At least one killed in clashes in Abyan

A citizen was killed on Monday in armed clashes in the center of Jaar city in Abyan province, southern Yemen.

STC warns of demographic change in Al-Mahra

The local leadership of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) in Al-Mahra warned of suspicious movements witnessed by the governorate in the past few years.
During a meeting held in the provincial capital al-Ghaida on Monday, the STC discussed the implications of an increasing influx of arrivals from North Yemen, mostly under the name of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Such suspicious movements reveal an intent to make a demographic change in the population structure of Al-Mahra, the STC said in its meeting.

My comment: The separatist STC had violently expelled people from Northern Yemen at Aden at elsewhere for several times.

The salaries, the government, and the president

Salaries are a right for families, for the sake of their sustenance: for medicines and infant formulas. No one is seeking to have a luxurious thing or to go to an amusement park. Soldiers and their families know no recreational outings.

Making light of the problem of salary suspension is a disaster. The procrastinations from the government and presidency is bad. All these negligence affect the battle, and the government's leadership bears the ultimate responsibility.

The Yemeni army seems to be subjected an economic blockade … and when it is pressing to make appeals for resolving this problem, another problem is created: Suspension of food supply to the soldiers in the frontline.

They (the plotters) want to keep the soldiers thinking about their food instead of the repelling the enemy."

Southern Transitional Council makes new demands to Saudi-led Hadi puppet government in negotiations

The UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) militias have demanded a restructuring of the Saudi-exiled Hadi government forces before it would allow their return to Aden city.

Nasser Al-Khubaji, the head of the STC’s delegation negotiating with the Hadi government, said during a news conference in Aden that “it is important to restructure the two ministries of Defence and the Interior.”

He also stressed the need to combat financial and administrative corruption in Hadi’s government.

The head of the so-called Foreign Affairs Department in the Southern Transitional Council, Mohammed al-Ghaithi, threatened to return the council to the Autonomous Administration of Aden if public institutions and services continue to be disrupted and the economic collapse of the Saudi-occupied regions goes on.

A senior military commander of the pro-government Yemeni forces was killed on Saturday in an explosion in the country's southern port city of Aden, a security official told Xinhua.

The local security official said on condition of anonymity that "a bomb explosion struck a vehicle carrying Colonel Musa Mashdali while he was passing through a main roundabout in the northern entrance of Aden province."

He said the explosion was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and was likely to be detonated by remote control.

Yemen seaport becomes flashpoint in clash between government and UAE

Locals demand Emirati forces leave Balhaf, once an economic lifeline for Yemen but now a military camp for the UAE

A case in point is the Balhaf seaport. Once an economic lifeline for southern Yemen, thanks to its production and export of liquefied natural gas (LNG), the port has for many years been in the hands of the UAE, which converted it into a military camp.

With the war in Yemen now in its seventh year, the governorate of Shabwah - where Balhaf is located - is once again largely in the hands of the internationally recognised government, who recaptured it from Emirati forces in August 2019. Only the Balhaf seaport remains under the control of the Emiratis, a situation which has enraged local Yemeni authorities, eager to see the port once again exporting gas to help jumpstart an economy currently failing to keep vast numbers of Yemenis above the poverty line.

“The gas export facility in Balhaf should be a lifeline for the people in this difficult time, while you [UAE] are turning it from a source of collection and exportation of gas to save the currency and the country’s economy into an assembly of militias to export rebellion," hewrote on Twitter on 24 August.

The issue of the seaport's sovereignty is increasingly becoming a flashpoint - the UAE has in recent weeks attempted to start recruiting new fighters to the military camp and local authorities have responded by arresting them, while also setting up numerous checkpoints along the roads to Balhaf.

While there are fears over the impact of a confrontation between the two forces, locals are eager to see a major source of national income return to Yemeni hands.

Saudi mediation

On Monday, a Saudi delegation met the governor in an attempt to mediate between Bin Adyo and UAE forces - but the outcome has yet to be made public.

A post on the Facebook account of the Shabwah province's media office stated that Bin Adyo discussed with the Saudi delegation "the violations by the Emirati forces in Balhaf and mobilisation of armed militias”.

A source working for the province office told MEE that the Saudis had met the governor on Monday but didn’t reach an agreement, after the Saudis tried to put forward some conditions requested by the Emiratis.

“The governor is the one who is responsible for the province and he is authorised to ask the Emiratis or any other foreign forces to leave the province,” said the

Saudi hands Yemen military camps to local tribes, protesters say

Saudi forces have handed over the camps they have evacuated in Yemen to tribal leaders who are loyal to the kingdom but have close ties with southern separatists backed by the UAE, the head of the media department of the peaceful sit-in committee in Al-Mahra said yesterday.

Salem Al-Mahri added that the Saudi soldiers withdrew and transported heavy weapons from the camps to Al-Ghaydah Airport, which Riyadh turned into a military base years ago.

He continued: "What happened is not a withdrawal, but rather a farce, as no Saudi military personnel left the camps, where they were stationed, to the territory of the kingdom, but they were transferred to Al-Ghaydah Airport instead."

Saudi aims to plunge the area into chaos, he explained, as it not only gave the tribes the camps, but also four-wheel drive vehicles and weapons. The areas should have been handed back to government forces, he added.

Al-Mahri who opposes Riyadh's intervention in Yemen explained that "this withdrawal, even if partial, embodies the climax of the popular struggle that the Mahris have displayed through the peaceful sit-in movement for years against the illegal military presence in our province which is out of the warzone in the country."

The protest movement will continue against the Saudi forces and every foreign presence in the governorate, until they are all expelled, he added.

Yemen is battling hard to regain its usurped gas facility, even though it is on brink of famine

Yemen's government is battling hard to wrest control over its natural gas liquefaction and export facility back from the hands of the UAE forces who have been occupying the facility for years and using it as a detention center for the government's civilian supports and training rogue anti-government militias.

Tensions rose to the surface this week as the governor of Shabwa where the facility is, Mohammed Bin Edei, and the local government are insisting on the evacuation of the facility to allow Yemen to resume exporting liquefied natural gas. The army surrounds the installation, the UAE warplanes conduct threat flights overhead and Saudi mediators are reportedly coming in between.

Yemenis are looking forward to the good news of a UAE end of the occupation of the Yemeni facility which, if operated, will earn Yemen some badly needed revenues and alleviate the Yemeni humanitarian crisis that the whole world, and the UAE among them, sheds tears on.

Arabic press review: Yemen's Aden faces imminent blackouts amid fuel shortages

The Public Electricity Corporation (PEC) in Aden has warned that more than 80 percent of the city’s generator capacity will completely shut down within two days, due to a shortage of fuel for power stations following delays in the arrival of a shipment of oil from Saudi Arabia, The New Khalij reported on Sunday.

"The remaining diesel fuel in the tanks of Aden refineries is sufficient for a period not exceeding two days, which will lead to an increase in the hours of power cuts" and would plunge the city, which was declared as the temporary capital of Yemen, into complete darkness, the PEC said in a statement.

The corporation said that the fuel shortages affected all diesel power plants, which constitute more than 80 percent of Aden's electricity capacity.

Saudi Arabia, which has been leading a military coalition in Yemen against Houthi rebels for more than six years, announced in March that it would provide a grant of oil derivatives to Yemen amounting to 351,304 tonnes of fuel and 909,591 tonnes of diesel, worth $422m, in order to operate more than 80 power stations in the governorates controlled by forces backing the Yemeni government.

The cause of the delay in the arrival of the Saudi fuel shipment was not stated.

Saudi officers arrive in Shabwah

Several Saudi officers on a military plane arrived on Monday at the Balhaf gas facility in Shabwah province, according to sources.

The local sources said that the Saudi officers would lead a mediation between the leadership of the UAE forces and the authorities of the Islah party in the province, in order to evacuate the gas facility.

Political observers considered that Saudi Arabia, whose forces stationed at the airport in Ataq, the capital of Shabwah, is heading for the UAE’s participation in the Balhaf gas facility, similar to sharing influence with Abu Dhabi on the Yemen’s island of Socotra.

On Sunday, tribes from Abyan province, south of Yemen, announced their participation in the open sit-in organized by a number of tribal sheikhs in Shabwah, in front of the Balhaf facility and its evacuation from the Emirati forces, which have been present since the end of 2016.

Yemeni Shabwa governor tells Riyadh: Emirati forces must depart

Shabwa is still witnessing military tension between the UN-recognized government and Emirati-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), with coalition warplanes intensely hovering over the Yemeni southeastern governorate.
A Saudi military mediation arrived in Shabwa on Sunday in a bid to defuse the ongoing tension and prevent looming confrontations.
Later on Sunday, Shabwa governor told a Saudi mediation – at a meeting in a government-held military base near Balhaf – that the Emirati troops need to leave Balhaf gas facility soon, advisor to Shabwa governor said.
"The Saudi mediation panel asked for a two-month respite until certain arrangements are made with Emirates to pull out its troops stationed in the gas facility," Muhsin al-Haj.
Late on Saturday, the Yemeni government army deployed a set of patrols in the vicinity of Balhaf strategic seaport, in Shabwa, which is controlled by Emirati and local troops backed by Abu Dhabi.
Through mediations, the government troops ask for erections recently made inside the facility be removed, and for Emirati-backed troops deployed in Balhaf be withdrawn, a local official told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed on condition of anonymity.
Since Saturday, Emirati warplanes have hovering over Balhaf, "in an attempt to terrify army troops that cordoned the facility in order to protect and recover it from Emirati forces," the governor advisor said.
Despite these sorties, the government troops will not withdraw from the area before the Emirati forces are pulled out of Balhaf facility, he added.
Government security forces arrested a number of STC militiamen that were deployed by Abu Dhabi in the gas facility, to train them and reinforce its forces present in Balhaf, al-Haj said.
The United Arab Emirates, cofounder of the Saudi-led coalition, "widely uses misinformation on its troop withdrawal from Yemen," he added, as these "troops are still there in many Yemeni provinces.. and hundreds of Emirati officers are present in Balhaf facility."
Last Tuesday, Shabwa governor called on the UAE to quit transforming Yemen's resources into rebellion centers.
"Balhaf gas exportation facility should be a lifeline for the people in this hard time," Governor Mohamed Edio said in press release, as export revenues would "rescue the national currency and economy."

Separatist forces capture area in Yemeni gov't-held Seyoun

Hadhrami Elite forces, affiliated to the Southern Transitional Council (STC), on Monday toke control of the first area in the Yemeni government-held eastern Valley of Hadhramout, STC media sources said.
In the last hours, the Emirati-backed Elite forces deployed combating units at a mountain road leading to the strategic town of Amid in Seyoun, the sources added.
The deployment comes one day after Emirati-allied tribal sheikhs opened the mountain road that was blocked six years ago to curb al-Qaeda advance from Mukalla city, Hadhramout provincial capital.
In the meanwhile, the STC sent additional reinforcements to fringes of Amid Valley and revived public committees in Hadhramout, in apparent preparation for a potential military escalation against government troops in Seyoun.
New STC reinforcements (combating vehicles and armed men) arrived at BaRasheed Brigade in Mukalla, local sources said earlier.
These moves seem to be in response to government troops deployment in Balhaf gas facility in Shabwa governorate.

Hedging Saudi bets: Iran looms, Israel beckons, and Taliban cause goosebumps

Some analysts have noted that Saudi Arabia was absent among the Gulf states that helped the United States with evacuations from Afghanistan.

Prince Khalid bin Salman may not have planned it that way but the timing of his visit to Moscow last week and message to Washington resounded loud and clear.

The Saudi deputy defence minister was signalling by not postponing the visit that he was trying to hedge the kingdom’s bets by signing a defence cooperation agreement with Russia as the United States fumbled to evacuate thousands from Afghanistan after Kabul was captured by the Taliban.

Saudi Arabia would have wanted to be seen to be hedging its bets with and without the US debacle. The kingdom, moreover, realizes that Russia will exploit opportunities created by the fiasco but is neither willing nor capable to replace the United States as the Gulf’s security guarantor.

Nevertheless, Saudi Arabia likely wants to capitalize on jitters in the United States as Washington tries to get a grip on what went wrong and come to terms with the fact that the Central Asian country will again be governed by the very religious militants it ousted from power 20 years ago because they allowed Al Qaeda to plan its 9/11 attacks from Afghanistan.

Yet, the willingness to exploit US discomfort may also signal jitters in Riyadh. The US withdrawal raises questions about US reliability when it comes to the defence of the kingdom and the Gulf, undermines confidence in US negotiation of a revival of the Iranian nuclear accord if and when talks start again, and raises the spectre of Afghanistan becoming a battlefield in the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran despite both sides seeking to dial down tension.

Prosecutors did not specify the nature of the secret data, but said the case would involve the Classified Information Processes Act, known as CIPA. Weighing the national security cost of such disclosure, judges use CIPA to prevent unnecessary disclosure of classified information.

US does have troops in Somalia and Yemen, contrary to Psaki and Sullivan

White House press secretary Jen Psaki falsely claimed the United States does not have any troops in Yemen or Somalia while defending the full U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Psaki argued the U.S. would be able to conduct counterterrorism operations in Afghanistan without troops there, based on the examples of Yemen and Somalia, where the U.S. does in fact have troops on the ground, contrary to her claims.

Biden wrote, “A small number of United States military personnel are deployed to Yemen to conduct operations against al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and ISIS.”

Fact check: Psaki claims US doesn't 'have a presence on the ground' in Yemen and Somalia

Facts First: When it comes to Yemen and Somalia, this claim is not quite accurate. The White House said in June that the US does have military personnel in Yemen and, according to the Defense Department, as of June the US had a small presence in Somalia.

In a June 8 letter updating Congress on "deployments of United States Armed Forces," President Joe Biden wrote, "A small number of United States military personnel are deployed to Yemen to conduct operations against al-Qa'ida in the Arabian Peninsula and ISIS."

Biden’s Bizarre ‘Yemen’ Counterfactual

President Biden repeated a strange talking point on Afghanistan during his address today marking the completion of the U.S. military withdrawal. He urged Americans to entertain a hypothetical:

If we’d been attacked on September 11, 2001, from Yemen instead of Afghanistan, would we have ever gone to war in Afghanistan, even though the Taliban controlled Afghanistan in the year 2001?

Well, no. In all likelihood, we’d be in our 20th year of military engagement in Yemen instead. That is, to entertain an added counterfactual, had Yemen also been run at the time by a fanatic group of medieval LARPers unwilling to hand over a very-fledgling AQAP, instead of by President Saleh.

Biden continued, elaborating:

I believe the honest answer is no. That’s because we had no vital interest in Afghanistan other than to prevent an attack on America’s homeland and our friends, and that’s true today.

That’s like arguing against the OBL kill-shot (which, by the way, Biden did) by asking those in the room to ask themselves: “If 9/11 had been engineered by a collective of insurance salesmen from Minsk, would we even be in Abbottabad?”

No. We’d be hunting down anyone with a briefcase in Belarus. The origin of the threat probably wouldn’t, or shouldn’t, change our resolve to eliminate it. Biden is trying to underscore how the U.S. has no inherent interest in Afghanistan or the Taliban, absent the intrusion of history. But intrude it did. There were convincing cases to be made for dramatically reducing, even eliminating, our footprint in Afghanistan. This is not one of them.

'Incomprehensible' Biden mocked for bizarre hypothetical Yemen attack in angry speech

PRESIDENT Joe Biden has been ridiculed after he hypothetically claimed if Yemen had "attacked America" the US would never have gone into Afghanistan as he struggled through an incomprehensible rambling live rant.

But Mr Biden's bizarre claims sparked a furious backlash from media critics and observers.

How the US created a world of endless war

In 2008, many of Barack Obama’s supporters hoped he would bring the global war on terror to a close. Instead, he expanded it – and his successors have done nothing to change course

The enlargement of the “war on terror” through targeted killings, and its extension in space or time, initially received little public scrutiny. The world had reacted with horror when Bush’s national security strategy in 2002 had forthrightly claimed the need to engage in pre-emptive self-defence without any imminent threat. In what sceptics regarded as an absurd oxymoron, Obama’s lawyers now invoked the “elongated imminence” of threats they said justified force. Not only was targeted killing allowed in self-defence, but Obama also asserted the legality of doing it pre-emptively.

Then there was the extraordinary way the law was stretched to cover new terrorist groups, as Obama’s war expanded to new places. Domestic law posed little barrier to targeted killing itself, at least for non-Americans, because in its Authorization for the Use of Military Force, Congress had allowed armed force to be used against any “persons” connected to the September 11 attacks. But it became a burning question whether a rapidly changing al-Qaida and new copycat groups that claimed its name were close enough to those involved in September 11 to earn legalised death. In the landmark March 2009 legal brief, Obama’s lawyers drew on the Bush-era notion of “associated forces” of al-Qaida in order to expand the range of legal targets. It was applied to groups such as the Islamist al-Shabaab outfit in Somalia with few or no ties to al-Qaida, and to individuals in virtue of their membership in this and other far-flung outfits. In 2014, to justify military action against Islamic State without needing to get congressional signoff, Obama’s lawyers deemed Isis to be Osama bin Laden’s “true inheritor”.

Early statements for public consumption absurdly claimed that no collateral damage was being inflicted in these targeted killings, which outside reporting easily contradicted. “We’re exceptionally precise and surgical,” enthused John Brennan, Obama’s chief counter-terrorism adviser, in June 2011. He claimed that US counter-terrorism operations had not involved a single “collateral death” in almost a year “because of the exceptional proficiency and precision of the capabilities we’ve been able to develop”.

That was far from the truth.

Whatever history’s judgment of the merits of the “war on terror”, and the consequences for the world and for itself, the results left the country with a paradox it had not yet faced, and had therefore done nothing to overcome. Through the presidencies of Bush, Obama and Trump, the US could take strides to keep its wars humane. But it did so while entrenching its globalised militarism, as one anti-war candidate then another became an endless-war president. And now one more, alas, seems a prisoner of the script.

Israel’s ‘alarmist claims’ raise the stakes against Iran

Israeli leaders have issued a series of threats against Iran over its nuclear programme, reviving ‘plans’ for action.

Israeli leaders have revived threats against Iran after warning it is just months away from possessing a nuclear weapon.

The United States and Israel have formed a high-level team to tackle the Iran nuclear issue, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced last week after meeting President Joe Biden.

“The immediate follow-up was to form a joint team based on the joint objectives of rolling Iran back into their box and preventing Iran from ever being able to break out a nuclear weapon,” Bennett said.

By now, Tehran enriches uranium up to 60 percent – well above the permitted 3.67 percent and only one step away from the 90 percent required to build an atomic bomb.

Since April, the other contracting parties – China, Germany, France, Britain and Russia – have attempted to get the two sides to return to the deal. However, a fundamental issue hampering negotiations remains, Parsi said.

“On substantial matters, a key stumbling block is the US request for Iran to guarantee it will agree to renegotiate the JCPOA once the US rejoins, and the Iranian demand for a guarantee that the US does not re-quit the deal.”

Diplomatic efforts have stalled over a renewal of the JCPOA, but there are several reasons for this, Parsi said.

“Due to the delay of the Biden administration starting the talks, diplomacy has gotten entangled in the Iranian elections, and it is unclear when the new Iranian government will agree to resume dialogue in Vienna,” he said.

For a long time, the prevailing opinion in Washington was the change in power from moderate President Hassan Rohani to hardliner Ebrahim Raisi would impact the negotiations.

“There are fears that the new conservative Iranian government under Raisi will adopt a tougher stance and even seek to change the format of the talks,” said Parsi.

Indeed, it is now apparent that President Raisi is not planning a swift return to the negotiating table. Rather, Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Hossein Amirabdollahian said last week it would take the new government two or three months to define its position. He assured that Tehran would not flee from the negotiating table.

Saudi-Iranian Rapprochement Is Heading Nowhere

Both sides know their ongoing talks could improve the Middle East—and consolidate Iranian gains across the region.

Iran has expanded its influence in the Middle East, and in that sense it has won the unconventional war it has been fighting. But many of the region’s countries, including Iran itself, are economically miserable. They are either mired in active conflicts, brought low by the effects of wars and sanctions, or like Lebanon are suffering self-imposed financial crises. The Saudis for now have little to gain from acknowledging Iran’s victories and cementing them in place. Until that changes, Iranians, as well as the citizens of other nations stuck in the middle of the Saudi Arabia-Iran rivalry, will continue to lose out.

New Iranian Foreign Minister Seeks Better Relations With Arab Neighbors

Abdollahian's first appearance at the top diplomatic gathering since assuming the post of foreign minister last week was marked by an appeal for regional cooperation. Some Arab leaders appeared to resent Abdollahian's presence, along with his attempt to win over his audience by speaking Arabic.

Abdollahian's Iraqi hosts were openly seeking a diplomatic breakthrough by promoting a thaw in relations between Tehran and its top regional adversaries Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Abdollahian also blamed outside players for regional tensions, apparently alluding to the United States and its allies.

Abdollahian said that Iran continues to insist on achieving peace based on dialogue and regional efforts and that Iran hopes these countries come to the realization that the only way to do that is through mutual confidence of the countries in the region, based on strengthening dialogue and avoiding outside interference.

Deutschland will demokratische, an den Menschenrechten ausgerichtete Werte stärken.

Infrastructure Sharing and Quality of Service for Telecommunication Companies in Yemen

Abstract:

The telecommunication Quality of Service (QoS) is essential to run communication networks efficiently and smoothly. Effective costs and time management represent the most critical challenges globally to improve QoS. Infrastructure sharing in telecommunication companies (ISTC) refers to providing and delivering a high-level QoS to customers efficiently. QoS offered by telecommunication companies is not satisfactory due to the high expense of upgrading to the new technology. This paper focuses on mobile network infrastructure sharing among telecommunication companies in Yemen and improving QoS. A qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews was used to understand more about the role of ISTC in enhancing QoS in these companies. The study found that telecommunication companies in Yemen apply infrastructure sharing at a low level due to the absence of law and security policy for manage network sharing.

Local Economic Councils: A Tool to Improve Business Productivity in Yemen

Executive Summary

Even before the events of 2014 and 2015 that led Yemen into the ongoing civil war, its economy was fragile. The years of hardship that have haunted the country ever since have been devastating. Yemen is now rated as one of the hardest places in the world for businesses to operate and is last or near last in a host of global business competitiveness indexes. From January 25-27,2021 the seventh Development Champions Forum, held virtually, focused on this dire national situation. To help address local economic challenges, the Development Champions discussed the possibility of establishing Local Economic Councils. According to their analysis, between the existing community-level local development committees (which guide targeted, small scale infrastructure investment from development funds such as the Social Fund for Development and the World Bank) and the Supreme Economic Council (which guides sector-led state investment at a national level), a space exists for a governorate-level body to drive development by guiding investment to serve local needs and strengthen ties between the governorates and the private sector.

from Introduction

The devastating results of this economic collapse cannot be overstated. Poverty and hunger are rife.[7] According to UNICEF,[8] “Yemen is the largest humanitarian crisis in the world, with more than 24 million people – some 80 per cent of the population – in need of humanitarian assistance, including more than 12 million children.”

The Development Champions (DCs) are senior Yemeni experts and professionals from various backgrounds, with established expertise in development and economy. The seventh Development Champions Forum (DCF7), held virtually on January 25-27, 2021, discussed how within this clearly dire national situation, businesses still operating in Yemen today face considerable local-level challenges. The forum considered challenges both unique to, and shared by, the country’s various governorates,[9] regarding areas such as vital infrastructure. Roads, power, fuel supplies, water, and access to communications across the country are often either below standard or not functioning at all.[10] Issues raised also included: a lack of skilled workforces and training opportunities; governorates’ lack of decision-making powers required to react to their specific circumstances; inadequate oversight of funds available to invest in local economies; and scarcity of microfinance opportunities.[11]

[Sanaa gov.] Yemen FM: IMF Loan to Saudi-Backed Govt. Only Prolongs Aggression

Yemen’s foreign minister denounced a decision by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to grant a $650-million loan to Yemen’s former Saudi-backed regime, warning that the financial aid only serves to prolong the years-long war on the impoverished country.

The Foreign Minister in the Yemeni National Salvation Government, Hisham Sharaf Abdullah, made the remarks in a formal protest letter to the IMF’s Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on Monday, presstv reported.

Abdullah said despite the justifications and motives of the IMF, given the financial and administrative corruption of the previous government and the central bank in Aden, it is evident that this loan would not be spent for humanitarian purposes, but would only serve to prolong the aggression.

Int’l Resentment Grows against Houthi Intransigence, Escalation of Violence

Concurring with the start of the new UN special envoy’s work in Yemen, international resentment towards Houthis targeting Saudi infrastructure grew fiercer amid warnings against the dangers of protracting the conflict and the militias refusing to cooperate for a political solution in the war-torn country.

The US Special Envoy for Yemen Tim Lenderking, despite visiting the region seven times since his assignment in February, has failed in achieving any significant breakthrough. He called for a ceasefire and resuming negotiations, but neither has happened so far.

Hoping to lure US public opinion, especially Congress legislators, the Biden administration has adopted a new statement method.

In its latest condemnation of recent Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia, it reminded that more than 70,000 US citizens in the Kingdom are in imminent danger from assaults waged by the Iran-backed militia.

US withdrawal from Afghanistan should not give Iran a free hand in Yemen

Washington bears a responsibility in Yemen considering Iran’s even more aggressive behaviour there and in the entire Arabian Peninsula.

Many events have already unfolded in the region since the US military withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Among them is the Iranian escalation in Yemen and from there the clear targeting of Saudi Arabia. The “Islamic Republic” interpreted the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in its own fashion. Tehran knows Yemen well in the light of its presence there for many years. This was strengthened after the Houthis laid their hands on Sana’a on September 21, 2014, that is, seven years ago.

From Sana’a, the fourth Arab capital to be controlled by Iran, the “Islamic Republic” dominates parts of Yemen and continues its quest to control the city of Marib after it managed, through the Houthis and with the connivance of the United Nations, to seize the port of Hodeidah on the Red Sea. Iran has turned northern Yemen, from the outskirts of Taiz to Hodeidah and Saada, into a mere missile and drone base at a time when the “legitimacy” government, headed by interim President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi, is in a coma and in complete disconnect from events in Yemen.

There is a military stalemate in Yemen. A larger offensive with greater successes and territorial gains for one side has been absent since the Saudi coalition's offensive against Hodeidah in 2018. Smaller offensives, constant mutual attacks and skirmishes killing fighters of both sides and causing victims among the civilian population are constant. The provinces of Hodeidah, Taiz, Al Bayda, Al Dhalea, the district of Nehm in the province of Sanaa, the provinces of Al Jawf, Marib, Hajjah and Saada are particularly affected.

Missile Attack on Saudi Oil Region Foiled: Saudi-Led Coalition

A ballistic missile attack aimed at Saudi Arabia’s oil-rich eastern region was intercepted on Saturday, the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthi group in Yemen said in a statement carried by Saudi state media.

The missile was intercepted over the city of Dammam, according to a source familiar with the matter who declined to be named and social media reports.

The coalition blamed the attack on the Iran-aligned Houthi forces. There was no immediate claim of responsibility in Houthi-run media.

The coalition also said it intercepted and destroyed ballistic missiles heading toward Jazan and Najran, both in the southern part of the country.

65 dead as fighting for Yemen's Marib flares anew

Sixty-five combatants have been killed in fighting after Yemen's Huthi rebels renewed an offensive on Marib, the last government stronghold in the country's oil-rich north, a military official said Thursday.

The Iran-backed rebels attacked pro-government positions south of the strategic city, making progress despite losing dozens of fighters in coalition air strikes.

It was the Huthis' first major offensive on Marib, the key to controlling the region, since June, when 111 fighters on both sides died in three days of clashes.

"Twenty-two pro-government (forces) were killed and 50 others were wounded, while 43 Huthi rebels were also killed in the last 48 hours," a government military official told AFP.

The figures were confirmed by other military and medical sources.

Saudi-led coalition admits to success of Yemeni drone attack

The Saudi-led military coalition has admitted that the Yemeni army's drone strikes against Abha International Airport were not intercepted and have inflicted damages and casualties.

Although the Saudi coalition had claimed at first that the Yemeni army's drone strikes against Abha International Airport had been intercepted, a spokesman for the coalition officially confirmed the loss of life and property as a result of the attack.

He also claimed that a "civilian" plane at the airport had been damaged.

Saudi sources also reported a drone strike against Abha airport this morning, but it was claimed that the drone had been intercepted before hitting its target.

The Saudi news outlets' claim at a time when "yemnews.net" news website cited live flight trackers that flights to the airport had been canceled, indicating the success of the attack.

Saudi TV: Drone attack on airport wounds 8, damages plane

A bomb-laden drone on Tuesday crashed into an airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia, wounding eight people and damaging a civilian plane, Saudi state television reported, the latest assault on the kingdom amid its grinding war in neighboring Yemen.

The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen blamed the assault on Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, saying it was the second such strike on Abha airport in the last 24 hours. An earlier ballistic missile attack scattered shrapnel across the tarmac but caused no casualties. The Houthis did not claim responsibility for the strikes and its military spokesman did not answer calls seeking comment.

Saudi forces said they downed the drone, and that their interception sent fragments flying that punctured small holes in a passenger plane, shattered glass and wounded citizens of Bangladesh, Nepal and India. One Bangladeshi man remained in critical condition, the coalition said, without offering further details about the assault.

RED SEA DRONES: HOW TO COUNTER HOUTHI MARITIME TACTICS

Mariners in the Red Sea have long been threatened by pirates, but they now must deal with a much more modern threat as well: unmanned explosive boats. Since 2017, Houthi forces in Yemen have been perfecting their use of maritime drones — sometimes referred as unmanned surface vehicles, drone boats, or water-borne improvised explosive devices — to carry out attacks against maritime vessels and port facilities in the region. While only one of these attacks to date has led to the loss of lives, others have caused material damage to a number of ships and led to the temporary shutdown of one of Saudi Arabia’s busiest ports.

Fortunately, there are a number of steps that governments and private maritime firms can take to counter the threat of maritime drones before it gets worse. Better intelligence sharing and evasive tactics coupled with proactive measures such as electronic jamming, water cannons, and boat nets can help keep commercial vessels safe as they pass by Yemen.

Open source research based on the same data collection methods used to study aerial drones reveals 24 successful or attempted Houthi maritime drone attacks carried out between January 2017 and June 2021. Tabulating these attacks offers some preliminary generalizations about target and location, while also highlighting the difficulty of making similar generalizations about timing.

The majority of all Houthi maritime drone attacks were directed at commercial shipping vessels such as tankers or freight carriers. Four targeted civilian ports and two targeted oil production and distribution facilities. This makes the total number of attacks against civilian and oil-related targets 16, or two-thirds of the total. These include commercial shipping vessels sailing under different flags, including Yemen’s and Singapore’s, but a majority have been Saudi carriers.

Since the Stockholm Agreement of December 13, 2018, a ceasefire has been in place for Hodeidah. There are no major offensives, but smaller battles are going on and both sides constantly are accusing each other of violating the ceasefire.

Houthis say government, coalition using Mocha port for military purposes

The Ansar Allah group, known as the Houthis, on Friday said Yemen's internationally recognised government and the Saudi-led coalition supporting it are using the Mocha seaport for military purposes.

The head of the group's team in the Redeployment Coordination Committee Hamoud Al-Mawshiki told the UN Mission overseeing a ceasefire in the western province of Hudaydah that delivering weapons through the port could threaten maritime navigation security in the Red Sea, pro-Houthi media outlets reported.

He urged the Mission to deal seriously and strictly with this file.
