Yemen, the war that must not be forgotten

As the world focuses upon events in Ukraine and the action taken by the international community in that conflict, STEVE BISHOP highlights the current issues and tasks required to bring the war in Yemen higher up the international agenda

THE bombing of Yemen by the Saudi-led coalition has devastated infrastructure across the country.

Hospitals, clinics and vaccination centres have been among the targets. The blockade imposed by the coalition has resulted in widespread starvation and prevented hospitals from getting essential medical supplies.

Such supplies would be vital at any time but have exacerbated the issues faced by the people of Yemen during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The forces of Saudi Arabia, along with those of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), invaded Yemen in March 2015 to reverse the popular uprising led by Houthi rebels.

The Saudis’ main war aim has been to reinstate the puppet leader, the unelected president Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, to power.

The British government has supported the coalition with billions of pounds of arms sales. Anti-arms trade groups across Europe have also highlighted the role played by a number of other European countries in sustaining the war in Yemen.

However, over half of the combat aircraft used for bombing raids by the Saudis are supplied by Britain. There can be little doubt that these weapons have been used in the attacks upon civilian targets, and researchers on the ground in Yemen have retrieved material which backs this up.

Occupied Yemeni island could host part of US-led missile defense system

Critics say the proposal is hypocritical given Washington’s opposition to taking territory through force in places like Ukraine.

As Yemen’s civil war raged, the United Arab Emirates arrived on Socotra in 2015 and, despite protests from nearly all warring factions, have slowly expanded their influence since. Today, calls to the island are made using the UAE’s country code, and tourists fly from Abu Dhabi without a Yemeni visa — a situation that some argue amounts to annexation.

The Emiratis have also established a military presence on Socotra. And, according to a recent article in Breaking Defense, they are considering expanding that presence by putting missile defense sensors on the island, which would support a nascent, U.S.-led alliance made up of Israel and several Arab states.

Critics of this proposal worry that increased militarization of Socotra would entrench Abu Dhabi’s influence in the archipelago and damage its local wildlife, much of which cannot be found anywhere else. They also argue that U.S. endorsement of such a move would contradict the position that it is illegal to take territory in war, a stance that underpins the West’s response to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.

“It just makes any work that [U.S. officials] do about Ukraine seem not honest and not true,” said Aisha Jumaan of the Yemen Relief and Reconstruction Foundation. “Whatever reasons that they are saying in response to the Russian aggression against Ukraine just seems one-sided.”

Jumaan contends that this contradictory stance led to the international split over how to deal with the war in Ukraine. “A lot of countries in the world actually are not supporting the U.S. position because they see that the U.S. picks and chooses the causes that it wants to support,” she said.

Abu Dhabi first began to militarize Socotra around 2018, when it established a military base on the island. The move came with the imprimatur of the Southern Transitional Council, a UAE-backed faction that seeks independence for South Yemen.

This policy also earned implicit support from the United States. Unlike Yemen’s internationally recognized government, Washington has never condemned Abu Dhabi’s presence on the island, and the U.S. continues to sell billions of dollars worth of weapons to the UAE.

And concerns about the proposed missile sensors go beyond international law. Experts worry the growing military alignment could inflame tensions with Iran and damage chances for diplomacy between Tehran and its Arab counterparts

Some also wonder whether the placement makes strategic sense when it comes to countering Iranian missiles.

But what is clear is that Abu Dhabi has significant influence over the archipelago and little interest in changing that anytime soon. Highlighting this influence, Jumaan pointed to a recent tweet from Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, a prominent Emirati academic considered close to the UAE’s rulers. “Good morning from Socotra,” Abdulla wrote under a picture of him in flip flops on a beach. “Some of the wonderful people I’ve talked to here hope [the island] becomes the eighth emirate of the UAE.”

“It’s just so blatant,” Jumaan said. “Without the U.S. this would not be possible.” – by Connor Echols

What the UAE takeover of Yemen’s islands really means

Far from withdrawing from the war in Yemen, the Emirates is pursuing a hard-line and establishing itself as a military power for the long haul.

Although the United Arab Emirates militarily withdrew from Yemen in 2019, it never truly left. To this day, the UAE remains a major influence in the impoverished country, and now it is exploiting Yemen’s vulnerabilities by establishing a hold in Mayun Island and UNESCO protected Socotra Island. This encroachment threatens to lengthen the devastating conflict in Yemen.

Currently, a military base is being built on Yemen’s Mayun Island — a volcanic island off Yemen situated in a maritime choke point for crucial energy shipments and commercial cargo. The island itself can provide a base for any operation into the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and East Africa. Furthermore, it is easy to launch airstrikes into mainland Yemen from the island. The construction of the base violates Yemen’s sovereignty as the U.N.-recognized Yemeni government was not informed about the construction. While no country has claimed the air base, there are clear links to the UAE.

The UAE is also in control of Socotra Island. While Socotra is technically under the rule of the Southern Transitional Council — separatists who call for an independent South Yemen — the UAE is in de facto control.

UAE military bases and other influences are dramatically changing the rhythms of everyday life in Socotra. The 60,000 inhabitants have lived on the island for thousands of years with limited contact with the outside world, if any.

Now, the UAE is funding major infrastructure projects on the island. These include docks, hospitals, and communication networks that link Socotris to the UAE — not Yemen. It is conducting its own census and inviting influential Socotris to Abu Dhabi for free healthcare and special work permits. There are even rumors that the UAE is planning to hold a referendum on seceding from the mainland and officially becoming part of the Emirates.

The UAE is also bringing tourists to the island without the permission of the U.N.-recognized Yemeni government.

Tourists from the Gulf and Israel arrive weekly on two-hour flights from Abu Dhabi. Meanwhile, Yemeni citizens are denied access to the island by the UAE.

This is especially worrying as Socotra is one of the most biodiversity rich islands in the world.

Multiple international organizations have expressed concerns over the UAE’s actions in Socotra and its harmful effects on the population and environment.

As Farea al-Muslimi, a non-resident fellow at Chatham House, notes: “The UAE has surprised everyone, even themselves, with how well they’ve done militarily in Yemen. They have almost had free rein as a result to control and have presence in whatever they want in the country, including Yemen’s ports, which is a prize for them.” But Socotra is not a prize. It is a rich ecosystem with an indigenous population. The prime location of the island has created a unique culture influenced by the Middle East, Africa, and India. Socotris value their heritage and environment, which are now both under threat.

Not only is Socotra under threat, but the entirety of Yemen. Through building military bases both in Socotra and Mayun Island, the UAE is aggressively pursuing a hard-line stance in Yemen. It is establishing itself as a military power for the long haul.

Despite the UAE’s belligerent actions in Yemen, the Biden administration decided to resume a $23 billion arms sales deal with the country. This is disastrous given the UAE’s continued involvement in the war within mainland Yemen, but also its military infringement on Yemen’s islands that threaten to prolong the war.

The UAE has proven itself to be a hostile actor within Yemen. The more Yemeni land it controls, the larger impediment it poses to peace efforts within the country. The international community cannot allow the UAE to build illegal military bases on Yemeni land, especially at the cost of local ways of life and environmental degradation. Socotra is a UNESCO world heritage site— not Dubai 2.0 – by Arwa Mokdad

UAE Seeking Control, Crimes Continue Against Socotra Island's People, Yemen

The Abu Dhabi regime, with the help of its main ally in the US-Saudi aggression against Yemen, is proceeding to extend its control over the archipelago of Socotra Island, as the UAE began implementing new measures in a series of multiple attempts to fully control the island.

The series of Emirati moves and steps aimed at changing the demographic and geographical map of the island have raised Yemenis' fears that this will lead to the imposition of a different reality on the island, nullifying being Yemeni.

Media sources confirmed to the "Yemen Press Agency, that the UAE, during the past two days, carried out a wide registration process for the people of the Yemeni island of Socotra for recruitment into the Emirati police, on the condition that he leaves the island with his family."

On May 22, the Yemeni newspaper Al-Thawra quoted local residents of the island that the UAE is heading to change the identity of the island and limit the presence of Yemenis there, in a systematic manner.

The UAE sends foreign workers from Bengal to the island of Socotra under the guise of reconstruction.

The sources revealed that the Saudi forces are the ones who are practically supervising the displacement of the island's residents in light of the influx of hundreds of Emirati families to the archipelago.

According to the sources, the Saudi forces are the ones who are supervising the departure of hundreds of Socotri families to the Saudi city of Dammam, where the photos obtained by the “Yemen Press Agency” showed Saudi soldiers known for their arrogance in the process of tying the bags of the island’s departing residents and loading them to planes, with the aim of showing their alleged interest Socotra citizen.

The sources confirmed that the Abu Dhabi government provides every Emirati citizen with sums of money amounting to 100,000 dirhams, provided that he stays for a period of time in Socotra.

According to the sources, the UAE made tempting offers to European media and photographers present in the Emirates to travel to Socotra in order to promote the island's tourism and convey the picturesque landmarks of the island.

They added that the UAE had asked the media to confirm that the Island had become an Emirati.

Socotra archipelago witnesses uprising against UAE presence

The Yemeni Socotra archipelago province witnessed on Wednesday an uprising by the island’s sheikhs against the UAE and its militias, denouncing the UAE’s attempts to humiliate them.

This came at the inauguration ceremony of the Emirati honor for the sheikhs, which turned into a massive demonstration of the sheikhs and the sons of Socotra calling for the departure of the UAE and its militias from Socotra.

Local residents said that the sheikhs and dignitaries of the Socotra archipelago gathered in front of the Diwan of Sultan Ali bin Afrar, threatening to close it after a series of insults practiced by the UAE against the sheikhs and sons of Socotra, taking advantage of the poverty in the country as a result of the war and siege.

The residents added that the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) deliberately looted the rights of the sheikhs, humiliated them and belittled them in front of their tribes.

Sources: Establishing a new UAE-Israeli military base in Socotra

A new batch of UAE military reinforcements arrived in the Yemeni Socotra archipelago province, Southern media sources reported on Sunday.

According to the sources, an Emirati air force plane landed at Hadibo Airport, carrying with Emirati officers accompanied by Israeli soldiers, on the second flight of its kind in days.

The sources added that the majority of the officers arriving were engineers of military construction and their visit was part of arrangements for the development of an Emirati-Israeli base in the city of Hadibo.

Yemen’s top AFP surveillance officer on what the indicators tell us

As Yemen’s national surveillance coordinator, Dr Ahmed leads the country’s acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance efforts, the primary means of tracking poliovirus transmission. With an explosive outbreak of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 having paralysed 115 children and counting, and with swathes of the country’s infrastructure – from roads to hospitals – decimated by conflict, you’d be forgiven for thinking that his and his team’s efforts to surveil for poliovirus were falling short or otherwise compromised. But you’d be wrong.

In Yemen, despite a long-running conflict and complex humanitarian disaster that has significantly impacted health care, AFP surveillance indicators tell a promising story of a functioning system where case detection, sample collection and laboratory analysis – the steps that enable us to detect poliovirus so we can respond to it – are, in fact, on track.

Surveillance data allows the polio programme to identify new AFP cases and to test those cases to determine whether polio infection is the cause. In this way, a robust and wide-reaching AFP surveillance system enables health workers to detect the presence and circulation of poliovirus.

“In addition to our work building the engagement and knowledge of pediatricians and clinicians, we are reaching the community and community-based health care providers including traditional healers. We also appeal to families for their support in reporting cases. The more aware they are of the symptoms of paralysis in a child, the quicker our surveillance coordinators can collect the stool sample for analysis,” said Dr Ahmed.

Early detection of symptoms such as AFP is a crucial step in the chain of polio surveillance.

Official in [Sanaa] Salvation Gov’t talks about rapprochement between Sanaa, Saudi Arabia

Deputy Foreign Minister in the Sanaa government, Hussein Al-Ezzi, on Saturday spoke about a rapprochement between the Sanaa government and Saudi Arabia, regarding disrupting the secession project adopted by the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council.

Al-Ezzi warned the separatists of a scheme targeting 90% of their elements, saying in a tweet on the Twitter platform, “90% of the dead in the upcoming battles will be from the separatist regions.”

He added, “We are not happy with that, of course, but it will mean that things are going according to plan, and this in the strategic range is not bad because it will exhaust separatist and narrow rural trends.”

Concluding his tweet, Al-Ezzi said: “Sometimes I feel that we and the Kingdom are still close on this point.”

Deputy Foreign Minister in the Sanaa government, Hussein Al-Ezzi, on Saturday confirmed that the presence of the Islah Party and “Tariq Afash” in the southern provinces within the so-called “presidential council” formed by Saudi Arabia, impedes the secession project.

“We bless the presence and activity of Tariq Afash and the Islah Party in the south of the country, and we consider this a very positive and effective contribution to impeding the secession project,” Al-Ezzi said in a tweet on Twitter. “The continuation of this contribution and this activity is the only reason that may intercede for them with us in the future.”

Jambiyas and henna: War does not stop Yemeni preparations for Eid

A uneasy truce has brought relative quiet to Yemen, but people are still struggling to afford their Eid traditions.

Outside Bab al-Yaman, the historic entrance to the Old City of Sanaa, there are no signs of war.

Markets are packed with people from inside and outside the capital buying gifts for the upcoming Eid al-Adha holiday, such as ceremonial daggers and henna, and sheep to be sacrificed.

Eid al-Adha, the most important Muslim religious festival, begins on Friday evening.

Abdul-Raqeeb al-Samey was buying a dagger, known as a jambiya and worn by Yemeni men as part of their traditional clothing, for his 14-year-old son Mohammed.

“Yemenis have worn a jambiya during Eid since the time of our great-grandparents,” al-Samey, who works as a plumber, explained to Al Jazeera.

Sanaa locals prepare for Eid Al-Adha overshadowed by lack of liquidity

Lack of liquidity amid holding UN truce has prevented some families from offering sheep as sacrifice, but they were able to afford Jambiyas for sons and henna for girls.

"Lambs for sacrifice are cheap this year, but I can't afford it for lack of liquidity, so I will barely be able to afford one kilo of veal," Al-Dailami, the father of two boys and three girls, told Al Mayadeen English.

Al-Dailami said this Eid is "special in many ways" because of the truce.

"We feel stability; there is no bombardment killing dozens of innocent children and women every day," he added, pointing out that this Eid is better although there are still restrictions on Al-Hudaydah port and Sanaa airport.

On July 6, the UN special envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg announced that "in view of the upcoming Eid celebrations, the parties’ focal points in the military coordination committee agreed to consolidate their commitment to the current truce through a continued halt of all offensive ground, aerial, and maritime military operations, inside and outside of Yemen, and freezing current military positions on the ground."

Yemen: United Nations must intervene to stop the targeting of journalists and media workers

Targeting of journalists is part of a widespread and systematic assault on the right to free expression and access to information in Yemen.

Amid Yemen’s brutal conflict, ongoing since 2014, seven human rights organizations, including the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS), issued an urgent appeal to the United Nations Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council to urgently act on behalf of journalists and media workers targeted and arbitrarily detained by the Ansar Allah (Houthi) group; several journalists have been sentenced to death. The targeting of journalists is part of a widespread and systematic assault on the right to free expression in Yemen, including an intent to prevent access to information about the country’s humanitarian and political situation.

The organizations called on the United Nations to immediately intervene in the interests of ensuring the release of all arbitrarily detained persons in Yemen, including journalists, and called on all parties to the conflict to stop targeting journalists.

Yemenis hope to import wheat from India as food runs low - minister

A Yemeni delegation will visit India next week in a bid to secure wheat for the war-ravaged country where strategic food stockpiles are running out, a government minister said on Thursday.

Mohammed al Ashwal, the trade and industry minister of Yemen's Saudi-backed government, told Reuters the delegation would seek to finalise an agreement to import wheat from India.

Yemen's exisiting strategic food stock piles would last until the end of August, he said.

India in May banned wheat exports as its output fell and domestic prices surged. It has since issued exemptions for certain countries.

"There has been great progress in implementing the agreement with the Indian government regarding lifting the ban on wheat exports to Yemen," Ashwal said.

It was not immediately clear how much wheat Yemen was seeking from India or how soon it could be delivered, if a deal was reached.

Why Yemen Is Seeking Aid From India To Help Fight Its Food Crisis

India is expected to reach a deal with Yemen this week to bolster the war-torn country's dwindling wheat supply. According to Reuters, Yemen, which has been embroiled in a civil war between the Saudi Arabian-backed government coalition and an Iranian-backed Houthi rebellion for seven years, has only enough strategic food stockpiles left in its silos to last through August and has been suffering inflation due to the rapidly increasing price of wheat around the world.

With a wheat influx from India and a truce currently in effect between the warring factions (via the UN), the people of Yemen may get some temporary relief. However, if the war in eastern Europe continues, the world may have many more food struggles on the horizon, with the AP reporting estimates of 181 million people at risk of hunger by the end of the year.

Al-Houthi: Reconstruction of Yemen will cost more than two trillion dollars

Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, member of the Supreme Political Council in Sana’a, has announced the cost of rebuilding what was destroyed by the Saudi-led coalition during eight-year aggression war.

“The reconstruction of Yemen will cost more than two trillion dollars,” Al-Houthi said in a tweet

https://en.ypagency.net/266028/ = https://hodhodyemennews.net/en_US/2022/07/07/reconstruction-of-yemen-after-saudi-invasion-will-cost-over-two-trillion-dollars/

My comment: This figure certainly is exaggerated. A few years ago, a more realistic estimate was at US$ 200 billion. Anyway, there had been more destruction since, so that US$ 400 billion might-be more realistic. Might-be Al-Houthi claimed this figure, as just now Ukraine had claimed that rebuilding the damages of the Ukraine war would cost US$ 750 billion. Althouth this war just lasts 3,5 months now. The Ukrainian figure obviously is very exaggerated too – but the “West” seriously discusses how to lewt Russia pay for this. Well, dear West, pay your own Yemen bill first. And the Iraq and Libya bills as well.

Is Yemen on the road to peace?

A breakthrough on the specific issue of Taiz would go a long way to boosting trust, says Veena Ali-Khan, a Yemen specialist at International Crisis Group. But without that, she says, both sides may quickly decide that “going back to fighting is the best possible outcome.” The deadlocked battle for the vital, oil-rich province of Ma’arib — currently under tenuous government control — could quickly flare again.

Even with the truce, the humanitarian situation is dire.

The facts of the case are well known. They have been brought to the world’s attention by the UN humanitarian mission in Yemen and covered in an exposé in The New Yorker magazine. In short summary, they are as follows: …

This appeal may be the simplest Crisis Group has ever made. It is not about conflict parties putting aside deep differences and agreeing to painful compromises at the negotiating table. Rather, it is about governments and others digging into their budgets to allocate $20 million to this effort – an amount that is almost negligible for most Western stakeholders given the far greater outlays for other concerns as well as the scale of the looming disaster.

Sanaa reveals talks with Netherlands on replacement of “SAFER” floating reservoir

The Deputy Foreign Minister in the Sanaa government, Hussein Al-Ezzi, on Wednesday revealed a four-day visit by the Dutch ambassador, Peter Dirk Hof, to the capital, Sanaa.

In a tweet on his Twitter account, Al-Ezzi referred to talks with the Dutch ambassador regarding the replacement of the SAFER floating tank during the latter’s visit to Sanaa.

Al-Ezzi said that he discussed with the Dutch ambassador the executive plan to replace the floating tank “SAFER” with a new, similar and equivalent tank, and reviewed the efforts of the resident coordinator in mobilizing donors to implement the plan.

The Deputy Foreign Minister expressed his thanks to the friendly Kingdom of the Netherlands and the efforts of its ambassador, praising the efforts of the United Nations Resident Coordinator and all donors.

The Safer Reservoir Maintenance Implementation Committee in Sanaa announced yesterday, Tuesday, a new agreement with the United Nations regarding the reservoir, in a meeting with the UN Humanitarian Coordinator, David Gressly.

According to the committee, the United Nations will send the operational plan for the process of replacing the SAFER ship and transferring crude oil from it to the alternative ship, with a mention of the options and methods available to install the alternative ship.

The Sanaa committee considered this step a strong impetus to move forward to solve the SAFER problem.

It was agreed to provide alternative permanent vessel for Safer floating reservoir: SRMAC

The [Sanaa gov.] Supervisory Committee for the Implementation of the Urgent Maintenance Agreement and the Comprehensive Assessment of the Safer Floating Reservoir indicated that the meeting was held Tuesday in the capital Sana'a with the Resident Representative of the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen William David Grassley, in the presence of the Dutch Ambassador and engineers from SMIT Salvage Company.
Safer Reservoir Maintenance Agreement Committee (SRMAC) in a statement issued, that during the meeting, it was agreed to implement what was stated in the memorandum of understanding signed last March, which is to provide a permanent replacement ship for the dilapidated Safer floating tank due to the coalition’s prevention of entry to diesel for operating the engines, which caused the suspension of all ship systems, especially the ship’s system. Inert gas also caused the ship's crew to be withdrawn and maintenance work stopped.
It noted that the United Nations would send the operational plan for the replacement of Safer vessel and the transfer of crude oil from Safer floating tank to the replacement vessel, mentioning the options and methods available for the installation of the replacement vessel. Consider this step a powerful push to move forward in solving the problem of Safer tank.
The Committee commended Grassley's efforts to make the process a success. Expressing the United Nations will fulfill its obligations and not repeat what has happened in previous debates.

Red Cross: Yemeni Mothers, Babies Facing ‘Unimaginable Horror'

Red Cross official Basheer Omar told RT that the humanitarian situation in Yemen is one of “unimaginable horror”, with two thirds of the population deprived of basic healthcare, calling on the international community not to leave the Yemeni people “alone facing their fate".

With the armed conflict in Yemen in its eighth year, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) released a report this week stating that around 66% of Yemen’s 30.5 million people lack access to basic healthcare, and those in need of medical attention often risk death to visit the 51% of healthcare facilities still operating in the country.

The crisis has been most acutely felt by women and infants. Less than 50% of births in Yemen are attended by healthcare professionals, and one mother and six newborn babies die every two hours, the report read. Of the estimated 4.2 million people displaced in Yemen since the outbreak of the war in 2015, 73% are women and children.

“It’s just unimaginable horror,” Omar told RT, adding, “We are doing our best to draw the attention of the international community to the plight of the Yemeni people. We’re saying that the world should not turn a blind eye to what is happening.”

“The Yemeni people should not be left alone facing their fate,” Omar, who authored the ICRC’s report, continued.

Yemen: As global food insecurity crisis escalates, hope shrinks for millions already suffering from extreme hunger

As we face an unprecedented global hunger crisis, concerns for the 16.2 million people who have long been food insecure in Yemen are at an all-time high. While the crisis in Yemen is one of the most dire, brought on by protracted conflict, droughts, and floods intensified by the climate crisis, COVID-19, and other diseases, it has failed to attract adequate support from donors for years. Now it risks slipping further into oblivion.

IFRC Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Dr. Hossam Elsharkawi, made a field visit to Sanaa, Aden, Amran, and Lahj this week, where he witnessed first-hand the immense unmet needs for nutritional supplements and medicine, and the many cases of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

“I’m extremely heartbroken at the devastating level of hunger and severe malnutrition of babies, children, and women in Yemen,” he said. “As I looked in the eyes of those suffering mothers and children, I was at a loss for words This is plain wrong and unnecessary suffering for innocent civilians.”

There are already massive gaps in funding the humanitarian response for the 20.7 million people in need of assistance in Yemen, including clean water and healthcare as well as food and nutrition. Now, as the conflict in Ukraine pushes up the prices of food, fertilizer and fuel, the situation is likely to worsen. Meanwhile, the rapidly increasing needs of people around the world will also spread humanitarian resources even thinner.

Currently, the IFRC delegation in Yemen provides financial, material, and technical support to the Yemen Red Crescent (YRCS) in Disaster Preparedness and Management, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Health, and National Society Development.

FAO seeks to raise $50 million to tackle famine in Yemen

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has said that it is seeking this year to collect $50 million to implement its activities to confront food insecurity in Yemen.

In Yemen, millions face starvation due to severe funding gaps, global inflation and the spillover effect of the war in Ukraine.

The FAO office in Yemen said in a statement that the organization seeks to reach 1.5 million affected people in Yemen during 2022, in addition to helping them rebuild and restore agricultural productivity and create livelihood opportunities in the face of ever-increasing food and nutrition insecurity.

FAO Exploits Food Insecurity in Yemen, Raises $50 Million to Squander

Exploiting the situation in Yemen, humanitarian organizations in Yemen are sending ships that are laden with tons of food that is unfit for human consumption, disregarding the suffering of Yemeni people. Since 2015, Yemen Standardization, Metrology and Quality Control Organization in Hodeidah has rejected 24 shipments belonging to the World Food Program.

Almasirah channel received a number of reports revealing another type of the US-Saudi-Emirati aggression on Yemen and its committed crimes against Yemenis. Since November 2018, nearly six ships with tons of rotten, damaged, expired flour have been returned.

The United Nations World Food Program has great disregard of the Yemeni humanitarian suffering. It exceeded the use of poor storage and distribution of expired products to sending ships loaded with tons of rotten and expired flour that is unfit for human consumption. These are some of the evidence of the World Food Program exploitation for the sufferings of the Yemenis and their human tragedies, which is no less horrifying than what the war machine does.

Yemen: Women and girls struggle to access essential healthcare

Eight years into the armed conflict in Yemen, violence, economic hardship and deteriorating health services and health infrastructure increasingly keep women and girls from being able to access the essential healthcare they need. As funding shortages force humanitarian organizations to scale down aid, their predicament will only increase.

In Yemen today, less than 50% of births are attended by skilled health professionals, according to UNICEF. One mother and six newborns die reportedly every two hours in Yemen because of complications during pregnancy and for causes that are almost entirely preventable, mainly due to limited or no access to health services.

Among the estimated 4.2 million people displaced in Yemen since the beginning of the conflict, 73% are women and children. Displaced women and girls suffer from additional economic and social vulnerability resulting in limited access to basic services, including to adequate healthcare to treat chronic disease.

More than 20.1 million people out of a total population of 30.5 million currently lack access to basic health care. Only 51% of health facilities still function across the country. Violence further complicates the ability of patients to reach lifesaving healthcare.

“Women who lost husbands over years of conflict became hesitant to travel to seek health support, especially if they live in rural areas, as they fear getting attacked or harassed on their way,” said Nabiha Ahmad, supervisor of the main public dialysis center in Aden, which is supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross. “During the past years, many of our female patients suffering from kidney failure, particularly those living in remote areas, died in their homes because they couldn’t reach the center in time for their live saving periodic treatment.’’

Film: Poor Yemenis can't afford to buy sheep for Eid Adha holiday

People in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden are struggling to afford animals to sacrifice due to their high prices ahead of Eid al-Adha, or the feast of sacrifice which falls next Saturday. Many sacrificial animals are sold at prices ranging from US$150 to $300, ahead of the Eid festival, when Muslims will sacrifice sheep, goats, camels or calves to distribute meat to family, friends and the poor. Citizens said the Muslim festival is no longer a source of joy in Aden, where Price hikes, delayed salary payments, and devaluation of the local currency, cause the absence of Eid manifestations. The seven-year war has devastated Yemen’s economy, exacerbating an urgent humanitarian crisis with millions of Yemenis on the brink of starvation.

Yemeni livestock farmers hit by falling demand ahead of Eid al-Adha

After months of feeding, shepherding, and taking care of their livestock, the Yemeni farmers discovered that selling their herds ahead of the upcoming Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of the Sacrifice, was the biggest challenge in the war-ravaged country.

For Yemenis, securing a feast on Eid al-Adha is getting increasingly difficult, if not impossible, given that the majority of the people are living in deep poverty and are only a few steps away from famine.

The livestock farmers, who already have to deal with soaring prices of fodders and a severe fuel shortage, are under additional strains as a result of the shrinking demand brought on by widespread poverty.

Moreover, the civil war and the chaos and division it causes have made it difficult for livestock or grain to circulate in the poor Arab country (photos)

Yemen - High levels of food insecurity and reduced rations (DG ECHO, IPC, WFP, media)

The food security situation in Yemen continues to deteriorate. There is an increase of 18% in the number of people acutely food insecure since 2021, reaching a total of 19 million people. Of these, 7.3 million are facing emergency levels of hunger. Up to 161,000 people are expected to face famine-like conditions during the second half of 2022.

The Internationally Recognised Government warned last week that Yemen’s wheat stock is set to run out by mid-July. Yemen is 90% dependent on imports for its domestic food needs, while 46% of its wheat imports used to come from Russia and Ukraine.

Amidst the deteriorating situation, World Food Programme (WFP) continues to face a critical funding gap.

Displacement Drops during the Yemeni Truce

Displacement rates dropped over half during the UN-sponsored ceasefire in Yemen, according to the Executive Unit for the IDPs Camps Management.

According to data, 1,700 families were displaced in recent months, compared to 4,211 families during the first months of this year.

However, the data indicated that displacement rates dropped significantly during the first two months of the truce and doubled during the first extension last June.

Between Jan 1 and June 30, the Executive Unit tracked 32,807 individuals displaced internally from 21 different governorates and distributed across 11 governorates.

About 38 percent of these IDP households left for Marib, and 40 percent were displaced to Ad-Dali, Shabwah, and Taiz, while 22 percent arrived at the governorates of Hodeidah, Abyan, Aden, al-Mahrah, and Hadramawt.

However, displacement rates increased during the first extension of the truce, according to the Unit’s Director Najeeb al-Saadi.

Saadi confirmed to Asharq Al-Awsat that 479 families were displaced in April, 446 families in May, and 806 families were displaced during June.

DTM flow Monitoring Registry Dashboard: Non-Yemeni migrant arrivals and Yemeni returnees in June 2022

In June 2022, IOM Yemen DTM recorded 3,174 migrants entering Yemen, similar to 3,228 in May 2022. In both Shabwah and Lahj DTM has registered a decrease in arrivals since February 2022 although a slight increase has been observed in Shabwah this June compared to May. The overall decrease is in part linked to seasonal weather conditions as well as an increase in border patrols from the Djibouti side, especially near Lahj meaning smaller boats with fewer migrants made their way to Yemen. The slight increase in Shabwah can be attributed to the urgent need to send as much as possible of migrants from Bosasso, Somalia to Shabwah, Yemen because the windy season is approaching and it will be difficult for migrants to travel at that period.

Due to the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Yemen and the challenges in moving towards KSA, many migrants opted to return to the Horn of Africa. Moreover, DTM recorded 5,895 Yemeni returns from KSA during the month of June 2022, compared to 5,440 in May 2022. Between 1 January and 30 June 2022, DTM recorded 31,266 migrants and 35,285 Yemeni migrant returnees to Yemen.

The migrant caseload was around 88 per cent Ethiopian nationals, and around 12 per cent Somali nationals. The migrants are predominantly male (63%), with (21%) women, eight per cent boys and eight per cent girls also among the travelers.

Through June’s reporting period, 2,091 migrants arrived from Somalia and were recorded at Ber Ali flow monitoring point in Shabwah governorate. In Lahj governorate, 1,083 migrants arrived from Djibouti, wherein 374 were recorded at Al Cawhah flow monitoring point (FMP), 304 at Al Batin FMP, 225 at Al Azaf FMP, 68 at Al Karoob FMP, 50 at Hasy Eisa FMP and 15 at Al Cawhah FMP.

Sayyed Abdulmalik: Saudi Regime Obstructs Hajj, Allowing Only Very Limited Number of Muslims

The Leader of the Revolution, Sayyed Abdulmalik Al-Houthi, congratulated the Islamic nation, the pilgrims and the dear Yemeni people on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha.

In a statement, Friday evening, Sayyed Abdulmalik explained that Hajj comes as one of the pillars of Islam and the Saudi regime practices policies that hinder its performance.

Pointing out that the Saudi regime blackmails pilgrims with burdensome financial costs until Hajj has become a difficult trip, Sayyed said that “the Saudi regime obstructs Hajj by allowing only very limited numbers of Muslims”.

He indicated that the Saudi regime prevents some Muslims from performing Hajj due to their political position against it or the US and Israeli enemy.

The Leader of the Revolution pointed out that the very high costs of Hajj are unjustified, much more than non-religious tourism in Saudi Arabia. "It is clear that the Saudi regime facilitates arrival of those coming to Saudi Arabia to attend immoral parties," he added.

Saudi Arabia, UAE Race to Militarily Control Ma'ashiq Presidential Palace, Aden

Local sources in the city of Aden reported the arrival of large military reinforcements to the city. The sources said that the forces that arrived in Aden, Tuesday, consist of military vehicles and vehicles for transporting soldiers.

The sources stated that the recent reinforcements are Saudi-backed ones, aiming to protect the residence of Al-Alimi government in the Ma’ashiq Palace and to secure the movements of members of the Presidential Council and the government in Aden.

However, some considered sending new reinforcements to Aden as an indication of the turbulence of the situation among the components of the coalition, especially since these reinforcements come less than 24 hours after the arrival of military reinforcements to the city of Aden belonging to the military factions loyal to the UAE.

Some believe that it is unreasonable that the competition to send military reinforcements to the city of Aden, under the pretext of “protecting the Ma’ashiq Palace and securing the presidential and government,” erupts suddenly.

Yemeni forces gear up to crush Al-Qaeda resurgence in south

Yemeni forces are gearing up for a full-scale offensive against Al-Qaeda in the fractured country’s south amid reports that the militant group is remobilising.

The governorates of Abyan and Shabwa have witnessed preparations from Yemen’s internationally recognised military, which is planning to expel Al-Qaeda militants who have for years led an insurgency and based themselves in the area.

Abdul Rahman Al-Shonini, commander of counterterrorism forces in Abyan, was quoted by Arab News as saying the campaign was launched after receiving information that Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) was gathering in remote valleys and mountains to launch attacks against government troops in the south.

He said elite counterterrorism troops have been deployed in mountains and valleys in Abyan, which lies east of Yemen’s de-facto capital Aden.

Yemen Unity: A Dream Turned into a Nightmare

Why do people of South Yemen reject the unity with North?

After the aggressive war of 1994, the regime of North Yemen ruled South by iron fist. Southerners in their homeland were treated as "strangers" or "refugees". Over 100,000 Southern civil servants and military officers, were sacked from their positions in the state institutions and replaced by northerners, among the southerners who were sent home by Sanaa's regime pilots, highly qualified engineers, high-ranking military commanders, some of them resorted to working in groceries, or as taxi drivers while some others fared even worse.

Determination and Resolution

Amid the tireless efforts being exerted by the UN and the international community to end the conflict in Yemen through a comprehensive political process, recognizing the right of the people of South Yemen in self-determination remains a major step towards ending the conflict in Yemen. After three decades of struggle, people in South Yemen seem more determined to snatch up their independence from North Yemen.

"The whole world know that South Yemen was an independent sovereign state and had its seat in the UN and the other international organizations" Mohammed Al-Amodi a Southern journalist based in Aden told South24.

"We have the right to determine our political status and build our own independent state in line with resolutions of the UN General Assembly and the international covenant on Civil and Political rights and in line with Security Council resolutions 924-931 issued in 1994 which rejected the aggressive war launched by the Northern partner against our people in South." Al-Amodi added
