of the U.S. government as a defender of democracy is belied by the decision to meet with Muhammad bin Salman, one of the most brutal dictators currently in power.

Muhammad bin Salman’s list of atrocities is long

Biden’s turn towards Muhammad bin Salman represents the height of U.S. hypocrisy. Empty words about the United States’ supposed commitment to democracy will not feed the children of Yemen or stop the U.S.-manufactured bombs from raining on their heads. Dictators like Muhammad bin Salman should be sent to prison for their crimes against humanity, not rewarded with a personal visit from the U.S. president.

Iran orders US to pay compensation for slain nuke scientists

A court in Iran on Thursday ordered the United States government to pay over $4 billion to the families of Iranian nuclear scientists who have been killed in targeted attacks in recent years, state-run media reported.

The largely symbolic ruling underscores the escalating tensions between Iran and the West over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program, with negotiations to restore the tattered atomic accord at a standstill.

Although Tehran has blamed Israel in the past for slayings targeting Iranian nuclear scientists since a decade ago, Iran did not directly accuse its arch-foe Israel in its announcement.

These summits and visits come against the backdrop of acute Israeli anxiety about the undeclared collapse of the Vienna talks, Iran's progress towards developing nuclear weapons, and the enhanced military and missile capability of its paramilitary allies. US, Iran in tense sea incident; Tehran preps new centrifuges

A U.S. Navy warship fired a warning flare to wave off an Iranian Revolutionary Guard speedboat coming straight at it during a tense encounter in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, officials said Tuesday.

The incident on Monday involving the Guard and the Navy comes as tensions remain high over stalled negotiations over Iran’s tattered nuclear deal with world powers and as Tehran enriches uranium closer than ever to weapons-grade levels under decreasing international oversight.

Meanwhile, the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog said Iran now plans to enrich uranium through a second set of advanced centrifuges at its underground Fordo facility amid the standoff.

The Cyclone-class patrol ship USS Sirocco and Spearhead-class expeditionary fast transport USNS Choctaw County found themselves in the close encounter with three Iranian fast boats while coming through the Strait of Hormuz to enter the Persian Gulf, the Navy said.

In a video released by the Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, a high-speed Guard Boghammar is seen turning head-on toward the Sirocco. The Sirocco repeatedly blows its horn at the Boghammar, which turns away as it closes in. The flare shot can be heard, but not seen, as the Boghammar passes the Sirocco with the Iranian flag flying above it.

The Navy said the Boghammar came within 50 yards (45 meters) of the Sirocco, raising the risk of the vessels running into each other. The overall encounter lasted about an hour, the Navy said.

The Guard’s “actions did not meet international standards of professional or safe maritime behavior, increasing the risk of miscalculation and collision,” the Navy said.

Iran cuts off the last oil supply line to the US and the West

Obviously, Middle Eastern countries lack an alternative route to carry their oil to the rest of the globe, similar to what presently Iran has.

And the west would undoubtedly suffer because these western countries are heavily reliant on Middle Eastern oil supplies.

Therefore, through its blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran has effectively blocked Europe’s access to Iraq’s, Kuwait’s, and UAE’s oil. This would further stiffen Russia’s energy leverage on Europe and weaken EU’s position in Ukraine. So, it would be hardly surprising if Russia had already given tacit approval to Iran’s bold manoeuvres in the region.

Inside Ethiopia’s historic and thriving Yemeni community

Yemeni merchants arrived in the country in the 19th century and are now an integral part of society, living in harmony with Ethiopians

They are just one of many Yemeni families who have made Addis Ababa their home, and the influence of the cuisine and culture of Yemen can be felt across the city.

The arrival of the Yemenis

With a rich intertwined history and trade and travel always flowing between the two, it’s hard to pinpoint the arrival of Yemenis in Addis, especially when paperwork and regulations weren’t as stringent.

Strategically located just across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden from Africa, Yemeni merchants arrived freely in the late 19th century early 20th, crossing the Red Sea and entering through the ports of Massawa (in present day Eritrea) and Zeila (in present day Somaliland) on the east coast.

The first documented account of Yemeni arrivals was of Shaykh Said Ahmad Bu Zara from Hadramout (which at the time fell neither under the British nor the Sultanate’s rule) claiming he’d been in Addis since 1903.

There were thousands arriving then and it was an easy journey by boat, says Khaled. The traders brought with them spices and silks from India, and hides from Yemen. The Yemeni community quickly began to flourish, some became shopkeepers, sweet sellers, launderers and butchers.

Those that ventured further, into the capital, settled in the Arada neighbourhood of Addis and would pray in one another's homes before the first mosque, Masjid Anwar, was built in 1922 in nearby Mercato. There are now 140 mosques spread across the city.

Interlinked people

Today, Yemenis in Ethiopia are well accustomed to the country’s cuisine. In the early days, it was common for merchants to prepare traditional Yemeni meals using spices brought with them.

20 Companies Profiting the Most from War

Though the U.S. has ended the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, military spending will likely continue increasing. The House overwhelmingly passed a defense spending bill for $768 billion in December 2021. The bill would increase the Pentagon’s budget by $24 billion more than President Joe Biden requested and is expected to pass easily in the Senate.

Some of the main beneficiaries from this spending increase will likely be American military contractors. These companies are tasked with research and development of new arms and defense systems as well as with providing arms, munitions, vehicles, navigational systems, and more to the U.S. military. Worldwide, there are dozens of companies that sell billions of dollars each year in armaments and military services.

To determine the 20 companies profiting the most from war, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute Top 100 Arms-Producing Military Services Companies, 2020. Companies were ranked based on SIPRI’s estimates of arms and military services sales in 2020. Some Chinese companies were not considered due to lack of sufficient data. Arms and military services sales figures came from SIPRI. Revenue figures for the latest fiscal year came from financial reports and corporate press releases.

Even as the COVID-19 pandemic shook the global economy, arms sales continued to increase. The 100 largest military contractors sold $531 billion in arms and military services, a 1.3% increase compared to 2019, according to SIPRI.

Yemeni Artifacts for Sale at Auction in Germany in Systematic Looting, Bombing by US-Saudi Aggression

Seven years since the US-Saudi aggression against Yemen had started, Yemeni museums suffered the effects of the US-Saudi warplanes' crime and its mercenaries, as they have been subjected to destruction, looting and smuggling outside the country.

However, what is new in this case is what the Yemeni writer, Ali Al-Muqri, revealed in a Facebook post, a few days ago, saying that “one of the auction houses in Germany offered a Yemeni artifact for sale next month.”

Al-Muqri stated that an antique, representing a "beautiful Shebaan woman from the third century BC, is being auctioned in Germany on July 12, through Gorny & Mosch Giessener Münzhandlung Gmb", calling on those interested in Yemeni history to hurry to enter the auction.

“This is not the first time, and it will not be the last, that Yemeni antiquities are displayed in European auctions, which are smuggled from Yemen through theft and smuggling of antiquities," noting that "the process needs institutions that follow up on the sources of smuggling and theft of antiquities, to be subjected to legal accountability.

Lick of paint for Yemen's historic Sanaa as truce holds

"A large number of these buildings have been restored when the old Sanaa issued a distress call which was answered by some international donors... through the UNESCO," Nusairi said.

Anas al-Shuaibi, owner of one of the tower houses, said the challenge was that residents were getting impatient as they were struggling with rent costs elsewhere pending the restoration of their homes.

In the course of war, bricks were used to seal windows in some buildings, replacing Sanaa's unique coloured window glasses, as residents sought to protect their families from shrapnel.

Inside the houses, workers - wearing bright green vests that read "cash-for-work project" and helmets - used the brown mud to cover wooden ceilings.

"We have lively inhabited cities with their unique history, buildings, streets, planning, urban fabric, traditions, music and manuscripts," GOPHCY's Nusairi said.

"Everything in them is heritage."

Film: Yemen begins restoration of its capital

Old Sanaa is being rebuilt as part of a large-scale restoration effort led by UNESCO.

Many of its historic buildings were damaged by bombing...

Those working on them, like architect Ziad Al-Kuhlani, say their restoration is no easy feat.

“We are dealing with buildings that are between 300 and 350 years old, and each house is unique in its historical and architectural style.”

Officials say roughly 5000 buildings were damaged during the course of war - including 380 that are on the brink of collapse.

Mohammed Jumeh is the Yemen ambassador to UNESCO.

“It’s very important because during the war time, unfortunately, people are focusing on the war, even the news which comes out of Yemen are about war. Now, we need to give some hope. It’s important regarding safeguarding, protecting, renovating, the cultural sites in Yemen."

The restoration is also giving jobs to Yemenis - more than 4,000 are working on the project.

Yemen Relies Upon Arab Stance to Save the Economic Situation

Yemen faces a deep economic crisis that threatens the government's ability to maintain vital public services. The Yemeni economic productivity has been remarkably reduced to about half of its pre-conflict level. The climate events and the economic repercussions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukrainian war have much impact in addition to the big damage that hit the vital infrastructure. Amid these conditions, a delegation of Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) carried an Arab tour that included Kuwait, Egypt, and Qatar seeking for partners and donors who can aid Yemen in its complicated ordeal in addition to its Saudi and Emirati partners.

A glimpse into Yemen's economically and socially

Yemen suffers from a high inflation rates pushed by the rise in global commodity prices and the decrease of the currency value along with the Ukrainian war implications. The latter played the biggest role in the additional increase of the critical imports prices including wheat, the second-biggest imported commodity in Yemen after fuel (half of the Yemeni wheat imports come from Russia and Ukraine). At the local level, the decline of the currency value contributed to a 20-30% increase in the prices of local food products. Moreover, these dynamics have aggravated the severe food crisis. The World Food Program (WFP) expects a 6-month financing shortage of 0.7 billion dollars in Yemen to meet the necessary needs for about 13 million persons [1]. The official estimates of the food security status in Yemen have significantly worsened during the past two years. The rate of those who suffer from severe food insecurity increased from 45% of the population in 2020 to about 58% in 2022. The main reasons behind the skyrocketing prices include the rise in global food commodities, the big decline of vital food aids in the areas controlled by the Houthis, and the decreasing value of the currency in areas controlled by the internationally recognized government which led to the rise of food products [2].

Although Yemen is an oil country as the oil sector dominated the economy for about two decades, it has a limited impact on the people's welfare. Between 2005-2014, oil production was the most important element of the gross domestic product (GDP). The oil sector contributed in 75% of the total public revenues. However, the growth pushed by oil led to the expansion of the non-tradable services sector at the expense of the agricultural and industrial sectors. Thus, the Yemeni internal conditions have been quickly affected by the growing conflicts. The national poverty rate increased from 34% in 2005 to 48% in 2014. The escalation of tension between 2005-2014 led to a sharp decline in oil production [3]. This had the biggest negative impact on the GDP and reduced the government's revenues. Although the unavailability of official statistics, the World Bank indicated that the real GDP shrank by 50% over the past decade apart from 2018 when the donors' aid increased and the oil production temporarily rose after the semi-complete lockdown which began in 2015.

A series of new local and external shocks including the COVID-19 pandemic and Cholera epidemic along with the climate-related natural disasters cause several waves of recession in 2020/2021 to the extent that purchasing power, especially in South Yemen deteriorated and the consumption rate was undermined.

[Sanaa gov.] Finance Ministry: US-Saudi Aggression Used Targeting Industrial Sector in Yemen as Tool of War

Officials confirmed on Sunday that the US-Saudi aggression has targeted the industrial sector in Yemen and considered this a tool of the economic war, which negatively affected the people's standard of living.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance for the Statistics and Planning Sector, Ahmed Hajar, said in a statement to Al Masirah Network that reliance on the outside world in the manufacturing sector doubled the burdens of the economic war.

He stressed that the Saudi-led aggression focused on Yemen's dependence on imports and considered this as a tool of economic war.

Hajar stated that the economic war targeted this sector to create an economic downturn and to raise the costs of production inputs. He noted that targeting the manufacturing sector contributed to the decline in the domestic product and affected the standard of living of people.

For his part, Nazmi Abdulrahim, Director General of National Accounts in the Central Statistical Organization, explained to Al Masirah that the cumulative contraction rate in the manufacturing sector reached 55 percent at its lowest level.

Abdulrahim noted that the aggression focused on direct targeting of various industrial and production facilities, but a percentage of them were unable to regain their activity. He added that despite the severity of targeting the manufacturing sector and others, the community created alternatives and created investment movements, albeit limited.

Make no mistake: #AlQaeda endures in south #Yemen. #AQAP has not (yet) claimed this week's deadly ops in #Abyan & #Shabwa, nor *officially* any op in Shabwa since 4/2021, Abyan since 3/2022.

The Washington Outsider's Irina Tsukerman Moderates UNHRC 50th Panel: Yemen Coalition of Independent Women Exposes Houthi Abuses as Regional and Global Security Risks

Gathering on the sidelines of the 50th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the Yemen Coalition of Independent Women and its partner organizations, including The Washington Outsider, addressed the nexus between the human rights violations by the Iran-backed Houthi militias (Ansar Allah) in Yemen and the security risks to the region and the international community. At the June 17 symposium on human rights abuses in Yemen, Senior Director for Countering Extremism Dr. Hans Jacob Schindler discussed the Houthi threats to regional and global security by the use of ballistic missiles against Yemen's residential areas and displacement camps, and attacks on economic infrastructure and vital installations in Saudi Arabia and UAE.

Addressing Iran's arming, training, funding, and political support for Ansar Allah and the Houthi connections to other Iranian proxies in the region, Dr. Schindler confirmed that the Houthis had received material support and training from Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia, and that Yemen had become a testing ground for Iran and Hezbollah. Dr. Schindler asserted that the Houthis represented a real threat to international navigation in the Red Sea by transforming public ports into operational centers through which international shipping lines, commercial and humanitarian vessels were targeted, booby-trapped, and pirated.

In the June 19th seminar on Houthi violations against media freedom, Irina Tsukerman, who moderated the panel, stated that Houthis use cyberspace to raise funds and to block anti-Houthi websites, and to spy on citizens.

A chance for peace in Yemen?

we must point out that the European Union's reluctance to condemn the practices of the Houthi militias and their Iranian backers regarding their attacks on cities, arbitrary arrests, and the recruitment of children in a clear and strong manner has emboldened the militias to continue their inhumane practices.

Moreover, the Houthi militias did not commit to implementing any of the agreements they signed, including the Stockholm Agreement 2018, but rather took advantage of that agreement to expand their attack on the city of Marib, which includes nearly two million internally displaced people.

Despite that, the government made many concessions to reach a two-month truce which the Houthis violated and are continuing to violate on a daily basis.

But what is required now from the European Union countries is to pressure the Houthi militias and the Iranian authorities supporting them to comply with the terms of the truce. Foremost of which is the ending of the siege on the city of Taiz, which has the largest population of any city in Yemen.

I want to reaffirm that the Yemeni PLC and government are sincerely seeking to end the war and bring peace to Yemen, but there is a stubborn party, I would even say a party that is afraid of the consequences of peace, and that party is the Iranian-backed Houthi militia.

I call upon the European Union countries once again to seize this opportunity to pressure Iran and the Houthi militias to implement the terms of the truce agreement in full, which has been fully implemented by the government of the Republic of Yemen – by Mohamed Mustafa , [Aden gov.] ambassador of the Republic of Yemen to Belgium, Luxembourg and the EU.

Houthis planning to reduce Yemen population by wars: Social Media

The Houthi militia as its pattern of behavior indicates is planning to reduce Yemen's population by wars. The militia is now focusing on fueling new mini-wars and tribal revenges in the areas under its control where the majority of the population concentrates in order to achieve a quick reduction of the population, especially the tribe's young generations whom the militia see as a rising future threat to the militia's grip. Yemeni tribes need to be aware of the Houthi plot and pass this awareness on from one to another.

Since the Stockholm Agreement of December 13, 2018, a ceasefire has been in place for Hodeidah. There are no major offensives, but smaller battles are ongoing and both sides constantly are accusing each other of violating the ceasefire.

UN mission in Hodeida misleads int'l community: [Aden] Yemeni gov't

The UN Mission to Support the Hodeida Agreement (UNMHA) misleads the international community about the situation in Hodeida three ports, the Yemeni government said Saturday, calling for a probe committee.
UNMHA claim – that it maintains the civil nature of Hodeida, Salif and Ras Eisa ports – contradicts the reality, misleading the international community with de facto situation imposed by the Houthis, Hodeida local authorities said in a statement.
The Houthi group deliberately fired the three ports' officials and appointed loyalists in their place, according to the statement.

Comments: Houthi media trying hard lately to rewrite the narrative on the more than 1 million landmines the group has laid during the war. Here they blame recent mine casualties on the Saudi-led coalition for preventing entry of mine clearance equipment through Hudaydah.

Yeah, been seeing the first Houthi claims in awhile that mine-related deaths are from GoY/SLC mines now that that's the major source of civcas. Usually they'd say it was cluster munitions. Of course, I've only ever seen one independent report saying the GoY ever used mines.

The UN announced on Tuesday that it had intensified its patrols in the ports of Hodeidah in western Yemen, currently under Houthi control, to preserve their civilian character.

Yemen: Ship attacked off Hodeidah in Red Sea

British monitor says attack happened 63kms southwest of the port city, and security firm reports attempted boarding

A ship has been attacked off the coast of Yemen’s Hodeidah in the Red Sea, a British monitor said on Thursday.

The UK Maritime Trade Organisation (UKMTO) said the attack happened 34 nautical miles (63 km) southwest of the port city, and advised vessels transiting the area to exercise caution.

According to British maritime security company Ambrey Intelligence, the incident involved a sailing vessel that managed to escape an attempted boarding from occupants of boats and that the crew has been reported safe.

The company added that “investigations are ongoing” and that the vessel was “likely Hong Kong-flagged” but did not give further details.

How football is helping Yemenis cope with the prolonged war

Unofficial tournaments and street football are where many Yemenis are finding solace amid the continuing conflict.

Amid the brutal conflict in Yemen that has killed more than 370,000 people, Yemenis have turned to their long-running love for football to help them cope with the devastation, violence and humanitarian crisis ravaging their country.

Through unofficial football tournaments held across different villages and cities, Yemeni boys and men have been coming together to try and live a vague semblance of a normal existence.

On makeshift football fields covered with nothing but sand and rocks, amateur players display their skills to a cheering audience that come in the hundreds from near and far.

There are no seats. The crowd, ranging from 800 to 1,500, usually stands on its feet for the duration of the matches, shouting and singing to spur on their team and players.

As with many aspects of life across Yemen, the official football scene came to a sharp halt as a result of the war that broke out in 2014.

With the dire situation on hand, many Yemenis turned to football for solace, not only taking part in unofficial tournaments but also taking up street football.

According to Sami al-Handhali, a football commentator and former player for al-Ahly Taiz football team, sports infrastructure faced heavy destruction, with stadiums and sports centres targeted in attacks or converted into military bases.

While official football leagues resumed in September last year, funding to support sports clubs and athletes remains scarce, he added.

“Yemenis have arranged their own events on makeshift football pitches, which brought back excitement among the crowds and helped them deal with their plights as well as lead to discovering new talents who were then picked up by the club side as well as the national team,” al-Handhali told Al Jazeera.
