Detention of Fuel Ships by US-Saudi Aggression Puts Truce's Extension in Question

[Sanaa president Al Mahsat] stressed that the US-Saudi aggression' detention of fuel ships puts truce in a sensitive situation, pointing out that they are trying through this to exploit the humanitarian side to achieve political gains that it could not achieve in the military battle.

President Al-Mashat stressed the need for the US-Saudi aggression to abide by the provisions of truce and implement all its provisions, leading to more humanitarian and economic remedies to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.

Implementation of humanitarian armistice items in transport field falls short of required level: [Sanaa gov.] Transport Minister

The Minister of Transport, Abdulwahab Yahya Al-Durra, confirmed on Thursday that the implementation of the humanitarian armistice clauses in connection with transport falls short of the required and agreed level, as a result of the aggression coalition manipulating the armistice and its clauses for four months.
The Minister of Transport, in a statement to Saba, said: "Only 70 percent of the air transport sector implemented during the truce is due to the lack of regular and scheduled commercial and civil flights through Sana'a International Airport to Jordan and the Arab Republic of Egypt, according to the truce."

[Aden] Yemeni govt agrees to extend truce: Sources

The Yemeni foreign minister on Tuesday informed the UN special envoy that his government agrees to extend the UN-brokered truce and rejects to discuss any new terms before the Houthi group reopens roads leading to the southwestern city of Taiz, Yemeni sources said on Wednesday.
The Yemeni Leadership Council and government have no objection to the truce extension, but to the proposed discussion of new files during the extended truce, Ahmed Bin Mubarak told Hans Grundberg at meeting with the UN envoy in Aden, the sources told al-Bayan paper.
The government reiterated calls for more international pressures on the Houthis to honor their commitments under the truce deal, particularly the reopening of Taiz roads, according to the sources.

Yemen's [Aden] presidential council chief 'refused to meet UN envoy in Aden'

Rashad Al Alimi's move was to say 'no more concessions' as UN seeks to extend ceasefire with rebels

The head of Yemen's presidential council Rashad Al Alimi refused to meet UN special envoy Hans Grundberg when he visited Aden this week on a regional tour to extend a truce between the government and Houthi rebels, two people close to the eight-member Presidential Leadership Council headed by Mr Alimi told The National.

They said the apparent snub was partially over the UN's failure to convince the Houthi rebels to reopen the roads around the country's third largest city of Taez, which remains besieged.

“The government has so far done more than the Houthis have to keep the truce going, including allowing oil vessels to enter the port of Hodeidah, opening Sanaa airport, and even looking the other way when the Houthis have sent people with illegitimate passports to Cairo and Amman,” one of the sources said.

“The president's refusal to meet Mr Grundberg was his way of saying: no more concessions from our side if the Houthi side will not abide by its end of the bargain.”

Mr Grundberg was instead met by Foreign Minister Ahmad Awad bin Mubarak at the presidential palace in Aden.

Southern Yemen official pins hopes on extending ceasefire

‘Everyone needs the truce’, says Amr Al Bidh of the STC on visit to London this week

A leading official of war-torn Yemen’s southern political movement has said the fragile truce between Houthi rebels and the internationally recognised government must be extended to avoid the world’s worst humanitarian crisis from deteriorating.

On an official visit to London this week, Amr Al Bidh of the Southern Transitional Council said rising energy and food prices brought about by the war in Ukraine were exacerbating an already dire situation on the ground.

“The truce really helped everyone,” he told a briefing on Thursday. “Everyone needs the truce, everyone is exhausted by this war and everyone wants to focus on helping the people helping the economy.”

The STC’s foreign affairs representative also voiced his concern over the rising price “of fuel inside our already collapsing economy”, in a country that is teetering on the brink of famine.

Yemen’s former deputy foreign minister Mustapha Al Noman this month told The National he thought the ceasefire would likely be extended to create more time to negotiate a longer-term solution.

Mr Al Bidh said: “We need to find solutions but the most important thing is that we don’t lose the truce.

“It's not just about the roads in Taez, there are roads on six fronts that need to be opened and we did that unilaterally. But at the same time, we can't just focus on one issue.

“We want to focus on other things, on the people, on how to build institutions and organisations that can make reforms in the financial sector.”

Inclusion in an overall peace process, should it come, is another concern for the STC. The new Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) includes the president of the STC, Maj Gen Aidarous Al Zubaydi, but there are concerns within the southern-based faction over whether their interests will feature in future negotiations.

“The problem with the PLC is that eight people with different agendas is very complicated, it's not that easy,” said Mr Al-Bidh. “We don't have a good history in managing crises in Yemen, especially in the south.

“There should be a joint delegation between the STC and the government to manage the peace process and we want that.”

He said the majority of decisions affecting Yemen had been made without consulting the STC, although his group acknowledged that most of the outcomes were positive. “It’s a good thing for the people, we accept that,” he said. “But we don't accept the way it's done.”

If Yemen maintains its ceasefire this week, peace is on the horizon

In a week's time, this latest phase will be up. It is crucial that it is extended.

Yemen does not have time to waste. It might be a talking point at the highest levels of global diplomacy for now, but that might not be the case for long. There is a risk that humanitarian attention will shift to newer crises, notably the war in Ukraine. As Europe goes through its first interstate conflict since the Second World War, countries that have been mired in violence for years could lose out.

That is why this week is critical. International engagement must remain. Most of all, Yemeni leaders must remember the horrors of the past eight years and work towards sustainable peace, and a continued suppression of violence in the meantime. If all sides can maintain the relative calm of the past few months, peace, unthinkable for so many years, might bec

United Nations Tries to Consolidate and Extend Truce in Yemen

The United Nations and a multilateral grouping known as “the Quint” are seeking to convert a truce in Yemen into a longer-term ceasefire and substantive talks on a permanent settlement to the conflict.

Although the city of Taiz remains largely cut off, the truce has improved the humanitarian situation for many Yemenis.

Some of the truce terms have not been fully implemented, threatening an extension of the agreement beyond August 2.

A collapse of the truce in Yemen would tarnish President Biden’s July visit to Saudi Arabia and his engagement with Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman (MBS).

Mohammad Abdulsalam: Aggression did not deal seriously with truce

The head of the [Sanaa gov.] National Delegation, Mohammad Abdulsalam, confirmed that saying “the truce agreement is clear and announced, and what has been implemented is minimum."
There is some commitment with regard to large-scale operations, but spy and fighter drones did not stop, and carried out a number of raids," he explained.
He added that "artillery shelling, especially on the borders, is still continuing, and sniping operations by the US-Saudi aggression have resulted in casualties, noting that the bombing of warplanes and reconnaissance is big breach of truce."
"32 civilian flights were supposed to be carried out from Sana'a Int. but only 18 of them were carried out, and they will not exceed 20 during the remaining period of the truce," Abdulsalam said.
He pointed out that only one flight departed from Cairo Airport to Sana'a Int. Airport, stressing that this is also a major violation of the truce, revealing the refusal of the US-Saudi aggression to bring fuel for planes to Sana'a and schedule flights.
He stated that it was agreed that 36 ships would enter the port of Hodeidah, but only 24 ships entered, only three of them were in custody, and some ships were delayed for 21 days.

PRESS RELEASE ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE TRUCE AND PROSPECTS OF ITS RENEWAL

The UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg has intensified his engagements with the parties to support the implementation of all elements of the truce, and to explore possibilities for an expanded and extended truce beyond 2 August. “An extended and expanded truce will increase the benefits to the Yemeni people. It will also provide a platform to build more confidence between the parties and start serious discussions on economic priorities, particularly on revenues and salaries, as well as security priorities, including a ceasefire. Ultimately, the aim is to move toward a political settlement that comprehensively ends the conflict”, Mr. Grundberg said.

Mr. Grundberg noted that thanks to the continued commitment of the parties, the truce has largely held for almost four months, marking the longest period of relative calm in more than seven years and a significant decrease in the number of civilian casualties.

At the outset of the negotiations, both parties put forward proposals to open roads in Taiz and other governorates, a positive sign of their willingness to engage in the talks. The latest UN proposal included three roads put forward by Ansar Allah and one advocated for by civil society. The Government of Yemen accepted this proposal but Ansar Allah did not accept it. Recently, the parties have also announced their intention to open some roads unilaterally.

“Unilateral actions alone are not enough to ensure the safe and sustainable passage of civilians along roads that cross frontlines under the control of different parties, said Mr. Grundberg. “The parties need to negotiate, coordinate and communicate with each other. I will not stop pursuing my efforts to bring the parties closer together to reach agreement to sustainably and safely open key roads in Taiz and other governorates. This will remain a priority for this truce period and any future extension of it.”

The truce stipulated that 36 fuel ships should enter Hudaydah during the four-month period. So far, between 2 April and 21 July, 26 fuel ships entered Hudaydah port carrying 720,270 metric tons of fuel derivatives. More fuel ships are under process. During the whole year of 2021, 23 fuel ships carrying less than 470,000 metric tons entered Hudaydah port.

“Moving away from seven years of war to a state of relative calm will not be without challenges, and there have been some shortcomings in fully implementing the elements of the truce. Nevertheless, the truce has been transformational for Yemen. It has made a tangible difference to people’s lives. The Yemeni people and the international community want and expect the truce to be fully implemented, renewed and strengthened. I hope the parties will engage constructively with my efforts and recognise the gains that an extended and expanded truce can deliver to Yemeni people. They must rise to the occasion and not miss this opportunity", Mr. Grundberg said.

Shameful Briefing By “Hans” Before The UN Regarding The Armistice In Yemen

In a shameful and fragile briefing by the UN envoy in Yemen, Hans Grundberg, regarding the humanitarian and military truce in Yemen, Hans’ statement revealed the extent to which the United Nations and the Security Council have manipulated the standards of international and humanitarian laws, norms and charters in a biased way.

Hans is attempting to raise media attention before the United Nations and the world, while he did not bring anything new except for the intuitions that everyone knows and words on paper that were not applied in reality. In fact, Yemen is still suffering greatly as a result of the siege and aggression by the forces of the coalition of aggression and their mercenaries, under the auspices of the United Nations.

Hans pointed out that thanks to the continued commitment of the parties, the armistice largely held for nearly four months, which represented one of the longest periods of relative calm after more than seven years of what he called the ongoing conflict, during which the total number of civilian casualties decreased compared to their numbers before the armistice, Ignoring the statistics that Sanaa showed more than once about the violations of the aggression that have exceeded all expectations.

Hans’ statement also attempted to completely turn a blind eye to the initiatives of the Supreme Political Council and the national delegation regarding opening roads and alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people.

Sanaa reveals new negotiations with Islah Party regarding Taiz roads

Spokesman for the Supreme Council for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Sanaa, Talaat Al-Sharjabi, said on Thursday revealed the start of new negotiations regarding the opening of Taiz roads.

He stressed at the same time that they received local initiatives by personalities and dignitaries, but these initiatives collide with what he described as the “arrogance and stubbornness” of the parties that do not want to open the roads in Taiz.

The Islah factions had obstructed the operation of paving the road by targeting the operation militarily.

Struggling with diplomatic setbacks, US moves to extend Yemen truce

The US special envoy for Yemen has begun a tour that takes him to Saudi Arabia and Jordan to continue Washington's diplomatic efforts to back a United Nation's-mediated truce in Yemen, the US State Department said.

Tim Lenderking "will continue our efforts to help advance peace," the department said in a statement on the trip, which follows US President Joe Biden's visit to the region earlier this month.

Observers told The Arab Weekly that the US administration is seeking to extend Yemen’s truce for six months, in the hope of achieving a significant diplomatic breakthrough in the region. This comes after a series setbacks, the most obvious of which were the disappointing visits of Biden to Israel and Saudi Arabia, during which he failed to achieve a number of planned objectives.

Observers added that Lenderking’s visit to Saudi Arabia aims to convince Riyadh of the need to extend the truce.

What Is the Purpose of Presenting Bin Salman as a Rival to Biden?

Western promotion aims to show Mohammed bin Salman as “a leader”, by claiming that Saudi Arabia “confirmed that increasing oil production is not a matter of emotions” and that bin Salman embarrassed Biden by talking about “American violations of human rights in Abu Ghraib prison and not holding the Israelis accountable for killing the Palestinians Al-Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akela”.

All these lies do not correspond to the facts of the reality of the relations that bind the Saudi regime to the United States.

A quick review of the facts of the overthrow of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan can confirm the fact that Riyadh sided with Washington in the war against Russia.

As soon as Imran Khan refused Western pressure on his government to condemn Russia, he was dramatically and suddenly ousted from the presidency of the Pakistani government. And as Shahbaz Sharif became prime minister, the first thing he announced was thanking Saudi Arabia and the UAE regimes for their assistance in assuming the premiership of Pakistan on the 11th of last April.

Many observers believe that the role of Saudi Arabia and the UAE in overthrowing “Imran Khan” as prime minister of Pakistan was nothing more than a service that Riyadh and Abu Dhabi provided to the US amid the permanent and unconditional dependency that the Saudi and Emirati regimes abide by to Washington.

The news of the polishing of Mohammed bin Salman and granting him the status of being "peer" with the US President, appears to be nothing more than an attempt to “scatter dust in the eyes”, absorbing Russian anger, and preparing public opinion for the normalization relations between the Saudi regime and the Zionist entity.

Biden in the Middle East: No Shame in Wise Strategic Alignments

There was no mention that the summit was held at the invitation of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and was chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia. In the group photo, it went unacknowledged that President Biden and the Saudi Crown Prince stood next to each other, separated only by the displayed crest of the meeting. They were posed to show that they were the two most important statesmen at the event. Yet Biden has downplayed his meetings with the Saudi heir apparent amid the left-wing backlash about the photo showing the two men exchanging a “fist bump” upon their greeting. Neither this photo nor any other of the president and crown prince alone were posted by the White House on Twitter.

Despite its initial desire to “cut and run” from Yemen as in Afghanistan, the Biden administration has not been able to disengage from such a strategic conflict.

And in his meeting with the crown prince last Friday, the White House reported that “Biden reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to help Saudi Arabia protect and defend its territory and people from all external attacks, particularly those launched by the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen.” The Fact Sheet also notes that Saudi Arabia will participate in maritime task forces providing security in the Red Sea, Gulf of Oman, and North Arabian Sea (all menaced by Iran and its proxies) and join the U.S. Fifth Fleet in exercises involving advanced technologies.

Yet, the administration is still trying to maintain an arbitrary, largely nonsensical, and certainly defeatist distinction between offensive and defensive weapons and missions. Perhaps Biden’s team will learn something from the Ukraine war and apply it to their policies involving conflicts elsewhere like Yemen

Biden’s Middle East Trip Was Nothing Short of a Disaster

Desperate to save his domestic agenda, the president damaged his foreign policy.

“I didn’t come here to meet with the crown prince,” Biden said from Jeddah last week. “I came here to meet with the [Gulf Cooperation Council] and nine nations to deal with the security and the needs of the free world, and particularly the United States, and not leave a vacuum here, which was happening as it has in other parts of the world.”

Embracing foreign policy as an attempt to jump-start a presidency mired in domestic discord is practically a cliché at this point—Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump have all done it.

But Biden’s trip to the Middle East was also desperate and built on a gamble. With inflation and high gas prices at home, Biden was making a bet that he could play one of the few cards he had left—welcoming bin Salman back into the international community—in exchange for short- and long-term benefits. It didn’t pay off.

There is an argument that it may yield some productive results in the long run.

But that fist bump also signaled that the administration’s half-hearted effort to freeze out bin Salman over his numerous human rights violations was over; relations between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia had normalized. What credibility Biden had built up on human rights and foreign policy was instantly diminished. If he needed something bad enough—in this case, lower gas prices—then anything can be forgiven.

For Biden, this also points to a political problem. Facing a series of related domestic crises, he had hoped that a trip abroad would fix arguably his most glaring political problem: the high cost of gas. But at the very least, there was hope that it would reassert his status as a leader, something that has taken a hit amid the administration’s near silence in the wake of the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to abortion. But the most prominent image of his trip isn’t the celebration of a new alliance or a deal to increase gas production: It’s a fist bump with a man who the U.S. government found ordered the assassination of a journalist who had been living in America.

Human rights activists urge resumption of Houthi terror designation, Saudi weapons sales

A group representing Yemeni and international civil society organizations met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill last week

A group of activists, led by a Yemeni human rights activist, were on Capitol Hill last week to deliver a message starkly at odds with the approach advocated by many in the human rights community: In order to aid the Yemeni people, the Biden administration should reinstate the Houthis’ terrorist designation and resume offensive weapons sales to the Saudi government.

The group was led by Wesam Basindowah, the president of the Yemeni Coalition of Independent Women, and included human rights and national security attorney and analyst Irina Tsukerman and Manel Msalmi, the president of the European Association for the Defense of Minorities, who also advises members of the European Parliament.

Guantanamo "forever prisoner" Khalid Ahmed Qasim cleared for release after 20 years, hopes for "another life" with his art

A U.S. government review board has cleared one of the longest-held prisoners at Guantanamo Bay for release. The Periodic Review Board said in its July 19 "final determination" that there was no longer sufficient cause to keep Khalid Ahmed Qasim imprisoned at the base.

After spending more than 20 years at the prison camp, Qasim should be released to an as-yet unspecified country "with a strong rehabilitation and reintegration program," the board said.

One of the so-called "forever prisoners" at Guantanamo, Qasim was in his twenties when he arrived in Afghanistan in 2000. It was his very first trip out of his native Yemen. He went, according to statements he and his lawyers have made over the ensuing 20 years, to work providing assistance to people in need.

Energy on the table, Macron hosts Saudi prince for dinner

French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to his presidential palace Thursday for controversial dinner that marks another step in the Saudi leader’s diplomatic rehabilitation -- a move that has drawn harsh criticism in France after the gruesome Saudi killing of U.S.-based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

The visit from the prince of the oil-rich state comes after France and other European nations are seeking to secure sources of energy to lessen their dependence on oil and gas supplies from Russia amid its war on Ukraine. France is also a major weapons and defense supplier to Gulf nations.

This was the second stop — after Greece — of the crown prince’s first official visit to the European Union since Khashoggi’s death.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said Macron could be counted on to raise human rights concerns with the prince, while also seeking to secure energy supplies from elsewhere than Russia.

“Obviously, this isn’t about casting aside our principles. It’s not about calling into question our commitment in favor of human rights. The president will surely have an opportunity to talk about this with Mr. Mohammed bin Salman,” Borne said.

But she added: “In a context where we know that Russia is cutting, is threatening to cut, and is again cutting gas supplies and where we have tensions over energy prices, I think the French would not understand if we didn’t talk to the countries that are the exact producers of energy.”

Nasrallah: Hezbollah cannot be a mediator in Yemen, as we fully support the Yemeni people

Hezbollah cannot play a mediation role as it openly takes sides; the side of the Yemeni people and Ansarullah, Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah said in an exclusive interview on Al-Mayadeen TV on Monday.

Considering that a mediator usually asks for concessions from the parties involved, Sayyed Nasrallah conjectured what concessions could be demanded from Ansarullah.

On the issue of mediation, the Lebanese Resistance leader went on to say that the Iranians stressed that there is nothing that the Yemenis can concede.

My comment: he certainly is right with this. No one siding with any warring party can be a mediator. While the US and the West and even the Saudius and the UAE (within the “Quint” meetings) exactly mime to be peace broker. “there is nothing that the Yemenis can concede” is BS. By “Yemenis” he just meands the Houthi side. In negotiations, all sides are forced to “concede” something. There will be no difference when looking at Yemen. Obviously, the Houthi claim that the siege must be lifted also is going back to themselves. They will have to open the main road leading to Taiz.

Sudan woman faces death by stoning for adultery in first case for a decade

Campaigners say sentence amounts to torture amid fears that country’s new regime is rolling back women’s rights

A woman in Sudan has been sentenced to death by stoning for adultery, the first known case in the country for almost a decade.

Maryam Alsyed Tiyrab, 20, was arrested by police in Sudan’s White Nile state last month.

Tiyrab says she is appealing against the decision. The majority of stoning sentences, which are predominantly against women, are overturned in the high court.

Campaigners worry the sentence is a sign that the military coup in October has emboldened lawmakers to roll back small gains for women’s rights made under the country’s transitional government.

Since the beginning of the Saudi-Emirati aggression on Yemen, Yemeni archaeological and historical sites have been subjected to systematic bombing and destruction by the Saudi-led coalition of aggression, whether in the capital, #Sanaa, or the rest of the other cities. The aggressors in the occupied governorates changed historical landmarks and geography. Also, birds, rare plants, stones, beaches and soil were also stolen from this island. Over those years, Total exercised a monopoly with its partners, and during the period between 2009 and 2014, it adopted the lowest indicators for the sale of Yemeni liquefied gas, as the American “Henry Hope” indicator, with the intention of evading any demands to amend the contractual prices that it agreed upon with the Yemeni government in The nineties of the last century (it approved the price of only $3 per million calories, while it was selling for between $10 and $15).

This fraudulent policy was considered by the Sana’a prosecutor, and instructed the Ministry of Oil in mid-2014 to reserve Yemen’s right to fully compensate Total and its American partners for the quantities sold at prices lower than the Asian and European indicators.

These differences were estimated at $8 billion, in addition to Yemen’s losses resulting from losses of crude oil, liquefied petroleum gas and upstream fees, which the company and its partners deliberately handed over to the American “Hunt” company whose contract in Yemen expired in early 2005, and all its assets were transferred to the government company Safer.

Total has agreed with all the partners in the Yemen Liquefied Gas Company to reproduce, export and market gas.

Nevertheless, Total still controls the sources of liquefied gas, and refuses any supervision of its production operations, amid doubts that it deliberately withdrawn large quantities of gas during the period between 2009 and 2014, after it was found that it had withdrawn more than 8 million tons in 2013. in violation of the agreements and contracts signed with it.

In this context, Hassan Al-Obeidi, head of the Madari Center for Strategic Studies, accused, earlier this month, the French company of “attempting to loot 3 trillion cubic feet of liquefied gas outside the agreements.”

He pointed out that “the company, which acquires 51% of Balhaf’s share in Shabwa, hid these large quantities in its reservoirs and did not announce its abundance.

When the War Ends: Investing in the Digital Transformation of Yemen

My first visit to Yemen was part of a revolutionary digital transformation project. My expertise is in building digital organizations from scratch, but there this time I had hurdles I'd never faced before.

The project has faced immense challenges stemming from Yemen's civil war, which has raged for more than a decade. But with the right partners and technology, HSA Group Yemen has improved our business continuity and security while providing a better future for our Yemeni employees and improving the country's IT infrastructure and knowledge base.

We can’t afford to lose connectivity at our manufacturing facilities, and in a country like Yemen, we can't underestimate the importance of a reliable backup and recovery process. In January 2022, we saw the main telecom center in Al-Hudaydah hit in an airstrike, resulting in an internet outage for the entire country—except for HSA Group. We designed our network to overcome disruptions like these, starting with four leased lines coming from four cities in Yemen. We also receive protection through the reliability and flexibility of our Cisco devices, which allow for easy remote configuration. In the case of the Al-Hudaydah outage, we could quickly reconfigure all our companies in Al-Hudaydah to use the leased lines from other cities.

HSA Group has invested more than USD $3 million in the last two years with Cisco, between Webex, our call centers, and switching, router, and security devices. We plan to invest even more as all plants within HSA Group undergo the replacement process over the next few years.

Yemen: Ancestral Honey Production in Yemen at risk due to impact of conflict and climate change

According to UN figures, there are around 100,000 Yemeni households engaged in beekeeping and dependent on it as their sole source of income. Active frontlines prevent beekeepers from moving around the country to graze their bees. In addition, dozens of beekeepers have reportedly been killed when trying to cross frontlines while grazing their bees or trying to sell their products.

The presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) presents a grave threat to all Yemenis, as there are more than 1 million land mines and improvised explosive devices scattered all over the country, killing and maiming civilians on a daily basis. Being a beekeeper in areas highly impacted by violence means further risk of being targeted by parties to the conflict while grazing bees in places close to active front lines. This situation has forced thousands of beekeepers to desert the honey industry and practice other occupations which require less movement. “I’m forced to stay in my area which is also forcing me to depend on only one season of production and that is not enough to be able to support my children,” said Youssef a beekeeper from Hajja governorate.

To make matters worse, Yemen, like many conflict-affected countries, is disproportionately affected by climate change. Temperature rises in recent years, combined with severe alterations caused to the environment, are disturbing the bees’ ecosystem which is impacting the pollination process.

New UN report on #ISIL & #alQaeda shows #jihad threat persists. Here, I look at the 6 paragraphs specifically on al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (#AQAP) and ISIL-#Yemen. Many important points. But also a few question marks (document)

Where is #AQAP? •Its strongholds are in #Yemen’s Ma’rib, Abyan, Shabwah •Also present in Hadramawt, #Mahra, Jawf Note: It's odd that Bayda’ is omitted from this list, given most of AQAP’s officially claimed ops are in Bayda' (§53 even mentions Bayda ops)

How is #AQAP surviving? •Exploiting #Yemen conflict despite #truce •Embedding with tribes •*Possible* collaboration with Houthis •Money from kidnap, robbery Note: In fact, the truce is an opportunity for AQAP; it can align with militias that do not want to lay down arms

How strong is #AQAP? •A few thousand fighters despite continuing losses Note: This seems too high. It depends on how AQAP is defined. The label is losing meaning. I believe it now falls into 6 categories. Read p.66 of my article in @CTCWP Sentinel.

Is #AQAP an international threat? •Yes. Capability low, but aspiration high •May be enhancing its #maritime op capability •It's AQ’s top propaganda outlet Note: In fact AQAP media is greatly reduced. But the maritime threat is real. See p.73 of this

Is #ISIL-#Yemen still a threat? •Downward trajectory •No recent attacks Note: Be careful here. A small group of ISIL-Yemen (9 men) pledged allegiance to the new caliph in March. It also *claimed* a #suicide operation on 10July, albeit its 1st in nearly 2 years

For an overview of the broader UN report on #ISIL and #alQaeda #terrorism, read this useful thread from @AsfandyarMir

Yemen's Al-Alimi Wages War of 'Patience,' Services; Replaces Polarization with Harmony

Talking about the PLC's achievements in its first 100 days in power may prove difficult given that Yemen remains the captive of war. Moreover, the PLC has been bequeathed a bitter legacy that no council or leader would wish upon themselves.

Many wars are being fought by the PLC. The leading body has launched a war for development and another for services. Sometimes, the PLC also leads a war of “patience” with close allies at meetings.

Al-Alimi and his seven deputies took over the leadership of the PLC with one goal in mind: Transitioning Yemen from war to peace.

It proceeded to hold meetings and began to conduct its work from the interim Yemeni capital, Aden.

Yemenis everywhere began to listen to state addresses delivered by al-Alimi on national and religious occasions. They also communicated with the PLC president directly, bringing back the spirit of the state and some hope.

The PLC was able to emerge with a package of development projects that Saudi Arabia and the UAE pledged to provide and support.

Yemen’s PLC in 100 Days: Overcoming Divisions, Prioritizing the Economy

The Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) has completed 100 days in office, after the historic decision resulting from the Riyadh consultations to hand over power to the Council on April 7.

To date, the PLC is still required to fulfill the great promises it made at the beginning of its term.

The promises included achieving breakthroughs in economic and living conditions, providing services, restoring the state, and achieving peace for Yemenis.

In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, political analyst Fares al-Beil pointed to the mostly positive rhythm the PLC was moving in, adding that if it continues to move in that direction it would be able to go far in making the government present with people’s support.

Moving in the right direction, according to al-Beil, means that the PLC would be able to achieve more in terms of normalizing life in Yemen and recovering basic services in Aden and other liberated regions.

“The PLC’s speech so far appears superior and mature,” al-Beil told Asharq Al-Awsat, adding that the body, in order to remain influential, must take actual steps on the ground and fulfill the clear and specific promises it made.

Stopping the Houthis from establishing another Gaza in Yemen

The Houthis will not accept any political solution in Yemen that does not serve the Iranian expansionist project.

This reality will mean the transformation of a part of Yemen into something like the Gaza Strip. The Islamic Republic succeeded in Gaza when the Muslim Brotherhood, in the form of the Hamas movement, pulled off its mid-June 2007 coup.

The Houthis have made clear what they want, or rather what they do not want. They want their political entity in its capital, Sana’a, which they seized on September 21, 2014 with the complicity of Yemen’s “legitimate” government, represented at the time by former President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi. What they do not want is a political solution that does not recognise their control of a Yemeni swathe of territory that includes not only Sana’a, but also the port of Hodeidah, as well as an enclave in Taiz. They want to rule what was historically the Yemen Arab Republic.

Over time the Houthi political entity has become an Iranian base in the Arabian Peninsula, a base housing missiles and drones. The Houthis have not accepted the extension of the truce and they will not accept it unless it serves their project, which is the Iranian project in Yemen. And it is the only project that is making headway in the country.

I condemn the attack that hit the Zaid Al Moshki residential neighborhood in Taiz that injured 11 boys and girls, mostly under the age of 10. A number of these children are reportedly in critical condition, and one boy has died of his injuries.

The warring parties have obligations under international law to protect civilians. The killing and injuring of children is particularly reprehensible.

I am also especially alarmed that this attack, among other attacks elsewhere in Yemen, took place during the truce. The people of Taiz have suffered immensely through seven years of war, and they, too, need the truce to deliver for them in all its aspects.

Houthis launch attacks as UN calls for truce extension in Yemen

Yemen's Houthi rebel group attacked government-controlled areas on Thursday as the United Nations (UN) urged warring parties to extend the truce in the war-ravaged Arab country.

At least two soldiers of the government troops were killed and five others injured after the Houthi fighters launched several strikes against their bases in the besieged city of Taiz in southwestern Yemen in the past 48 hours, a local military source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

"The Houthis began launching artillery shelling against the troops in an attempt to take over the western part of Taiz," he said.

Since the Stockholm Agreement of December 13, 2018, a ceasefire has been in place for Hodeidah. There are no major offensives, but smaller battles are ongoing and both sides constantly are accusing each other of violating the ceasefire.

Houthi-run terrorist cell dismantled by Joint Forces in west Yemen

The Joint Forces, units loyal to Yemen's internationally recognised government, have accused the Houthi group of running terrorist cells linked with Al-Qaeda to spread chaos in regions controlled by the government.

These cells are looting people on roads and targeting civilians and military personnel, a statement by the forces said.

A cell of six members, all from the districts of Khanfar and Zinjibar in the southern province of Abyan, has been arrested, it said, pointing out that some of its members had worked with Al-Qaeda before they were recruited by the Houthis in 2020.

The leader of the cell is Mahdi Al-Markashi, known as Abu Ali. Its members included former member of Al-Qaeda Awadh Mohammed Joubal, and Hamdi Al-Ozaybi, Mohammed Al-Markashi, Mousa Al-Markashi and Mazen Al-Haddar.

According to their confessions, officials in the Houthi Security and Intelligence Apparatus Faris and Haitham Urayk were running the cell.

Four children killed in mine blast in Houthi-controlled Yemen

Four children were killed Thursday in the Iran-backed Houthi controlled western Yemeni city of Hodeidah after one of them stepped on a landmine, a medical source and a father said Friday.

The source said a group of seven children were walking through an empty lot near the airport of the Red Sea city, an area where mines pose a constant threat to civilians, when tragedy struck on Thursday.

Three of them were killed on the spot while the fourth child died in hospital, he said, adding the victims were aged between 10 and 15.

Film: Artist documents war effects with murals on destroyed homes

Under the theme “Silent Suffering”, artists Alaa Rubel in Yemen paints different artworks on the surface of destroyed buildings in Aden southern Yemen. Murals represents families who left the area and destroyed homes. Unlike other plastic artists who display their works in exhibitions, Rubel chose walls of destroyed houses to paint his drawings. He carefully chooses a humanitarian issue that documents and reflects the suffering of a family while doing his work.

Young Yemeni Artists Make a Call for Peace Amid Civil War

In an art exhibition recently held in Sanaa, young Yemeni artists got a chance to showcase their talents, heal the wounds of the Yemenis' souls, and make an emotional call for peace amid a protracted civil war.

The "Glory of the Country" exhibition brought together over 200 artists across Yemen, who displayed on the canvas their artistic creativity and their love for their long-suffering motherland.

"We have invited around 220 artists, both male and female, from all provinces of Yemen to participate in the exhibition," said Majed Hamdani, one of the exhibition organizers.

The exhibition focuses on three themes. The first is to unveil the suffering of the Yemeni people during the war; the second theme is showcasing Yemeni heritage, tradition and beautiful landscapes; the third is expressing support for the Palestinians and their cause.

A letter from Yemen

Ahmed Jahaf is a graphic designer and artist living in San'a '. He started producing works from the first day of the Saudi attack on Yemen, but now it seems that this war is even more "ignored"

I spend my days watching the news and recording social events such as air raids. I keep making works at night, using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere and Photoshop. I also exhibited prints at the Art the Arms fair in London (2017 and 2019) and recently published a PDF book entitled Art of War , which features my most important projects and works.
