Houthis Militia Conduct Gross Violates against PGC’s Leaders and members

According to reports that SAM received, many military and civil leaders, and Saleh relatives are facing unknown fate, and their relatives are highly concerned that they are killed, as they could not reach them.

Houthis conducted wide abduction campaign against PGC members, while blocking internet and telecommunication in the targeted areas, and violently disbursed women’s protest that demanded release of Saleh’s body.

Tawfiq Al-Humeidi, monitoring officer at SAM said in statement that PGC members in Sana’a are exposed to crimes mount to crimes against humanity, including summary execution, abduction and disappearing of injured, and holding of deceased bodies, of civilians including journalists.

The Houthis imposed a state of terror and fear in all areas of their control, where SAM has documented several instances of break-ins at PGC houses in Sana’a, Al-Mahwet, Amran Hajjah, and Sanhan, as well at neighbouring houses to Saleh’s, where unarmed civilians were killed. Many of PGC leaders’ fate is unknown by the time of this statement.

Also reports indicated that trucks loaded of civilians were seen entering the central prison in Sana’a and other prisons outside the city. Also, witnesses reported to SAM that Houthis has abducted many women and led them to unknown place.

Sputnik Correspondent in Yemen Missing For Nearly a Week – Spouse

Earlier this month, the Houthi rebels seized a TV station in Sanaa, holding 41 journalists hostage, including a Sputnik correspondent.

A Sputnik freelance correspondent in Yemen, who had been captured by Houthi rebels, has not been heard from since Tuesday, his wife told Sputnik Monday.

The correspondent, who has been working for Sputnik in Yemen, went missing on December 3 after the Houthis had established control over Yemen Today's broadcasting station in Sanaa that belonged to former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Houthis break into Saleh's sister in law house, kidnap her son in Sana'a

The Houthis gunmen stormed the director of Dar al-Rahma center for Orphans in the capital Sana'a Ruqaih al-Hajri, the former President Ali Abdullah Saleh's sister in law, a source said on Saturday.

The source told AlMasdaronline that about 10 military vehicles carrying Houthi gunmen stormed the house by force and kidnapped two sons, but released one later, and still keeping the other.

The reason for that was because of Ruqia al-Hajri relationship with the former president, the source said, "They were justified by the Afash family."

"They did not knock on the doors; they just broke into with their vehicles and searched in the whole house, then took the two young boys as one was released but the other still, also they looted everything they found precious, money, gold, watches, antiques and telephones." the source added.

Ruqaih al Hajri is an activist in the social field and known as the Mother of Orphans, as she runs Dar al-Rahma center for orphans and has the largest nursing home in Sana'a, according to the source.

Here’s how you can send help to people in Yemen trapped in the world’s worst humanitarian crisis

But how do we help them?

The World surveyed journalists, humanitarians and Yemeni citizens to come up with this short list of aid groups — some small and local, others huge and global — with proven track records of helping families in Yemen. Each in its own way is helping Yemenis survive what the United Nations calls the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.

Organizations whose mission is to help Yemenis

Global NGOs that include service in Yemen

Advocacy groups that work to end the war in Yemen

How the Saudis Escalated Yemen Struggle Beyond All Control

The Yemen Civil War could have been a local power struggle, if not for the Saudis' heavy hand.

Hadi presided over a constitution-drafting exercise. One feature enraged the Houthis: a plan to redraw the regions of Yemen, making Sana'a and Aden self-governing and merging Sada'a into a new highland governorate, “a formation that would deny the Houthis control over the Red Sea coast to west, cut them off from natural resources to the east, and fence them up against the Saudi border to the north,” as Ginny Hill wrote.

The Saudi blockade and bombing have scaled up a local power struggle to genocidal proportions. They believe Yemen is their backyard and that it is their right to impose a solution. Military victory has proven elusive for them, but their unlimited resources and the wide license given them by the Western media to freely commit crimes has allowed them to keep raising the stakes and nudging Yemen towards catastrophe.

The Houthis have held on, however, withstanding the bombardment and siege, even as the humanitarian catastrophe continues to expand.

Saleh, a wily operator who had survived in power since 1978, could not survive this last alliance with the Saudis: he was killed within 24 hours of making it.

The UN, Oman, Iran, and others have put forward peace plans to end the Yemeni civil war. Most feature a national unity government that includes the Houthis, who will convert their movement into a political party, with elections to follow. Saleh switching sides and the Houthi killing him makes a peace deal much less likely in the short term. But the biggest obstacle to peace remains Saudi Arabia, which has also been the biggest escalating force of the war – by Justin Podur

Privatisation by war: Poor pay more for Yemen's cash-starved services

Hospitals, utilities, schools and other public sector operations can no longer afford to provide Yemenis with free or cheap services

After more than two years of war, Yemen's public sector is buckling.

With budgets halted and employee salaries paid irregularly, hospitals, water and electricity providers, schools and other public-sector operations can no longer afford to provide Yemenis with free or cheap services as they did in the past.

So they are imposing fees to provide even the most basic services, forcing many Yemenis such as Zazaie, more than 70 percent of whom are already receiving humanitarian support, to spend more money on basic services - or pick and choose the bare essentials.

Government officials and public sector managers acknowledge the gravity of the situation, but find themselves stuck in an impossible situation, further aggravated by a Saudi-led blockade – by Nasser al-Sakkaf

Film: Covering Yemen: Saleh, Saudi and the media - The Listening Post (Lead)

A look at the complex layers in reporting on the Yemen conflict from a regional and international perspective.

Last week, Yemen's former President Ali Abdullah Saleh was killed, but media coverage has not been straightforward.

Foreign audiences may be forgiven their confusion of the causes of this conflict, given that much of the coverage of the war's main architect, Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, has been enthusiastic, even effusive.

There's little reporting of the behind-the-scenes roles Britain and the United States are playing in this conflict - underwriting the Saudis with arms, expertise and diplomatic cover.

There are a lot of angles to this story - including the alleged role Iran is playing in Yemen, an angle long on allegations and short on proof.

"The problem with the press, the Saudi-backed press or Saudi-funded press, like all Arab-funded press establishments, is that it is simply a propaganda tool and therefore we shouldn't take it as a reflection of any independent thinking, but as a reflection of the political views of the power elite at that moment, because that view can change the next day, just as Ali Abdullah's position changed overnight," says journalism professor Rami Khouri at the American University of Beirut.

The Saudis have also pushed their case in the international news media - through a public relations offensive aimed at diplomats and news organisations.

"The Anglo-American media has been criminally complicit in not reporting accurately about what actually is going on in Yemen in terms of the deeper context of who is responsible or who is engaged in the war in Yemen. It's presented as a great tragedy," says Khouri.

Britain’s involvement in Yemen is making the situation worse

It's the world's worst humanitarian disaster—and the involvement of a dozen other nations is not helpful

This is a war of unstable alliances on the ground, and also one that involves an extraordinary range of nations and nationalities.

Then there is Britain. Along with the United States, we are tacitly giving backing to the campaign, including logistical support in Saudi’s command and control centre, albeit separated by a glass wall to provide deniability that we are “in the room.”

Britain can whimper about the consequences of this bloody dispute, but it cannot credibly dispute it has thrown its lot in with the Saudi side.

The rest of the world tries to make sense of Yemen as a crucible for far wider religious tensions and regional rivalries.

But this civil war is, at its heart, a home-grown struggle between two rival Yemeni elites, tussling over money, resources and control of a fracturing state. Many of the roots of this nation’s agonies lie in its own distinctive soil.

Yemen’s current war may have only begun in 2014, but its origins go much further back. As so often in the Middle East, Empire cast a long shadow.

Yemen’s war has shattered the social fabric of its 27m-strong population and devastated its infrastructure. It is a land seared by division.

Different parts of the elite who established themselves under more than three decades of Saleh’s rule are today placed by the conflict, in theory at least, on opposing sides. Yet the economics of the war unites their interests—the well-connected on both sides are financial beneficiaries of the protraction of conflict, and the wages of corruption that come with it.

But the conflict has been economically ruinous for ordinary Yemenis.

Saudi Arabia is pouring funds into this war because of its strategic interests. First, there is the obsession with Iran—Riyadh simply cannot countenance that country getting a foothold on the Arabian Peninsula. Then there is also the issue of saving face. This conflict is now inextricably linked with the ascendant Crown Prince.

The gulf between Yemen’s people and its politicians, the haves and the have nots, has never been wider.

The parties to the conflict are myriad, but all are united by a lack of concern for civilian life.

But how to draw a line? Focusing on regional political dynamics, or even the Yemeni elite, will not on its own achieve a durable end to the conflict. The disparate grievances of all the factions and tribes involved must be attended to—grievances that have built up over decades of corruption, oppression and marginalisation.

To achieve a comprehensive end to the war, the UN-led efforts need to be broadened to include all the issues that lead to conflict.

The legacy of the fighting will be felt for generations to come – by Iona Craig

Listen to this harrowing account of Yemen’s post-assassination lockdown

You must listen to this: A first-person account by a young woman living under lockdown conditions in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen.

Yemenis were in shock on Monday, Dec. 4, when they learned that their longtime leader, Ali Abdullah Saleh, had been assassinated. Saleh had been a moderating influence on the Houthi rebels who control Sanaa. Now that Saleh's gone, Yemenis fear for their personal safety, their liberty and their country's future.

This woman — we don't use her name here — tells what it's like to live under lockdown conditions with little certainty about what's to come next.

"I had issues with the old regime ... but when Ali Abdullah Saleh died, I cried. He was President when I was born, when I was a student. We all looked up to him, he was a father to our generation. His death has broken everyone. There is no more protection"

Who Killed Yemen's Former President Ali Abdullah Saleh?

Well as reported yesterday by Iranian researcher Dr. Mohamed Sadiq al-Husseini, Saleh was being prepared to lead a coup against the supporters of Ansarullah for his return to the Yemeni scene and eventually install his son Ahmed, who is based in the UAE, as Yemen’s president under the patronage of the UAE.

In the details of this coup, Hussieni reported that the coup against Ansarullah began about eight months ago. Mohammed Ben Zayed, General Shaul Mofaz, former Israeli War Minister, Mohammed Dahlan, former Fatah Central Committee member, and Ahmad Ali Abdullah Saleh, the son of the slain Yemeni president, were all involved in the planning. The planning of the operation was initiated in Abu Dhabi, where the coup plan was penned by Mohammed bin Zayed. After that, the headquarters of the meetings was transferred to the island of Socotra, which was sold by the ousted Abed Rabbu Mansour Hadi to the Emiratis. A total of nine meetings were held on the island, involving UAE officers deployed in southern Yemen and Israeli officers recommended by Shaul Mofaz.

Husseini continued, that as part of the plan, it was decided to train 1,200 close associates of Ali Abdullah Saleh in the camps of the UAE forces in the city of Aden to be the leading forces for those to be later recruited and trained in Sanaa and its environs, which will then be responsible for carrying out the coup d'état.

And then it began, funds were allocated to cover the training costs of a total of 6,000 of Saleh’s men in Sanaa and its environs under the umbrella of training for the reinforcement of fronts. Mohammed bin Zayed's operations room transferred a total of 289 million USD from Aden to Sanaa through intermediaries of Ali Abdullah Saleh's relatives between February and June 2017. In addition, 100 million USD were transferred to Saleh between August 2017 and the end of October 2017.

The coup was supposed to be carried out on the 24th of August, but the UAE and Israeli officers postponed the operation to a later date for two reasons: first, the lack of readiness of Saleh's forces, and second was Ansarullah supporters discovering the coup plan and controlling all entrances to the capital and its perimeter tightly.

A new decision was taken by the coup planners to arm and train the total of 8,000 fighters in Sanaa and its surroundings. The mission was entrusted to local smugglers, along with 16 supply experts from ISIS who had been transferred from Iraq to the Sheikh Osman area of Aden earlier this year as well as four former Israeli officers who had entered the Aden area with the help of the Emiratis.

According to Ansarullah supporters, weapons were covertly stored in 49 different secret points in Sanaa, as per a specific mobilization plan that depends on the distribution of weapons to individuals to be deployed in the city at zero hour determined by the military operations room to certify the element of surprise and to secure speed of decisiveness when starting to move against the supporters of Ansarullah in the capital Sanaa. This plan did eventually work from a military technical point of view late last week, which made Ali Abdullah Saleh refuse to make any concessions to Ansarullah until the night of December 3rd, as he believed he had enough weapons and gunmen to control Sanaa within a maximum of six hours but eventually failed.

When the leadership of the Ansarullah movement realized that the negotiations with Saleh will not work, they informed the mediators that they can guarantee a safe exit for Ali Abdullah Saleh in exchange for ending the coup, warning that if he did not agree, they would resolve the situation militarily and control Sanaa and its surroundings within three hours, which is what happened between the 2nd and 3rd of December 2017.

After the situation was completely resolved in Sanaa by Ansarullah, Ali Abdullah Saleh was forced to flee outside the capital. This was done in coordination with the UAE through his son, where the coalition warplanes escorted his motorcade, consisting of three armored vehicles. The convoy also included six four-wheel-drive vehicles equipped with 23 mm machine guns and two Toyota Pickups with 37 mm machine guns.

Lebanese based Al Mayadeen TV channel reported that 11 checkpoints were bombed by the coalition warplanes to secure a passage way for Saleh to flee from Sanaa.

This led to an exchange of fire at one of the checkpoints in Sayyan south of Yemen with Ansarullah supporters. The coalition aircraft bombed the site of the clash to prevent Ansarullah fighters from arresting Ali Abdullah Saleh alive so as not to reveal the details of the plot carried out in coordination with the UAE, the Saudis and the Israelis.

Hence, the decision to terminate Ali Abdullah Saleh was taken by the leadership of the coalition to cover up direct military and security cooperation with Israel in order to take control over the capital Sanaa – by Marwa Osman

In shadow of war, a silent killer is claiming Yemen’s children

Aid organisations fear cholera will affect a million people by the year-end, most of them children

The epidemic is the worst in recent history with a million cases feared by the year end. Most of them — 6,00,000 — are likely to be children.

International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) vice-president Christine Beerli said the epidemic has highlighted what “a horrible catastrophic situation” the conflict has turned out to be. Beerli, whose organisation is among a handful working across Yemen, said their work in the country has been tougher in part because “almost nobody is speaking of the conflict’’, even in the western media.

The epidemic, Beerli underlined, is not unrelated to the conflict and the embargo.

The ex-president is dead. Will the son rise over Yemen?

With the ex-president gone, attention has switched to his eldest son. Now aged 45, and rarely photographed without his dictator-style dark glasses, Ahmed Ali has been described as a man with "zero popularity and charisma" who would not be recognised in Yemen's streets unless with his motorcade. Regardless of that, there's talk of him stepping into his father's shoes. He seems to want to, and last week Saudi media quoted him as saying “I will lead the battle until the last Houthi is thrown out of Yemen.”

The Saudis and their main coalition allies, the Emiratis, also appear eager to befriend him now.

This has led to suggestions that he is being drawn into the Saudi-led coalition against the Houthis. Whether that would be a good idea is another matter; anyone thinking of striking a deal with Ahmed Ali would be well advised to look closely at his career to date – by: Brian Whitaker

As the War in Yemen Spins Out of Control, Tehran Finds Itself Deprived of a Say

Now pretty much everyone tries to predict the future of the Yemeni conflict after the murder of Abdullah Saleh. But to make such a prediction one must examine the reasons behind the Yemeni war and establish the degree of interference that states like Saudi Arabia and Iran have shown so far..

The problem of Yemen’s crisis is critical, as there’s a massive gap between the industrial south that serves as home to some 20% of the total population of Yemen and the archaic north. The gap has never been overcome. Moreover, the so-called “Arab Spring” caught the country while it was still in a transitional period triggering a number of serious conflicts within Yemeni society.

Frankly speaking, if Saudi Arabia hadn’t launched its invasion, the longtime strongman would most certainly have achieved power once again, since there has been no other leader in Yemen who could have contested him.

The murder of Saleh is mysterious in every sense. There is no logic behind the alleged narrative, since the Houthis have no chance to survive both politically and physically without Saleh’s support. Unable to survive the political fallout from Saleh’s death, only amid continued conflict can the Houthis hope to survive.

If the Houthis were indeed behind the murder of the former President of Yemen, they have indeed achieved a small tactical victory but at the same time made themselves political outcasts. With Saleh, they had a chance for a political settlement, alone they will likely be crushed regardless of their fierce resistance, as every single other tribe will be forced to fight them.

There’s no scenario under which Tehran could assassinate Saleh, since his death created a long list of challenges that can hardly be seen as beneficial.

Now that all of Yemen’s tribes are going to be forced to unite against the Houthis, Yemen will be closed from Iranian influence, as any ties with Tehran are going to be punished.

There are reports that the son of the former President Ahmed Saleh has already sent a number of the Republican Guard units to the north of the country, who are now approaching Marib.

After the collapse of the coalition between the Houthis and Abdullah Saleh, all the existing maps depicting zones of control over Yemeni territory have shifted – by Alexander Orlov

https://journal-neo.org/2017/12/10/as-the-war-in-yemen-spins-out-of-control-tehran-finds-itself-deprived-of-a-say/

My comment: The Iranians obviously have nothing to do with Saleh’s murder (or killing), nor any other force like Israel or the Saudis would have had the opportunity to do so. It’s obvious that the Houthis did if; if the author thinks that this would have been a suicidal stupidity he certainly is true; but that’s how it is.

Yemen has a new chance to end its brutal civil war

While these observers see Saleh's killing as a step backward, the deaths of important leaders have historically created opportunity for conflict mediation. New leaders often have something to prove; they don't want to begin their careers by continuing a devastating conflict and want to be seen as national heroes.

Needless to say, this is a very optimistic view.

Does Saleh's Death Signal the End of the Yemen War?

Following Saleh's death, the Houthis are likely to suffer a further decline in their popular support, which was already waning as a result of the never-ending conflict.

While the remaining units loyal to Saleh may abandon the Houthis and join forces with the anti-Houthi coalition, it’s not clear that their defection will alter the balance in the year-long military stalemate between the Houthis and the government/Coalition forces.

Similarly, it is too early to judge if or how the end of the Houthi-Saleh coalition will affect prospects for a political resolution of the conflict – by Gerald Feierstein

Saleh’s death caps a 40-year political career that charts Yemen’s tragic modern history.

The latest events mean the war in Yemen is likely to escalate.

A day before they killed Yemen’s former president, gunmen from the Iran-aligned Houthi militia group overran one of Ali Abdullah Saleh’s fortified compounds in Sanaa.

When Houthi militia neared the palace, Saleh’s guards fired. The Houthis, experts in mountain guerrilla warfare, overran the palace with grenades and seized it.

The Houthis wanted Saleh to “hand over his weapons and disarm his fighters,” a senior Saleh party official told Reuters. “He refused.”

Another party official said that, contrary to reports that Saleh was in his car trying to flee when he was killed on Dec. 4, the former president had been executed with a gunshot to the head after making a last stand at his house.

Now, the Saleh associate says he and his colleagues are afraid the Houthis will turn against all of them.

“The Houthis want to kill us all.”

Yemen: Why death of ex-dictator makes ending war harder, and more urgent

With the killing of deposed dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh, the warring sides in Yemen have lost their main exit strategy and interlocuter, with experts warning that the parties must be brought to the negotiation table before the conflict spirals further out of control.

One tiny country is quietly leading the drive for peace talks in Yemen: Oman.

Yemen heads for more uncertainty after Saleh’s murder

It’s not completely clear who is now going to lead not only the military and security forces loyal to Saleh but also his political block, the General People’s Congress, Juneau said.

However, the biggest question is what happens with the UN-led attempts to find a political solution to the ongoing impasse.

And conditions for a political solution are even less ripe now that Saleh is out of the picture, he said.

Saleh urges Yemenis to fight Houthis in his last handwritten note

These pictures purportedly show the death note of slain Yemeni ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh believed to be handwritten by him a day before he was killed by Houthi militiamen in Sanaa last week.
The death note dates back to Dec. 3, just one day before the former president was killed.
It reads: “If you find this paper, know that our homeland is valuable.
“My wish is for my children and my people to not surrender to these criminal militias (Houthis) and to not handover the Republican of Yemen to them. I wish you become a nightmare that beats their sleep.
“At this moment, I see myself among the many traitors who sold Yemen for a low price. Greetings to you, the great Yemeni people, may we meet in the highest paradise."

Behind Saleh’s bizarre decision to turn against the Houthis

Does all this justify his overwhelming hatred to the extent of handing over Imran and Sanaa and other cities and governorates to the Houthis? The legitimate figures we spoke to after the Arab coalition intervened said the army, whose members are mainly from the North, the Republican Guards and special forces would only obey Saleh especially as all officers (even the Shafa'i ones) were loyal to him and were not used to obeying Abdrabbu Mansour Hadi. If his hatred was less, he could have prevented the Houthi expansion into Imran, Sanaa and other areas.

Major collapse in Houthi militias' defences, says Arab Coalition Forces Commander

Brigadier-General Abdul Salam Al-Shehhi, Commander of the Arab Coalition Forces on the west coast of Yemen, has stated that the UAE, Sudanese and Yemeni armed forces are conducting, with courage and determination, an epic battle to liberate Yemen from the control of the Iran-backed Houthi militias.

Al-Shehhi said in a statement to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, that the Houthi militias have suffered a 'major collapse' in their defences, adding that hundreds of their dead, injured, and captured members have been treated according to International Laws.

He went on to say that the battle currently being conducted in Yemen's west coast has dealt with Houthi militias only, adding that Yemen's National Resistance Forces have assisted the Coalition's task to eliminate the Houthi threat.

Yemen government makes fresh gains in Hodeida

Yemen’s government forces have continued to advance on the country’s western coast after pushing Al Houthis from a few small villages in Khokha district in Hodeida province.

Army commanders said on Saturday that government forces took control of villages close to Abu Musa Al Ash’ari army camp as military explosives experts defused a large number of landmines planted by Al Houthis, who took shelter in the mountains and in other territories in the province.

Government forces on Tuesday broke a months-long military stalemate on the Red Sea coast by booting out Al Houthi militants from a strategic mountain, and a road that links Hodeida city to the southern city of Aden.

Yemen: ICRC urges warring sides on Red Sea coast to protect civilian life

As reports of intense fighting along Yemen's Red Sea Coast continue to emerge, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) urges all parties to the conflict in Yemen to respect the lives of civilians.

"Fighting along the Red Sea Coast is reported to be approaching densely inhabited urban areas. This is happening against the backdrop of a catastrophic humanitarian situation and a Yemeni population brought to its knees after almost three years of conflict," said Robert Mardini, who directs the ICRC's operations in the Near and Middle East.

WHY WE OPPOSE THE COALITION'S HUDAYDAH OFFENSIVE

There is consensus among the agencies and organizations responsible for providing humanitarian assistance to Yemen that this offensive will dangerously disrupt humanitarian and commercial deliveries, which are absolutely vital for the survival of millions of people.

The coalition and the Yemeni government argue that the liberation of Hudaydah would cut off a key Houthi supply line and allow the free flow of aid and goods into Yemen. We believe that this is simply not the case, for two specific and interconnected reasons:

  1. We do not believe that a swift, decisive military victory in Hudaydah is possible
  2. Even the successful liberation of Hudaydah would not result in an increased flow of aid and goods to those in need. It is very likely that a successful offensive would leave the city and its port in ruins. The reconstruction of the port and its supporting infrastructure would take a long time, and many thousands of people would starve to death in the interim. Even the very best-case scenario--a speedy liberation of the city, with the port remaining intact--would not result in an increased flow of goods. Saudi Arabia has maintained a partial blockade on the port for two and a half years.

I understand those who insist that the Houthis must be destroyed before any other considerations are dealt with. This war never should have happened, those who started it are criminals, but it is happening, and millions of people are starving.

For the past three years the Houthis have failed to establish any alliance with any of the Yemeni factions. In 2014 they scared off all political parties. During the war their only ally was Saleh, and well...you know how that alliance ended!

https://twitter.com/ammar82/status/939978591441489925

don’t you think that the devastating Saudi-led air campaign has greatly reduced, if not eliminated, the opportunities for political alliances with other factions? Not to whitewash the Houthis’ actions, but hasn’t the war played into their hands in ways more than one?

https://twitter.com/adamzi88/status/940082070180610049

No the war should have helped Houthi gather Yemenis around him to defeat any foreign intrusion. But the opposite happened. Every single faction out of the 17 different parties are now standing against Houthis... The latest one was the GPC

https://twitter.com/ammar82/status/940083052197199872

well if that’s the case then the Houthis don’t seem to be politically smart. But the Saudi-led war has given the Houthis the easy excuse of accusing their rivals of treason for supposedly siding with the invaders and subsequent elimination, the latest being Saleh.

Destroying Yemen

What Chaos in Arabia Tells Us about the World

Isa Blumi (Author)

Paperback, 312 pages. ISBN: 9780520296145. January 2018. $29.95, £24.95

Since March 2015, a Saudi-led international coalition of forces—supported by Britain and the United States—has waged devastating war in Yemen. Largely ignored by the world’s media, the resulting humanitarian disaster and full-scale famine threatens millions. Destroying Yemen offers the first in-depth historical account of the transnational origins of this war, placing it in the illuminating context of Yemen’s relationship with major powers since the Cold War. Bringing new sources and a deep understanding to bear on Yemen’s profound, unwitting implication in international affairs, this explosive book ultimately tells an even larger story of today’s political economy of global capitalism, development, and the war on terror as disparate actors intersect in Arabia.

Book Review – Helen Lackner’s ‘Yemen in Crisis: Autocracy, Neo-Liberalism and the Disintegration of a State’

T he need for information on the country is in sore demand, and the lack of neutral, reliable information is painfully felt. With Yemen in Crisis: Autocracy, Neo-Liberalism and the Disintegration of a State (Saqi 2017), Helen Lackner has produced a book that fills this gap, addressing both fellow scholars and interested observers.

The array of topics of this book is correspondingly broad.

The strength of this book lies in the breadth of its topics and in their balanced presentation. Lackner’s caution in properly weighting the details of a very complicated set of developments can be attributed to her long-standing research expertise and first-hand experience in Yemen.

This is why Yemen is a constant war zone

Yemen’s complex history is one of conflict and political rivalry that has continued for nearly a century.

The Houthi movement, officially known as Ansar Allah (translation: supporters of God), began in the 1990s as a theological movement that preached peace and tolerance in Yemen.

But in 2004, the group picked up arms and declared war on the government. An uprising occurred and government forces killed the Houthi’s leader.

With Saleh dead and his allied forces facing an intensified battle with Houthi fighters, the future of war-torn Yemen is uncertain, and hopes of putting an end to the bloody civil war look bleak.

Yemen rebels 'disrupt internet nationwide'

Yemen's Houthi rebels have been disrupting internet access nationwide as they consolidate their grip of the capital, residents and an Arab digital rights organisation told AFP on Saturday. "Yemen has only one internet service provider, YemenNet, and any group or entity that controls it or has influence over it has the ability to disrupt access to the internet, so the disruptions are nationwide and not limited to areas under the control of the Houthis," said Lara Bitar, the lead researcher at SMEX.

On Thursday night, the Houthis, the northern Yemen-based insurgent group in control of most of Sana’a since 2015, completely shut down the internet for close to 30 minutes. Earlier in the day, the group took measures to disrupt and limit access to the internet for the second time in one week

U.N. Panel Finds Evidence of Iranian Hardware in Yemeni Rebels’ Missile. And American.

Investigation into weapon’s origins yields clues, but no smoking gun.

While the new evidence has strengthened the case against Iran, it has not been sufficient to convince the U.N. to explicitly accuse Tehran of supplying the Houthis with banned missile technology. A U.N. panel of experts charged with monitoring violations of Yemen’s 2015 arms embargo concluded last month that for the time being it “has no evidence as to the identity of the broker or supplier.” U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, meanwhile, stopped short of charging Iran with upgrading the Houthis’ missile program.

Growing risks to marine and aviation assets in Houthi-controlled territory as coalition-backed forces mobilise in central Yemen

The offensive along the Red Sea coastline, coupled with the arrival of Saudi-led coalition military vehicles and supplies from al-Ghayda, Mahra province, indicates that the coalition’s priority is to stop weapons smuggling to Houthi insurgents through the Red Sea and Mahra province coastal regions.

Coalition backed military operations near Sanaa airport and Hodeidah port are likely in the coming weeks, with a high risk of collateral damage to those assets.

Saudi war hampering ICRC aid delivery in Yemen: Spokesman

The Saudi military aggression and blockade of Yemen is “hampering” the ability of humanitarian organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to deliver aid to the impoverished Arab nation.

With the blockade that came, it really intensified the situation in a negative way,” Ralph Elhaje, an ICRC spokesman, told Press TV in an interview on Sunday.

He also said the outbreak of cholera in Yemen is due to the Saudi blockade, which is preventing proper supplies to be brought in to contain this "easily treatable disease."

Yemen aid lost to corruption as US steps up humanitarian pressure

UN aid arriving at rebel-controlled ports in Yemen, including medicine and food, is being sold on the black market or provided to militia on the battle field rather than given to those who need it most, The National has learned.

The rebels also take advantage of corruption among the UN’s local partners. A human rights lawyer working in Sanaa, who asked only to be identified as Laila, said aid is also diverted when it is handed over to local organisations for distribution.

But a spokeswoman for the UN's agency that delivers food supplies to the country said they were confident the aid was going to the needy, dismissing concerns about distribution.

Ms Etefa said the complaints about lack of access were out of date and that a total of three ships had moved to dock.

“We understand also that there are commercial ships that are getting to the ports.

My comments: The claims in parts contradict themselves. Corruption and looting related to humanitarian aid is nothing new, unfortunately. Of course Emirati propaganda exclusively blames the Houthis for that. Such a propaganda might be a preparatory support of the anti-Houthi assault against Hodeida (cp 1, 17), which actually will cut off Northern Yemen from all imports.

JEMEN: VOM UNERWARTETEN INS UNBEKANNTE

WHO ramps up efforts to fight severe acute malnutrition cases in Yemen

A young mother sits in the waiting room of the Al-Sabeen Hospital in Sana’a, desperately holding onto her 10-month old baby girl, Menamah. The journey from their home in Al-Jawf governorate to the hospital has taken a physical toll on both mother and child. Menamah is suffering from severe acute malnutrition, and her frail, little body is further weakened by complications from pneumonia, gastroenteritis and a skin infection.

WHO is actively involved in rebuilding existing TFCs and, in addition, has distributed 120 nutritional kits to all TFCs in Yemen. These life-saving kits can treat up to 6000 cases of severe acute malnutrition.

Yemen's Saleh buried in Sanaa with handful of relatives present: sources

Yemen’s Houthi group has buried the body of former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh in Sanaa, allowing only a handful of relatives to attend, sources from his General People’s Congress (GPC) party said on Sunday.

A GPC source, who has asked not to be identified, said the Houthis allowed less than 10 people from Saleh’s relatives to attend the night-time burial in the capital Sanaa, but gave no details on the exact location.

GPC Secretary-General Aref al-Zouka, who was killed with Saleh, was buried on Saturday in his native al-Saeed district of Shabwa province in southern Yemen after the Houthis handed over his body to tribal leaders, media and GPC officials said.

Relatives said on Thursday that Saleh’s family had refused conditions demanded by the Houthis for handing over the body. Some said they wanted to bury the body in the courtyard of a mosque he had built near the presidential compound in southern Sanaa.

UAE-backed south Yemen forces ally with President Hadi

The Vice President of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) has expressed support for President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi in a social media post yesterday.

Hani Bin Brek wrote on Twitter that the STC is keen on supporting Hadi, but there has been no clear confirmation by the organisation’s President, General Aidarous Al-Zubaidi.

Tribes surrounding Sana’a, including the STC, remained silent following the death of Saleh. Reports today have emerged that the STC forces are assisting Saleh’s army alongside President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi’s national army to recapture the ports of Hudaydah from the Houthis.

The leader of the resistance force Tihama, located on the western coast of Yemen told Hadi that he is ready to form an alliance with the national army. One week on from the killing of Saleh, alliances have now shifted against the Houthi group.

South Yemen Will Regain Independence If It Follows These Six Steps

Independence is once again attainable for South Yemen so long as prospective peace talks result in a coalition-enforced “buffer zone” with North Yemen and a “federal” transitional period that precedes an internationally recognized (re-)independence vote, and the restored country could avoid becoming a UAE satellite if it grants a third-party such as Pakistan a naval base in Aden as a friendly means of “balancing” out its patron’s potentially overbearing influence, which in this case could also serve the dual purpose of facilitating the south Arabian state’s integration into the New Silk Road – by Andrew KORYBKO

“The Houthi militia has embarked on brutal atrocities against many senior figures and members of the General People’s Congress. As a result many of them have to flee their own areas in the provinces under the militia’s control,” Ahmed Obeid Bin Dagher, prime minister said.

Statement by the Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, Jamie McGoldrick, Calling on Parties to Facilitate Unimpeded Aid Delivery

The violence that engulfed Sana’a city over the last weeks has subsided, but the suffering continues. Famine still threatens millions; preventable diseases continually strike a weakened population in all parts of Yemen. The continuing blockade of ports, is limiting supplies of fuel, food and medicines; dramatically increasing the number of vulnerable people who need help.

The priority for humanitarian organisations is to resume life-saving operations that were scaled back because of insecurity.

The parties to the conflict have an obligation to fully facilitate sustained and unimpeded humanitarian access.

As fighting intensifies along the western coast and other parts of Yemen, I am greatly alarmed at reports of hospitals being damaged, populations being impeded from fleeing to safe areas and killings and arbitrary detentions reportedly being carried out in Sana’a. Renewed violence will only lead to further devastation.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called Sunday for a renewed push to end the "stupid war" in Yemen, saying he hoped the Trump administration could pressure Saudi Arabia to ease the humanitarian crisis there.

Here's How Both Barack Obama And Donald Trump Stoked The Saudi-Iranian Rivalry

This conflict has been escalating since the start of the Arab uprisings in 2011 and is driven by a combustible blend of geopolitical competition, religious sectarianism, and nationalism.

In most of these instances Iran-Saudi competition was not the initial spark that lit the fire. But by again and again choosing sides, taking a hard line, and providing money, weapons, political support, and sometimes intervening directly with their militaries, Saudi-Iranian competition has acted as the gasoline causing these conflicts to explode.

Trump's approach, like Obama's, is causing both sides to get more aggressive. The Saudis are now overconfident instead of insecure. The Iranians see Trump as impossible to deal with and confrontation with the United States and Saudi Arabia as the only option.

The end result has been that in the past seven years nearly every major conflict in the Middle East has had some flavor of Iranian-Saudi competition.

Mohammad Bin Salman’s Ambitious Moves: Order or Disorder in Saudi Arabia?

As his sudden rise in the line of the throne, MBS is ambitiously moving, at times without taking into account the risk calculus, to make the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia a regional power player in the Arab World, reducing the regional influence of Iran and grabbing a major chunk of power in the kingdom. YEMEN: Will Saleh’s Death Precipitate US Direct Military Action in a War They Orchestrated?

Don’t be fooled by Trump’s recent posturing demanding the Saudi blockade of Yemen be lifted. The death of Ali Abdullah Saleh has neocons eyeing direct US intervention in war-torn Yemen.

For months, the US plan in Yemen has been to split the late Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh from the al Houthi movement. From there, the US and their Gulf allies could re-engage Saleh’s party, the General Peoples Congress (GPC), with political negotiations and an upper hand.

Obviously, things didn’t quite work out as planned.

The neoconservative thinktank, American Enterprise Institute (which was very influential during the Bush era) believes the US needs to take a direct role in Yemen now that Saleh is out of the picture.

Although the article goes on to state that a political solution must be reached, I think everyone knows what AEI means by a direct US role in Yemen. As always, that implies military force and occupation.

But with Saleh gone, will the US enter Yemen with full force? Or simply keep supporting UAE troops and mercenaries? Probably the latter. Because sending US troops to fight Ansarullah would be a foolish, foolish mistake – by Randi Nord

The United States has warned Saudi Arabia that concern in Congress over the humanitarian situation in Yemen could constrain U.S. assistance, as it pushed Riyadh to allow greater access for humanitarian aid, a U.S. official said on Friday.

Jeremy Corbyn speech at the United Nations’ Geneva headquarters

Too many have turned a wilfully blind eye to the flagrant and large-scale human rights abuses now taking place in Yemen, fuelled by arms sales to Saudi Arabia worth billions of pounds.

The see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil approach undermines our credibility and ability to act over other human rights abuses.

Total British government aid to Yemen last year was under £150 million - less than the profits made by British arms companies selling weapons to Saudi Arabia. What does that say about our country’s priorities, or our government’s role in the humanitarian disaster now gripping Yemen?

The volatile history of oil, gas and water production in Yemen continues

The poor and unstable state is not reaping enough economic benefits from its dwindling resources

Yemen’s oil experience was not the same as its neighbours’. With very different geology, and much smaller fields even than Oman’s, it found oil later.

Oil production continues at reduced levels in relatively peaceful Marib, and may even have recovered a bit this year to around 40,000 barrels per day. After repairs to its pipeline, there are sporadic rumours of restarting the LNG plant.

But the industry is still a shadow of its past self. The Houthis may have eliminated Saleh, but the areas they control lack both the oil and water which have been critical to the country's economy.

Houthis do not believe in compromise or peace

The killing of former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh at the hands of the Houthis last week should serve as a reminder of two incontrovertible truths. The first is that, at its core, the conflict in Yemen is a civil war.

The second is that, contrary to romanticized depictions that portray the Houthis as a beleaguered group of rebels seeking redress of long-standing grievances, they are in fact a brutal group of millenarian zealots who have shown complete disregard for the security and stability of Yemen and the well-being of its people.

Fortunately, their brutality has further diminished the meager support they had in Yemen to begin with. The recent successful advances by government forces supported by the Saudi-led Arab coalition against Houthi strongholds suggests that the brave people of Yemen will not allow the Houthis to turn Yemen into a vassal of Iran and Hezbollah.

Saudi Arabia bombards Yemeni TV station, kills 4

The Saudi-led coalition waging war on Yemen has attacked the headquarters of the Yemen al-Youm TV [Yemen Today] channel in the capital, Sana’a, killing four people and injuring five others.

Yemen’s al-Masirah television network reported that in addition to the casualties, the Friday Saudi air raids caused serious damage to the building of the TV station and its equipment.

Houthi fighters took over the TV station following clashes with the supporters of Sale

Saudi-led strike on Yemen TV station kills four: rebels

"Air bombardment by the Saudi-American enemy targeted the building of the Yemen TV satellite channel, killing four citizens," the rebel Al-Masirah news outlet said, taking a jab at US support for the Saudi-led coalition.

The head guard -- himself wounded in the attack -- told reporters at the scene the strike had hit his staff's sleeping quarters, killing four of his colleagues.

"This is not a military post and there are no weapons here. This is just the house where we security guards live," he said outside the heavily damaged Yemen TV building.

Yemen condemns Saudi aggression air strike on its state TV, journalists killed

Yemen's Information Ministry on Saturday strongly condemned an overnight Saudi aggression air strike on the country's state satellite television station that killed a number of journalists and bodyguards, in a statement obtained by Saba.
The ministry said the aggression airstrike came amid attempts to silence the Yemeni media from air broadcasting the Saudi war crimes against the Yemeni civilians since March 2015

They Lied Again: American Missile Defense Failed to Stop Yemeni Scud Headed for Riyadh

The Soviet-made rocket simply missed, but not before beating all five US-supplied Patriot missiles the Saudis fired against it

However, at least two aspects of the story were dead wrong. (Three if you count the nonsense of how the missile was supplied by Iran.) For one the missile wasn’t fired by the Houthis as the former rebels have no such heavy weapons. It was actually fired by Saleh loyalists, which is to say the part of the army which had remained loyal to Saleh and was part of Yemen’s anti-Saudi coalition.

Moreover the US Patriot missiles empathically did not shoot down the Scud. Five missiles were fired against it but they all missed. The Scud went on to fly right over the Saudi anti-missile battery and slammed into the ground behind it, missing the runway by just 300 meters

Prayer, Forgiveness Will Bring Peace, Not War And Guns: Father Tom Uzhunnalil

The prayers and forgiveness will lead people to peace and not war, guns and bullets, says Father Tom Uzhunnalil, the Catholic priest who was freed after being kept in captivity suspectedly by the ISIS for 18 months in strife-torn Yemen.
Father Uzhunnalil said terrorists are created by community and if the communities can be forgiving, there will be peace.
He said freedom is not just doing whatever one wants to do. "It is doing the right thing at the right time and the right place."

A Yemeni rebel claim highlights the risk of nuclear power in the Middle East

Given this history, and the potentially catastrophic consequences of a successful attack on a nuclear facility, the UAE and other Middle Eastern countries should seriously consider the risks when deciding whether to pursue their own forays into nuclear power.

As a Western Woman Traveling in Yemen, I Learned a Lot When I Tried Wearing a Burqa
