Al-Qaeda sends military reinforcements as fighting against STC rages

The district of Mudiyah in Abyan province, southern Yemen, on Monday, witnessed fierce battles between the UAE-backed militias and tribes known as “Al-Zumra”, supported by the Islah Party and Al-Qaeda.

Local sources said that fierce clashes took place between the two sides, amid reports that al-Qaeda has sent hundreds of its members to take part in the new battle against the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC)’s militias in the district of Mudiyah.

This came after the “STC” factions invaded residential villages in the district

Abyan attacks raise fears of al-Qaeda revival in south Yemen

Recent deadly attacks in Mudiyah district have sparked alarm in the southern province, but observers note the attackers' limitations.

Recent attacks targeting security forces in southern Yemen's Abyan province have raised fears about a resurgence of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in that area, following a successful purge of the group.

Two recent incidents involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that occurred January 6 at the entrance to Wadi Omran in Abyan's Mudiyah district have triggered alarm in the former al-Qaeda stronghold.

Yemen parliament speaks up against fuel, power, water price hike plan

Yemen’s parliament has publicly condemned the government’s plan to hike fuel and utility prices, among other revenue-generating methods, the latest in a string of outraged responses to the policies.

The Leadership Authority of the parliament stated that the government’s decision to increase fuel prices, electricity and water bills did not take into account the worsening economic situation and the miserable living conditions of the population.

It demanded that the government rescind the price increases and seek other means of generating revenues without harming the populace.

“The decisions did not consider the living situations of citizens or the alternatives needed for military and civilian state personnel and low-income groups,” the lawmakers said in a statement.

US Uses 'Muslim Brotherhood' in Yemen to Separate, Control Oil-Rich Hadramout Governate

For nearly three months, the drums of war have been beating at the gates of Hadramout, but the issue did not go beyond the war of words, in order to create an atmosphere at the local and international levels, to impose a new map on Yemen by the coalition forces.

In conjunction with the growing American interest in the Hadramout governorate in eastern Yemen, the governorate has turned into a theater of tension and attraction between the coalition parties. However, what is remarkable in this war was the positions of the Islah Party, as the head of the Islah Party in Hadramout Governorate, Salah Batis, rushed to launch an invitation “Hadramout Independence” in response to the statements of the Transitional Council, demanding the removal of the party’s militants from the “first military zone” in the valley and desert of Hadramout.

Saudi Arabia also changed its positions by supporting its arch-rival represented by the Islah Party in the face of the “Southern Transitional Council”, which is considered a spoiled child to the alliance.

Observers say that the disputes taking place between the parties to the coalition over Wadi Hadramout are more than just a struggle for control, as usual.

They believe that the Islah Party's haste to adopt a position different from the party's policies that claim to adhere to the unity of Yemen, and adopting the call for "Hadramawt independence" seems not far from the American moves and Washington's remarkable interest in Hadramout Governorate.

Despite the anger of the Saudi regime at the conference on cooperation between the United States and the Muslim Brotherhood, which will be held tomorrow in Washington, and the torrent of insults that the Saudi regime is hurling at the Yemeni Brotherhood against the background of the Washington conference, Saudi Arabia is still committed to supporting the position of the Brotherhood in the valley and desert of Hadramout, as confirmed by observers.

Pro-Saudi Government Admits Collapse of Yemen’s Currency in Its Areas of Control

The pro-aggression government obtained loans and aid amounting to one billion and 300 million dollars last December, but this did not prevent the Yemen’s riyal from recording more collapse in the areas controlled by the US-Saudi coalition.

What is new in terms of the issue of the collapse of the Yemeni riyal, came recently during a meeting of the so-called presidential council, last Saturday, where the council surprisingly decided “to form a crisis cell headed by the Prime Minister and the membership of a number of relevant ministers and the governor of the Central Bank to follow up on economic, financial and monetary developments and take immediate measures to limit the collapse of the currency,” which is the first time that the council has discussed since its appointment in place of Abd Rabbo Hadi, last April.

There is a firm conviction among citizens that the crisis of local deterioration is a fabricated crisis, as evidenced by the lack of seriousness in taking the necessary remedies to solve the problem, and providing marginal measures with the aim of “scattering dust on the eyes” and leaving the root causes of the crisis without any solutions.

The Southern Comeback in Yemen

The divide between southern groups from 1994 to 2007 obstructed progress on southern ambitions. Yet, the emergence of Hirak, the Southern Movement, in protest to increased marginalization of southerners in civil service jobs and the military, reinvigorated the resistance. This revival coincided with the war in Sadah between the Sana’a government and Zaydi Shia Houthi rebels. Hirak unified the southern political figures within and beyond Yemen’s borders. The movement attracted a new generation of young activists grabbing a hold of the narratives against northern occupation and demands for self-determination. The youth reached back to a country many did not experience but longed for as a consequence of marginalization within unified Yemen.

The sentiment grew among the youth as the Arab Spring reached Yemen in February 2011. While armed conflict erupted across northern Yemen between pro-Saleh forces and elements aligned with Yemen’s Muslim Brotherhood affiliate al-Islah, southerners organized sit-ins in Aden and peaceful protests across southern provinces. As Sana’a authorities ordered crackdowns on demonstrators in Aden, political groups and the general population refrained from organizing an armed uprising similar to the course of events in Amran, Mareb or Taiz.
A segment of the population across the south demanded from their leaders to meet northern aggression with force. Leaders like Zubaydi were prepared, with hundreds of trained men and light weapons, but restraint was the order from the organized leadership in Hirak. Leaders wanted the world to see the heavy-handed approach taken by Sana’a authorities, which continued following the transfer of power from Saleh to Hadi in February 2012. Unarmed civilian protesters were met with force by security forces now under the authority of a president of southern origin – by Fernando Carvajal

General Strike and Civil Disobedience in Aden

Aden city is witnessing a general strike and civil disobedience by merchants against the background of unfair decisions against them, which negatively affected the lives and livelihood of citizens.

The merchants announced the suspension of their business activity and the suspension of work on exporting and importing to and from Aden, for various commodities, including consumer and food.

This comes against the background of the decision of the Economic Council in Aden’s government to raise the customs exchange rate for imported goods from 500 to 750 per dollar.

The decision sparked widespread controversy and societal indignation on social media.

Yemeni activists called for demonstrations of anger in the areas controlled by the “Presidential Council” to condemn the lethal dose.

Sources loyal to the Saudi-led coalition revealed that US exercises were conducted in oil-rich of Hadramout, eastern Yemen.

Sources pointed out that the US forces have conducted various exercises in recent days for recruits of the “second military region” loyal to the UAE at Al-Rayyan airport.

According to the sources, the US forces took over the process of training the region’s recruits with the aim of sending them to Mahra, likely to send some of them to the directorates of Wadi Hadramout, amid demands of the leaders of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) militia to remove the gunmen of the “First Military Region” affiliated with Islah party from the city of Seiyun.

Hadhramaut tribes start recruitment campaign to oppose occupation of province

The “Hadhramaut Tribes Alliance” on Saturday approved the opening of the recruitment door for 10,000 members from the valley and desert districts of Hadhramaut province to confront threats in all districts.

This move by the tribes alliance aims to block the way for the UAE-funded Southern Transitional Council (STC) militias to control the province.

A statement issued by the tribes alliance during a meeting held in the city of Seiyun confirmed the alliance’s support for the leadership of the “First Military Region” affiliated with the Islah Party, calling for the formation of a brigade to be under the command of the Military Region’s chief of staff,” Amer bin Hatian Al-Nahdi.

In their statement, the tribes demanded the recruitment of 3,000 members from the valley’s districts within the security services to maintain security and social peace in all districts, and rejected the recruitment or presence of any armed elements from outside Hadhramaut, whatever the pretexts for their presence.

Al-Rayyan Airport turned into detention center, base for occupation

Al-Rayyan airport in the city of Mukalla has turned into a den of foreign conspiracy against the security and stability of the districts of Wadi Hadramout and the eastern districts of Yemen, according to political sources.

Adel al-Hassani, a former detainee in UAE prison and a leader in the so-called “Southern Resistance”, confirmed that mercenaries in the city of Seiyun receive directions from Emirati intelligence officers stationed at Al-Rayyan airport, located on the Arabian Sea, eastern Yemen.

Al-Hassani explained, in a tweet, that a meeting brought together the Emirati officers with the leaders of a group of mercenaries inside the airport, to demand the exit of the “First Military Region” forces present in Seiyun.

Could Peace be on the Horizon in Yemen?

Global Strat View caught up with Sana’a-based Yemeni journalist Ahmad Algohbary via WhatsApp to get a sense of what is happening. “A delegation of Omani officials visited Sana’s recently and had good meetings with the Houthis. Maybe it is a good sign for peace. They are saying it’s a good sign for peace coming soon, as Oman now is involved in the peace negotiations between Houthis and Saudis,” he said.

But it is more than just the ongoing dialogue being facilitated by Oman between the Saudis and Houthis. Algohbary believes peace could be achieved because Mohammed bin Salman is looking for a way to escape Yemen’s war. “He didn’t think that he would lose the war. Mohammed bin Salman thought that with US support and weapons, they would be able to end the Houthis. But imagine it’s eight years and more now, and they could not defeat them.” The Houthis are in a strong position, and MBS is looking for total peace because he wants to focus on his 2030 vision for Saudi Arabia, says Algohbary.

MBS wants to move forward on Vision 2030, but the brutal murder of Khashoggi, the war in Yemen, and relations with Iran all stand in his way. “These issues affected his vision of improving the economy and the infrastructure of Saudi Arabia. He’s also seeking to have the World Cup in Saudi Arabia in 2030. That’s why they signed Cristiano Ronaldo. They want him to be, as news reported, their ambassador to seek for Saudi Arabia to, you know, to have the world’s cup in their country in 2030,” says Algohbary. For these reasons, he wants peace because he cannot implement the vision while Houthis rockets are targeting the country. MBS wants peace with the Houthis but does not want to be seen acquiescing to all their demands. If he gives the Houthis everything they are asking for, he will look weak and defeated, and he wants to avoid that.

Sana'a government reportedly to extend truce

A Lebanese newspaper has claimed that the truce between Sana'a government in Yemen and the Saudi-led military coalition has been extended after the latter accepted the Yemeni side's demands.

Saudi Arabia has agreed to the demands of the negotiating team of the Yemeni National Salvation Government led by the Houthi Ansarullah movement which controls Sana'a, the Lebanese Al-Akhbar newspaper has said, citing its informed sources.

According to the report, at the top of the Sana'a government's demands in the talks was the payment of salaries to the employees and pensioners of the Yemeni government.

The newspaper further cited its sources as saying that the salaries of Yemeni employees will be paid in an international currency rather than local Yemeni currency based on the data provided in 2014 and that the money will be transferred to the Yemeni capital by a special plane each month.

Moreover, according to what has been agreed, the destinations of Sana'a International Airport will also be expanded and will include the countries of Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, India and Malaysia.

Also, all bans on imports to the Yemeni Al-Hudaiedh port in the south will be lifted.

Informed sources have said that a Saudi delegation led by the Saudi ambassador to Yemen, Muhammad Al-Jaber, left for Sana'a after the Omani mediation delegation's trip to Sana'a and held direct negotiations with Yemen's Ansarullah movement to complete the talks on the truce extension.

According to Al-Akhbar, the delay in the UN special envoy Hans Grundberg's trip to Yemen was made at Riyadh's own request to prevent creating a possible 'negative atmosphere' that could affect the process of the talks.

Al-Akhbar sources say that during the second visit by the Omani mediation delegation to Sana'a, they met with the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Yemeni National Salvation Government, and in the meeting, a map of the critical positions that the army of the Yemeni military can target was shown to them.

The report further claimed that in the meeting, the Sana'a officials emphasized that they will not allow the Riyadh airport to be open, while the Sana'a airport remains closed.

Furthermore, Seyyed Abdul AL-Malik al-Houthi, the leader of the Houthi Ansarullah movement, declared to his Omani guests in the meeting that any attempt to lift the ban on oil exports from the south and east of Yemen will be met with the expansion of attacks by Sana'a armed forces (the army of the Sana'a government and its allied forces known as the popular committees).

UN envoy arrives in Yemen's capital to push Houthis for truce renewal

UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg arrived in the Houthi-held Yemeni capital Sanaa on Monday to push the militia for truce renewal.

Grundberg was scheduled to hold meetings with Houthi leaders during the visit, the Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported.

The humanitarian issues, including paying salaries to the civil servants in the Houthi-held areas and releasing war prisoners between the Houthi group and the government, would top the discussions, according to the TV report.

The visit came amid international efforts to renew the truce in Yemen and pave the way for a political settlement.

President Al-Mashat stresses importance of UN role in peace process in Yemen

President of the Supreme Political Council, Mahdi Al-Mashat, on Monday stressed the importance of the United Nations role in pushing the peace process forward in Yemen.

This came during his meeting with the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, who is currently visiting Sanaa along with his accompanying team.

President Al-Mashat confirmed Sanaa’s keenness on alleviating the human suffering of the Yemeni people, which was created by the Saudi-led coalition, and fulfilling the people’s demands for a just and honorable peace.

Yemen: Lull in major fighting provides space for dialogue

Warring parties in Yemen should take advantage of the current absence of major fighting and use it to advance their talks towards peace, the top UN official in the country said on Monday in his latest briefing to the Security Council.

Special Envoy Hans Grundberg reported on his ongoing mediation efforts with the Government and Houthi rebels, also known as Ansar Allah, following their failure last October to extend a landmark truce that lasted six months.

Regional and international efforts towards ending their eight-year war have also intensified, pointing to “a potential step-change” in the trajectory of the conflict.

“Yemen needs an agreement that includes a shared vision for the way forward, in order to avoid a return to full-blown conflict. I therefore urge the parties to make the most of the space for dialogue provided by the absence of large-scale fighting,” he said.

No major escalation

The overall situation on the ground in Yemen has remained stable, with no major escalation or changes in the disposition of frontlines, Mr. Grundberg told ambassadors.

However, some limited military activity continues along frontlines, particularly in five governorates - Ma’rib, Taiz, Dali’, Hodeidah, and Lahj - as well as along the border with Saudi Arabia, which has resulted in civilian casualties.

Warning against the possibility of renewed violence, he urged the parties “to actively work to extend the longest period of relative quiet we have seen in the past eight years, which offers a much-needed reprieve for the Yemeni population.”

A holistic approach

Turning to his mediation efforts, the UN envoy said he has been in continued contact with the two sides and countries in the region.

Discussions have focused on options to secure agreement on military de-escalation, as well as measures to prevent further economic deterioration, and mitigating the conflict’s impact on civilians.

Mr. Grundberg cautioned against “short-term measures and a piecemeal approach that focuses on individual issues”.

Instead, he has been engaging around a more holistic vision and ensuring the parties move towards a more comprehensive settlement, which includes resumption of a political process as well as a nationwide ceasefire.

Regional support ‘crucial’

“We are currently seeing an intensification of regional and international diplomatic activity to resolve the conflict in Yemen, and I would like to reiterate my appreciation for the efforts of Saudi Arabia and Oman in this regard,” said Mr. Grundberg.

“While this support is crucial in both the negotiation and implementation phases of any agreement, I would also like to stress the importance of Yemeni ownership of the process. Many of the issues on the table, especially those related to sovereignty issues, can only be sustainably resolved through an inclusive, intra-Yemeni dialogue.”

Advice for negotiations

Although the situation “remains complex and fluid”, Mr. Grundberg said the dialogue efforts have allowed for a clearer definition of the parties’ position and the development of options for mutually acceptable solutions to outstanding issues.

He stressed that discussions on the short-term way forward must be framed in the context of a more comprehensive approach that delineates a clear pathway towards a sustainable political settlement.

“Some of the issues on the negotiation table cannot be viewed in isolation. There are sequencing challenges as well as concerns around guarantees for all sides, and these need to be addressed,” said the envoy.

He added that while working towards a shared vision for ending the conflict, it is also essential to break it down into concrete, actionable steps in order to avert potential challenges and delays in implementation.

“Ultimately any set of steps should be geared towards facilitating an inclusive Yemeni-led process under UN auspices for sustainably resolving the conflict,” he said.

‘Unnecessary’ aid impediments

This year, some 21.6 million Yemenis will need humanitarian assistance and protection services, UN relief chief Martin Griffiths told the Council.

He said “unnecessary and unhelpful access impediments” remain a major obstacle to aid delivery there, and are among the worst in the world.

“Last year, humanitarian partners, agencies, reported more than 3,300 access incidents. That’s the equivalent of almost 10 a day. And collectively, these incidents…affected the provision of assistance to more than five million people,” said Mr. Griffiths.

Restrictions affecting women

Bureaucratic barriers, such as restrictions on humanitarian movements, and delays in approving visas or work permits, were the most frequently reported constraints.

Humanitarians also have to cope with attempted interference, which Mr. Griffiths said is “prevalent at every stage in aid delivery”, and is also particularly severe in areas under Houthi control.

He expressed concern about the imposition of strict mahram requirements, again primarily in areas controlled by the Houthis, which prevent Yemeni women aid workers from travelling without a male guardian.

“They impede effective programme delivery by forcing delays or even suspensions of critical missions and programmes. And they are increasingly severing our access to Yemen’s most vulnerable people - women and girls,” said Mr. Griffiths.

Appeal for access

Humanitarian operations have also been hampered by security concerns. Last year, aid agencies reported almost 150 incidents of violence against their personnel, mainly in Government-controlled areas.

“Two UN staff remain detained in Sana’a after 14 months, and another five are still missing after being kidnapped in Abyan almost a year ago,” he added.

Mr. Griffiths appealed to the parties to facilitate safe, rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access, and to ensure aid workers and assets are protected, in line with international humanitarian law.

Saudi Arabia asks UN to designate Houthis terrorist group as Yemen peace talks stall

Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Abdulaziz al-Wasil on Monday called on the Security Council to designate the Houthis as a terrorist organization as the Iran-backed group continues “to stall and reject peaceful solutions.”

The Security Council must “take more stringent measures” against the Houthis, adding that their designation as a terrorist group has become an urgent matter.

Saudi Arabia has not seen any real desire from the Houthis to end the conflict in Yemen and reach a comprehensive political solution, he said during the meeting.

A seat at the negotiating table: How women are building peace in Yemen

Peace is not just the absence of conflict but dismantling the structures that contribute to gender-based violence.

Gender inequality in Yemen did not begin with the conflict. In 2021, the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap index ranked Yemen second only to Afghanistan as the country making the least progress towards gender equality.

The UN facilitated peace negotiations have adhered to a two party structure that prioritises mediation between the Presidential council, led by Rashad al-Alimi, and the Houthi rebel movement.

Despite the often violent opposition to women’s rights activism, they are already very active in peacebuilding efforts, particularly at the local level, and many women have been campaigning for greater representation in negotiations.

At the international level, efforts to increase women’s representation in the peace process have had varying levels of success and impact. The UN supported Yemeni Women’s Pact for Peace and Security initiative aims to “build women’s leadership, increase participation and inclusion in negotiations” and is used as an advisory board to support the Office of the UN Special Envoy.

… the Peace Track Initiative, alongside the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, held a meeting of Yemeni women from diverse backgrounds to develop their own Feminist Peace Roadmap. A key focus of this meeting was how the international community can support grassroots organisations to build peace.

Their Roadmap emphasised the need for “multi-party peace process(es) in Yemen that are in parallel to each other, localised to address different conflict(s) dynamics, but at the same time, feeds into a comprehensive peace process, that should lead to a transitional period”. The Roadmap also stressed the need for participation quotas of “no less than 30 per cent for women, no less than 20 per cent for youth, 50 per cent for Southerners, 10 per cent for marginalised groups, 10 per cent for disabled persons”.

Despite significant barriers, it is clear that Yemeni women are already an integral part of conflict resolution efforts locally.

Far from being a unique case, the exclusion of women in Yemen’s peace negotiations demonstrates a broader trend of ignoring women’s experiences of insecurity both within conflict and in their everyday lives.

Any peace agreement should be underpinned by gender equality, addressing barriers to women’s full participation in public life. This starts with including the whole of society in formal peace negotiations, with a focus on local, community-based activists. Without this, even if an agreement is reached, peace and security for women in Yemen will be a long way off.

Is US-Saudi Aggression Serious about Truce with Yemen?

The statements of the head of the National Delegation, which he made to Al-Masirah TV, with the arrival of a delegation from the Sultanate of Oman to Sana'a, indicated that there are positive interactions regarding efforts to restore truce in Yemen.

It seems that the rapid return of the delegation of Oman to Sana'a, nearly twenty days after the previous visit, may be an indication of the movement of the suspended issues between Sana'a and the US-Saudi aggression, according to observers.

Mohammad Abdulsalam said that the visit of the Omani delegation "comes at this stage as a continuation of the recent meetings, after we conveyed many messages."

Abdulsalam revealed what could be considered ongoing secret talks between Sanaa and the aggression's countries, saying, "There is back and forth with the other parties, and we will inform the leadership and the head of the Supreme Political Council about other points of view."

Abdulsalam added that "the humanitarian situation is at the forefront of the political and negotiating issues," explaining that the intensive visits between Muscat and Sana'a reflect the latter's seriousness in reaching tangible steps.

Head of Sanaa government: Cease-fire depends on implementation of Sanaa conditions

Head of Sanaa government, Dr. Abdulaziz bin Habtoor, said on Wednesday that the main goal of the Saudi-led coalition forces from stopping the payment of salaries to employees in the northern and western provinces is to disrupt the coherent home front.

Dr. bin Habtoor, during his participation today in the first expanded consultative meeting of the academics of Sanaa University, reviewed a number of data related to the aggressive war, the siege imposed on the Yemeni people, and their real declared and unannounced goals.

He confirmed that “Sanaa will accept the issue of a cease-fire and that peace would prevail in Yemen in the event that the ten conditions that it demanded in Kuwait, Stockholm, Oman, and also in the south of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are fulfilled, which represent demands for all the people of Yemen and were not personal or private demands, or a request for prestige or something like that.”

“We told them that the main rule is a complete and comprehensive declaration of a cease-fire, and then the opening of land, air and sea ports, and thirdly paying the employees’ salaries that we do not want as charity, not from the billions that are with Saudi Arabia or with the Sheikhdom of the UAE, but we want it from the oil and gas revenues that exist in our country,” Dr. bin Habtoor explained.

A diplomatic source in Sana'a revealed, on Wednesday, what the #Omani delegation said, which visited the capital for the second time in less than two weeks, saying that it aims to mediate to stop Sana'a forces targeting oil ports, reaffirming Sana 'a's adherence to its conditions for extending the armistice. The source explained that Sana'a is under widespread international pressure on Sana'a to allow the resumption of the export of Yemeni oil, stressing that Sana'a "adheres to its conditions in paying the salaries of all employees and lifting the blockade and the air embargo in return for resuming oil pumping," according to Al-Mayadeen channel. He pointed out that the Omani mediation is making unremitting efforts to bring together points of view on the humanitarian issue, and is focused on renewing the armistice, considering that the UN envoy's talk about working on a political settlement is surprising, and that he “sells and markets illusions to the Yemenis and the world by talking about baseless facts about what is happening during the talks.” ". @OSE_Yemen

He reaffirmed that “the payment of salaries, the freedom to travel, and the entry of oil derivatives are natural rights and cutting or preventing them and restricting their access are war crimes,” noting that “the Saudi coalition has made cutting salaries, the blockade , and the air embargo negotiating and bartering papers in the military file.” Regarding the ongoing talks on the humanitarian file, the source in Sana'a said, "They have stalled with the Saudi coalition's intransigence in making concessions," considering that "the continuation of the cessation of Yemeni cross-border military operations despite the end of the armistice encouraged the war coalition to persist."

In recent years, Saudi authorities’ ongoing crackdown on dissenting voices has only increased in scope and scale. Human rights activists, writers, academics, and intellectual reformers in Saudi Arabia are increasingly targeted and subjected to harassment, smear campaigns, surveillance, arbitrary detention, torture, and enforced disappearances. Saudi authorities should immediately end any abusive practices. Accountability efforts are also critical to achieving justice for victims.

News of secret executions by Saudi regime inside its prisons

The European Saudi Organization for Human Rights said it received intersecting information from several sources that confirmed secret executions in prisons, without publishing an official statement as usual.

The organization said in a statement that the information indicated that detainees in different prisons, including Tabuk prison, accused of drug-related crimes, were executed, and distributed among several nationalities.

On December 29, 2022, Muhammad Moqbel al-Wasel and Shaja’a Salah Jamil, who were detained in Saudi Arabia, called their families in Yemen. They informed them that they were in the execution arena and will be executed.

Court proceedings reveal MBS paid Trump “millions in the past two years”: Human rights group

DAWN calls for DOJ probe after revelation that MBS owns nearly all of Trump-partnered LIV Golf

Ahuman rights organization founded by slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi is calling on Congress and the Justice Department to investigate former President Donald Trump's business deals with a controversial golf company owned by the Saudi Arabian government and controlled by Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman.

Nonprofit Democracy for the Arab World Now said LIV Golf, a tournament franchise and PGA Golf rival, paid Trump-owned golf resorts "unknown millions of dollars" to host events. Recent court proceedings revealed that Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund -- chaired by bin Salman -- owns 93% of LIV Golf, and pays "100 percent of the costs associated with the events."

Statement from President JoeBiden on the Anniversary of Terrorist Attack on the United ArabEmirates

One year ago, in a terrorist attack launched from Yemen, two ballistic missiles and a series of drones targeted civilian sites in the United Arab Emirates. While the UAE’s air defense systems – a hallmark of our decades-long security partnership – shot the missiles out of the sky, three innocent civilians died during this heinous attack.

Today, we remember the lives that were so tragically lost, and we reaffirm the United States’ commitment to the safety and security of the Emirati people. Working in close cooperation with my friend President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the United States will continue to support the UAE as it defends itself against threats – whether from Yemen or anywhere else. We remain steadfast in our pursuit of diplomacy to bring a peaceful end to the war in Yemen, and the United States will continue to support the security of the UAE and our other partners in the Middle East, including providing needed military assistance. Therefore, as we commemorate the tragic events of one year ago, we stand resolute to ensure it cannot happen again.

Facing a Houthi Victory in Yemen, the US Shifts Its Approach

For the United States, the war has been a moral and strategic failure. Not only has the United States enabled the Saudi-led military coalition to commit war crimes, but it has steadily lost influence throughout Yemen and the broader Middle East.

At a congressional hearing last week, U.S. officials lamented the current state of affairs in Yemen, as they reviewed the grim consequences of the war.

U.S. Special Envoy Timothy Lenderking reviewed the extent of Houthi advances, noting that their military forces number in the hundreds of thousands. A significant development, he continued, is that the Houthis have formed closer relations with Iran, which initially had little to do with the conflict. “At the start of the conflict eight years ago,” he said, “Iran was not as close to the Houthis as it has become.”

According to Lenderking, about 40 Iranian advisers are now on the ground in Yemen helping the Houthis develop skills to assemble and launch missiles against both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. “With Iranian help, the Houthis have developed an increasingly precise capability so that they can launch complex attacks,” he said.

A major turning point in the war came earlier this year when the Houthis were on the verge of a military victory in Marib

“The Houthis have won the war in Yemen,” Bruce Riedel, a former CIA analyst, reported at the time for the Brookings Institution, where he has been writing about the war as a senior fellow.

Within this context, U.S. officials threw their support behind the UN-brokered truce, which required an end to cross-border attacks. With both sides taking steps to reduce hostilities, U.S. officials began framing the truce as a basis for ending the war.

“The truce reflects the balance of power on the ground,” Riedel wrote in April, shortly after the truce went into effect. The Houthis “control Sanaa and most of northern Yemen; they are on balance the victors.”

It remains unclear whether the Biden administration has been using the truce to buy time for the Saudi-led coalition or establish a foundation for ending the war. Reportedly, the administration has been reconsidering its ban on sales of offensive weapons to Saudi Arabia. Its sense of betrayal by the Saudi regime over an alleged deal on oil production may stall future cooperation, however.

Congressional opposition to more U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia may tie the administration’s hands.

U.S. is out of Afghanistan; involvement in Yemen is reduced but continues

So, under Biden, the U.S. has reduced its military assistance to the conflict and has tried to negotiate a diplomatic solution, but it has not entirely cut off intelligence and military supplies to Saudi Arabia.

Even though the U.S. exit from Afghanistan would merit a Promise Kept on its own, that campaign pledge was also tied to other wars in the Middle East. Yemen's war continues, albeit at a lower intensity.

On balance, we continue to rate the promise In the Works.

Turns out ‘rethink’ was a threat not a promise in US-Saudi spat

Once the midterms were over, all mention of holding MBS accountable disappeared, and in fact Biden now seems to be catering to him.

The Biden administration has failed to follow through on any of its threats to hold Saudi Arabia accountable, and according to a new report they have no intention of imposing any costs on their government.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the administration was dropping its threats against the kingdom that it made in response to Riyadh’s role in pushing through the OPEC+ oil production cut in October. The White House’s anger over the cut had already cooled shortly after the midterm elections, and since then the administration has been only too quick to cater to Saudi requests.

Under Biden, the U.S. not only doesn’t use its leverage to pressure Saudi Arabia to change its behavior, but it also applies pressure on members of Congress to satisfy the Saudis. Far from “recalibrating” the relationship with Saudi Arabia, the U.S. reliably gives in to Saudi pressure and does nothing to respond even when their government acts directly against U.S. interests.

The administration ended up taking the path of least resistance and allowed Saudi Arabia to get away with doing whatever it wanted. Biden already signaled with his visit last summer that the Saudi government could act with impunity, and the climbdown in the last few months has confirmed that the U.S. will never penalize its Saudi client for anything.

A conveniently timed Saudi warning of an “imminent” Iranian attack in November led to increased U.S.-Saudi cooperation in the weeks after the dispute over the production cut. The attack never took place, and it is possible that there was never going to be one, but the warning served to distract the administration from its earlier disagreements with the Saudi government.

Administration officials now boast that a U.S. show of force in the region prevented the attack.

Unfortunately, the Saudi government can rest assured that it has nothing to fear from Congress or the Biden administration. No matter what anyone in Washington may say against the Saudi government’s many abuses and war crimes, there are never any practical consequences.

Empty threats of punishment have only made the crown prince even more arrogant and contemptuous of the U.S. as our officials hasten to “reassure” him every time he undermines American interests.

The Westminster Accounts

Over £183 million of outside funds has flowed into this parliament alone, with no way of fully understanding who’s getting what, from whom, and why. Until now. This is the story of the money flowing into our politics, hidden in plain sight

Why this story?

More money flows into the UK parliament from outside sources than in MPs’ salaries. Millions are channelled through informal groupings that can influence policy in the interests of businesses and foreign governments – and could be infiltrated by spies. Some MPs are incorruptible; others are credulous at best. One has acquired the nickname “Airmiles”. This matters because the engine room of British democracy has rules and systems to enforce transparency, but they’re not working as they should. They are being twisted out of shape, and why we’re inviting the public to help us explore the Westminster Accounts database compiled by Tortoise and Sky News to shine a powerful new searchlight on money in British politics.

How we got here

Exactly how much money is sluicing through Westminster, and where does it come from? That was the question we asked ourselves last spring. We didn’t expect it to take nearly a year to start getting to the answer, but finally we got one: £183 million since the start of this Parliament.

Whether through default or design, the records of financial transactions from donors and companies to British politicians – essentially, the records of who is funding our politics – is a warren of data; spread across different websites and platforms, published online, in print, in PDFs and spreadsheets, in formats that can’t be compared or analysed easily.

It is only through teaming up with Sky and creating this tool that we have managed to start piecing together where, why and how all this money flows through Parliament.

When the right to inform is criminalized and guilt reversed in France

In recent decades, in the land of human rights, arms export orders have continued to grow. In 2021, France recorded its 3rd highest historical level of order intake.

Among its best clients are the Gulf countries, in particular Saudi Arabia, a medieval monarchy.

We remember that the journalistic organization Disclose had published a classified document, written in October 2018 by the Directorate of Army Security for President Macron and the main ministers. The document published by Disclose provided precise information on the use of French weapons by Saudi Arabia in Yemen, including tanks, missiles and laser guidance systems. This document provided proof of the lies of many French leaders regarding the use of French weapons in war crimes in Yemen.

Unsurprisingly, a few days after the publication of the report by Disclose, the General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI) had summoned the three journalists involved in the dissemination of the document for questioning. The DGSI had notified the "defendants" that an investigation was being opened under the "terrorism and attacks on national security" laws. Just that ! At the time, some twenty non-governmental organizations and journalists' unions as well as the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) denounced this unacceptable attack on press freedom.

As Disclose wrote: “This deprives Disclose journalists of the protections guaranteed by the law of July 29, 1881 on the freedom of the press. The police sought to compel them to identify their source.” “The wording of the questions had the sole purpose of violating fundamental protections of the right of the press to secrecy of sources, an essential element of freedom of the press.” "Before exercising their right to silence, Mathias Destal and Geoffrey Livolsi therefore told the investigators that they were acting in their mission to inform the public."

However, in its statement, Disclose noted: “The confidential documents revealed by Disclose and its partners are of major public interest. That of bringing to the attention of citizens and their representatives what the government wanted to hide. They make citizens and their representatives aware of what the government has sought to conceal. Namely information essential to the conduct of a balanced debate on the arms contracts which bind France to the countries accused of war crimes.

Obviously, these methods of intimidating the French State are part of the enterprise of "journalistic repression" carried out by the main imperialist powers with a view to criminalizing the action of alerting the population and of freedom of information.

U.S. Navy Intercepts More Than 2,000 Assault Rifles Shipped from Iran

U.S. naval forces intercepted a fishing vessel in the Gulf of Oman, Jan. 6, and discovered it smuggling 2,116 AK-47 assault rifles while transiting international waters along a maritime route from Iran to Yemen.

A U.S. Navy boarding team from patrol coastal ship USS Chinook (PC 9) initially discovered and seized the weapons with support from USS Monsoon (PC 4) and guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans (DDG 68). The intercepted vessel, which was sailing on a route historically used to traffic illicit cargo to the Houthis in Yemen, was crewed by six Yemeni nationals.

The direct or indirect supply, sale or transfer of weapons to the Houthis violates U.N. Security Council Resolution 2216 and international law. The transfer of the vessel and its crew for repatriation is in progress.

“This shipment is part of a continued pattern of destabilizing activity from Iran,” said Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, U.S. 5th Fleet and Combined Maritime Forces. “These threats have our attention. We remain vigilant in detecting any maritime activity that impedes freedom of navigation or compromises regional security.”

Investigation exposes the use of Swiss arms in war zones

Every year, Switzerland exports military equipment worth several hundred million francs. Although Swiss law bans arms deliveries to countries at war, Swiss weapons have been found in conflict zones in Afghanistan and Yemen, as a new media investigation reveals.

Exports of Swiss military equipment are subject to a range of restrictionsExternal link to prevent Swiss-made arms resulting in human rights violations. Swiss law bans the sale of arms to countries in conflict, and the destination countries for weapons must promise not to re-export them.

However, a new joint investigationExternal link has revealed the illegal presence of Swiss military equipment in war zones in Afghanistan and Yemen and its use against civilians. In cooperation with the Netherlands-based NGO Lighthouse Reports, around ten journalists from the Swiss public broadcaster units SRF and RTS and the NZZ am Sonntag newspaper analysed hundreds of videos and photos accessible on the internet. These were then corroborated on the ground.

The investigation also confirmed the use of Swiss arms by Saudi Arabian forces against Houthi rebels in YemenExternal link. To confirm this, the journalists researched images of a Saudi navy operation where at least three of the soldiers filmed were carrying Sig Sauer 551 assault rifles. These weapons, manufactured in canton Schaffhausen in northeast Switzerland, “bear several very distinctive features”, RTS reveals.

The team of journalists was also able to confirm that these images were shot on the Hanish archipelago, a Yemeni territory that is considered strategic.

“There is detailed evidence… of Swiss arms being used in an operation in Yemen that has an impact on civilian life,” Leone Hadavi of Lighthouse Reports tells RTS

In 2018, the German-language newspaper Blick warned about the use of Swiss arms in this war, but the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), which is responsible for monitoring armaments exports, felt that the accusations were not convincing enough, RTS reports.

SECO confirmed to RTS that 106 assault rifles had been exported to Saudi Arabia, as well as 300 machine guns.

PM: Saudi-Led Occupiers Control All of Yemen’s Oil Fields, Natural Reserves

Yemen’s [Sanaa gov.] Prime Minister Abdulaziz bin Habtoor said Saudi forces and their allied militants are in control of oil fields and natural reserves in Yemen and are fully liable for the ongoing miseries in the war-wracked Arab country.

Bin Habtoor stated that the Sana’a-based government only receives 7% of the overall natural resources revenues, Al-Masirah television network reported.

He noted Yemeni officials have “implemented reforms in order to fight corruption”, adding that the High Anti-Corruption Commission has worked well in this regard despite considerable efforts by the Riyadh regime and its allies to shut down Yemeni institutions and organizations.

Back on July 2 last year, Habtoor said Washington was aggressively seeking to establish control over energy reserves and ports in Yemen’s Eastern provinces of Hadhramaut and Al-Mahrah and loot them.

Yemen's government raises customs exchange rate by 50 percent

Yemen's government, which controls only the southern part of the country, has raised the US dollar exchange rate to calculate customs duties on non-essential imports by 50 percent.

The decision applies only to south Yemen, which the government controls, including the port city of Aden. The country's main entry point for commodities, Hodeidah port, is held by the Houthi movement, which has a different exchange system.

Yemen imports most of its needs

Yemen's Cabinet meeting approved a decision to hike duties to 750 Yemeni riyals from 500 on 8 January, a document reviewed by Reuters showed.

The amended rate for customs is still far below the current exchange rate of 1,250 riyals to the dollar in Aden

Government in impoverished Yemen approves sharp hike in fuel prices

The government’s Supreme Economic Council approved an increase that raised the price of a litre of gasoline from 150 Yemeni riyals (US$0.60) to 487 riyals (approximately US$2) in the central province of Marib.

Yemen’s government has approved the tripling of gasoline prices in Marib province, in what will likely place a heavy burden on an already impoverished population.

The government’s Supreme Economic Council approved an increase that raised the price of a litre of the fuel from 150 Yemeni riyals (US$0.60) to 487 riyals (approximately US$2) in the central province, Arabi 21 reported on Wednesday.

Cooking gas prices were also raised from 2,100 riyals (US$8.39) to 2,400 riyals (US$9.59) per cylinder, the pan-Arab news website said.

Is Yemen bracing for bloody flare-up as Houthis resume hostilities?

The Houthis have shown scant respect for global calls to end hostilities and used the six-month truce to strengthen itself. The war in Yemen could go from bad to worse.

The international community is clinging onto the false hope that the truce in Yemen is salvageable.

But it’s time to face the facts — the Houthis aren’t returning to the negotiation table anytime soon. And even if they did, it wouldn’t be the step toward sustainable peace that Yemen so desperately needs.

But the Houthis are already undoing that and most other progress with a string of devastating attacks on civilians.

Even the UN, which is continuing to advocate a revived truce, has acknowledged that the Houthis are responsible for a host of war crimes in the short time since the truce expired.

Worse, the Houthis have used the truce to strengthen themselves in preparation for resuming fighting with the Yemeni government

But the Houthis are also emerging from the truce strengthened diplomatically. In the six months that the ceasefire was in place, the Saudi-led coalition made significant concessions.

For the past eight years, the war in Yemen has been low on the world’s priority list. Maybe now that the Houthis are threatening attacks on global shipping operations that could cause hikes in oil prices worldwide, the international community will take necessary action to end the war before the Houthis’ next gruesome attack – by Emily Milliken, Senior Vice President and Lead Analyst at Askari Associates, LLC, a Middle East-focused defence and intelligence consultancy firm

Iranian military support for Houthis hinders Omani mediation in Yemen

The supply of arms is a very negative signal as far as Oman's mediation is concerned. According to observers, the frequency of arms smuggling between Iran and the Houthi militia is a sign that there is no real will to seek peace. The rebels who staged a coup in 2014 that started the war would not be willing to end it, at least at this stage of the conflict. However, observers themselves point the finger directly at Iran. They believe it is Iran that is encouraging the Houthis to continue fighting rather than advocating a peaceful solution.

But unknowns surround all actors in the conflict. Oman's real intentions is one of them. There are two possible tendencies: that the mediation is aimed at ironing out differences and renewing the truce, or that it is aligned with the latest Western moves. Even if both have a common goal, the path would not be the same. If Oman were to go it alone, it would not have international cover, especially from the United States, which has stepped up its activity in Yemen in recent weeks.

‘Heartbreaking’: Football fans spotlight Yemen crisis as footballers exchange kits

Yemen faced-off against Saudi Arabia on Friday, in a game that ended in a 2-0 win for the latter in Iraq. However, when a substitution was made, the two were seen exchanging a shin guard in what was described as one of the most upsetting scenes of the tournament.

Social media users poured their frustration online as the scene sparked a wave of emotions, with many pointing out the lack of humanity that follows the Yemeni crisis.

However, social media users pointed out that footballers should have their own personalised football kits. “And why wasn’t it available to each player based on his own size?,” they asked.

Addressing the dire political conditions in Yemen, one such user said: “The weakness of the state’s policy has had a negative impact on sports.”

The tournament comes as Yemen continues to face dire circumstances as a result of a deadly conflict between the Saudi-backed government and the rebel Houthi movement. While its sporting sector has been hit, the United Nations has described the situation in Yemen as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Yemen zoo struggling to provide animals with space and food

Animals at Sanaa Zoo in Yemen don’t have enough space, and the zoo is struggling to provide them with adequate and sufficient food. In 2019, the zoo had 999 animals. Three years later, there are more than 1900 animals.

“We suffer a lot from the lack of enclosures. The shelters are now full of breeding animals. We suffer from lack of nourishment for the animals,” Fuad Al-Hersh, the zoo director, said.

Film: Socotra Island, Yemen - Step Into Another World | 4K Cinematic

Socotra island is a place most have never heard of. It holds a strange sense of peace and quiet, 400 kilometers off the coast of the Yemeni mainland closer to Somalia. While an extremely tragic civil war has been happening on mainland Yemen since 2014 Socotra has remained safe and largely insulated from the conflict - yet also mostly cut off from rest of the world.
