STC bans its military, security commanders from traveling to Saudi Arabia

The UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), banned on Thursday its military and security commanders to leave for Saudi Arabia at an official invitation.

This was reported by Yemen News Portal, based on testimonies of well—informed sources.

According to the Sources in Abyan, Aidaroos Al-Zubaidi instructed the Director of Security and the commanders of the brigades present in Shabwa and Abyan not to leave until further notice.

Saudi Arabia had invited the brigades’ commanders stationed in Abyan and Shabwa for rearrangement after the departure of Islah factions.

Through the upcoming arrangements, Saudi Arabia is seeking to rebalance Islah and STC in southern Yemen.

The STC’s rejection of the Saudi invitation comes at a time when its militia continues to impose a fait accompli through appointments that ensure its dominance over those brigades, especially those affiliated with the Islah.

Mahra brigades send fiery message, tribal sheikhs warn STC

The governor of Mahra province, appointed by the Saudi-led coalition, Mohammed Ali Yasser, on Sunday sent a strong message in response to threats of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC)’s militia to take control of the province.

STC activists on social media considered the governor’s visit to the command of the “Al-Ghaydah axis” and the “military police” camp, during which he reviewed the combat readiness, as a message of war against the threats made by the STC militia to seize control of the province, under the pretext of fighting terrorism and the rebellious elements of the Islah Party.

During his visit, Yasser directed the axis’s gunmen and the “military police” in Al-Ghaydah to back the security services and raise readiness to carry out the tasks assigned to them.

On the other hand, the sheikhs of Mahra tribes stood before the STC’s threats to spread security chaos through the elements it sent from Al-Dhalea and Yafa’, stressing the unity of the ranks among the people of Mahra, and standing up seriously to face the security challenges in the province, which is far from confrontations.

The sheikhs called on the tribesmen not to allow the sabotage elements to compromise their security and to transfer chaos from Aden, Shabwa and Abyan provinces to Mahra, warning against any follies committed by the militia and the STC followers in the province, located on the border with the Sultanate of Oman.

UN-sponsored Truce in Yemen Is Under Threat!

While the indications of a return to military confrontation between Sanaa and the Saudi-Emirati alliance rise, the United Nations and European Union countries intensified their diplomatic efforts to save the truce from collapse.

However, the series of meetings led by the head of the European Union delegation, Gabriel Munoaira Viñales, and ambassadors and diplomatic representatives of 17 European countries, to the pro-aggression government, during the past days, did not come out with positive results that would revive the peace process.

The head of the Saudi-UAE Council of agents, Rashad Al-Alimi, ignored the European delegation’s demands regarding the detention of fuel ships and preventing their access to the port of Hodeidah, focusing only on the recent military parade of the Armed Forces.

Al-Alimi considered the review of Sanaa missiles and naval mines as a threat to the security of the Red Sea and international navigation. He did not show any willingness to push the peace path forward, but rather talked about the three peace references represented in the Gulf Initiative and the “Peace and Partnership Agreement” signed between the Yemeni parties in late 2014, and International Resolution 2216, which legitimized the aggression against Yemen and placed the country under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.

In an interview with Al-Akhbar newspaper, Yemeni political sources said that Al-Alimi's reply "is an escape from the implementation of the entitlements of the truce, and an indication that the Saudi-Emirati aggression coalition wants to return to the option of war” as the official "Saba" agency loyal to Riyadh, reported that the meeting has nothing to do with peace.

UN Official Accuses Houthis of Talibanisation

Authorities in northern Yemen have been accused of Talibanisation by a senior UN refugee agency (UNHCR) official, following repressive restrictions on Yemeni female aid workers.
"I call it the 'Talibanisation' of northern Yemen and that's an issue to really watch out for," Maya Ameratunga, who heads the UNHCR office in Yemen's city of Sanaa, told EUobserver on Friday (9 September).

The Houthis must stop testing Yemen's ceasefire

From arms parades to deadly attacks, the past two weeks have seen a number of destabilising moves by the group

Both sides must remember that a longer ceasefire is in their interests. Taming the Houthis will be the biggest challenge going forward in this endeavour. They are violent, ideological and fall under the influence of Iran, with a government that is willing to use dangerous foreign proxies to get what it wants.

In recent days there have been a number of incidents that demonstrate the multifaceted threat the Houthis still pose, even during the current relative lull in violence.

Some of it is designed to exert pressure and test the limits of the goodwill of both their domestic opponents and the international community. Last week, the group drew significant global condemnation over a military parade in the key port city of Hodeidah.

Others are outright acts of violence. That same week a Houthi attack killed 10 pro-government soldiers just outside the besieged city of Taez.

Maintaining pressure on the group is key, and to some extent this is still being done.

HOW TO MAKE YEMEN’S TRUCE LAST

Achieving a comprehensive settlement, however, remains a challenge. The continued siege of Taiz and recent fighting among nominally allied forces illustrate some of the difficulties that diplomats will face. To help transform the current ceasefire into a lasting peace, the U.N. and U.S. Special Envoys to Yemen should first continue to press for a truce extension. They should also keep public pressure on the Houthis to end ceasefire violations and continue trying to lift restrictions on travel both within the country and with the outside world.

The Truce Is Still Tenuous

Despite these accomplishments, the truce is not guaranteed to last. Violations have continued

In this context, diplomats have struggled to get the conflicting parties to move towards more comprehensive peace negotiations.

The truce is an agreement between the internationally recognized government and Saudi Arabia on one side and the Houthis on the other. But the war in Yemen is far more complicated than a two-sided conflict. Recent fighting in Shabwa between forces associated with the Islah party and the United Arab Emirates-backed Giants Brigades and Shabwa Defense Forces has once again exposed tensions among groups that are nominally aligned with the internationally recognized government.

What Can the International Community Do?

Diplomats got straight back to work after the August 2 announcement of the latest truce extension. In his most recent briefing to the U.N. Security Council last week, Grundberg laid out a plan for an expanded truce.

One key problem is that the United States and international community have little leverage over the Houthis to ensure that they stay active in negotiations. Yet this is not insurmountable. For one thing, the truce has created a momentum of its own. The truce has now become the norm, and both parties are likely to suffer repercussions if they step away. In this light, it is encouraging that the Houthis ultimately agreed to the most recent truce extension even after aggressively signaling that they would not.

The U.N. Special Envoy can continue to play a critical role in smoothing out disputes over implementation, which have been the downfall of past Yemen ceasefires.

Some on the internationally recognized government’s side worry that they have already made too many concessions, and that the Houthis are simply using the truce period to regroup and redeploy. Their concern is that the international community will simply ink a deal and walk away from Yemen altogether, allowing the Houthis to become the de facto authority. Here, the United States does have more leverage, and it can offer both pressure and assurance to keep the Presidential Leadership Council engaged in truce negotiations.

The U.S. Special Envoy’s Office, which is backing the U.N.-led process, and the U.N. Special Envoy have their work cut out for them. Ending a war will be a slow, painstaking process that requires a long-term investment in diplomacy. And even if the truce holds, the war in Yemen will not be over. A deeply fragmented state will have to be repaired or reimagined. Political negotiations will need to be expanded to bring in the voices of Yemeni women and civil society. The United States and the international community should resist the urge to pivot away from Yemen to the next international crisis. Rather, the United States should remain engaged over the long term and continue to support a process that is led by Yemenis themselves. As Grundberg said in his briefing for the U.N. Security Council this week, “We need to end the conflict, not merely manage it.” Embracing the envoy’s proposal for an expanded truce extension by October 2, when the latest extension expires, would be a good start.

A Saudi woman recently handed a 45-year prison sentence was convicted of using Twitter to “challenge the religion and justice” of Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), the kingdom’s 37-year-old de facto ruler, according to a court document.

Responding to Iran’s Influence? A Comparative Account of Saudi Foreign Policy Behavior towards Bahrain and Yemen since 2011

In this research project, I will shed light on Bahrain and Yemen. More precisely, I will scrutinize the foreign policy behaviour of Saudi Arabia in these two cases, starting in early 2011. The year 2011 is significant because it marks the beginning of popular uprisings across the Arab world, soon to be referred to as the “Arab Spring”. Bahrain and Yemen represent two cases in which an uprising against the ruling regime led to two different outcomes: Repression (Bahrain) and war (Yemen). In both cases, Saudi Arabia, along with other Gulf states, intervened in a neighboring country to support allied governments fighting their opposition (or a rebel movement, as in Yemen).

Bahrain and Yemen are both countries with significant Shiʿa populations, amplifying Saudi fears of growing Iranian influence in these communities. Based on the evidence of Iranian involvement in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq, I assume that Iran has played a role in Bahrain and Yemen, too. The extent to which Saudi policies in these two cases have been informed by Iran’s influence will be at the center of this study’s inquiry [paywalled]

U.S. military is developing plans to open a new testing facility in Saudi Arabia

The facility would test new technologies to combat drones, and comes amid increasing security cooperation between Arab states and Israel against Iran.

The U.S. military command responsible for the Middle East and Iran is developing plans to open a new military testing facility in Saudi Arabia, according to three U.S. defense officials familiar with the plans.

The facility will test new technologies to combat the growing threat from unmanned drones, and it will develop and test integrated air and missile defense capabilities. Early planning by Central Command, or CENTCOM, includes calling the facility the Red Sands Integrated Experimentation Center, drawing a parallel to the White Sands Missile Range, the U.S. military testing facility for extended-range missiles in New Mexico.

While the location has not yet been finalized, the officials said Saudi Arabia makes the most sense because it has large open spaces owned by the government and the ability to test various methods of electronic warfare, like signal-jamming and directed energy, without interfering with nearby population centers.

Lawmakers Press Biden to Track U.S. Aid Tied to Civilian Harm in Yemen

Democrats and Republicans want the administration to do more to ensure that American military aid to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates does not contribute to civilian casualties.

A bipartisan group of senators on Wednesday urged the Biden administration to do more to ensure that U.S. military support to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates does not contribute to civilian harm in Yemen, following an internal watchdog report that said the United States has failed to assess how its aid is tied to such casualties.

The report, released publicly in June, after The New York Times disclosed its existence, found that while the Pentagon oversaw $54.6 billion of military aid to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates from 2015 to 2021, top security officials failed to collect sufficient data and evidence on civilian casualties or monitor the use of American-made weapons.

In a pair of letters to the State Department and Pentagon, Senators Elizabeth Warren, Democrat of Massachusetts, Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, and Mike Lee, Republican of Utah, called the administration’s inaction to determine the extent to which U.S. military support has led to civilian harm in Yemen “an unacceptable failure.”

“We urge you to review whether or not the Saudi and Emirati governments are taking the necessary precautions to prevent harm to civilians in Yemen,” the senators wrote.

Lizz Truss’ appaling track record on UK arms exports cause for alarm

The UK’s new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, reinstated arms sales to Saudi Arabia in 2020 despite evidence of war crimes in Yemen.

Since the bombing of Yemen began in March 2015, the value of UK arms sales to the Saudi-led coalition amounts to at least £23 billion.

Campaign Against Arms Trade and activists call on Liz Truss and her government to stop arming the Saudi-led coalition and support accountability for war crimes, at Downing Street yesterday.

Liz Truss was Secretary of State for International Trade leading on military and security exports from 2019 – 2021. During this period CAAT took the government to court over UK arms exports to the Saudi-led Coalition. Whilst the Court of Appeal found in CAAT’s favour, in July 2020, Liz Truss issued a written statement saying the government had completed the review ordered by the Court of Appeal, and had determined that any violations of international law were “isolated incidents”. This was issued despite there being evidence of hundreds of cases where the Saudi-led coalition had targeted schools, funerals and homes. In the time since Liz Truss made this statement, the government has approved licences worth £2.2 billion as well as 46 open licences, of unlimited value, to the Coalition.

The UK is on the wrong side of history: urgent action is needed to end this deadly conflict.

Saudi arms sales: UK government accused of 'delay tactics' over files

Department of International Trade tells MEE it needs more time to decide if release of documents is in public interest

The UK Department of International Trade (DIT) has been accused of using "delaying tactics" after twice telling Middle East Eye it needs more time to decide whether releasing information about British weapons sales to Saudi Arabia is in the public interest.

Campaigners argue that the information should be released because members of the public should know how government decisions to sell arms to the Gulf kingdom at the height of its war in Yemen were made.

Middle East Eye filed a freedom of information request in July seeking correspondence between the department and ministers about arms exports to Saudi Arabia between 1 and 15 October 2016, at a time when the Saudi-led coalition's conduct of the war was under scrutiny over a deadly air strike on a crowded funeral hall in Sanaa.

More than 140 people died and over 500 were injured in the bombing on 8 October 2016, an attack that UN monitors found had violated international humanitarian law.

The department's Information Rights Unit has confirmed that it holds material that fits MEE's request, but said this week that it needed 30 days to decide whether releasing the information was in the public's interest.

This is the second time the unit has extended its deadline and comes as OpenDemocracy revealed that DIT was "the second most prolific" government department to use the "public interest loophole" in 2021.

Sam Perlo-Freeman, research coordinator with the UK-based Campaign Against Arms Trade which has challenged UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia in the high court, said the department appears to be using "classic delaying tactics".

"The UK continued to approve arms export licences to Saudi Arabia in the wake of some of the most horrific Saudi coalition attacks on Yemeni civilians," Perlo-Freeman said.

"It is important for the public to know - what concerns, if any, were raised by civil servants about these licences? How did ministers, including [then-Foreign Secretary] Boris Johnson, respond to these concerns? Did these atrocities make any difference to their thinking?"

UK fund to Saudi Arabia drops women's rights from description

Rights advocates say without more details about what the Gulf Strategy Fund backs, they fear UK complicit in human rights abuses in kingdom

Women's rights were removed from a description of what a UK government fund supports in Saudi Arabia, a week after the kingdom sentenced a Leeds University PhD candidate and mother to 34 years in prison over her tweets.

Campaigners said the lack of clarity over what the Gulf Strategy Fund (GSF) does support in Saudi Arabia, at a time when the human rights situation there is deteriorating, raises questions about whether the UK is bolstering institutions that carry out abuses.

The GSF, which has so far given £70m ($80m) to six Gulf states, has been criticised by MPs and rights groups for leaving the public largely in the dark about how it is run and taxpayer money is spent.

German company supplies Saudi Arabia with advanced weapons despite arms embargo

An investigation published by a German magazine revealed that Saudi Arabia was able to acquire new weapons through a German company.

According to Der Spiegel magazine’s investigation, it concerned about radar systems installed in the border area with Yemen, as well as various weapons and military vehicles.

The documents revealed that the German federal government owns about a quarter of the company that exported the weapons, noting that it began through contacts between the Saudi government and the German company “ Hensoldt”, where a number of deals were monitored between it and Riyadh, some of which were done secretly.

The documents, obtained by the magazine, indicated that the company has equipped the Saudi special forces with modern vehicles, as well as surveillance technology and radars for minesweepers and border guards.

The German company offered the Saudi intelligence service a system to counter drones.

The magazine wondered how a German company could be so active in its trade with Riyadh, despite the of ban on the export of weapons to the country since 2018 due to the use of German weapons by Saudi Arabia in the aggression on Yemen.

Zionist Entity Announces Its Fears Again from Yemen, Ansarullah

Israeli Channel 24 said that the Zionist entity expects to launch missiles from Yemen in case it started a war with the Lebanese Hezbollah, indicating the possibility of Ansarullah’s fighters to confront it militarily.

The channel quoted security sources as saying, “The real danger that Israel faces lies in Yemen, noting that the targeting of Tel Aviv by Ansarullah has become a reality.”

According to a “Zionist” security official, the Zionist entity does not rule out the possibility of a military confrontation with the Lebanese Hezbollah during the coming period for the demarcation of the maritime border between Lebanon and Tel Aviv.

The Israeli statements about the possibility of attacking them from Yemen represent an early and explicit declaration of war this time. It is an affirmation that the Zionist entity is seeking to tighten its control over the water ports in the Red Sea, which is one of the most important commercial crossings in the world.

War Atrocities in Yemen Linked to US Weapons

Columbia Law School researchers have unveiled a disturbing connection between American arms and civilian deaths.

But a joint investigation by the Security Force Monitor — a project of Columbia Law School’s Human Rights Institute — and the Washington Post recently concluded that a “substantial portion” of airstrikes that have killed civilians in Yemen have been carried out by jets developed, sold, and maintained by US companies and flown by US-trained pilots. The researchers, led by Columbia’s Tony Wilson, made the discovery by analyzing thousands of publicly available news stories, photographs, and videos about the Yemen war along with US military contracts. This enabled them to show that particular Saudi, Emirati, Kuwaiti, and Bahraini fighter squadrons that have flown sorties over the country are heavily reliant on US equipment and training. (The Security Force Monitor was founded in 2016 to conduct research that increases the accountability of police, military, and security forces around the world.)

Wilson and Priyanka Motaparthy ’09LAW, a Columbia Law School associate research scholar who contributed to the research, published an essay about the investigation in the online publication Just Security on June 4, the same day the Post ran its story. They expressed hope that their revelations will put pressure on the US government to more thoroughly scrutinize its support for foreign militaries.

“It is high time for the United States to finally spend the time and resources to review whether coalition squadrons that benefitted from U.S. military contracts conducted attacks in Yemen that may constitute war crimes — and to disclose their findings to Congress and the public,” they write. “A continued failure to do so would ensure that the United States remains complicit in ongoing — and perhaps future — serious human rights abuses in a war that has claimed countless lives, with no accountability.”

List Of Arms Supplied To Yemen’s Houthi Rebels By Iran Since 2015

Most of the ships containing Iranian-supplied arms and equipment intended for the Houthis list Somalia as their ultimate destination. When arriving in the Arabian or Red Sea, the arms and equipment are transferred to smaller vessels that take care of the delivery to Yemen's coast. Deliveries to Somalia and then onward to Yemen and overland deliveries through Oman make up the rest of the arms transfers. Iranian experts are also believed to have played a pivotal role in the conversion and reactivation of a number of weapons systems inside Yemen, and setting up production lines for the production of components used in Iranian-delivered armament such as drones.

This list only includes Iranian-supplied arms and equipment supplied to Houthi militants in Yemen or interdicted on the way to Yemen after the 2015 Saudi Arabian-led intervention in Yemen. This list does not include ammunition, weapons sights or items such as cables or specific components of missiles or drones. The part within apostrophes refers to the designation given by Houthis to foreign-delivered equipment.

Will Saudi Arabia buy Bayraktar drones?

Türkiye's unprecedented drone success propelled by Baykar Tech is only set to increase after the effective use and popularity of the Bayraktar TB2 during the 2022 Russo-Ukrainian War. [1] One of the countries that has recently shown an interest in Baykar's products is Saudi Arabia, which already operates a sizeable fleet of Chinese and Turkish unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs). [2] Although this fleet is sometimes reported to consist of hundreds of locally-manufactured Chinese UCAVs, the actual composition and size of Saudi Arabia's drone fleet is largely unknown. What is known is that the country's UCAVs have been deployed intensively against Houthi rebels in neighbouring Yemen since 2018. [3]

Unable to procure armed drones from the United States, Saudi Arabia has mostly relied on China for the purchase of UCAVs. This has manifested in the acquisition of significant numbers of Wing Loong I, Wing Loong II and CH-4Bs from the mid-to-late 2010s onwards. These supplemented several types of South African, Italian and German-made reconnaissance UAVs already in action over Yemen since start of the Saudi Arabian-led intervention in the country

Activists accuse Yemeni ambassador of being involved in selling 60 gold masterpieces

Yemeni activists on Thursday accused a Yemeni ambassador of being involved in a large-scale operation of selling Yemen’s antiquities abroad.

This comes on the heels of the sale of about 60 gold masterpieces at auctions without inaction.

A Yemeni activist and researcher specialised in tracing looted and stolen Yemeni antiquities, Abdullah Mohsen, spotted the sale of only 60 smuggled gold artifacts at the British Timeline Auction.

The auctions were held last Tuesday in London, he added.

He also pointed out that auctions are continuing at the famous Mayfair Hotel and that the lowest Yemeni masterpiece has been sold for $ 1190.

Activists have appealed to Yemeni Ambassador of the coalition-backed government Yassin Saeed Noman in the UK, to intervene and stop selling Yemen’s antiquities cheaply, but he did nothing about it, which reflects his involvement in the operation.

Yemen Socio-Economic Update, Issue 71 - April 2022

In This Edition

Yemen’s Electricity Sector and its Economic and Social Importance

Situation Analysis of the Electricity Sector in Yemen Damages, Losses and SocioEconomic Impact of Poor Electricity Supply in Yemen

National and Int’l. Efforts to Mitigate the Electricity Crisis in Yemen

Priority Solutions to Repair the Damaged Electricity Service in Yemen and Areas for Improvement

From Intreduction

Access to electricity is critical to reducing poverty, as energy allows investments, innovations and new industries, which are engines to create jobs and achieve comprehensive growth for all as well as shared prosperity for entire economies. In other words, electricity is the main driving force for any economy, in terms of providing the necessary requirements for the full operationalization of economic, industrial, commercial, agriculture and service activities.

Nonetheless, electricity shortage in Yemen remains one of the most critical challenges to infrastructural stability, given its impacts and implications on the well - being and dynamism of any society. It also has negative impacts on the productive, industrial and farming sectors, and thereby the overall social and economic growth and development in Yemen. It poses a stumbling block to economic growth and undermines efforts designed to alleviate poverty in particular. It, too, prevents children, women and young people from utilizing key services like health, education, while it limits access to improve livelihoods.

Bearing that in mind, the importance of electricity in Yemen is paramount to achieving general objectives and goals represented by peace – building, social cohesion, reconstruction and operationalization of economic and productive sectors.

Amid Yemen’s Truce, al Qaeda Threatens to Return

Yet in the background, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has been rebuilding. An attack in southern Yemen killed 21 Yemeni soldiers on September 6, AQAP’s deadliest since August 2019. Reduced counterterrorism pressure on AQAP in recent years threatens hard-won gains in Yemen.

The US counterterrorism strategy in Yemen—the so-called “Yemen model”—relies on local partners to combat AQAP on the ground and US airstrikes to target key operatives.

Yet, as in 2015, shifts in US partners’ priorities is lifting pressure from AQAP.

The Yemeni forces that the UAE had trained and supported, drawn in part from secessionist elements and now part of Yemeni’s coalition government, shifted their attention to pursue their own local priorities.

Today, AQAP is reconstituting its capabilities and strengthening on the ground. The group could once field tactical teams, using explosive-rigged vehicles to ram through security measures at Yemeni military headquarters and then attacking with direct and indirect fire. Over the last two years, AQAP has harassed counterterrorism forces and Houthi units with small arms fire and unsophisticated improvised explosive devices. The September 6 attack represents a step-change in AQAP’s tactical capabilities, and a sign of better recruiting, training, and planning.

Even weakened, AQAP remains a threat to US national security. The group is larger than it was in 2009 and 2010 when it attacked the US.

Current trends in southern Yemen will favor AQAP. Factional infighting within the Yemeni government diverts attention from AQAP. The UAE’s shift away from Yemen has reduced its ability and willingness to prevent the forces it had trained from focusing on the ongoing power struggle in southern Yemen rather than counterterrorism. Herein lies the challenge for the US: ensuring that its partners keep the pressure on AQAP when both they and the US seek to put counterterrorism on the back burner. Now is the time to work with the various Yemeni factions to better unify the nascent coalition government and thereby keep AQAP down and out.

Yemeni officials: Militants attack security post, 27 killed

Suspected al-Qaida militants on Tuesday attacked a security post in southern Yemen, sparking clashes that killed at least 21 troops and six militants, military officials said.

The early morning attack in Ahwar, in the province of Abyan, targeted a post manned by troops from the Security Belt, a security force loyal to the secessionist Southern Transitional Council.

The separatist council is backed by the United Arab Emirates and controls much of Yemen’s south. It is at odds with the internationally recognized government.

The officials said at least 21 troops were killed in the attack and the clashes that ensures for hours. Four more troops were also wounded, they said.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media.

Among the dead troops was Yasser Nasser Shaea, a senior commander in the force fighting terror groups in Yemen, the Security Belt said in a statement.

It said six militants were killed and others were detained. It posted images showing bodies it said were the dead militants.

No group claimed responsibility for the ambush. But it bore the hallmarks of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP.

Deadly al-Qaeda attack targets Yemen’s southern separatists

Al-Qaeda fighters have killed at least 20 fighters aligned with Yemen’s southern separatists in an attack in the Abyan province, a southern military spokesman has said, adding that all attackers were killed.

The armed group fighters used rocket-propelled grenades, light and medium weapons and military vehicles in the ambush on a security checkpoint in Ahwar district, Mohammed al-Naqib, the spokesman for Southern Transitional Council (STC) forces, told the Reuters news agency on Tuesday.

Yemen’s main southern separatist group STC, which is backed by the United Arab Emirates, last month expanded its presence throughout the southern Abyan province in what it described as a move to combat “terrorist organisations”, singling out al-Qaeda.

In a series of tweets, the STC-dominated Security Belt said six al-Qaeda fighters were killed after the group launched a “terrorist attack” on its forces in the Ahwar district in Abyan early on Tuesday.

Al-Qaeda in Yemen Releases Video of Kidnapped UN Worker: Monitor

Al-Qaeda’s Yemen branch released a video on Saturday showing a United Nations worker who was abducted in the war-torn country more than six months ago, the SITE Intelligence Group reported.

Five UN staff members were kidnapped in Yemen’s southern province of Abyan in February while returning to the port city of Aden “after having completed a field mission," UN spokesperson Eri Kaneko told AFP at the time.

In Saturday’s video message, apparently recorded on August 9, Akam Sofyol Anam, identified by SITE as Bangladeshi, urges “the UN, the international community, the humanitarian organisations, to please come forward… and meet the demands of my captors", without outlining the demands.

He said he was facing “serious health trouble", including heart problems, and needed “immediate medical support and hospitalisation", according to SITE, which monitors extremist activity.

My remark: The Emirati view.

(A P)

A revived nuclear deal doesn’t stop Iran’s backing of Houthis in Yemen. More must be done.

History demonstrates again and again that dealing with the Islamic Republic is a complicated matter. As the world’s attention is drawn to the indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran in regard to reviving the 2015 nuclear deal, it appears that many concessions are being made to the detriment of global security, especially in the Middle East.

The international community seems indifferent to the risks of Iranian hostile behavior and intrusion through its support of Yemen’s Houthi rebels and efforts to clone another Lebanese Hezbollah in Yemen. The Iranian regime’s interest in Yemen goes beyond the country’s internal conflict. It also seeks to impose its influence on the south of the Arabian Peninsula and to tighten its control over the 2,500 km long coastal strip along the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, and Indian Ocean.

Arabs warn Biden: Do not sign the Iran deal, it will start a major war

The talk about an imminent revival of the nuclear deal between Iran and the Biden administration and other Western countries has raised serious concerns among many Arabs.

They state that they are especially worried about the billions of dollars that Iran’s mullahs will receive once the deal is done.

The Arabs say they have no doubt that the money would be used by the mullahs to promote more terrorism and violence and expand Tehran’s terrorist proxies in the Middle East, including Hezbollah, the Houthis, Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and various militias in Iraq.

Shatara described the process of national reconciliation and political tolerance in the South as a rolling snowball that is getting bigger and bigger in a fast way.
He explained that the major political milestones of the coming period made everyone feels the responsibility upon them and that is why they put the Southerners' will above the individual interests.

More than 400 civilians have been killed in Yemen due to landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other unexploded ordnance across several province since 2019, a local monitoring organisation has reported.

Ten Houthi fighters have been killed or injured in fighting with army troops in the Yemeni southwestern governorate of Taiz, spokesman for the government armed forces tweeted on Sunday.

The failed infiltration left 4 Houthi fighters killed and 2 others injured, he said.

UNMHA statement tries to please coalition: Houthi official

By its statement on Houthi military parade, the UN Mission to Support the Hodeida Agreement (UNMHA) tries to please the Saudi-led coalition, the Houthi deputy premier for defense and security affairs said Thursday.
The UNMHA statement "is just a letter to please the aggressive countries as usual," Jalal al-Rwaishan said in remarks carried by al-Masyra TV.
Earlier on Thursday, the Mission expressed deep concern at the military parade seen by the Yemeni western port city of Hodeida, dismissing the move as a breach of Hodeida Agreement.

Houthi parade in sensitive Yemen port city draws UN rebuke

Iran-backed Houthi militants paraded through Hodeida Thursday drawing a stern reminder from the United Nations to abide by a hard-won 2018 agreement to demilitarize the Red Sea port city.

The Houthi’s Al-Masirah television channel aired footage of the parade it said involved air and naval forces as well as hundreds of uniformed troops.

The parade drew a rebuke from the UN mission deployed to oversee the deal the Houthis reached with the government in Sweden four years ago to avert potentially devastating fighting for the city’s lifeline port.

The mission said it was “deeply concerned by the military parade that took place in Hodeida city today, in violation of the Hodeida agreement.”

It called on the Houthi leadership to “fully respect their obligations under the agreement, particularly as it pertains to keeping the city free of military manifestations.”

Yemen [Sanaa gov. army] Military Parade.... new victorious force

The grand military parade, which was hosted in Al-Hodeida Governorate and other provinces, represented a loud, surprising and unprecedented emergence in its size and quality of the new reality that Sanaa gradually built in the past eight years of steadfastness and preparation.
The military parade displayed new qualitative weapons and specialized military formations to show readiness to fight and win the sea and air battle.
Despite the naval and air embargo, Yemen has reached reliable capabilities in the field of defense and military power, and the construction of various operational drones and missiles is an example of these successes.
