The UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC)’s militia imposed new levies and royalties on heavy transport drivers, in exchange for entering the customs of the port of Aden, in southern Yemen.

The driver explained that the militia’s insolence in imposing levies did not precede them in taking money by force, and prevented them from entering until they pay an amount of 2000 riyals.

The abuse of drivers at customs and the port is provocative, he said, noting that drivers are forcibly dying because of what they called ” Bullying ” practiced by militia members of the STC at the customs entrance.

Through Agreements with Mercenaries, UAE Seeks Enabling Israeli Enemy Occupation of Bab Al-Mandab

During the recent period, the UAE signed a security and military cooperation agreement with the pro-aggression government. It freely plays in the southern regions and its coasts as it pleases and in accordance with its political, economic and military interests, common with American and Israeli interests.

Therefore, the task of the occupying power since the beginning of the aggression against Yemen represents the role of the American and Israeli policemen. All its activities and field actions through its forces and mercenaries, politically and militarily, are within a predetermined scheme whose essence is to enable the Israeli entity in the foreground to impose its hegemony over the south and secure its occupation of the islands, coasts, and the Bab al-Mandab Strait directly, as is the case today.

In this regard, military expert Zine El Abidine Othman says: “The agreements concluded by the Emirates with the leaders of its mercenaries, or the so-called Al-Alimi Council, led by the so-called Minister of Defense, which concluded military and security agreements, are in their nature in the course of the US-Israeli plan. These agreements come only as an attempt to legitimize the Emirati presence, and behind it the US-Israeli presence along the coasts, islands and strategic southern regions.”

The humanitarian influence of Yemen's truce

The Truce’s Humanitarian Impact

The six-month truce provided a critical moment of relief for civilians and humanitarian operations. Although hostilities between the parties did not cease completely, a significant reduction in violence led to a decline in displacement and a 60 percent decrease in civilian casualties. This alone represents a substantial humanitarian benefit.

The opening of Sana’a airport improved the ability of humanitarian NGOs to import essential food and health resources, and the cessation of hostilities enabled greater aid access to internally displaced persons (IDPs). Increased fuel imports provided little economic relief to civilians, as global fuel prices and commodity prices have risen because of the conflict in Ukraine. However, the resumption of fuel imports helped ensure stable access to essential clean water, healthcare, electricity, and transportation services.

Although the truce created greater operational space for humanitarian actors, its benefits may be exaggerated. Despite the decline in hostilities, an average of 44 civilians were killed during each month of the truce from landmines, IEDs, unexploded munitions and continued violence in key conflict areas. The positive impacts of the truce did not accrue equally across the country, and ongoing access challenges have undermined aid mobilization efforts. Throughout the truce period, humanitarian access across the country remained challenging due to bureaucratic impediments and increased violence against humanitarian staff in both Houthi- and government-controlled areas. Reporting on humanitarian access by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs indicated that the primary obstacle to humanitarian access during the truce resulted from the imposition of movement restrictions on aid workers, and nearly 90 percent of access incidents occurred in Houthi-controlled areas. Additional obstacles to humanitarian activities—such as suspension, interference in project designs, and arbitrary demands for data, documents, and reporting—were attributed to IRG authorities. Between April and June 2022, delayed or interrupted assistance affected up to 5.5 million civilians. Furthermore, despite improved security conditions, gaps in available funding for humanitarian response in Yemen limited the capacity of humanitarian actors to efficiently deploy relief services during the truce.

Southern Yemen experienced a drop-off in food assistance as the Saudi and UAE governments, traditionally responsible for the regional aid budget, ceased all contributions to humanitarian operations. A UN survey in southern Yemen revealed that many IDPs held negative impressions of the truce period, as they perceived conditions as largely unimproved. Persistent political and tribal violence and unresolved human rights and governance issues shaped divergent outcomes of the truce for civilians in the region. Continued armed clashes between Houthi and IRG forces and the resulting risk to civilians also shaped local perceptions of the benefits of the truce.

A Path Forward

While not perfect, the truce enabled a level of stabilization within Yemen and provided a glimpse of a quieter future. Substantial improvements in humanitarian conditions, however, depend on continued international support and the willingness of the parties to facilitate humanitarian access and commit to a political solution.

In the immediate term, all efforts must be made to protect vulnerable populations from resurgent hostilities and to support humanitarian response efforts.

Omani delegation leaves Sana’a with no reported progress

The Omani delegation has left the rebel-held capital Sana’a with no reported progress with regard to expanding a UN-sponsored truce that expired in early October.

The Omani mediators, who arrived in Sana’a last week, departed on Sunday after meeting with Houthi leaders, including the head of the group, Abdelmalik al-Houthi.

The Houthis demanded that salaries of public servants be paid across the country and oil revenues be shared with them.

Spokesperson and chief negotiator for the Houthi group Mohammed Abdulsalam threatened that drone attacks on oil terminals and ports in areas under the internationally recognized government if their demands aren’t met.

Mohammed Abdulsalam, a chief negotiator for the Houthis, said: “Our troops on the ground have imposed new rules of engagement, and the other side should realize that we have entered a new phase and currently we have no commitment under the truce.”

The Omani delegation did not make a statement about the results of meetings with Houthis leaders, casting doubt that no progress was made with respect to the renewal of the expired truce.

Houthis: Oman delegation in Sanaa to convey Saudi truce proposals

Chief negotiator of Yemen's Houthi group, Muhammad Abdul Salam, said an Omani delegation visited the capital Sanaa yesterday to convey proposals put forward by Saudi Arabia and international parties, the group's Al-Masirah TV channel reported.

Abdul Salam was quoted as saying that paying the salaries of government employees in Houthi-controlled areas and the Arab coalition's lifting of restrictions on airports and ports represent a basis for achieving progress in the humanitarian file as a prelude to progress in the rest of files.

He praised the role played by Oman, which he said had provided a lot of "support" to achieve peace in Yemen and in the humanitarian file, adding that the Omani delegations' repeated visits to Sanaa is "evidence of their good efforts".

Omani delegation arrives in Sana'a

A delegation from Oman arrived in Sana'a on Wednesday accompanied by head of national delegation Mohammed Abdulsalam.
During the several day visit, the Omani delegation will hold meetings with the national leadership over the latest developments in the country.
Abdulsalam stated that many meetings have been held with international, United Nations and Saudi delegations in Muscat since the end of the armistice.
He stressed that the visit of the Omani delegation aims to exchange ideas and proposals, resulted from the talks with the Saudi side and international parties, with the leadership in Sana'a in order to deal with the current situation.
Abdulsalam said that our demands are the legitimate and just rights of the Yemeni people, particularly the state employees' salary .
"We were flexible about entering into a sustainable or long truce that includes paying salaries to all state employees from oil and gas revenues according to the 2014 budget, holding talks lead to stopping the war, lifting the blockade and evacuating foreign forces from Yemen and then prepare for a political dialogue between Yemenis to reach a lasting political solution."

Oman engages in new mediation efforts as Houthis push for concessions

Previously constrained by a desire not to fluster Qatar amid the World Cup, Houthis have now moved to escalate their pressures on the internationally-recognised government and the international community.

In the past few days, Houthi political and military officials have taken turns issuing threats to resume military attacks on the economic interests of the Arab coalition countries, so as to block international shipping waterways in the Red Sea and disrupt global energy supplies.

Asked if the visit by the Omani delegation to Sana'a is an indication of an imminent breakthrough in the negotiations which have taken place so far in Muscat, Maged Al-Madhaji is executive director and a co-founder of the Sana'a Center for Strategic Studies, said the visit is “less a reflection of the progress of the talks than its complex entanglements.”

Yemeni analysts have downplayed the chances of success of the mediation led by Muscat in ensuring the extension of the truce and reactivating the political settlement process, given the current international and regional positions on the Yemeni crisis and the Houthis' insistence on extracting maximum concessions in their favour.

The analysts believe the internationally recognised government may not be willing to continue making unilateral concessions as they have done so far.

Yemeni political researcher Saeed Bakran told The Arab Weekly, “Oman is moving to contain the situation before the war erupts again.”

Abdulsalam reveals reasons for Omani delegation’s visit to Sanaa

Head of the Sanaa negotiating delegation, Mohammed Abdulsalam, on Wednesday said that the Omani delegation’s visit comes to convey the ideas and proposals of the discussions with the Saudis and international parties to the political leadership in Sanaa.

Abdulsalam confirmed in a press statement that the Sultanate of Oman is keen to achieve pace in Yemen as a matter of interest and neighborhood and its role in the talks with all parties is important and positive.

“The brothers in Oman provided a lot of support to achieve peace in Yemen and in the humanitarian file, and their frequent visits to Sanaa are evidence of their kind efforts,” he said.

Abdulsalam indicated that the Saudi-led coalition countries targeted the economic side and greatly deepened the economic rift by targeting the bank and the currency.

“If we advance in the humanitarian file, represented in paying salaries and opening airports and ports, we can advance in other files,” he added.

He stressed the need to separate the humanitarian file from the military file, noting that Sanaa’s demands belong to all Yemenis, without exception, throughout the Yemeni territory.

Abuse of domestic workers continues in Saudi Arabia: Report

A new report has revealed that domestic workers in Saudi Arabia continue to suffer from abuse at the hands of their employers, despite recent labor reforms in the kingdom.

According to a report by The Times on Monday, migrant housekeepers are being subjected to physical, mental, and sexual abuse by their employers in the country.

The report went on to say that the major reforms announced by Saudi Arabia for its migrants workers in 2021 do not apply to all the workers, arguing that the"new freedoms" have only been given to "those working in private sectors," such as oil and gas.

Saudi Arabia has a terrible reputation when it comes to the rights of migrant workers, who are forced to work long hours and invariably subjected to abuse.

In October 2020, the Saudi authorities announced that they were working on the notorious Kafala or sponsorship system, described by critics as "modern day slavery."

Under the Kafala system, the legal status of migrant workers is controlled by their employers, leaving them prone to abuse and exploitation.

Saudi Arabia promised to roll out the Kafala reforms in March 2021. However, those reforms don’t apply to 3.7 million domestic workers as they are excluded from the kingdom's labor laws.

The latest report further noted that four million women and men who work as domestic helpers, farmers, and drivers "are still restricted,” adding that their employers have admitted that they had been denying laborers' passports, among other things.

It also said several human traffickers have admitted to employing “physical punishment” to punish their victims if they "talked back," and they demanded that the maids work nonstop for as little as $6 per day.

Riyadh Asking For F-35 Jets in Exchange for Normalization With ‘Israel’ - Yedioth

Israeli’ Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported that Saudi Arabia and the ‘Israeli’ entity have been in direct contact for the normalization of ties as Riyadh has set the Unites States’ selling of advanced weapons, including F-35 fighter jets, as one of the conditions for arriving at an agreement.

In a report on Thursday which cited three sources, Yedioth noted that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have been in direct contact.

“Bin Salman has set some conditions including solving ties with Biden administration in issues such as removal of the ban on selling advanced weapons, particularly F-35 fighter jets, to Saudi Arabia.”

The Zionist regime has been one of the opponents of F-35 delivery to Saudi Arabia and other regional states.

The stealth fighter jet also had a key role when the so-called Abraham Accords were signed in September 2020 as the US pledged to sell 50 F-35 fighter jets to the United Arab Emirates [UAE]. After two years, however, the deal has been at a standstill due to concerns over Tel Aviv’s so-called military edge in the region among other reasons.

The Hebrew newspaper said fulfilling such conditions may be hard or even impossible.

Saudi Academic: Saudis Don’t Want to Pivot to China

The writer explained that there are mixed feelings among Saudi youth about replacing the US with China, as some feel betrayed by the US and others feel a deep admiration for American culture.

He stated that US-Saudi relations have been strained in recent years due to US policies, including the Iran nuclear deal. Some Saudis feel that the United States is no longer a reliable ally and look to China as an alternative. However, according to the Saudi academic, some Saudis' hopes that China will replace the United States for the kingdom are "purely naive."

Al-Yahya explained that it is unimaginable to see "our region without US technology, innovation, defense cooperation and security relations."

He continued, “imagine a region where the benefits and limits of personal freedom are not subjects to be debated by the people and their rulers but things dictated by a centralized one-party state that sees God as its enemy,” referring to the system of government followed in China.

"It is foolish to confuse the miscalculation of the United States with the impotence of the United States," he said.

Rhetoric vs. reality: Biden’s foreign policy in review

At mid-term, the president’s actions in these key areas don’t yet match his early, bold talk. But it’s not too late for course corrections.

Meanwhile, the administration appears to have failed to redeem its pledge to rejoin the JCPOA, in part due to a lack of urgency and flexibility in pursuing an agreement. In a December 4 speech, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken implied that the administration was still committed to the deal, while at the same time making a veiled threat to use force if Iran seeks a nuclear weapon.

Blinken’s statement was contradicted by a November 4 statement by President Biden himself. A video of a political rally, which was only made widely available in late December, shows Biden responding to a question about the Iran deal by saying, “It’s dead, but we’re not going to announce it.” When asked about the video, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said “there is no progress happening with respect to the Iran deal now. We don’t anticipate any progress, anytime in the near future. That’s just not our focus.”

Meanwhile, the administration lobbied against recent efforts to pass a War Powers Resolution on Yemen in the Senate, which advocates say would have cut off U.S. arms and military support to Saudi Arabia as a way to prevent it from restarting attacks on Yemen, as well as to persuade it to negotiate in good faith for an agreement to end the war. The primary sponsor of the resolution, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) pulled it at the last minute under an agreement with the administration to come up with language that both sides could live with.

How Yemen returned to the discourse in Washington

Ending the war in the country had been one of the most discussed foreign policy topics of Washington for years.

And while the White House appointed seasoned diplomat Timothy Lenderking as a special envoy to help find a peaceful settlement to the conflict, the warring sides were not able to extend a truce that expired in October, raising risks of renewed violence.

Sanders’ resolution

Against that backdrop, Senator Bernie Sanders – joined by other progressives – introduced a congressional measure to force an end to US support for the coalition, but he later withdrew the bill at the request of the White House.

The extent of the Pentagon involvement in Yemen also remains unclear. Even Lenderking told Congress last year that he was not in the “information loop” about US military support for the coalition.

The truce

The US envoy has also largely taken the Saudi-led coalition’s side in his public remarks.

As Yemen was slowly becoming a forgotten issue in Washington, Sanders’ ill-fated resolution renewed the debate about the US role in the country. And it came at a time when there is plenty of anger against Saudi Arabia in Washington over its decision through OPEC+ to cut oil production.

The oil cuts were announced before the US midterm election and after Biden visited the kingdom and engaged in a much-publicized fist-bump with Crown Prince bin Salman.

Many Democratic lawmakers cited the Yemen war during the backlash against Saudi Arabia and OPEC+.

Sanders may not have had the votes to pass the resolution, but the bill managed to bring Yemen back to the headlines. It remains to be seen whether it will spur any change in the Biden administration’s Middle East policies.

OPINION: The Yemen ‘Yes-Men’ ride again

Every time Congress rattles its war powers saber against continuing U.S. support for Saudi Arabia’s war on Yemen, presidents simultaneously threaten to veto such resolutions, and pretend they’re just about ready to end that support, if only Congress will back off. And it does.

Meanwhile, the war rolls merrily along

Why? Because despite Joe Biden’s campaign pledge to treat Saudi Arabia’s regime as a “pariah” over everything from its involvement with the 9/11 hijackers to the murder of exiled journalist Jamal Khashoggi, he remains as convinced as his predecessors that the U.S. desperately needs the support and approval of Saudi terror kingpin … er, “Crown Prince” … Mohammed bin Salman.

Instead of the “pariah” treatment, MbS gets visits, fist bumps, and pleas to increase oil production so American consumers don’t have to pick up the tab for — and Biden doesn’t get the blame for — the price effects of U.S. sanctions on Russian oil.

And U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil.

And U.S. sanctions on Venezuelan oil.

Do you detect a theme? American politicians’ moonshine about “energy independence” is a perpetual riff on St. Augustine’s prayer: “Give me chastity and continence, but not yet.”

It’s not just about oil, though.

It is time for Congress to hold Saudi Arabia responsible for its victims

A combination of disapproval from the Biden administration and lack of votes to discharge the legislation from committee effectively killed a Yemen War Powers Resolution last week by convincing Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to table his bill until a Saudi-friendly, Republican House takes power in January 2023.

This is a contradiction for a political party that spent the latter half of the Trump administration criticizing the former president’s relationship with Saudi Arabia. For Biden, this means broken campaign trail promises to stand up for human rights and rightfully treat Saudi Arabia as a “pariah state.”

Saudi Arabia’s goals in Yemen are simple: empower a puppet leader and cause suffering to any political opposition, even if they are civilians.

Given the nature of air and sea campaigns that are unaccompanied by ground troops, all a country can inflict is damage. Without boots on the ground, there is nobody to hold territory. In essence, waging a no-ground-troop campaign can only inflict suffering and will never create stability.

More hawkish critics point to the lack of violence as evidence that a War Powers Resolution or reduction in weapons sales to the kingdom is unnecessary. As written, however, Sanders’ resolution would merely force the Biden administration to end U.S. support for the war in Yemen without congressional approval. The bill does not end all arms sales to Saudi Arabia, nor does it force the kingdom to stop waging its war.

Social Media Platforms Powerful Tools, US Possesses in Wars

When the United States decides to go to war, it must mobilize all its sources of strength in favor of achieving its goals, no matter how immoral they may be.

The social media platforms emanating from the United States represent one of the most prominent manifestations of the power that the US possesses in its wars, on top of which are the Twitter and Facebook platforms. They work to market American propaganda and block everything that proves the falsity and deception of Washington's justifications in wars, similar to what is happening in the war that the people of Yemen are exposed to.

The role played by US social media companies reveals that the principles of freedom and independence of capital in the US are just a trick to mislead the world, and that the US is living in a state of continuous public mobilization, within the framework of its aggressive policy towards the world.

Twitter's blatant bias in support of American wars prompted the American Liberation Party in New Hampshire to demand that the Twitter administration be held accountable, accusing it of complicity in the crimes of genocide against the people of Yemen at the hands of the coalition. This was after the publication of leaks revealing the complicity of the Twitter administration with the Pentagon to exaggerate the American military propaganda targeting Yemen.

“Twitter helped the United States and Saudi Arabia commit genocide in Yemen,” the Liberal Party said. “Tell us again how Twitter is a private company!”

Promote Executioner, Force Victim to Remain Silent

The Facebook and Twitter administrations deliberately block any photos of civilian victims in Yemen as a result of the coalition raids, under the pretext that these photos “violate publishing laws.” Whenever someone tries to talk about the horrific violations that Yemenis are subjected to, the Twitter and Facebook administrations suspend his account with the justification of “incitement to hatred.” On the other hand, the administration of Facebook and Twitter does not hesitate to impose all allegations of incitement and hatred against the people of Yemen, in a way that contradicts the most basic standards of liberal equality to allow opinion and other opinion. Which makes these companies just cheap propaganda tools in the hands of the US government.

It does not seem that the new owner of the Twitter platform, Elon Musk, intends to change these policies.

TWITTER AIDED THE PENTAGON IN ITS COVERT ONLINE PROPAGANDA CAMPAIGN

Internal documents show Twitter whitelisted CENTCOM accounts that were then used to run its online influence campaign abroad.

Behind the scenes, however, the social networking giant provided direct approval and internal protection to the U.S. military’s network of social media accounts and online personas, whitelisting a batch of accounts at the request of the government. The Pentagon has used this network, which includes U.S. government-generated news portals and memes, in an effort to shape opinion in Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Kuwait, and beyond.

The accounts in question started out openly affiliated with the U.S. government. But then the Pentagon appeared to shift tactics and began concealing its affiliation with some of these accounts — a move toward the type of intentional platform manipulation that Twitter has publicly opposed. Though Twitter executives maintained awareness of the accounts, they did not shut them down, but let them remain active for years. Some remain active.

As an indirect consequence of these efforts, one former Twitter employee explained to The Intercept, accounts controlled by the military that were frequently engaging with extremist groups were being automatically flagged as spam. The former employee, who was involved with the whitelisting of CENTCOM accounts, spoke with The Intercept under condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

In his email, Kahler sent a spreadsheet with 52 accounts. He asked for priority service for six of the accounts, including @yemencurrent, an account used to broadcast announcements about U.S. drone strikes in Yemen. Around the same time, @yemencurrent, which has since been deleted, had emphasized that U.S. drone strikes were “accurate” and killed terrorists, not civilians, and promoted the U.S. and Saudi-backed assault on Houthi rebels in that country.

Other accounts on the list were focused on promoting U.S.-supported militias in Syria and anti-Iran messages in Iraq. One account discussed legal issues in Kuwait. Though many accounts remained focused on one topic area, others moved from topic to topic. For instance, @dala2el, one of the CENTCOM accounts, shifted from messaging around drone strikes in Yemen in 2017 to Syrian government-focused communications this year.

A Shaky Foundation

The Myth of Authoritarian Stability in the Middle East

Middle East autocracies’ own policies produce and reinforce many of the region’s most important problems, tensions, and grievances.

Introduction

U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East is built on a myth. For decades, policymakers have put faith in the belief that authoritarian governments are the only viable upholders of stability and order in the Middle East. This account gets things backward. These regimes’ own policies produce and reinforce many of the region’s most important problems, tensions, and grievances. Crediting the myth of authoritarian stability has led the United States to shower select autocratic actors in the region with tremendous amounts of military aid, advanced weaponry, diplomatic cover, intelligence assistance, and more. Indeed, the Middle East—specifically U.S. partners—receives more military aid and weapons sales than any other region on Earth.1

The strategic justifications for these partnerships—and the massive amounts of monetary, military, and diplomatic support spent by the United States—have traditionally included the importance of the region’s oil supplies and maritime routes, countering transnational terrorism, and preventing the emergence of a regional hegemon that is hostile to America.2 This traditional reasoning has been challenged by a number of recent analyses questioning America’s expansive regional footprint and whether it is needed to advance these objectives.3 In recent policy debates, including those inside the Biden administration, the driving rationale for remaining at the center of Middle East politics and security has been the return of great power competition. Proponents of this view argue that the United States must maintain close relations with regional autocracies in order to stave off instability and keep Middle Eastern states from turning to Moscow or Beijing.

This paper challenges the myth of authoritarian stability and the idea that these partnerships are advantageous for the United States. The first section examines the evolution of American support for Middle Eastern autocracies from the 20th century through the Biden administration. The second section shows the logic underpinning the U.S. alignment with autocratic regimes in the region. The third section shows the flaws in such a strategy, including competition with Russia or China, or both. The final section suggests changes that policymakers could make to move away from empowering autocracies in the region.

The Yemen Conundrum

The United States wants to end the war in Yemen, but given its lack of leverage over the Houthis, the few policy options it does have will likely make the situation worse.

In many ways the debate over Sanders’ resolution is emblematic of the broader Yemen conundrum for the United States: The United States wants to end the war in Yemen but has no real means of achieving this goal, and the few policy options it does have will likely make the situation worse.

Sanders’ resolution, for instance, is well meaning but dated and out of touch with the realities on the ground in Yemen. Like most in the United States, Sanders wants to see an end to the war in Yemen, which is often described as the “world’s worst humanitarian crisis.” But his resolution would likely have expanded the war not ended it.

By cutting off intelligence, maintenance, and spare parts to the Saudi and Emirati air forces, the United States would effectively aid the Houthis in their attempts to take Marib and the governorate’s oil and gas fields.

The Sanders resolution, as Yemen watchers such as Katherine Zimmerman of the American Enterprise Institute pointed out, also seemed aimed at punishing Saudi Arabia for its “sins of the past,”

For many in the United States this makes sense. After all, the United States’ original sin in Yemen was the decision of the administration of former President Barack Obama to support an ill-advised and poorly planned war in Yemen that it could neither control nor direct. In many cases, it was U.S.-made planes, U.S. missiles, U.S. refueling flights, U.S. spare parts, and U.S. maintenance that allowed Saudi Arabia to carry out airstrikes in Yemen.

Take that all away, the argument goes, and Saudi Arabia would have to withdraw. However, a Saudi withdrawal would not actually end the war in Yemen. In fact, it might actually extend it, as local Yemeni armed groups scramble to secure and hold as much territory as possible.

The United States lacks the leverage to pressure the Houthis to negotiate in good faith, and the few actions the United States could take would make the war worse rather than better.

As a result, the United States finds itself, as it has for much of the past two years in Yemen, in a state of policy paralysis. It has few viable options save to maintain a tenuous status quo and hope that a breakthrough presents itself.

https://agsiw.org/the-yemen-conundrum/

My comment: Still taking for granted that the US should play “peace broker” and “policeman” all over the world, while never having kept in mind anything different from what is labeled “US interests”. The US simply should keep off Yemen.

Saudi Arabia wants dialogue after Jordan meeting: Iran minister

Several factors have delayed a sixth round of direct bilateral talks, which could be held at the foreign-minister level.

Saudi Arabia is open to more dialogue with Iran, according to comments made by the Iranian foreign minister after he met his Saudi counterpart in Jordan.

Since April 2021, Iraq has hosted five rounds of direct talks between the two, the latest of which came in April this year. A sixth round has been anticipated for months, with speculation that it could for the first time happen at the level of foreign ministers, but there have been several roadblocks.

On the other hand, Iran has significantly intensified its rhetoric against Saudi Arabia, accusing it of bankrolling media channels that, according to Tehran, have “incited terrorism” during the country’s unrest since nation-wide protests began in mid-September.

The apparent meeting between the foreign ministers in Jordan is a sign that neither side wants to shut the door to dialogue completely, but should not raise expectations for immediate tangible results either, according to Hamidreza Azizi, a fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs.

Saudi-Iran talks said to have stalled over protests in Iran

Baghdad-mediated diplomatic talks between regional rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia have come to a halt, largely because of Tehran claims the Sunni kingdom has played a role in alleged foreign incitement of the mass anti-government protests underway in Iran, multiple Iraqi officials said.

The talks had been lauded as a breakthrough that would ease regional tensions. Iraq’s new Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said last month after taking office that Iraq had been asked to continue facilitating the dialogue.

However, an anticipated sixth round of talks, to be hosted by Baghdad, has not been scheduled because Tehran refuses to meet with Saudi officials as protests in Iran enter a fourth month, according to the Iraqi officials.

Forgotten Arabia: Himyarite Yemen and Early Islam

Islamic historians have tended to overfocus on the more easily intelligible north Arabia and dismiss the south

Pre-Islamic Yemen has attracted relatively little attention from scholars of early Islamic history, including those who regard themselves as radically revisionist.

This has been no more than a tour d’horizon of issues indicating the relevance of Yemen to the early Islamic period and the Quranic thinking on monotheism. But it is enough, I hope, to suggest the extent of misplaced energy that some revisionist scholars have given to north Arabia and attempts to tie the Hijazi movement to Palestine, and Petra in particular

[Aden] Yemeni Government Accuses Houthis of Exploiting Truce to Increase Looting

The Central Bank of Yemen in Aden affirmed its commitment to the monetary policies it set to protect the local currency from collapse and maintain the stability of the markets.

In parallel, Information Minister Muammar al-Eryani accused the Houthi militia of exploiting the truce to double the looting of resources and increase levies.

In an official statement, Al-Eryani said the Iranian-backed terrorist Houthi militia has continued to plunder hundreds of billions of state revenues, without assuming any obligations, and stopped the payment of salaries to public sector employees in the areas under its control, ignoring the difficult economic conditions of citizens and the worsening humanitarian crisis.

The Yemeni minister stated that the total revenues looted by the Houthi militia from taxes, customs, zakat, endowments, fuel, and domestic gas amounted in 2020 to 2.3 trillion riyals.

Currency Continues to Collapse in Saudi-UAE-occupied Areas

The exchange rates of the Yemeni riyal decreased, Monday, against foreign currencies in exchange shops in the governorates of Aden, Hadhramout, and the rest of the occupied regions.

The price of buying one dollar was 1172 riyals and selling 1182 riyals, and the exchange rate for buying the Saudi riyal was between 308 riyals and selling 312 riyals, and the price of buying the UAE dirham was 310 riyals and selling 314 riyals.

Observers of the economic situation in Yemen saw that the financial policy of the Salvation Government in Sana’a proved its success in maintaining the stability of the local exchange rate of the Yemeni riyal against foreign currencies, especially the dollar and the Saudi riyal, where the Yemeni riyal stabilized at 559 riyals per dollar.

Yemen currency loses further value against other currencies

Yemen's rial currency lost further value versus other currencies as foreign cash is in short supply in the country, it is being reported.

A US dollar is traded this Tuesday for 1185 rials up from 1135 rials at the beginning of this December.

The US dollar equaled 115 rials before the beginning of the war in 2015 and the drastic fall of the rial has since brought the country to a famine-like condition.

Film: Urbanization threatens camel breeding in Aden

Camel breeding has been one of the most significant traditional professions for decades and a cultural heritage that characterizes the desert and countryside of Yemen. However, nowadays this profession is facing the threat of extinction as a result of the eight-year civil war and urbanization. The scarce studies have varied on the percentage of urban sprawl on agricultural land and has been estimated at an annual average of 3.7%, meaning that over the next three decades, the entire agricultural area will disappear. Studies indicate that with the increase in population density and the absence of urban planning in most Yemeni cities, people are turning to building facilities in the non-mountainous plains because they are suitable for agriculture and close to public services.

AQAP’s Heru Sisanto: an Indonesian Jihadist in Yemen

coinciding with these historical, academic, and business ties is also the involvement of Indonesians in militancy in Yemen, as evidenced by the life of Heru Sisanto.

There were signs of Indonesian foreign fighters even before the Islamic State (IS)’s declaration of a caliphate, as Indonesians began posting requests to join al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) on social media (Twitter/@Sulaemanbahri, July 2, 2011). Later, as the Yemeni civil war was underway in 2015, the Houthis arrested 23 Indonesians apparently for supporting the opposing Saudi-backed side. The Houthis then allowed the Indonesian government to repatriate them (antaranews.com, March 30, 2015).

By 2020, evidence of Indonesians fighting with either AQAP or IS’s Yemeni branch emerged incidentally from a Houthi video, which showed a raid on a jihadist hideout (detik.com, August 31, 2020). Among the images shown in the video were Indonesian currency and the identity card of an Indonesian. The name and address on the card, however, turned out to be falsified, which was discovered as Indonesian security forces conducted their own raid at the supposed address (Twitter/@Natsecjeff, August 29, 2020).

Recently, the most prominent case of an Indonesian jihadist in Yemen was AQAP’s Heru Sisanto. He was first featured in an AQAP video, which acknowledged his death not in combat, but from leukemia, and noted his alias was Abu Musa al-Indonesi

Yemen, Solutions... Arab Coalition Opens Doors, Iran Closes Them

It is not possible to explain the events of the year 2022 in Yemen without returning to a “golden day”, after which the defense equation led by the Arab Coalition and the Yemeni Armed Forces changed. The day was November 21, 2021.

It was after that day that Houthi military escalation transformed.

The Arab Coalition had adopted a strict defense strategy, dealing painful blows to Houthi strategic sites. Moreover, the Coalition exposed the Houthis for using the international airport in Sana’a to launch attacks on Saudi civilian and vital sites.

Coalition strikes destroyed dozens of workshops and warehouses for assembling ballistic missiles and explosive drones.

After several months, Houthis realized that the battle for Marib was far from over, so they submitted to the UN armistice.

US-Saudi Aggression Insists on Imposing Complications to Gain Concessions

Warnings issued by Sana’a against any attempt by the US-Saudi aggression to escalate the economy have increased. Sana'a's warnings coincided with the conclusion of the Omani delegation's visit to Sana'a last Sunday, after the latter toured talks for about four days in Sana'a.

Observers do not rule out that the US-Saudi aggression has threatened to tighten the blockade and take more steps to harm the economic situation in Yemen. This prompted Sana’a to promise a harsh response to any risks that the coalition might take.

So far, there are no indications that the Yemenis can bet on to end the war. Despite the ease of the path leading to a settlement, the coalition insists on imposing complications on the scene to extract more concessions, using dirty pressure cards by threatening to tighten the siege.

The starvation war represents the last card of pressure on Yemen, after the abject failures faced by the aggression in Yemen. It seems, from the point of view of observers, that the United Nations and the Security Council have become the real enemy of the Yemeni People. The aggression no longer has any justification to continue the war, rather, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have become in a position that requires them to expedite their exit from Yemen.

In view of Sana’a’s conditions, it is clear that it provided all that is logical to end the war, by demanding the lifting of the blockade, which is taking place outside international law, and has proven to be a means of committing mass killings by starvation. It was unable to protect the countries involved in aggression from the strikes of Yemen, and any continuation of this blockade will only lead to more civilian casualties.

As for the demand for the departure of foreign forces from Yemen, no one can claim that it is an “unfair” request! No country in the world has ever accepted the presence of foreign forces on its soil, regardless of the justifications.

From the point of view of observers, the demand for the departure of foreign forces from Yemen represents the crux of all the talks that take place to end the war. It seems that the US ambitions to be present in the Bab al-Mandab and the islands of Yemen on the Red and Arab seas represent the cornerstone of ending the war.

Yemen Blames Its Civil War On Iran, Says Can't Be Part Of Solution

Yemen's foreign minister has blamed Iran and its support for Huthi Shi'ite rebels for fueling the country's civil war and said Tehran can't be part of the solution.

"Iran is the cause of the problem, Iran continues to support the Huthis, Iranian arms are smuggled. Iran is part of the problem, not the solution," Foreign Minister Abdulmalik al-Mekhlafi said on August 21 when asked if Tehran could contribute to a political solution in Yemen at a news conference at the United Nations in New York.

Bombing the Public Telecommunication Corporation

Turning a playground into a death arena

Although it was not a main play yard, it was good enough for children and young men to play football. There was no referee with a whistle to announce the end of the game. The rule of the game is rather open and spontaneous, and the game ends when Malik takes his ball and returns home.

As the ball was bouncing off the players’ feet and when the audience was watching and cheering and the bystanders were passing by, the yard of the Public Telecommunications Corporation in Hodeida turned into a horrific scene of killed and injured.

At 10:00 pm, on Thursday 20 January 2022, the Saudi Emirati-led Coalition targeted the Public Telecommunications Corporation in the Port district, Hodeidah governorate. Its bombs were the referee’s whistle that ended the game bloodily.

4 killed and 13 injured including 4 children is the casualty toll of that bloody evening.

The victim Wadei Al- Harazi begins his statement by saying:

“My son Wael (8 years old) and my nephew Amir (11 years old) were playing in front of me and suddenly I couldn’t see anything except darkness. There was no sound of my son or my nephew.

I was pulling out the bodies and the injured children. My ring and pinky fingers of my left hand were cut off and my right leg was broken. I was bleeding from every part of my body. I couldn’t find my son and I was shouting and calling on him. The rescuers found him about 30m away from me. His little body flew away and hit the ground and he died immediately. My nephew is still in the hospital.”

The 20-years-old Mazen spoke with a somber tone about the condition of his mother after his brother Ramiz (10 years old) was killed: “My mother couldn’t accept that my brother had died.” She had a heart attack as a result of the shock.”

Although the verbal expressions that described the heinous nature of the incident differed, the features and faces of the victims were unified by their physical and psychological wounds. T

2,909 citizens, including African immigrants, were killed and injured by the Saudi enemy army's artillery shells and missiles on the border areas of Sa'ada province since the beginning of 2022.
Director of Razeh Rural Hospital Abdullah Musreeh confirmed to the Yemeni News Agency (Saba) that 907 people have been killed and injured by the Saudi enemy gunshots, artillery and missiles in Shada border district since the signing of the UN armistice agreement in early April.
He stated that during the same period, the hospital received 111 killed and 796 injured people, including African immigrants, stressing that the Saudi regime has never respect the UN armistice and its criminal behavior has never stopped.
He explained that many cases were transferred to the capital's hospitals due to the inability of Razeh Hospital to provide the necessary services for the critical cases.
Director of Munabeh Rural Hospital Ali Al-Ayashi stated that the hospital has received 169 killed and 1,833 injured people, including African immigrants, during the current year.

Yemen through the eyes of artificial intelligence This album is a summary of my experience with one of the most powerful artificial intelligence techniques that I have tried over the past two weeks. I tried giving him specific descriptions to draw some pictures and the results were awesome. It came to my mind to see how the most famous Yemeni landmarks would look if they were drawn by artificial intelligence.

Theatrical performances return to Aden with Shakespeare

After the closure of theatres for over a period of three years, theatrical performances return to Aden with Hamlet of the famous English poet and dramatist William Shakespeare.
The English drama will be presented to the audience in the Adeni dialect by The Gulf of Aden Theatrical Troupe at a stage of an old church in Crater city.
In partnership with the British Council, the Gulf of Aden's actors conducted around two years of rehearsals and practices in London and Wales in preparation for the show which will premiere next January.
