Coalition, Houthis trade blames for stalled prisoner swap amid UN silence

The Saudi-led Coalition on Sunday denied Houthi charges of trying to circumvent a prisoner swap deal brokered by the UN between the Yemeni government and the group last March.
The Iranian-backed Houthi group is to blame for the stalled prisoner swap, spokesman for the Coalition said, as the swap was expected to take place in the last months under a deal reached after marathon talks last March in Amman.
The Houthis are insincere and unwilling to accomplish the prisoner swap deal, Turki al-Maliki added, citing "their persistent obduracy that usually leads any negotiations or understandings with the Yemeni government to impasse.
"We offered for the Houthis to visit their prisoners, but we found no seriousness or honest will from them."

Al-Murtada: Aggression mercenaries thwarted international efforts to make prisoners' swap agreement successful

The head of the [Sanaa gov.] National Committee for Prisoners Affairs, Abdul Qader Al-Murtada, confirmed Saturday that since the beginning of the United Nations Truce, the prisoners file has been virtually frozen, both domestically and internationally.
Al-Murtada told (Saba)" That about six months ago precisely from the beginning of the first truce under the auspices of the United Nations, with great sadness, we witnessed an almost complete stalemate in the prisoners file on both the domestic and international levels, at a time when we had hoped that the armistice period would see a complete breakthrough in this humanitarian file."
He added: "Although we signed an agreement with the parties of the forces of aggression and their mercenaries in March this year, stipulating that an exchange of more than 2,200 prisoners from both sides should take place but for intransigence and obstruction of the aggression mercenaries prevented its execution.

[Aden] Yemeni gov't reiterates readiness for all-for-all prisoner swap with Houthis

The Yemeni UN-recognized government is prepared to exchange prisoners and detainees with the Houthi group, government senior negotiator tweeted on Sunday, on all-for-all basis.
It is improper to abuse the prisoner swap and bargain other issues at the expense of this humanitarian file, Hadi Haij added.
The Houthis "refuse to isolated the prisoner file, and select a specific category of prisoners" for release, he said, reiterating the government's readiness to exchange all the prisoners to avoid selectivity.

UN releases $100 million for underfunded humanitarian crises

United Nations humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths today released US$100 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to boost underfunded humanitarian operations in 11 countries in Africa, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East.

CERF funding helps to fill the gap and address funding imbalances. Today’s allocation will now help scale up humanitarian operations in Yemen ($20 million), South Sudan ($14 million),

Houthis use peace to prepare for new battles: [Aden gov.] Yemeni defense minister

The Houthi group has breached the UN-brokered truce over 8,000 times, the Yemeni defense minister said Tuesday, noting that peace efforts were a chance for the group to take breath and prepare for new battles.
By these breaches, the Houthis "blatantly renege commitment to the truce and seek to hinder international efforts aimed at peace," Gen Muhsin al-Da'eri added

Sanaa is not betting on UN truce to achieve strategic goals: Al-Rowaishan

Deputy prime minister of the Sanaa government for defense and security affairs, Lieutenant-General Jalal Al-Rowaishan, said “Sanaa is not betting on the truce to achieve the strategic goals of the Yemeni people.”

Al-Ruwaishan stressed in a press statement on Tuesday that the acceptance of the truce came to confirm the sincere intention towards peace.

“It is not possible to accept the state of no war and no peace that the Saudi-led coalition is pushing for,” he added.

For his part, Minister of Civil Service and Insurance, Salim Al-Maghlis, indicated that the truce approaching its end and the salary file not be moved despite the presence of the Economic Committee in Muscat and the repeated promises from the United Nations.

Al-Ezzi responds to UN Security Council’s statement

The Deputy Foreign Minister of the [Sanaa] National Salvation Government, Hussein Al-Ezzi, has on Tuesday responded to the UN Security Council’s statement on Yemen, accusing it of prolonging the war in Yemen.

“The Security Council does not listen to our just and logical demands and greatly underestimates the suffering of our besieged people, ” Al-Ezzi said in a tweet on his Twitter account.

He added: “Through its constant alignment with our opponents, the UN security council is destroying the trust and prolonging the war.”

“For the sake of peace, we urge the Security Council to modify its behavior, which is controlled by the US and the Gulf States and try to engage with Sanaa with some respect and balance, ”

Sana'a Gives Last Chance for UN Truce, Unrepeatable Opportunity

Despite US efforts to revive the Yemeni truce and put it back on track, it seems that Sanaa's position is no longer as flexible as before, due to the violations by the United Nations - the sponsor of the truce- of its commitments.

Instead of moving to build confidence between the opposing parties, the discussions and demands were returned to the zero point, while the issue of seizing fuel ships was used as a card to confuse the scene and waste more time without implementing the terms of the truce.

The foregoing, according to Sana'a leaders, reflects an open evasion on the part of the other side, which refuses to take steps that enhance the peace process.

Observers considered that the release of eight ships seized by the Saudi-Emirati coalition, early last month, did not return the truce to the path of safety, and did not encourage Sanaa to deal flexibly with any new international or regional efforts.

In this context, the head of the Sanaa negotiating delegation, Muhammad Abdulsalam, reiterated that the correct implementation of the terms of the truce is to “stop the aggression, lift the siege, and pay the salaries of state employees.”

These demands are consistent with what Sana’a stresses that the last extension of the truce was, and still is “representing a last and unrepeatable opportunity,” bearing in mind that the other parties deliberately circumvented the contents of the last extension, and did not show any intention to implement confidence building steps.

Sources told Al-Akhbar that Sana’a’s position has become more hardened following “the aggression deliberately seizing fuel ships without justification, with the aim of draining time and causing a halt in the implementation of other provisions related to opening new travel destinations, facilitating the entry of fuel ships, and

Releasing Seized Fuel Ships a Scandalous Crime

The media campaign launched by the aggression has finished, leaving a major crime and a major scandal of the silence of the US-Saudi-UAE aggression and the government of the mercenary agent Rashad Al-Alimi.

With the beginning of August, the aggression began preventing fuel ships from reaching the port of Hodeidah, despite the extension of the UN-sponsored truce for two additional months. The Yemen Petroleum Company announced the detention of fuel ships for the electricity in Hodeidah, followed by the detention of petrol, diesel and gas ships. The aggression detained 13 ships, before it announced the release of four of them.

Some officials confirm the evil intentions that the leaders of the aggression still harbor, and their failure to abide by their commitments, agreements, and respect for international and humanitarian covenants, and their perpetration of the crime of siege, relying on Western support, and international silence.

Others demanded the truce end and the start of responding to this crime that should not be tolerated, especially that Yemen was able to respond with a greater blow, whether by missile strikes, drones, or naval forces. The recent military parade showed the progress made in the Yemeni Armed Forces and the levels of readiness in this context, and the weapons displayed in the military parade in Hodeidah (The Promise of the Hereafter).

The Yemeni political and military leadership has put this choice on the table for research and careful study, based on two things:

The first is the fulfillment of the agreements concluded in the temporary truce, which stipulate a cease-fire and allowing the fuel imports through the port of Hodeidah, and movement through Sana’a airport, and aspirations to expand these terms to include an expansion of flights through the airport and the removal of additional restrictions on the port of Hodeidah, in addition to the payment of salaries employees who have been cut off for more than five years.

The second matter is the humanitarian need of the Yemeni people, as it is not possible to remain silent about such serious violations, and to watch the dwindling of the chances of achieving the people’s rights, even if gradually. It is not possible to allow the weakness or decline of the great trust between the people and their leadership.

Do Houthi military parades jeopardise Yemen's fragile truce?

A series of ostentatious Houthi military parades to showcase their weaponry, manpower, and military readiness has concerned the UN and mediating bodies, which are struggling to maintain a ceasefire in Yemen amid renewed fighting.

The Houthis have utilised the period of the UN-sponsored truce to crack down on dissent, redeploy military assets, and expand recruitment and training across northern territories.

They have boldly demonstrated their disinterest in an expanded truce with the PLC or the Saudi-led coalition through a dozen or so military parades displaying new missile capabilities, manpower, and domestic manufacturing of weapons and military vehicles.

A military display by the Houthis outside the port city of Hodeida has raised the most concern among observers, including the UN Mission supervising the implementation of the Stockholm agreement of 2018.

While it is difficult to prove the effectiveness of Houthi recruitment efforts among tribes and the population in general, the propaganda videos and parades appear to demonstrate enhanced capabilities.

The locations chosen for each of the parades sent a clear message to opposing forces.

Houthi military displays of force raise concerns over the potential scale of fighting when the truce ends, but incidents in Taiz have clearly exhibited complete disregard by Houthis for the UN peace track. The Sana’a rebels have failed to comply with UN demands to lift the siege on the city of Taiz since April.

While humanitarian organisations and Western governments have condemned Houthi violations, there has been no coordinated effort to pressure the rebels in apparent efforts to preserve the fragile truce. In addition to targeting civilian areas, Houthis have launched strikes on military camps since late August.

My comment: Not taking into account that both sides violate the truce.

Security Council calls for intensifying efforts to expand Yemen truce

Council members highlighted the tangible benefits of the agreement between the Government and Houthi rebels, now in its sixth month.

They include a 60 per cent reduction in casualties.

Additionally, fuel coming through critical Huydadah port has quadrupled, while commercial flights from the capital, Sana’a, have allowed 21,000 people to receive medical treatment and unite with their families.

The Council called on the parties “to urgently intensify, and be flexible in, the negotiations under the auspices of the UN to agree on an expanded truce that could be translated into a durable ceasefire”.

In addition to stepping up engagement with UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg, the sides were urged to abstain from conditionality and to work towards implementing measures to tackle the economic and financial crises.

“The members of the Security Council welcomed the exceptional measures taken by the Government of Yemen to avert fuel shortages in the Houthi-controlled areas following a Houthi order that affected the established process for clearing fuel ships,” the statement said.

“They called on the Houthis to refrain from such actions in the future and to cooperate with UN-led efforts to identify a durable solution to ensure the flow of fuel.”

The Council has condemned all attacks that threaten to derail the truce, including a deadly Houthi offensive in Taiz late last month. Reiterating that there is no military solution for Yemen, members also condemned the recent military parade in Hudaydah.

They expressed concern over recent instability in the south, the increase in civilian landmine casualties, and the lack of progress on the opening of the roads in Taïz, in line with UN proposals.

Turning to the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, and the continued risk of famine, the Council encouraged donors to fully fund the UN response plan and support the Government’s efforts to stabilize the economy.

Members also reiterated their deep concern over the catastrophic ecological, maritime, and humanitarian risk posed by the decaying Safer oil tanker.

My comment: The phrases about Hudaydah port are odd. There is nothing the Aden government can be lauded for, it’s odd that the Aden government should have anything to influence in this matter.

A Group of Migrants’ Bodies Found Near an Informal Detention Facility in Saudi Territory

On May 12, 2022, people found a group of bodies of Yemeni and Ethiopian migrants piled near an informal detention facility in southern Saudi Arabia. The migrants had crossed the border from northern Yemen into Saudi Arabia the day before, according to those that collected the bodies. A doctor examined the bodies of seven Yemenis found with the group, and the medical report revealed that two of the bodies had gunshot wounds, and the remaining five bodies had marks of torture.

For years, Saudi Arabia has failed to prevent abuses against migrants in its territory and to conduct credible investigations into these abuses. A failure to investigate and prosecute serious abuses committed against migrants by private individuals as well as by public officials would violate Saudi Arabia’s obligations under international law. States should take immediate steps to ensure credible investigations, criminal accountability, and for violations and abuses committed in this horrible incident, Mwatana for Human Rights said in a statement today.

In the context of the armed conflict, Saudi Arabia, as well as other warring parties, have failed to credibly investigate abuses, to punish those responsible, and to provide reparations to victims. Mwatana, and dozens of other rights groups, have called for states at the UN Human Rights Council to create an international, independent criminal accountability mechanism for Yemen.

“This brutal way of treating a group of Ethiopian and Yemeni migrants inside Saudi territory, who were killed and tortured, is one of a series of violations against civilians in the border areas between Yemen and Saudi Arabia,” Radhya Al-Mutawakel, Chairperson of Mwatana for Human Rights, said. “The international community must know that the absence of an independent international criminal accountability mechanism in Yemen is a green light for an unending chain of crimes against civilians.”

A Mwatana team visited the city of Saada and Souk al-Raqo area in northern Yemen between 14 and 18 May 2022 to investigate the incident. Mwatana met with 5 people, including 3 people that transported the bodies from next to the informal detention facility in Saudi Arabia to Souk al-Raqo (Al- Raqo market) in Yemen, which is near the border between the two countries, and two relatives of those who were killed. Mwatana also obtained photos and video of the bodies of the seven Yemeni civilians once the bodies had been gathered in Al-Jumhouri Hospital in Saada.

U.S. Special Envoy for Yemen Lenderking Returns from Travel, Calls on Parties to Prioritize Peace in Yemen

U.S. Special Envoy for Yemen Tim Lenderking returned to Washington on September 14 from travel to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. In his meetings, he found unanimous agreement that the Yemen truce – which is set to expire on October 2 – continues to represent the best opportunity for peace in years and has brought a period of unprecedented calm and hope for Yemenis who have faced years of war and suffering. Further, all counterparts expressed their support for an expanded truce agreement that includes paying civil servants, improving freedom of movement through road openings, moving fuel quickly through the ports, and expanding commercial flights from Sana’a airport.

USA wollen Zivilbevölkerung in Kriegen künftig besser schützen

DRONE DEBT: U.S. REFUSES TO HELP WOUNDED SURVIVOR OF WRONGFUL ATTACK IN YEMEN

Adel Al Manthari was injured in a 2018 drone strike — and now he’s releasing his medical bills. Will it finally shame the U.S. government into helping?

IN MARCH 2018, the U.S. government decided that five Yemeni men were so dangerous that there was only one solution: They needed to die. After a U.S. military commander gave the final sign-off, a missile ripped through their SUV, near the village of Al Uqla, and tossed the car into the air. Three of the men were killed instantly. Another died days later in a local hospital. The only survivor was Adel Al Manthari.

Al Manthari’s body was ravaged. His entire left side was burned. His right hip was fractured and his left hand sustained catastrophic injuries to its blood vessels, nerves, and tendons. Despite multiple surgeries and nine months of medical treatment after the strike, he was permanently disabled. The severe burns left his skin vulnerable to infection, and his body has regularly been covered in bed sores due to his limited mobility.

The U.S. military claimed that Adel Al Manthari and the others in the vehicle were “terrorists” from Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, but independent inquiries said otherwise. There is no evidence to suggest that the United States ever reinvestigated the strike. And every day for the past four years, Al Manthari has paid the price for America’s shoot-first-ask-no-questions-later system of remote warfare. The irreparable damage to his body left Al Manthari unable to walk or work, robbing him of dignity and causing his daughters — ages 8 and 14 at the time of the strike — to drop out of school to help care for him. The psychological impact of the strike has been profound, leaving Al Manthari traumatized and in need of treatment. And the financial impact has been ruinous.

Iran faces US in international court over asset seizure

Iran told the United Nations’ highest court on Monday that Washington’s confiscation of some $2 billion in assets from Iranian state bank accounts to compensate bombing victims was an attempt to destabilize the Iranian government and a violation of international law.

In 2016, Tehran filed a suit at the International Court of Justice after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled money held in Iran’s central bank could be used to compensate the 241 victims of a 1983 bombing of a U.S. military base in Lebanon believed linked to Iran.

Hearings in the case opened Monday in the Hague-based court, starting with Iran’s arguments. The proceedings will continue with opening statements by Washington on Wednesday.

Exclusive: Iran ‘must cooperate’ on nuclear probe, French envoy says

French Ambassador to the US Philippe Etienne tells Al-Monitor that France has spared no effort to reach an agreement in the nuclear talks.

Iran’s latest position in talks to revive the nuclear agreement has taken the process backwards, the French ambassador to the United States told Al-Monitor, adding that Iran “must cooperate” with an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) investigation into Tehran’s undeclared nuclear materials.

“Unfortunately, the last position expressed by Iran brings us backwards, and in particular, establishes links between the JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] and the obligations of Iran under its international commitments,” French Ambassador to the United States Philippe Etienne said in an interview in Washington on Thursday.

“It is not acceptable for us to put pressure on the Vienna agency (IAEA), which is the international actor in charge of these issues, and with which Iran must cooperate,” he added.

IAEA politicized approach to Iran Nuclear deal

The US message to Iran has been quite clear, humor the IAEA once more, and nuclear related sanctions will be lifted, this time.

But although Iran may have been somewhat naive before it is far wiser now. Humoring other parties to the JCPOA or the IAEA would only result in more pedantic word play. Iran has complied with deal even beyond its obligations, since the 2015 signing of the JCPOA, and the IAEA has borne witness to this 15 times no less.

The latest allegations, miraculously floating around now all of a sudden, just before another signing, can only be because that neutral technical agency has become politicized.

JCPOA parties need to show flexibility to revive nuclear deal: United Nations

The spokesman of Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres says an agreement on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal requires “flexibility” from the parties, saying Guterres continues to support the agreement clinched between Iran and the world's powers.

Stéphane Dujarric made the remarks while addressing a press briefing on Monday amid protracted talks to restore the multilateral deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Gulf leaders use the Queen’s funeral as an opportunity to whitewash their appalling human rights records

Protests will take place outside the Embassies of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain in London as Mohammed Bin Salman (MBS), King Hamad AlKhalifa of Bahrain and leaders from the UAE are expected to visit ahead of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth.

For eight years the UK has supported the Saudi-led Coalition’s bombardments in Yemen, through unrestrained arms exports, despite overwhelming evidence of war crimes and a catastrophic humanitarian disaster.

CAAT estimates that the total value of UK arms sales to the Saudi-led Coalition since the beginning of the war is over £23 billion.

It is the first time Mohammed Bin Salman will visit the UK since the shocking murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. The visit comes as Saudi Arabia once again displays its appalling human rights record. The country carried out the largest mass execution in its modern history in March, executing 81 people in one day. Last month two women were sentenced to 34 and 45 years in prison respectively, simply for social media activity.

UAE Regime Uses Prostitution, Sexual Exploitation to Attract Tourists

A spread of prostitution and human trafficking in the UAE was shown in European documentary film called "She is not for sale". The film, which received wide attention in European forums, was shown during an international conference hosted by the University of Florence in Italy.

It unveiled shocking details about the sexual exploitation of women working in massage parlors in the Emirates, confirming the government's leniency with gangs that work without restraint to carry out their crimes.

Euro-Med Monitor at HRC: European countries must stop arms export to conflict parties in Yemen

In a joint statement to the UN Human Rights Council’s 51st session, Euro-Med Monitor and Youth Parliament for SDG said European countries are obligated to stop arms sales to the conflict parties in Yemen under relevant agreements such as The Geneva Conventions, the Arms Trade Treaty, and the EU Common Position, which all prohibit the export of arms that may cause foreseeable violations of international law.

EU Member States of the Human Rights Council must prohibit the export of arms to countries involved in the Yemen conflict, as well as any activities that may prolong the conflict.

Delivering her statement to the Council, Euro-Med Monitor’s Legal Researcher Carma Estetieh said, “Despite international obligations and the overwhelming evidence pointing [to] the direct impact of the arms trade on human rights violations in Yemen, recent reports have found that weapons manufactured in European countries are in the possession of armed groups in Yemen, further fuelling the conflict”.

Iran's supply of deadly mines to Houthis continues to destabilise Yemen, region

Iran has continued to supply internationally banned anti-personnel mines to the Houthis, flouting international conventions and disregarding the devastation they cause to the civilian population, Yemeni officials say.

In addition to supplying the Houthis with anti-personnel mines, Iran has been helping its proxies manufacture mines in Yemen, in a move that is intentionally destabilising Yemen and its neighbours, they added.

Jewish cemetery reconstruction hints at Yemen’s true form

Within the context of these challenges, it is all the more remarkable that Yemenis recently started restoring a 160-year-old Jewish cemetery in Aden. What started as a volunteer effort has now garnered the support of local authorities and Yemeni institutions.

It amounts to a project of interfaith tolerance and embrace in a place where such sentiments have been in short supply. In the last couple of years, Yemen’s Jewish community — one of the world’s most ancient — has disappeared. Most of the remaining few fled to nearby countries after facing persecution and even arrest by the Houthi rebels. Just a century ago, they counted in the tens of thousands and could claim a lineage of almost 3,500 years.

Yemen: Impact of the truce on fuel supply dynamics and fuel price structures using satellite imaginary and price modelling

This report collates and compares fuel price structures in areas under the control of the de-facto authority (DFA) in the north of Yemen (also known as the Houthis) and those under the administrative control of the Internationally Recognized Government of Yemen (IRG). It also examines the differences in fuel price structures in DFA areas when fuel enters directly via Al Hodeidah port compared to when significant volumes are trucked overland from IRG to DFA areas during periods of reduced import activity via Al Hodeidah. The report identifies and analyses overland fuel trucking and distribution routes – specifically routes used to truck fuel from IRG to DFA areas. It uses satellite imagery to examine the use of these trucking and distribution routes and assesses the number of fuel trucks present at key points along these routes, both before and after the UN-brokered truce came into effect on 2 April 2022.

The fuel price analysis in this report considers a number of elements, such as the different cost factors shaping fuel prices for consumers in DFA and IRG areas. The report also distinguishes between the different dynamics surrounding the setting of an ‘official price’ (i.e. the price set by the state-run Yemen Petroleum Company [YPC] for fuel sold at YPC stations or YPC agents) and a ‘commercial rate’ (for fuel sold at privately owned stations). Cost factors include: • the cost of fuel in the international market as purchased by the importer • fuel import taxes and customs • transportation • distribution and operating costs • demurrage.

Other factors include the value of the Yemeni rial in DFA and IRG areas and how it affects the consumer price.

A deeper understanding of fuel price structures across Yemen and their correlation with international price dynamics has enabled the continued development of fuel price scenario estimates for DFA and IRG areas. The scenarios in this report cover different periods throughout the conflict, from February 2019 to July 2022, drawing comparisons between Al Hodeidah port disruption and non-disruption periods. The report also focuses on the impact of the Russian military intervention and continued conflict in Ukraine since February 2022 and the UN-brokered truce from April 2022.

Although the drafting of the report was completed in July 2022, it is important to acknowledge the shift in Al Hodeidah fuel import dynamics at the end of August and beginning of September 2022. The build-up of fuel vessels in the Coalition Holding Area (CHA) and parallel shift in supply and price dynamics in DFA areas that occurred is a notable departure from the smooth entry of fuel via Al Hodeidah and the relative supply and price stability in DFA areas since the establishment of the UN-brokered truce in April 2022. Due to the timing of these events details of the latest Al Hodeidah fuel import standoff are not part of the analysis.

This report builds on previous ACAPS Yemen fuel dynamics analysis from August 2021 and April 2022 which focused on pre-truce periods

If this link does not work, try: https://twitter.com/ACAPSproject/status/1569354461918957568

Short version: when fuel via Hodeidah slows or stops, more goes through Aden. Fuel availability in the north remains more or less unchanged, except to the extent it's rationed by the authorities. GoY takes a cut and Houthis still collect $$$. Prices rise across the country.

Put differently, it's double-taxation & rationing in Sana'a - not shortage - that are most immediately responsible for high fuel prices (and ripple effects felt by all Yemenis). But GoY shouldn't close its eyes to the fact that blocking fuel sets downward spiral in motion.

Reviving brands in Yemen: a view from HSA

HSA, standing for Hayel Saeed Anam, is a huge family conglomerate that originated in Yemen more than 80 years ago, currently employing more than 35,000 people across all its operations. For many, the name HSA wouldn’t be familiar, but they are the group owning Arma company in Egypt, house of brands like Crystal oil and Al Hanem ghee – all are leaders of their categories in the market. They also have a large operation in Saudi Arabia, Africa and many countries around the world. The group embarked on a transformational journey for the business and the brands they own since 2019.

Mohamed Torki, chief marketing officer at HSA group, and a 20 year marketing veteran in Procter and Gamble and Mars in many countries tells the story. “As I started my journey with HSA at the beginning of 2020, I witnessed category leading brands in many segments of the business that didn’t connect with consumers for some time. The war conditions made priorities change, rightly so, to ensure business continuity at the time of crisis,” he added, “but then it was the right time to rebuild these brands’ equities and make them closer to the consumer needs.”

A journey of transformation started to make sure the Yemeni brands are no less than any international competitor in the market. “The marketing fundamentals of how brands grow were applied,” Torki explained. The newly appointed marketing team, together with the existing Yemeni talent, started their step by step journey by ensuring they build a strong foundation of consumer understanding, habit change knowledge, and the aspirations of the Yemeni population.

Yemen’s coffee farmers bid to win over baristas to their heritage beans

Auction in London aims to help rural growers and put ‘birthplace of good coffee’ back on the map for connoisseurs

The beans that have grown across Yemen’s harsh mountain landscapes for more than 600 years have been largely overlooked by modern coffee connoisseurs.

But last month, a group of farmers in ceremonial dress, replete with daggers in their belts, visited a London coffee-roasting firm, bent on restoring Yemen’s status as the birthplace of good coffee.

The farmers brought 28 samples for tasting and, within days, had sold their beans to buyers from Europe, Australia, the Middle East and east Asia at the inaugural National Yemen Coffee Auction.

The online auction was designed to connect the growers of Yemeni’s western mountains directly to traders, rather than selling through a network of exporters that carve off profits.

This comes about 9 months after the UN staff were kidnapped by the terrorist organization in the province under the control of the Saudi-led coalition forces.

Local media quoted “military” sources as saying that the operation to smuggle the five abductees came after the failure of the military campaign carried out by the UAE-backed militias in releasing them and controlling the terrorist organization’s camp in “Wadi Omran” in Abyan.

Al-Qaeda had demanded a ransom of $ 5 million for the release of the kidnapped.

A New Iran Deal Would Empower the Houthis

Iran would receive approximately $275 billion in sanctions relief during the first year of a new nuclear deal and more than $1 trillion by 2030, according to an FDD assessment. If past is prologue, a significant portion of these funds would flow to Iran’s network of terror proxy groups, including the Houthis in Yemen. In the year after the implementation of the original 2015 nuclear accord, Tehran’s military budget increased by 90 percent, enabling the regime to send additional weapons and funding to its proxies throughout the region.

Are the Houthis Willing to Compromise in Yemen?

The Houthis have a poor track record in negotiations. But giving up on negotiating with them isn’t an option.

But many Yemenis remain skeptical about the prospects of peace talks with the Houthis. They often say that the Houthis are not sincere in seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict, given their continued violence and rhetoric against their opponents. The Houthis themselves never claimed any interest in a peace process or a negotiated settlement, nor are they actively seeking to engage in de-escalation efforts. In their public statements and private meetings, the Houthis have reflected a consistent position that has conditioned any peace talks on meeting their demands, such as opening Sanaa airport, which provides them with a comparative advantage should they back out of implementing their side of the deal.

This raises an essential question of whether the Houthis are willing to compromise. The difficulty of achieving an agreement on simple humanitarian measures, such as easing the yearslong siege of the city of Taiz, makes it difficult to be optimistic about their willingness to make concessions on fundamental issues related to power-sharing, governance, and implementing a political system that all Yemenis can endorse.

The Houthi leadership is most likely avoiding a political settlement because any power-sharing agreement will leave a substantial part of their political and intelligence establishment without total control. This also means they stand to lose a significant amount of political and economic power that will not immediately be available to them in a negotiated political settlement. Adding to this, the already existing divisions among the Houthi militia members, especially on the part of the members who do not feel beholden to Iran, have caused internal mistrust that Houthis do not want to expose. These dynamics suggest that Houthis are not entirely ready for a political settlement – By Gerald Feierstein, a former U.S. ambassador to Yemen, and Fatima Abo Alasrar, a nonresident scholar at the Middle East Institute and senior analyst at the Washington Center for Yemeni Studies.

Optimism to End US-Saudi Aggression Diminished, Lack of Commitment to Truce

The Yemeni people are not enthusiastic about the possibility of reaching a permanent cessation of the US-Saudi aggression, due to its lack of commitment to the humanitarian and military truce.

They said that no significant change has been observed in alleviating the suffering, as they live in a “no war and no peace” situation.

Observers say Yemen requires the independence of the decision of all Yemeni forces and components, especially in areas under the control of the aggression through the emergence of a local leadership in those areas, enjoying popular legitimacy and freedom to choose the decision similar to the leaders of the peaceful movement In Al-Mahra.

All the occupied governorates in the south must move forward to reach an agreement with the National Salvation Government in Sana’a away from the dictates of the foreigners in a manner that serves the interests of Yemenis, having good relations with regional and international countries.

Special interview: There is ‘a very strong consensus’ in favor of Yemen truce extension, says US envoy Tim Lenderking

There is a very strong internal and international consensus in favor of extension of the truce in Yemen, with all of the regional countries supporting a peaceful resolution, not a return to war, Timothy Lenderking, the US special envoy for Yemen, has told Arab News.

If the Houthis opt for a military solution, they will be completely isolated, he said during an interview with Arab News in Riyadh, where he arrived on Saturday as part of a diplomatic push to extend a UN-mediated truce in Yemen into a permanent arrangement.

Lenderking is also expected to continue to rally support for UN efforts to raise awareness of the threat posed by the stricken oil storage vessel, Safer, in the Red Sea, and the funding required to address the ticking environmental time bomb.

Lenderking considers the extension an opportunity for the Iran-backed Houthis to show good faith and good will, and respond to the desire of the Yemeni people for peace.

“From what we know after talking to Yemenis inside Yemen and around the world, there is no appetite for a return to war. There is no capacity for anybody to wish to see this happen,” he said.

Deploring the fuel crisis that resulted from the Houthis’ “altering of the standard operating procedures” by which oil supplies move into Yemen, he said: “It created a problem, and immediately produced long gas lines in Sanaa such as we had seen before the truce.”

Washington does not support any bureaucratic procedures that obstruct the movement of oil, Lenderking clarified, adding that free movement of oil without any impediments into Yemen is, for the US, a fundamental and longstanding position.

And what followed that they obtained the technology of drones and ballistic missiles, the challenge facing the settlement, which the United Nations and the international community charted its course, and which is based on a comprehensive agreement to stop the fighting, under the supervision of local and international observers, followed by the formation of a government from all the conflicting parties, which will take over Supervising a transitional phase, during which the constitution and form of the state are agreed upon.

Joe Biden's Nuclear Deal With the Devil

The Israelis are nervous and with good reason. The theocratic regime in Iran has repeatedly vowed to wipe Israel off the map and now it looks like Joe Biden may help them try to achieve that ambition. Why does the West embrace Iran?

One of the most bizarre breaking news headlines being followed were the negotiations between the Western countries and Iran over the restoration of the nuclear agreement. There prevails strange patience, flexibility and fluidity in dealing with a demonic regime that only recognizes murder and physical liquidation.
A tyrannical regime, which has caused millions of sane Iranians to flee their country and migrate to all parts of the world, stands firm with live ammunition against any peaceful demonstrations or demands made by the Iranian people.
The brutality of this regime was not, of course, confined to the Iranian domestic front alone, but it also employs traitors in several Arab countries to carry out its missions against the people and residents of these countries, scuttling any hope for their stability, growth and prosperity.

And the case of Yemen too was no different after the Houthi militias responded to the dictates of the slain Qassem Soleimani and put Yemen into labyrinths with which Yemen has nothing to do with. Iraq is also under the same hegemony, but it has begun to wake up and announce its rejection. Perhaps the Iraqi people, with all their sects, would contribute to cleaning their soil of this filth.
Despite all this horrific record of crimes being perpetrated by the Tehran regime, we see the patience of the Western countries towards this rogue state growing astonishingly.
